00:00How can I help you?
00:14I was wondering, can I get somebody to do a wellness check?
00:17Okay, and what's the person's name?
00:19His name is Father Renee Roberts.
00:22I think my brother might have done something to hurt him and stole his car and everything.
00:26He made the comment to my dad that Father Renee was tied up.
00:32Do you mean that he's busy or physically tied up?
00:34Physically, and my brother is just crazy enough to do that.
00:37He's tied my sister up a couple years back and tried to kill her.
00:41That's what we're afraid of, that he might have hurt the old man.
00:49Every suspect accused of a crime has the right to remain silent.
00:53Many agree to be interrogated anyway.
00:56But they can stop the interview at any moment, making it a race against time.
01:04Justice hangs in the balance.
01:17Yes, ma'am.
01:20I called last night to have a well checked up on Father Renee Roberts in St. Augustine, and nobody ever called me back to let me know the verdict of that.
01:30One second, okay.
01:32It says that they didn't actually go out with him.
01:35His vehicle was also not there.
01:36Mr. Renee Roberts is not answering his phone still.
01:40We're worried about that man.
01:44I got a phone call from my sergeant at the time, and he told us we had a missing priest.
01:48And when he told me who it was, it kind of set me back on my heels a little bit.
01:53We made contact with the person who cleaned his apartment, and patrol deputies went inside the apartment with her, and he was not there.
02:19I noticed there were some couple of drawers that were pulled out.
02:25There was mail everywhere.
02:27There was food on the kitchen counter, which appeared that somebody may have taken a bite or two and kind of just left it there.
02:34There was no obvious signs of a struggle.
02:36There was no blood.
02:39So it looked like he could have just up and left.
02:42Father Renee was very prominent in St. Augustine, which is a town with a very large Catholic population.
02:58He had retired from the full-time priesthood, but still did services and different functions for the church.
03:05It had been several days that no one, even very close individuals, had not heard from him.
03:12The Catholic Church told us about Father Renee missing several appointments, which was very out of character.
03:19It's like he fell off the face of the earth.
03:24My brother was a saint.
03:26He always said he was going to be a priest someday.
03:32He loved helping people.
03:35I remember when he came home and said to my mother and father, I want to teach the deaf.
03:41And then he eventually went in to teach the blind, too.
03:45My brother saw the potential in so many people, and they were your family, no matter who they were.
03:52Sometimes I used to think he carried the world on his shoulders because he just wanted so much to make people happy.
04:02Amy Law says her family expected Father Renee to do the prayer service for her 88-year-old grandfather Monday night.
04:09Very sad, and we'd like the answers.
04:11The next morning, the priest didn't make it to the funeral home either, and a military chaplain had to step in.
04:17Definitely had a sinking feeling.
04:18Since then, fears about what happened to Father Renee have grown.
04:22So, tell me who Father Renee is to you.
04:38So, the first time I talked to Father Renee was right after I had my brother arrested.
04:44When I asked him to not thaw him out, we wanted him to stay there and dry out.
04:49My brother is Stephen Murray.
04:51Okay.
04:51My brother got out.
04:53He got released from jail.
04:54And Father Renee called me when he got out.
04:57My brother had already contacted him for money and rides and stuff like that.
05:02Okay.
05:03She told the detectives that Father Renee had become involved with individuals that were troubled, per se, that had been in jail.
05:11He always tried to actually help him recover, and Father Renee was trying to help Stephen with drug addiction and drug use.
05:22So, what made you call the sheriff's office?
05:26My dad came over, and my brother had been staying over there with them since he got released from jail.
05:33Okay.
05:33And so, I asked him, you know, how Stephen was doing.
05:37And he said Stephen left with Father Renee the night before, and that was the last time he'd seen him.
05:45I've been dialing his number ever since, like, for the past two days, and it's going straight to voicemail.
05:50Okay.
05:51And so, I'm like, oh, my gosh, you know, what if this man is hurt?
05:56Stephen is, he is a violent person.
05:59Okay.
05:59So, I mean, we just feel like he might have hurt that man.
06:07Does your dad know about all this?
06:09We got a feeling he does, but we think he's trying to cover him up for my brother.
06:13Behind the Signal 8 vehicle.
06:29We got Corolla.
06:30Blue in color.
06:31We're on 207, Hody's 495, and it looks like he doesn't want to stop.
06:36We're talking he's doing 115, 120 miles an hour on I-95.
06:40It's a high-stress situation.
06:43We knew that it was not Father Renee driving.
06:46He would never flee from a traffic stop.
