00:00:16A few days rises before me, I am high in energy, living up to my dreams.
00:00:27I believe in fantasy, I'm in a world of magic, I feel like I could love the world, even if
00:00:38it's my one and I, I will get the most, I will keep the most I'll be, this is my
00:00:46time to shine.
00:00:54Hi honey, how's it going?
00:00:56Hey mom, do you think the sunflowers should be spread across throughout or sort of gather in the center?
00:01:03Well, given that they're sunflowers, I think front and center, let them command the attention they deserve.
00:01:14Yes, that's it. I'm gonna finish this in a minute, I just gotta write something down real quick.
00:01:18Oh okay, I'll finish her.
00:01:25Okay.
00:01:28She commanded attention in every room she...
00:01:35Hello.
00:01:38Lisa, hi. So nice to see you. What can I get started for you?
00:01:42Well, yes. I'm actually looking for someone. Might you happen to know where I could find the Ms. Sophie Wood,
00:01:51accomplished author extraordinaire?
00:01:54Hmm, I'll go check on that for you.
00:01:59Oh yes, I'm Sophie Wood, multi-hyphenate florist slash author.
00:02:04A pleasure.
00:02:06Sweetie.
00:02:07I remember when you were just a little girl, sweeping up rose petals. Now look at you.
00:02:12Oh.
00:02:14Lisa!
00:02:15Is Sophie taking care of you?
00:02:17Just popped in to shower her with praise.
00:02:19Well, good. She's her own worst critic.
00:02:23It was actually published by Tales of Ink. You know that indie publishing house just down the street?
00:02:27Well, aren't they lucky to have such talent? I'm not even exaggerating when I tell you I could not put
00:02:34it down.
00:02:34In fact, I'm grabbing this extra copy for my book swap. The more readers the better, right?
00:02:40Thank you so much. That means a lot. And please enjoy On The House.
00:02:44Oh, that's so sweet.
00:02:50And this is On The House, just for you.
00:02:52Oh.
00:02:53Have a good one, ladies. And congrats again, doll. Amazing work.
00:02:57Thanks, Lisa.
00:03:01So, the bestseller list comes out today.
00:03:04So, when do you keep track of that?
00:03:05Since I had my own horse in the race.
00:03:09I think I have to win a few more races before I make it to the derby.
00:03:15Number three!
00:03:16Wait, what?
00:03:19Number three!
00:03:20Look right here in black and white!
00:03:27This can't be real.
00:03:29You did it!
00:03:31What?
00:03:31Oh my gosh! This is huge!
00:03:35Oh, it's Janice.
00:03:37Take it, take it.
00:03:38Hi, Janice.
00:03:40Yeah, I'm just seeing it now.
00:03:43Yes, I can come in. I can come in right now.
00:03:45Sure.
00:03:46Okay, yeah, I'll see you soon.
00:03:47Bye.
00:03:50Que forma?
00:03:51Oh, oh, my God!
00:03:58Oh my gosh.
00:04:20can you believe it honestly I'm struggling with the fact that I'm even
00:04:26awake right now I mean of course it shouldn't be a surprise based on your
00:04:30talent alone you wrote an absolutely incredible story but 20 years in this
00:04:35industry and I've never seen a splash like this for an indie author let alone
00:04:38a first-timer which is exactly why I'm convinced my alarm is gonna go off any
00:04:43second well don't wake up just yet guess who I got a call from this morning I

00:06:51know I'm actually surprised you two haven't met yet Daniel's another client at
00:06:55the agency and he's working on a web series with the rebel lifestyles if
00:06:59you've heard of them oh yeah yeah I've watched a lot of that content um
00:07:03congrats thanks and congratulations on the book amazing news thank you so Sophie for
00:07:10book tours we always hire a public speaking coach to help authors prepare and since Daniel
00:07:16is a thought leader on the subject and a client at the agency I figured he'd be a
00:07:21natural fit to help with the book tour oh that won't be necessary honestly I'm
00:07:26totally good to go consider my bags packed no offense and thank you for the offer yeah no
00:07:34problem are you sure Sophie speaking prep is pretty standard my clients always rave about how
00:07:40helpful it is oh I'm sure it is and and Daniel's been working hard on his web series scripts so
00:07:46I
00:07:46was thinking maybe in return for his help with the coaching you could help him with
00:07:50some editing well actually the scripts there oh yeah I'll totally help with the editing anytime no
00:07:55thank you but yeah my friend is reviewing them for me he's a real stickler for grammar and words
00:08:07well it's uh just about one o'clock so I better go check to see if the reporters are here

00:08:49everyone Sophie Sophie everyone hi there all right if everyone can take a seat we can get started
00:08:58thank you all so much for taking the time to stop by I think I speak for both Sophie and
00:09:04myself when I
00:09:04say that we are just blown away by the massive early success of walking on air though rare for a
00:09:11new
00:09:11author I can't say I'm too surprised ever since the first time I read her work I knew that Sophie
00:09:17had a
00:09:17gift but enough for me Sophie I'll let you go ahead and introduce yourself hi everyone I'm Sophie oh whoops
00:09:32Sophie Wood Sophie Wood I'm the author of the novel
00:09:43maybe you can start by telling us a bit about your writing process yeah uh right um yeah I've never
00:09:51really um done this before uh so to start I um I I talk to my characters not in the
00:10:04mirror that would be
00:10:04weird uh I uh I like to talk to my character on the um page the page I like to
00:10:14talk to my character
00:10:15page you know I've noticed while working with Sophie that her talent lies in her ability to be
00:10:23diligent without letting the rigidity of deadlines or deliverables squash her creativity Sophie is an
00:10:31everyday writer who will produce draft after draft until she can feel it okay this is her I'm just gonna
00:10:39grab okay there okay well uh uh thank you all for coming I'll uh see you at the media gala
00:10:52in a few weeks
00:11:06I'm sorry for springing that on you no no I'm sorry I didn't bring my a game not a problem
00:11:11but can
00:11:12we uh reconvene tomorrow I want to chat a bit more about the book tour since it uh it is
00:11:18coming up fast
00:11:19absolutely same time if you can yes great see you soon yeah
00:11:42what was that
00:11:57hey mom when was the last time you wanted the ferns
00:12:02oh last week sometime something like that I think okay they actually weren't due fur watering until this
00:12:07week so I'm gonna make a note for another watering in two weeks okay these ones are very fussy and
00:12:12they
00:12:12looked a bit drowned okay well the plants can wait until tomorrow to be fussed over why don't you call
00:12:19it quits and bask in the glory of your big day oh look look look great reads magazine
00:12:29wow yeah that was fast
00:12:34oh your father would be so happy he always knew his little girl would make it someday
00:12:42i have a funny feeling he pulled a couple strings from me up there
00:12:47i'm gonna get a hard copy of this tomorrow and frame it oh nice maybe you can put it over
00:12:53my sixth
00:12:54grade school photo oh oh look there are uh reader reviews at the bottom of this article
00:13:01my favorite book of the year oh this one has every color of heart emoji at the end of it
00:13:08i love that you know what emojis are oh yeah i text
00:13:30i love that you know what you're trying to do
00:13:40it's
00:14:22So, what do you think?
00:14:27Uh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's obvious you've done a lot of work on this, and I'm not trying to
00:14:34be harsh in any way, but these episodes seem a little dry.
00:14:40Yeah, I felt that while I was writing them.
00:14:42Right? They're just like missing the sparkle that makes you good at what you do.
00:14:47Well, Tom, you think I sparkle, man?
00:14:50Not in these scripts, you don't.
00:14:51Yeah, okay. Point taken.
00:14:53No, but seriously, man, I mean, I know how challenging the writing process can be, and if I could write
00:14:57these things for you, I would, but you're the expert they're paying the big bucks for.
00:15:01And I'm just the young and dashingly handsome producer trying to get his own career off the ground.
00:15:10Well, questionable.
00:15:14Okay, but hear me out for a second. This whole series is based on public speaking, right? And I believe
00:15:21that the real sparkle behind any great speaker is the ability to embrace spontaneity.
00:15:25Okay, so what if we just send them an outline of all the key points I plan to touch on,
00:15:31and then just tell them that part of my process is simply being in the moment when the camera's on?
00:15:37Okay, believe me, I would love to save us both that kind of time. And sure, you can embrace spontaneity
00:15:41all you want once we get into filming.
00:15:43Great!
00:15:45But...
00:15:46Revel specifically asked us for full episode scripts before we can even move into production.
00:15:56I'll see if I can squeeze in another pass in the next week, if I can fit it in.
00:16:01The deadline's Friday. Remember?
