00:00:10i think i found the problem there's a discrepancy in the date of the land grant discrepancy yes
00:00:16captain nathaniel mass received a land grant of 300 acres in november 1721 but
00:00:25captain mass was in england at the time he didn't return to the colonies until 1723 which
00:00:31means he couldn't have helped settle the region until two years after he was given the land given
00:00:37the land exactly because he wasn't even here i don't know how to thank you taylor this is the
00:00:43last piece of the puzzle now i can get back to my book i have to call my publisher well

00:02:57Ray, sorry I'm late.
00:02:58I gotta parlay to help my dad.
00:02:59Man, I still can't believe you grew up on a ranch in Montana.
00:03:03Oh, come on, man. My family in Forest Ridge go way back.
00:03:06My great-great-grandfather cleared the land for that ranch.
00:03:08Yeah, you told me. Him and Daniel Boone.
00:03:10Look, this is so far away from you busting sergeant
00:03:12running your tech company in Silicon Valley.
00:03:14Oh, my phone.
00:03:16Come on, man. You gotta love this place, right?
00:03:19Every time I come here, it's like stepping back in time.
00:03:22Which is why it's costing so much money to bring it into the 21st century.
00:03:26Haven't you taken a good look at that electric panel?
00:03:28Yeah, did you talk to Lyle Lindquist about doing the rewiring?
00:03:31Yeah, about that. Your buddy's been coming a bit too high.
00:03:34Okay, well, I'm not sure I'd call him my buddy,
00:03:36but he said you two have known each other since grade school.
00:03:38Regardless, I hear he's a good electrician.
00:03:40And I'm your business manager.
00:03:42Okay, I really appreciate this passion project of yours,
00:03:45but it's my job to watch the bottom line.
00:03:48I know, Ray. It just makes a lot of sense to hire as many locals as possible, you know?
00:03:53None of it's going to put us over budget.
00:03:57Okay, all right. You're right. We'll get some more beds.
00:04:00Oh, one last thing before I leave.
00:04:04Apparently not everyone's too thrilled that we'll turn the Graff Hotel into a luxury tourist attraction.
00:04:10I was worried about this.
00:04:14This could be good for the whole town.
00:04:16Why would anyone want to stop it?
00:04:18Well, you can find it when you ask them at the meeting.
00:04:20Wait, what?
00:04:22One of us needs to be there.
00:04:25You're the local boy made good.
00:04:28Sounds good, doesn't it? I'll call you.
00:04:38Hey, Dad.
00:04:40Hey, there.
00:04:42I was just going to make some lunch. You want to join me?
00:04:45Yeah, sure. Let me give you a hand with that.
00:04:49I'm heading into Helena for some meetings.
00:04:52I'll be back tomorrow.
00:04:55Supposed to be a storm front moving in. A couple inches of snow.
00:05:01Dad, it's October. The leaves just started changing. It's not going to snow.
00:05:05That wouldn't be the first time we were in for a surprise.
00:05:08There's a frost warning. You better watch the roads. Could get icy out there.
00:05:12I'll be fine.
00:05:14All that time living in California.
00:05:17You could be out of practice driving in it.
00:05:19I'll be okay. All right? I promise.
00:05:22Hey, let me ask you something.
00:05:24Do you know anything about this town meeting tomorrow night?
00:05:29Yeah, what about the hotel?
00:05:31Yeah, why didn't you tell me?
00:05:33I figured you knew about it. I mean, you grew up here, Joel.
00:05:37You know, when people got something on their mind, they're not shy about speaking up.
00:05:41Yeah, that I do.
00:05:44So, what is it exactly on their mind?
00:05:48They barely see you around here anymore.
00:05:50Then one day you show up, say you're gonna turn one of the oldest establishments in town into some sort
00:05:56of fancy resort.
00:05:58It's not a resort.
00:06:01It's a...
00:06:03It's a destination.
00:06:05See? Right there.
00:06:07Destination.
00:06:08What does that even mean?
00:06:10Well, so what are you saying? I got a bit of a PR problem.
00:06:13I'm saying, you gotta talk straight to people if you want to get them on board.
00:06:20Look, why don't you take my truck?
00:06:23That little go-kart of yours isn't gonna be much good if the weather turns.
00:06:28Okay, Dad.
00:06:29You know what? I'll tell you what.
00:06:30I'll leave you the keys, you can take that little golden ride for a spin.
00:06:56I'll leave you the key.
00:07:00Oh, cool.
00:07:02It's okay, it's just... it's just a little ice.
00:07:10Please.
00:07:24Oh, no.
00:07:29Oh, man.
00:07:38This is great.
00:07:44Okay.
00:07:49Really?
00:08:01I'm not even having a hard enough day already.
00:08:04Oh.
00:08:05Ow.
00:08:31Hello?
00:08:34Oh, hi.
00:08:36Thank goodness.
00:08:37You all right?
00:08:38Uh, yeah.
00:08:39Yeah, I think so.
00:08:40I think I must have hit a patch of black ice and I thought I was gonna freeze out here.
00:08:44Yeah.
00:08:44Yeah.
00:08:45Thank you for stopping.
00:08:47You lose something?
00:08:50Oh, there it is.
00:08:51Yes.
00:08:54I don't suppose you have any reception out here.
00:08:58What I can do is I can offer you a ride if you'd like.
00:09:01Uh, but you don't know me, but you don't know me, so here's what I'm gonna do.
00:09:06Uh, I'm gonna wrap my license plate down, as you can see.
00:09:12Uh, my address, you can take this, put it on your dash and, you know, if anyone comes looking for
00:09:21you, they'll know where to find you.
00:09:22Well, that's very thoughtful of you.
00:09:25Easy.
00:09:25Oh.
00:09:26So, uh, you know, before I do commit to this, which way are you headed?
00:09:31Uh, I'm actually heading to a small town called Forest Ridge.
00:09:34I know it well.
00:09:35Come on, I'll get you out of here.
00:09:38It's been quite the day.
00:09:39I see that.
00:09:40Come on.
00:09:47I'm Taylor, by the way.
00:09:51Introductions.
00:09:52Forgot about that part.
00:09:53Uh, Joel.
00:09:55It's nice to meet you.
00:09:56Nice to meet you.
00:09:59So, uh, well, what brings you to Forest Ridge?
00:10:03Uh, my big brother lives here with his family.
00:10:06I've actually never been here before.
00:10:09Well, I might be slightly biased, being that I'm from here, but there's no place quite like it.
00:10:16And I know I've been around a lot, so I think you're gonna enjoy it.
00:10:21Yeah, I hope so.
00:10:43Can I give you a hand with this?
00:10:44Oh, no, I'm fine.
00:10:45I got it.
00:10:45You've been already so helpful.
00:10:47All right.
00:10:49It was an absolute pleasure meeting you, Taylor.
00:10:52Uh, yeah.
00:10:52Yeah, you too.
00:10:53Thank you for, you know, rescuing me.
00:10:57Uh, yeah, no, it's fun.
00:10:58It's fun.
00:10:59You should do it again.
00:11:00Real soon.
00:11:01Yeah, so fun.
00:11:02Or not.
00:11:03Okay, thank you.
00:11:07Hope to see you around.
00:11:08Mom.
00:11:09Yeah, it's gonna be great.
