00:01On this day in space. On May 7th, 1992, the space shuttle Endeavour launched on
00:06its first flight. This was the fifth and last space shuttle that was ever built.
00:11STS-49 was the first of 25 missions to fly on Endeavour. The purpose of this
00:16mission was to retrieve a satellite called Intel Sat-603, which had failed
00:20to achieve the right orbit after problems with its launch two years
00:22earlier. Three of the six astronauts had to go on a spacewalk together to fetch
00:26the satellite. This was the first time that a trio of astronauts did a spacewalk
00:30together. They first tried to do the job with just two astronauts going out two
00:34days in a row, but the third try was a charm with an extra pair of hands. The
00:38crew attached a new motor that would enable Intel Sat-603 to leave low-earth
00:42orbit and head to its intended geosynchronous orbit. And that's what
00:45happened on this day in space.
