00:00Are you ready to get steamed up?
00:01Yeah!
00:04Four sets of holiday hosts...
00:06Thanks so much for having us, we've had a great time.
00:08See you soon.
00:09Bye.
00:09...have stayed at each other's places.
00:12Today, with all the visits over, scores are settled...
00:15I can honestly say to all three of you, I've treated every visit the same, fair and honestly.
00:22...and the payments are revealed.
00:23That's really generous, thank you so much.
00:26It was a lovely room.
00:27With four and a bed...
00:28It certainly is not our intention to offend or upset you.
00:32Did anyone get a good night's sleep?
00:35I don't think you should ever compromise on claiming.
00:38I really don't.
00:46It's the final day of the competition to be named Best Value Place of the Week.
00:51The rival hosts are assembling one last time...
00:54...to find out what they've been paid and settle some scores.
00:59Right, let's get the show on the road.
01:01Kicking things off are Fiona and Michael Farrow, who were first to host this week.
01:06Time to get some answers.
01:09When they welcomed their guests to the three horseshoes in Warham, Norfolk...
01:14Hi.
01:15Hello.
01:15...Helen and Carl were beaming.
01:17I think there's bags of character, the beams on the ceiling.
01:21Wow.
01:22And Carl and Liz fawned over the furnishings.
01:25This is nice, matches in with the headboard.
01:27Yeah, nice and clean inside as well.
01:30But Barbara and Elizabeth had a flaky start.
01:33I think they could do with touching up the paint round the windows a bit.
01:38And thought the cleanliness didn't brush up.
01:40What is all that white?
01:42Is that bits of loo paper?
01:44As did Helen and Carl.
01:46A bit much, that is, isn't it?
01:48It's like a handprint.
01:50This is from one white.
01:51This is basic cleanliness.
01:53There's hairs everywhere again.
01:55There's not just a few, there's a lot in here.
01:57The following morning, Helen was dour about her shower.
02:01The holes are blocked and it's got too much pressure and that hurts.
02:06And it's leaking down here.
02:08But come feedback, it was her and Carl's cleanliness score...
02:12I'm going to say it's a three.
02:14..that didn't wash.
02:15It's a three.
02:17Oh, my God, that's really low.
02:19So now, round the table,
02:21Fiona and Michael want to clean a few things up.
02:24How clean was the three horseshoes you gave us a three?
02:28Handprint on towel.
02:30What? We picked it up
02:31and there was four fingerprints about that big on the towel.
02:35On the outside or in the fold?
02:38It was down the back, you couldn't see it.
02:40So it was only when we pulled it that way there was this big handprint.
02:43It looked like something had gone like that
02:45and those fingerprints were down behind it.
02:47So someone had leaned on it, maybe?
02:49It was yellow, I don't know.
02:50Oh, like a tan mark?
02:52Ooh, might be.
02:53We just reject things like that to the laundry company
02:57and they deal with it, so it shouldn't be back in circulation.
02:59Yeah, brilliant.
03:01The next point, dirty toilet.
03:04I took some tissue paper, I ran it under the rim and it came out black.
03:11We do use a cleaner in there.
03:13We cleaned it twice before.
03:15It wasn't just a small piece of black.
03:17It was a lot there, up there, Fiona.
03:19We don't get any negative feedback normally.
03:22We had little things.
03:24Probably the biggest issue for us was the loo brush.
03:27It did look like there was dried loo paper on the loo brush.
03:31Generally, we never, ever get any cleaning complaints.
03:34We're very proud of our cleaning team,
03:36so I appreciate your feedback.
03:38We can go back and look at it,
03:39but generally we get a very, very happy guest report from our guests.
03:44As I keep saying, we never have complaints
03:46and I think they may have exaggerated.
03:49I don't think you should ever compromise on cleaning.
03:53I really don't.
03:56Now the couple want to pour water on another complaint.
03:59How were the facilities you scored us a seven?
04:03Shower clogged painful sensation.
04:06Yeah, so the shower had a lot of limescale on it,
04:08so some of the holes were blocked.
04:11So the rest of the water was coming through the other holes
04:14and it was painful.
04:15I don't mean painful, it was just like...
04:17You wrote painful.
04:18OK, it was a painful sensation.
04:21It was like beast...
04:22All right, it's like needle stings.
04:24A lot of people really like a full-pressure shower
04:28and, unfortunately, you don't.
