00:00Negotiations to end the war with Iran are reportedly progressing, but that doesn't mean
00:04it's quite time to break out the special pens for a treaty signing just yet. The Post's
00:09Washington reporter Caitlin Dornbaugh spoke to the president about it all, and she filled
00:13me in.
00:13He told me that we are not quite to the point of needing another round of in-person negotiations
00:19in Pakistan for a deal with Iran, but there is considerable progress being made, and that
00:25is coming in the form of a number of one-page documents. They're trying to decide which
00:31one they're going to select, but a number of one-page documents that actually lay out several
00:36demands that the U.S. and Iran could use to establish a framework for a peace deal. Now,
00:43of topics of discussion are that enriched uranium that still is beneath the surface of Iran following
00:53the strikes on Iranian nuclear sites last summer. Also, how long Iran will go without enriching
01:02more uranium? Now, the president wants them never to enrich uranium again, but maybe a five-year
01:11moratorium, 15-year moratorium. We still don't have details on exactly which one will be selected,
01:18but a number of these issues are coming up, and it is showing some semblance of progress in the
01:26peace negotiations as they stand.
01:28While all those machinations continue, another big player has entered the fray, China. Iran's
01:33foreign minister, Abbas Aragqi, met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday
01:38and was urged to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Wang reportedly said, quote,
01:43China believes that a comprehensive cessation of hostilities should not be delayed. Any
01:49reigniting of hostilities is even less desirable, and sticking to negotiations is particularly
01:54important. How important? Well, by some estimates, more than a third of China's oil is shipped through
01:59the Strait. This is also a big deal because President Trump is heading to Beijing next week
02:04to meet with President Xi Jinping, and Iran is going to hang heavy above that meeting.
