28:41Whilst at work, Monaghan receives a text message,
28:44seemingly from Evie.
28:46I've taken the drugs and I don't want to be here anymore
28:48and I don't want to help.
28:50His aunt goes round to the house to check on Evie
28:53and that's when they find Evie
28:55in a really dangerous situation medically
28:57and an ambulance is called.
29:02Jordan returns to the address.
29:05The paramedics are there, the police are there
29:07and he cries and he also claims to give over
29:13the blister packs of the medication
29:15that he thought Evie might be taking.
29:18They don't know it yet, but Monaghan has Evie's phone.
29:24Bernard and his wife have no idea the events
29:27which are unfolding across town.
29:30We're sat there watching telly
29:31about ten past ten at night.
29:35Police sergeant knocks on the door.
29:37Can I come in?
29:39Well, what's up?
29:40Well, can I come in? I'll tell you.
29:42Evie Adams, yeah.
29:44Sadly, she's passed away.
29:45She's committed suicide.
29:53I was sat at work.
29:55I'd just finished a night shift.
29:56I was sat at work.
29:57And I started laughing.
29:58And I was like, she can't be dead.
30:00Like, she said she was going to ring me.
30:03Like, she'd never not ring me.
30:05I'm sorry.
30:07Her family and friends are struggling
30:09to understand what has happened to Evie.
30:12Why would she commit suicide?
30:14She wouldn't miss the child for anything.
30:19I mean, if it meant walking from London, she'd walk.
30:22She just would not miss that contact.
30:25She'd never leave a child, ever.
30:26She just wouldn't do that.
30:30I just knew something inside of me,
30:32just knew that she wasn't to blame.
30:34He was.

30:37of killing his children by people in the community.
30:40And news of Evie's death quickly spreads online.

30:49it were big.

30:55and now she's dead.

31:01Despite initial evidence suggesting suicide,
31:05after just 24 hours,
31:07the police have another theory.
31:10Forced marriage, we need to turn around
31:11and to all the streets.
31:14They were 99% sure
31:16that it wasn't suicide.
31:22She'd been murdered.
31:26Monaghan is a key suspect,
31:29but the police have no evidence to charge him.
31:38As investigators try to piece together
31:41what has happened to Evie Adams,
31:44her suspected killer, Jordan Monaghan,
31:47is back to his old ways,
31:49drinking and gambling down at the local pub.
31:52He soon makes friends at the bar
31:54with Jake Marsden and Sue Dorries.
31:59The only story I knew for a long time
32:01was Evie wasn't so well,

32:04and committed suicide purposely.

