00:00Who are you?
00:01Luigi Mario.
00:02What, you got a problem with that?
00:04I don't got a problem with that.
00:05Let's go.
00:06Okay, come on, let's go.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're exploring the movies that were completely overshadowed,
00:13if not totally destroyed, by the scandals and antics on set.
00:17You got 20 seconds.
00:2120.
00:23Justice League.
00:25Kal-El, no.
00:31By the time it entered production in 2015, this DC mashup had already taken nearly a
00:36decade to get off the ground.
00:38Then, Zack Snyder's highly publicized exit as director due to a family tragedy signaled
00:42a complete overhaul.
00:44Joss Whedon stepped in, reconceptualizing Justice League and essentially gutting it like he
00:49was refurbishing a house.
00:50Do you feel a sense of confidence that we're not doing something horribly wrong and macabre
00:56here?
00:56This shift in power also had another consequence.
00:59It exposed years' worth of Whedon's abusive and toxic behavior on sets that stretches
01:04as far back as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
01:07Justice League flopped both critically and financially.
01:09Fans began to campaign for the release of the fabled and much more beloved Snyder Cut,
01:13which came to fruition in 2021.
01:22Blade Trinity.
01:24I got a question for you.
01:26Say we're successful, say we wipe out all the vampires.
01:29What then, huh?
01:31You ever ask yourself that?
01:32For a lot of fans, Wesley Snipes' behavior on set of the third Blade movie is the most
01:37memorable thing about it.
01:38By all accounts, the set of Blade Trinity was appropriately hellish.
01:42When the trilogy's screenwriter David S. Goyer was promoted to director for the third
01:46movie, Snipes was totally against the choice.
01:49I think somebody here wants to talk about vampires.
01:51It's been alleged that he would only communicate with Goyer and many colleagues on set through
01:57sticky notes.
01:58Blade Trinity made money, but the critical reception and bad press essentially ended the stand-alone
02:03series.
02:03Snipes ended up suing New Line and Goyer for underpayment.
02:06Also, just a thought, but you might want to consider blinking once in a while.
02:11Terminator Salvation.
02:12What don't you get about it?
02:15I was looking at the light.
02:17Oh, good for you.
02:19And how was it?
02:20You would think that audio of your star berating a cinematographer would be the worst thing
02:25to happen while your movie's being filmed.
02:28Christian Bale's profanity-laden tirade went viral in 2009.
02:31However, the fourth Terminator movie was the first to move away from star Arnold Schwarzenegger
02:37and try to make a new series set with James Cameron's original world.
02:46What's your name?
02:48Kyle Reese.
02:49Kyle Reese.
02:50Several scripts and rewrites ensued.
02:53Despite some negative press, Terminator Salvation made money, meaning a sequel was imminent.
02:58But financial disaster and lawsuits involving production company Halcyon Productions overshadowed
03:04that success.
03:09Do it!
03:10You son of a bitch!
03:12Super Mario Brothers.
03:14Hey, you Mario, look, I grew an inch.
03:20Hey, what's that?
03:22From the jump, screenwriters struggled to bring the Nintendo icon to life.
03:26All the rewrites and script doctoring in the world couldn't make Super Mario Brothers make
03:30sense.
03:31By all accounts, the directors, then married couple Rocky Morton and Annabelle Janko, were
03:36in over their heads.
03:38And that chaos shows on screen.
03:40Oh, Luis!
03:43Oops!
03:44Sorry!
03:46Mario!
03:47I got you!
03:49Star Bob Hoskins considered agreeing to play Mario was his biggest mistake.
03:53He and co-star John Leguizamo spent most of the production drinking to cope, which inevitably
03:58led to some injuries.
04:00Nintendo was so horrified by the result that they wouldn't make another Mario movie for
04:04three decades.
04:12The Flash.
04:13What did you do?
04:14Nothing.
04:15Why?
04:16You could argue that the DC Extended Universe never really found its footing.
04:20The Flash and the casting of actor Ezra Miller were initially announced in 2014.
04:25The finished film wouldn't reach theaters until 2023.
04:38Script changes and post-production edits would have been enough, but The Flash was mostly
04:43done by the erratic behavior of its star.
04:45Ezra Miller's increasingly unhinged antisocial and suspicious behavior was widely publicized.
04:50From bar fights in Hawaii to disturbing allegations of grooming and harassment, Miller's very
04:54public cries tanked the movie's chances.
04:57Even if The Flash had been a decent movie, it hardly would have mattered.
05:01I'm sorry, that makes absolutely no sense.
05:03What are you talking about, sir?
05:04You're the allegations.
05:05Thank you so much.
05:06Trial.
05:07We're good here.