00:16:05Yikes.
00:16:07Friday's not going fast?
00:16:09Yeah. It's right after Thursday.
00:16:12Hey.
00:16:38I'm sorry, Janice. I know I messed up yesterday, but no need to apologize.
00:16:42To start, let's just zoom out a bit and agree that no one really likes public speaking.
00:16:48Okay?
00:16:50No offense.
00:16:52None taken. I know for a while that enjoying it is a little bizarre.
00:16:56I actually enjoy it, too.
00:16:59Look, I was off yesterday. Okay? I know that. But it was a fluke, and it won't happen again. I
00:17:06promise.
00:17:07You have a lot riding on this interview, Sophie.
00:17:10And if yesterday was intimidating, just imagine being in the hot seat with Olivia Winters.
00:17:17Janice, I can assure you, that's exactly what I need. Assurance.
00:17:23It's my job to set you up for success, and I can't just sit back and let you miss out
00:17:28on this book deal with Grapevine.
00:17:29I don't say that to scare you, but these big publishers want to work with writers who are not only
00:17:35talented, but also capable of upholding a certain public prestige that goes along with their brand.
00:17:41And if Meredith McEvins decides to pull the plug on the deal because she feels you aren't ready, it'll be
00:17:46really hard for us to bounce back.
00:17:48I totally understand. But I think I'm fully capable of...
00:17:53I know you are capable.
00:17:55But in order to prevent any jitters from getting in the way, I'm going to insist that you work with
00:18:01Daniel to prepare.
00:18:04Just think of it as taking out an insurance policy on your dream career.
00:18:11I was thinking maybe we can go for a business lunch. Talk to the coaching, see where you're at.
00:18:17Sure. A business lunch. That's a great idea.
00:18:38Sophie! Hi!
00:18:40Hey!
00:18:44Sorry about that. I didn't see you at first. I thought I would just, uh, run a quick errand.
00:18:50All good. Thank you for meeting with me. I'm excited to dive into the coaching with you.
00:18:55Yeah! Listen, Daniel, I don't want to underplay your qualifications. I looked you up, by the way. I hope that's
00:19:02not weird.
00:19:03As long as it isn't weird if I looked you up, too.
00:19:05The fact that it's not weird makes it weird, you know?
00:19:08Ha! Sign of the times, for sure.
00:19:10Mm-hmm. But I have to say, I was really impressed by your work. I'm sure it works wonders for
00:19:16people who need it.
00:19:17Well, that's the goal.
00:19:19Yeah. I just, um, I just don't think I'm one of those people. You know? And I don't want to
00:19:25take time from your busy schedule and your scripts. I'm still available for edits if you need me.
00:19:29Yeah, thanks. Maybe down the line.
00:19:32Sure thing.
00:19:35Anyway, um, I know we just met, but do I really seem like that shy of a person to you?
00:19:40No, not at all. But effective public speaking doesn't always hinge on whether a person is shy or not.
00:19:48I mean, there have been plenty of outgoing people throughout history that have been terrible public
00:19:52speakers, even presidents. So, how about this? I could do a quick assessment right here, see where
00:19:58you're at. And if I agree that you don't need the coaching, then I'll tell Janice you have my official
00:20:04stamp of approval.
00:20:05Hmm. Deal.
00:20:08Cool. You're gonna walk us through a quick visualization.
00:20:11Shoot! I left my crystals at home.
00:20:15It'll only work if you take it seriously. You did say you wanted to be off the hook, didn't you?
00:20:22Okay. All right. We'll start by having you exhale, close your eyes, place your hands on my palms.
00:20:33Okay. We'll use the interview as the example in this scenario.
00:20:39Picture yourself at pen and paper bookstore. There's Olivia Winters getting ready to introduce
00:20:45you to a full audience. We look out, and there's Meredith McEmmons, taking a seat in the middle row.
00:20:51No, no, no, no, no, no. Nope. I'm terrified, okay? I despise public speaking.
00:20:57Hey, let me help you. I use the skill-based five-step method. The interview's in 10 days, right?
00:21:04Don't remind me. The coaching won't take too long. If you give it a try and decide it's not for
00:21:09you,
00:21:10we'll part ways. No hard feelings. Well, if you help me pull this thing off,
00:21:14you might just be an expert in magic by the time we're done.
00:21:35Hey, hey. Welcome. I didn't know this place was here. It's beautiful.
00:21:40Isn't it? My friend Tom and I use it as a workspace all the time. And it's entirely donation-based
00:21:45and
00:21:45maintained by the artists that use it. Very cool. And, um, why exactly am I wearing athletic gear?
00:21:53Please tell me we're not running. Don't worry. Running is not on the docket.
00:21:57Good. I used to run every day in college, but these days I prefer a brisk walk.
00:22:01Yeah, I saw that. Two-time track champion at Knowles College.
00:22:05How did you know? Right. Well, it was actually cross-country and I came in third both years,
00:22:12but I like your spin on it. Well, your time as a runner might actually help you with what we're
00:22:16working on today. Step one in the coaching program is breath work. Did you know that if you can control
00:22:23your breath, you can actually trick your nervous system into calmness? I did not.
00:22:27Mm-hmm. Makes sense. Public speaking and forgetting how to breathe seemed to go hand in hand for me.
00:22:33You are not alone. It's very common.
00:22:38Oh, wow.
00:22:41This is lovely. Hey, brother. How's it going? All right.
00:22:51Yoga. I've been meaning to get into yoga. So if I pull a hammy on the first try, you're going
00:22:58to have to
00:22:59carry me down four flights of stairs. The risk is low, but I got your back either way.
00:23:07Okay. We're going to start with some warm-ups. Big breath in.
00:23:12And melt all the way down. Come on. What? You look like one of those inflatable tube men at a
00:23:21car
00:23:21dealership. Yeah? Yeah. You ever notice that tube man seems like a pretty carefree guy? He's not
00:23:28out there worrying about what anyone else thinks. He sure isn't. Right. Let him inspire you. Commit to
00:23:34your inner tube man. The singular most important thing you can do when trying to control your breath
00:23:49is to breathe from your diaphragm. Hmm. I've heard some of my favorite pop stars talk about that.
00:23:55Funny. I had you pegged as more of a jazz fan. Because I'm a novelist?
00:24:00Yeah. Which is a pretty bad case of stereotyping when I say it out loud. And you're probably into
00:24:07house music? Because I have a lot of energy and essentially make a living as a glorified
00:24:12hype man? Uh-huh. Wow. Well, I'll have you know, yeah, that's exactly right. Yeah.
00:24:19Okay, DJ Daniel. Are you going to teach me how to breathe or have I lost you to your inner
00:24:23dance floor?
00:24:23Wait for it. Here comes the beat drop. Boom.
00:24:33All right. So, one hand on your chest, the other on your stomach. And exhale fully. And then simply
00:24:41let the air re-enter your body. It should feel like you have a balloon inflating on the knee of
00:24:45your ribs.
00:24:46In through your nose. And out. In through your nose. And out.
00:24:58So, if I practice real hard, what's the likelihood that I end up like one of these pop stars?
00:25:02Well, I don't know. I'd see a few notes.
00:25:05Yes. I walked right into that one, didn't I? Sure did.
00:25:19Oh, my mom needs me to cover at the flower shop for a few hours. Can we pick back up
00:25:25tomorrow?
00:25:26Sorry, she's not always so good with schedules. No worries. We're just about done for today.
00:25:30Why don't I walk you? You can wrap up quickly at the shop. I have to head that direction anyway.
00:25:35You don't mind? Nope. I love a brisk walk myself.
00:25:44There you go. Nice to see you.
00:25:50Thank you. Hey, mom. Oh, this is Daniel. The one I was telling you about. Yes, Daniel. Hi. I'm Evelyn.
00:25:58Nice to meet you. And I'm so sorry to interrupt your session, but I completely forgot about an
00:26:03appointment I have this afternoon. No trouble at all. It's a pleasure to meet you, Evelyn.
00:26:07Yeah. Yeah. And, oh, thanks so much, Sophie. And I'll see you later tonight.
00:26:12Yeah. Funny how you forgot about your appointment, but you didn't forget about pasta night, huh?
00:26:17Priorities. Priorities.
00:26:25Your mom seems awesome. Must have been a lot of fun growing up.
00:26:29Oh, yeah. Never a dull moment.
00:26:32So, step two is memorization. And it comes with some homework.
00:26:39Romeo and Juliet? These two are nothing but trouble.
00:26:42Whenever you have to speak in front of an audience, it can always be helpful to memorize
00:26:45some sort of text. A safety net to fall back on when the nerves take over.
