00:00Conor's story, for me, I used to have a very similar shirt.
00:08Melissa, thank you so much for joining me to talk all things Met Gala fashion.
00:13I think we need to be having like Zoom breakfast or something after all the shows.
00:20It's so true.
00:21And I feel like the Met is basically the Oscars, the Grammys, the Globes, the Emmys all rolled
00:26into one because the whole thing is fashion, which means it's very much in our wheelhouse.
00:32To start, what were your thoughts on this year's theme and dress code and how do you think
00:38guests did with it?
00:40I think it was a difficult theme to interpret.
00:50It leaned into, in a lot of ways, all those sort of Grecian dresses.
00:56It was confusing.
00:57So we saw a lot of what I would just call traditional pretty red carpet dresses because it was all
01:05very draping and romantic and Grecian and a lot of that flowy.
01:13So I think it was very hard to really figure out, you know, I looked at Margot Robbie and
01:21I'm like, oh my God, she looks amazing.
01:23But that dress would have looked amazing on any red carpet, not specifically the Met.
01:28And a lot of people sort of fell into that.
01:32Yeah, definitely.
01:33There were a lot of safe and pretty dresses.
01:36It was a hard theme because you could lean into the art side of it or the body side of
01:42it.
01:42And I feel like we saw people who fell into both of those categories.
01:46Absolutely.
01:47Who completely nailed the assignment in your eyes?
01:52Kylie Jenner.
01:53Yeah.
01:54She was really good.
01:55Schiaparelli.
01:58The body, molded bodysuit, even with the nipples, the dress, Schiaparelli, half on,
02:05half off.
02:06Is she pulling it up?
02:07Is she taking it off?
02:09Nailed the assignment.
02:12And so did Kendall.
02:14They both looked amazing.
02:16In Zach Posen.
02:17It was skin tight.
02:19It was that bone color.
02:20We had, again, the boob falling open with another nipple, which makes us wonder if Skims
02:26is pushing the nipple bra that they made.
02:28That was my first thought was how was Skims and Kim involved in these two looks?
02:32And I feel like they must have gotten ready together because they were very cohesive despite
02:36being different designers.
02:37Well, I think the whole family organizes.
02:40Even if they're getting ready separately, they know the cohesive look.
02:44But those were two of the best.
02:47And I think, really, Kylie nailed it last night.
02:52How do you feel like Kim compared to her sisters?
02:58Well, first of all, in my, since we're off the Kentucky Derby, in my Kardashian-Jenner
03:04sweepstakes, it went Kylie, Kendall, Kris, and then Kim.
03:11Kind of says it all.
03:12But no, I, again, it was a whole body plate, body armor.
03:18Kim's had been made by an artist.
03:20She had a separate designer do the skirt.
03:25I got it.
03:28I just thought other people did the look better.
03:31I agree.
03:32And those boobs, like, hey, kids, be careful.
03:34Someone's going to lose an eye.
03:36You know what I mean?
03:38Okay.
03:38Other favorites.
03:40Other favorites.
03:41I love Doja Cat.
03:44Okay.
03:45Tell me why.
03:46Eve, San Loren.
03:48First of all, the dress was latex.
03:51Talk about art.
03:52Trying to drape latex like that so it moves.
03:57It was completely monochromatic.
04:00The shoes were painted to match her.
04:03The hair, the makeup.
04:04It was one.
04:05And then the artistry of the draping and then finding out it's a plastic.
04:10Yeah.
04:11Was really, again, art.
04:14Mm-hmm.
04:15And I just, and it was unexpected.
04:18Yeah, definitely.
04:19And it was one of my first wows.
04:21It was art and it was an interesting textile.
04:25You know, it was that kind of thing.
04:27The material kind of made the moment.
04:29Yeah.
04:30Yesterday, or last night, I read something.
04:33I think it was in Vanity Fair about Lauren Sanchez.
04:37Oh, yes.
04:38The John Singer sergeant of it all.
04:40Yes.
04:40So you read it too.
04:41That it's supposed to be a nod to Madame X.
04:46Yeah.
04:47Now, I don't know who decided this.
04:51If this was planned, Lauren's very smart.
04:54It was genius.
04:56Or is it just happenstance?
05:00Totally.
05:00But it kind of goes, it's kind of a wink and a nod.
