00:00I've ran out of swipes. I've completed Tinder.
00:03In the heart of Britain's most romantic city...
00:07Hello!
00:08Fred and his team...
00:09This is Captain Fur Potato.
00:12...are matching hopeful singletons...
00:14We're getting married, Merlin.
00:15...in a place where love is always on the menu.
00:19I've got a bit in your finger. You didn't go that far down the street.
00:24These daters...
00:25You probably think I'm having a poo or something.
00:27...are searching...
00:30...for the one.
00:32Did you chase me around the bedroom?
00:34Absolutely.
00:34Here you go.
00:35I'm in.
00:36For some, stepping into the unknown...
00:40...can lead to surprising sparks.
00:43I work in the adult industry.
00:45Do you have an office for that?
00:46I have a dungeon.
00:48But finding a connection...
00:50A love story is about to begin.
00:52Shut up!
00:53...isn't always easy.
00:55Please tell me you actually last longer than three minutes.
01:00Help me!
01:03In the end...
01:04Hi!
01:04...it comes down to one...
01:08...big...
01:09...question.
01:10Would you guys like to see each other again?
01:12This isn't a little crisp, is it?
01:14This is the First Dates restaurant.
01:29Hello!
01:31How are you?
01:32How are you?
01:32How are you?
01:46...is definitely a bit of me.
01:48My type?
01:50Oh...
01:51Do you want the fantasy version or the real version?
01:54What's your type?
01:55My type?
01:56Brunette.
01:57Slightly shorter than me.
01:59Boxing.
02:00Oh.
02:01What does boxing mean?
02:03Look it up.
02:04Hi!
02:07Come on, son.
02:10All good.
02:11Ha!
02:12Bosh.
02:14British Army Sergeant Poole is on a special mission to find love.
02:19How many medals have you actually won?
02:22What?
02:22We don't win them.
02:23No, we don't win them.
02:24It's not like the Eggerspoon race.
02:29A lot of craft went into them.
02:31It's the British Army, don't just hand them out.
02:33So this one here is Northern Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan.
02:36I went there like twice.
02:38You get deployed here, there and everywhere, you know.
02:41I think that can then put strain on relationship.
02:45How are you?
02:46Very good.
02:47You're a gentle giant.
02:48Oh, you're even better looking in real life.
02:50Thank you very much.
02:52Have you been on holiday?
02:53I'm in the British Army.
02:55Out in Gibraltar.
02:57And a little bit of a Costa del Sunbed.
02:59Oh, nice.
03:00So what are you looking for?
03:01To just have that sort of connection, a bit of a spark, you know?
03:04People don't know what they want.
03:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:05When they think they do, when they are faced with what they want,
03:08it's like they pedal back.
03:09They're not sure anymore.
03:10I feel like a lot of women nowadays,
03:12they sort of say they want like a man's man,
03:14but they don't really want to.
03:15They want someone they can sort of boss about, you know.
03:18I'm going to be a bit cheeky here and get two drinks.
03:20Can I get a miretti and can I get a glass of Prosecco?
03:22And a glass of Prosecco.
03:23Yeah, I do these little Prosecco chances.
03:25Double parking.
03:25Double parking.
03:27So what's your dream girl?
03:28That's the million dollar question.
03:30Someone who's sort of like down to earth, like,
03:33don't take themselves, like, too seriously.
03:36Someone who's not too eye maintenance.
03:43Ex-girl band member Natalie wants more than just another groupie.
03:47At 17 years old, I was in a group called Times Four.
03:52That's me.
03:54We were on tour with people like Blue, Liberty X, Atomic Kitten.
03:59I was so thin.
04:00I had abs.
04:07Oh la la.
04:09You are taking your time to make your entrance, aren't you?
04:12Yeah.
04:12You are milking it.
04:13Trying my best.
04:14You are so beautiful.
04:15To be honest, try not to fall over, Fred.
04:17The best feeling I think you can have is when you walk into a room
04:21and someone's face lights up.
04:23You know, I want to have that effect on somebody
04:25and I want them to do that for me as well.
04:27So, your date is at the bar.
04:29Oh.
04:29If you look past my shoulder here.
04:30Okay.
04:31He looks like a viking.
04:33He's just missing an axe.
04:35The thing that I find most sexy is somebody that's tall.
04:39I definitely like to see some beautiful muscles.
04:44I'm really loving Aaron Pierre, who's like Mufasa in The Lion King.
04:50He's way too young for me, but an older version of him would be fabulous.
04:54So, yes please, thank you.
04:58Hello, you all right?
04:59How are you going?
04:59Hello there.
05:00You all right?
05:01How are you?
05:01Nice to meet you.
05:02You all right?
05:03Lovely, you're lovely.
05:04Natalie, Paul.
05:04How's it going?
05:05Hi, Paul.
05:07How are you feeling?
05:09It's quite nerve-wracking, isn't it?
05:10Yeah, yeah, definitely.
05:12What do you do?
05:13I'm in the British Army.
05:14It's good.
05:15I'd say it's probably the best job in the world, but I'm probably a bit biased.
05:19So, does that mean that you're away quite a bit?
05:21Uh, I've duly got away.
05:26But like, it's not for like long, long periods, you know?
05:33I bet you've got some stories.
05:35The acts, it's almost like fast food.
05:38Mmm.
05:39Right?