06:50We didn't get close enough to see there was a white male individual in the driver's seat, but we could not identify him.
06:57I've got him right in front of me.
06:58433, yes, we need that vehicle to stop.
07:02We suspected the driver may be Stephen Murray, but we were not sure 100%.
07:07If you can't safely do that, I want you to back off.
07:10It's not worth it.
07:11All right, we're in the construction zone.
07:12We're going to have to slow it down, guys.
07:15It's before we lost him in the construction, we all backed off.
07:21It was a little bit frustrating and upsetting.
07:24Whoever was driving the car was a critical piece of the puzzle for us to be able to get to where Father Renee was.
07:30Bobby was there by himself.
07:47We told him, listen, we need to figure out where Stephen is.
07:51We need to talk to him.
07:53Bobby said, I can't help you and find him.
07:58While we were at his father's residence, Stephen contacted Bobby Murray on the phone and told him that he was running from the police.
08:06Stephen said, well, I just outran multiple deputies.
08:11The officer spoke with him and told him he needed to turn himself in.
08:17Now we just have to find him.
08:18As an investigator, you're a little conflicted on trying to expedite and get as much information as you can as quickly as possible.
08:43There were some things that I would have liked to have confronted Bobby Murray on, but we wanted to make sure that we kept him talking and that we didn't give him a reason to be offended or terminate the interview.
09:04How you doing, sir?
09:05My name is Gene Tolbert.
09:10I'm a detective with the Preacher Crime Unit in St. John's County.
09:13And I realize this is probably a crazy situation for you to be in.
09:21But I need your help.
09:24Okay.
09:26Your son's in a little bit of trouble.
09:28All right.
09:29And we need to figure out how we're going to handle this.
09:34Okay.
09:34Say a little bit of what you're talking about.
09:37Well, I can't answer that right now.
09:40Okay.
09:41So that's why I need to know what you know.
09:44And I can compare it to what I know.
09:47And then it kind of gives me a direction from there.
09:50We were working against the clock as far as Father Rene's well-being goes.
09:55There was still a hope that we would be able to bring Father Rene home alive.
09:59We really felt like that Bobby was going to be the key to unlocking this investigation.
10:04I got a call from detective and he said, Father Rene, he's missing.
10:19And people are very worried.
10:24I was so scared for him.
10:26I don't, I had this feeling.
10:27I was just so scared for him.
10:29Let me ask you this.
10:50Tell me, what do you know as far as your son's activities for the past three or four days?
10:56He came to the house last night.
10:58He walked up to the house.
10:59He was drinking.
11:00He left the house about four hours ago.
11:04When he left, he took my phone with him.
11:07Any idea where he went to?
11:08Uh, no.
11:13Okay.
11:13He didn't say.
11:15All right.
11:15He just told me he'd be back in a little while.
11:17When he left earlier, how did he leave?
11:18He got around, I don't know what kind of car it was.
11:21Could it have been a Toyota Corolla?
11:24It could have been, I don't know.
11:25Well, the reason why I ask is because that's what he was driving tonight when the police chased him.
11:29Yes, sir.
11:29I'm saying it could have been.
11:30Okay.
11:31And no idea where that car came from?
11:33No, sir.
11:33The car that we spoke of, uh, that you said Stephen showed up in your house, um, it actually
11:39belongs to Father Renee, the person who's been reported missing out of St. John's County.
11:44And the circumstances in which that person went missing are very suspicious.
11:52As a detective, my number one question is, it's why is Stephen driving this man's car?
11:59And where's this man at?
12:03I, to be honest, we got on up.
12:05He called me.
12:07He said, I got 15, 20 cops talk, cars behind me.
12:11And I asked him, I said, son, I said, what the hell are you trying to do?
12:15He said, I don't want to leave no more here.
12:18He said, I don't want to leave.
12:19Okay.
12:20And that's the exact words he told me.
12:23And I told him, I said, son, don't do that to me.
12:25Right.
12:25Okay.
12:25I'm with you.
12:35Okay.
12:35I can't deal with it.
12:36I'm very concerned about some of Stephen's statements about wanting to die.
12:41And I don't want to see Stephen hurt or dead or anything more than, any more than you do.
12:47And if he has this kind of, you know, attitude and, you know, I'm just asking you for your help the best you can.
12:59I was sitting there, that's where he took off, you know.
13:01Look, there are so many scenarios that are possible.
13:07If you were to call Stephen right now and tell Stephen that if he wants you to come pick him up, that you'll come pick him up.
13:17He knows I'm here with y'all.
13:21He ain't going back to Britain.