05:02No, absolutely.
05:04This very scandalous painting that had to be touched up because the jeweled strap falling
05:10off the shoulder was just too risque, too provocative for the time.
05:15And she, of course, had the strap falling down on her Schiaparelli dress in a year where
05:20her co-chairing or being an honorary co-chair is so controversial.
05:25Yeah.
05:25I actually, I saw a lot of hate for her look online, but I thought it was really well executed.
05:34Like, I, you know, I kind of like that she didn't go for major volume, a major, you know,
05:39like, she didn't want to pull focus, I feel like, maybe.
05:44I think she played it smart.
05:45Yes.
05:46But we had a number of people who, as I said, came as themselves.
05:49Mm-hmm.
05:50Stevie Nicks came as Stevie Nicks.
05:52Yes, correct.
05:53Cher came as Cher.
05:54Mm-hmm.
05:55Madonna came as Madonna.
05:58For sure.
05:58With the crazy boat and the horn and calling the sirens.
06:02Madonna came as Madonna.
06:03I was going to say, who else did I love?
06:05Sabrina Carpenter.
06:06Me too.
06:07One of my absolute favorites.
06:08I thought it was so clever.
06:10And again, got the memo.
06:13Those are film strips.
06:14She was doing a nod to Audrey Hepburn.
06:17Mm-hmm.
06:17It was Dior.
06:19And the film strips are actually negatives of the movie Sabrina.
06:24Sabrina doing Sabrina.
06:26Yeah.
06:27But I thought, again, using a type of fabric, textile, whatever you want to call it, that
06:33is not traditional.
06:35Mm-hmm.
06:35And the creation of that was amazing.
06:40If you really look into it, there's not a bump.
06:43There's not a crease.
06:44There's...
06:44It was brilliant.
06:46Yeah.
06:47Really spectacular.
06:48Looked perfectly tailored.
06:50And the inspiration was really clever, I thought.
06:54And then we have the oh my God moments.
06:57Tell me.
06:58I wonder if they're the same between us.
07:01Janelle Monae.
07:04Yeah.
07:05And Christian Siriano.
07:07It looked like they walked around the workroom and just slapped s*** on her.
07:12Like, give me the moss out of the plant.
07:15Does anyone have any phone chargers?
07:18Or, you know, let's throw some stuff on the boobs.
07:22Like, it looked like she was trying out to be one of the characters in Wicked.
07:26Oh, gosh.
07:27Yeah.
07:27I kept thinking.
07:28It's like your kid's art project and you go, honey, that's great.
07:30Let's put it on the refrigerator.
07:33As Tim Gunn used to say on Project Broadway, it's a lot of look.
07:37Yes.
07:38It's a lot of look.
07:40And we expect so much from her.
07:43Yeah, I agree.
07:44She always goes over the top.
07:45But this time over the top was just a miss.
07:48Cardi B.
07:50Yeah.
07:50Marc Jacobs in Teston.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Was it intestines?
07:54Were those boobs on the shoulders?
07:55I don't know.
07:56That's all I could think about.
07:57But, boy, I mean, it just was unattractive.
08:02I just, yeah, it was giving the substance a little bit.
08:05The final scene of the substance was all I could think about with the, like, possible shoulder teats.
08:11The actual most frightening was Sam Smith, who I have dubbed the Grim Geisha.
08:19It's like the Geisha of death.
08:20If you saw that sitting at the end of your bed, you'd be like, wow, the Grim Reaper seems to
08:28be really well-dressed this year.
08:30But literally all I could think about was the Grim Geisha.
08:34It literally, like, I couldn't.
08:39The height was impressive.
08:41I just wasn't sure where it was going or, like, what.
08:46I do, I appreciate that they were wearing, you know, Christian Cowan, their partner's label.
08:54But, yeah, I didn't know about the look.
08:57What would you do if you woke up and that was standing there over your bed?
09:01I'd be like seven days.
09:03My time is almost up.
09:04I thought the grand finale, come on.
09:08Not just Beyoncé in, oh, my God.
09:13That was worth waiting 10 years.
09:15Yes.
09:16And then to have Blue Ivy and JTZ.
09:20Oh, yes.
09:21The family moment.
09:22Yes.
09:23But her dress, I mean, how did they even get her in it?
