00:06I've been diagnosed with breast cancer. Time is of the essence and we can't put
00:12this off. So tomorrow morning they're gonna put what they call a port in my
00:17chest to administer chemotherapy and the goal is to shrink the tumor before they
00:22try to remove it. You said they cut it early. Yes and I am so grateful for that
00:28but I don't want to give you the wrong impression. This is not gonna be a walk
00:33in the park. Your mother underwent genetic testing. The results show that she has a
00:41variant of the BRCA gene. It increases your risk of getting certain types of
00:46cancer. It means that you both have a 50-50 chance of having inherited it and if
00:53you did, then the same is true for your children. I know this is a lot to
00:59process and I know how much you love your children.
01:16Good afternoon Nicole. Calling to wish me a Happy New Year? Hi Ted. I have to run
01:24something by you. Okay, what is it? This will be easier to do in person rather than
01:32over the phone. Are you at the hotel? I'm at the hospital catching up on some work
01:37but I can meet you somewhere. No, your office is fine. What's the best time? I'll be
01:43here all day. Okay bye. Mom. Got your message. What's up? It sounded important.
01:57What's wrong? Mom, are you alright? Thank you sweetheart. I've got it from here. Now I know this was an
02:06outpatient procedure but you still need to take it easy. I know. I will. It's not
02:14every day you get a port put into your body so people can give you chemotherapy.
02:18Are you in pain? No, no. It's not even that uncomfortable. It's just a reality check.
02:26The real reality will be when the chemo starts and then the surgery and all the
02:32hell that goes along with it.
03:10Babe, now that the holidays are over, let's get back to finding out a little
03:15hideaway on St. Bart's. But I don't think we'll find something as perfect as the one
03:21that got away. Well, we'll find something even better, baby. Don't worry.
03:25Well, better properties tend to cost a little more. Well, it just so happens that I don't
03:33know how to put a price on your happiness. Oh, it's the office.
03:40Oh, I thought you weren't going in today. I'm not. Which is why I need to take this
03:44now. Hey, did they accept the offer? Yeah, of course they would do this on the holiday.
03:54Fewer people around, less scrutiny. I mean, it's smart if you don't mind dirty tactics.
04:00So, tell me exactly what went down.
04:13Ugh. Ugh, you again. Ugh. Okay.
04:35Hi. I need to talk to Bill. Don't you ever get tired of barging in when you're not welcome?
04:43I may not be welcomed by you. But trust me, Bill will want to see me.
04:55Do you want coffee if Wanda made a fresh pot?
04:58Mom, we don't need anything except for answers.
05:02Something's obviously wrong. What is it?
05:04Is it Dad? Has he done something to upset you?
05:06This has nothing to do with your father. Let's just sit down, okay?
05:14I know he's here. I called Caroline and she said that he's working from home today.
05:19Caroline needs to learn a little more discretion.
05:22Well, educate her later. I need to see Bill now.
05:24Now you want to see him and you can't always get what you want.
05:28I don't have time for this!
05:30None of us do. This obsession you've got with my husband has got to stop.
05:36We both hope that you move on with your new man, but clearly not since you're starting off the new
05:41year right where you were last January.
05:44Thinking about Bill. Missing Bill. Pining over Bill.
05:48Maybe you won't find him I will. What is all of this?
05:49I need to talk to you alone. And I said, get out!
05:54Danny, there's nothing that you need to say-
05:56It's about our girls!
06:03Let's have a nice, normal day today. It's the last one we'll have for a while. Maybe even-
06:10Uh, stop right there. I'm not about to let you give up even before the race has begun.
06:17I'm just accepting what's right around the corner. The pain, hair loss, some nausea. Some days I may not be
06:28able to get out of bed.
06:29Well, lucky for you that you have me to wait on you hand and foot. I bet I'd have made
06:35a pretty good butler.
06:37Well, that would have been a waste. Senator was your destiny.
06:43No, I was destined to become your husband. Yeah. And they say, if you have a job you love, you
06:52never have to work a day in your life.
06:56Well, I'm certainly glad for one thing. Just the what?
07:00You know what I mean. I'm glad we told the girls everything yesterday. And now passing along the news to
07:08the rest of the family is in their hands. Lord knows it was difficult enough just telling Danny and Nicole.
07:14Our girls are strong, capable women. And them breaking the news to their own families takes one more burden off
07:25of you.
07:27Now let's get back to this nice, normal day that you wanted. While a normal New Year's Day, we usually
07:35spend a little bit of time looking at photo albums, thinking about this beautiful family that we have built.