13:25But I still got to find this man.
13:28I would have no idea.
13:29After talking to Bobby Murray for a period of time, it seemed futile, and he was just eating away at the clock.
13:37Hang tight with me, and I'll get right back with you, okay?
13:40That's all right.
13:43If he had information, it was pretty clear he wasn't going to share it with us.
13:49Blood is thicker than water.
13:50It seemed like he would do everything he could to protect his son.
13:59This is an exclusive video of Father Rene's family leaving the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office
14:10after getting an update on the search for the missing priest.
14:13They told me they didn't want to go into detail, but they appeared disappointed and frustrated.
14:17They had tracked the phone to a sparsely populated, heavily wooded area.
14:39Instead, SWAT starts working down this firebreak in the woods, searching for Stephen, and they
14:45come upon Father Rene's vehicle.
14:48As they're approaching, they find Stephen Murray behind the wheel.
14:52Stephen apparently sees some motion or light in his rearview mirror, starts the car up, and
14:57takes off.
14:57However, he ended up crashing and running away from the vehicle.
15:05So he has fled into basically the jungle.
15:08We thought maybe Father Rene is in the trunk of that vehicle.
15:24When they approached and looked, Father Rene was not in there.
15:28At that point, we suspected that something bad happened to Father Rene, but we did not
15:47know.
15:48We wanted to bring him back home, whether alive or deceased.
15:52Finding Stephen and capturing him alive was a priority.
15:58Just to know that he could kind of be lurking above, kind of in the tree canopy, is a pretty
16:14scary scenario.
16:15After several hours of kind of keeping constant pressure and perimeter on this area, working
16:21it with teams, dogs, and helicopters, we kind of catch a break, and finally, Stephen comes
16:27down.
16:28I think it was very tiring on Stephen, and I think he just ran out of wind.
16:35Fortunately, he didn't have a weapon with him at the time, and he was forced to concede
16:41and surrender.
16:42Stephen Murray was originally from Aiken County, South Carolina.
17:10We have a history with him.
17:12We have a history with this guy.
17:13My experience in dealing with Stephen, anytime, especially an overbearing male figure moved in
17:21aggressively towards him, Stephen would automatically put that wall up and he would shut down.
17:26And eventually, he's going to lower you up.
17:28I don't see that green chair.
17:33Gentlemen, let me shut this door here.
17:35Gentlemen.
17:36If you would.
17:37If you would.
17:38If you would.
17:39If you would.
17:40If you would.
17:42Oh, man.
17:42You know where I work at.
17:43I don't know.
17:44I don't know.
17:45I have no sense.
17:46Yeah.
17:47Where did you do your time?
17:48I'm in.
17:49I'm in.
17:50I'm in.
17:51I'm in.
17:52I'm in.
17:53general.
17:54I'm in.
17:55My first and major concern as everybody's was for the safety of father, Renee, that's
18:00priority.
18:01Where is he?
18:02Is he safe?
18:05But time starts to become our enemy.
18:08And Stephen was the only person above ground who knew where Father Rene was.
18:16He was the only person.
18:38I know you're not going to ask for it, but would you like something to eat?
18:43If we're hungry.
18:45I'm going to have no deep ass out of my whore, okay?
18:48Let me work on that.
18:52Man, I'm just tired, man.
18:54I'm really not, you know, man.
18:56I'm very tired, man.
18:58I wish somebody could just help me.
19:00I mean, just take this from it, man.
19:02Well, that's what I'm here for.
19:03I'm here to talk to you and tell me what I need to do to help you.
19:15Hey, you get that one, huh?
19:17We've been driving all day.
19:19Yeah.
19:19So, which one you want?
19:21I probably want that.
19:23It's easy to have conversation while you're eating food.
19:26Take some of the pressure off.
19:28Also, that releases some chemicals in their body,
19:30especially if they haven't had any of that in a while.
19:33Sometimes makes them a little bit more talkative.
19:36Behind the hill in Florida,
19:38towards me,
19:40with aggravating,
19:44fleeing and losing.
19:48And they don't even know that was me driving.
19:50Didn't you talk to a policeman that night?
19:54On the phone?
19:55Yeah, I talked to a policeman.
19:57Yeah?
19:59Didn't you tell them you were driving the car?
20:01I talked to a JSO.
20:03They said,
20:04man,
20:04I don't know what you did.
20:07But you pissed them off and they were going to talk to you.
20:09I said,
20:09okay,
20:09well,
20:10I'll turn myself in and talk to him.
20:16Didn't,
20:16didn't tell them I was driving though.