00:26:49So if I freak out in front of Olivia and Meredith, I'm supposed to start reciting a Shakespearean
00:26:54monologue? I would pay big bucks to see that, but no. The monologue will be for step five,
00:26:59the trial run. In a few days, you'll recite the monologue in front of a group of friends,
00:27:03incorporating all the new skills you've learned. This story stresses me out.
00:27:07Not a big romantic. I have no problem with romance. I just don't believe that love should be as
00:27:12hard as it's made out to be in stories. I get that. Then again, love can be pretty hard in
00:27:18real
00:27:18life. Well, not if you keep your head on straight. Yeah, but who's ever kept their head on straight
00:27:23when they've fallen in love? Me? I've never totally lost my head for someone. Oh. Is it possible
00:27:29you've never actually been in love? Hello. Let me know if you need any help with anything.
00:27:38Okay. Okay, Mr. Speech and Debate Co-Captain. Oh, wow. You did a deep dive, huh? I'm thorough.
00:27:45Now, before we even get to the trial run, we have to tackle step three, facing your fears.
00:27:51Okay. We could do that, or we could, I don't know, not do that.
00:27:56All right. So I'm going to have you write down some of your other fears, and I'm going to set
00:28:00a 20-second timer so that you can go with your gut instinct and not overthink it.
00:28:04Okay, but what if- Go. Oh, okay. Um.
00:28:14And time.
00:28:18One sec. Interesting.
00:28:23Yeah, we can definitely knock off a few of these tomorrow.
00:28:26You in? Do I have a choice? Oh, we always have a choice to be chicken.
00:28:30You did not just chicken me. Oh, I did.
00:28:33You let me know the time and place, and I'll be there.
00:28:35You got it.
00:28:43How'd it go with the master of the stage today?
00:28:46He seemed like a nice guy.
00:28:48Well, he's, uh, a character.
00:28:51I still think it might be a waste of time, but he did share with me a couple tips to
00:28:55keep in my back pocket.
00:28:56Well, that's great. Here, let me taste this.
00:29:04What do you think?
00:29:05Mmm.
00:29:06You measured everything, right?
00:29:08Yes. I followed the recipe exactly.
00:29:10Yeah. Well, this recipe is more of a suggestion than a rule, right?
00:29:15I mean, a little dash of this, a pinch of that.
00:29:20What? Just go with the flow.
00:29:26Cheers.
00:29:27Cheers.
00:29:27Cheers.
00:29:27Cheers.
00:29:31Cheers.
00:29:56Hi.
00:29:57Did you really have to pick the tallest building in the neighborhood?
00:30:01Couldn't we have started with something smaller, like climb a tree, or check out the fire
00:30:07escape of a two-story building, or see a movie that takes place on a plane?
00:30:11Well, I do have to admit, I did have a double motive for picking this place.
00:30:15My dad actually brought me here for the first time when I was a kid.
00:30:19I come back once a year to get a picture from the top for him.
00:30:22Aww.
00:30:23Where does he live?
00:30:24He's upstate, but he's a city guy at heart.
00:30:26This doesn't make it out this way as much as he'd like to anymore.
00:30:33Well, if I have to do it for Dad, I guess I have to do it for Dad.
00:30:37Chickens first?
00:30:38Hey.
00:30:50My legs are jello.
00:30:51My legs are jello.
00:30:52Come on.
00:30:53I mean, I feel brave.
00:30:55We can go now.
00:30:55You got this.
00:30:56Come on.
00:30:56We're just going to head over to the ledge, check out the view, take a picture, and then
00:31:00we're going to head back down.
00:31:01Oh.
00:31:01Okay.
00:31:01I can't look down.
00:31:02I can't look until we get there, so just make sure I don't bump in anything.
00:31:04Almost there.
00:31:05You got it.
00:31:05Okay.
00:31:06You got this.
00:31:06Come on.
00:31:07All right.
00:31:08All right.
00:31:09Almost there.
00:31:09Okay.
00:31:10And the last few steps are all you.
00:31:12Oh, come on.
00:31:13Almost there.
00:31:14What?
00:31:14You got it.
00:31:15Come on.
00:31:18There you go.
00:31:20I'm going to count it down, and when you look up, you're going to see the city like
00:31:23you've never seen it before.
00:31:24I promise.
00:31:27Okay.
00:31:28Go, go, go.
00:31:29All right.
00:31:30Three, two, one.
00:31:35What?
00:31:43This is like a totally different city from here.
00:31:45It's incredible, right?
00:31:50I think that's my first apartment over there.
00:31:54My roommate was so sweet, but so messy.
00:32:00My high school was just past that intersection.
00:32:04There was a pizza shop and a bakery right across from each other.
00:32:07Best smelling corner in the city.
00:32:09Oh, yeah.
00:32:10I recognize that area.
00:32:12My dad's auto shop was there.
00:32:14Oh, yeah.
00:32:15I know that place.
00:32:16Does he still work there?
00:32:16Yeah.
00:32:17Oh, no.
00:32:19He passed away when I was nine.
00:32:21Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
00:32:23Thanks.
00:32:25He was the best.
00:32:29It's getting windy up here.
00:32:31I should take that picture of you.
00:32:33Yes.
00:32:37Okay.
00:32:42Got it.
00:32:44These look great.
00:32:46One more for good luck?
00:32:48Yeah.
00:32:49Come in.
00:32:50Okay.
00:32:52Oh.
00:32:53All right, all right.
00:32:54You're good inside.
00:32:55Ready?
00:33:03Got it.
00:33:04Good?
00:33:04Yeah.
00:33:05Would you like to go back down to the ground?
00:33:06Yes, please.
00:33:07Let's go.
00:33:07Great.
00:33:22I can't.
00:33:22You do it.
00:33:23Come on, buddy.
00:33:24You'll be fine.
00:33:26Just hit send.
00:33:27Do you really think the change has helped?
00:33:29You know what?
00:33:29I do.
00:33:30I mean, I'm sure we'll get some notes back, but that's to be expected.
00:33:34We can handle notes.
00:33:36You're right.
00:33:37And a deadline's a deadline, right?
00:33:38There's not much else we can do.
00:33:40Okay.
00:33:41Here we go.
00:33:44Done.
00:33:44Attaboy.
00:33:46And now we wait.
00:33:49And now we wait.
00:33:51Just hurry up and wait.
00:34:05So, now that you've conquered your fear of heights, would you water the plants on the
00:34:12top shelf up there?
00:34:14Very clever segue.
00:34:16But I actually have to leave in a minute to go meet Daniel at the park.
00:34:18Oh!
00:34:20What's on the docket for you two today?
00:34:22Another fear challenge.
00:34:24I just don't know the details yet.
00:34:27Of all the fears I listed, I didn't think you were going to be able to get your hands on
00:34:30rollerblades so quickly.
00:34:32Seems like skating is really making a comeback.
00:34:34A few of the bike rental shops in the city have expanded their horizons into skate rentals.
00:34:39Goes hand in hand with the 90s fashion.
00:34:43Speaking of the 90s, that was probably the last time I put on a pair with these bad boys.
00:34:47Ooh, me too.
00:34:49Your horror story first and then mine?
00:34:52Well, I used to be pretty good until I took a huge fall and had to get knee surgery.
00:34:57Oh.
00:34:58I can spare you the show and tell, unless...
00:35:00I'm good.
00:35:02Are you squeamish?
00:35:04Maybe a little squeamish.
00:35:06A little, just don't want to jinx it.
00:35:07Fair.
00:35:09Your turn.
00:35:09Well, join me up here and I will tell you a story of young heartbreak that would make Romeo and
00:35:15Juliet look like child's play.
00:35:20I bet it all started when you lost your head for a girl.
00:35:23Big time.
00:35:24It was the sixth grade and I was madly in love with my girlfriend, Colleen Shine.
00:35:30Let me guess, her smile could light up a room.
00:35:33You know it.
00:35:35We dated for three months, which means we talk like once a month during lunch period.
00:35:41See, that's why I waited to have my first boyfriend until I was a grown, mature eighth grader.
00:35:47We talked every day, if you count passing notes in class as talking.
00:35:52So, it was the end of the year field trip and we were at Skate Town in this big roller
00:35:57rink in Jersey.
00:35:58Lights come down, disco ball starts to spin and my favorite R&B song comes on.
00:36:04Uh oh.
00:36:05I think I know where this is going.
00:36:07Yeah.
00:36:07I look over at Colleen and she's slow skating with Steve Sherman.
00:36:12No.
00:36:14Not Steve Sherman.