07:46Sweetheart, I know it's our tradition. And usually I love doing it, but...
07:52But?
07:53But I don't know if it's going to take my mind off this awful cancer that's about to take over
07:59everything.
08:00Gran. Cancer.
08:10Danny, what could you have to say about our girls that you don't want Hayley to know?
08:15Please. I'm not asking for me. I'm asking for them.
08:21I don't know what this is about, but dragging it out with a debate is not going to help anyone,
08:26baby. Let me talk to Danny.
08:32If that's what you want.
08:45Are the girls alright?
08:47They are now.
08:49But they're not going to be when I tell them what they need to hear. I know I wasn't.
08:52Will you stop talking around and just tell me what's going on?
08:57It's my mother.
09:00It's breast cancer.
09:04And it's bad.
09:14Mom, maybe you should sit.
09:17Whatever is going on, just tell us. We'll help you through it.
09:21Nothing is wrong with me. I mean, I don't know if anything is wrong. At least not yet.
09:26Mom, please. You're not making any sense.
09:28Do you need a doctor? I think we need to get her to a doctor.
09:31No. Please. I'm...
09:34This is about all of us.
09:36But most importantly, it's about your grandmother.
09:46You girls just shouldn't walk in on folks like that.
09:50We came in through the kitchen. Rowena let us in.
09:52But what were you two just talking about?
09:55Listen, your Gran needs to get a little more rest. If you girls could come back and maybe in a
10:02little while...
10:03Gran mentioned cancer?
10:04Yeah. Does a friend of hers have cancer?
10:07Gran, are you okay?
10:08Hold on. Hold on. Slow down, y'all.
10:12You haven't talked to your mother, I take it.
10:15Why? Is mom sick?
10:16Will someone please just tell us what's going on?
10:19Just please give your mother a call and she'll be able to sort all of this out for you.
10:25I know she's anxious to talk to you both.
10:28Vernon.
10:29It's okay.
10:31They're here now.
10:34Come on, girls. Come. Sit down.
10:36I'll tell you everything.
10:48This isn't easy to say, so I know it's going to be hard to hear.
10:52But I'm going to give it to you straight because you deserve that.
10:56All right.
10:58Go ahead, Gran. We're listening.
11:00While the doctors were performing some routine tests, they discovered an anomaly, a tumor, in my breasts.
11:08I had a biopsy and I've been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.
11:14I'm sorry, you have triple cancer?
11:18I had a friend who had triple negative breast cancer.
11:22You had a friend?
11:26I know you're wondering if this is a particularly bad cancer, baby, and it is.
11:31It's very aggressive.
11:34And that's why the doctors and the doctors I have are great, by the way.
11:39They suggested a strong response beginning immediately.
11:45And today was the first step.
11:48This morning, the doctors put a port in my chest so I can start having chemotherapy.
12:01My mother will start chemo any day now.
12:05And then after that, they'll do a surgery to remove whatever's left of the tumor.
12:11I'm going to tell the girls today.
12:14Yeah.
12:15It's going to be hard on them.
12:17They love her so much.
12:18Well, so do you.
12:21And I know this is putting you through hell, too.
12:23But we both know that Anita is a fighter.
12:25She's one of the best.
12:27Yeah.
12:28And look, Dani, I am here for you, okay?
12:31For whatever you need.
12:33Well, there's another reason that I wanted to tell you before I tell the girls.
12:40There's more you need to know.
12:48I know that this is overwhelming.
12:50It certainly was for me.
12:52But there is more that I need to tell you.
12:55Hold on, Mom.
12:56I don't know about Kat, but I need another minute before you go any further.
12:59I know it's hard to comprehend, even thinking about your grandmother being ill.
13:05When did she tell you and Aunt Dani?
13:07Last night.
13:09Okay.
13:11Now we know.
13:13So we just have to remember how strong Gran is.
13:17And this cancer may be bad, very bad, but so is Gran in all the right ways.
13:22Of course she is.
13:24And do they have a second opinion?
13:25A third?
13:26How much do they know about her condition?
13:30They understand that the treatment options are limited for this type of cancer.
13:34But I want you to know that she is in excellent hands.
13:37Her team includes specialists that are leaders in their field.
13:42Right now, though, the medical consensus is moving quickly will give her the best possible chance.
13:48Are you saying this treatment is her only chance?
14:07Now I need you to hear what I have to say next very carefully.
14:16Listen, I have never faced anything like this before.
14:22But I am not going to take this lying down.
14:25I will stand up to this like all of the other challenges that life has thrown my way.
14:29And I need you to do the same.
14:32But, Gran...