20:18At that point after eating,
20:23we knew he was settled.
20:25He was ready to go.
20:27He knows that now we're going to start getting into some questioning.
20:31In,
20:32in more of a confrontational way.
20:35But how fast were you driving?
20:36To lose all the police cars?
20:40I wasn't driving.
20:43I'm,
20:43I'm not going to argue with you about it.
20:46We know you were.
20:46Because you,
20:47because you,
20:47because you told,
20:48you told your dad,
20:49you told your sister,
20:50you know,
20:51we didn't just magic our ways up here.
20:54So you have his car.
20:55We haven't heard or seen him since.
20:58How does that look?
21:02I mean,
21:03I understand.
21:04How does that look?
21:05Well,
21:05just because something looks some way,
21:07you know what I mean?
21:08Yeah.
21:08And that's,
21:09that's,
21:09that's what we're trying to refer.
21:10It doesn't look good.
21:12That's what I'm trying to tell you.
21:14It does not look good.
21:16This man is missing.
21:17We're just out here trying to fight.
21:19A law abiding citizen.
21:20You know,
21:21I smoke another cigarette,
21:22man.
21:22Y'all asking a lot of questions.
21:24There was something I could do to help you.
21:25You know what I'm saying?
21:25Do that.
21:26I wouldn't.
21:28When did you get his car?
21:30I think I called him
21:31and told him that I had some money for him
21:33if he wanted to go get it.
21:35Where do you think you got that?
21:37He picked me up right there by my dad's.
21:40What did you do after that?
21:41Me and Father Nate was riding.
21:43He didn't know
21:44that I was going to meet somebody
21:46for some reason,
21:47which I didn't tell him that
21:48because, you know,
21:49he's a priest.
21:51I was going to be meeting a dude
21:52at the camera room right there.
21:53So I asked Father Nate
21:55if he would stand right here for a minute,
21:57and, you know,
21:57Father Nate usually does that.
21:59I dropped him off
22:00and I never came back.
22:03I mean,
22:03I ended up doing drugs
22:07and I never came back and got him.
22:10And that's how I got that car.
22:12And I'm like,
22:13oh,
22:13I'm in trouble,
22:14you know,
22:15I was sitting there,
22:16and it was too late,
22:18you know,
22:18so I just kept the car,
22:19you know what I mean?
22:20What did you do after that?
22:21I drove,
22:22and I was scared,
22:24and I know that I was in trouble.
22:27What do you think he is right now?
22:30I'm not.
22:31No.
22:32Did you ever go back out
22:33to that area to look for him?
22:35I'm not sure.
22:37I mean,
22:37I was probably on the drug,
22:39you know,
22:40mine somewhere else,
22:41you know?
22:43I can't even give you
22:43an exact date,
22:44but there's no sort of
22:45a lot of people with it.
22:46I can't accurately say that
22:49because I don't know.
22:52About what time
22:53did you drop him off?
22:54You know,
22:55so...
22:56On Sunday?
22:57I'm not sure which day it was.
22:59I mean,
22:59I'm really not sure.
23:03We had been talking to him
23:04for such a long time,
23:05and we were going in circles.
23:07I've never been to a place.
23:10I don't know, man.
23:11I don't really know, man.
23:13I mean,
23:13I'm not real familiar
23:15with that area.
23:15What was he wearing
23:17the last time you told him?
23:21I mean,
23:22he's asking a lot,
23:23you know what I mean?
23:24You know,
23:24I couldn't honestly tell you
23:26what he was exactly wearing.
23:28He's been giving
23:28non-specific answers.
23:30His defenses are up.
23:32I don't think
23:32we're getting anywhere,
23:34so I felt like
23:35we need to push
23:35it a little bit harder.
23:36It's kind of a make it
23:37or break it part
23:38of that interview
23:38because all Stephen's
23:39got to do is say,
23:40I want my lawyer.
23:42Listen,
23:42I think you know
23:43a lot more
23:44than what you're telling me.
23:45he could be alive
23:47and well
23:48somewhere right now.
23:48He could be on vacation
23:49for all I know.
23:51I mean,
23:52he hasn't told me anything.
23:53He hasn't told y'all anything,
23:54so therefore,
23:55we all don't know.
23:56I mean,
23:56you know what I mean?
23:57Steve,
23:58come on now.
24:00I'm asking your help.
24:02Any piece of information
24:04that you can give us
24:05so that we can
24:06bring him home,
24:08and I'm answering
24:11every question
24:11you're asking.
24:12Well,
24:12that's the thing
24:13that we don't think
24:13you're being truthful about.
