00:16Our camp was destroyed, and I saw footprints going around our tent, 18 inches long.
00:23This door's about to come off the hinges, and whatever that is, is going to come in
00:27here on me.
00:29These are the chilling encounters where people trespassed into the domain of the unexplained
00:34and paid the price.
00:36There was a seven-foot silver-gray creature coming up the ridge towards me.
00:43I was petrified.
00:48For many centuries, people have reported strange and sometimes terrifying encounters with what
00:54they describe as monsters.
00:56Its eyes just lit up in the moon, and we're like, that is nothing I've ever seen.
01:03If I try to run, I'd be dead.
01:05Now, for the first time, some are sharing their experiences.
01:10Is there a pattern to their encounters?
01:14It was just terrifying.
01:17And if so, what could it mean?
01:27America's Pacific Northwest, the rugged mountains and dense rainforests here are allegedly home
01:34to a monster.
01:37And one state, Washington, is a hot zone for seeing it.
01:42The monster's name, Sasquatch, or Bigfoot.
01:48So this area is millions of acres.
01:51It is very sparsely populated in terms of humans.
01:54It's really what you would consider a perfect place for a shy creature like Bigfoot to be.
02:02According to a database kept by the Bigfoot Field Research Organization, there have been over 700 reported
02:10sightings since the 19th century.
02:13Native American oral traditions going back centuries detail a race of giants living in this forest.
02:21When settlers arrived in this area, they also began documenting the legends and sightings.
02:27One missionary, Elkanah Walker, wrote a letter in 1840 describing some of the legends that he learned from the Spokane
02:34tribe.
02:35Fur hunters and trappers also described seeing a large, hairy beast that walked on two legs.
02:43But a young boy named Daniel Hamilton knew nothing about these tales when he went hunting with his family
02:49on the Olympic Peninsula in 1981.
02:52It was six or seven years old when my dad and my uncle said,
02:57hey, do you want to learn to hunt?
02:58So we go to the hunting camp.
03:01So the next morning, we get up super early.
03:06But it was about a half a mile from the camp to the tree stand.
03:09We weren't actually going to hunt.
03:11He just wanted me to experience nature.
03:14My dad's looking through his napsack.
03:16He forgot something.
03:17He goes, I'll be right back.
03:19And he goes, running back down the trail.
03:22So I sit up in there.
03:24It was five in the morning.
03:28Started nodding off.
03:30I was just about to fall asleep.
03:32And my leg jerked.
03:34And I, ugh.
03:35I looked down.
03:36And my boot lace is untied.
03:40Didn't think anything of it.
03:42So I go and I tie it again.
03:46I start nodding off again.
03:48And I jerk again.
03:49And immediately I go down and I look at my boot.
03:53And my boot lace is untied again.
03:58And I'm like, dad, you better stop messing with me.
04:01And I don't hear nothing.
04:05I tie my boot again.
04:07And I'm laser locked on my boot now.
04:09And all of a sudden, I hear this loud crack.
04:15I'm screaming at the top of my lungs.
04:17Dad, it's not funny.
04:19You're scaring me.
04:20Stop on top.
04:20I'm losing my mind.
04:23I look over to see my dad sprinting up this path.
04:28That's when I realized he wasn't the one who was messing around with this.
04:34My dad was a Vietnam vet.
04:35And I see him take his rifle off of his shoulder.
04:39And he squats down, looks around, scanning back and forth.
04:44And he stops.
04:47And he goes, Daniel, get out of the tree right now.
04:54And he's like, run back to camp.
04:56Don't stop.
04:56I'll be right behind you.
04:58Run.
05:01So I take off running.
05:03My dad felt that something was potentially dangerous up there.
05:08So we packed up and we left the camp.
05:12As we were leaving, I was thinking, you know, maybe it was a bear.
05:16As a seven-year-old, I just moved on.
05:20Three years later, Daniel's father decides to return for a weekend getaway.
05:26This time, with a larger group.
05:29I was excited because this is a big camping trip.
05:33My dad, my little brother, my uncle went back to the hunting camp.
05:39They set up this big tent.
05:41There was so much stuff to do there.
05:44Swimming in the stream, fishing in the stream.
05:46The whole day was just kind of chilling around in the camp.