00:11:11All right.
00:11:23Hello.
00:11:24Hey, there she is.
00:11:27Craig, hi.
00:11:28It's so nice to see you.
00:11:29So good to see you, too.
00:11:31We were a little worried about the weather.
00:11:32You're glad you made it.
00:11:33Oh, yeah, more or less.
00:11:34Aunt Taylor!
00:11:36Oh, my gosh, Zoe.
00:11:38You've gotten so big.
00:11:41Hi, Christine.
00:11:42Thank you so much for letting me sit.
00:11:44Of course.
00:11:44Your house is so beautiful.
00:11:47I'm so glad we could get you to Forest Ridge.
00:11:49Yeah, it's such a nice change of pace from going to Seattle all the time, right?
00:11:53Yep, I made it.
00:11:54Four years later, here I am.
00:11:56Let me take your jacket.
00:11:57We're just happy that you're here now.
00:11:59I made you a drawing.
00:12:00You did?
00:12:01Why don't you go get it, sweetie?
00:12:03She's been working on it all morning.
00:12:05She's so excited to show you.
00:12:08How was the drive?
00:12:09Uh, it was very exhilarating.
00:12:13My car is actually in a ditch right now, but a kind stranger gave me a lift and dropped me
00:12:18off.
00:12:18Why didn't you give me a call?
00:12:19I had no signal.
00:12:20Ah.
00:12:21Were you scared?
00:12:23I was cold, but I'm here now and I couldn't be happier.
00:12:27Here you go.
00:12:28This is for me?
00:12:30Yeah.
00:12:30Wait, is this me?
00:12:32That's very impressive.
00:12:34She's so talented.
00:12:37You're welcome.
00:12:38Um, I'm gonna need you to call a tow truck in the morning.
00:12:40Absolutely.
00:12:41Okay.
00:12:41Yeah, no problem.
00:12:42Well, dinner's almost ready.
00:12:43Why don't you get settled in?
00:12:44Okay.
00:12:45I'll show you your room.
00:12:46Yes, please.
00:12:48Yay!
00:13:14Hi!
00:13:16Hi!
00:13:16Hi. Guess what?
00:13:18What?
00:13:19I have a surprise for you.
00:13:21Really? Thank you.
00:13:23You're welcome.
00:13:27Wait.
00:13:29Where did I put it?
00:13:31Put what?
00:13:34My phone.
00:13:35I must have left it in the car.
00:13:39Which I will get tomorrow.
00:13:41Because right now,
00:13:42we have some reading to do.
00:13:44I like this one.
00:13:47That's a really good choice.
00:13:52All right.
00:13:58I thought you and Danny hit it off.
00:14:00We did. He's great.
00:14:02Except, except...
00:14:04I don't know. Living in Seattle,
00:14:06I just keep meeting these tech bros.
00:14:08They're all the same.
00:14:09They have their own startup, brilliant minds,
00:14:11awkwardly cute.
00:14:13They plan to take over the world and become millionaires
00:14:15by the time they're 30.
00:14:16That doesn't sound so bad.
00:14:18Yeah, except for the fact that the only books they read
00:14:20are on tiny little screens.
00:14:24But maybe they're right.
00:14:27Right about what?
00:14:29That as much as I love what I do,
00:14:32libraries are obsolete.
00:14:33Not as long as you have anything to say about it, right?
00:14:38Hey, did I ever tell you
00:14:39that my little sister back in high school
00:14:41wouldn't date a guy
00:14:42unless
00:14:43he could name all three brawny sisters?
00:14:45No, that's not true.
00:14:47No.
00:14:48Two out of three was okay.
00:14:50That's better.
00:14:50Oh, yeah.
00:14:50That's a lot better.
00:14:51Gotta run.
00:14:52Give me a kiss.
00:14:54I'll call the tow truck when I get to work, okay?
00:14:56Okay.
00:14:57And listen,
00:14:57why don't you come by the graph later?
00:14:59Yeah, for sure.
00:14:59All right.
00:15:00Okay.
00:15:01I love you.
00:15:02Love you, too.
00:15:02Have a good day.
00:15:04Hey,
00:15:06somewhere out there,
00:15:07there's a guy who's gonna appreciate your love of bucks.
00:15:12Zoe!
00:15:13Come on.
00:15:13Gotta scoot.
00:15:15How are we doing?
00:15:16Pretty good.
00:15:17Good stuff.
00:15:18Um,
00:15:18the folks in 401 called down.
00:15:20They got a leaky faucet.
00:15:22Oh, okay.
00:15:22I'll go check it out.
00:15:23Yeah.
00:15:24And
00:15:26Joel Sheenan and that other fellow are in the office.
00:15:29Sounds like they're going over some more bids.
00:15:31Perfect.
00:15:32Just in time to turn the graph into Montana's newest all-inclusive entertainment experience.
00:15:36Yeah, I guess so.
00:15:38Um,
00:15:38so,
00:15:39you're coming to the meeting tonight, right?
00:15:41Yes, of course.
00:15:42Absolutely.
00:15:42But if these guys get their hands on those permits,
00:15:46we don't recognize this place.
00:15:49What room was that?
00:15:50Um,
00:15:51401.
00:15:52401.
00:15:54Okay.
00:16:11Oh man,
00:16:12am I glad to see you.
00:16:13You must be Taylor.
00:16:15Hi.
00:16:16Everything checks out.
00:16:17You might want to start it up,
00:16:18let her warm up a bit.
00:16:19Okay.
00:16:19Yeah,
00:16:20I'll do that.
00:16:20How much do I owe you?
00:16:22All taken care of.
00:16:23Wait,
00:16:24really?
00:16:25Craig did not have to do that.
00:16:27Actually,
00:16:27it was a fellow by the name of Joel Sheenan settled the bill.
00:16:30Wait,
00:16:31what?
00:16:31You're good to go.
00:16:32Have a good day.
00:16:34Uh,
00:16:35yeah,
00:16:35you too.
00:16:37Come on.
00:16:40Okay.
00:16:41Okay.
00:16:42Okay.
00:16:47Okay.
00:17:02You're looking for something.
00:17:08Right.
00:17:09It was in your car.
00:17:10You know,
00:17:10I think there's an outside chance you might have dropped this in the truck.
00:17:15I mean,
00:17:16losing my phone twice in one day,
00:17:17that's not a good thing.
00:17:18Oof.
00:17:19Well,
00:17:20if it makes you feel any better.
00:17:21I once misplaced a really,
00:17:25really big cow.
00:17:26It was a little awkward,
00:17:28but I did find her though.
00:17:30I mean,
00:17:30eventually.
00:17:31So,
00:17:32I mean,
00:17:32these things happen.
00:17:34That's good to know.
00:17:35Hmm.
00:17:37What happened to your truck?
00:17:38Oh,
00:17:39yeah.
00:17:39Uh,
00:17:40well,
00:17:41I,
00:17:42I tend to switch things up from time to time.
00:17:45And,
00:17:45uh,
00:17:47what do you think?
00:17:49I don't know.
00:17:50You seem like more of a truck guy to me.
00:17:52Do I?
00:17:54I mean,
00:17:55you did just tell me a story about a cow.
00:17:58It's a true story.
00:17:59I just don't know if it'll fit in the back of your auto.