14:33You have grown into such wonderful, strong young women.
14:38So I am not going to patronize you.
14:42This will be difficult.
14:44And wanting to beat it might not be enough.
14:47I don't want to hear you talk this way.
14:50Chelsea.
14:55You have a whole family who will be linking arms with you every step of the way.
15:02Just like you and Grandad used to do back in the day.
15:05That's right.
15:08Together there's nothing we can't handle.
15:15But there's more.
15:17There's another reason why I hope your mother had spoken with you before now.
15:21So that you can be prepared.
15:24Prepared?
15:26Prepared for what?
15:27But...
15:27It's called the BRCA gene.
15:30And mother has a variant that leaves her susceptible to certain types of cancer.
15:35Like this one.
15:36It can be passed down.
15:39From generation to generation.
15:42Okay, so what does that mean?
15:45It means I might have it.
15:47Nicole too.
15:49And if we do...
15:52There's a chance that...
15:56Oh Lord.
15:58I'm gonna get tested as soon as possible.
16:01And if I'm negative, the two of you can relax.
16:04The gene doesn't skip a generation.
16:06But if I'm positive...
16:10I could have it too.
16:12It's not a guarantee.
16:13But there's a distinct possibility.
16:17This isn't just about breast cancer.
16:20I need you to hear that.
16:22Even for men, this gene can raise the risk of breast, prostate, any other cancers.
16:28So this matters for you too.
16:31Right now, I care about Gran and you.
16:36Me too.
16:43I just pray that if someone has to inherit this gene, please, God, let it be me and not Nicole.
16:49She's been through so much already.
16:52No, hey, hey, hey, hey, no.
16:54There's no need to go there, okay?
16:57Look, there's a good chance that neither of you will test positive.
17:00Alright?
17:02Just hold on to that.
17:04Okay?
17:08Look, I have a favor to ask.
17:10Ask it.
17:12Let me come talk to the girls with you, okay?
17:16No doubt it'll be tough on them to hear all this and they're gonna need both of us.
17:21I was hoping you'd say that.
17:29I want you to follow your mother's lead.
17:31If she tests positive, you need to get tested right away.
17:36I only wish I had known before now so that you could have known.
17:40It's my only regret.
17:41Graham.
17:43Please.
17:45With everything you're going through right now, please don't talk like that.
17:48I agree.
17:50It sounds like you're blaming yourself for maybe possibly making us sick and that's just all kinds of wrong.
17:57If this thing, this terrible gene has found its way to me, I know one thing.
18:07I will follow the example I have my whole life.
18:11You.
18:13I will face whatever comes to me with the same courage and strength you're showing us right now.
18:22Because it's what both of you taught us.
18:25It's how you raised us.
18:27It's the example you have given us.
18:31We are depressed with everything that entails.
18:37And the only thing I care about inheriting from you is your incredible spirit.
18:51I've already made an appointment to get tested if I'm positive and that is a big if.
18:58And I'll let you know right away so that you can...
19:00Get tested.
19:02We'll be on it.
19:02Don't worry.
19:04I want you to be negative, Mom.
19:06That goes without saying.
19:08But even if you do have the gene, I won't be getting tested.
19:20Of course you'll get tested.
19:22Cancer is nothing to play around with, Kat.
19:25I'm not in denial.
19:26But a test just tells me I'm walking through a minefield.
19:30It doesn't stop the ground from blowing up.
19:33They can't change my genes, can they?
19:35You are upset about what your grandmother is facing.
19:38We all are.
19:39But this is when being thoughtful and proactive matters.
19:43If you do carry the gene variant, your doctors will have a head start.
19:47They'll know what to monitor and how often.
19:50That way if, God forbid, something does develop, you'll have a plan and you'll have a chance to make informed
19:57choices early when it can really matter.
20:01That's what I'm doing right now.
20:03I am deciding that I don't want to know.
20:06I don't want to walk around with a cloud of,
20:09Is this my last normal day before I find out I have cancer hanging over me for the rest of
20:16my life?
20:21I am so glad you told us about Gran and I am praying for her and I am sending up
20:32a prayer with all my heart that you test negative for this thing.
20:38But I intend to live my life in sunshine and not a shadow.
20:46Dammit, Kat, you can't!
20:50Let her go.
20:53She'll come around.
20:55What if she doesn't?
21:03Amen.
21:04Amen.
21:07That's probably your mother.
21:10I'll bet on it.
21:12You're right. It's mom.
21:13After the fact.
21:16You should talk to her.
21:18Well, there's no rush. We can stay here with you a little longer.
21:21Your granddad was right. I do need some rest.