05:50We were super stoked.
05:57And we heard this yell or scream or something way off in the distance.
06:08And I go, Dad, was that a bear?
06:10And my dad goes, yeah, that was a bear.
06:14So we were about our day.
06:15We were just all talking and stuff.
06:17Well, it got late and we went to bed.
06:20And I hear something moving out in our camp.
06:26And I open my eyes and I sit up real quick.
06:30And my dad and my uncle both have rifles.
06:35And my dad does this, like, immediately, telling me to keep my mouth shut.
06:42The front flap had a small little gap in it.
06:45And I just remember seeing something walk right by that gap.
06:49It was super quick.
06:50It just went by, it just went, boop, and it was gone.
06:55About that time, I hear something walk right behind me and drag its nails across the tent.
07:06They sounded like they were long fingernails.
07:09I thought I was trying to cut open the whole tent.
07:13My dad gets on his knees and he's now following it with his rifle.
07:21And then you hear it run off into the woods.
07:26For the rest of the night, Daniel's family sits frozen in their tent,
07:30unsure if whatever they heard is still out there.
07:35My uncle saw sunlight coming through the front of the tent.
07:38He walks out and I hear him say,
07:41Dean, you got to come out here and see this.
07:45I burst through the tent and our camp was destroyed.
07:51Lawn chairs were all twisted.
07:53Cooler lids were just completely ripped off.
07:57And I saw footprints going around our tent, probably 15 to 18 inches long.
08:05Dad, what happened?
08:07And he's like, we got to go.
08:09Guys, we need to go.
08:13And just as we start leaving the camp, we hear this scream.
08:17No!
08:20And you feel it come through the trees.
08:22No!
08:26My uncle grabs my little brother and we are now running.
08:35I jump in the bed of the third truck and as we're pulling off, my uncle just starts shooting.
08:43I'm like up near the cab of the truck and I peek my head up.
08:48Just in time to see this large branch come flying through the air.
08:54Like it was thrown like a spear.
08:56And we took off.
09:03We stayed in the bed of the truck the whole way to my uncle's house.
09:07I asked my dad what was going on and he wouldn't tell me anything.
09:10But we never went back there again.
09:14The screams Daniel heard in those woods never left him.
09:18For decades, they've echoed in his memory.
09:24Pushing him to search for answers.
09:30Including listening to an audio recording made in Northern California in 1971 and 1972
09:37by Bigfoot researcher Ron Moorhead and journalist Al Barry.
09:49Many in the cryptozoology community consider these sounds to be compelling evidence that Bigfoot exists.
09:58This audio tape recording is considered a very big deal by believers.
10:03It has a range of noises from whistles to growls that Moorhead's group believes are made by a family of
10:10Sasquatches.
10:11And some of the vocalizations can be described as shrieks or screams.
10:19For Daniel, the sounds are all too familiar.
10:23The screams are consistent with what people like Ron Moorhead have recorded, like the Sierra sounds.
10:28They matched almost to a T what I heard.
10:33When you think about it, what else could it be but Bigfoot?
10:47It's a patchwork of rapid development and stubborn wilderness.
10:53Although Southern and Western Maryland are considered regional hotspots for Bigfoot sightings,
10:59Anne Arundel County is not.
11:02That changed during construction of a mall in 2000, when workers report seeing a 12-foot monster.
11:11In July of 2000, the Baltimore Sun prints a wild headline that reads,
11:17Policemen, workers track roaming 12-foot creature.
11:22The article cites a police officer who finds a human-shaped footprint 15 to 20 inches long.
11:31A study done on the footprint by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources concludes that the creature is most likely
11:39a black bear.
11:43But one man, a local anthropologist, decides to investigate further.
11:50I am a cultural anthropologist with a specialty in medical anthropology.
11:54And I have worked at the National Institutes of Health for 14 years.
11:59Early in my research, I began coming across earlier ethnographic material dealing with the Sasquatch.
12:07And I began doing serious studies on Bigfoot in contemporary North America.
12:13Now, my first thought, is Bigfoot Sasquatch Gigantopithecus, or are they another hominid form that we don't yet know?
12:21Gigantopithecus was the largest primate to have ever lived, and it was huge.