00:36:15Steve Sherman.
00:36:17I was so crushed I never hit the rink again after that.
00:36:20You win.
00:36:21Your emotional scar is much more gnarly than my surgery scar.
00:36:28Are you good?
00:36:30I'm good.
00:36:31I'm good.
00:36:32So, how did it end with Pen Pal Boy?
00:36:36Well, he said he wanted to take things off the page and meet face to face.
00:36:39I didn't feel ready, so I dumped him.
00:36:42With a haiku.
00:36:45Sheesh.
00:36:46Ruthless with a pen, even as a youth.
00:37:00You know, that wasn't that bad.
00:37:03I might have to stick with it for the cardio.
00:37:04Yeah, that was a lot more fun than I remember.
00:37:08So, what next?
00:37:09Matching tattoos?
00:37:10A couple of fears conquered?
00:37:12We even had time to stop and reward ourselves.
00:37:14Cheers to that.
00:37:16If we break now, we can head back to the loft space and run through step four.
00:37:21Which is?
00:37:29Body language.
00:37:31The goal here is to use your physicality to send a signal of confidence, not only to the audience, but
00:37:36to your own brain.
00:37:38Make eye contact, especially if you know someone in the audience.
00:37:42You could even make eye contact with Meredith if you're feeling brave.
00:37:45Okay, baby steps.
00:37:48Let's see. Let me try.
00:37:56That's it.
00:37:57Chin up, shoulders back.
00:38:02That is certainly shoulders back and chin up.
00:38:08Okay, are you taking this seriously? Do you want to learn?
00:38:11Yes, obviously.
00:38:12All right.
00:38:13I'm going to come show you.
00:38:14I know how to walk.
00:38:16I can see that.
00:38:17Come.
00:38:18Ready?
00:38:19Okay.
00:38:20So, feet, shoulders, chin, and we walk.
00:38:25That's the one.
00:38:27And as corny as it might sound.
00:38:31Smile.
00:38:33There it is.
00:38:43Don't tell me. Don't tell me.
00:38:45Should I fall, let it be with grace and...
00:38:52Grace and...
00:38:53levity?
00:38:54Levity of spirit. Shoot. Okay, let's start again.
00:38:57But you were almost done. Can't we just pick it up from here?
00:39:01No, I have to get it right. I have to get it perfect.
00:39:03I'm no improviser when the heat is on.
00:39:05Won't you have to improvise the answers during the interview?
00:39:07I mean, you don't always know what questions they're going to ask.
00:39:11Regardless, I'm not there yet.
00:39:12The point is to get this monologue memorized and down pat
00:39:15so I can work on the other skills I've learned with Daniel.
00:39:17Do you think you might be giving this silly fear of yours a little too much power?
00:39:22Mom, I get what you're saying, but it doesn't feel so silly when I'm up there in fight-or-flight
00:39:27mode.
00:39:27No. No, I know. I don't mean to downplay it. It's just that...
00:39:32I think if you just went into it...
00:39:36freely, without all this build-up, you might find some...
00:39:40levity of spirit.
00:39:43I wish I could.
00:39:45You can head home if you're tired, but I'm going to stay here and get this perfect.
00:39:51You really are your father's daughter, aren't you?
00:39:55I've always said the two of you were sent to teach me a thing or two about diligence.
00:40:03So, from the top...
00:40:06Okay.
00:40:08Should I fall? Let it be with grace and levity of spirit.
00:40:11There you go.
00:40:22Thank you guys for coming.
00:40:23I'm a little nervous, but...
00:40:25Hey, sorry for the delay. Tom was supposed to be here with the speaker and Mike already.
00:40:29Oh, no! I guess we should reschedule. How about, uh, never?
00:40:33Hmm.
00:40:35No? No.
00:40:36Hey, guys! Okay.
00:40:38There he is.
00:40:39Great.
00:40:40Sorry I'm late.
00:40:42Hi. You must be Sophie.
00:40:44I'm Tom, Daniel's friend and personal tech department.
00:40:47I paid him to add in the friend bit.
00:40:49Well, it's nice to meet you, Tom.
00:40:51Definitely.
00:40:51Thanks for coming through.
00:40:52Yeah, absolutely, man.
00:40:53Feel free to stick around and help us fill in this little crowd we got here.
00:40:56Will do. Let me, uh, just get all set up and I'll be back out here.
00:41:04Okay.
00:41:04Okay.
00:41:07Okay. Testing, testing.
00:41:09Ooh.
00:41:10Whoops.
00:41:11Sorry about that, everyone, but that's why we test.
00:41:15Testing, testing, testing.
00:41:17Sounds great.
00:41:19Whenever you're ready.
00:41:21All yours.
00:41:23Okay.
00:41:24Okay.
00:41:34Okay.
00:41:35Okay.
00:41:35No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:41:41I'm just kidding.
00:41:46Testing.
00:41:48Testing.
00:41:51Testing.
00:41:52This guy is amazing.
00:41:54Okay.
00:41:56I can't...
00:41:57I can't.
00:41:58I can't.
00:41:58I can't.
00:41:59I'm sorry.
00:41:59I'm sorry, I...
00:42:07Hey, folks.
00:42:08Just wanted to let everyone know about the food trucks
00:42:10that you'll find if you walk down that way.
00:42:14Yep, just keep walking that way
00:42:16for New York's best food on wheels.
00:42:18Not here. Over there.
00:42:26Sorry, man. Thanks.
00:42:44Just doesn't make any sense.
00:42:47Last time, I couldn't stop babbling,
00:42:50and this time...
00:42:52I forgot how to speak entirely.
00:42:55How am I supposed to fix a problem
00:42:56if my reaction is different every time?
00:43:02I know you have it in you.
00:43:04You worked through the coaching steps just as well,
00:43:06if not better, than some of my strongest clients.
00:43:10And? I still failed.
00:43:12Why don't we try again later?
00:43:14Oh, no. I'm just bent.
00:43:16I get that.
00:43:17No, you don't.
00:43:19Sorry?
00:43:20No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap.
00:43:23I just...
00:43:24There's no way that you could possibly understand
00:43:26what I'm going through,
00:43:27because you've always been a natural.
00:43:29Public speaking has always come naturally to me, sure,
00:43:32but I've got my own fear.
00:43:34A big one for me, actually?
00:43:37Writing.
00:43:39Yeah.
00:43:41I know.
00:43:43What? You do?
00:43:44Mm-hmm.
00:43:45I recognize that look in your eyes
00:43:47every time someone mentions your scripts.
00:43:50Some might even call it the chicken stare.
00:43:56So you caught me, huh?
00:43:58I sure did.
00:44:01Seriously, though,
00:44:02let me know when you get those notes back in your scripts.
00:44:06I'd love to return the favor and help out.
00:44:10And I promise to be as patient with you
00:44:12as you have been with me.
00:44:16Thank you. Really.
00:44:19And I will definitely take you up on that when I hear back.
00:44:22Cool.
00:44:24But getting back to you,
00:44:27I think we can try a few more creative ways
00:44:29to tackle this fear that's still blocking you.
00:44:31If you'll keep me on, that is.
00:44:33Oh, you're not jumping ship now.
00:44:36Good.
00:44:37Wouldn't want to.
00:44:39They're facing our fears.
00:44:43Let's go.
00:44:53I know exactly when everything went downhill.
00:44:56Fourth grade science fair.
00:44:58And it was my turn to present my diorama.
00:45:02Oh, I forgot about those.
00:45:04You make them out of shoe boxes, right?
00:45:06Yep.
00:45:07Mine was a deciduous forest scene.
00:45:09I used the trimmings from the plants at my mom's shop to make the trees.
00:45:17It had been about a month since my dad passed.
00:45:20And I guess I was determined to prove to everyone that I was back to being a normal kid.
00:45:26Whatever that meant.
00:45:27Sure.
00:45:28It's a lot for you to be going through at such a young age.
00:45:32So there I was at the front of the room, ready to go.
00:45:36And all of a sudden my mind went blank.
00:45:40I started getting really hot.
00:45:42And the walls seemed like they were closing in on me.
00:45:46And the next thing I know, I'm sobbing uncontrollably.
00:45:51And the teachers had to rush me to the bathroom.
00:45:54Poor little Sophie.
00:45:55Exactly.
00:45:56That's the part that still sticks with me.
00:45:59Those teachers looking at me with such deep pity.
00:46:04I felt pathetic.
00:46:07And now that I say it out loud, maybe that's the fear.
00:46:11It's not so much the act of speaking in front of everyone, but the idea that I could be perceived
00:46:18as weak.
00:46:22Yeah, that's deep.