04:30Well, it wasn't a pressure.
04:32Half the holes are blocked.
04:33It causes the other holes to have 10 times more pressure.
04:36I'm sorry, but the half of them weren't blocked.
04:39So we'll look into it
04:40and see if there's any changes that need making.
04:43The only painful thing in this competition
04:45are Carl and Ellen's comments.
04:48Fiona and Michael can now find out how much they've been paid,
04:51starting with Carl and Liz
04:53and Carl's £165 room.
04:58£140, £160.
04:59That is £165, which was full payment.
05:03Thank you, guys.
05:04We loved our stay, didn't we?
05:05We did.
05:06We'll definitely be coming back to see you again.
05:08Next, it's Barbara and Elizabeth
05:10and Barbara's room, which cost £180.
05:15£140, £160, £170.
05:17That's £10 under.
05:18Would you like to say why?
05:19It's just the one or two little things we picked up
05:23with the cleanliness and a little bit of maintenance.
05:26The paint on the woodwork out on the front,
05:29that was quite heavily flaking.
05:31I'd agree.
05:32The doors and windows is definitely number one
05:35on our maintenance man's next job.
05:37I was a little disappointed with Barbara and Liz's underpayment,
05:40but I can understand it with the issues that they've brought up.
05:44Finally, it's Helen and Carl's £185 room.
05:49£140, £150, £155.
05:51That's a £30 underpayment.
05:54I looked at it in terms of what would I offer to one of my guests
05:58if they'd have found those issues.
06:00It is our most popular room, it's the most requested,
06:03and we sell it at that price all the time,
06:05so I stand by our price and I think it's great value,
06:09as our customers do.
06:11I feel Helen and Carl are definitely playing the game
06:13and I think their payment has definitely proved that to us.
06:16We're not playing the game, we've been honest all the way.
06:19With the Red House paying in full,
06:21Holly Lodge bed and breakfast holding back £10
06:24and Peacock Lake knocking off £30,
06:28the three horse shoes finishes with a final bill average of 93%.
06:33Next to face their feedback are colleagues Carl Webb and Liz Houlihan.
06:38Oh, let's get some answers on ours then.
06:40When the guests rolled into the Red House in Longstow, Cambridgeshire...
06:45Good morning.
06:46Good morning.
06:47..at first they saw the colour of their money.
06:50Wow.
06:50It's absolutely beautiful.
06:52Wow.
06:53This is lovely.
06:54Really great-sized room.
06:56Absolutely stunning.
06:58Lovely high ceilings.
06:59I love the beams.
07:01Oh, wow.
07:02Really stunning.
07:04Absolutely really chic.
07:05But on closer inspection,
07:07for Helen and Carl, impressions crumbled.
07:10This should have been vacuumed.
07:12You've got all bits...
07:14The back of the telly's got all dust on it.
07:17Come morning, while Michael and Fiona bedded in...
07:20What a lovely job they've done with the linens and the room in general.
07:25Helen and Carl critiqued the communal area.
07:27Couldn't go on that table and sit in the middle of all them windows.
07:31I like it private.
07:32Yeah.
07:33But come feedback...
07:34How clean was the Red House?
07:37They dished the dirt.
07:38A seven.
07:39A seven.
07:40Oh, no.
07:41A seven.
07:42No.
07:44Now face to face, Carl and Liz want to tidy up Helen and Carl's cleaning critiques.
07:49Helen and Carl, you scored us a seven.
07:52Sofa not vacuumed underneath.
07:54So, this goes back to what we have our cleaners do.
07:59They are asked to remove the cushions and vacuum underneath.
08:03I don't regularly vacuum under the cushions of the sofa,
08:07so maybe that's something I should do between every guest.
08:10Yeah.
08:10And then dust behind the TV, what were you doing behind there?
08:14Checking what I asked my cleaners to check.
08:17So, yeah, I did checking.
08:19I mean, when we've got a cleaning team like you have,
08:21then we'll put those bits on the list as well.
08:23But for the meantime, we need to try harder.
08:25I think Helen and Carl's approach to our visit was a bit picky, which is a shame.
08:31I wanted my feedback to be beneficial.
08:33I'm not sure that they've seen it from that point of view.
08:36They've just seen it as a direct attack.
08:39Carl and Liz can now count their cash,
08:42starting with Barbara and Elizabeth and Barbara's £145 room.
