00:34The trees in this forest that are surrounding me right now are older than the pyramids in

00:48Some of these trees were already 4,000 years old when the United States was born.
00:55They go back further than almost all recorded history.
01:02When you're at a place like this, it changes your perspective, because these trees are truly
01:10the great ancestors of life on Earth.
01:16They have been here for so long and will more than likely be here long after I'm gone.
01:24And it's very rare to be in a place where you have that sense of time.
01:29It changes your perspective on not only where we are and what we've done as a species on
01:36this planet, but where we might be able to go.

02:36I will wait forever, always looking straight
02:40Thinking, counting, all the odds you break
02:53Growing up, I remember feeling so excited about the future
02:57Impatient, actually, because I couldn't wait for it to arrive
03:07I watched movies and TV shows that told stories
03:10Of what felt like inevitable human progress
03:13Filling me with a sense of hope and possibility
03:17And it wasn't just on TV
03:19We were launching rockets
03:22Markets were booming
03:23And the internet was coming online
03:27Hope is back in America
03:29We are on the right track to the 21st century
03:323, 2, 1, happy 2000
03:37The next generation and the generations that follow
03:40Will live in a world far better than the one we have today
03:42I went to work as a futurist
03:44Helping governments and major companies around the world
03:47Better think about and plan for the future
03:51Not working to predict the future
03:53But looking at long-term trends
03:55And the impacts they were going to have across society
03:58It was an exciting time
04:00And it really did feel like we were on the brink of something extraordinary
04:05New technology was poised to bring about unprecedented prosperity and connection
04:10Less poverty, more peace, and shorter work weeks
04:14Were all right around the corner
04:18But then something happened
04:20Or didn't happen
04:21And that future never really showed up
04:24We are now working more
04:26Not less
04:28We have become more technologically connected
04:30And yet more deeply divided
04:32The consequences of long-overlooked environmental destruction
04:36Are showing up in terrifying ways
04:39And the stories we tell ourselves about tomorrow
04:42Are now stories of dystopia
04:44Where everything falls apart
04:47Our feelings about tomorrow have shifted from excitement to dread
04:51And the future has become something to avoid
04:54Rather than to build
04:56But over the years
04:57My work has convinced me
04:59The future is not set in stone
05:01We have the power to shape it
05:03That's what's led me here
05:05To making this show
05:06I'm looking for the people
05:08Who are building better futures
05:09For themselves
05:11For their kids
05:12And for the world around them
05:15Because the truth is
05:16We have choices to make right now
05:18And these choices are going to have major
05:21Long-lasting effects
05:24So I'm headed out on a journey
05:25To meet the brilliant minds
05:27And brave pioneers
05:28Changing our world
05:29And reinventing tomorrow
05:32People who believe
05:33That we have everything we need
05:34To create better futures
05:36Not perfect
05:37But better
05:38And something each generation can build on

06:14What I'm really most interested in doing here
06:17Is trying to find the people
06:19And the ideas
06:20That are going to kind of show us
06:23What futures could be
06:24And from there figure out which ones we want
06:33So this is great
06:34So let's talk a little bit about
06:36The science of motivation
06:37What do we think
06:38As my journey begins
06:40I'm interested in why
06:41Even with all these tools and technologies available
06:44So many of us
06:45Find it difficult to think about the future
06:48That's brought me here
06:49To sit down with a behavioral psychologist
06:51Named Hal Hirschfield
06:53Our future selves
06:54Often feel like strangers to us
06:57They feel like sort of different people
06:59All together
07:00One of the big findings
07:02In the early days
07:03Of what's called social neuroscience
07:04Is that the brain can tell what's me
07:06And what's not me
07:08Which makes sense in a way
07:09If I'm sitting in a scanner
07:11And I think about myself
07:12More
07:13I see more activity
07:13In what's called my medial prefrontal cortex
07:15And certain parts of the brain there
07:17Than if I say
07:18Think about you
07:20I was more interested
07:21Because
07:22I thought that that finding
07:24Held the clue
07:25For maybe why we start thinking
07:27About our future selves
07:29As different other people
07:30In other words
07:31If I can distinguish between me
07:34And you in my brain
07:36Would I see a same sort of disconnect
07:38Between me and my future self
07:41In my brain
07:42So here's what we did
07:43We had our research participants
07:45Go into the scanner
07:46They see a little screen in front of them
07:47It's a really boring basic screen
07:49And they see a word at the top
07:50And the word represents a person
07:51They need to think about
07:52So they say
07:53Okay
07:53Think about current selves
07:55Or think about your future selves
07:57And what we saw
07:58Was that the brain activity
08:00From thinking about your future self
08:02Was more similar
08:04To the brain activity
08:05When people thought about
08:06Another person
08:07What are the implications of that?
08:10It suggests that
08:11On some deeper level
08:12We really do think about
08:13Our future selves
08:14As if they are other people
08:16When you take that perspective
08:18If our future self
08:19Is some other person
08:22Then the consequences
08:23Of my decisions right now
08:24Are going to befall
08:26Some other person

