00:11hunting for ptarmigan
00:12e minha família vai estar me juntando em laterão
00:42Alright guys, welcome to Gnome Alaska
00:48Got one room, two rooms
00:57Gnome's got a population of about three and a half thousand people
00:59and it's about a one and a half hour jet flight from Anchorage
01:02It's an old historic mining town here in Alaska
01:05Oh, look at that beautiful sunrise
01:09It's been a crazy winter here in Alaska
01:12Gnome only got snow a few weeks ago
01:14Usually this time of year the ocean's frozen solid
01:17we can go out and fish on it
01:19I have real concerns about that
01:23My friend John lives down here
01:25First thing I'm going to do is swing by his house
01:29Hey, John
01:30Hey, Luke
01:31Welcome back
01:32It's good to see you, thank you for having me
01:34So, how about this weather man?
01:35I know
01:35It's been a weird winter, huh?
01:37Three different people have already told me about how weird the ice is
01:40Oh, yeah
01:40I already have two pots out there
01:43Two of them are set and two of them are on the ice
01:45so we can set them
01:49I brought two shrimp pots
01:50We're going to try for some shrimp too
02:05So we're going to be taking this gear out onto the frozen Bering Sea
02:08to go look for some king crab and shrimp
02:10And right now we're on frozen salt water
02:13This is the Gnome Harbor right here
02:15We'll see how the ice is doing
02:17Because apparently a large chunk of it broke off and drifted away
02:21So, uh, we, uh, we don't want to be on one of those when that happens
02:32There's some gold miners diving for gold under the ice over there
02:36We go check it out
02:42This is someone's gold claim
02:44Doesn't look like they're here though
02:45They'll use the auger to cut a big hole in the ice
02:48And then they'll send a diver down to the bottom
02:50with a big vacuum dredge
02:52And he'll suck up the sand and gold off the bottom
02:54and send it through this slush box right here
02:57The divers will have to have a boiler that pumps hot water into their wetsuit
03:02in order to be able to stay down and work in the cold temperatures
03:04It's pretty hardcore stuff
03:14Is that a fox?
03:16There's a fox on the ice pack over there
03:22I was wondering what that fox was doing on the ice pack
03:26Looks like he was hunting ducks
03:29Look at all the organs and meat are just picked clean
03:32It's been such a warm year that there's still ducks out
03:35That's unbelievable
03:36There's almost never ducks this time of year
03:43Nice flat area
03:53Mronella
04:04Some giant Generallying
04:09less Bruno It's
04:10take other people to dig I don't
04:11like it I don't
04:13even know I can't
04:13even predict anyone How about that
04:14Não é tão ruim.
04:24Um exercício.
04:26Todos os homens aqui estão tentando fazer isso.
04:38Então esse é um experimento.
04:40Fishing for king crab through the ice é muito popular aqui.
06:04Um pouco.
06:09E um futebol.
06:12There you go.
06:13Oh, look at that.
06:15That's pretty.
06:15Those are nice sized ones.
06:18Look at the size of that.
06:23There we go.
06:24Look at that.
06:26Big old Alaskan Red King Crab.
06:28I think it weighs about 2-3 pounds.
06:31Look at that big old King Crab.
06:36More starfish.
06:41Looks like another male.
06:43Another gorgeous crab.
06:46He's got to tuck his legs to get inside that cooler.
06:49These are big crabs.
06:50Especially that one. That's a chonky crab.
07:00You know.
07:11Grab one of them.
07:14Oh, that's a jumbo starfish though.
07:20The starfish was eating this little sculpin.
07:23Well, enjoy your meal.
07:25Bacon grease.
07:27Tom cod salmon.
07:28Alright.
07:50Oh, I switched my...
07:53That thing broke off.
07:55That auger broke.
07:57That's why it went crazy.
08:01We're gonna go head back to town
08:02and see about getting another auger.
08:13In the summertime, the gold miners dredge off of these boats.
08:16There's a whole bunch of them.
08:18All pulled up out of the ice.
08:26So, I wanna go camping on the ice pack tonight.
08:29So, I'm gonna go get my camping gear out of the hotel.
08:32And while I do that, John's gonna go ahead and hunt down an auger.
08:37I got camping gear and now I just need some food and supplies.
08:42Stop in here at the AC store and get some groceries.
08:51Okay.
09:00Alright.
09:07Alright.
09:08We got an auger.
09:09We got our gear.
09:10Let's go.
09:29It should touch good.
09:38Just barely.
09:39Yep.
09:39Probably get a little water off that.
10:00Maybe we didn't let them warm up enough.
10:04Let's see.