12:26It was 10 feet tall and weighed over 1,000 pounds.
12:30It's considered extinct, but jawbones and teeth have been found in China.
12:36Not much is known about this ape except that it lived in parts of Asia.
12:40And many think that it could actually walk on two legs, but not all scientists agree about that.
12:44Some even believe that it may not be extinct and somehow survived.
12:52Since Sasquatch sightings in Maryland and elsewhere often describe the creature as large and ape-like,
12:59Kenneth thinks he's on to something.
13:02He decides to start his monster quest in a wildlife preserve called Seneca Creek State Park.
13:10And so over months, I began systematically looking for footprints and trying to make contact.
13:19I was trying to figure out what would work.
13:23And I began to do basic calls.
13:28I would go out early in the morning and late at night.
13:40And this one night, coming up the river, I finally got the responses back.
13:49That was what did it for me.
13:53They were telling me, we know you're here.
13:56The responses draw Kenneth in.
13:59He can now focus on this stretch of forest, convinced it might hold the next piece of evidence.
14:06Not long after, Kenneth returns to the same location.
14:09I was up on a ridgeline, about 80 feet up, looking for footprints.
14:15And I literally almost tripped over a bone.
14:20And I look down and I'm like, I started moving these leaves.
14:23And there was this bone pile.
14:27And I'm going through and I was getting femur of a deer.
14:31I would get another one of a raccoon.
14:33And I would get a head of a coyote.
14:35They were piling these bones up, but then they were trying to hide them.
14:41Then I came across these tools.
14:45One tool was very elongated and the inside had been carved out.
14:51It looked almost like a curved knife.
14:55Then there was a much larger tool found with it that almost looked like it had been used for grinding.
15:01On the back of it, there was some etching work.
15:06These did not resemble any known tools that I had ever seen.
15:09And that is what really galvanized me to continue working in this area.
15:17Strange sounds draw Kenneth into the stretch of remote wilderness.
15:21But the discovery of handcrafted tools, evidence of a creature with unexpected intelligence, marks a turning point in his investigation.
15:31Is it possible he's found a new form of hominid or even a descendant of Gigantopithecus?
15:40In October of 2014, I decided to go night camping.
15:45No tent, just a bedroll.
15:48The ridgeline was about a two-mile walk in.
15:51So you would slowly go up and up and up.
15:54I began to notice footsteps.
15:57And the tree line on my right and to my left.
16:01And as I turned to go up to the top plateau, I looked to my left.
16:06There was a creature over eight and a half feet tall.
16:11Huge four and a half foot shoulders.
16:14I looked to my right.
16:18And there was a seven foot silver gray creature coming up the ridge towards me.
16:27This was my first visual sighting of these creatures.
16:32And I could hear the calls at different points.
16:36As if they were triangulating my position.
16:39I was petrified.
16:44The ridge line that I was on was very precarious.
16:48It was risky, but I took off toward where I planned to camp and I made it there safely.
16:52Had I moved in the wrong direction, I would have fallen 80 feet down a precipice.
17:00Then it got deathly silent.
17:04And then they began to yell and scream.
17:09And then this is what fascinated me.
17:13To my right, I heard clicking language.
17:22It sounded like I was going to be attacked at any moment.
17:28And these two pair of eyes are just looking at me.
17:33I am transfixed at these eyes.
17:38They're milky white, staring down at me at the seven foot level.
17:43In my estimation, there were at least four to five individuals surrounding me.
17:49I didn't do anything to draw attention for fear that I would be attacked.
17:54And so I'm very much watching my movement.
17:57And throughout the evening, they would make their presence known.
18:06I never in my life ever thought I'd be so grateful to see the sun reach the horizon.
18:16In the weeks after his encounter, Kenneth tries to piece everything together.
18:23Although he doesn't believe what he saw was a type of Gigantopithecus, he does believe Sasquatch is real.
18:32I think that the Sasquatch lives in northern Maryland.
18:36I really don't think Sasquatch is Gigantopithecus.
18:39I think these creatures are of a hominid form.
18:42I think they're closely related to us, but co-evolved.
18:46What I see behaviorally, culturally, linguistically from these creatures is that they are highly advanced.