00:18:01Oh,
00:18:01it's roomier than it looks.
00:18:04Um,
00:18:04listen,
00:18:05I really appreciate you calling me a tow truck,
00:18:07but I cannot let you pay for it.
00:18:09No,
00:18:09of course not.
00:18:10Absolutely not.
00:18:11I wouldn't dream of it.
00:18:12I mean,
00:18:13come on,
00:18:13we just met.
00:18:13It's a little forward,
00:18:14huh?
00:18:15But what I will do,
00:18:16is I'm going to write my number down right here.
00:18:18I'm going to give it to you.
00:18:20What you do with it,
00:18:20you know,
00:18:21that's on your own accord,
00:18:21but I'm hoping,
00:18:23maybe,
00:18:24just maybe,
00:18:25you'll call me,
00:18:26and maybe we go grab coffee,
00:18:28and then,
00:18:30you can pay me back.
00:18:32What do you say?
00:18:36What's the deal?
00:18:39All right,
00:18:39then.
00:18:45Until then.
00:18:47Until then.
00:19:03Harvest Bob.
00:19:05If we could get that on our file,
00:19:06then that'd be great.
00:19:07Absolutely.
00:19:08We can do that.
00:19:09Hey,
00:19:09look who made it.
00:19:10Taylor,
00:19:11I want you to meet Samantha Wilde.
00:19:12Hi.
00:19:13It's my sister Taylor.
00:19:14So nice to meet you.
00:19:15You too.
00:19:16Sam runs the front desk,
00:19:17and makes sure that everybody stays nice and happy around here.
00:19:20How do you like your little town so far?
00:19:21Oh my gosh,
00:19:22it is so beautiful.
00:19:23Yeah.
00:19:24And I hear that you guys have something big coming up.
00:19:26Yes,
00:19:26the Autumn Harvest Ball next week.
00:19:28That's when we really shine.
00:19:29A ball,
00:19:30that sounds fancy.
00:19:31It used to be.
00:19:32It's way more casual now.
00:19:34It's a lot of fun for the whole town.
00:19:37Oh,
00:19:37excuse me.
00:19:39Hey,
00:19:40so,
00:19:40I called about your car this morning,
00:19:41and they said it was already taken care of?
00:19:43Uh,
00:19:44yeah.
00:19:44Looks like my kind stranger came through again.
00:19:47Does the kind stranger have a name?
00:19:48I know that look.
00:19:49No,
00:19:50you are not setting me up.
00:19:51I don't think so.
00:19:52All right.
00:19:52Have it your way.
00:19:54So,
00:19:55what do you think of the place?
00:19:57It really is so lovely.
00:19:59It's like stepping back in time.
00:20:00Yeah.
00:20:01It's over a hundred years old,
00:20:03and all things considered,
00:20:03it should go for another hundred.
00:20:05Assuming we can stop it from getting completely gutted.
00:20:07What do you mean?
00:20:08There's some developers,
00:20:09and they say they can bring more money into town
00:20:11if they bring in more businesses and tourists and stuff.
00:20:14All we have to do is turn this into a fancy new resort.
00:20:18I mean,
00:20:18I like it the way it is.
00:20:20Which is exactly what I plan on telling the town council
00:20:22tonight at the meeting.
00:20:23Oh,
00:20:24yeah,
00:20:24I saw the flyer at your house.
00:20:25Yeah.
00:20:26Hey,
00:20:26you should come along.
00:20:28I mean,
00:20:28I can use all the help I can get.
00:20:29Okay,
00:20:30yeah,
00:20:30sure.
00:20:30Great.
00:20:31Let me show you around.
00:20:33Awesome.
00:20:34Brought an extra sandwich,
00:20:35if you want it.
00:20:37Yeah.
00:21:03One of my favorites.
00:21:06Mine too.
00:21:07I'm Joyce Kelvin,
00:21:08the librarian here.
00:21:10Oh,
00:21:10Taylor Harris.
00:21:11So nice to meet you.
00:21:12Harris.
00:21:13Ah,
00:21:14you must be Zoe's aunt.
00:21:17How did you know?
00:21:18Zoe always talks about her aunt Taylor being a librarian too.
00:21:22She's been very excited about your visit.
00:21:25Oh,
00:21:25well,
00:21:25not as excited as I was to see her.
00:21:28Why don't I open up a card for you so you can check that out?
00:21:31Oh,
00:21:32I mean,
00:21:32that's so nice,
00:21:33but I've read this probably a dozen times and I don't know how long I'm going to be here.
00:21:38So while you are here,
00:21:40think of it like visiting an old friend.
00:21:44I love that.
00:21:45Okay.
00:21:45Thanks.
00:21:49The point is,
00:21:50why say anything at all?
00:21:52Look,
00:21:52just go to the meeting,
00:21:54smile nice,
00:21:54and let them get out their system.
00:21:58Huh?
00:21:59It's more important than that,
00:22:01you know?
00:22:01I just,
00:22:02I want everyone to know we're on the same team.
00:22:04It's a team shmeet.
00:22:05Listen,
00:22:05when those tourist dollars start rolling in,
00:22:07everyone's going to be your best friend.
00:22:09That's not going to be for two months.
00:22:11In the meantime,
00:22:12I'd like the whole town to be on board.
00:22:14All right.
00:22:15You want to make a speech?
00:22:17All right.
00:22:18Let everyone know how much you're looking forward to going to this Harvest Ball thing.
00:22:22I mean,
00:22:22that's all they want to talk about anyway.
00:22:24But it happens to be a pretty big deal around here.
00:22:27Okay.
00:22:30Better idea.
00:22:31You find a date,
00:22:32you go to the ball.
00:22:35I mean,
00:22:35who's going to stay mad at you when you're tripping the light fantastic?
00:22:37Right,
00:22:37right.
00:22:38Right?
00:22:38I ain't tripping any light fantastic at the ball.
00:22:41Or otherwise.
00:22:43Anyways,
00:22:44I got some stuff for you.
00:22:45You got it?
00:22:45Uh,
00:22:46where are you going?
00:22:47I will see you back at the hotel.
00:22:50I got something.
00:22:51Cool.
00:22:55Taylor.
00:22:57Hey.
00:22:58Hi.
00:22:58What are you doing here?
00:23:00Uh,
00:23:00I had this,
00:23:01uh,
00:23:01business thing.
00:23:02It's,
00:23:03so,
00:23:04uh,
00:23:05how's the town treating you?
00:23:06Find your way around?
00:23:06I am,
00:23:08actually.
00:23:08I just stopped by the library and got myself a card.
00:23:11Oh,
00:23:12oh,
00:23:12that's a good choice.
00:23:13Although,
00:23:14you know,
00:23:14I've always been more of a Charlotte fan.
00:23:17Charlotte?
00:23:18Charlotte.
00:23:19Bronze.
00:23:20Who's that,
00:23:21Emily?
00:23:22You know Jane Eyre.
00:23:24Well,
00:23:25well,
00:23:26we cannot forget their favorite sister.
00:23:29And how could we ever forget Anne?
00:23:31Oh,
00:23:31I love Anne.
00:23:33You're full of a lot of surprises,
00:23:34aren't you?
00:23:35Don't.
00:23:37Uh,
00:23:38is that your business thing?
00:23:39Yeah,
00:23:40I gotta go.