05:40It's like people flip through, and they flip through, and they flip through, and they want...
05:43you have to fit into the exact box.
05:47Yeah.
05:48And I think there's a part where you have to be like, you know what?
05:49You have to figure out that sometimes the person that you have envisioned in your mind
05:54is probably not the person you're going to wind up with.
05:56God, yeah.
05:57Right.
05:58Yeah.
06:04That's a real animal, isn't it?
06:06This is Captain Fur Potato, or Furpy, who is my hearing dog.
06:12Furpy is here with Kerry, a forensic psychologist hoping to find some puppy love.
06:18I've spent 30 years sat in prison cells, eye to eye, with really serious offenders, murderers, serial killers.
06:27But going into the first date restaurant, that is something that is completely out of my comfort zone.
06:35Oh, my God, he is delicious. How old is he?
06:39He's four now.
06:40He's a Pekingese, he's a rescue dog, so he's all the way from Belarus.
06:45So I'm guessing that he barks in a Russian accent.
06:49They say find a man that looks at you in the same way that your dog looks at you.
06:53But Furpy just stares at me with his tongue hanging out, so I don't think that's going to work.
06:59What's happening with you and dating?
07:02Nothing really, it's tumbleweed.
07:04Tumbleweed?
07:05Tumbleweed.
07:05Oh, come off it.
07:07Well, I am a career girl, but also, the last five years, I lost my hearing.
07:14I think it's taken me five years to adapt to it.
07:18So you can lip read?
07:19I lip read, yeah, but it's always slightly dodgy.
07:24This will certainly be the first date since I've been a deaf person.
07:27I read that 75% of users of a dating app would swipe left if the person on the profile
07:34was deaf.
07:35So I've got to admit that I do feel anxious about it.
07:40So tell me, what kind of gentleman are you hoping to meet today?
07:44Some hunky, yet down-to-earth man who is very comfortable in his masculinity.
07:52I always thought that at this stage in my life I would be married.
07:56It would be nice to have holidays with somebody or to go dog walking with somebody.
08:03He's got to love animals and it would be wonderful if he wants to leave the world in a better
08:07state than he found it.
08:12Kerry's date is PC Dan. He's great at finding the bad guys. He just can't seem to find love.
08:22I'm a response officer, which means 24-7 policing, going to 999 calls every day.
08:30You know, when I field the application form in the age of 20 years old, I wanted to fight crime.
08:34I wanted to run after people. I wanted to climb fences and get burglars.
08:38I'm like a dinosaur on the front line now.
08:40But the adrenaline you get when you blew light into jobs is still there.
08:44You're walking like a strong man. Are you a strong man? How are you then?
08:48I think so. I've got a strong beard.
08:50There was two sides of me.
08:52Literally, I walked through the door after work and it is uniform straight off.
08:57Comfizant, cup of tea, biscuits, massive chocolate fan.
09:01Have you been doing much dating recently?
09:03Yeah, I've been quite a lot of online dating.
09:06I would say I've probably been on over a hundred dates in the last six years.
09:11I've been catfished a few times, ghosted a few times.
09:14And it's very draining.
09:17And where are you in your life now? What are you looking for?
09:19I'm looking for a partner. A full-life partner, yeah.
09:22I wonder how someone back can be a best mate.
09:26Hello. Hi. Pleased to meet you.
09:28Pleased to meet you. Thank you. Kerry.
09:30Nice to meet you. Hi. How are you?
09:32Not too bad. So you've got a dog.
09:34I have got a dog, yes. Wow. What's this one's name?
09:36This one's name is Furpy. And what's your name?
09:39My name's Dan. Hi, Dan.
09:41So, how can you put your dog along then?
09:45I brought my dog along because I think that if you don't like my dog, then...
09:51Part of the package. He's like a teddy bear.
09:54He is like a teddy bear, yes. I'm loving it.
09:56Do you like dogs?
09:59Yeah, I do. Yeah, have you got one?
10:00I haven't. I haven't. I've got kids instead.
10:03Right, OK. They're more expensive and you can't leave them in the back garden, can you?
10:07Yeah, absolutely, yeah. Well, pleased to meet you.
10:10Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you too.
10:20So, fun facts about me, definitely. Years ago, when I was fresh and young...
10:27Yeah, you are fresh and young still.
10:29Much younger. I used to be in a girl band.
10:33Did you?
10:34Yeah, when I was like 17. Yeah.
10:36Signed to a record label. Yeah.
10:38And we were off touring around the world. Was it?
10:41Yeah. Just did that for a few years. Loved it.
10:44My children know that I was in a band and have seen the videos,
10:48but I feel a part of them still doesn't believe it's actually me and it's true.
10:53I met my husband when I was 16.
10:56He went through all my girl band days and probably kept me quite sane.
11:02He was amazing, but sometimes just things don't work out.
11:06I just wasn't happy and I chose to be honest and tell him that.
11:11It was one of the hardest decisions and one of the hardest conversations
11:16that I've ever had to have with anyone in my whole life.
11:21Now with my kids, I'm always saying to them, you know,
11:24your relationship with your dad's really important
11:26and I always want you to have that.
11:29I think that's why I'm so balanced and happy to this day,
11:33because I made the right decision for me.
11:37I'd love to meet somebody and share my world with them.
11:40Can you see?
11:41Well, I was in a girl band. I hope I could see you, actually.