24:14Yeah.
24:15I mean,
24:17it's opinion,
24:18you know what I mean?
24:18Opinions like ass
24:19everybody's got one,
24:20you know?
24:21What do you think?
24:21Is he dead?
24:24I mean,
24:24I couldn't tell you.
24:25I mean,
24:26me personally,
24:27I don't know.
24:28I mean,
24:29I mean,
24:30I couldn't tell you
24:30if he's dead or alive
24:32because I don't know.
24:33What did you say
24:34that happened to him?
24:35I mean,
24:35you just asked that
24:36and I just gave you
24:37all the answers,
24:37you know?
24:38You're asking the same questions
24:39aspect and a different answer,
24:42you know what I mean?
24:42It's a definition of sanity.
24:44So if you're going to
24:45keep on trying to dig at me,
24:47then we ain't got
24:47nothing to talk about.
24:48What do you mean?
24:50Because you ain't
24:51getting nowhere.
24:52I mean,
24:52I'm going to continue
24:53to ask the same questions
24:55and I don't think
24:55there's nothing else
24:56we can talk about.
25:05You can see
25:31by his attitude
25:33he was going to shut down
25:34and not talk to us anymore.
25:37But you cannot give up.
25:52Our job
25:53during this interview,
25:55get him talking,
25:56keep him talking.
25:57I was not there
25:59to get the confession.
26:02It was to make sure
26:03that I left the door open
26:05for another investigator
26:07at another time.
26:09All right,
26:10we ready to go,
26:11ain't we?
26:11We rocking and rolling, man.
26:13Ready.
26:13What's going on?
26:14I can't call it, man.
26:16Another interview?
26:21Man,
26:21I'm dope as you did live.
26:23We're asking the same question
26:25over and over and over.
26:26I'm just looking at him, man.
26:29I can't be serious.
26:31Oh,
26:31you're going to try
26:32to make it more comfortable, too.
26:33I'm sorry,
26:34we were putting you
26:34in an ambulance
26:35to go to the hospital.
26:36I'm going to probably
26:37go over to someone else.
26:41Now,
26:41you remember me, right?
26:42I do.
26:43You sat in my office,
26:44remember?
26:45Yes, I do.
26:46And we were straight and forward.
26:48You were younger then.
26:49I was 16.
26:50Well,
26:51you had just turned 17.
26:52Let's turn 17.
26:52You just turned 17, huh?
26:55The last time we spoke
26:56was a burglary.
26:57Remember the samurai sword?
26:59And you had a good memory.
27:00I do have a good memory.
27:01A good memory.
27:02I do have a good memory.
27:03You can watch his body language.
27:05He's uncrossed his arms.
27:06He's sitting back
27:06in the chair again.
27:07He's not slumped over.
27:09He's looking up again.
27:10It was best for people
27:12that he had encountered
27:13in the past
27:14to walk in that room.
27:16Just put him
27:17a little bit more at ease.
27:20Stephen Murray
27:21had had a very,
27:22very difficult
27:23and abusive childhood.
27:25We knew
27:25if you touched on
27:26that emotion
27:27that Stephen carries
27:28inside of him
27:29and then back off of it,
27:31that would open a door.
27:33A floodgate.
27:35I'm wondering,
27:36you've got a decent head
27:38on your shoulders.
27:39Why would you get messed up
27:40in something that you've got
27:42to be sitting
27:42in a sheriff's office
27:43that's an ungodly hour?
27:46Well, you know,
27:47it's like you got this baby.
27:49New born baby.
27:50You raised that baby.
27:52A, birth,
27:53control of the rape.
27:55You know,
27:57and the baby grows up.
27:58Ungo.
28:00Becomes a product
28:01of their environment.
28:01That's a product
28:02of their environment.
28:03You got it, Rob.
28:05I mean, but,
28:07hey, what can I do
28:08about it, you know?
28:09Get dealt a hand
28:10and do what you can with it.
28:11All right,
28:11you pray about it,
28:12but, hell,
28:13my knees is tired
28:14and my knees is getting sore.
28:16My knees are sore.
28:18I had calluses on them
28:19and I need some of the breathing.
28:20No one knows
28:20calluses how young man.
28:22I don't blame you for that.
28:25I am who I am.
28:26Somebody jump out
28:27of the car and run
28:27and y'all holler
28:28don't do it, Stephen.
28:29That's how I do
28:29y'all know.
28:30You were straight with me
28:31and I was straight with you.
28:33I pride my whole life
28:33to change who I am.
28:35I'm a sick puppy.