00:23:42Sorry.
00:23:43Uh,
00:23:43I'll call you about that coffee.
00:23:45I'm looking forward to it.
00:23:48Bye.
00:23:50Bye.
00:23:51Bye.
00:23:52Bye.
00:23:53Bye.
00:24:00All right,
00:24:01everyone.
00:24:02Settle down.
00:24:03As you all know,
00:24:05we're here to take public comments on the permit phase of the proposed renovations of the Graff Hotel.
00:24:11Craig Harris has asked to get the ball rolling.
00:24:14Yeah.
00:24:21Thanks,
00:24:21Phyllis.
00:24:21Um,
00:24:22I just want to say that,
00:24:23well,
00:24:25I've been working at the Graff for four years now.
00:24:28I suppose that means I know it as well as anybody.
00:24:34I didn't grow up here like a lot of you did.
00:24:36When my wife Christine introduced me to her hometown,
00:24:40it's safe to say that I was smitten.
00:24:43With my wife,
00:24:44too.
00:24:45Since then,
00:24:46I've fallen in love with Forest Ridge and everything about it,
00:24:48especially the Graff.
00:24:52it's part of our history in this town.
00:24:55And I think that that's something that should be preserved and cherished.
00:24:59And I don't think it should be sacrificed for a quick profit.
00:25:08Thank you,
00:25:09Craig.
00:25:10I'm going to open the floor now.
00:25:12Who's next?
00:25:13Excuse me,
00:25:14I'd like to say something.
00:25:36Good evening,
00:25:37ladies and gentlemen.
00:25:37My name is Joel Sheenan.
00:25:40Well,
00:25:41I'm the reason that we're all here tonight.
00:25:43You see,
00:25:43my company,
00:25:44we bought the Graff Hotel.
00:25:46And with these permits,
00:25:47we intend to make some pretty big changes.
00:25:51My family has a deep,
00:25:52deep roots here in Forest Ridge.
00:25:54So I'm doing this
00:25:56because I love this town.
00:25:58I've seen towns like ours grow and prosper
00:26:04by attracting visitors every year.
00:26:10That's the goal.
00:26:12You see,
00:26:12but what they realized
00:26:13was that as important as their history is,
00:26:17they can't let it hold them back.
00:26:19They need to move into the 21st century.
00:26:21They need to plan ahead for the future.
00:26:25And so do we.
00:26:27The plans that we have for the Graff Hotel,
00:26:30they're going to be good for this town.
00:26:32That's why we need this council
00:26:34to endorse these permits.
00:26:36It's for us.
00:26:37So we can take that next step forward
00:26:40and prepare for the future.
00:26:42Because we don't want our history to hold us back.
00:26:47Again, my name's Jill Sheenan.
00:26:50And I thank you for your time.
00:26:53I actually have a question.
00:26:55Sure.
00:26:56Isn't the Graff Hotel 100 years old?
00:27:00So that means it's eligible for a landmark status.
00:27:03For landmark status,
00:27:04the state of Montana says
00:27:06we have to prove
00:27:07that a significant historical event
00:27:09took place involving the building.
00:27:11That's exactly right.
00:27:12Thank you, Phyllis.
00:27:14And according to our research,
00:27:15there's no evidence of that
00:27:17with the Graff Hotel.
00:27:18Well, who did this research?
00:27:20Well, I hired some extremely reputable experts
00:27:23to look into it.
00:27:24You mean your company hired people
00:27:26to look up the landmark status
00:27:27for a building that you want to develop?
00:27:30Oh.
00:27:31You could put it that way, yeah.
00:27:33Okay, so you're saying
00:27:34that if we find a significant event
00:27:36happened at the Graff,
00:27:37and then the hotel would be preserved?
00:27:39According to the state of Montana, yes.
00:27:41Well, I don't know.
00:27:42Maybe Mr. Sheenan's idea of significant
00:27:44is really just in his own best interest.
00:27:47Oh, okay, okay, okay.
00:27:49Look, that's a little far.
00:27:50Phyllis,
00:27:51maybe we could take some time
00:27:52to explore this
00:27:54before the council makes their final decision.
00:27:58All right.
00:27:59This is what we'll do.
00:28:00We'll take a week to look this over,
00:28:02then we'll reconvene
00:28:03and hear what everyone has to say.
00:28:05Any objections?
00:28:07Good.
00:28:08Meeting adjourned.
00:28:17Disaster.
00:28:20You did it.
00:28:22Just got the ball started.
00:28:23Still got to find some proof.
00:28:24Yeah, but looks like
00:28:26this is really in your wheelhouse.
00:28:27What do you say?
00:28:27You want to give us a hand with this?
00:28:30Yeah, sure.
00:28:33Great.
00:28:39You made quite the impression last night.
00:28:42Everybody's talking about it.
00:28:44I got to admit,
00:28:45I was a little surprised
00:28:46the way you called out Joel Sheenan like that.
00:28:47Yeah, well,
00:28:48he threw me a curveball, too.
00:28:50Do you remember that kind stranger
00:28:51I told you about?
00:28:53Wait, that was Joel?
00:28:54Yes.
00:28:55And I can't tell Craig, obviously,
00:28:57because he's not exactly
00:28:58his favorite person right now.
00:28:59This is true.
00:29:01He seemed so nice, too.
00:29:02And so down to earth.
00:29:04I can't believe I fell for that story
00:29:06that he grew up in Forest Ridge.
00:29:08That wasn't a story.
00:29:10Joel and I went to school together.
00:29:12Wait, you did?
00:29:12Yeah.
00:29:13He did really well, too.
00:29:15Honorable, valedictorian.
00:29:17He never really made a big deal
00:29:18out of it, though,
00:29:19so none of us really knew
00:29:19how well he did
00:29:20until he got a full ride to college.
00:29:23Okay, I don't understand.
00:29:24How did he get the money
00:29:25to buy the hotel?
00:29:26After graduation,
00:29:27we all thought he'd move back
00:29:28to the ranch,
00:29:29work with his dad,
00:29:30but he ended up getting recruited
00:29:32by some tech company
00:29:33in California.
00:29:35Another tech guy?
00:29:36Yeah, so we stayed there
00:29:37until his stock was vested,
00:29:39and that's how we got
00:29:40his startup off the ground.
00:29:41He has his own company?
00:29:43Yeah.
00:29:44Helped develop a couple apps
00:29:45that got a lot of attention.
00:29:48So he seems to be doing
00:29:49quite all right for himself.
00:29:50Okay, so this is what
00:29:51I don't understand.
00:29:53If he doesn't live here,
00:29:54why even buy the hotel?
00:29:56I've been wondering that myself,
00:29:57but I will say,
00:29:59I'm not surprised
00:30:00he stopped to help you
00:30:01the other day.
00:30:02What do you mean?
00:30:02Growing up,
00:30:03Joel was always the first person
00:30:04to lend a helping hand
00:30:05to anybody who needed it,
00:30:07so maybe the hotel
00:30:09is his way of giving back
00:30:11to the town.
00:30:15No, because why make
00:30:16all these changes
00:30:16that nobody wants?
00:30:17Maybe.
00:30:19You should ask him.
00:30:21the next time you see him.
00:30:23I can't.
00:30:23I promised Craig
00:30:24I would help him,
00:30:25and I can't do that
00:30:27and hang out with him
00:30:28at the same time.