11:45Was it old?
11:46Oh, correct.
11:47I just mined.
11:49How old are you if you don't mind me asking?
11:51How old do you think I am?
11:52I think that you're younger than I am.
11:54OK.
11:55Mid-40s.
11:57Bang on.
11:5745.
11:59What about without the beard?
12:00I'll probably look a bit younger then.
12:01Well, no, I mean, I like the beard.
12:04I think these days it's quite nice to have a beard.
12:06It keeps me nice and warm.
12:07I know, it seems to be...
12:08Oh, does it?
12:09OK.
12:09Yeah, I feel the same about my leg hair.
12:13That's a joke, by the way.
12:15OK.
12:27So, his name's Paul.
12:30He's in the army.
12:33Why is he a total geezer?
12:35He's like, yeah, you're right.
12:38Not my normal type, guys.
12:40I have to say, I did not get Aaron Pierre.
12:44Erm...
12:45I might be Aaron Pierre.
12:47No.
12:50Er...
12:56There's your water.
12:57How are we doing with the menu?
12:58Yeah, we're ready now.
12:59Yeah, me too.
13:00Can I have the gambas pil-pil, please?
13:03Yes, you can.
13:04And could I be awkward and say,
13:06is there anything that the chef could throw together for Furpy?
13:13I will find out.
13:15I'll just have the Korean fried chicken, please.
13:18Got it.
13:18That's it, thank you.
13:19OK, thank you.
13:20Thanks so much.
13:23Well, here we are.
13:25I know.
13:26Here's to a first date.
13:29When was the last date you went on?
13:31I've not been on a date for the last...
13:34Certainly not for the last five years.
13:37Yeah.
13:38So, I am the first date you've had within five years?
13:40Yeah, I know.
13:42Oh, that's amazing.
13:43I've just had other priorities, if I'm honest,
13:47and other things that I've been trying to deal with.
13:51Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
13:56Stranded from the atte...
13:59Something happening?
14:01Someone's singing.
14:03Oh, right, OK.
14:04Right, opera's singing.
14:05I couldn't hear anything.
14:08I don't know whether you've noticed.
14:11I'm deaf.
14:14So...
14:15Are you?
14:15Yeah, I'm completely deaf.
14:17What, so you just lip-read?
14:19I'm lip-reading, yeah.
14:20Wow, that's incredible. Yeah.
14:24So are you partially deaf?
14:26No, I'm pretty much completely deaf.
14:28Wow, why did it happen?
14:30I had what I thought was flu,
14:32and within a few weeks I couldn't hear anything.
14:35It was horrendous.
14:38It was a shock.
14:40Bang.
14:41I've got to be honest, I just thought, well,
14:45nobody's going to want to date me.
14:49I'm somehow less...attractive.
14:53Well, I wouldn't have been able to tell at all
14:56that you're deaf. Yeah. That's incredible.
14:59Yeah, that's good to know, cos a lot of people, I think,
15:01don't bother to make the effort,
15:03and I don't think they realise that actually
15:05it's not as hard as they think.
15:06Well, that's right, yeah.
15:08You're proof of that.
15:10The hardest part of losing my hearing
15:12was that I was always a very sociable person,
15:16and so, you know, I would be in restaurants,
15:19I would be in bars, and those environments now
15:22are just, oh, you know, help.
15:24But Furpy, who's my hearing support dog,
15:27he's brilliant for meeting people,
15:29and when people ask me questions about him,
15:33I can lip-read those questions easily,
15:36and I can tune in to them.
15:38Fair play to you, I think you've been through a lot.
15:40Yeah, sometimes at the end of a hard day,
15:42you need a cuddle, don't you?
15:43Yeah, yeah, you do.
15:45So...can definitely recommend dogs for that, though.
15:48Yeah.
15:49Yeah, warm, furry, cosy.
15:52Yeah.
15:53Yeah.
15:53Exactly.
15:58So, have you got any children or anything?
16:01Yeah, I've got a daughter.
16:02Yeah.
16:03Erm, she's, like, 14.
16:05OK.
16:06But she don't live, like, anywhere near me.
16:08Oh, OK.
16:09So it's like...
16:11When I was in Afghan the first time,
16:13I missed my daughter's birth like I went now,
16:15like I couldn't come back.
16:17I see.
16:19Yeah, that must be tough.
16:21How was your partner at the time about that?
16:25I think she really struggled with it.
16:26Really struggled with it, you know?
16:29My dad was in the army as well, you know?
16:31So, erm, he was a big guy.
16:32A little bit taller than me, to be fair.
16:33He was, like, six foot six, you know?
16:35Oh, wow.
16:35So it's like, erm...
16:38Yeah.
16:41Erm...
16:43My dad died when I was, like, 12.
16:45So it, like, it dug me in a little bit.
16:49It didn't hit me till, like, later on in life, you know?
16:51I just sort of, like, blocked it out.
16:54I think it does eat away at you.
16:56And I think you've just got that, like, in-built thing
16:58that you don't, like, showing weakness, if that makes sense,
17:00you know?
17:01Like, even though it's still...
17:02It's still a thing, you know?
17:04But...
17:08Like, if this was a couple of years ago...
17:10You wouldn't have been able to do it.
17:11I wouldn't have even spoke about it.
17:12I think, like, when you don't talk about it,
17:14it just eats away a little bit
17:16and then you just sort of...
