00:00The last scene in the finale sees Buck welcoming Theo home.
00:03I'm gonna live here now?
00:06Yeah.
00:08You're welcome home, Theo.
00:11In the past, I know you've mentioned that you would like to see the sperm donor storyline return.
00:16So I'm curious, were you involved in the decision at all?
00:19And why do you think it's the right time for Buck to embark on this new chapter?
00:23Tim Minear, who writes the show, called me...
00:26I think we were shooting episode 15, and he said,
00:30I've got something for you to move Buck forward.
00:33And I was like, okay, great.
00:35Thinking, you know, is it gonna be a love interest or what?
00:38And he goes, sperm baby.
00:42But, you know, it's been a few seasons since that storyline first came around.
00:47And so it didn't immediately ring a bell what he was talking about.
00:51And I said, you know, say more.
00:54And he said, I'm gonna bring back the sperm baby.
00:57And I was like, oh, okay, cool, great.
00:59You know, it'd be nice.
01:00And Colin and Chelsea, who play Connor and Cameron, you know, I love having them on the show.
01:05So it was nice to have them back.
01:07And he said, and then I'm gonna kill them.
01:09And I said...
01:10Classic, Tim.
01:12Oh, okay.
01:13He said, I think you're gonna end up, you know, taking care of Theo in some way.
01:19Theo being the kid.
01:21And I was pretty shocked.
01:24Like, it was not something that I expected at all.
01:26A little apprehensive at first.
01:27But then as we kind of started playing through the scenes and I got to work with the kids, their
01:32twins who play Theo.
01:33Yeah.
01:34They really won me over.
01:35And, you know, I understand his vision for it now.
01:38But, you know, at first I was like, oh, wow, that's huge.
01:42Yeah.
01:42And that's a big thing to bring into his life.
01:44But, you know, I'm happy with the way it's ended up playing out.
01:48I mean, I guess it feels like a storyline that is put in and can always at any moment come
01:54back into the show.
01:55I was asked some time ago, like, is there any storyline that you would like to see come back in?
01:59I have to believe Tim just reads everything you say and is like, Oliver's a genius.
02:03I definitely don't think it's that Tim reads all of my interviews.
02:07I maybe shouldn't say this here while you ask me these questions.
02:10But, you know, sometimes you get asked these questions and you're like, I don't know.
02:13Let me pull something out of thin air.
02:15You can't do that here.
02:16No, no, these ones, deep, profound answers only.
02:19But, you know, to that question of what storyline would you like to see come back up, that's the one
02:23that came to mind.
02:24Yeah.
02:24Yeah, I don't.
02:26I used to earlier in a show, like, pitch storylines to Tim.
02:31He would never take them because, you know, that's not my job and they probably weren't great ideas.
02:37So these days I just let them do their job and, you know, they've not steered me wrong thus far.
02:42And I have always a lot of trust in them.
02:43Theo is so sweet, but we quickly learned he has a lot of energy.
02:46He's lovingly described as a heat-seeking missile.
02:49Read all the books, tried timeout, three different specialists.
02:53No one will give us a straight answer.
02:55Is this just his personality or is there some kind of diagnosis?
03:00For years, fans with ADHD have seen themselves in Buck at times.
03:05And I know you've acknowledged that representation.
03:06So I'm curious, could this potentially lead Buck to seek a diagnosis?
03:11Is that something you'd be open to exploring now that Theo's in the picture?
03:15Yeah, wow.
03:16That's really interesting.
03:17I hadn't really thought about that aspect.
03:19But if Buck ends up learning a little bit about himself through Theo, I think that will probably be dominating
03:26the storyline for Buck as we move into season 10.
03:28And I've always loved this idea that maybe Buck does have ADHD and actually that that's maybe one of his
03:35superpowers in terms of being a great first responder.
03:38And so maybe if he can, within the show, actually learn that about himself, I would love to see that.
03:43But it's funny just where you touched upon Theo being a little monster on the show.
