00:00I'd be happy doing a dump in there.
00:03Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:05Beam me up, Scotty.
00:06Check in to each other's places.
00:08Good morning, Carl.
00:09Good morning to you both.
00:10And welcome to Peacock Lake.
00:12And suss out one another.
00:13I have an older son.
00:16I think he's very handsome.
00:17I'm excited for you to meet him.
00:19Oh, thank you.
00:21Today, the guests meet the locals.
00:24You're going to take him home?
00:25I am taking him home. He'll be in the boot.
00:27He'll look lovely in the garden.
00:28As they battle...
00:30We're all expecting something really exceptional.
00:32And why?
00:33We've all had your feedback.
00:35Yeah.
00:36To be named Best Value for Money.
00:38Seven. That is a disappointment.
00:40I can't deny that.
00:41That is disappointing.
00:49The third visit of the week is to Thursford in Norfolk
00:52and Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast,
00:54run by Barbara Cushing,
00:57ably assisted by Elizabeth Good
00:59and where the boss gives fuel for thought.
01:02One of Barbara's best qualities is her energy.
01:05It is boundless.
01:07She's very bubbly and she thinks the best of people.
01:10Oh, sweet.
01:12I like that, Elizabeth.
01:13Thank you for that.
01:15Those looking for a charming stay
01:17will find six rooms or a shepherd's hut
01:20for up to £200 a night,
01:22including a pre-ordered breakfast
01:24in a place where variety is the spice of life.
01:28It's an eclectic mixture of all sorts of things going on in here,
01:32old and new.
01:33It's just really welcoming.
01:35The garden's lovely.
01:36It just is well cared for
01:37and I think there's love and attention everywhere.
01:40And this pair hope their competitors won't dish the dirt.
01:43We are assured of our levels of cleanliness, I think.
01:46I think it does really matter to us.
01:50Yeah, it does.
01:52About to arrive are today's first guests.
01:55Oh, can you see that helicopter over there?
01:57Do you think that's Barbara coming in to land at her house?
02:00Hopefully she's bringing lots of wine with her.
02:03In a spin are Fiona and Michael Farrow
02:06of the Three Horseshoes in Warham, Norfolk.
02:09At the start of the week, during a glass-making class,
02:13Barbara proved a class act.
02:16I'm never going to complain about hand-blown glass price again in my life.
02:21Ever.
02:22Barbara comes across as someone who's quite well-to-do,
02:25but she's quite fun and will give anything a go.
02:29And so today, Fiona and Michael are on a flight of fancy.
02:34I'm expecting the facilities to be really top-notch.
02:38Very smart and elegant, like they are.
02:41Yeah.
02:45Wow, what a lovely house.
02:47It's absolutely stunning.
02:50Hello.
02:51Hello, Michael.
02:52Hello, Fiona.
02:53Hello.
02:53Good morning.
02:54Welcome to Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast.
02:57You'll be in Holly at £190 a night,
02:59which includes a pre-ordered breakfast.
03:03So welcome.
03:04See you later.
03:04Bye.
03:05Bye.
03:07Oh, my God, it's stunning.
03:09Wow, what a lovely room.
03:11Very luxe, very chic.
03:12Exactly what we'd have expected from Barb's and Liz.
03:16With Fiona and Michael appreciating the finer things,
03:20the next guests are heading into unfamiliar territory.
03:23It's very different to where we live, though, isn't it?
03:26Yeah, I don't think it's a bit too much for me.
03:29What?
03:29Too rural, too rural, too rural, too rural, rural.
03:37Tongue tied are couple Helen Robertson and Carl Gibbs of Peacock Lake in Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire.
03:44On the last visit over drinks, Barbara and Elizabeth purported their place is packed with personality.
03:51It's very much an extension of Barbara.
03:53Whether that's good or whether that's bad.
03:56It's a very good thing.
03:58And today, Helen and Carl are arriving with great expectations.