08:48100, 120, 145.
08:51That's an exact payment.
08:53You're so welcome.
08:54It was a fantastic experience.
08:57Next, it's Fiona and Michael's room, also priced at £145.
09:04120, 140, 165.
09:08Wow.
09:08Wow.
09:09That's a £20 overpayment.
09:10That's really generous.
09:11Thank you so much.
09:13It was a lovely room.
09:14You know, we really feel that you are undervaluing your rooms.
09:18We are really chuffed.
09:19Yeah, over the moon, really.
09:21Finally, it's Helen and Carl's £165 room.
09:27130, 140, 150.
09:30So that's a £15 underpayment.
09:32That's really disappointing.
09:34Yeah.
09:34Can you tell us why?
09:35It was due to the cleanliness and the privacy.
09:38We just felt, as soon as you opened the door, that we were stepping out to no privacy.
09:42And the table, what was there, was in the middle of every, you know, everybody.
09:46Those stable blocks were, two of them were existing and we joined them together, so we were kind
09:51of a bit restricted on what we could do to add privacy.
09:55Okay.
09:55It's a bit disappointing.
09:56It is disappointing.
09:58Yeah.
09:58I think it's a little bit harsh, but we accept your payment.
10:01The issues that they found, I don't think it warrants that sort of drop in the payment.
10:05No.
10:05You can't find them issues and expect full payment.
10:08That's my opinion.
10:09With Holly Lodge bed and breakfast paying the asking price, the three horseshoes tipping
10:14£20 and Peacock Lake holding back £15, the Red House finishes with a final bill average
10:22of 102%.
10:24With half the payments in, two sets of hosts are yet to face their critics.
10:29I can see this afternoon's going to be a bit of a fiery one.
10:39It's the final day of the competition to be named Best Value Place of the Week.
10:44Two sets of hosts have already found out what they've been paid.
10:47Next up, our friends and colleagues Barbara Cushing and Elizabeth Good.
10:52Let's get down to business.
10:56When the guests arrived at Holly Lodge bed and breakfast in Thursford, Norfolk.
11:00Good morning.
11:01Good morning.
11:02Good morning.
11:03First impressions were very good.
11:06It's lovely.
11:07So quirky.
11:08Oh, my God, it's stunning.
11:10Oh, wow.
11:12Oh, yeah, lovely.
11:14Oh, gorgeous bath.
11:16It's absolutely beautiful.
11:17But before long, Helen and Carl gave a prickly review.
11:21We've got hair in the bed.
11:24Got another hair here again.
11:27Can you see the dust down here?
11:29Yeah, yeah.
11:30And the following morning, how did you sleep?
11:32I slept very well, thank you.
11:33How about you?
11:34Amazingly well.
11:36Carl was left hanging.
11:37Helen, there's nowhere to hang these at all.
11:40But come feedback, it was his and Helen's cleaning critique.
11:44How clean was Holly Lodge?
11:46Seven.
11:46I agree.
11:48That the hosts couldn't sweep under the rug.
11:50The seven?
11:51That is a disappointment.
11:52I can't deny that.
11:53Disappointing.
11:54Now eye to eye.
11:56Barbara and Elizabeth want to wipe away Helen and Carl's woes.
11:59How clean was the shepherd's hut?
12:03A disappointing seven.
12:05You found hairs in the bed.
12:08Yeah.
12:09It was a couple of quite dark hairs in there.
12:12Just needed a final check.
12:14In the bed?
12:15Yeah.
12:15On the sheets?
12:16Yeah.
12:18Unbelievable, they're going to have to start wearing shower caps.
12:23Okay, so dust on the bed frame.
12:25Yeah, so down underneath your bed, there's dust starting to build up, you know, and you
12:31lift the mattress up, pull down the sides.
12:33I'm really surprised the girls have missed that.
12:36I can't quite believe that.
12:38Seven, we felt so disappointed.
12:41To be honest, we saw the seven and it hurt.
12:44I won't deny it, it did hurt.
12:46It seemed so, so slightly petty.
12:50We wanted to approach it fair and square and it certainly 100% was not out of pettiness.
12:56I don't believe that Helen and Carl judged our cleanliness fairly.
13:02Some things were so minuscule, not even visual by the human eye, but then again, maybe I
13:08need to wear my glasses more.