10:07I can see a little bit of snow.
10:08Oh, yeah.
10:09There's quite a bit of snow in there.
10:10It's probably melting into the air filter.
10:12Oh, I see.
10:13Oh, look at all that snow.
10:14Yeah.
10:16That'll do it.
10:17This is all wet too.
10:20Yeah, that'll do it.
10:22I'm two for two for breaking John's augers.
10:24But I like to mix it up a little bit.
10:25So, this time I got a whole bunch of snow and water in the air filter.
10:29Which has flooded the engine with water.
10:30Which isn't good.
10:44There we go.
10:48Yeah.
10:50Always wanted an ice chair, huh?
10:54Alright, there we go.
10:56Got a nice little spot out here on the Bering Sea.
10:58Got two holes to fish through.
11:00Now I just need to set up my tent.
11:06Normal tent stakes won't go into ice.
11:09So you have to use screws.
11:22Every single time I set this thing up though, it's bigger than I remember.
11:26Hahaha.
11:40While I was fussing with the tent, John cut another hole for a crab pot.
11:56Perfect.
11:57We'll let that sit and see what's there tomorrow.
11:59But I'm feeling pretty good about this spot for as far as fishing goes, but there's one
12:04downside.
12:05We're really close to the edge of the ice.
12:08From time to time, large chunks of ice break off and drift off towards Russia.
12:21This right here is loose moving ice.
12:24You can see it, it's actually drifting right there.
12:29To give you an idea of how close we are to the edge, that's our crab pot and right back
12:36there is my tent.
12:37Other than the ice breaking underneath me and drifting off to sea, my only other real concern
12:42is polar bears.
12:43Normally the polar bears don't come around Nome until the ice breaks up.
12:47And that usually doesn't happen until April, but you know, the ice is breaking up.
12:52So, you know, I'm sure, I'm sure they won't be any polar bears.
12:56It'll be fine.
12:58It'll be fine.
13:00It'll be fine.
13:05It'll be fine.
13:06Let's see how we're doing in here.
13:11I'm going to borrow some of this foam from John.
13:15Give me something to sit on.
13:23This right here is a titanium wood stove.
13:26It weighs about a pound and a half.
13:28That's it.
13:30That's it.
13:40That's it.
13:43That's it.
13:50Let's sit down.
13:53Let's go.
13:54I'm a pilot.
13:55I'm a pilot.
13:58You've got to leave.
13:58. . .
13:58. . .
14:23All right, there we go.
14:25It's warming up nicely in here.
14:27I've got my gloves hanging up so they can dry.
14:30And I think it's time to start doing some fishing.
14:34So this right here is a crab snare.
14:36You tie it to the end of your line.
14:37You put some bait inside the cage.
14:39And you drop it down at the bottom of the ocean.
14:41And a crab will come along and start eating on it.
14:44And hopefully, one of his legs will get caught in these little snares.
14:48I've got a frozen tomcod here.
14:52Some shrimp pellets.
14:59All right, I've got a little lure.
15:00I'm going to drop down there and see if there's any tomcod or flounder.
15:12All right, we've got two rods set up.
15:14We'll see if anything moves them.
15:16My boots are kind of wet and my feet are very cold.
15:19The thing about hot tents is all the heat rises.
15:22So it's really cold down here on the floor and it's really hot up here.
15:26So if I can get my boots up higher, they're going to dry out.
15:34Hang my socks up.
15:41Put my boots next to the stove and see if they dry off.
15:54Let that warm up.
16:15Ah, it's a classic.
16:16Grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.
16:26Ah, that's good.
16:28I think I'm going to go ahead and top off that grilled cheese sandwich with a nice little dessert.
16:32I worked hard today.
16:33I earned it.
16:37I think it's time to hit the sack.
16:40Now, I want to keep the fire going all night, but I don't want to be waking up and stoking
16:43it all the time.
16:44So I'm going to use one of these Duraflame logs.
16:49There we go.
16:54It's time for half an hour.
17:01I'm going to keep the fire going.
17:06Let's move on.
17:11Hold on.
17:12Hold on.
17:14Hold on.
17:15Hold on.
17:15Hold on.
17:16Hold on.
17:16Hold on.
17:16Hold on.
17:18Hold on.
17:19Hold on.
17:20Hold on.
17:20My sleeping bag is starting to warm up and it feels good.
17:23I'm so tired.
17:24I'm just going to sit here and watch my fishing rods.
17:27But unless I get something on, I'll see you guys in the morning.
17:31Well, good morning.
17:32It's about 8 a.m.
17:33And as far as I know, I haven't drifted off to Russia and I haven't been eaten by a polar
17:37bear.