04:03It'd be like walking into Buckingham Palace, I think.
04:06We'll have a load of servants lined up to take our bags and then we'll go into a room for
04:10tea and scones.
04:14Good morning.
04:15Good morning.
04:16Hi.
04:17Welcome to Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast.
04:20You will be in the shepherd's hut at £200 per night.
04:26See you later.
04:26Bye.
04:28Oh, this is nice.
04:30Yeah.
04:30I've always wanted to stay in a horse shepherd's hut.
04:32Oh, wait till you see this.
04:35It's lovely.
04:36So quirky.
04:38With Helen and Carl after a break from the norm, today's final guests are getting back to nature.
04:44Is this the sort of place that you'd come to normally, do you think?
04:47If I wanted to disconnect, yeah.
04:49Yeah, that is up the street, yeah.
04:51Yeah.
04:51Lazy.
04:51It's not lazy.
04:53Yeah.
04:55Taking it lying down are colleagues Carl Webb and Liz Houlihan of the Red House in Longstow,
05:01Cambridgeshire.
05:02When they hosted last time...
05:04Good morning.
05:04Welcome to the Red House.
05:05Despite a bright start...
05:07Wow.
05:08This is lovely.
05:10Helen and Carl felt their room didn't scrub up.
05:13They should have been backings.
05:14You've got all bits.
05:16The drawers have got bits in them.
05:18Also, there's dust in there.
05:20And come feedback...
05:21How clean was the Red House?
05:24It wasn't lucky number seven.
05:26A seven.
05:27Oh, no.
05:29A seven.
05:30No.
05:31And today, Carl and Liz haven't brushed it off.
05:35Maybe we should sack the current cleaner, me.
05:38Definitely.
05:39And maybe Helen will come and work for us.
05:41If she's got that keen her eye, she can be our cleaner.
05:44Yeah.
05:46Good morning.
05:47Good morning.
05:49Good morning.
05:49Welcome to Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast.
05:52You'll be in Ivy at £180 per night.
05:56And we really hope you have a happy stay.
05:58Lovely.
05:59Enjoy your stay.
06:00Bye-bye.
06:01Bye.
06:01Bye.
06:04Oh, wow.
06:05Oh, look at this.
06:07This is really good, isn't it?
06:08It goes all the way around.
06:09Oh, yeah.
06:10Lovely.
06:12With the hosts out of the way,
06:14the guests don't beat around the bush at Holly Lodge.
06:18I love the fire.
06:19I like the fire.
06:21Spent all night playing with this.
06:22Look.
06:23It's really good.
06:24Oh, nice heavy bedding.
06:27Yeah, lovely heavy bedding.
06:28Lovely clean sheets.
06:29Very crisp and clean.
06:30Oh, look at these, Liz.
06:31We've got some wines here.
06:32Sauvignon Blanc, definitely.
06:34That's my one.
06:34Well, I guess I'm having the Merlot then.
06:36I like this window and the detailing that window, do you?
06:39Yeah.
06:39That's lovely, that is.
06:40Really, really nice.
06:43All workable, isn't it?
06:44Yeah.
06:45Good touch on that.
06:46Yeah.
06:46Looks like they've thought of everything.
06:48Nice biscuits.
06:49Biscuits are always my first thing.
06:51Oh!
06:52Let's have a look in here.
06:53Nice size wardrobe.
06:55Coat hangers.
06:55Yeah, plenty of hangers.
06:57We've got hair in the bed.
07:00You're joking me.
07:02No.
07:03And then we've got another hair here again.
07:08Loads of space in here.
07:10Nice colour.
07:11Yeah.
07:11Well thought out, I think.
07:12Yeah, nice.
07:13Oh, gorgeous bath.
07:14It's absolutely beautiful.
07:16Can you see the dust down here?
07:18Yeah, yeah.
07:19It's just a dust collection point.
07:21Just need to get a vacuum underneath.
07:23There's some grouts missing down here, actually.