00:30:29Besides, I need to focus.
00:30:30I have to...
00:30:31I have to find a job.
00:30:33Yeah, no.
00:30:34We don't want anything
00:30:36to distract you.
00:30:39Hey, Dad.
00:30:41I'm down to town.
00:30:42Should be home for dinner.
00:30:44I heard the meeting
00:30:45last night
00:30:45got mighty interesting.
00:30:49Oh, yeah.
00:30:50News travels fast
00:30:51in Forest Ridge.
00:30:53Social media
00:30:54got nothing on us.
00:30:57What are you gonna do?
00:30:58Not that much I can do
00:30:59until we get those permits.
00:31:01I'm not talking
00:31:01about permits, son.
00:31:03I'm talking about
00:31:03all those people
00:31:04that need to know
00:31:05you're acting in good faith.
00:31:07I told them, Dad.
00:31:08I did what I could.
00:31:09I'm here to help.
00:31:14The way they see it,
00:31:16part of their town,
00:31:18part of their history,
00:31:20it's changing forever.
00:31:21There's no record
00:31:22of anything historically
00:31:23significant happening
00:31:24at the Graff Hotel.
00:31:27Even besides me
00:31:28falling in love
00:31:29with your mother
00:31:29at our first harvest ball.
00:31:31Besides that, of course.
00:31:33See, that's what
00:31:34it's all about, Joel.
00:31:35things people remember.
00:31:38What they wore,
00:31:39the song they danced to first,
00:31:41the way the lights
00:31:42shined a certain way.
00:31:45Me?
00:31:47I always remember
00:31:49the wallpaper.
00:31:50Wallpaper?
00:31:51Yeah.
00:31:53In the hallway,
00:31:54on the way to the ballroom,
00:31:55I remember Addie and I
00:31:56were on our way in.
00:31:59We were just a couple of kids,
00:32:02all dressed up
00:32:03for a grown-up fancy ball.
00:32:06I noticed the blue
00:32:07in the wallpaper
00:32:07matched the color of her eyes.
00:32:11I knew right then and there
00:32:13we were going to be
00:32:14dancing with that ball
00:32:15for the rest of our lives.
00:32:17You never told me
00:32:18this story.
00:32:19I guess it's been
00:32:20on my mind lately.
00:32:21With the ball coming up
00:32:23and how your mother
00:32:24and I never miss one.
00:32:27Till now.
00:32:28I know.
00:32:31I'm sorry, Dad.
00:32:31I miss her, too.
00:32:34You want to talk about
00:32:35historical significance?
00:32:39You take a look
00:32:40at that wallpaper.
00:32:53quick question.
00:32:55Did I come on
00:32:56too strongly
00:32:57about my preference
00:32:58for Charlotte
00:32:59instead of Emily?
00:33:00I...
00:33:01What?
00:33:02No, no, no.
00:33:02I mean, I get it.
00:33:03I get it.
00:33:03I can really
00:33:04dig my heels in
00:33:05when it comes to
00:33:06the Bronte sisters.
00:33:08You were very diplomatic.
00:33:11Okay, then I'm stumped.
00:33:13I am,
00:33:14because up until
00:33:15that point,
00:33:16I didn't think
00:33:17we disagreed about
00:33:18anything.
00:33:20Of course,
00:33:21up until the meeting,
00:33:22that is.
00:33:24Joel, look,
00:33:24when you stopped
00:33:25to help me,
00:33:26I thought you were
00:33:27just this nice
00:33:28small-town guy
00:33:29who probably looks
00:33:31really cool
00:33:31riding a horse.
00:33:33Well, be fair.
00:33:33Be fair.
00:33:34You find the right horse.
00:33:35It's hard to look bad.
00:33:37What I didn't know
00:33:38is that you own
00:33:39your own tech company
00:33:40and you drive
00:33:41a flashy car
00:33:41and you can afford
00:33:43to buy and refurbish
00:33:44old hotels.
00:33:45Okay, technically
00:33:46it's one hotel.
00:33:47That's probably
00:33:48not the point.
00:33:49No, no.
00:33:50The point is,
00:33:51is you weren't
00:33:53what you said you were
00:33:54and you left out
00:33:55some pretty important
00:33:56details.
00:33:57It's just...
00:33:58The thing is,
00:33:59it's like anytime
00:34:00I tell people
00:34:00what I do
00:34:01or about my foundation
00:34:02or I talk about
00:34:04my collection
00:34:04of first editions
00:34:06or art
00:34:07or anything.
00:34:07Wait,
00:34:07you collect books?
00:34:09See?
00:34:10Right there.
00:34:11That's what I'm
00:34:12talking about.
00:34:13You see?
00:34:14People see me
00:34:15in a completely
00:34:16different light
00:34:17and then
00:34:17it's like there's
00:34:18this enormous
00:34:20elephant in the room
00:34:21and I have to work
00:34:22so hard to get
00:34:23around it.
00:34:23Rachel, wait.
00:34:24Stop.
00:34:26There's something
00:34:27I haven't told you yet.
00:34:30There are a lot
00:34:31of people
00:34:32in this town
00:34:33who love
00:34:34that old hotel.
00:34:37You noticed?
00:34:39One of those people
00:34:40happens to be
00:34:41my brother.
00:34:43Craig Harris.
00:34:47Your brother's Craig?
00:34:49Craig.
00:34:52Oh.
00:34:54When I'm visiting.
00:34:56That's why
00:34:57you came to town.
00:34:57Okay.
00:35:00So now that
00:35:01I know who you are
00:35:01and you know
00:35:02who I am,
00:35:03I think
00:35:05I think it's
00:35:05probably best
00:35:06if you just
00:35:07send me
00:35:07the toe-tun,
00:35:07girl.
00:35:09And I'm
00:35:10guessing you
00:35:12want to
00:35:13pass on
00:35:13a cup of coffee.
00:35:16I'm sorry.
00:35:18Yeah, me too.
00:35:22Bye.
00:35:25Bye.
00:35:29And we've redesigned
00:35:30the main floor
00:35:30to accommodate
00:35:31new shops
00:35:32and a restaurant.
00:35:34You can look
00:35:34at the floor plans
00:35:35to see which
00:35:35spaces you prefer
00:35:36and, oh,
00:35:38I'll let Joel
00:35:39tell you about
00:35:39this part.
00:35:44Joel?
00:35:45Hmm?
00:35:47Ah,
00:35:48this way.
00:35:49My favorite part
00:35:52is what they call
00:35:54the Grand Ballroom.
00:35:57Oh,
00:35:58uh,
00:35:58it's the
00:35:59decorating committee
00:36:00for the ball.
00:36:01I told them
00:36:01it's okay to get started,
00:36:02but if you need
00:36:03the room...
00:36:03No, please.
00:36:04You, um,
00:36:05go ahead.
00:36:06All right,
00:36:06I'll tell you what.
00:36:07Um,
00:36:08in the meantime,
00:36:09we can, uh,
00:36:10go back to my office
00:36:11and let them finish up
00:36:12and we'll take a look
00:36:14at the plans.
00:36:15Uh,
00:36:15how's that sound?
00:36:17Uh,
00:36:18would you mind
00:36:19escorting them, Ray?
