Scotland lost their opening group game 2-1 to Brazil. Norway drew with Morocco.
Transcript
00:00...atmosphere in a football sense here in the wine-growing region of Bordeaux
00:04as Scotland take on a Norwegian side they should know a lot about.
00:09Five of their starting line-up and six of their substitutes
00:12earn their living in the English Premier League.
00:16There's been a theory around that a draw would suit Norway better than Scotland
00:19but I'm not so sure, bearing in mind that in their last group matches
00:23Norway played Brazil while Scotland faced Morocco.
00:28But the incentive is there for both
00:30because neither country has ever got past the first round of the World Cup Finals.
00:38And on a lovely, dry, warm afternoon in Bordeaux
00:43the stadium absolutely packed and the Scottish team is unchanged.
00:49There was speculation about the possibility of the wing-backs being moved
00:53or Darren Jackson dropping out for Billy McKinley
00:56but Craig Brown, who is rapidly becoming one of the most helpful coaches here at the World Cup
01:01has decided to stick with the personnel that face Brazil.
01:08As for Norway, well, they've made three changes.
01:12Egil Olsen has decided that Meeklund, Leonardsson and Solskjaer will drop out
01:19and into a five-man midfield come number six Sol Bakken,
01:23number 21 Reset and number 22 Strand.
01:30Scotland are in a chain strip today, yellow shirts and black shorts
01:35and this match, which has always looked to be the one that might determine
01:39whether or not Scotland go further in this competition, gets underway
01:43with Lambert pumping the ball forward, which is something that we're expecting Norway to do quite often this afternoon.
01:54Goalkeeper Rudos, the captain, from Tottenham.
02:01And that's aimed towards Reset, who got the header on and Hendry wants Leighton to collect this.
02:06They were aiming at two tall men there, Reset who started on the left
02:10and Torre André Flew, who's playing in the centre.
02:15This is John Collins.
02:19Did well there.
02:20Looking for jury.
02:22And they've got a spare man at the back, the Scots.
02:24Oh, and so close.
02:28Christian Daly
02:30coming in here from left wing back
02:33and the header went across the goal.
02:36Well, it was absolutely perfect play.
02:38Collins selling the dummy,
02:39driving it forward with his right foot.
02:41A super break by Daly
02:43to get into the six-yard box at an angle.
02:47Scotland have a good record against Norway, incidentally.
02:49They've played 11 times.
02:51Scotland have won seven.
02:52Three draws and only one defeat.
02:54The only Norwegian victory was back in Bergen in 1963.
03:00Here comes Gallagher.
03:02It's a bit long,
03:03but Egan goes across to Markin nonetheless
03:05and Gallagher gets his cross in
03:06and jury.
03:08Oh, it dropped just the other side of the post.
03:11What an excellent cross by Gallagher
03:13when he looked to be running out of room here,
03:15hooked back beautifully.
03:16Grotos having to be watchful
03:18because jury's header,
03:19not a lot of place on it,
03:20it drops away.
03:27This is Calderwood.
03:28And Gallagher goes in behind the defender
03:31who was Jonsson.
03:32That was a fabulous ball,
03:34a searching ball.
03:34Gallagher can always be relied upon
03:36to seek out the spaces.
03:38He's making some telling runs,
03:40is Gallagher,
03:41and it's a good combination with jury.
03:46In fact,
03:46jury is also a bit of a long throw merchant
03:48and Colin Hendry knows about that
03:50because he's come trotting up
03:51into the penalty area here.
03:54And that was Hendry,
03:55and it's going to come back to jury.
03:58Oh,
03:58brought down by Bjornaby,
04:00but where was it?
04:01Referee says outside.
04:02The Hungarian referee race to the spot.
04:05It will be a free kick.
04:10I'm in two minds about that
04:12because if it happens on the line,
04:13it's a penalty,
04:14you know.
04:15Or should be.
04:19That is the closest of calls here,
04:22but it's a free kick to Scotland.
04:24It could still be dangerous.
04:26Collins has come across with the left foot.
04:29Hendry and jury both in there.
04:31Christian Daly's in there too.
04:35And they've left it for Lambert
04:36and Collins.
04:38Oh,
04:38and Hendry.
04:40Free kick given.
04:42Goodness.
04:43I'm,
04:43I really have to say,
04:44David Pleat,
04:45that was one of the closest calls
04:46of this World Cup.
04:47Should it have been a penalty
04:48or a free kick?
04:49we've got the benefit of hindsight.
04:50We can look at the replay
04:51and it was on the line.