17:38Very strong start to today.
17:39I haven't seen any action on the rods, but I think they're both frozen in the hole.
17:44So I might have to break that loose and see what's going on.
17:47I'm not 100% sure what the temperature is outside.
17:50But I can tell it's dropped aggressively.
17:52It's cold in here.
17:53It's really cold.
17:54You can kind of use the frost line to gauge how cold it is outside.
17:58The higher up it is, the colder it is.
18:00It feels like it might be close to 0 degrees Fahrenheit outside.
18:03It's pretty cold.
18:05But the sun's going to come up in about a half an hour and I am completely out of firewood.
18:09So if I don't want it to get really cold in here, I better go outside and start cutting some
18:13more wood.
18:16Oh, I am bleeding feathers.
18:22My boots.
18:24The toe box is dry and warm and this part is very cold.
18:29My ankle is icy cold and my toes are so warm.
18:33It feels really weird.
18:49I think I want to check the fishing rods now, see what's up.
18:52So the hole's iced over, my line's stuck.
18:55So I could have a fish on and I wouldn't even know it.
19:06Oh, look at this.
19:08A little crab.
19:10Oh, he was tangled up in my line.
19:12He's kind of fuzzy.
19:15Oh, it's a female crab.
19:16Oh, she's got eggs.
19:18See, those are her eggs in there.
19:21I don't know what kind of crab that is, but let's put her back.
19:25The shrimp and crabs have been at it.
19:27Look, the bait's all bones.
19:28There's hardly any flesh left on the bait.
19:30I'll have to freshen that up.
19:36I got the rods rebaited and dropped back down.
19:39We'll see if anything hits while I make some food.
19:58Oh, curses.
19:59Well, I just lost an egg.
20:01I'll have to refinance the house to get another.
20:03Let's see if we can keep this one on the skillet.
20:07Stay where you are, Mr. Egg.
20:11Hey, hey, nope.
20:12Nope.
20:19There we go.
20:20A little egg and sausage sandwich.
20:22The ketchup isn't frozen, but it's thicker than normal.
20:31Well, we made it to sunrise.
20:33I think it's time to check my fishing rods and see if we got anything.
20:37Oh, something.
20:40What was that?
20:41Oh, something dropped off.
20:43It wasn't a crab, but there was like a starfish or something attached to it.
20:47Saw it drop off right at the hole.
20:56Oh, it's cold.
20:57It's about 10 degrees outside.
21:01Oh, it is a beautiful day out here.
21:04I think I'm going to clean up a little bit.
21:06Then we're going to go check the shrimp pots.
21:21We got one starfish, and there's a crab in here, but it's not a king crab.
21:30I don't know what kind of crab that is, but we'll let it go.
21:36There, there's a sculpin.
21:38See, he's going up like this to make himself big so you can't swallow him.
21:42We'll let him go.
21:43I'm going to throw a fresh salmon head in there.
21:45Try it again.
21:46See what happens.
21:53Here's the second shrimp pot.
22:02That's disappointing.
22:03There were so many shrimp in this spot last year, they were getting stuck in your rope.
22:06Been really weird weather this year, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that the animals
22:11are behaving different.
22:13All right, I'm going to go check one of the crab's traps.
22:20This is a new crab trap John dropped down last night.
22:23We'll see if it's got anything in it.
22:33There you go.
22:34There's one.
22:37There's two.
22:38Two good-looking males right there.
22:41Not skunked.
22:42Look at that.
22:49Yeah, two crabs.
22:50It's not bad for less than 24 hours.
22:57Tell you what, this spot's been a bit of a bust.
23:00I don't know if I want to camp here a second night.
23:03There you go.
23:06There you go.
23:10There you go.
23:10There you go.
23:10Oh, the wind's starting to pick up, and that's making me a little nervous.
23:13Never tried this tent in high winds before, but I wouldn't want to test it.
23:23There you go.
23:24There you go.
23:28There you go.
23:31There you go.
23:42The crab fishing is a bit slow I think I'm going to drop this stuff off at John's place
23:46and then go grab my gun and do a little tarmigand hunting.
23:49After John gets off work, I think we can come back and check the pots.
24:14The hardest part about hunting ptarmigan is finding them.
24:18I'm looking for an all-white bird in the middle of all this snow.
24:21That's why it's so important to go on these sunny days.
24:41Right there, I just saw one ptarmigan up on that burm and he just hopped over into the brush.
24:51Oh there they go, they just flew over there.