00:36:19Oh, yeah, sure.
00:36:20Right this way.
00:36:26It's gonna look
00:36:27great, Craig.
00:36:30Colors.
00:36:31Yeah.
00:36:32Lights.
00:36:34Corn, man.
00:36:36It's just...
00:36:37It's corn.
00:36:38I'm gonna go.
00:36:39Okay.
00:36:39To my meeting.
00:36:40I worked with you,
00:36:42but I needed to tell you
00:36:43good job.
00:36:45I want you to forget it.
00:36:46I'm just like...
00:36:47Wow.
00:36:48See you later.
00:36:50Wow.
00:36:52Great.
00:36:52So, I'm sure
00:36:53you'll both agree
00:36:54that this is an opportunity
00:36:55of a lifetime.
00:36:57Again,
00:36:57thanks for coming.
00:36:58I'll call you guys
00:36:59next week.
00:37:03Okay.
00:37:09You okay?
00:37:12Yeah, I'm fine.
00:37:13What's with the sudden
00:37:14fascination with wallpaper?
00:37:17Yeah, I wasn't
00:37:19fascinated.
00:37:20Listen, buddy,
00:37:21you gotta keep
00:37:21your head in the game.
00:37:23Word's getting around.
00:37:24What are you talking about?
00:37:26I'm talking about the fact
00:37:27that the locals
00:37:28aren't crazy
00:37:28about this project.
00:37:29I'm getting a few calls
00:37:31from our potential
00:37:31store tenants.
00:37:32They wanna know
00:37:33if we're still moving forward.
00:37:34Of course we are.
00:37:36Then we better make sure
00:37:36that this doesn't
00:37:37steamroll on us.
00:37:39Maybe, you know,
00:37:39maybe that's not a bad idea
00:37:40about you finding
00:37:41a date with a syndic.
00:37:42Hey, lay on the charm.
00:37:44Do a little schmoozing.
00:37:45Ray, I am not taking
00:37:46a date to the ball
00:37:48to make people like me.
00:37:49All I'm saying is
00:37:50we gotta do something.
00:37:51Hang on.
00:37:54Think about it.
00:37:56We got a lot riding on this.
00:37:57Hey.
00:37:59Okay.
00:38:05Are you enjoying
00:38:06your visit
00:38:06with Catherine and Heathcliff?
00:38:08Very much.
00:38:09I was thinking,
00:38:10my part-time librarian
00:38:12recently moved to Denver
00:38:13and I've been looking
00:38:14for someone to help out
00:38:15around here
00:38:16if you're interested.
00:38:18Oh, yeah.
00:38:18I mean, that would be amazing.
00:38:20I just, uh,
00:38:21I don't know how long
00:38:22I'm here for.
00:38:23Well, while you are here,
00:38:25I could sure use your help.
00:38:26That's, yeah, I, yes.
00:38:28I would love to.
00:38:30Wonderful.
00:38:31Come by tomorrow
00:38:31and we'll get you started.
00:38:32All right.
00:38:33Okay.
00:38:33Thanks.
00:38:38I was wondering
00:38:39if you could help me
00:38:40find a book.
00:38:42Well, you see,
00:38:43I finished this one.
00:38:45Again.
00:38:46Jane Eyre.
00:38:47It's impressive.
00:38:48And I'm looking
00:38:49for something
00:38:49a little different.
00:38:50I figured,
00:38:51who better to ask
00:38:52than a librarian?
00:38:55Well, I don't
00:38:56officially work here yet.
00:38:58Well, then we'll
00:38:59make it unofficial.
00:39:02I'm looking for
00:39:03something a little bit
00:39:05less romantic
00:39:07and more down to earth.
00:39:09You know,
00:39:09with people
00:39:10who don't necessarily
00:39:11belong together,
00:39:11but they are willing
00:39:12to take a chance
00:39:14even if the odds
00:39:14are stacked against them.
00:39:17Well, it might not
00:39:18be a happy ending.
00:39:20There's only one way
00:39:21to find out.
00:39:24Let me give you
00:39:25a tour of the hotel
00:39:26tonight.
00:39:27Why would you
00:39:27want to do that?
00:39:28Because, Taylor,
00:39:29I respect the fact
00:39:30that you're standing
00:39:30by your brother.
00:39:32I do.
00:39:33But I also think
00:39:34that if you get
00:39:35to know me better,
00:39:36that you can decide
00:39:37for yourself,
00:39:37the person that I really am.
00:39:43So, a tour?
00:39:46Just a tour.
00:39:47Not a date.
00:39:48Come on.
00:39:51You're ridiculous.
00:39:53Um, yeah.
00:39:56Okay.
00:39:57I'll see you
00:39:58at seven.
00:39:59Tonight.
00:40:00Tonight.
00:40:02Oh.
00:40:03And, uh,
00:40:05Romeo and Juliet.
00:40:08Romeo and Juliet.
00:40:11See, the idea is
00:40:12to remodel
00:40:13and refurbish the place
00:40:14and still keep the feel
00:40:15of the old hotel.
00:40:16If you wanted to feel old,
00:40:17why don't you just
00:40:18keep it the way it is?
00:40:19Nah, people still
00:40:20want the amenities.
00:40:21They just want them
00:40:22wrapped in a more
00:40:23nostalgic package, right?
00:40:25I hear you
00:40:26on the nostalgia.
00:40:28Wow.
00:40:28This looks like
00:40:29it's been here
00:40:29a long time.
00:40:30My dad still remembers
00:40:31it from the first time
00:40:32he brought my mom
00:40:32to the bowl.
00:40:34They used to go?
00:40:36They did.
00:40:38Every year.
00:40:40She passed away
00:40:41last year.
00:40:44I'm sorry.
00:40:48the first time
00:40:49he came here
00:40:50he saw that wallpaper.
00:40:54The way the color
00:40:56matched my mom's eyes.
00:40:58He knew he'd spend
00:40:59the rest of his life
00:40:59with her.
00:41:03It sounds so simple.
00:41:06Having two people
00:41:07just
00:41:08know.
00:41:10I think it is.
00:41:13or if it's the right
00:41:14two people.
00:41:17Come on, May.
00:41:19It's the best part.
00:41:25Oh.
00:41:27What's that?
00:41:29I thought you might
00:41:30get hungry.
00:41:33Is this part of your
00:41:34tour?
00:41:36I can always have him
00:41:37take it back.
00:41:38It's fine.
00:41:40But
00:41:40it's still not a date.
00:41:44Didn't say it was.
00:41:49You're Jackie,
00:41:50you're lady.
00:41:58After you.
00:42:01Chivalry's not dead.
00:42:03It's just been on
00:42:04vacation.
00:42:05Until you met me.
00:42:11Craig and I
00:42:12grew up in Seattle.
00:42:14He's actually the reason
00:42:15I got my first
00:42:16librarian job.
00:42:17Really?
00:42:19We were in high
00:42:20school and this
00:42:22one summer our
00:42:23local library was
00:42:23looking for a
00:42:24volunteer and I
00:42:26wanted the job more
00:42:27than anything.
00:42:29So Craig took
00:42:31the bus all the way
00:42:32downtown so that he
00:42:33could go talk to the
00:42:34head librarian and
00:42:35he told them that no
00:42:36one loves books as
00:42:38much as I do and
00:42:40that he would never
00:42:41have even opened a
00:42:42book if it weren't
00:42:43for me.