04:53The referee immediately,
04:54and he wasn't far from him,
04:55immediately rushed to it
04:57because he knew there was controversy
04:58and he pointed literally
04:59to the blade of grass
05:00where he thought it happened.
05:04Now then,
05:05this is Strand for Norway
05:06who got away nicely.
05:07He's got three men up with him,
05:08which is Havard Flo,
05:09which is Sol Bakken.
05:10Danger here for Scotland.
05:12And Sol Bakken saw them
05:13and had a runner on the far side
05:14and a real chance for Norway that.
05:19And they've escaped Scotland
05:22with a bit of difficulty.
05:28It was Strand,
05:30the number 22,
05:31who came in here
05:32and a good diving block there.
05:35It was Colin Hendry,
05:36I think.
05:38There we see Hendry
05:39just do enough
05:40to put Strand off.
05:46So assured in midfield Scotland
05:48when they pass it around
05:49between Lambert and Collins
05:50and working it out again
05:51to Daly.
05:52Oh,
05:53and he's got by his man yet again.
05:54Three waiting in the centre.
05:56Daly's cross,
05:57it's just behind Gordon Dury.
05:59A better ball there
06:00and Scotland had real chances
06:01and Daly is making
06:02a real mockery of Henningberg.
06:08I think Scotland really need
06:11to feed as much as possible
06:12the left side.
06:13That's where they're having
06:14the most of their success.
06:16This is Strand though
06:17for Norway
06:17and he gets across him
06:19and Sol Bakken!
06:21That's their best effort
06:22of the half,
06:23the Norwegians.
06:24It was well set up
06:27and a shooting chance here
06:28for number six.
06:31Stala Sol Bakken
06:32who had a short spell
06:33with Wimbledon this season.
06:34They couldn't quite keep it down
06:36but at least he got into the box
06:37for the ball
06:37when it was played back to him.
06:42Boisterous stuff here
06:43in Bordeaux.
06:51Collins.
06:52Fury.
06:56And it's Tom Boyd
06:58who's made an extra man up front
06:59now for Scotland.
07:00Number three.
07:01Back heel to Daly.
07:03And they forced a corner
07:04out of that.
07:05Inventive stuff
07:06from the number three
07:08there, Tom Boyd.
07:13Wilder just over five minutes
07:15to go in the first half.
07:16Wouldn't it be a good time
07:17for Scotland to score?
07:18Colder what is up
07:19in the six-yard box.
07:28The referee's seen a can or something
07:30in the back of the goal net there
07:31which has delayed things.
07:32Dury and Gallagher are waiting.
07:34Hendry is behind them.
07:35It's played short to Gallagher.
07:37It's a good little turn.
07:39Daly.
07:40Off the line by Bjornaby Hendry.
07:44Scotland so close again.
07:47Another fine set-piece corner.
07:53And still they keep it going
07:54with Burley.
07:55Jackson.
07:56Nice back heel.
07:58This is Lambert.
07:59Hendry stood in the penalty area
08:00following the corner.
08:02And John Collins on the left foot.
08:05And this is Daly.
08:07Still well packed in there,
08:08by the Scots.
08:12Burley.
08:18Well, really unlucky again.
08:20The man on the post
08:20saved Norway.
08:24Here's Solvaken.
08:25It's a very good challenge
08:26in the middle of the field
08:27by Paul Lambert of Celtic.
08:30And it's a good delivery as well
08:32out to Daly.
08:33Now then,
08:34Scotland have got movement again
08:36with Durian Gallagher in the centre.
08:38Being joined now by Burley.
08:39That's Daly's cross.
08:41But it's disappointing.
08:42And it's a goal kick.
08:52Half-time arrived.
08:53Scotland have been determined.
08:55They've been dynamic.
08:57The only thing that they've missed really
08:59is decisiveness in front of goal.
09:01One or two near squeaks
09:03for Norway
09:03who must be glad
09:04as they go off
09:05that the half-time score
09:06is still
09:07Scotland nil
09:08Norway nil.
09:17So at the start of the second half
09:18a pat on the back
09:19for the two goalkeepers
09:20that I didn't have a chance
09:21to give them earlier.
09:21It was a good save
09:22by Jim Leighton
09:23from Strand
09:25early on in the game
09:26when Norway had one
09:26of their rare attacks.
09:27And when Daly's header
09:29was cleared off the line
09:31by Strand
09:33at the other end
09:34I think Grodos
09:35probably was there
09:36to catch it anyway.
09:37So keepers have played
09:38their part
09:39in keeping this to nil-nil.
09:40That's Sol Bakken.
09:42To André Flo
09:43and the other Flo
09:46in the centre.
09:46Oh and there is
09:47Havard Flo!