07:25On the, um...
07:26On the floor.
07:27On the floor.
07:27Just hope it doesn't leak downstairs.
07:29Yeah.
07:30Really clean screen.
07:31I can't see anything.
07:32Not a single mark on it.
07:33Yeah.
07:34Oh!
07:35There's a hair in the fridge.
07:36Have a look.
07:37Room inspections almost over.
07:39Carl and Liz meet resident rodents.
07:42Look at this guy.
07:43He's nutty.
07:44Just like Barbara.
07:46Fiona and Michael soak it all in.
07:48I just need some champagne.
07:50Er, some candles.
07:52And you to massage me.
07:55And Helen and Carl flock around.
07:58You going to take him home?
07:59I am taking him home.
08:00He'll go in the boot.
08:01He'll look lovely in the garden.
08:02Yeah.
08:10Norfolk is said to be the birthplace of the fish finger.
08:13The first of which were made not from cod, but herring.
08:17And today, the hosts hope to reel their guests in with a visit to a local attraction close
08:22to Barbara's heart.
08:24A museum of steam-powered machines, curated by her father-in-law.
08:29This is my father-in-law's first showman's engine.
08:33To kick things off, Barbara is transporting her VIPs to the museum in style.
08:39I'll be good on the coal shoveling.
08:41You coal shoveling, I'll drive.
08:43Yeah, yeah.
08:45Are you ready to get steamed up?
08:47Yeah.
08:49Steve's done.
08:50Here we go.
08:54Engine chugging, Barbara's all about relativity.
08:59The family has lived in Thurston for over 300 years.
09:02Wow.
09:03Because you can see in the graveyard here, as long as there are graves, the cushings are in it.
09:09So we're pulling into the Thurston collection.
09:11A very, very large collection that my father-in-law has collected in his lifetime.
09:17When things were being scrapped, he loved them so much, he bought them.
09:22That was the best local transport we've had in Norfolk for a long time.
09:26It definitely was.
09:28And once inside the exhibition...
09:30Oh, wow, look at this.
09:32Barbara's full steam ahead.
09:34So here we have a genuine steam roller.
09:37My father-in-law started rolling roads for the rural council in the 20s.
09:43He built many, many roads and many, many drives to stately homes.
09:47And here we go on to these big beauties.
09:50Wow.
09:51These showman's engines would generate the power for the rides at the fairground.
09:57Aren't they just phenomenal?
09:59A lot of polishing.
10:00A lot of polishing.
10:03Barbara was exceptional, dear.
10:05Yeah, Barbara was 100% exceptional.
10:07She was well geared up on it, wasn't she?
10:09She knew everything about everything.
10:11Which I was amazed, really.
10:15Next, Barbara wants to hit a high note.
10:17Here we are, the wonderful Robert Wolfe.
10:20Hello, darling.
10:21With one of the museum's steam-powered organs.
10:24The fourth largest Wurlitzer in Europe.
10:30Let's see if the feet are going.
10:33Come on, get the feet going.
10:35Come on.
10:36Come on, Carl.
10:38Come on, Carl.
10:39Come on, Carl.
10:56There's water under the bridge and we're just looking forward to payment day and hopefully
11:00that hasn't affected how much they've paid us.
11:03Yeah.
11:03Liz and Carl have been absolute professionals about food back.
11:07So, all credit to them.
11:08And with the visit coming to its curtain call.
11:15There's just time for a quick spin around the fairground.
11:18Giddy up.
11:19Away we go.
11:23Carl, you look like you're holding on for dear life, mate.
11:25And the hosts think they're on the final furlong.
11:29The day's gone great.
11:30Full steam ahead.
11:32Woo-woo!
11:40The third visit of the week is to Thursford in Norfolk
11:44and Holly Lodge Bed and Breakfast
11:46where hosts Barbara and Elizabeth have invited their guests for a drink in the lounge.
11:51Cheers, everybody.
11:53Cheers.