00:46:27Well, the good news, you can never look weak because you're not.
00:46:32You're talented.
00:46:35Articulate.
00:46:36Self-assured.
00:46:37Beautiful.
00:46:38Beautiful, huh?
00:46:41Sorry.
00:46:42I mean...
00:46:45Hey, Janice.
00:46:50Which podcast is that again?
00:46:55Sure.
00:46:56Yeah, I think I can make that work.
00:47:06Okay, great.
00:47:08Yeah, I'll be there.
00:47:11Thanks, Janice.
00:47:14I'm gonna be on the Tailored to the Page podcast tomorrow at 9am.
00:47:17Help.
00:47:18Is that the one where they try and imagine what fashion designers the characters in the books are wearing?
00:47:22That's one segment, yes.
00:47:24My protagonist is a tightrope walker.
00:47:27I don't know any famous leotard designers.
00:47:30Is that even a thing?
00:47:32This is actually the perfect Norma.
00:47:34You get to work on your interview skills without actually having a crowd.
00:47:38Less pressure.
00:47:41Aren't you proud of me?
00:47:43Look at me.
00:47:44Living life on the edge.
00:47:46All the way up here.
00:47:47All the way...
00:47:48It's the fourth floor.
00:47:51Still counts.
00:47:52I'm facing my fears.
00:47:57Actually, you know what?
00:47:58There's one more fear I want to try to conquer before the podcast.
00:48:01It wasn't on your list.
00:48:03Then how do you know it's a fear?
00:48:05I thought I'd have a curveball challenge handy the other day, so...
00:48:08I contacted a local expert in all things Sophie.
00:48:13Who?
00:48:21Tom?
00:48:22Hey.
00:48:22Not who I was referring to, but...
00:48:25Hey, Tom?
00:48:25Uh, sorry to interrupt, but, um...
00:48:29Can I steel you for a bit to talk about the project?
00:48:31Something sort of just, um, came up.
00:48:35Uh...
00:48:35Yeah.
00:48:36Definitely.
00:48:38Hey, if you're free labor, can I meet you at the flower shop?
00:48:41Oh, Mom's the expert.
00:48:43Of course.
00:48:45Uh, yeah.
00:48:45I'll be at the flower shop this evening to help her close up.
00:48:48Perfect.
00:48:48See you then.
00:48:49Sounds good.
00:48:50Nice to see you, Tom.
00:48:51Likewise.
00:48:52Take care, Sophie.
00:48:56Rebel hated the script, didn't they?
00:48:57Let's just say they didn't land.
00:48:59Well, at all.
00:49:02Uh...
00:49:03I'm really sorry, Tom.
00:49:05I didn't think we were this far off the mark.
00:49:06I know.
00:49:06Me either.
00:49:08Luckily, they're gonna give us another shot.
00:49:10All we gotta do is go in there and give them something totally fresh.
00:49:16Yeah.
00:49:16Yeah.
00:49:17Great.
00:49:17Let's...
00:49:18Let's do it.
00:49:19Alright, great.
00:49:20Uh, let's get started with, uh...
00:49:22Trying to focus on nailing down a brand new concept for the pilot episode.
00:49:27That's a good idea.
00:49:28Yeah, if we could sell them on whatever new direction that we're heading in, then...
00:49:31We can build from there.
00:49:33Definitely.
00:49:36Brand new concept.
00:49:41Hey.
00:49:42What about Sophie?
00:49:44Yeah, she actually offered to help with the edits, which...
00:49:47Will be great.
00:49:48No, no, no, no.
00:49:49I mean, I think she would be a really great case study to focus on for the pilot episode.
00:49:54Honestly, I don't know about that, Tom.
00:49:56Hear me out, buddy.
00:49:57Okay.
00:49:58Rebel said they wanted something more tangible.
00:50:00Less hypothetical, right?
00:50:02Yeah, but I think Sophie's real-life story about overcoming her own stage fright
00:50:07could be really inspiring.
00:50:08Plus, she's a rising name.
00:50:10So by the time the series comes out, audiences will already be familiar with her.
00:50:14It's kind of a win-win on the publicity front.
00:50:20Yeah, but...
00:50:21If we were gonna use her as a subject in an episode, I would've wanted to ask at the start
00:50:24of the coaching.
00:50:25Alright?
00:50:26Asking midway through feels...
00:50:28Shifty.
00:50:29And I don't want her thinking that I have some ulterior motive for helping her.
00:50:33No, no, no.
00:50:33I get that.
00:50:35But...
00:50:36You do take notes on all your clients, right?
00:50:40I assume you have some notes on Sophie?
00:50:43Yes, for my own use.
00:50:46Okay.
00:50:46How about this?
00:50:47We play around with sketching out an episode about Sophie based on the notes you already have.
00:50:52And then if she nails the interview and you think it's appropriate, we can pitch the concept to her at
00:50:57that point.
00:51:03Fine.
00:51:04Fine.
00:51:05But...
00:51:05If she isn't absolutely thrilled with how this interview goes, we scrap this idea and we're back to square one.
00:51:11Totally.
00:51:12Scrap it.
00:51:12But for now, let's just see what notes you already have.
00:51:15Maybe we can get a rough draft going.
00:51:17It's worth a shot.
00:51:20It's worth a shot.
00:51:21Producers.
00:51:34Really?
00:51:36Mm-hmm.
00:51:36You told him I'm afraid of small spaces?
00:51:38Well, I admit it was a bit selfish on my part.
00:51:42But, um...
00:51:43Well, look.
00:51:44The closet is due for a reorganization.
00:51:46And I just thought it could be maybe your last project in the shop before you become rich and famous.
00:51:52All right.
00:51:53Let's not get too ahead of ourselves.
00:51:55Just speaking it into existence.
00:52:01Oh, and, um, if you two get locked in there, just be sure to scream real loud.
00:52:06Not helping.
00:52:10See?
00:52:10I'm perfectly fine.
00:52:11Wait, what if we get...
00:52:12Trapped.
00:52:15We could either walk out...
00:52:18Or we could scream for Evelyn, which would be my vote.
00:52:21Please don't get her going.
00:52:25Here we go.
00:52:26Just like everything else, start with the breath.
00:52:33Instead of focusing on the size of space, try focusing on what's inside the space.
00:52:38Sweet aromas, beautiful flowers.
00:52:42You ready?
00:52:44Four.
00:52:49This thing on?
00:52:51Welcome to the Inside Floristry Podcast.
00:52:54I'm your host, Daniel Burke.
00:52:56And today I'm joined by a very special guest.
00:52:59Best-selling author, aspiring daredevil, and master florist, Sophie Wood.
00:53:04How's it going, Sophie?
00:53:06Well, I'm currently cooped up in a closet with a man who's imagining things.
00:53:11But other than that, I'm hanging in there.
00:53:13Little imagination never hurt anyone.
00:53:15In fact, our listeners are going to use their imaginations right now.
00:53:19For those of you who can't see me, which is everyone, I am currently selecting a bunch of flowers and
00:53:27forming a small bouquet.
00:53:29In a moment, Sophie is going to tell us a little bit about each flower.
00:53:35And she's going to rate my bouquet on a scale of one to ten.
00:53:38Here you are, my lady.
00:53:39Oh, why, thank you, kind sir. They're absolutely lovely.
00:53:49Oh, sorry, kids. The customer just called with a last-minute order.
00:53:53Oh, Daniel, you're tall.
00:53:55Would you mind reaching up into the corner and getting that planter for me?
00:53:59Sure thing.
00:54:05Lovely, thank you.
00:54:10It wasn't so bad, was it?
00:54:12A bouquet?
00:54:14Yeah, I'd give it a solid eight out of ten.
00:54:16Not bad for a rookie.
00:54:18I'll give you a fifteen out of ten for enduring a whole five minutes with a podcaster in a cramped
00:54:22space.
00:54:23Now you've got to do tomorrow's wake-up-and-repeat.
00:54:25It'll be a piece of cake.
00:54:26You know what? Maybe you're right.
00:54:28There you go.
00:54:30Right on, baby.
00:54:33Yeah, here you go.
00:54:34This will ensure you both get a decent night's sleep.
00:54:37Just put it under your pillow.
00:54:39Will do, thank you.
00:54:41I'll see you tomorrow around 8.45?
00:54:43Yeah, I'll be there at 8.30, but no rush.
00:54:45And, uh, text me if you want coffee.
00:54:47It's a pleasure seeing you, Evelyn.
00:54:48You too, hun. See you soon.
00:54:51Yeah, looks like the two of you are getting along very well.
00:54:55Yeah, he's been, uh, he's been great, actually.