28:36I mean, I'm sick.
28:37I mean, I'm f***ing.
28:39I mean, I'm trying
28:40to be that
28:40and it tires you out,
28:42don't it?
28:43It f***ing destroys me.
28:44You're mentally tired.
28:45Because I don't want
28:46to be that person.
28:46You're not physically tired,
28:47you're mentally tired.
28:48Mentally, I mean,
28:49I'm f***ing tired.
28:49You need a rest.
28:50You need a mental rest.
28:51But,
28:53do you know
28:53where it really all begins?
28:56It begins
28:56when you're being honest
28:57with yourself.
28:58There you go.
28:59Stephen came back to life.
29:01He was initiating.
29:02He was engaging.
29:03And when that happens,
29:04that opens the door
29:05for the potential
29:06for something else
29:07to follow up.
29:08We're done.
29:09Let's go smoke.
29:09I'll smoke,
29:10but you are better.
29:11You're right-handed, right?
29:12Right.
29:13And you're left-handed.
29:14I walked out
29:15being 100% satisfied
29:17with what we got
29:18because I knew
29:19there's an opportunity
29:20for tomorrow.
29:28The search for Father Rene
29:29is not over.
29:30Numerous sites
29:31have already been looked at
29:32and more are to follow.
29:33Father Rene is still missing,
29:35but his presence
29:35is still felt
29:36at the San Sebastian
29:37Catholic Church.
29:38We are going to find him
29:39and we're going to bring him home.
29:43How do you feel
29:55about going back
29:56to Florida, man?
29:57I feel real good.
29:58We thought that I was going
30:17to soften him up
30:18and get him to talk.
30:20It was obvious
30:21that they had
30:22a very close relationship,
30:23but there was
30:25a calculated risk
30:26in putting Bobby Jean
30:28in this position.
30:30Steven was being
30:30so unpredictable
30:31at that point,
30:32everybody's fear
30:33was that he was going
30:33to shut down completely.
30:34We brought your sister here.
30:54She's obviously told us
30:55that you got a big heart,
30:56that you're not a bad man.
30:59We're just trying to bring
30:59Crusher to the family,
31:01find out where he's at,
31:02so we can bring him home.
31:04And I don't want you
31:04to think that I'm going
31:05against you right now.
31:07I just want you
31:08to do the right thing
31:09for a change.
31:12Okay?
31:12I'm not going to look
31:13into you any different
31:15than you being my brother
31:16and I love you.
31:17I love you too, man.
31:20Tell me one thing.
31:24You ain't got to say
31:25nothing else.
31:26Just say yes or no.
31:27Can I help him?
31:30Can I help him?
31:32I don't know, dear.
31:36I think we want to see you
31:37do the right thing
31:38and, you know,
31:40regardless of whatever
31:42it is where he's...
31:44Thank you, dear.
31:45I appreciate it.
31:47And I ain't got nothing
31:48to say.
31:49I mean, I ain't got nothing
31:51to say, so I'm not really
31:53I don't know.
31:54You ain't willing
31:55to throw me any hints?
31:58All the way to the grave.
32:01I know.
32:02He's saying,
32:02I'm sorry I had to taste
32:04this plate with me.
32:05I'm sorry, baby.
32:06I'm in.
32:08Look, we all make bad decisions
32:10in our life.
32:12I'm fortunate
32:12I made a lot of them,
32:14you know?
32:14There was a moment
32:18you can see his face
32:19expression change,
32:20his body posture change,
32:23and he kind of just
32:25lumped to the side
32:26and all of us
32:27were convinced
32:27that he was going
32:28to break down.
32:30We thought that was
32:31the moment for us
32:32to actually go at him hard.
32:35They built a big case
32:36for you down in Florida.
32:38It looked like
32:39the Statue of Liberty
32:40and I'll try to knock it down.
32:42Yeah, well,
32:42that's not going to happen.
32:44We need to bring
32:45the priest home.
32:47You just got to face him.
32:49Okay?
32:50And lying is not
32:51going to fix anything.
32:54I think I'm lying,
32:55I mean,
32:56because you are.
32:57You are,
32:58I mean,
32:58call me a liar
33:00to my face.
33:01That's right.
33:05I mean,
33:06I reckon I like
33:08to exercise my rights,
33:09then.
33:11I felt like
33:12he punched me
33:14in the mouth
33:14when he said that.
33:16He pulled the trigger
33:17and did his Miranda warnings
33:19and that was that.
33:20We're done.
33:24I tell you,
33:25it was soul crushing
33:26to be that close.
