00:23Variety reported that she had creative differences with White, the creator and director of The White Lotus,
00:28because he demanded a more, quote, boisterous performance from her.
00:32Carter was supposed to play a washed-out star chasing a comeback, sources told the outlet.
00:37An HBO spokesperson previously told Page Six about Carter's exit, quote,
00:41With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike
00:46White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.
00:50HBO, the producers, and Mike White are saddened that they won't get to work with her,
00:54but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.
00:59Thankfully, Oscar winner and Mike White's longtime pal, Laura Dern, came to the rescue.
01:04Just days later, she was announced as Carter's replacement.
01:07However, Dern isn't taking over Carter's exact role, but instead, White wrote The Big Little Live star her own character.

01:14And get this, Dern isn't a stranger to The White Lotus.
01:17She made an uncredited voice cameo in season two.
01:20She's also worked with Mike White before on 2007's Year of the Dog and the 2011 HBO drama Enlightened, now
01:27considered a cult classic.
01:29The White Lotus season four is set at a luxury resort in France during the Cannes Film Festival, according to
01:35the show's official press release.
01:36The star-studded cast includes Rosie Perez, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennett, Heather Graham, Steve Coogan, AJ Michalka, and
01:46Sondra Bernhardt.
01:47Variety reported that the show has a massive $120 million budget this season, and will use the Cannes Film Festival
01:53as its central setting during the seven-month production.