00:55:01I just hope it all works out.
00:55:04You know, the tour and the interview and everything.
00:55:07Everything.
00:55:08Ahem.
00:55:09Well, I have a funny feeling it'll all work out just fine.
00:55:24That came fast.
00:55:26Uh, I'll be right back, Mom.
00:55:27Come on.
00:55:29Come on.
00:55:30Come on.
00:55:33Daniel!
00:55:35Hey!
00:55:36Did I forget something?
00:55:37No, but I ordered this for you and it just came in.
00:55:40Me?
00:55:41Yes.
00:55:42This is one of my favorite writing journals.
00:55:45It has a daily prompt on each page and it's what I always use whenever I'm going through writer's block.
00:55:50It helps get the creative juices flowing.
00:55:55Which is more romantic, sunrise or sunset and why?
00:56:00I guess I'd have to say sunset.
00:56:02Oh, no, no.
00:56:03Gotta write it down.
00:56:04Right.
00:56:05I guess I'll have to noodle on this one when I get home then.
00:56:11Thank you, Sophie.
00:56:12This was really thoughtful.
00:56:15It's the least I could do.
00:56:17Get home safe, okay?
00:56:19You too.
00:56:20Goodnight.
00:56:51Okay.
00:56:58Morning.
00:56:59Sorry.
00:57:00Sorry.
00:57:01I didn't want to disturb your reading.
00:57:03Don't worry.
00:57:04I'll get you back one of these days when you at least expect it.
00:57:06I'm sure you will.
00:57:08That's how you feel it.
00:57:09Ready?
00:57:11I'm good.
00:57:13I think.
00:57:13You're good.
00:57:14I know.
00:57:19Sophie!
00:57:20Oh, it is so nice to meet you.
00:57:22Georgia, it's a pleasure.
00:57:23Please, call me Gigi.
00:57:24This is my friend, Daniel.
00:57:26Hi.
00:57:26Daniel, nice to meet you.
00:57:27Likewise.
00:57:28Alright.
00:57:28Right this way.
00:57:29Okay.
00:57:35Alright, so we're gonna have you over here.
00:57:37Okay.
00:57:41Thank you so much for coming in last minute.
00:57:43Oh, of course.
00:57:44Big fan of the show.
00:57:45Oh, I'm a big fan of the book.
00:57:48Seriously, I finished it all in one day.
00:57:49Really?
00:57:50Mm-hmm.
00:57:50It's amazing.
00:57:51It was.
00:57:52Seriously, such a treat.
00:57:54Oh, I almost forgot about our lightning round questions for later.
00:57:59Uh, lightning round?
00:58:00I don't remember that being part of the segment of the episodes I studied.
00:58:04I mean, listen to.
00:58:06Oh, well, you're gonna be the very first guest we try this with.
00:58:09The producers just thought it would be a really fun way to wrap up the show.
00:58:11Oh, um, is there any sort of, uh, hint as to the type of questions in this lightning round?
00:58:18Well, that would be cheating, but, um, I promise you they're all really fun.
00:58:21So just don't even worry about it.
00:58:23Yeah, I'm sure.
00:58:24Mm-hmm.
00:58:25Okay, so in just a couple moments here, we will be good to go.
00:58:30Alrighty.
00:58:31You ready?
00:58:32Yeah.
00:58:33Yep.
00:58:33Oh my gosh, do you need some water?
00:58:35I should have missed.
00:58:35Oh, no, no, no.
00:58:36I'm okay.
00:58:37Trust me.
00:58:40Hydration is key.
00:58:41You would not believe how much these mics will pick up on a scratchy voice.
00:58:45Scratchy voice, head cold.
00:58:47I swear, the more recording I do, the more I feel like these mics are just a window to the
00:58:51soul.
00:58:53Uh, wow.
00:58:54That's, uh...
00:58:56So, when I press this button here, the recording will start.
00:58:59Are you ready?
00:59:01Ready.
00:59:06Hello, all you bookworm fashionistas.
00:59:09I am Georgia Marks, and this is Tailored to the Page.
00:59:13Our guest today is an icon in the making.
00:59:17Not only is her very first novel, Walking on Air, an instant bestseller, but you will also
00:59:24have to believe me when I tell you her style is immaculate.
00:59:30Welcome, Sophie Wood, and thank you for bringing your book and your look today.
00:59:36Hi.
00:59:37Thanks for...
00:59:38Thanks for having me.
00:59:40Okay, so we will get to talking about your incredible novel in just a moment.
00:59:44But first, I must know.
00:59:47Where did you get this jacket?
00:59:49It is so sleek.
00:59:51All of you listeners, don't worry.
00:59:52I will post a photo on my IG.
00:59:54Oh.
00:59:55Uh, I got it some...
00:59:57I think I got it online, actually.
01:00:01Um...
01:00:11Are you okay?
01:00:14Can we stop?
01:00:17Is everything okay?
01:00:19Oh, yeah.
01:00:21Um...
01:00:21Sorry, I'm actually...
01:00:22I think I...
01:00:23I actually might be coming down with something.
01:00:25Oh, no!
01:00:26Yeah, I woke up today feeling a little blah, but I wanted to power through.
01:00:30Um...
01:00:31But I don't want to leave you with a...
01:00:32with a bad recording.
01:00:33Is there any chance that I could reschedule once I'm feeling better?
01:00:37Of course.
01:00:37Don't even worry about it.
01:00:39Let me grab you a ginger ale.
01:00:49Oh, okay.
01:00:50You're welcome.
01:00:52All right.
01:00:53Um...
01:00:54I will walk you out.
01:01:13Um...
01:01:14Please, don't apologize.
01:01:15Seriously.
01:01:15Just rest up.
01:01:16All right.
01:01:21What happened?
01:01:22I'll tell you later.
01:01:41So I'm guessing you're not actually...
01:01:45But that microphone up there saw directly into my soul and it wasn't pretty.
01:01:49Huh?
01:01:51Can we go back to the loft?
01:01:53Maybe you can try to hypnotize me.
01:01:54Whatever we can do to fix my brain in the next 48 hours.
01:01:58My expert advice?
01:02:00Write this off as a bump in the road.
01:02:02And try and relax for the next few days.
01:02:05Good one.
01:02:06Okay, I know.
01:02:07You're still gonna practice and stew over it up until the big events.
01:02:09So...
01:02:11How about we pencil in a mandatory dinner break?
01:02:14Tonight, for a little rest and recovery.
01:02:17Coach's orders.
01:02:22Guess I do need to eat at some point.
01:02:42Let me guess.
01:02:43Dear Diary.
01:02:45Daniel's running late and I can't wait to tease him about it.
01:02:48It's more like, Dear Diary.
01:02:50Remind me to ask Daniel if he knows any body doubles that can stand in for me at the interview.
01:02:55We have tried a lot of creative techniques, but that would definitely push us in a bold new direction.
01:03:04Cheers.
01:03:05Cheers.
01:03:11So?
01:03:13What are you really writing in there?
01:03:15Just some notes for my next novel.
01:03:18Already on to the next one.
01:03:21Manifesting that three book deal.
01:03:23The truth is, I'd still be working on my next novel even if I knew I'd never get paid again.
01:03:30Why do you write?
01:03:34Well, for one thing, I love the comfort of knowing that a book has a solid beginning, middle and end.
01:03:40Whereas real life, a bit more unpredictable.
01:03:44Very true indeed.
01:03:46Right?
01:03:47One moment you're quietly drawing up plots and characters between flower orders and the next you're going on tour.
01:03:56But I think more than anything, writing is like breathing to me.
01:04:02Like it allows me to tap into this power that doesn't exist for me in the real world.
01:04:06That's exactly how I feel on stage.
01:04:09Like, tuning it all the way in or something.
01:04:11Yes.
01:04:13And I think I want to pay it forward.
01:04:16There were certain books and stories that stitched me back together when I was going through some of my darkest
01:04:23hours.
01:04:24And the thought of being able to touch even just one person in that same way is what keeps me
01:04:31going.
01:04:35Well, consider me one touched reader among many.
01:04:40You read my book?
01:04:41I did.
01:04:42I did.
01:04:43Full disclosure, I started it with the goal of trying to get some clues into your psyche.
01:04:47Oh, and what'd you think?
01:04:48What's the verdict?
01:04:50The only concrete conclusion that I could come up with?
01:04:53The world means your voice and your story, Sophie.
01:04:57Oh, that's very sweet.
01:04:58No, no, I'm not saying that to be sweet.
01:05:02What I read in your book are the words of someone who believes in hope.