17:17You don't deal with it.
17:19Yeah, he just might weld a little bit, you know?
17:21So it's like, erm...
17:23Yeah, my dad was like my hero, really.
17:26Just mad, obviously.
17:27I ain't seen him, like, all that time.
17:28I mean, just go through life.
17:30You just sort of...
17:30Think, oh, I wish I had my dad there,
17:32do you know what I mean?
17:34Yeah, it is hard, because I think to myself,
17:36like, he's been...
17:36Gone a while.
17:371995.
17:39Yeah, and he's...
17:40Yeah.
17:41Yeah, just, er...
17:42He does.
17:42Yeah.
17:43That sounds so tough.
17:45So tough.
17:46That is huge.
17:47That is completely life-changing.
17:49Yeah.
17:49Losing a parent.
17:50Particularly as a male.
17:52Yeah.
17:52Your father is somebody that you need, isn't it?
17:54Yeah, that's it.
17:54Do you have any siblings?
17:55No.
17:56Okay, so it's just you.
17:57Yeah.
17:58Mmm.
18:13So...
18:14He's like a real geezer.
18:16Uh-huh.
18:17That wouldn't really be my normal type.
18:18You've got to be open.
18:19Yeah.
18:19And you've got to see where life takes you.
18:21If you were just sticking to one type, you're never going to be successful.
18:24It's never going to work.
18:24100%.
18:25And clearly that's not been working for me.
18:27Right.
18:27So...
18:27Time to change the approach.
18:28Change the approach.
18:34I think maybe if I got married, it would just go and get married on a beach somewhere.
18:41Mmm.
18:42Just go and do it.
18:43That would be lovely.
18:44And what were your weddings like?
18:45Both weddings were the full white wedding.
18:48Really?
18:49The full package?
18:50Yeah.
18:50The full deal?
18:51Yeah.
18:51How long have you been single for?
18:53So I got divorced about six and a half years ago.
18:56So I've got four daughters.
18:57Four?
18:58Four daughters.
18:59Wow.
18:59Okay.
19:00I think it's really important to reflect when you have a breakdown of a marriage.
19:05I think when we were going through hard times with young children, I am disappointed I didn't try harder.
19:11Yeah, two marriages, two divorces, two daughters with each wife.
19:15So the two younger girls, I have half the time.
19:19Yeah.
19:20I suppose not having a partner has made me spend even more time with them.
19:24I've got so much love to give. I'd love to find that person.
19:27I think you get to that age as well.
19:29I don't know whether you got to this age where you...
19:31I'm probably past that age, whatever that age is.
19:34What, you're 51?
19:35I'm 51, so I'm a good few years older than you.
19:37I'm 46, so...
19:40Yeah.
19:40No, you'd be a toy boy, wouldn't you?
19:42Yeah, you could be my cougar.
19:44Do you reckon?
19:45Yeah, what do you reckon?
19:45Would it work?
19:47Er...
19:47I've never really thought of myself as a cougar, to be honest.
19:55So, these...
19:56You have to try his style, right?
19:57Oh, OK.
19:58So we have a shot of lager...
20:00OK.
20:01Here we go.
20:02...followed by a shot of Prosecco.
20:04Right, right.
20:05Chin chin.
20:08Not bad.
20:09Cheers.
20:16First time for everything.
20:18Yeah, that's it, yeah.
20:19Wasn't terrible.
20:20Just be falling out on the way out.
20:22Make sure you're there to hold me up.
20:24Don't expect me to hold your handbag, though.
20:26I can't hold a handbag.
20:28No.
20:28I can't.
20:29I just can't do it.
20:30Would you hold my bags on holiday?
20:33Depends.
20:33Your suitcase.
20:34No, 100% your suitcase.
20:36But if your beach bag looks too feminine, I can't hold it.
20:40No.
20:41Or if you stacked it, then yeah, I'd help you up and I'd hold it for about four seconds.
20:45Right, I'll give it back to you.
20:46So it's like...
20:47Right, OK, perfect.
20:48No, because there's rules to this.
20:50Yeah, there is rules.
20:51There is rules.
20:54Do you ever accidentally step on people's handbags?
20:57You know, when they're at the table?
20:59What, for a hobby or...?
21:00No, because I'm so cripplingly self-aware that I'm like...
21:03I'm not.
21:04I always step on them.
21:10Hi.
21:1346-year-old tea merchant Eric has swapped his native Texas for bath.
21:18Now he's hoping to turn over a new leaf in his dating game.
21:23I've got a fairly dry sense of humor.
21:25A bit of sarcasm.
21:27I hear the word sassy a lot.
21:30This is so far outside of my comfort zone.
21:34I don't know if I can do this.
21:37Absolute nervousness.
21:39I will go in a hot mess because I don't even know if I know what I'm like on a
21:43date.
21:43I mean, it has been over 15 years.
21:46How are you?
21:47You look happy to be here.
21:49It's nice to see.
21:49I'm happy to be here.
21:50How are you?
21:51I could see your smile from all the way down there.
21:53Where are you from?
21:53You're American, right?
21:54Oh, yeah.
21:55Texas.
21:55Texas?
21:56Oh, I love Texas.
21:57You ready for your date?
21:58I am ready for my date, yes.
21:59All right, man.
21:59Do you want me to take your coat?
22:00Yes, please.