24:54These are all ptarmigan footprints right here.
24:57All right let's go find their buddies.
25:06You can see a whole bunch of ptarmigan prints right along those willows.
25:10Right there.
25:15I keep seeing ptarmigan but they're skittish, very skittish.
25:30Saw a red fox run out in front of me.
25:32In the old days they used to hunt them by running them over with the snow machine.
25:36Doesn't damage the pelt as much as shooting them.
25:42Yeah, the sun's getting low. I think it's time to get heading back but this has been real fun.
25:56I think it's time to take a look at the snow machine.
25:57Hey John, sorry to keep you waiting.
26:02All right we're gonna go check some crab pots.
26:12Yeah there wasn't much ice forming yesterday, today it's a different story.
26:23It's another male right?
26:27There we go.
26:28There we go.
26:31They are so cool.
26:33All right.
26:35Okay, I'll put them in the cooler before he freezes up.
26:48That's a big old crab right there.
26:50Look at all the sea lice.
26:53They're eating on the bait.
26:55All right.
27:02All right, we're gonna try the shrimp pot.
27:09Another one of those little fuzzy crabs.
27:12Oh, it got a little sea urchin in here.
27:24Oh, that is interesting. It's a definitely an ocean flavor, but it's different than I've had.
27:30A little sea urchin.
27:32I've seen this big foy.
27:55I'll tell you what, I'm glad I pulled the tent down. It's supposed to get the 30 mile per hour
27:59winds tonight.
28:05My feet are so wet and cold, I cannot wait to get these boots off.
28:10Oh, this is nice.
28:14I'll see you in the morning.
28:20All right.
28:30I didn't sleep very well last night. I woke up with this headache. It's just nasty.
28:42I'm not 100%, but I'm feeling a little better. So I think I'm gonna go try doing a little hunting.
28:47All right. Oh, it's colder today. I'm gonna feel it in the nose.
29:02The ice shelf broke away here in front of town. Just last week, people were gold mining and crabbing out
29:08there.
29:18Look at that thing. Yeah, that's a sweet K truck.
29:23Look at that thing.
29:42Yeah, I just haven't seen anything.
29:51Well, me and John are gonna go set some more crab pots. We heard there's a spot a little further
29:56down that's producing.
30:10This place is called Cripple River. It's a little seasonal native community where they come here for subsistence fishing in
30:17the summer.
30:17Nobody here this time of year. There's a lot of little seasonal fishing communities like this around Alaska.
30:25Yeah.
30:41There's a second one.
30:45My fingers are getting cold just watching you.
30:47Well, it's actually mine are hot because if you keep moving then you really don't feel the cold.
30:56It's a nice big hole.
30:57I know.
31:18Well, Becca and the kids are gonna be landing at the airport in about 20 minutes so I'm gonna freshen
31:21up and run over to the airport.
31:27Hey. Hey, buddy. Come here.
31:32Hey, Tommy.
31:34Hey.
31:35Good to see you, buddy.
31:36Hi.
31:37Hi.
31:38Thanks for coming.
31:39There you go.
31:40There you go.
31:41There you go.
31:42Here, Tommy.
31:45Everybody, welcome to Nome.
31:47Yay!
31:48First time for Jacob and Mommy, but Nathan and Tommy have both been here, haven't you?
31:52Yeah.
31:53Alright, we'll give you a little tour.
31:54See there? There's an old abandoned gold dredge up there.
31:57Yeah.
31:58See all those, the dredge boats over there?
32:00That's cool.
32:00Yeah, and that's the harbor.
32:02The old gold mining equipment over there.
32:04That's cool.
32:06Well, we have a dinner appointment tonight, though.
32:09You guys, you remember John?
32:10His wife is gonna make some king crab Filipino food for us.
32:14That's nice.
32:15Dad?
32:16Alright, guys.
32:19Hey.
32:20Hey.
32:22Hey.
32:23Hi, guys.
32:25Hey, let me introduce you to my wife, Rebecca.
32:27And this is Jacob.
32:29Jocelyn here is actually quite a successful TikToker and YouTuber.
32:32And she's got a YouTube channel, Panaisa Alaska.
32:35Well, if you want to see more videos about Nome, definitely check it out.
32:38Put a link in the description below.
32:39Thank you.
32:39Oh, look at this.
32:43Olympia Pancet.
32:45Oh, look at that.
32:46Dried them fresh.
32:48So I usually put them upside down so all the juices stay inside.
32:52Oh, those are good.
32:54It's the one.
32:54I think we'll keep it cold.
32:56You see a couple of boxes missing.
32:57Right from Wasilla, the airport and the airport.
32:59So my sister-in-law dropped me in.
33:01That's good.
33:03That monster.
33:04What?
33:04My first knuckle.