09:17The initial kind of shock

09:18Of where things could go

09:25Like how does

09:29And best friend

09:30And what would you do

09:32I think that's
09:32That's like the exact

09:35Because they're not the same

09:49It's actually about
09:50The emotions

09:54This is really a conversation
09:55About empathy
09:56This is a vision
09:57That's really hard to conjure up
09:58I can't picture my grandkids
09:59I can barely picture

10:01When they're older
10:02Because I'm so stuck
10:03On what they look like
10:04Right now
10:05But I have a really easy time
10:06Knowing how I want them to feel
10:08And knowing how I want
10:10Their kids to feel
10:11And on and on and on
10:12And so like you said
10:13That's the empathy
10:14Through line
10:15That's the sort of
10:15Empathy free way
10:16That we want to consider
10:19It's powerful
10:20To consider how we want
10:22Life to be
10:22For the generations
10:23Yet to be born
10:24And it forces us to think
10:25Beyond our own lifetime
10:29Today
10:29We live in a world
10:31In which we're
10:32Ill adapted
10:33To inhabit
10:34That wasn't the world
10:35The space and time
10:37The environment
10:38That we evolved in
10:39So a natural consequence
10:41Of that
10:41Is some of our
10:43Cognitive abilities
10:44Aren't necessarily tuned
10:45For the world
10:46That we've miraculously
10:49Managed to construct
10:50A world in which
10:51We have a vast amount
10:52Of information
10:52And an amazing ability
10:55To address future problems
10:58To invest in the future
10:59And that ability
11:00Is something
11:01That perhaps we don't use
11:03To the extent
11:04That we would like
11:06I like to think
11:07Of the future
11:08As a story
11:09It's really a set
11:10Of ideas
11:11That we all engage in
11:12And so
11:12In some sense
11:13The future is very malleable
11:14And in other ways
11:15It kind of doesn't exist
11:16And so it's open terrain
11:18For lots of new ideas
11:20And new ways
11:20Of being in the world
11:23So when most people
11:25Ask me