01:05:08Gravery and tenacity.
01:05:11And wouldn't it be a shame for that same person to let anything stun her into silence?
01:05:16Much less a little stage fright.
01:05:20I'm aware of the brutal irony, yes.
01:05:25Why don't you try thinking of this book tour as just another way to share your words with the world?
01:05:31Because what you have to say matters, Sophie.
01:05:34And nothing can take that from you.
01:05:50Well, you certainly had a day for the books, I'll give you that.
01:05:54That is so true.
01:05:59I love this song.
01:06:00Such a classic.
01:06:08Shall we?
01:06:29Wow.
01:06:31Pulling out all the big moves.
01:06:32Feeling inspired, what can I say?
01:06:39Thank you, Daniel.
01:06:42For everything.
01:06:44And thank you.
01:06:45For taking the chance and trusting me.
01:06:49Well, I can't really take all the credit for that.
01:06:53Janice did have to force me into it.
01:06:58And I'm glad she did.
01:07:08This song, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about.
01:07:12We're going to have to agree to disagree on that one.
01:07:17I like that move.
01:07:18What was that?
01:07:18Oh, yes, yes.
01:07:19It's my specialty.
01:07:20Oh, yeah?
01:07:21That's your signature move?
01:07:22It's the clutch one.
01:07:22It's the clutch one.
01:07:23It's the clutch one.
01:07:25It's the clutch one.
01:07:26It's the clutch one.
01:07:28It's the clutch one.
01:07:29Okay, my ride should be here in two minutes.
01:07:31I meant to ask you, have you heard back on those scripts yet?
01:07:34Yeah, we are back at square one, unfortunately.
01:07:39Oh, no.
01:07:40I'm so sorry.
01:07:41Well, why don't you send me what you have now, and I'll see if I can help come up with
01:07:44some fresh story ideas.
01:07:46Yeah, I was thinking I'd send you a few examples after your interview is out of the way.
01:07:49Oh, no, just go ahead and send them tonight.
01:07:51I mean, I'll be up practicing anyway, and I'm sure a distraction will come in handy at some point.
01:07:55What about getting some rest?
01:07:57Who needs rest?
01:08:00That's me.
01:08:01It's just around the corner there.
01:08:03Oh, here, here, you take this.
01:08:05What are you going to do?
01:08:06I will be fine.
01:08:07Are you sure?
01:08:08I will be fine, I'm sure.
01:08:09Yeah, yeah.
01:08:09Well, thank you.
01:08:10Alright.
01:08:10Sophie, go to bed.
01:08:12Yeah, yeah, I will.
01:08:22That's a great question, Olivia.
01:08:23Uh, no.
01:08:25Don't, don't say that.
01:08:26Just answer the question.
01:08:29Start over.
01:08:31Well, of course, I've always dreamt of this kind of response, and, you know.
01:08:37Don't.
01:08:56Don't go anywhere.
01:09:10That's a great question.
01:09:12I kind of love you.
01:09:12Come here.
01:09:14Okay, that's a great question.
01:09:14Me from there.
01:09:15Come here.
01:09:16I love you.
01:09:16You know, my story too.
01:09:17I love you too.
01:09:18I love you too.
01:09:18Don't go anywhere.
01:09:19I love you too.
01:09:20I love you too.
01:09:24You know what?
01:09:31I don't know.
01:10:06I don't know.
01:10:29I don't know.
01:10:43Sophie?
01:10:45It's Daniel.
01:10:47I come bearing coffees and a good luck gift.
01:10:54Um, now's not really a good time.
01:10:56Oh, you okay?
01:10:57I thought we were meeting at the loft at our usual times.
01:11:01Did you just wake up?
01:11:08Guilty as charged.
01:11:10Anything else you want to take note of?
01:11:13Is everything okay?
01:11:15Okay.
01:11:17So, tell me.
01:11:20What's your final hypothesis?
01:11:22Will I get through the interview tomorrow?
01:11:24Or will the most complex case you've ever encountered end in total disaster?
01:11:31Hey, Sophie, I-
01:11:32Didn't mean to send me the episode you were writing about me behind my back?
01:11:35Yeah.
01:11:36I figured.
01:11:39It is not what it looks like.
01:11:41We just thought that we could work-
01:11:42I didn't want your help to begin with.
01:11:43And yet, somehow, here we are.
01:11:47Was this your plan the whole time?
01:11:49To treat me like some sort of lab rat?
01:11:51No.
01:11:51No, it's not that at all.
01:11:52Okay?
01:11:53Tom just thought that we-
01:11:53You know what the worst part of it is?
01:11:55I was actually starting to believe that maybe I could do it.
01:12:00Maybe I could just go out there and forget what anyone thinks.
01:12:04You can and you will.
01:12:06Look, I promise that I can explain-
01:12:07I'm sorry.
01:12:08I just don't have time for this right now.
01:12:10Sophie, wait.
01:12:11I can explain.
01:12:17Um, I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, but your services will no longer be needed.
01:12:23I guess you'll have to find a new muse.
01:12:26Fine, but if I can leave you with just one last piece of advice.
01:12:30I've had my fill-on advice.
01:12:32Thanks.
01:12:48Step out of your own way.
01:12:52Might be surprised by what you find.
01:13:04Homemade lunch has arrived!
01:13:08Or, ooh.
01:13:10Should I say brunch?
01:13:13A girl spends one day in her PJs and everyone gets on her case.
01:13:17Hey, hey.
01:13:17I didn't say it wasn't a cute look, did I?
01:13:21How's it going, honey?
01:13:23Just about as well as it looks.
01:13:26Looks like maybe it's time to tap out and go with the flow.
01:13:30Mom, I keep telling you-
01:13:32I know it's a cliché.
01:13:33It's not that it's cliché.
01:13:35It's that it doesn't work for me the way it works for you.
01:13:38I didn't inherit your carefree, Jean.
01:13:41Believe me, I wish I did.
01:13:43Right.
01:13:44So then your life could just be as easy breezy as mine is?
01:13:48Mm-hmm.
01:13:48Okay, no.
01:13:49I'm sorry.
01:13:50I shouldn't have said that.
01:13:51I didn't mean it.
01:13:52I know your life hasn't been easy for you.
01:13:54Not at all.
01:13:58Well, I know sometimes even if you do go with the flow, it doesn't mean you'll never hit choppy waters.
01:14:05Oh.
01:14:06I'll definitely be filing today under choppy.
01:14:09Hm?
01:14:09First I blow up at Daniel, next I'm being testy with you.
01:14:14Not my best work.
01:14:16Hi, what happened with Daniel?
01:14:18Turns out he's writing an episode about me for his web series.
01:14:21And apparently I'm the most complex client he's ever encountered.
01:14:26Can you believe that?
01:14:28Well, actually, yeah.
01:14:30What?
01:14:32Look, the guy spent days cooking up unique and, okay, sometimes strange ways to help you overcome a major fear
01:14:41that's holding you back.
01:14:43So, yeah, I'd say that's pretty...
01:14:46Complex?
01:14:47Mm-hmm.
01:14:47Fine, but he could have at least told me about it first or asked for my permission to be in
01:14:52the episode.
01:14:53Why so sneaky?
01:14:54Yeah, that is odd.
01:14:56Did he say why he never told you?
01:14:58No.
01:14:58Mm-hmm.
01:14:59We didn't get to that.
01:15:03I guess I didn't let him get to that.
01:15:07Well, maybe your paths will cross again after this storm subsides and then you can get to the bottom of
01:15:16what his true intentions were.
01:15:18Maybe.
01:15:19Hmm.
01:15:20But no matter what happens in the future, just trust yourself, okay?
01:15:28You know why?
01:15:30Why?
01:15:31Because the flow rewards those who are tough enough to hang in there, even in the toughest currents.
01:15:41So, do yourself a favor and get a grip, will ya?
01:15:49I'm trying.
01:16:07Okay, decision time.
01:16:09Should we take a taxi, walk, or the train to Nate's party?
01:16:13Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna go.
01:16:19And, I am sorry to spring this on you now, but that Sophie episode is officially off the table.
01:16:26No.
01:16:27No, no, no.
01:16:28What happened?
01:16:30Still trying to figure that one out.
01:16:32Oh.
01:16:33You finally asked her out and she turned you down?
01:16:37Man, I really wish you'd waited until after we found out about the episode.
01:16:41What? No.
01:16:42Why would you think I was gonna ask her out?
01:16:43Hmm.
01:16:44Where would I get a wild idea like that from?
01:16:51Okay, it may have crossed my mind a time or two, but our professional relationship has been my top priority
01:16:56since day one.