33:28The reality was
33:29that we may never
33:30be able to locate him.
33:31we had to come up
33:41with a new strategy
33:42on how to move forward
33:43and get our heads
33:44back in the game.
33:45we're going through hell
33:56out here that we don't even deserve.
33:57people talking
34:11about that
34:14we used to help you
34:15cover up stuff
34:17and all,
34:17and we probably know
34:18where Father Renee is.
34:20We don't know
34:21how much more
34:22we can handle.
34:23I just broke down,
34:24cried yesterday
34:25because we don't
34:25deserve this
34:26my kids
34:28don't deserve this.
34:32I'm sorry,
34:32Gene.
34:33I mean,
34:33hell,
34:33what do you want me to do?
34:34I mean,
34:35tell me.
34:36I just want you
34:37to be honest with them,
34:38regardless of the situation.
34:41This ain't going to be
34:41over with
34:42until they find Father Renee.
34:45I love you
34:46with all my heart.
34:46My cell phone rings
34:55and I learned
34:57Stephen Murray
34:58has asked to speak
34:59to detectives.
35:00We didn't know about what,
35:01but he wanted
35:02to talk to us.
35:06He'd made a phone call
35:07to Bobby Jean
35:08and I do believe
35:10that conversation
35:11with Bobby Jean
35:12could have been
35:13a very pivotal moment
35:14for Stephen.
35:15I was hoping
35:17that Stephen
35:19was ready to talk.
35:20He was getting ready
35:21to get it off his chest
35:22and tell us.
35:25Okay.
35:26All right.
35:27It's your show, brother.
35:28We're just here to watch.
35:29Tell us.
35:29All right.
35:31Well,
35:32the first part
35:34of the story
35:35I told y'all
35:35where Father Renee
35:37picked me up
35:38and
35:40I was going to pay
35:42him the money,
35:42which was true.
35:44I picked him up
35:45after I got back
35:45from the dope trap
35:46down off 90s
35:48and
35:50went up to
35:52South Carolina
35:52and I said,
35:53I'm going to see my kids.
35:55Did he say
35:55he didn't want to go?
35:57He said,
35:58no,
35:58he didn't want to go.
35:59He just said,
36:00okay.
36:01I mean,
36:02I wasn't aggressive
36:03with it or anything.
36:04You know,
36:04I wanted to go
36:07see my kids.
36:08Where's he at
36:08in the car?
36:08He's in the trunk
36:11by that point.
36:12He's in the trunk.
36:13Okay.
36:14Is he tied up
36:15or anything like that?
36:16No,
36:16so.
36:16How'd you get him
36:17to get in the trunk?
36:18That's the thing.
36:20Did you say
36:20or else?
36:21No,
36:21he didn't say
36:22or else.
36:23So I need you
36:23to get in the trunk,
36:24Father Renee.
36:25He said,
36:26okay,
36:26climb right in there.
36:28You know,
36:28I helped him in there
36:29and told him,
36:30I said,
36:31just do what I tell you to
36:32and everything's
36:33going to be okay.
36:35And,
36:35you know,
36:36I'm talking to him,
36:37you know,
36:37and he's still telling me,
36:38you know,
36:38that I'm in
36:39great trouble
36:40and that I'm never
36:42going to get away
36:43with this.
36:44And I'm thinking,
36:45you know,
36:45like,
36:45oh man,
36:46you know,
36:47maybe I am
36:47in a great deal
36:48of trouble.
36:49I guess I got
36:50real skid style,
36:51man.
36:52I'm scared,
36:53I guess,
36:54you know.
36:54I mean,
36:55scared for me,
36:56scared for my life.
36:57Is there something
36:58that snaps in your head
36:58like,
36:59hey,
36:59I got to take care of this
37:00or this is going
37:01to be a problem?
37:02If he's going to go back
37:03and tell on me though
37:04and get me in trouble,
37:06I mean,
37:07and,
37:07you know,
37:10go ahead and get rid of you,
37:12you know.
37:12Okay.
37:13So tell me about that.
37:14What happened with that?
37:15Well,
37:16he's steady talking
37:17to the trunk,
37:17you know,
37:18he's hollering,
37:18I got to use a bathroom.
37:20I said,
37:20okay,
37:20you know,
37:21I'm going to let you out
37:22in just a second,
37:23you know.
37:26So,
37:26I stopped him
37:29and let him out
37:29and use a bathroom.
37:30I had a nine millimeter
37:31and I said,
37:33I stopped him.
37:35Okay.
37:36So like,
37:37me and you
37:37are looking at each other
37:38right now
37:39and you shot him
37:40like that?