31:09With this in mind, they work to address the needs of today, but bearing in mind the impact these actions
31:15will have on those yet to be born.
31:17The results have been incredible.
31:19Like when they achieved together what traditional policymaking had failed to address for years, reaching an agreement to raise the
31:26community's water tax by 6% in order to address the town's decaying infrastructure.
31:31Today, more than 80% of the town's policies are created by citizens, who've become what they proudly refer to
31:37as future designers.
31:39I'm not even from your hobby, but I feel quick. It's a quick shift.
31:43That's right. See what you mean there?
31:45The work that you've designed takes people from being kind of an individual by themselves, but instead starts to make
31:53it like a chain.
31:53You see yourself as part of something that came, then you're here, but then you're connected to something that will
31:59be.
32:00That's right.
32:00So inside you, you're supposed to think about past people, past history, current situation, and our future.
32:11So change your mind.
32:14That means once you change your mind, you cannot go back to the previous stage.
32:21We struggle a lot with long-term thinking, and we tend to default to short-term thinking quite often.
32:26And so we've kind of set up multiple aspects of society to work in a short-term capacity.
32:33One of the first questions I like to ask is, who's benefiting from the system being this way?
32:37Our systems are not really broken. That's a bit of a misconception to say that.
32:41I think our systems are designed to work exactly the way they are. They're just not necessarily designed to work
32:46for you and I.
32:47Pollution is contamination of the environment that interferes with the processes of life.
32:52In seeking a better life on Earth, man in the 20th century has created a great technology at the expense
32:59of the environment essential to life.
33:02We like identifying ourselves as an intelligent species, but who made that measurement?
33:09We did. We are polluting our environment.
33:13We are altering the very ecosystem that we need to survive.
33:21We're creating a next wave of extinction across the tree of life without knowing what the long-term consequences of
33:28that might be.
33:29Maybe I could define intelligence in such a way so that there is no sign of it here on Earth.
33:35My biggest fear is that though we call ourselves intelligent, that we might not be wise enough to be the
33:47shepherds we need to be to assure the survival of generations yet to be born.
33:54Having anxiety about the future is not an unreasonable thing.
33:57It's actually very logical in some ways when you look at the data around what we're seeing in the world.
34:03But the important thing is that we have the opportunity to shape it and the hopeful part of that is
34:08that we actually have all the solutions we need to address the problems.
34:11What we don't have is the context for those solutions to take hold.
34:21I'm interested in exploring more of these new solutions and meeting the people who are creating them.
34:27That's led me here to New Haven, where a former fisherman turned ocean farmer named Bren Smith has become a
34:33catalyst for change in this community.
34:36So, Bren, I have no idea what a regenerative ocean farmer is.
34:40So, Bo, I want you to tell me what it is and how you got into it.
34:43Sure. I was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada, the edge of North America.
34:47All I wanted to be was a fisherman. That was my dream. I didn't want to be a politician, didn't
34:51want to be an astronaut.
34:52So I dropped out of high school when I was 14 and headed out to sea and fished the globe.
34:57Cod, crab, tuna, you name it, I fished it.
35:01As I moved through, the problem was I was fishing at the height of the industrial fishery, tearing up whole
35:08ecosystems, you know, the things that we know now.
35:10But when I was out in the Bering Sea, the cod stocks crashed in Newfoundland, Canada.
35:15And that was such a wake up call because I thought environmentalism was about birds and bees and bears.
35:22And to see 30,000 people thrown out of work, fishermen walking the streets like hungry ghosts, an economy built
35:29up and a culture built up over hundreds of years around a fishery.
35:33You realize like, oh, this isn't about the environment.
35:36This is about the economy. It's a kitchen table issue.
35:39This is that there will be no jobs on a dead ocean.
35:45Ron's path led him to ocean farming, where he now grows kelp and trains hundreds of other fishermen just like
35:51him to look at the ocean in a whole new way.
35:54In a time of growing concern around land-based agriculture, he sees untapped potential here at sea.
36:04I might come in again here. Let's see, Ron.
36:07So I've been farming this patch of water for almost 20 years.
36:10And what you're looking here at is 10 acres of kelp farm.
36:16So we have anchors on the side of the farm and then just rows of crop.
36:21And the kelp is sitting about, you know, six, seven feet below the surface.
36:27And our job as farmers is just to get the right amount of sunlight and nutrients in order to grow.
36:33So we care about the depth and what time of year we're planting, what temperature.
36:38So it's just simple as can be.
36:40You know, I wish it was more complicated. I'd seem smarter.
36:42But the idea is when you're working with the ocean, you need to be a willow, not an oak.
36:47And you need to be something that you can remove and rebuild really easily.

37:05So what we're going to do is you're just going to grab a clump, your hand here, and cut along.