09:28It was, talk about nailing the assignment.
09:33The body, bringing in a skeleton, which I'm kind of surprised no one else did.
09:38A few people did.
09:40Oh, okay.
09:41But not like that.
09:43Right.
09:43Which is why you don't remember the other ones.
09:45That's probably why.
09:47It's whoever does it the best is the one who sticks in your memory.
09:50Yeah, I mean, that was worth the 10-year wait.
09:53Absolutely.
09:54Yeah, it was quite, it was a true grand finale moment.
09:58Even though Rihanna arrived after, I was kind of interested to see who would be the last
10:03one to close the carpet.
10:05It was, I have a feeling it was supposed to be Beyoncé.
10:11I can't imagine that they, you know, they usually open with one of the hosts and end.
10:18So I have a feeling we had a couple people running late.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Which is a giant no-no.
10:23Yeah.
10:23The other great-looking couple was Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union.
10:30Oh, they always look so good together.
10:33And they seem so in love.
10:35It's just like.
10:36She was in Michael Kors and the color and it just looked like liquid.
10:41But again, he is so brilliant at draping and tailoring.
10:49And then him with the no sleeves.
10:52Like, we were like, what did he bring?
10:54He brought good genetics and she brought good genetics and a phenomenal dress.
10:59And the two of them together did hit the theme.
11:03Yeah, absolutely.
11:04Absolutely.
11:06Oh, wait, let's, we got to talk about Katy Perry because at first I thought that look
11:09was AI and then I found out it was not, but it was inspired by AI.
11:14Well, I think it had a different inspiration.
11:17Tell me.
11:18Which was, remember, she was on Blue Origin.
11:20Yes.
11:21With?
11:22With Lauren.
11:23Lauren.
11:24And I felt like, because if you look, it was Stella McCartney, but if you look, part of
11:28the train has like singe marks.
11:30Yes.
11:30So all I could think about was, thank goodness the heat shield's held up.
11:35That is all I could think about.
11:37She's the rocket being singed on the bottom.
11:40Apparently the singe marks were supposed to be a nod to her new song.
11:43I don't know if it's out yet or coming out, but we had the exact same thought about rocket
11:48flames.
11:49Like, yeah, it's, yeah, it was giving space explorer.
11:53Um, Connor's story for me, I used to have a very similar shirt.
12:00It was seriously, it was exactly the only difference was mine was not at like a train
12:06in the back.
12:07Mine kind of like had a little tie, a little bow and then flew, uh, flowed down to like
12:12mid back.
12:14So I'm like, how'd he get my shirt?
12:17I will say, you know, look aside props to bad bunny and also Heidi Klum, which I do want
12:25to talk about for like going the full nine yards with prosthetics that must've taken
12:29many, many hours.
12:30But I want your thoughts on Heidi because like, Oh my, we, we know Heidi loves Halloween
12:36loves and goes and okay.
12:39Yes.
12:40Art, marble, get it.
12:41But you know how they say Christmas in July, Halloween in May.
12:46Like, I don't know.
12:47I mean, that's so Heidi.
12:50It's so on brand, but yeah, it was like Halloween in May.
12:55Yeah.
12:55That could have been like her Halloween idea.
12:57And she was like, actually, you know what?
12:58I'm going to save that one for the Met.
13:00Exactly.
13:01Okay.
13:02Lisa, again, sometimes you take a risk and it works.
13:07And again, this was leaning into the art.
13:10It was by a man named Robert Wan.
13:12Oh yes.
13:12Who had a lot of really good looks last night.
13:14Well, he also had the one on Jordan Roth, which was like the piggyback, but that's like,
13:18are you sneaking in a plus one?
13:19I don't know what that was.
13:21Sleep paralysis demon.
13:23Yeah.
13:23Exactly.
13:24But Lisa's worked.
13:26Yeah.
13:26I thought it was very cool.
13:28It was very cool.
13:29It was beautiful underneath, white, and then that veil being held up by the two arms that
13:36were molds of her arms.
13:39And I can't necessarily explain why, but that worked on theme.
13:45Okay.
13:46Tiana Taylor in Tom Ford.
13:49Everybody's raving about it.
13:51Everyone.
13:52And all I saw was gay cousin it.
13:55You know what I mean?
13:56I mean...
