00:03If you've been living in Newcastle for the past 50 years, you've probably got
00:06some memories of the Star Hotel. It's now been recognised on the state's
00:11heritage register. Few would argue that it's most significant moment in the
00:16building's history was the Star Hotel riot that took place here in September
00:201979. On the final night of trade, the hotel made global headlines when thousands of
00:41patrons took to the streets to protest about the forced curfew at 10 o'clock. Police cars
00:47were overturned and officers were pelted with rocks and beer bottles as violence
00:51spilled out onto the neighbouring streets. It took more than two hours to control
00:55the chaos and turn the Star Hotel into the stuff of legend for time immemorial.