05:09It ends with us.
05:11No.
05:12You have.
05:14I have you.
05:15Please.
05:16You have, baby.
05:17You have.
05:17You have.
05:18I have.
05:19Adapted from the best-selling novel by Colleen Hoover, this film about a toxic relationship
05:24was always going to be a hard sell.
05:26The marketing campaign for It Ends With Us made many potential viewers uncomfortable.
05:31But actor-director Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively's feud over the movie's creative direction
05:36soon gave way to a series of rumors and lawsuits that captured the media's attention.
05:41Good.
05:43That was like hours ago.
05:46The nature of this feud, including allegations of harassment, surveillance, media manipulation,
05:51and intimidation tactics, had a startling and disturbing parallel to its subject matter.
05:55In the end, it did good business at the box office.
05:58Still, it's hard to imagine anyone feeling good about it.
06:01Even author Colleen Hoover confessed she was embarrassed to be associated with it.
06:05Okay?
06:06Okay.
06:08Yeah.
06:09I don't know.
06:11Roar.
06:17Actress and animal rights activist Tippi Hedren and her husband, co-writer and director
06:21Noel Marshall, poured much of their own money into this 1981 flop.
06:26Produced over an 11-year period, Roar is still considered one of the most dangerous movies ever
06:31made.
06:31Nice one.
06:34Nice one.
06:39Hedren, Marshall starred alongside their own children, including a young Melanie Griffith
06:44and an ensemble of real-life lions, tigers, elephants, and other wild animals.
06:49Over 70 people were injured making Roar, including Hedren.
06:53She and Marshall suffered injuries that became gangrenous.
06:56Natural disasters like floods, destroyed major filming locations, and thousands of dollars
07:01worth of equipment.
07:02After all that, the movie made well under half of its budget back.
07:16Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
07:18The critics described it as brilliant.
07:22Do you remember what year you made that picture?
07:25Betty Davis and Joanne Crawford were both in need of a hit in the early 60s.
07:30With its mix of old Hollywood nostalgia and creepy exploitative thrills, whatever happened
07:35to Baby Jane was a massive success.
07:37However, tales of the co-star's long-standing feud boiling over came to overshadow the movie.
07:51Classic movie fans devoured anecdotes about Davis actually kicking Crawford during a fight scene
07:56and Crawford wearing weights under her dress in a scene where Davis had to carry her.
08:01Though the movie was a success and even earned several Oscar nods,
08:04the two's fractious relationship saw Crawford fire from their next movie.
08:08Hush.
08:09Hush, sweet Charlotte.
08:10I watched you get out of the car.
08:14I wanted to run you down.
08:17Crush you.
08:18Don't worry, darling.
08:19I don't want to be here anymore.
08:22And we need to leave.
08:27We need to leave.
08:28We may never really know if Harry Styles actually spit on Chris Pine
08:32at the Venice premiere of Olivia Wilde's Embattled Don't Worry Darling.
08:36What we do know is that few of the true details about its making are known.
08:40The absence of star Florence Pugh from major press junkets, Wilde's custody battle with
08:45ex-Jason Sudeikis, and Shia LaBeouf's mysterious exit from the film fed the growing dumpster fire.
08:51I'm curious to hear where she's going with this.
08:55Frank is doing something to us.
08:58Something happened here.
09:00We're just not sure what.
09:01The movie itself couldn't live up to all the hype.
09:04It was a case of the story behind the scenes being way more compelling than anything before it.
09:09I know.
09:10They're going to kill you.
09:11They're going to kill you in the real world.
09:13They're going to kill your real body.
09:14You need to go.
09:15The Island of Dr. Moreau.
09:17Don't you feel the heat?
09:19As I do.
09:20I can't tolerate the sun.
09:23Marlon Brando was long considered one of the best actors of all time.
09:26By the time he showed up to work on The Island of Dr. Moreau,
09:29he was an unreliable, unprepared, and unruly presence.
09:33His bonkers performance mirrors the entire production.
09:35I think perhaps this is not the time to continue.
09:38We will have dinner at 8 o'clock.
09:40I hope that you'll be in another state of mind that will be slightly more receptive.
09:45Actor Val Kimmer was no better.
09:46His frequent clashes with Brando and director Richard Stanley
09:49saw Stanley being replaced by John Frankenheimer.
09:52But the problems just kept mounting, and so did the budget.
09:56With a deluge of script rewrites and flared tempers,
09:59no one came away feeling good about the finished product.
10:02That includes the audience.
10:03The movie bombed so hard, it destroyed several careers.
10:07It's pure, harmonious, absolutely incapable of malice.
10:13Which of these movies turned out better than they should have?