00:42:45He must have been
00:42:46really convincing
00:42:46because I got the
00:42:48job and he's been
00:42:51there for me ever
00:42:52since.
00:42:53He sounds like a
00:42:54great brother.
00:42:55Yes.
00:42:56And very determined
00:42:58once he makes his
00:42:59mind up about
00:43:00something.
00:43:01This much I know.
00:43:05Craig thinks you're
00:43:06doing this whole thing
00:43:07for the town as a
00:43:09business deal.
00:43:11And what do you
00:43:12think?
00:43:15I believe you want
00:43:16to help the town
00:43:18and that your
00:43:19intentions are good
00:43:21but.
00:43:23But?
00:43:24Why the craft?
00:43:26Why all the extra
00:43:27time and money?
00:43:30Isn't there something
00:43:31else you can do to
00:43:32help the town?
00:43:36Growing up, my dad
00:43:38and I, we used to
00:43:39work the ranch all the
00:43:40time.
00:43:41Sometimes we would
00:43:44camp out overnight.
00:43:46Just the two of us
00:43:47under the stars.
00:43:49We'd talk all night.
00:43:51It was so special.
00:43:52I used to wish I had a
00:43:55magic wand and I could
00:43:57wait and just make
00:43:59those moments last a
00:44:02little bit longer.
00:44:03You know?
00:44:05It's wonderful.
00:44:06That's how I feel about
00:44:08this town.
00:44:10And all the people.
00:44:12That if I could just
00:44:14wave a magic wand and
00:44:17make force bridge the
00:44:18way it was when I was
00:44:19growing up.
00:44:21I...
00:44:23It turns out I'm not a
00:44:24wizard.
00:44:25I don't have a wand.
00:44:29Things are always
00:44:30changing, Joel.
00:44:31You're right.
00:44:33And all we can do is
00:44:35make sure and try to
00:44:37change them for the
00:44:38better.
00:44:39That's all I want to
00:44:40do.
00:44:41I want to help my
00:44:42hometown grow and keep
00:44:44all the things that make
00:44:46it so special.
00:44:50Like Harvest Ball?
00:44:57What are you doing?
00:45:00May I?
00:45:02No.
00:45:03No, I'm not.
00:45:04I'm not much of a
00:45:05dancer.
00:45:07Follow my lead.
00:45:12I can't believe I'm
00:45:13doing this.
00:45:16It's all in the
00:45:17Hibsberry.
00:45:18What?
00:45:19What?
00:45:19What?
00:45:24What are you
00:45:25talking about?
00:45:26It's you.
00:45:27You're a great dancer.
00:45:29You're a great
00:45:30partner.
00:45:32I'm not going to
00:45:33argue with that.
00:45:34It's true.
00:45:40Listen, Taylor.
00:45:42I was wondering.
00:45:49You and me.
00:45:53Oh, my gosh.
00:45:57Why do I suddenly feel
00:45:58like I'm back in high
00:45:59school?
00:46:00Well, from what I hear,
00:46:02you were actually really
00:46:02cool in high school.
00:46:05Yeah, that's debatable.
00:46:07I don't know.
00:46:08I don't know.
00:46:09Okay.
00:46:12Would you like to go to
00:46:13the ball with me?
00:46:17Wait, seriously?
00:46:19Seriously.
00:46:25Whoa.
00:46:28Wait, Craig.
00:46:29No, I just, I saw the
00:46:31lay.
00:46:31I thought somebody forgot
00:46:32to show you.
00:46:32Craig.
00:46:32Sorry.
00:46:33Sorry.
00:46:39You okay?
00:46:40No, no, no.
00:47:04hey hey listen Craig about tonight you don't have to explain I want to when my
00:47:15car broke down in the dish Joel was the guy that ended up stopping and helping
00:47:18me yeah I kind of put that together and he was so nice and we hit it off but I
00:47:23had no idea how you really felt about him until the meeting I know I probably
00:47:28should have told you about tonight but I thought maybe if I went and talked to
00:47:31him I could change his mind
00:47:35Taylor I'm not upset that you danced with Joel but wait you left I can take that
00:47:40place apart and put it back together again if Joel runs through this place
00:47:44with his plans they won't need me anymore you mean you won't have a job I didn't
00:47:51say it but it just makes sense once that hotel is all new and shiny why keep me
00:47:57around Craig I really don't think he's like that he's a businessman sooner or
00:48:02later they all do the math well you hurt the council all we have to do is find a
00:48:07historically significant thing you really think that's possible it's what I do
00:48:12besides I know how much it means to you and I promise you I will not stop until I
00:48:16find something did he ask you the ball I haven't given him my answer yet you
00:48:26should go it's a lot of fun you never know this might be the last
00:48:37you know I know why you're here and I completely understand Craig is your brother
00:48:43you want to help him you're right I do want to help him but I also want to go to
00:48:48the
00:48:49harvest ball with you oh wait wait uh you do I do as long as you're okay with me doing
00:48:59everything humanly possible to save the graph hotel okay I have to admit this is without a
00:49:08doubt the most unusual offer I've ever had so what do you say is it a date oh what do
00:49:19I say
00:49:19uh as long as you understand I'm not gonna go easy just cuz it's you I would expect no less
00:49:33well then it's a date a darn good one I look very much forward to it the best way of
00:49:43digging up the
00:49:44hotel's history was from some local sources perhaps a first person's account much better
00:49:49than searching the internet yes and considering you know the area so well I was hoping you could
00:49:55point me in the right I may have one idea great over the years the libraries collected a kind of
00:50:06archive of the town's history newspapers photographs letters and diaries what are you doing with all
00:50:15these well the plan was to have it digitized and online but as you can see we haven't made much
00:50:20progress
00:50:20so if you think you can help it looks like a great place to start oh wonderful okay all right
00:50:43wow see I thought I was the only one who came here early yeah well I had some time before
00:50:48the
00:50:48library open so I figured I would help out with the decorations very nice do you want help oh no
00:50:56no no no
00:50:57that is a way beyond my skill set come on it's easy okay okay you're gonna take one of these
00:51:12and you
00:51:13you are going to bend the floral wire into a J and then you're gonna place it right beneath there
00:51:18the letter J yeah or like a little loop single-handedly ruin the entire ball okay no let's um glue
00:51:32let's try this one
00:51:35here let me do this together uh so we're gonna take the wire kind of bend it like this and
00:51:43then we're going to leave it through
00:51:47hey pay attention would you like to come to the ranch tonight and have dinner with my dad and me
00:51:55dinner yeah come on he's a good cook I'd love to show you around the ranch you're not too busy

00:53:39of my

00:53:55I
00:53:55left Forest Ridge I just had this feeling the things I wanted in life they weren't here make sense I
00:54:07didn't
00:54:07even know what that was but I knew that it was out there somewhere if I wanted to find it
00:54:15then I had

00:58:33oh
00:58:39oh
00:58:41Is there anything interesting?
00:59:00Maybe.
00:59:03The letters are addressed to Catherine Donnelly, care of the hotel.
00:59:07This must be her.
00:59:09She emigrated from Dublin and made her way cross-country to Montana.
00:59:13She worked at the Graff?