13:10But it's the money that matters, starting with Carl and Liz and Carl's £180 room.
13:19140, 160, or 180 full payment.
13:25Yeah, your place was absolutely stunning.
13:27That's great.
13:28Really appreciate your feedback.
13:29Next, it's Fiona and Michael's room, priced at £190.
13:37180, 200, £220.
13:41That's an overpayment of £30.
13:44That's amazing.
13:45We loved your place.
13:46It's just very high end.
13:49Yeah, we think it's worth it.
13:52Do you want my tissues?
13:54Your place is exceptional.
13:56Yeah, it is exceptional.
13:57What can I say?
13:58Thank you very, very much.
14:00Oh, my goodness.
14:02Fiona and Michael's overpayment beyond touched our hearts.
14:08Finally, it's Helen and Carl's £200 shepherd's hut.
14:15£160, £180, £190.
14:19Underpaid by £10.
14:21Would you mind explaining, Helen and Carl?
14:24That was due to some very, very minor cleaning issues in the facilities, like the shower.
14:29I just really could have done with some wear, just to put your shower gel on, and I wouldn't have
14:34had a problem.
14:35That's fine.
14:36I accept that.
14:37Carl and Helen's £10 underpayment.
14:41I don't like it, but we have to accept it.
14:44£10 deduction for what we found in that part, I think, was really fair.
14:48With the Red House paying in full, the Three Horseshoes overpaying by £30, and Peacock Lake withholding £10, Holly Lodge
14:58Bed and Breakfast finishes with a final bill average of 104%.
15:04The last contenders vying for this week's title are couple Helen Robertson and Carl Gibbs.
15:10The gloves are off.
15:11Let's go.
15:12When they welcomed their rivals to Peacock Lake in Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire...
15:17Hello.
15:17Hello. Lovely to see you again.
15:19Good morning.
15:19At first, all were happy campers.
15:22This is lovely.
15:23Very nice, very cosy.
15:25Wow, wow, wow.
15:27Looks long.
15:29It's like a TARDIS on a lake.
15:32Hob's spotlessly clean, isn't it?
15:34But soon they were let down by the upkeep.
15:37There's hair here.
15:38Look at this.
15:39Oh, don't, don't...
15:40That's not just one, is it?
15:42That's loads of it.
15:43There's a couple of marks, which is a shame, because it makes these feel a bit worn.
15:47That doesn't look right.
15:49Looks like someone's poured a coffee in it.
15:52Puff.
15:52Puff-a-lis and a smell.
15:54It hasn't been washed.
15:55Oh, my God.
15:57What is in there?
15:58I think it's tissue.
15:59And Barbara felt the call of nature.
16:01I just feel the plastic plants.
16:04It should be more natural foliage.
16:07Come morning, Carl was short on suns.
16:10There's no shampoo or shower gel.
16:13I think there's some hand soap in there.
16:15I guess I'm using hand soap.
16:17But at feedback, it was Barbara and Elizabeth's score...
16:21How clean was Peacock Lake?
16:23I do think it's a five.
16:24I think it's a five.
16:26..that left the hosts sore.
16:28A five.
16:29Wow, wow, wow.
16:32Now, all together, Helen and Carl want to mop up the moans.
16:36How clean was Peacock Lake?
16:39A five.
16:42Absolutely gobsmacked.
16:43We've got sofa bed needs a thorough clean.
16:46So, do you want to talk me through that one?
16:49Do you want to start?
16:49Mm-hm.
16:50So, when we actually checked the sofa bed,
16:52we were really surprised to discover...
16:54It wasn't so much dust, it was like crumbs,
16:57but there were bits of very long hairs.
16:59I was surprised it hadn't been vacuumed
17:01and it hadn't been picked up.
17:03What I'd like to say to both of you is thank you.
17:06..because it's not on our checklist.
17:08We don't use the sofa beds.
17:10So, I am accepting your feedback on that,
17:13but I certainly don't accept the five at all.
17:16It's an awful score to give.
17:18We've applied scores based on a consistent approach
17:22and I don't feel this is consistent.
17:24Well, I'm really sorry that you do feel that way
17:27and it certainly is not our intention to offend or upset you.
17:32I'm not sure that your scoring has always been consistent either, Helen.
17:36With your own feedback to us
17:37and to give us the low mark you gave us,
17:40if you applied that to your own site,
17:43what would you have given yourself?