22:01Okay.
22:03Take a seat, man.
22:04All right.
22:04Enjoy your date.
22:07Hello, man.
22:07Hello there.
22:08How are you?
22:09I'm well.
22:09How are you?
22:10What can I get you?
22:11Red wine.
22:12Red wine?
22:12Red, red wine.
22:13Malbec or Cabernet?
22:14Ooh, let's go Cab.
22:15Cab.
22:15Yeah, why not?
22:16Tell me, right, you're here obviously for a date.
22:18What's your type?
22:20My type is just someone that doesn't let me just settle for being me.
22:24And so I need that little bit of a debate, a little bit of a pushback.
22:27You know, don't just get me, by the way.
22:29Some pokey.
22:30Yeah, that's it.
22:30I need someone who can understand the very fine line between not giving me my way, but
22:38also not depriving me of what I want too much.
22:41And so I need someone that can just keep up with my bad personality.
22:46Hello.
22:49Hoping to breathe new life into his dating game is fertility expert, Steven.
22:54So I've been single for five years now.
22:57Forty in gay years is basically dead.
22:59You are not even put back onto the shelf.
23:02You're just dead.
23:04I do like to be mentally challenged.
23:06For someone that you can have a lot of banter with, a lot of laughs, no long delayed silences.
23:14Hello.
23:15Hello, how are you?
23:16How are you?
23:16Nice to meet you.
23:17Steven, lovely to meet you.
23:18Nice to meet you too.
23:19Great.
23:20Are you ready for your date?
23:21Yeah, let's do this.
23:22You know he's at the bar.
23:23Is he?
23:24Yeah, if you look to your right, to the bar there, you can see.
23:27Okay, not bad.
23:28Yeah?
23:28Not bad?
23:28You like what you see?
23:30Don't worry.
23:31Shall I take you through?
23:31Of course.
23:35Have fun guys.
23:36Hi.
23:37Hi, yeah.
23:37Nice to meet you.
23:38Hi there.
23:38Nice to meet you.
23:39Eric.
23:39Nice to meet you.
23:40Nice to meet you.
23:42Nice place.
23:42It is a nice place.
23:44Yeah.
23:46Hello.
23:46Sorry to interrupt.
23:47Can I get you a drink?
23:47Uh, gin tonic please.
23:49Can you see?
23:49Coming up.
23:51Classic.
23:52I know.
23:53Five o'clock someplace.
23:54I'm not knocking.
24:00Thank you guys.
24:01If it's okay, we'll just leave the bill in the middle.
24:02Okay, thank you.
24:04A little marshmallow on the top for you guys.
24:05Wow.
24:08She seems very genuine and compassionate.
24:11I don't really talk about things, you know.
24:14I just sort of, like, give them to myself, really.
24:16If she wasn't that genuine, I probably wouldn't have, like, spoke about certain things.
24:21Punching a couple more drinks than Donna Kebab ting, innit?
24:23Do you know what I mean?
24:26Right, what's this bill say?
24:27Right, what should we do?
24:28How much?
24:29No, joking.
24:30I'll do it.
24:30It's fine.
24:31Fabulous, thank you so much.
24:33No, it's fine.
24:33It's fine.
24:37Would you like to see each other again?
24:40I'd probably say yes.
24:42I'd probably say again, yeah.
24:44Absolutely agree.
24:46Why not?
24:47Why not?
24:48Where are we?
24:49Yeah.
24:50Donna Kebab ting.
24:51She loves Donna Kebab ting.
24:53True gentleman.
24:54Go ahead.
24:55We knew that from the start.
24:56Yeah, exactly.
24:57That was sad.
24:59You're really open, really honest, particularly about your past and things that have happened.
25:05That's really attractive to me.
25:06You're a right geezer.
25:08So, looking forward to getting to know you a little bit more.
25:12That's really nice, you know.
25:15That's how you come across like a good person, yeah.
25:18That's all right, it's all right.
25:20Ciao, see you later.
25:21Thanks a lot.
25:21Bye.
25:22I've never dated anybody in the army before.
25:26I'm really looking forward to seeing the uniform.
25:29That's all I can say about that, really.
25:31What?
25:32Enjoy your drinks and your kebab, yeah?
25:35Thank you so much.
25:36Nice to meet you guys.
25:40No, he's not having that.
25:41Oh, there you go.
25:42Just in time.
25:43Oh, there we go.
25:44He was having a little bit of a tabby there.
25:46Are you ready for your dinner?
25:47There you go.
25:48There's your napkin.
25:49Oh, wow.
25:49That looks amazing.
25:50There you go.
25:54God.
25:54That's him.
25:57He doesn't like it.
26:01All right.
26:02Are we ready?
26:03Are we ready?
26:04Are you ready?
26:04You go first.
26:07I'm going to have the vegan hanging kebab.
26:10Oh, do I need to specify that I want the properly seasoned fries?
26:16If I find them to not be properly seasoned, they will be worse.
26:20My red wine does seem precariously low.
26:24Okay, you can't have that.
26:25I'll be right back.
26:25All right.
26:27Perfect.
26:27You're welcome.
26:29Being single is fine.
26:31It's not the same as coming back and having someone else there.
26:34If you've had an absolute shit day, then just hold me for a second.
26:38Yeah.
26:38Not too many seconds because then you get off me.
26:42Are you not a hugger?