21:24Then we'll go and let you do precisely that.
21:27But you know we'll be here the second that you need us, right?
21:30Of course we do.
21:33You know, I thought the Articulats reunion concert was the performance of your life.
21:39But I was wrong.
21:41You beating cancer will put that to shame.
21:44And you're absolutely going to have to give another concert when you are completely cancer-free.
21:49Thank you for your love and support and your faith.
21:56I'll show the girls out.
21:59It's okay. We're good, granddad.
22:11They are such wonderful young women.
22:14How did we get so lucky?
22:17Well, I meant to say...
22:20I'm the lucky one.
22:23And I don't see my lucky streak coming to an end anytime soon.
22:31Sweetheart?
22:36I suppose I'm finally welcome in my own living room.
22:40Yeah, sorry about asking you to leave the room before.
22:45So, now can you tell me what that was all about?
22:49Soon. It's something I need to deal with first. Then I have to head over to the office.
22:54You want to meet me there? We can go to dinner and I can tell you everything.
22:58It's just that, you know, Danny is...
23:01She's going through a lot. The whole family is.
23:04And whatever this thing is affects Naomi and Chelsea too?
23:08Since Danny was so adamant about seeing you alone, I assumed that...
23:12Again, baby, I'm sorry. Okay? It couldn't be helped.
23:19Of course.
23:21Whatever this business is, I hope it all works out.
23:27For all the duperies.
23:30Thank you for being so understanding, okay?
23:34Of course.
23:35Alright.
23:37Okay, you go. Take care of your business.
23:41Okay.
23:52Are the girls on their way?
23:54Yeah, I texted them. They should be here any minute.
23:56Listen, I'm sorry if it caused you any problems with Haley asking you to speak alone.
24:01Oh, no. Don't worry about that. I think she understands that this is something important.
24:07Why did you wait to text us?
24:09Wait, what are you talking about?
24:10We just came from the Grands.
24:12You mean...
24:13We mean that we walked in like we do every year with the balloons for the new year and they
24:18were in the middle of talking about Grant's cancer.
24:21About which we had no idea.
24:22Oh, my God. I'm so sorry.
24:24And then she told us about how she had some kind of port put into her body.
24:29And then we were two complete messes and it was the two of them that were comforting us.
24:33Why would you keep this from us? Like, how could you put us in that position?
24:36Hey, wait. Wait a second. Your mother didn't keep anything from you.
24:39She's known about this news for less than 24 hours.
24:41As soon as you knew, you should have told us.
24:43I'm sorry.
24:45I have been struggling with this since I learned about your grandmother's situation.
24:49And I needed time to figure out how to speak to both of you. I'm having a hard time too.
24:55Okay, listen. Hey, everybody take a breath.
24:58Listen, girls. You're right to be upset.
25:04Especially since it comes from your concern for your grandmother and Danny.
25:07You're right to hold off on telling them you don't just drop this kind of news in someone's lap.
25:12It's a tough situation. There's no truly right answers here.
25:16We just all have to do the best that we can.
25:20If we do it together, then we'll be fine.
25:23Okay?
25:42Is now a good time?
25:44Of course.
25:45Are you doing better? I knew something was up with you before.
25:48Actually, no. I'm not better.
25:51And I'll explain, but first, I need to ask you something.
25:56Anything.
25:57How are things between you and Kat these days?
25:59I know it was a little rough there for a while.
26:02Now, rough isn't the word for what we went through, but bit by bit we're making some headway.
26:06She even came by to see me on Christmas.
26:10Good. I'm glad to hear that. You two were so close before.
26:14Yeah, before Hurricane Dana blew into town.
26:18You were the one that Kat listened to about everything.
26:24And I really need you to get her to listen to you now.
26:29I think you need to tell me what's going on and how it affects our daughter.
26:36We have some beautiful babies in this family.
26:38Yes, indeed.
26:41I'll get it, baby.
26:49Right in.
26:50Martin.
26:54Mom told me the news.
26:57I thought she would.
26:59Thank you for coming to show your support.
27:02Did you attend the mayor's New Year's Day message this morning?
27:05I made it to the breakfast.
27:07But that's when I got the call from Mom.
27:09And I left before the program where I was supposed to speak.
27:12But, priorities.
27:15You putting family first is no surprise.
27:18But your gran has already had a pretty full day.
27:22So, go easy, okay?
27:26Do I hear my grandson's voice?
27:29Come on in here and give me a hug.
27:31And don't worry, I won't break, no matter what your granddad says.
27:36So, how's the campaign going?
27:38Um...