17:45A six or a seven.
17:46Would you?
17:46Yeah.
17:47And you think that that would equate still
17:49to the low score you gave my premises?
17:52Well, there was problems in your room everywhere, wasn't there?
17:54The shower?
17:55Well, you can laugh, but if you want us to play that game,
17:57the shower was playing.
17:58We were not playing a game.
18:00No.
18:00We were doing a competition about accommodation.
18:04Yeah.
18:05Helen, can you understand that the way that you have approached our businesses
18:08with your thorough checks,
18:11then we want to put you under the same rigour that you've put us under?
18:15You're telling me now,
18:16because we went in with a certain approach,
18:18you changed it for me?
18:20I definitely checked yours more than I checked other people's, yeah.
18:22Because I can honestly say to all three of you,
18:25I've treated every visit the same.
18:27I wouldn't change anything I did.
18:31Totally stand by the score for cleanliness that we gave Helen and Carl,
18:35and there is absolutely no way that we've been playing a game.
18:40It's not game playing,
18:41it's about making sure that it's fair
18:43that we are pitched against her in the same way.
18:48Helen and Carl can now cash up,
18:50starting with Fiona and Michael's £160 pod.
18:55£140, £150, £155.
18:58That's a £5 underpayment.
19:01There was only a couple of cleanliness nickels,
19:03but we really, really enjoyed our stay.
19:05I think that's more than fair, and thank you very much.
19:07Thank you very much.
19:08Next, it's Carl and Liz,
19:10and Carl's pod priced at £170.
19:16£120, £140, £160.
19:18That's an underpayment of £10.
19:21Do you want to walk me through that, please?
19:23Yeah, so just those small cleanliness issues,
19:26and I didn't realise that you didn't supply shower gel,
19:29so unfortunately I had a shower with your hand soap.
19:33It's just something we've never had provided,
19:35and we don't want to provide.
19:37Fair enough.
19:38It's a shame how Carl and Liz approach their visit with us,
19:42but we'll take their underpayment on the chin.
19:45Finally, it's Barbara and Elizabeth,
19:48and Barbara's £170 pod.
19:51£100, £120, £140, £145.
19:55Do you want to talk me through the underpayment of £25, please?
20:00It came down to essentially the facilities
20:03and the cleanliness that we saw.
20:06We took on board the cleaning issues,
20:09but the facilities, I believe that we have good facilities there.
20:13To me, there was too much plastic around.
20:17You know, plastic flowers and plastic grass.
20:20The planting, I don't like it,
20:23but our guests love it.
20:27I mean, couldn't put grass down at all.
20:29You know, artificial grass, in my opinion, is ten times better.
20:32If it's not for you, it's not for you,
20:33but we stand by that rate.
20:36Really disappointed to be underpaid by everybody.
20:39They come looking for revenge, in my opinion.
20:42With the three horseshoes withholding £5,
20:45the Red House knocking off £10,
20:47and Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast underpaying by £25,
20:52Peacock Lake finishes with a final bill average of 92%.
20:57With all the payments in,
20:59it's down to Fiona to reveal the results.
21:02In fourth place, we have...
21:07Peacock Lake.
21:09Well done.
21:10Well done.
21:12We might have finished in fourth place,
21:14but obviously there's only one position,
21:17and that's up to go.
21:18In third place, we have...
21:23..the Three Horseshoes.
21:27The competition was fierce, and the standard was excellent,
21:31and we're just proud to have taken part.
21:33Yes.
21:34So the top spot is between the Red House
21:36and Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast.
21:39The winner is...
21:44..Holly Lodge B&B.
21:45Well done.
21:47You're welcome.
21:48You're welcome.
21:49You're welcome.
21:50Winning this competition truly feels amazing,
21:55and you've been the most incredible sidekick, really.
21:59That's just my role in life.
22:02Everyone are winners.
22:05Well done, Holly Lodge.
22:10We're really proud that we've come second,
22:12and Barbara and Elizabeth coming first is...
22:14They're well-deserved.
22:15Absolutely well-deserved.
22:17They were our winners, weren't they?
22:18They were.
22:19Cheers, everybody!
22:21Cheers!
22:22I prepared a quote,
22:24set your goals high and don't stop until you get there.
22:29And we've got there.
22:31Absolutely.
22:31Well done.