01:16:57Oh, yeah.
01:16:57Of course.
01:16:58Totally.
01:16:58I thought it matters now anyway, I'm pretty sure she hates me.
01:17:02Yeah, I don't know about that.
01:17:04Okay, hate might be a strong word.
01:17:18Yes, you forgot your hot plate.
01:17:19And yes, I washed it.
01:17:22Oh.
01:17:24I thought you were my mom.
01:17:26Well, I do hope to be as cool as her one day.
01:17:30Yeah, for the record, I'm going to bed soon.
01:17:33So.
01:17:34Yeah, no, no, I won't be long.
01:17:35I just, uh, really still wanted to give you this.
01:17:40Thanks.
01:17:42And to tell you that I'm sorry.
01:17:44Look, I was never going to produce anything without getting your permission.
01:17:48Tom and I were just brainstorming some ideas and we thought that your story or even exaggerated version of your
01:17:55story could be a really interesting one to tell.
01:18:00I bet it would.
01:18:01I should have told you as soon as it came up, but I was so close to your interview, I
01:18:06didn't want to psych you out.
01:18:09Plan, obviously, backfired.
01:18:12Just a little bit.
01:18:15But, um, thank you for this.
01:18:23Really, I, uh, I should really take your advice and get some rest.
01:18:30Long day tomorrow, obviously.
01:18:33Absolutely.
01:18:34Uh, good luck tomorrow, Sophie.
01:18:39Good night.
01:18:40Good night.
01:19:02And then we did.
01:19:04Good night.
01:19:06Good night.
01:19:10Good night.
01:19:13Good night.
01:19:15Let's go.
01:20:08Oh, okay.
01:20:09Get a grip, won't you?
01:20:11Okay.
01:20:13Shoulders back.
01:20:15Up, hands, loose.
01:20:18Okay.
01:20:20What are you doing?
01:20:22Okay.
01:20:31Hey, did we interrupt?
01:20:33Janice!
01:20:35Hi.
01:20:36What am I interrupting?
01:20:38It looks fun.
01:20:39Oh, I was just doing the tube man.
01:20:42Just something silly to calm the nerves.
01:20:43Daniel taught me, actually.
01:20:45Oh, yes.
01:20:46Isn't he wonderful?
01:20:48He is.
01:20:49He really is.
01:20:52I'm sure you're ready to knock this thing out of the park.
01:20:54As ready as I'll ever be.
01:20:56Great.
01:20:57Well, I'm going to check in with the media partners.
01:20:58You come find me if you need me.
01:21:00Yeah.
01:21:01Sounds good.
01:21:02Oh, uh, wait.
01:21:03Um, is Olivia here yet?
01:21:05I would really love to meet her before we start.
01:21:06Yeah, so here's the thing.
01:21:08Olivia's big on meeting guests for the first time during the interview.
01:21:12Oh.
01:21:14Uh, cool.
01:21:15Great.
01:21:15Yeah.
01:21:16Something about it feeling more fresh that way.
01:21:19Right.
01:21:20Yeah.
01:21:21Totally.
01:21:21Totally fine.
01:21:22Great.
01:21:24Yeah.
01:21:26Totally fine to meet my childhood icon in front of an audience.
01:21:29Yeah.
01:21:42May I sit beside you, please?
01:21:45Oh, thanks.
01:22:05Ah, the book.
01:22:10Oh, thanks.
01:22:16Good evening.
01:22:18Can you hear me in the back there?
01:22:20Well, thank you everyone for joining us tonight.
01:22:23I am thrilled to be here to discuss walking on air.
01:22:28Everyone, please give a warm welcome to Sophie Wood.
01:22:37Such a treat to meet you.
01:22:42Well, let's get right into it, shall we?
01:22:45Yes.
01:22:46Sorry.
01:22:47Oh, no worries.
01:22:49So, Sophie, tell us how you heard the good news about your bestseller.
01:22:57Better?
01:22:59Okay.
01:23:00So, yeah, I woke up in the morning, obviously, and I read it in the paper.
01:23:09We still get the paper at my mom's flower shop.
01:23:12It's my day job.
01:23:15And, uh, so, yeah, that's where I was.
01:23:18Well, that's a good segue to my next question.
01:23:22It is?
01:23:23Yes.
01:23:24They say write what you know.
01:23:27So, my question is, are you a pro on the tightrope when you're not writing?
01:23:32And if so, can you demonstrate for us after this?
01:23:35Yes.
01:23:35Yes.
01:23:36Wow.
01:23:37A curveball and a challenge.
01:23:40Um, well, I hate to disappoint you, but I'm actually terrified of heights.
01:23:44But I did visit a very tall building this week, so, um, I just might be getting closer to giving
01:23:52it a try.
01:23:52Oh, well, don't ask me to join you.
01:23:55I am a big fan of gravity.
01:23:59Tell us about Sasha, your protagonist.
01:24:02Where did the inspiration for her character come from?
01:24:06Right.
01:24:07So, my process is very much about research.
01:24:10And when I first read about the first female tightrope walker to ever, um, to ever, uh,
01:24:21sorry, yes, the main character was inspired by a real-life circus artist, but as far as
01:24:27her inner dialogue, her perseverance, her drive, her unwavering belief to do whatever
01:24:33she set her mind to, all of that was inspired by my mom, Evelyn.
01:24:41She raised me as a single mom in the city with very few resources after we lost my dad.
01:24:46And as a child, I remember thinking that some kind of luck or magic was at play.
01:24:53Somehow we always got by.
01:24:56Somehow we still managed to laugh and smell the roses.
01:25:01Somehow we healed.
01:25:04But much like tightrope walking, there's nothing magical about it.
01:25:09She got us both through by taking one step at a time.
01:25:14Balancing both strength and softness.
01:25:17Never once letting us fall.
01:25:21Is mom here?
01:25:23Oh, yes.
01:25:24She's right there, actually.
01:25:26Let's give mom a round of applause.
01:25:39It was so great to have you on the show.
01:25:41Thanks again.
01:25:46Oh, I cannot believe this whole time you thought of me as a svelte and nimble acrobat.
01:25:54Even the bravest of daredevils have nothing on you.
01:25:58Well, you hung on tight up there.
01:26:02Can I cut in here?
01:26:03Oh, yes.
01:26:07Meredith McEvins from Grapevine.
01:26:09So nice to meet you.
01:26:10Miss McEvins, it's an honor.
01:26:12Thank you for coming.
01:26:13Oh, of course.
01:26:14I just talked to Janice and confirmed our dinner.
01:26:16If that still works, I'd love to discuss what's next for you.
01:26:20Yes.
01:26:21I can't wait to chat.
01:26:22Great.
01:26:27Wow.
01:26:29Whew.
01:26:34Amazing job up there, Sophie.
01:26:37Thank you so much.
01:26:38Oh, I mean, I knew you'd get through it, but that was beyond.
01:26:41The chemistry with Olivia, unreal.
01:26:44You think?
01:26:44Oh, it was fantastic.
01:26:45And the book deal's all but signed.
01:26:48Don't be surprised if Meredith draws up the contract over appetizers.
01:26:53Wow.
01:26:54And thanks again for letting me connect you with Daniel.
01:26:56Oh, thank you for the recommendation.
01:26:59I think it's safe to say it definitely helps.
01:27:02Oh, definitely.
01:27:03I couldn't get over his face when he was watching you up there just now.
01:27:06He looked so happy for you.
01:27:09Really?
01:27:10Mm-hmm.
01:27:12Is he still here?
01:27:13Mm-hmm.
01:27:16Right over there.
01:27:33You did it!
01:27:34Did I?
01:27:35You were incredible.
01:27:3720 out of 10.
01:27:39Listen, I'm sorry I didn't hear you out yesterday.
01:27:41I'm scared.
01:27:42Nah, I shouldn't have started anything without your permission.
01:27:44I was just...
01:27:46inspired.
01:27:48Let's make the episode.
01:27:49Together.
01:27:51Are you sure?
01:27:52Really, it's fine if we just keep everything between us.
01:27:55I thought you said I had a story to share with the world.
01:27:58Wouldn't be very honest if I held back the messy parts, would it?
01:28:02I can't argue there.
01:28:04Good.
01:28:05Looking forward to our next project.
01:28:07I wonder what other fears we'll conquer along the way.
01:28:14You know, there's actually something I've been a little scared to do for a while now.
01:28:20You need to be shy.
01:28:24Yeah.
01:28:40You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:41You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:41You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:41You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:42You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:42You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:43You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:43You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:44You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:44You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:47You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
01:28:48You know, there's a lot of people who are in the world.