26:43Like, it's good and cute, but it has a finite time span.
26:49And then three minutes later, Big Spoon's arm is asleep.
26:52I'm like, oh, it doesn't, just like, ugh, it doesn't work.
26:57Please tell me you actually last longer than three minutes.
27:11Juicable, juicable.
27:14A reese jam served with garlic oil.
27:23Maybe she's left.
27:26Maybe you stuck with me.
27:28What do you reckon?
27:31You have got a lovely soft coat.
27:35Here she is.
27:37Oh, thank you.
27:38Yeah.
27:38It looks quite at home with you.
27:40We've had a little chat.
27:41Have you?
27:41We have.
27:42What did you say?
27:44Oh, that would be telling.
27:45Oh, really?
27:46It's a secret.
27:47Boys chat.
27:48Okay, boys talk.
27:49Boys talk.
27:50Okay.
27:57So what's the gay scene like down here, then?
28:00Just you, is it?
28:01This is it.
28:02Yeah.
28:02This is it.
28:03I mean, I don't really go out at all.
28:05So, how'd you get to meet people, then?
28:07I mean, I just, I haven't really done anything.
28:09Okay.
28:09Um, so, um, moved here with my partner.
28:13Um, about seven weeks after we arrived, he passed away.
28:19Um, we were together for 12 years.
28:22Um, it was all quite sudden.
28:27We met on Match.com.
28:29I wrote a very snarky little profile, and, and he thought it was fun.
28:34We came to Bath in September of 2020.
28:38For us, this was sort of a path of, right, okay, we're gonna do something different.
28:42We're gonna leave the States.
28:43Things were great.
28:45And, um, it was November 11th.
28:48Uh, it was Remembrance Day.
28:49And he had a thoracic aneurysm.
28:52And, uh, well, I mean, he passed away in my arms.
28:57I'm single because...
28:59Sorry.
29:00I haven't yet figured out how to respond when people say, oh, I'm sorry.
29:06I was single, he wasn't alone.
29:08But then at the same time, it's an image that never leaves you.
29:12And it's, it's a gut punch.
29:15That was the last picture we took together, here in Bath.
29:19It's life, I guess, you know?
29:22My family was not, we were not the sort of people that shared emotions.
29:25Okay.
29:27My partner, he was very affectionate.
29:30I think that people sometimes think I'm a little cold.
29:35But in fact, I don't mean to be.
29:38I'm a little bit introverted.
29:40But Jason got me.
29:42And he was absolutely my biggest supporter.
29:46I miss love.
29:47I want it.
29:49I think it's time to rip the plaster off.
29:52It's time to get back to the idea of letting someone else come back in.
29:57And so that's it.
29:58I'm sort of in a mode of like...
30:00Where do I want to go from?
30:02Yeah, it's about just, it really is about just starting again.
30:06Which is absolutely terrifying.
30:15I've not really struggled to understand what you've said.
30:18Not at all.
30:19I've not been having a completely different conversation, have I?
30:21No.
30:21Yeah, you've been fantastic.
30:26So, would you like to see each other again?
30:30You first.
30:32I think you're an absolute gentleman.
30:33Thanks.
30:34I don't feel that we've got a romantic spark though.
30:38I agree.
30:38Yeah.
30:39That's what I feel.
30:40Yeah, absolutely.
30:41I'm quite happy to split the bill.
30:43No, not at all.
30:44Come on.
30:44I'll get it.
30:46Definitely my treat.
30:47It was a really good way for me to start dating again, so thank you for that.
30:54Come on then, dog.
30:55I think it was lovely to meet you as well, because you're clearly a strong, driven person.
31:01And that shines through with your positive energy.
31:04And how was your first date with a dog?
31:06It was different, but it was fine.
31:09He didn't eat the food that the restaurant went and got for him.
31:12He didn't, no.
31:13I think that's because it was actual dog food.
31:15Oh, was it?
31:15Yeah.
31:16He doesn't eat dog food.
31:17He likes human food.
31:19Oh.
31:19Yeah.
31:19Talk about a diva dog.
31:27What's the press-up count now?
31:28Remember that?
31:29Yeah, still the same.
31:29300.
31:30And one.
31:31300 and one.
31:32Every day?
31:33Every day.
31:37There we go.
31:38There we go.
31:45Dave is a world record holding power lifter.
31:50He may know how to pump iron, but his love life is out of shape.
31:55There must be some nice women at the gym.
31:56Of course there are.
31:57They're all youngsters, of course.
31:5918 rows.
32:00Great number.
32:00Wrong way now.
32:01He's done.
32:02He's got the one in the wrong place.
32:03Let's put it afterwards and then we're all right, then.
32:10Hello, Fred.
32:11How are you, Dave?
32:12Very well indeed, right?
32:13Nice to see you.
32:14You're in good shape.
32:15I do a lot of power lifting.
32:16I'll take you to the bar for a day.
32:18Yeah, okay.
32:18Thanks for having me.
32:19I'm here for fun, love and laughter.
32:21I've got plenty of life in me yet.
32:25So what do you bench?
32:2685 bench and a 150 deadlift.
32:28Wow.
32:29You're in top shape.
32:30All right.
32:30Dick, I see.
32:31Money will fix you.
32:31Yeah, okay.
32:32I'll give it.
32:32Indeed.
32:33Thanks, Fred.
32:33How are you, sir?