37:20The power of kelp is that it has so many uses.
37:24Like, yes, we can eat it and we should eat it.
37:26And it's going to be the center of the plate because it's going to be affordable.
37:30We can make it delicious. There's so much creativity in the food sector.
37:33You can use it for biostimulants and fertilizer and land-based ag,
37:37for feed, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, bioplastics.
37:41It's a huge industry now.
37:43The idea is really to break down this seawall between land and sea farming.
37:48Nutrients that are in the water is too much of it, like phosphorus,
37:51nitrogen, carbon, all this sort of stuff.
37:52Let's collect it, use plants to do it, bring it back and use it for fertilizers,
37:56biostimulants, things like that.
37:58Because there are all these micronutrients that apple orchards need, flower farms,
38:04all this sort of stuff that it just is very accessible to the land-based plants.
38:10The old story in terms of humans and the sea is we go out there,
38:15we take what we want, we take as much as we want, as quickly as we want,
38:18and then we go back to land and we consume it.
38:21What's the new story?
38:23I think it's a great question.
38:25Like, we do need a story for the future, right?
38:27And the biggest thing, and I think this gets missed in the climate discussion a lot,
38:32is that there needs to be a cultural transition.
38:34And you need to think about, like, what motivates people?
38:37What fills their soul and gets them up in the morning?
38:40This isn't necessarily about money.
38:41And that moment when I was a kid and, like, wanted to be a fisherman
38:45because they had self-directed lives and the pride of feeding their communities,
38:50that's what we need to tap into.
38:52That's what motivates folks.
38:53And as a kelp farmer, yeah, I've had to say goodbye to rogue waves and chasing fish,
38:57but what I can embrace, I own my own boat, I succeed and fail on my own terms,
39:01I got to be like an engineer, a scientist, a farmer, all this sort of stuff at once,
39:05and I get to feed the folks around me.
39:07These are soul-filling jobs, and that's the discussion we have with fishermen.
39:11Like, yes, we all have to say goodbye to some things,
39:13but do we get the core of what makes us wake up every morning?
39:17And that's how you build an army of innovation in a day, a blue-collar innovation,
39:21and quite honestly, you get the politics right.
39:23Like, if you can tap into that, where people see themselves as part of the solution,
39:29then the level of innovation and knowledge networks and sharing and stuff,
39:33I think that's where we transition to a better future
39:35because you just want millions of minds trying to figure this out,
39:39but you've got to tap into the soul to do that.
39:45Sometimes it can feel like what we do doesn't really amount to anything
39:48or doesn't add to the bigger picture that is unfolding
39:51or that we don't have the ability to enact change in the real world.
39:55But the fact is that every little action does add up.
39:58The desire to talk about these wonderful things in the future that like,
40:01oh, we'll have sustainability, we'll have equity, we'll have justice,
40:04we'll have all of these things.
40:05What we need to do is borrow those ideas from the future
40:08and think about, like, how we're going to implement them today.
40:11If you want a tree to grow 20 years from now,
40:14you have to plant a physical seed to get that tree.
40:16What sort of future do you want?
40:18And what's the action you can take right now to enable that future to become a reality?
40:26This idea of planting seeds right now for better futures
40:30is an invitation to all of us, no matter where we are.
40:33Here in the jungles of Northeast India, I came to meet someone who is doing just that.
40:38Leading a conservation effort to challenge how his community thinks
40:42about the futures they are building.
40:45My name is Mourning Sir Khong Thao,
40:46and I run my own foundation called the Living Grid Foundation.
40:49We basically work for conservation, you know, restoring and rebuilding this
40:55traditional architecture of the Kassian giant community in Meghalaya, Northeast India.
40:59For years, I've read about these extraordinary, natural-grown bridges,
41:04where ficus tree roots are trained to grow into living crossings,
41:07lasting for hundreds of years, connecting the villages throughout the jungle.
41:12Mourning Star leads the effort to preserve these bridges,
41:15and with them, an ancient way of thinking about modern progress and the past.
41:19The root bridges are like a kind of a root structure built by the ancestors of the war,
41:26Khasi, the tribe of Meghalaya.
41:29The building of root bridges is like a thousand years old traditional knowledge.
41:32It all started when they have started to build these bamboo bridges and wooden bridges,
41:37but they feel that these bamboo and wooden bridges wouldn't last long.
41:42And they find the idea that the roots of this ficus tree are much more stronger than this.
41:47They intertwine with the root of this tree,
41:49and that's how they come up with the idea of what this is called, a root bridge.
41:53So give me some facts about the root bridges.