09:48And Norway have scored
09:49in the first seconds
09:51of the second half.
09:53And it's Havard Flo!
09:57who has opened
09:59the account here
09:59for the Norwegians
10:00and Scotland
10:01on their heels.
10:04Within a minute
10:05of the second half
10:07starting
10:07Jim Leighton
10:08is beaten.
10:09Egil Olsen
10:10what did he say
10:11at half time?
10:12It had an immediate effect.
10:14And here's Reset
10:15the man who set
10:16the play up here
10:17against Colin Calderwood.
10:18He went outside him.
10:20It was a deep cross
10:21curling away from Leighton
10:22and Havard Flo
10:23has come in
10:24virtually unchallenged
10:25on the far post.
10:27It was a fantastic cross.
10:28He just made
10:29half a yard
10:30on Calderwood
10:30to whip that ball in.
10:31It was perfectly placed
10:32in the six-yard box.
10:34Good position
10:34by the scorer.
10:36But I have to say
10:36there was a lack
10:37of concentration there
10:38because there was
10:39an injury to Lambert.
10:40Lambert was down
10:41in the centre circle.
10:42I think the Scots
10:43briefly hesitated
10:44and I think
10:45they lost their concentration.
10:47Lambert now is up
10:48he's limping
10:48but there's been
10:49greater damage done.
10:51Certainly has
10:52but immediately
10:52here's Gallagher
10:53for Scotland.
10:54A lot of the crowd
10:54hadn't taken their seats
10:56for the second half
10:56when that happened.
10:57There are people
10:57still coming into the stadium
10:59and Norway
11:00who were forced back
11:02for so much
11:03of the first half
11:04now take
11:05what could be
11:06a priceless lead
11:07with that header.
11:10Now the goal scorer
11:12Havard Flo
11:13who's the cousin
11:14of Tor Andre
11:15who's in the centre
11:15there now
11:16who gets the ball away
11:17and it's Tor Andre
11:18Flo this time
11:19for Norway
11:20and he's got support
11:21on both sides here.
11:24Pushed back
11:25to Bjornaby
11:28and Scotland
11:29are rocking
11:29at the moment
11:30there's no question
11:31about that.
11:32Norway
11:34suddenly lifted
11:36as Solbaken
11:37plays it forward
11:38to reset
11:40and I don't know
11:41if it was
11:42Christian Daly's
11:43responsibility
11:43on this side
11:44of the pitch
11:44when that header
11:45went in
11:45but somebody
11:46should have
11:46surely been
11:47closer to him.
11:48Here we see Flo
11:49showing a little bit
11:50of invention
11:51around the edge
11:51of the box
11:52we did say
11:53before half time
11:53Scotland had it
11:54nice rhythm
11:56in that first period
11:57and sometimes
11:58half time
11:58just breaks that
11:59and they've certainly
12:01had a loss
12:01of concentration
12:02when Lambert
12:03went injured there
12:04and they were
12:04shorter players
12:05in the box
12:05they used to call
12:06that the pomo position
12:07where he scored
12:08from
12:08position
12:09and maximum
12:09opportunity
12:10in the coaching book
12:11he's onside here
12:12it's Strand
12:12there are two
12:13waiting in the centre
12:14oh and only a touch
12:16was needed
12:16in Scotland
12:17were two down
12:23well it's all
12:24going rather wrong
12:25here for Craig Brown's
12:26team
12:26that crosses by Strand
12:27there are
12:28Tor Andre
12:29Flo was close to it
12:35this is Ronnie Janssen
12:39was that a bit late
12:40from Jackson
12:42oh this is trouble
12:43for Jackson
12:44another yellow
12:45that means he'll
12:46miss the third match
12:47Jackson
12:47he will not be able
12:48to play against
12:49Morocco
12:49it's his second
12:50booking of the
12:51tournament
12:53just a sign
12:54the Scots have
12:55lost the composure
12:56they had in the
12:57first half
13:07this is Boyd
13:09and Scotland
13:10look for the
13:10equaliser
13:12Daly
13:14Gordon Jury
13:15now crossing
13:16the ball
13:16and as a chance
13:17here on the far
13:18side of
13:19McNamara
13:19who's
13:20only just come on
13:21gets into a
13:22telling position
13:29just got up there
13:30as the last man
13:31on the far side
13:32of the penalty area
13:33and really got the
13:34better
13:34of Jakobsen
13:35who himself
13:36has just joined
13:37the game
13:40this is Lambert
13:44yes sir
13:46we're to the
13:46right here
13:47of Hendry
13:48and Burley
13:49able to charge
13:50on through the
13:51centre now
13:51and he's just
13:52the player
13:53for it
13:53Burley
13:54yes
13:55he's done it
13:56the tactics
13:57have worked