32:19because he seemed really sad.
32:28He went to a solicitor,
32:30so she couldn't actually have a funeral
32:33for over a month
32:34because we were waiting for some decision
32:36on one thing and another.
32:39You know, there was a lot of concerns
32:41because he threatened to turn up at the funeral
32:44and firebomb the place.
32:47My goddy body moved out of town
32:50because we expected him breaking in.
32:54You know, that's the type of person they were.
32:57Monaghan's playing the role
32:58of being a grieving partner.
33:01My partner, Evie, committed suicide.
33:04He's trying to elicit sympathy.
33:07He's trying to get the community on side.
33:10At the same time, it's another form of control.
33:14He's demonstrating the same level of control
33:16that he did when Evie was alive.
33:19This is just another manifestation
33:21of his need to have power
33:22to obliterate her personality.
33:25And I also get the sense
33:27this is a kind of verbal staging behaviour.
33:30He's trying to plant seeds in the community
33:33as to what happened to Evie
33:36that isn't true.
33:37He's trying to plant the seed
33:38that she took her own life
33:40whereas, in fact, Monaghan killed her.
33:48Bernard is determined
33:50to keep Monaghan away from the funeral.
33:53But Monaghan himself has other ideas.
33:58Perhaps looking for an opportunity
34:00to plant evidence.
34:02Jordan asks a mutual friend
34:04to put a photograph in Evie's coffin.
34:08And so he invites the friend over to the house
34:11to get this photo.
34:13He picked something up
34:15and this suicide note
34:18dropped out of the picture from him.
34:21But it weren't even at the house.
34:23This was his parents' house.
34:25You know, it just doesn't make sense.
34:29Handwriting experts are drafted in
34:31to try and make sense of this new evidence.
34:35Evie's funeral goes ahead.
34:37There was police at gates going in.
34:40All different exits.
34:42And we were up for the wake after.
34:44The police was outside there,
34:46back and front, all the time.
34:51It wasn't sad.
34:53It was happy.
34:54Everybody were there
34:55to celebrate Evie's life.
34:58Monaghan remains out on bail.
35:00He surrounds himself with people
35:03who are unaware of his secrets.
35:05He ended up being my, like,
35:07little drinking partner type thing.
35:09Parting in crime.
35:09And, yeah, he was always fun
35:12and brought a good laugh.
35:15We had a little bit of a party
35:17at the pub for my birthday.
35:19And it was funny
35:20because there was a couple of girls,
35:23Polish girls come in.
35:25Really nice girls.
35:26And they were talking to Jake and Jordan.
35:28And they were like,
35:28ooh, and Jordan's coming up.
35:29He went, I don't know what to do.
35:31He said, I've never been out with a girl
35:33since I went out with Evie.
35:35He said, I just, I'm a bit nervous.
35:37In the wake of such a profound loss,
35:40the anger and frustration
35:42is impossible to ignore.
35:44He's taken my best friend's life
35:46and he's out on bail walking round
35:47and he could be talking to any other girls
35:50who are none the wiser
35:52about what's just happened in his life.
35:55So, yeah, I was really angry.
35:59He's moved on, got away with that,
36:02killed his two children,
36:03got away with that,
36:03killed Evie, got away with that.
36:05God, I'm good.
36:05I'm good at this.
36:06Yeah, this is my life.
36:08But what he doesn't know
36:10is that actually the toxicology
36:12in Evie's body is looked at
36:14and there's concerns about the level of drugs.
36:16The report stated that the opiate levels
36:18in Evie's blood
36:19were the equivalent of taking 20 Tramadol.
36:22Any more than two would make somebody unwell.
36:25Police now know what caused Evie's death,
36:28but they still need to find proof
36:30of who caused it.
36:33It's been nine months since Evie was poisoned
36:36and Monaghan is moving on.
36:40He always had a big wallet full of cash
36:43and always seemed to,
36:45well, if he wanted something,
36:46and he could just pay for it.
36:48Well, never like a little bit,
36:50it was always a big amount of money.
36:54But he was constantly with everybody,
36:56do they need to lend some money?
36:58I was like,
37:00there's just something not right.
37:02There's something not sitting right.
37:05I started to get,
37:06seem more shady and shadier
37:08as the time went on.
37:10As Monaghan becomes more elusive,
37:13he's quick to offer an explanation to his friends.
37:17He'd go and see his solicitor
37:18and go missing for a few days.
37:19So that used to be on a Monday,
37:22Monday to a Thursday,
37:24and then he'd be back on a Friday.
37:26And he'd be like,
37:27oh, we've been a week.
37:28I've been working.
37:31But then as it went on and went on,
37:33that's how it more come out,
37:34with seeing the solicitor.
37:35I had to stay at sales for a few days for questioning,
37:38and then you'd ask why you were,
37:40what you were being questioned for.
37:41I was suspicious.
37:46Lee's suspicions grow
37:47following an argument at the pub
37:50when a woman,
37:51a friend of Monaghan's ex-partner,
37:54mentions having heard about Evie's death.
37:57She was calling him a murderer.
37:58That was my first real proper inkling
38:01with everything into Evie
38:03and the other two children.