37:41It was more of
37:42from the side
37:43and then he fell
37:46and I shot him
37:47in the head.
37:48Okay.
37:49And left.
37:51Just listening
37:52to Steven talk
37:53about
37:54the way he murdered
37:55Father Rene
37:56in such a cold
37:57and callous way,
37:58that's one of the times
37:59in my career
38:00that I've actually felt
38:01the presence
38:02of evil
38:02in an interview room.
38:18I shot him
38:19in the chest one time
38:22and in the head
38:23the last time.
38:25Steven finally confessed
38:28Father Rene
38:29was no longer alive.
38:31He's dead somewhere
38:32but he still needed
38:35to come clean
38:36and tell us
38:36where the body was.
38:38Finding the priest
38:39and bringing him
38:40back home
38:41and making sure
38:42that the family
38:43got a proper burial
38:44for him
38:45was critical.
38:46Well, tell us
38:48what happened
38:49where you say
38:50you killed
38:51Father Rene.
38:51Where'd that occur at?
38:53I don't know.
38:54Like on the side
38:54of the road
38:55or a gas station?
38:56On the side of the road.
38:56Okay.
38:57It's a real wooded area.
38:58Real wooded area?
38:59Yeah, like,
39:00you know,
39:00y'all would've never
39:01found them.
39:02It happened in Georgia
39:03close to the south.
39:05You know what highway
39:06it is?
39:06What road?
39:08I know you know
39:09those roads
39:09like the back
39:10of your hand up there.
39:10You know it better
39:11than I do.
39:11Yeah, I know the roads
39:12but I mean,
39:13I would have to take you
39:15to what I mean
39:16because I mean,
39:18period.
39:18I mean,
39:19I don't want to sit here.
39:20I like to ride for a man,
39:22you know,
39:22but I mean,
39:23but I mean,
39:24as far as I take me
39:25to the exact location,
39:26I would have to be
39:27in the car
39:27and point it out.
39:30So we were all thinking
39:31he's playing games again.
39:34I think that gave Stephen
39:35a certain sense of power
39:37and authority
39:37and that he was in charge
39:39in that situation
39:40but the decision was made
39:42to put Stephen in a car.
39:46and almost immediately
39:57when we pulled up
39:58we saw a flock of buzzards
40:01kind of take off
40:02which kind of drew
40:04our attention over
40:05and you could see
40:06Father Renee's body
40:08laying at the edge
40:09of the wood line.
40:09It's an emotional
40:15rollercoaster,
40:16obviously.
40:17It tugs on your heart.
40:19It eats away
40:20at your being sometimes
40:22but it's about
40:24getting to the truth.
40:27Ultimately,
40:27it's very important
40:28that we find closure
40:30for loved ones
40:31of the deceased.
40:47It was a special ceremony
40:49for a man
40:50who meant so much
40:52to so many
40:52here in our community.
40:53People came from all over
40:55to say goodbye
40:56to the beloved priest.
40:58He touched the hearts
40:59of so many.
40:59He was a gift
41:00and a blessing to us.
41:02And with that,
41:03it was time
41:04to send off
41:05Father Renee.
41:05without the interviews,
41:28I don't think that
41:29this case would have
41:30came to the conclusion
41:31that it did.
41:31and I do believe
41:34that justice
41:34was served
41:35in this case
41:35but I don't think
41:37there's any amount
41:38of resolution
41:39for this case
41:40that would ever
41:41satisfy anybody.
41:42People saw
41:43the killing
41:44of a Catholic priest
41:45as kind of
41:46an attack
41:47on our very fiber
41:49and I really think
41:51that stirred emotion
41:52in a lot of people.
41:53Father Renee had actually
42:05talked about
42:06possibly dying
42:07at someone's hands
42:08in the future
42:09and that if that
42:11had ever happened,
42:13his wishes would be
42:14that that person
42:16not be subjected
42:18to the death penalty.
42:18So it was agreed upon
42:22that Stephen
42:23would plead guilty
42:24to life in prison
42:26for malice murder
42:27and he would spend
42:28the rest of his life
42:29behind bars.
42:31I believe it was a gift
42:36from my brother
42:37Father Renee
42:37to love
42:38and not hate
42:39no matter what.
42:43So I in my heart
42:45have forgiven Stephen
42:46for taking my brother's life.
42:49I know my brother's
42:50with God
42:51and we'll be all together
42:53someday
42:54but you gotta let it go.
42:58You gotta let anger go
42:59and the hatred go
43:00and just love.