18:56According to Kenneth, the creatures never did anything other than observe his movements.
19:03But not all trespassers get off so easily.
19:14In 2011, Stacy Brown Sr. and his son are camping in Florida's northern Panhandle
19:19when they capture images of a strange animal on their thermal camera.
19:25Their footage is considered by many to be the only known video of the creature known as the skunk ape.
19:35The skunk ape is described as a large primate, the same as the Sasquatch, but slightly smaller,
19:43the stripe down its back, and allegedly stinks to high heaven.
19:48Florida has the most skunk ape sightings anywhere in America, mostly centered in the Everglades.
19:55There's no fossil evidence for this creature,
19:58and so most experts think that sightings are probably of bear or some are just hoaxes.
20:04But Stacy Brown Jr. feels differently.
20:09And in 2012, he decides to return to where his father filmed the monster.
20:15My dad was a very no-nonsense guy, very skeptical.
20:21I had that moment with him, and I know what we did.
20:26I went back to the same creek that my dad filmed the creature just further down.
20:32This cabin is like a utility shed in the middle of nowhere that's been converted into a cabin.
20:37By staying in the cabin, I was hoping to be able to hide,
20:41and then I would come out of the cabin with my camera ready and capture this on footage.
20:46Parked in front of the cabin and started walking the trails.
20:50I hiked down about a mile and a half, and I hear, like, a moaning.
20:58The feeling that came over me was, like, dread.
21:02It was just a...
21:08See, I don't know if it's like someone was crying, and I don't know what it was.
21:13I'm not a scared person.
21:16But I was in a situation that I did not want to be in.
21:22I turned around, made a quick pace to get out of the woods.
21:27I think they followed me all the way up this hill and back to the cabin.
21:32I turned all my flashlights on, pulled my gun out, and I just sat there on the porch.
21:39And did not move, just listened and listened.
21:45And then it got about one o'clock, I went and got into bed.
21:51And I'm asleep.
21:54But I start hearing something hit the metal roof.
22:01I'm still kind of half asleep.
22:04And then I hear a...
22:08Heavy footsteps on the porch.
22:12I'm on the bed, just looking at the door.
22:14And then it just starts.
22:16Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
22:20Just banging for 10, 15 seconds.
22:24The only thing holding the door closed is a chain lock.
22:27That thing is, like, stretching out.
22:30I'm standing up at this point.
22:32My gun is in the car.
22:35On the other side of what's on the door.
22:43like seriously i was so scared that this thing was coming in so i pick up this little dive knife
22:49i had
22:50thinking this door's about to come off the hinges and whatever that is is going to come in here on
22:55me it stops i'm just standing there like thought that was it i did not go back to
23:08sleep it was probably morning before i actually came out of the door and it was gone
23:17after what he believes was a second skunk ape encounter
23:22stacy brown jr intensifies his search returning to toraya state park with close friends josh and dean
23:30determined to capture the evidence he's been chasing
23:35to increase their chances of spotting the skunk ape the group decides to split up
23:42stacy sets up by a muddy creek bed looking for footprints
23:47while josh and dean head closer to the cabin cabin is surrounded by nothing but woods
23:57there is one road that goes to the cabin so from where we parked you've got a half a mile
24:04to walk
24:05to get to the actual cabin and i hear something off to the side of the vehicle
24:16i'm like hey did you hear that yeah probably a deer or something
24:21he's not worried about anything like there's no reason to be afraid of nothing right
24:29this thing growled extremely deep extremely bassy like nothing i have ever heard in my life
24:38something catches my eye
24:43my buddy he's got his gun out and pointed and now i pulled mine out next thing you know his
24:49back is up
24:50against mine and i'm like dean why are you so close and he's like there's something behind us too
24:59that means there's two of them the silhouette is bigger than me josh and dean are the biggest people
25:07dean's like six five josh is like six two and both of them scared
25:14i grab my backpack ready to go to the cabin
25:21i'm seeing it in front of me he's seeing it from behind us
25:27as we're walking up the road you can hear the two of them walking with us like every step i
25:34take
25:35this thing takes a step we get off the road onto the porch of the cabin
25:43i'm more scared than i've ever been in my entire life
25:48and i get a call from josh
25:53he's like please come get us right now the damn thing is still here i'm looking at it stacy please
25:58come get us i could hear the fear just hey hang tight try to watch where it goes try to