41:55How many of them are there? What are the longest ones? What are the highest ones?
41:59In Meghalaya, total, we have about more than 100 bridges.
42:03So we will say like more than 120, 130 bridges in Meghalaya.
42:08The world's longest known root bridge is in my village.
42:11The length is like 175 feet, like that.
42:15And also we have the highest known, which is like 90 feet down.
42:18Wow.
42:19And we are planning now to build like a triple-decker.
42:22There are others who are coming in and saying,
42:24that's nice, but we can make a bridge with concrete.
42:28What's the threat to you, your way of life?
42:32And really your way of thinking, when these bridges kind of go up in your community.
42:39It's a very sad thing to say,
42:41that root bridges have been replaced by a concrete bridge.
42:46Through the lack of imagination, lack of thinking,
42:50you know, lack of knowledge about development.
42:55How are you?
42:56Sit down, please, please sit down. Yes, please sit down.
43:00In addition to his work on the bridges, Morningstar travels to speak with students in schools around the region,
43:07encouraging them to find and protect nature-based solutions to the problems facing the communities here today and in the
43:13years to come.
43:16There's so much we can learn from these traditions.
43:19As around the world, people are beginning to rediscover that natural solutions can have profound results.
43:25There are projects underway around New York City to restore oyster reefs that offset erosion along the shorelines.
43:31And in cities across China, there's work being done to enable mangroves to serve as natural seawalls, preventing flooding around
43:39major cities.
43:40This is not a quick fix.
43:42And the people who start these projects, these root bridges, know they are doing something that is not just for
43:49them,
43:49but it's going to be for their kids and even hundreds of years out.
43:52So we're in many ways saying to both of our communities, we're going to be in this together for a
43:57while.
43:57It shows the metaphor of the unity between communities.
44:02And whoever walks on it, they will feel and enjoy that unity of our ancestors.
44:08We get this bridge to walk now.
44:10If you think for a short term, then you'll just do easy things.
44:16But when you think about long term, you have the passion, you have the vision, you're well informed.
44:25When we started this, I was thinking that so many of the conversations would somehow revolve around technology.
44:35And yet, as I talk about what people are working on, what do they want to see happen in futures,
44:43they talk about being human again.
44:45And what's most surprising to me is a desire to kind of start making some decisions about what do we
44:53want to leave behind?
44:54And what do we want to start creating more of that we've lost?
45:03What right now gives you hope?
45:06This is a wonderful question because it's so easy.
45:10It's so easy to only see doom and gloom out there.
45:14Even if we consider the doom and gloom, time still marches on.
45:20There's no stopping the progress of time.
45:23So it gives me hope to consider how we've done things in the past to make the present better,
45:28and what we might be able to do now to make the future better as well.
45:30We are small in time and in space, participating in a great unfolding of cosmic events,
45:38a reminder that civilization is precious.
45:41Life is precious.
45:45We should do everything we can to preserve it in this one moment we have to experience the glory of
45:56this universe.
46:00Nature gives me hope.
46:02Because when you look at the things happening in the world,
46:06the legislative, the war, the fighting, the clash, the rivalry, the protests.
46:12It's about, you know, about human beings.
46:15So, for me, the most important thing about nature gives me hope.
46:20Because the way you see nature, you know, it's a good thing to learn from nature.
46:26So, just go to nature and sit there.
46:28See the animals, see the ants, see the birds, see the beasts.
46:31Just learn from them and then come back.
46:33Hmm.
46:33It will change your life.
46:36You know, we can build something from the bottom up that we're proud of,
46:39that's beautiful, that we can, like, point to this moment,
46:42be like, yeah, we built something to hand to you.
46:45We started this for you, now you continue it.
46:49Ten centuries later, when we opened up a kind of a history book,
46:55imagine and are we the people who destroyed our entire earth?
47:01That's the reason why, see, we are short of food.
47:04We are short of energy.
47:07We don't want to be that kind of ancestors, right?
47:10Mm-hmm.
47:11Please think about investing our future.
47:15That's my message.
47:18For the first time in human history, we are now grappling with a set of issues,
47:22a set of decisions that we have to make that will have long-term consequences
47:28for Homo sapiens, for our species and for this planet.
47:31If we want to think about where we might be able to go tomorrow,
47:34what could happen and what do we want to see happen,
47:36it's important for us to be able to kind of look back
47:39and see ourselves as part of something much larger.
47:42If we really want to move forward, we have to be curious about
47:45what those different forwards and those futures could look like.