11:54Cheers, Barbara.
11:55And as the group whet their whistles,
11:57Helen wants the lowdown on the background.
12:00When did you take on the B&B?
12:03It was about five years ago, Helen.
12:05And I was thrilled to be able to embark on hospitality again.
12:12I retired as an air hostess a long time ago.
12:15So, it was great to be able to get out there.
12:18So, how long ago did you retire from that?
12:20About 35 years ago, Carl.
12:23And that's where you've got your flair for hospitality from.
12:26Well, thank you, Carl.
12:27Flair for hospitality.
12:29But at 35,000 feet, serving chicken and beef.
12:32Chicken and beef, chicken and beef, chicken and beef.
12:35I could definitely picture her as an air hostess, yeah.
12:38I enjoy people who are flamboyant, who are enjoying themselves.
12:44And Barbara just, she's got all of it.
12:47Any fun stories while you've been open here?
12:51There's a lot, Carl.
12:52But one springs to mind.
12:54The usual thing, everybody checked out.
12:56Normally, I knock, knock, knock, room service.
13:00I didn't knock.
13:02And there was a lady completely stuck naked on the bed.
13:06Oh, my God.
13:07So, her eyes and my eyes met.
13:10And I was run out of that room, came downstairs, huffing and puffing,
13:14and blamed the girls down here.
13:16The moral of the story is, do lock your rooms if you're planning to do anything.
13:21We're leaving our door open.
13:25I'll be there, Carl.
13:26I'll be there.
13:28The atmosphere in the group continues to be fun and...
13:33Upbeat.
13:33Upbeat.
13:34Despite the competition.
13:36I think we ought to lock our room, though, because I do like to sleep naked.
13:42Naked truth exposed.
13:44Barbara wants to hear if Helen and Carl have been making sheep's eyes
13:48at their accommodation.
13:49How are you finding the shepherd's hut?
13:52It's beautiful.
13:53It's definitely been barbified in there.
13:56Glad you're putting the shepherd's hut, because it's similar to our business.
13:59We've got a glamping site.
14:01Oh, wow.
14:03Oh, we're going, oh, God, wait till Barbara finds out.
14:06I know.
14:07She went to boarding school.
14:08She'll be absolutely fine.
14:09I'm right up for this, I can assure you.
14:12I really, really am.
14:14We are excited.
14:15If there's any way I'd like to go glamping, it's at your glamp site.
14:18Yes.
14:19Yes, Carl.
14:20So, I reckon Helen and Carl's glamping is going to be spot on.
14:27Top notch.
14:28Top notch.
14:29It's the best you will get glamping ever.
14:33Drink's done, it's off to bed for the guests.
14:36What a lovely room.
14:37It's beautiful, isn't it?
14:39Yeah.
14:39Night-night.
14:40Night-night.
14:44It's a new day in Thursford, and the guests are rising and shining.
14:49Come in.
14:51Good morning.
14:53So, how did you sleep?
14:54Really well.
14:55The bed's really comfortable.
14:56How did you sleep?
14:58I slept very well, thank you.
14:59How about you?
15:00Amazingly well.
15:01But in the shepherd's hut, Carl's all of a lather.
15:04Helen, there's nowhere to hang these at all.
15:07You'll have to come and take them off me.
15:09Back in the main house, and with breakfast pre-orders in the night before,
15:14Barbara and her team are firing up a feast.
15:17I think we're ready to go, and we're feeling pretty confident.
15:21We do pride ourselves on a very good Norfolk breakfast.
15:24And with the guests seated...
15:26Good morning, everybody.
15:28Good morning.
15:29Barbara's on hand with the beverages.
15:32Green tea is here for you, Liz.
15:35I've got a cup of coffee for you here, and a coffee for you.
15:39Thank you so much.
15:40Drink's delivered.
15:41Thanks, Barbara.
15:42You're welcome.
15:43Liz cooks up a question.
