00:02Humanities teacher Rachel Toyer worked from contract to contract from 2017 while also hoping to become a solo IVF mum.
00:11I was quite literally injecting hormones for IVF on school camp.
00:15She had a son and later hoped to access her long service leave entitled to contract workers who don't have
00:22more than three months break in service.
00:24When my son got sick I thought, foolishly, I wonder if they'll give it to me a little early.
00:30Ms Toyer's leave had been unknowingly cancelled for breaking the three month rule by several days after she'd had her
00:37baby.
00:38She says this policy disadvantages women who predominantly make up the industry.
00:43The vast majority of those have babies. The policy affects them more than everyone else and they are the people
00:50taking gaps in their services.
00:52But the gap is to have a baby.
00:56Previously, if an SA contract teacher took more than a three month break in service, they would lose their long
01:02service leave.
01:03Even if they were on Commonwealth paid parental leave.
01:06That's not the same in other states. In Queensland, Commonwealth leave doesn't interrupt a teacher's service.
01:13It's the same in New South Wales.
01:15She says her entitlements were reinstated after lengthy negotiations.
01:19In this case, when she's raised those concerns, her entitlements have been restored, which I think is the most important
01:25point.
01:25And then we continue that work to make sure that there's that information and clarity for other teachers in that
01:31situation.
01:31The department has been hesitant to acknowledge a policy change, but through a staff newsletter last week, has said contract
01:39teachers can now access 15 months break in service for parenting responsibilities without any impacts to long service leave.
01:46They're able to know what to do with what they are in the process of an investment and a salary.
01:46It's not easy to understand for those who are in the office, but the other ones, but the other ones
01:46are going to be able to afford them.
01:47If you want them to keep up the track, then you can tell that they can be able to move
01:48your face.
01:48You can tell that they don't have to be able to make sure that their needs are going to be
01:48there for them.
01:48They can't know about the use of the needs of the system here in the lab.
01:48You can tell them about the case, you can call them to be able to feel free.
01:48You