32:34Very well, thanks mate.
32:35Nice to meet you.
32:35What's your name?
32:36Dave.
32:37Dave.
32:37Welcome, Dave.
32:38And how are you feeling about all of this?
32:40I'm excited.
32:40I don't feel nervous at all.
32:41It's just, it's good fun, isn't it?
32:43I mean, I've been around long enough, haven't I?
32:45Have you done any sort of dating of late?
32:47Nothing serious in that sense.
32:48I've been married and divorced and it's cost me a lot of money.
32:51This time now, I'm going for multi-millionaiist and infamaniac.
32:55I don't want the money.
32:56Well, I just want to keep my little money going and live on my own, you know?
33:03I've been married before.
33:08I've got the ashes of the two husbands stacked up like Jenga.
33:14I put number two on top of number one and said, just be friends.
33:20Hoping to catch Dave's eye and be more than just friends is Claire.
33:26I've got an actual walk-in wardrobe of hats.
33:31And the hats?
33:32Oh, probably about 40.
33:36What, 40 hats?
33:39Hello, Claire.
33:40Hello, Fred.
33:41You know, this is not the location for Ascot.
33:46You are super elegant.
33:48Well, I don't normally dress up unless I'm going to Ascot.
33:50Wow.
33:51I'm going to give you the hat.
33:52Oh.
33:53You're going to look after that for me, please.
33:55Thanks.
33:57So tell me, what about dating then?
33:59What about men?
34:00I live in the middle of the countryside and there's no option to really meet people.
34:05I would just love to meet somebody who's jolly and fun.
34:09Well, the good thing, you've come to the right place.
34:11Come with me.
34:15I don't believe there's the one.
34:17I don't believe there's the one.
34:18Having had two.
34:23Well, it does look quite nice.
34:25Hello.
34:26Hello.
34:26Hello.
34:27You're my date, are you?
34:29Yes, my name's Claire.
34:30Claire, I'm Dave.
34:31Hello, Dave.
34:33Hello.
34:34Hello.
34:35Can I get you a drink?
34:36Yes, I was going to have a caipirinha.
34:38I can do you a caipirinha.
34:39Can you do that a thing?
34:40It's a great drink.
34:41Obviously, you're not married now.
34:42I mean, you're divorced or...
34:43Widowed.
34:44Oh, widowed.
34:45Oh, okay.
34:45What are you?
34:46I've been married and divorced three times.
34:48Oh, for goodness sake.
35:03So, do you get to go back home often then?
35:05Ah, I have only gone back twice.
35:09Kind of like me, Joe, when I go home to Ireland.
35:12So, I go on a farm.
35:13Nearest town is about three miles away.
35:16Okay.
35:16So, probably about day three, I'm like, yep, time to go back to England again.
35:20I am one of ten.
35:23So, I have four brothers and five sisters.
35:25I was outed by my sister when I was 21.
35:30She put two and two together and went back and told everyone.
35:34So, yeah, she ripped off the bandage.
35:38Oh.
35:39Yeah.
35:39I think parents are pretty good at figuring it out.
35:42My mother made the comment to me.
35:44We sort of had suspicions.
35:46No one else redecorates a room that often.
35:50Enjoy.
35:54Would you like any other drinks?
35:56I'm definitely going to have some wine.
35:57Small, medium or large?
35:59Huge.
36:00A pint.
36:01A pint.
36:02A pint then.
36:03Two larges?
36:04Good.
36:05Yeah, we might as well have a bottle.
36:07Yeah, one.
36:07Awesome.
36:10So, how have you managed to get through three wives?
36:17Yes.
36:18When I got married for the first time, I'm a teenager.
36:20You were young, yes.
36:21I got pregnant and we got married.
36:23That's what you did in those days.
36:24Definitely.
36:24And then you took on roles.
36:26The husband role was to create financial stability for the wife and the family.
36:31I didn't think I would get married and get divorced.
36:34For me, as far as I was concerned, it was for life.
36:36Every time, I got it wrong.
36:39In business, it's factual and you either achieve it or you don't.
36:43But with a marriage, it's emotional.
36:47I didn't spend enough time on looking after my wives in an emotional sense.
36:54I got the balance wrong, basically.
36:56I've learned from that now.
36:58Can I ask you how old you are?
36:5982.
37:01You're never.
37:02Golly, you look brilliant.
37:03Thank you very much indeed.
37:06I know physically I am the age I am, but mentally I'm still 20.
37:09You know what I mean?
37:10When you're retired, you've got to find something else to fill that gap.
37:14I went to the gym to keep fit and regularly.
37:16All well done.
37:18So, yes, that's what I did.
37:19And then powerlifting and one thing or another and just kept going and kept me fit.
37:24When I was 70, I got two world records and a European record.
37:37You should have come in wearing a tight T-shirt.
37:48I'm reminiscing on those things.
37:49I like the old films.
37:50Well, they did proper films in those days with a start, a middle and an end.
37:55Nowadays, you have no idea.
37:57Last time I had a picture, I stood up for the Queen.
37:59Of course.
38:00You've got the boyfriend you just wanted to snuggle next to.
38:03Oh, I know.
38:04Because, of course, you never had anywhere to go.
38:06Go in the backseat and have a kiss and cuddle.
38:10I've booked a trip to Croatia.
38:12It will be my first holiday solo.