03:49The twins are so sweet, like so sweet, that in the scene where we're having dinner and they're like throwing
03:58pizza at the parents.
04:00Destroy pizza, destroy.
04:02Oh, okay.
04:04Sometimes before they even call cut, he would run over and want to start like cleaning it off of her
04:09saying, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
04:10Like they're so sweet.
04:12But it's funny, as soon as you give them license to misbehave, you see their eyes light up.
04:16It's like, wait, I get to destroy this.
04:18And it's like, oh, okay.
04:19Yeah, there's a monster inside everyone.
04:21In episode 17, there's of course that heartbreaking scene where Connor and Cameron are recovered from the crash.
04:27And Eddie sort of realizes before Buck and tries to stop him.
04:31You need to stay back.
04:33What do you mean?
04:34Come on.
04:34No, Buck.
04:35Buck.
04:35Eddie, stop.
04:36What are you doing?
04:37Eddie, what are you doing?
04:38Come on.
04:41It was very reminiscent of Buck trying to stop Eddie from seeing Shannon back in season two.
04:47What did you make of those very poignant parallels?
04:50Yeah, I think it's set up in a way that, you know, as I say, whatever the care looks like
04:58for Buck and Theo, it's not going to be something that he tackles alone.
05:03And I think through those parallels, as you put it, that, you know, Buck is going to be going through
05:11steps here and through difficulties that Eddie has himself navigated.
05:17You know, single dad.
05:20So I think those are just tie-ins to the fact that he's going to have to be a prominent
05:26part of this story and, you know, he's going to be there for Buck.
05:28And Buck is going to, more than anyone, I would assume, lean on him because he's so directly had a
05:36similar experience.
05:37Are you excited for scenes with Theo and Christopher?
05:42Yeah.
05:43The whole family.
05:44That would be cool, actually.
05:44I'd never, it's funny because I think of the scenes going ahead where, as I say, Eddie would be involved.
05:51I haven't really thought about that.
05:52That's, that's something, yeah, because Chris will be most big brotherly to him, you know.
05:59He can do some babysitting.
06:01Yes.
06:01Because he's 15, 16 now.
06:03The perk of 911 is there's no shortage of incredible babysitters.
06:07Sure, this is very true, yeah.
06:08Yeah, I think those scenes would be so cute to watch.
06:12Buck obviously has had a rocky relationship with his own parents.
06:16What do you think he learned from them about the kind of parent that he wants to be?
06:20I think their love was always restricted and it obviously drove Buck to certain personality traits that maybe aren't always
06:30in his best interest.
06:31And I think Buck would never want to, and sometimes we do, right, you know, we pass on the bad
06:39traits that we receive down and it's until somebody makes a conscious choice to, like, break the cycle.
06:45And so, so, yeah, if he's going to step into that kind of role, I hope he would, and I
06:50think he would want to break that cycle.
06:52And, you know, not put such constraints on the way that he loves.
06:56Looking forward to season 10, what are some things you'd like to see for Buck, and is there anything you
07:00as Oliver would like to tackle as an actor?
07:03Well, if I answer this question, are you then going to say that Tim's watched this and taken my ideas?
07:07Yeah, I have no choice.
07:08The proof is there.
07:10No, the proof, I'm not going to get into it.
07:13You know, I mean, obviously there's a storyline at the end of this season that, you know, is going to
07:17lead into season 10, so I'm sure that's going to dominate.
07:20And it will be interesting to see what that kind of work-life balance is for Buck.
07:25And I think whenever you have kids around you, I think it's such a mirror.
07:34You know, you learn so much about yourself.
07:36Honestly, in these last couple of episodes, even I did about myself through working with the kids.
07:41So I think that's going to be, you know, very prominent of Buck, figuring out a lot about the person
07:51who he is through somebody else and through this mirror of a child.
07:56So, yeah, I think that will be a big part of what season 10 contains.
08:00So, yeah, I think that's going to be a big part of what season 10 contains.
08:01So, yeah, I think that's going to be a big part of what season 10 contains.