13:58it's Craig Burley
13:59for Scotland
14:02it's 1-1
14:03and they're still
14:04very much
14:05in the World Cup
14:06Craig Brown
14:09with a reorganisation
14:11here which
14:11released Craig Burley
14:13from wing back
14:13to play more centrally
14:14and he lobs that
14:16beautifully
14:16over Grodos
14:17to put Scotland
14:19back in the game
14:22there was a great
14:23pass as well
14:23by Davey Weir
14:25Egan came across
14:26at the last second
14:27Ronnie Jonsson
14:29that was caught
14:30by the ball
14:30over the top
14:31and Craig Burley
14:32lifts it delightfully
14:33over Frodo Grodos
14:35what a relief
14:36for Scotland
14:39they've used the space
14:40behind that tighter
14:41back line
14:42they've used it well
14:44well Burley
14:45who got off the mark
14:46for his country
14:46in one of the warm-up
14:47games against Colombia
14:48has scored a much
14:49more important goal
14:50here
14:51just coming up
14:52to the halfway point
14:53in the second half
14:54and Bordeaux
14:56suddenly
14:57a scene of
14:58great Scottish
14:59celebration
15:06nice and neat
15:07McNamara
15:09Burley
15:12oh and they've got a chance
15:13here
15:13Gallagher trying to go
15:14through
15:15Gallagher for Scotland
15:18well in the end
15:19he did get a shot in
15:20but he stabbed it
15:21straight at Grodos
15:22and anything can happen
15:23in this match now
15:23you wouldn't know
15:24quite what to expect next
15:36here is Scotland
15:37looking the lively
15:38at Gallagher
15:38and it's Thurien
15:39to his right
15:40is Burley again
15:41Burley
15:42what a save
15:43by Grodos
15:46oh Burley could have
15:47had his second
15:48and made
15:51Scotland
15:51hot favourites
15:53to go through
15:53if that had gone in
15:55Grodos responded well
16:08Daly coming in
16:09it was Henningberg who cleared
16:11and Norway desperate for some sort of breather at the moment
16:14from their defensive duties
16:16it's number 10
16:17and Regdahl who thumps it forward
16:18Jakobsen is chasing this
16:25it's Lambert
16:26and Scotland can work it right
16:28with Burley
16:28and nobody's picking up
16:30McNamara when he makes
16:31these breaks from right back
16:32and Scotland are in full flow here
16:34and Gallagher can get in
16:37Jakobsen just stood and watched
16:38McNamara go
16:40now
16:41Örstenstadt
16:43looking for Torandre Flo
16:46Weir
16:47to Daly
16:53and you almost feel at the moment
16:55as if Norway would be happy
16:56to hang on for a draw
16:57this is jury for Scotland
16:59but there's always the danger
17:01that something unexpected might happen
17:03Jakobsen now
17:04has hardly been in the game at all
17:05Strand is making the way
17:07through the centre too
17:08this is Örstenstadt
17:13poorly directed header there
17:14from Örstenstadt
17:18Scotland have got one more substitution
17:20up their sleeve if they need it
17:21Norway have played their full hand
17:23that's turned on beautifully
17:24by Gordon Dury
17:25to Burley
17:26in the centre is Gallagher
17:27Dury goes to join him now
17:29Burley's crossed
17:30Dury's got her way at the far post
17:32and it's just not got enough height
17:34on the header
17:42that's our Andre Flo
17:43again beaten by Hendry
17:47I must say Norway look the more tired
17:49of the two teams
17:52absolutely right John
17:53I think the Scottish fitness
17:54has been very important
17:55to them today
17:56they came up for breath
17:58spurred by that goal
18:01here's John Collins who's kept Scotland
18:03ticking away in midfield
18:04but that's the end of the match
18:07a point the very least that Scotland deserve
18:11over the whole game
18:13caught with a sucker punch
18:15just after half time
18:16they had a bad 20 minutes
18:17but my goodness how they came back
18:19a storming performance by Craig Burley
18:21when he was switched
18:22which brought the equaliser
18:24and if either team looked like
18:25going on to win it
18:26that team was Scotland
18:28they now have their first point
18:30at this World Cup
18:32and must look now
18:33to beat Morocco
18:34which would give them
18:36four points
18:36Norway are on two
18:38and their last fixture
18:40is against Brazil
18:41so however you do
18:42the calculations
18:43Scotland
18:44for the moment
18:45are still very much
18:47in the World Cup
18:47and on that performance
18:49they deserve to be
18:50they deserve to be