27:39The fundraising.
27:40Do you need donors?
27:41I didn't come here to talk about politics.
27:44Well, that's too bad.
27:45Because I'm all talked out about cancer.
27:49Politics it is.
27:51All right.
27:52Can I tell you a secret?
27:53Please, I love secrets.
27:54Come on.
27:56Everybody assumes that I model myself after this guy.
28:00And I do, don't get me wrong.
28:02But what they don't know is that I'm always packing
28:06a little bit of Anita Dupree in my hip pocket
28:08when I need to keep folks in line.
28:11Oh, please.
28:12Yes, please.
28:13My caucus leader was trying to push me around the other day.
28:16And I thought to myself, WWGD.
28:20What would Grand do?
28:23So I narrowed my eyes.
28:25I stood my ground.
28:26And I told him exactly how it was going to be.
28:29And guess what?
28:30He backed down.
28:32And that is what you have to give your cancer.
28:37That same glare.
28:39So we can continue to celebrate many more new years together.
28:50She explained to you about the gene variant?
28:53Yeah.
28:54What's it called?
28:54BRCA.
28:56And it can be passed from generation to generation.
28:59But it can't skip one.
29:01Yeah.
29:02So all you need to do for right now is wait for me to get tested.
29:06And if it comes back negative, we can all breathe a little bit easier.
29:10But if it's positive...
29:13I'll get tested right away.
29:16Me too.
29:18There's music to this father's ears.
29:22I'm glad you were here to tell us.
29:24Even though we already knew.
29:30I can't imagine what Anita's going through.
29:35Vernon too.
29:38But Nicole, just know.
29:41Whatever you need.
29:42Whatever the kids need.
29:44Even though you and I aren't together anymore, we're still family.
29:50I appreciate that.
29:54And there is something you can do.
29:59About Kat?
30:01She insists that she won't get tested even if I test positive.
30:05Hmm.
30:07Actually, I'm not surprised by that.
30:10Really?
30:12I guess that just proves you always knew her better than anyone else.
30:17Which makes you the perfect person to make her see reason.
30:23It doesn't matter who asks.
30:24She'll push back.
30:25She's an adult.
30:26We can't make that call for her.
30:29We have to, Ted.
30:31You are the only other person who knows how much we wanted her.
30:36How much we went through to have her.
30:39I won't.
30:40I can't.
30:41I can't.
30:42I can't just stand by and watch my miracle baby play games with her life.
30:47I promise you.
30:49I will be as supportive as I can to make sure she makes the right decision on her own.
30:56But frankly, I'm hoping it's not even an issue.
31:01Because you're gonna test negative.
31:14I'll take a shot of tequila.
31:16Sure thing.
31:34All right, you go on now.
31:36I know how busy you are.
31:37Yes, ma'am.
31:39Come on, son.
31:40Before she aims that glare at us.
31:49Thank you for coming.
31:50And for what you said to your grandmother.
31:53I know she appreciated it.
31:55There were times I took your support for granted.
31:59Because I was self-centered and caught up in my own world.
32:02Martin, you know you have no need to apologize.
32:05Apologies are just words.
32:07I want you to know that I am here for her.
32:10And you.
32:12Now, I want to make sure that I'm your first call if you ever feel like the walls are closing
32:18in.
32:43It's a girl, my sweet Anita.
32:46Say hello to your daughter.
32:52You have to come to Paris with me, mother.
32:55I want you there cheering when a Dupree walks the runway.
33:00It's the most prestigious psychiatric residency in the country, mother.
33:03I would have never gotten in without your support.
33:07I may be young, but I'm about to level up my dad's practice and put it on the map for
33:13real.
33:16I'm Naomi Hamilton Esquire, Grant.
33:19You have another lawyer in the family.
33:22Grant, the results are in.
33:25Grant, say hello to Congressman Martin Richardson.
33:32The depresence of style comes straight from the top.
33:35From you.
33:36Grant, you're really the reason I'm a designer.
33:47I'm a designer.
33:51Anita.
33:54I didn't know if you heard me.
33:56I heard you.
33:58I heard all of them.
34:01Them?
34:05I am so glad that you suggested that we follow tradition and...
34:08go through the photo albums.
34:11When the girls were here earlier,
34:13I was watching how they were absorbing the news.
34:17And I started to feel it.
34:20I don't understand.
34:23The wonder of this family that we created, Vernon.
34:28This incredible family.
34:30There's such strength, such love.
34:34Knowing who they are.
34:37Separately and together.
34:39It makes me think.
34:43What, love?
34:46That no matter what happens,
34:48I am at peace.