26:05keep it
26:05there to see his vehicle pull up was like the best sense of relief i've ever had in my life
26:15when i showed up josh is paler than he always is dean just wanted out just like let's please
26:21get out of here it had to calm them both down i thought maybe we'd stay and hang out for
26:26a little
26:26bit to try to get some more evidence in the morning the next morning stacy believes he finds the
26:34evidence he's been looking for we find the first series of tracks crossing the dirt road we found 17
26:40tracks total four of them were castable and then we found the hair sample right above one of the tracks
26:47i sent it to a lab results come back inconclusive
26:53years after that night in torreia stacy still holds onto the proof he found
26:59and the unshakable belief that something extraordinary walks those woods
27:05yeah i wanted to prove it real whether you believe me or not these things are real
27:14in the shadow of mount rainier lies the puyallup valley a place of ancient beauty and also ancient
27:22beliefs the puyallup valley has been the ancestral homeland of the puyallup tribe for centuries
27:30the puyallup tribe has a strong belief that if the deceased remains or disturbed in some way it can
27:37also disturb the spirit there's really no telling how many unmarked graves are spread throughout the
27:46puyallup valley but we know it's a lot and that they are frequently disturbed
27:52in 2004 excavation of a bridge project had to be halted after uncovering an ancient burial ground
28:02many workers reported being tormented by intense nightmares until tribal leaders perform sacred
28:08rituals at the site in 2011 two friends say they also encountered a malevolent monster
28:18while staying at a friend's home in puyalla i met charlie at an outdoor school focused on survival and we
28:29in pat and charlie's survival training was ever as terrifying as what unfolded at their friend's
28:35house deep in the puyallup valley
28:40their property does back up to kind of a wild park so there was a lot of wildlife around
28:47we started out that night just sitting around the fire chatting
28:52we were sharing some of our old stories with our friend
28:55and i get tired i go to bed and i start to hear stuff on the roof
29:05and right away i have this feeling that there's something in the room with me
29:10and i look up at the ceiling above me there's this creature
29:16it's completely black and across the entire ceiling
29:20it's some unspecified being that comes to be known as the entity
29:27i begin to feel like i'm being pressed into the mattress
29:33i'm thinking if i can get this laptop on the nightstand open i'll be fine i don't know why that
29:38was the
29:39thought and i go to move and i can't move i'm freaking out now and it feels like something is
29:46pushing down on my arm and i'm looking over my shoulder at this thing
29:53and it collapses from the outer edge into this shadow thing and it shoots from the center of the
30:00ceiling over to the wall down the wall and when it hits the windows it dissipates
30:09the next morning charlie and pat meet around the breakfast table so i tell him what happened to
30:15me something weird was going on last night i said wow our friend was telling me that since she's been
30:24here she's been seeing big dark shadows move across the ground we kept trying to explain it away
30:32that evening the men decide to bunk together in the same room he said no way am i sleeping in
30:39that
30:39room alone where a shadow descended upon me we're gonna tough it out together in the big room
30:47i'm sleeping dracula coffin style i don't want anything to touch me and i feel something wrap around my wrist
30:59i feel my arm start to pull off my body like this like i'm being opened up he startled me
31:08awake because
31:08he's like ah ah and then i see it for the first time
31:18in puyat washington pat and charlie have encountered a menacing entity
31:27terrified they don't know what to do next it looked like a flat like two-dimensional entity
31:35with a trail behind it it just streaked right across the wall
31:41at this point it feels really aggressive how are we going to get this thing to go away
31:48for some reason in my head i just know that if i can get the light on i'll be fine
31:54but the light is
31:56all the way across the room charlie goes for the light the light didn't work we're just reaching for
32:07any idea we had and i remembered the practice of smudging as a way of kind of purifying a space
32:15i had just harvested a whole bunch of sagebrush from eastern washington so we were like maybe we
32:21can smudge with the sage we don't have any other option at that point it went completely ballistic
32:31that was the first time we started to see it leap into three-dimensional space
32:37started coming off the wall jumping through space getting on top of us it felt very hostile
32:46that's kind of when it reached the crescendo