38:16Oh, wow.
38:17Proper holiday.
38:18I've never done an actual solo holiday.
38:20Yeah.
38:21In my mind, there's that fear of, like, once you go on a holiday by yourself,
38:24I feel like you're sort of committing to being the old person on the cruise ship.
38:29It's always alone.
38:31Just because you go on, like, a holiday by yourself,
38:34doesn't mean that you're going to die alone.
38:37You are what you want you to be, if that makes sense.
38:44Do you go to a pub?
38:47Not particularly, no.
38:49My husband and I always went to the pub.
38:51How long have you been a widow?
38:52Well, it's about three years.
38:54I've been married before, and he died from cancer, which is very sad.
39:00And then Alistair, who I met skiing.
39:03Right.
39:03And we just hit it off very well, and we've been very happy.
39:06But he had dementia.
39:08Oh.
39:08And you do lose them a little bit earlier on, you know.
39:11It's just the saddest thing on earth.
39:13I can't explain.
39:16You're so looking forward to doing things,
39:18and then it's just stolen from you.
39:20When you lose a loved one, you never actually get over it, do you?
39:22You just learn to live with it in some respects, I suppose.
39:25That is totally true.
39:26There's so many things that remind you, if you're going shopping,
39:29and I see, he used to like Eccles Cakes,
39:31sometimes, if I'm in Tesco's, I have to literally walk away.
39:35Because it just makes me too sad.
39:38But I just want things to do.
39:40I mean, sometimes, I would absolutely talk to nobody except my chickens.
39:50I hope it's been fantastic.
39:52It has, thank you very much.
39:54Okay, great.
39:55Thank you very much.
39:57Hello.
39:59Shall we go?
40:01Let's make tracks.
40:03I think you want to see Sean again?
40:07Oh, come on, go first.
40:09Oh, no, you go first.
40:10Age, age first, you know.
40:12Wow.
40:12Age before beauty.
40:13That's what you were going to say.
40:14Age before beauty.
40:16Wow.
40:16I held back though.
40:17Thanks.
40:17I appreciate that.
40:19I feel like, I felt like it was a great friendship.
40:22I felt like there was great friendly before.
40:24Yeah.
40:24I felt like that as well.
40:26Yeah.
40:27Thank you very much.
40:29Thank you for today.
40:30This was a big first step for me.
40:32And I did feel very safe.
40:34So thank you.
40:35You're welcome.
40:36And I'm glad that I was able to provide the safeness for you to come back into the dating world.
40:42This is nice.
40:43It is.
40:44Give me a cuddle.
40:45It won't last three minutes.
40:48It's a cuddle.
40:49It's a hug.
40:50We'll go for a hug.
40:51It's three seconds.
40:53My arm got tired.
40:54I'm not surprised.
40:57This was about taking the first step.
40:59And when I take the second step, I don't know.
41:01But what I do know is that I didn't fall.
41:07Do you have a type?
41:09If you can make me laugh and make me smile, you won me over.
41:14I'm here, here.
41:18What are you looking for?
41:19This time around, I'm looking for a millionaire nymphomaniac.
41:22That's what I want.
41:25I'll sell for one out of the two.
41:29He's not my usual type.
41:31He said he wanted a millionaire nymphomaniac.
41:35And I said, will you be halfway there in one of them?
41:38And I said, look, I don't know about the other.
41:44Which one is it?
41:45Well, I've got a few quid, but...
41:49I'll come back to give you a bill in a bit.
41:50No, after all it says.
41:51Okey-dokey.
41:52You're a darling.
41:53Thank you very much.
41:55Well, I'll score now.
41:56As far as I'm concerned, that's what you do.
41:57I wouldn't want it any other way.
41:59Well, you've passed the test.
42:03That's the way it goes, isn't it?
42:05Do you think they gave us cushions, cos we're old people?
42:08Say that again.
42:09Cushions?
42:09Oh, cushions.
42:10Do you wear ear trumpets?
42:12No.
42:13No.
42:13No, I just didn't catch what you said.
42:14No, don't.
42:16I really was quite surprised he'd had three wives.
42:19I would have thought any of them could have held on to him,
42:22cos he was just quite good fun.
42:24You're very fit for your age.
42:32Hello.
42:32Hello, Clint.
42:35Mind the step.
42:36Yeah, mind the step.
42:37Got that.
42:38Do you think you'd like to see him again?
42:39Well, you're going to say ladies first, aren't you?
42:42It doesn't always, but I don't mind if you prefer me to say it first.
42:45Yes, you can say it first.
42:46OK.
42:47Yeah, I'll see you.
42:47I'll see you again.
42:49Yes, I'd very much like to see him again.
42:56I haven't had anybody hold my hand in.
42:58Well, there we are.
42:59I'll hold your hand again.
43:00How about that?
43:00Give me your hand in.
43:01There we are.
43:02Holding on.
43:02Lovely.
43:08I know nothing about weights.
43:10No, I don't.
43:11But the waiter was well impressed.
43:13I lie a lot.
43:14I worry about it.
43:15I finally found somebody who could make me be true, could make me be blue, or even be glad just
43:30to be sad thinking of you.
43:45Had to be you.
43:48Ooh.
43:50Ooh.
43:50Ooh.
43:52Ooh.
43:53Ooh.
43:53Ooh.
43:55Ooh.
43:55Ooh.