15:45So, how does everyone feel about Barbara and Elizabeth's hosting?
15:49The experience, I definitely think, would have been night and day without Barbara and Elizabeth.
15:55Yeah.
15:55They're a great pairing.
15:57They make a great double act.
15:58They do, yeah.
15:59I think everyone should have a bit of Elizabeth and Barbara in their lives.
16:03Absolutely.
16:04Barbara is as mad as a box of frogs, yes, definitely, in a good way.
16:09In a very good way.
16:10We've absolutely loved her as Anna Elizabeth's company.
16:14Back in the kitchen, the plates are piled.
16:17Half lodge for you, Helen.
16:19Perfect.
16:19Thank you, Barbara.
16:20I hope that's perfect.
16:22And you were having a full lodge.
16:24An omelette for you.
16:26Thanks, Barbara.
16:27I hope you enjoy that.
16:28It's lovely.
16:30Oh, my good God.
16:32Perfect.
16:33Just have a like an egg.
16:35Yeah, perfectly cooked.
16:40The fried bread is really, really nice.
16:43You know, it tastes perfect.
16:44The bacon has got a beautiful crisp around the edge.
16:47Everything on this plate is lovely.
16:49And the sausage is really nice as well.
16:51It's got a great flavour to it.
16:52It is really, really delicious.
16:55This morning's breakfast was really good.
16:57Oh, it's beautiful.
16:59I'll have that again now.
17:02Stomachs lined.
17:03Carl wants to clean something up with Helen.
17:05We know that you're thorough with your checks,
17:08so I'm assuming you probably check on your cleaners' work.
17:11Maybe, while I've gone through quite a lot of housekeepers.
17:16Well, we've had to lay off ours.
17:17Us too.
17:20Well, we're all expecting something really exceptional.
17:24And why?
17:25We've all had your feedback.
17:27Yeah.
17:27Now, I am having heart palpitations.
17:31I'm going to be hung, drawn and quartered.
17:34Our feedback definitely ruffles some feathers,
17:37and I'm just hoping that they're all going to judge us fairly
17:40and not tit for tat.
17:42Breakfast done.
17:43The guests head back to their rooms
17:45to complete their anonymous feedback forms.
17:47Here we go, then.
17:48Let's go for it.
17:50How were your hosts at Holly Lodge Beds and Breakfast?
17:54Excellent hosts.
17:56A ten.
17:56I definitely agree.
17:58How clean was Holly Lodge B&B?
18:00Couldn't find a speck of dust.
18:02It's got to be a ten.
18:03It's got to be a ten.
18:04There were hairs in the bed.
18:06A hair in the fridge.
18:08And there was dust in the bed frame.
18:10Seven.
18:11I agree.
18:12How were the facilities?
18:13Great selection on drinks tray.
18:16Grout missing on the shower floor.
18:17Going with a nine?
18:19Yeah.
18:20The facilities here are exceptional.
18:22All the luxury fittings and extra touches.
18:25Definitely.
18:26It's got to be a ten.
18:27Another ten.
18:29Gorgeous sheppertop, but there was no shower caddy.
18:32Nine.
18:33I agree.
18:34How did you sleep?
18:36Great night.
18:37Sleep.
18:38Ten.
18:39Definite ten.
18:40Fantastic night sleep.
18:41It's got to be a ten again.
18:43How was the breakfast?
18:44All fresh, tasty produce.
18:47It's got to be a ten, hasn't it?
18:49It's got to be a ten.
18:49Final question?
18:51Would you stay here again?
18:52Definitely.
18:54Yes.
18:55Big fat yes.
18:56Apart from the few very miny little things, I would stay again.
19:02Yes, definitely.
19:06Now the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:10I think that's right.
19:11The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:14But for now, Barbara and Elizabeth can find out if Christmas came early at Holly Lodge.
19:20Now here's for the truth.
19:22Or not.
19:24How clean was Holly Lodge B&B?
19:26Ten.