38:05She told him a murderer,
38:06she told him, you've killed your kids,
38:08you've killed your ex,
38:09you've done this,
38:10and you will get what's coming to you.
38:12And then you start thinking,
38:13well, these accusations have come out,
38:15so many of them.
38:17There's got to be some truth here.
38:20He didn't come across as dangerous to anybody.
38:22He didn't.
38:23He was just a young lad.
38:25He didn't pose any threat to nobody.
38:28You know, he just seemed a happy,
38:31sometimes sad,
38:32because obviously of what had happened to him.
38:34But the rest of the time,
38:35he was just having a drink
38:37and having a laugh with everybody.
38:39But we were all dragged under an illusion.
38:45Sue is surprised to learn the truth
38:47about her friend Monaghan
38:48when she's visited by the police.
38:51They said to me then about children.
38:53And they said,
38:54do not let him anywhere near children.
38:57He is not allowed in the vicinity of children.
39:00And I'm like, why?
39:02And the police asked me,
39:03what did I know about his children?
39:05I said, well, I knew that they'd passed away.
39:07I said, but it was like six years ago.
39:10I said, for a genetic,
39:12something genetic that they'd died of.
39:14The police are closing in.
39:17Detectors are then getting the best experts they can find.
39:21And we talk about 12 experts from a wide range of disciplines
39:25to just look at not just Evie's death,
39:29but also the death of the two children.
39:31As part of the investigation,
39:33officers examined Jordan's phone
39:36and accessed his WhatsApp messages.
39:39And they uncovered clear evidence
39:42of him ordering and purchasing the drugs
39:46that were later found in Evie's body after her death.
39:51This evidence strongly indicates
39:54that Jordan was not only buying the drugs,
39:57but also administering them to Evie.
40:05Jordan is then re-arrested
40:07and he's charged with the murder
40:09of his two children and of Evie.
40:13In October 2021,
40:16Jordan Monaghan appears at Preston Crown Court.
40:20The friends who thought they knew him appear in court too.
40:25Made me sick.
40:26I'd been in association with somebody that could do something.
40:30That evil.
40:32And not flinch.
40:35Not flinch.
40:37You know when you look at someone
40:38and you can see that they're sorry?
40:40He didn't look like that in court.
40:42And he was sat at the back row.
40:44So he was sat at the very back.
40:46He was just slouched,
40:48like he knew what was coming anywhere.
40:50He knew he was already going to stay in prison
40:52for the majority of his life.
40:53He knew he was going to get found guilty.
40:56He knew his time was up of the lies that he'd been telling.
41:01Felt like he'd been tricked.
41:02Whoever this person was,
41:03it was just a big cover-up and a big fake
41:06and all these laughable times and memories I've had
41:09aren't even real.
41:10How can he stand there and be sad over Evie's death
41:17and when the anniversary of her birthday was be sad
41:21and show us all pictures of how much he loved her
41:23and all the rest of it
41:25when apparently he did this to her.
41:29And leaving all us lot thinking everything was fine,
41:34that a man could do something like that,
41:36that's just...
41:38It's insane to me that somebody can do that.
41:42During the trial,
41:43a linguistics expert presents evidence on the suicide note.
41:47The particular thing they asked me about in court
41:49was a phone call that Jordan told me about.
41:51He said he'd had a number of phone calls when Evie died,
41:53the night Evie died,
41:55that he'd missed on his phone
41:56and he was working in a warehouse.
41:58And then when he eventually answered,
42:00they told him that Evie had died.
42:02In my eyes,
42:03if someone roamed me and told me my girlfriend had died,
42:06that you made out your love so dearly,
42:09he'd have dropped everything at work and gone straight home.
42:11He finished his shift and then went home.
42:12I thought, well, he's getting sent down.
42:15It's got this serious.
42:18So, like I said,
42:19because nobody ever spoke about it for a long time,
42:21nobody knew how serious it was.
42:24Yeah, at that point, I thought, yeah, he's going down.
42:32Jordan Monaghan is found guilty of murdering
42:35his 21-month-old son,
42:38his one-month-old daughter
42:39and 23-year-old Evie Adams.
42:53I hate him, but I don't want him to die.
42:55I don't want him to take the coward's way out
42:57and commit suicide.
42:58I want him to pay for exactly what he's done
43:00to them babies and to Evie
43:03because if he takes the coward's way out
43:05and kills himself,
43:06then that's just what he wants to do.
43:08That's his choice.
43:09And no, he shouldn't have a choice anymore.
43:12Evie didn't have a choice,
43:13so why does he get a choice?
43:19Jordan Monaghan is sentenced to life imprisonment
43:21with a minimum term of 40 years.
43:25There's no doubt this guy,
43:27had he not been arrested for the murder of Evie,
43:30would have gone on
43:31and perpetrated the exact same type of behaviours
43:34that Evie fell foul of.
43:36Definitely don't feel like I've got justice for Evie.

43:44I don't think that even touches the sides with this.
43:46He's much worse than that.