32:51we both completely lost it and passed out
32:59both men remain convinced and believe the monstrous creature was somehow tied to the legends around
33:04puyallup's ancient burial grounds
33:09it did really feel like whatever it was was very much a part of either the house or the history
33:16of
33:16indigenous peoples on the land it did have that kind of get out of here feel to it you don't
33:23really get
33:23in someone's face like that unless you're telling them to get the hell out

33:33but for one teenage girl the terror would take on an entirely different form
33:40today the great plains of kansas provide home for hundreds of species of birds and small mammals
33:49but it was once much more diverse
33:55thirty thousand years ago what's now kansas looked very different it was the last ice age and huge
34:02predators lived there creatures like the saber-toothed tigers lions bigger than those living in africa
34:08today giant bears dire wolves most locals will tell you that all signs of large predators are gone from
34:19this area you wouldn't expect kansas to be a hot spot for strange sightings but with all its rivers
34:28woods and farmland it actually makes sense there's plenty of room for something large to stay hidden
34:37stories of unusual creatures have lingered here for generations back in the 1800s settlers told stories
34:44about a huge hairy beast that walked on two legs they called old chef
34:51and in 2025 two people near topeka said that they saw something huge and human-like just as night fell

35:06joy stone says she experienced a different kind of monster one she says resembled a massive terrifying dog
35:17i grew up on a farm in southeast kansas i knew early on that i was born to be a
35:23nurse so that's what i
35:25started school for that was 1977 i was 17. dale was my boyfriend yeah i really liked him and he
35:35liked me
35:35because i wasn't a girly girl we decided to go walking back in the field behind our house the stream
35:42was
35:42running it was pleasant down there so we were walking along and he spotted an area where the grass was
35:48laid
35:49down something had been sleeping in that area it was almost a perfect circle probably 14 feet across
35:59it was gigantic southeast kansas don't think that runs into pack were coyotes i'm afraid that they might
36:05attack and then he urinated on that batting
36:13and he said if they smell that a human has been here maybe they'll move on back further i guess

36:20thought you know humans were at the top of the food chain not in this case i think this thing

36:26thinking oh you messed up trying to mark my territory
36:33in the animal kingdom huge amounts of information are communicated through urine markers age sex
36:40temperament and of course territorial boundaries
36:46two days later choice is at home studying when she's startled by the sound of branches scraping
36:54against the roof i had two windows from ceiling to floor
37:01and i thought now wait a second what's blocking my view
37:07there was a black mass just blocking everything
37:12the side profile of this thing that muzzle was so big i was horrified
37:26on a quiet night of studying joystone's peace is shattered by the visitation of a massive dog-like
37:34creature i could feel this thing just bearing down on me with its eyes it was a yellowish hue it
37:42almost
37:42looked like neon i was horrified because this thing had such wide mass and then all of a sudden
37:53the hair on the back of my neck stood up and i kind of froze
38:01it was the growl that froze me it was deep guttural it just sounded like pure evil
38:15i was shaking so hard my teeth were chattering
38:22in the nights that follow joyce gets little sleep
38:27perplexed and paranoid over what she experienced i no longer felt safe and that's
38:33when i called dale and i started to cry i think i'm being stalked by a werewolf
38:40i said can i come stay at your house tonight his house was all the way across town he had
38:47a pit bull
38:48that was huge named king i felt very safe and secure knowing that king was outside patrolling
38:56but her sense of safety doesn't last
39:04we're sitting in the living room floor all of a sudden
39:09we hear this growl and it's there
39:16and it locked eyes with him
39:20and the eyes are bright it must have heard us because they knew exactly where we were at i thought
39:28oh no
39:31this thing is growling us and then we hear
39:37and i realized this thing's tearing the siding off the house
39:45we don't have any way out they think i'd die like this
39:51then i hear
39:52and he goes oh my god my dog is out there king
40:00the dog jumped it
40:03king bit it
40:10and then he gets quiet and you just know it's over it's over
40:19the neighbor heard the commotion and the screams and so he called the police and said you better get
40:27some people here because my neighbor just murdered his girlfriend i heard it
40:33and we hear sirens coming i hope they'd scare it when they go by and then we hear