34:42I'm going to shut the door.

34:54A lot of mining equipment, drudges out there.
34:57Can you see him yet, Mama?

35:02You see him?
35:03There's a whole bunch of ptarmigan over in this field.
35:06But it's across the street from the high school.
35:08So that might actually be a crime if we try to take him out.
35:11Sure.
35:12Oh.
35:13Oh, yeah.
35:13Oh, look right there.
35:14See that?

35:18Let's see if he'll even stick around when we get out of the car.
35:24Oh, he's flying.
35:31Got to kind of hit it at a go so you don't slide up.
35:34Yeah, he's just right there.
35:36You want me to get him?
35:37I could take him with the shocker.
35:38Let's see if he's really chill.

43:55We're going to bed, we'll see you guys then
43:58Well good morning everybody
44:00It's a beautiful Sunday here in Gnome and I'm going to get some breakfast going
44:08We got a couple of leftover danishes we want to eat for breakfast
44:10Of course they're a little bit more stale than they were yesterday
44:12So I'm going to run them under water and throw them in an oven
44:16Put them in a paper bag and just briefly put it under water
44:20Heat up the oven to about 350
44:23Give it about 5 minutes and they'll be soft and warm
44:28Ooh feel that
44:30Feel it
44:30Is it better?
44:32Yeah it's better
44:33Come on
44:35Well it's Sunday and we're going to church in the next 15 minutes or so
44:39So I gotta get the car started
44:46It's negative 10
44:48It's a little cold
44:50Oh the ptarmigan froze nicely
44:54Alright guys come on get your shoes on
44:56Okay
44:58Turning on your electric jacket
45:00I know it really was a good buy
45:01It keeps me warm
45:02I love it
45:05Car's been warming up for 16 minutes and it's still icy
45:10It's cold out
45:16Looks like we're here at church
45:17We're going to put the camera down and we'll see you guys in a little bit
45:20It's a nice crew
45:21Hi

45:27Yeah but we have to go get them on
45:31Here you guys want to go get changed and then let's go look for muskox
45:35Mom really wants to go see if we can spot a muskox
45:37Yeah
45:41Muskox, muskox
45:42What a pretty day though
45:44The ocean is starting to freeze up again
45:46Look at that
45:46See right there there's a snow machine trail along the road
45:49That's the Iditarod trail
45:51It's about an 1100 mile race
45:53It ends in Gnome
45:56There's wild muskox around the city of Gnome
45:59You can see them up on the hills from time to time
46:03Check up on the mountain up there the dots
46:05Yep
46:08I'm pretty sure we saw a muskox the other day
46:10It was so far it was just a little dot on the mountain
46:13But the dots not there anymore so I think it was a muskox
46:17A little knob right there
46:18How far from the top are they?
46:21Pretty near the top
46:22I mean that looks like that might be two muskox
46:25We're going to get some crabs
46:29I'm going to take some crabs back to some friends
46:37That's nice
46:41That's nice
46:41There's a nice one
46:48There's a nice chunky one
46:54Got some crab in the bed there
46:57I don't want them to freeze before we get home
46:58So I'm going to bury them in snow
47:04There we go
47:07It's snippy out there
47:09You know in Hawaii how they have the honor boxes?
47:11Those are like king crab honor boxes

47:27So I'm going to go ahead and cook them and freeze them tonight
47:51We got all these hot crab legs
47:53Let's take them out to negative 10 and flash freeze them
48:00Let those freeze
48:03They'll go faster than the freezer
48:05Well John just texted me and said he got a whole bunch of crabs in his pot
48:08And I have some stuff I want to give him
48:10So we're going to run over and say goodbye to him and see how we did
48:16It's the king of gnome crabbing
48:20You got nine and two pots?
48:22Yeah one of them had four the other had five
48:24That's pretty impressive
48:28You sure about that John?

48:33I will give him a loving home
48:35These are nice crabs man
48:38Look at that
48:40Look at that home

49:31That is a pile of crab legs
49:34Gotta go take them out onto the deck
49:41Alright