00:59:14Sounds like she was a maid soon after it opened.
00:59:17What happened to her?
00:59:18I don't know. She must have moved on.
00:59:20But she left these behind.
00:59:23Maybe we can...
00:59:25Actually, Joyce, do you have a magnifying glass?
00:59:27Um, yeah. Sure.
00:59:30Great.
00:59:32Here you go.
00:59:33Okay. So you see that woman on the right?
00:59:36I think that's Mary Catherine.
00:59:37But check this out.
00:59:39The guy in the middle, right in front.
00:59:41Who does that look like?
00:59:48Whoa.
00:59:49Right?
00:59:55Is that...
00:59:56It sure looks like him.
00:59:58Oh, my gosh.
00:59:59President Theodore Roosevelt.
01:00:01Oh, my God.
01:00:03I don't want it.
01:00:05Come on, girl.
01:00:11Theodore Roosevelt was president from 1901 to 1909.
01:00:15During that time, he traveled all across the country while he was in office.
01:00:19I just can't find anything that says he's been in Forrest Ridge.
01:00:22Well, maybe he was just passing through.
01:00:26But suppose he was here on the fish of the business?
01:00:30I think that would be a piece of history worth saving.
01:00:33Along with the hotel where it happened.
01:00:37How do we find out?
01:00:39Well, now that we know the time frame, we can just narrow down the dates.
01:00:42Okay.
01:00:43Back to square one.
01:00:44I think it's our best shot.
01:00:46Well, let's get started.
01:00:50Hey, Alan.
01:00:51Yeah, what's going on?
01:00:54All right.
01:00:55Yeah, no, keep me posted.
01:00:59Okay.
01:00:59All right, thanks.
01:01:02Uh, so?
01:01:03We've been caught in time, but we'll definitely act.
01:01:06Let me call him.
01:01:07I'll get on top of it.
01:01:08Hopefully it's nothing too serious.
01:01:10All right.
01:01:10I'll catch you inside.
01:01:12All right, cool.
01:01:29Hey there.
01:01:30All right.
01:01:31Listen, I'm sorry I didn't call earlier.
01:01:34I just, well, I've been putting out fires everywhere today.
01:01:39It's okay.
01:01:39Things are hopping over here, too.
01:01:42How's our hungry cat doing?
01:01:43Much better.
01:01:44Thank you for asking.
01:01:45You know, in fact, she wanted me to, well, invite you over so she could personally thank
01:01:50you for your help.
01:01:51Oh, she did, did she?
01:01:54Listen, listen.
01:01:55I know that this is, well, incredibly last-second notice, but, um, what do you think if we reschedule
01:02:03the dinner for tonight?
01:02:04I promise you, no cattle wrangling this time.
01:02:08Sounds good.
01:02:09I'll see you tonight.
01:02:11I'll see you tonight.
01:02:11Bye.
01:02:11Bye.
01:02:13Bye.
01:02:13Bye.
01:02:13Bye.
01:02:14Bye.
01:02:16That was so amazing.
01:02:18Learned to cook on a campfire.
01:02:20It's an old Sheen and family tradition.
01:02:24A tradition that's been passed down to the next generation?
01:02:27It's hard to tell.
01:02:28It's not much on the great outdoors these days.
01:02:32Yeah, that ought to tell you something.
01:02:34So, Joel tells me that you're going to the Harvest Ball together.
01:02:39I'm really looking forward to it.
01:02:41I don't know if he told you, but that ball is another Sheen and family tradition.
01:02:46Never missed a one.
01:02:47Joel, too, when he was growing up, should have seen the little tight suit and tie.
01:02:53Man, I think I got pictures around here somewhere.
01:02:57No.
01:02:57Oh, you know, she doesn't want to see any photos.
01:02:59No, I sure do.
01:03:01Maybe later.
01:03:03Little fella was so shy, he couldn't get up the courage to ask a girl a dance, so he would
01:03:08ask his mom.
01:03:09Oh, God.
01:03:10Which is how he learned to move around the floor so well.
01:03:12That's so sweet.
01:03:14Of course, he hasn't been back to the ball since, uh, when?
01:03:18Since you went off to college?
01:03:19Uh, yeah.
01:03:22I guess he just hasn't met anybody he wanted to take.
01:03:26Till now.
01:03:28It's very subtle.
01:03:29Yeah?
01:03:30It's very subtle.
01:03:33Which one's your mom?
01:03:35Uh, right there in the middle.
01:03:39It's just beautiful.
01:03:40Never more beautiful than at the Harvest Ball.
01:03:45And that hard-working young fella is Timothy Patrick Sheenan, my great-grandfather.
01:03:51That's the only photo we even had of him.
01:03:53Yeah.
01:03:54Where was that taken?
01:03:56Right here.
01:03:58He built that cabin back before Montana was even a state.
01:04:01Cleared the land for the ranch.
01:04:04Got married.
01:04:05My family.
01:04:07And Sheenan family has been here ever since.
01:04:15There's something about this photo.
01:04:18What do you mean?
01:04:20I don't know, but I can't put my finger on it.
01:04:25I don't understand why there's nothing online about him traveling to Forest Ridge.
01:04:29I mean, he was the president.
01:04:30Shouldn't there be some sort of record?
01:04:32Maybe they didn't know he was here.
01:04:35Right.
01:04:36Teddy Roosevelt just happened to slip under the radar and come to Forest Ridge, Montana.
01:04:40Well, if anybody can get to the bottom of this, you can.
01:04:53I knew there was something about this photo.
01:04:55What?
01:04:58There's two feet of snow on the ground.
01:04:59It must have been freezing.
01:05:01And no one's wearing a coat.
01:05:02Not even Roosevelt.
01:05:04Huh.
01:05:05Yeah, you're right.
01:05:06When I saw the snow, I assumed it was winter.
01:05:08But look at the trees.
01:05:10They're covered with leaves.
01:05:12Exactly.
01:05:12So it must have been taken in spring.
01:05:14That happens sometimes.
01:05:15We get a freak snowstorm that time of year.
01:05:17So maybe Roosevelt didn't know that and he wasn't expecting snow.
01:05:22But still, there must have been a reason he was in Montana at that time.
01:05:25So how did we find that?
01:05:26So my girlfriend, Caitlin, she works at the National Archives in D.C.
01:05:29So I emailed her the photo and she said she was going to search the records to see all the
01:05:33traveling that the president did during that time.
01:05:35Can she find out before the town council meets?
01:05:38Fingers crossed.
01:05:38She said she would get back to me as soon as possible.
01:05:40But I think it's looking good.
01:05:43In the meantime, instead of just sitting around and waiting, I figured I would come help decorate.
01:05:47What can I do?
01:05:48Yeah, well, can you help bring in the rest of the centerpieces from the lobby?
01:05:51Of course.
01:05:52Cool.
01:05:56So every year the locals have this big harvest dance thing here at the hotel.
01:06:01It's actually a lot of fun.
01:06:03You want to talk about dedication.
01:06:05Joel here is so determined to win over his old hometown to make sure those permits get approved.
01:06:10He actually went out and found himself a date for the dance.
01:06:15So, hey, don't get me wrong.
01:06:16She seems very nice.
01:06:18But this might be just any old date on his arm.
01:06:21Her brother just so happens to be the leading opposition.
01:06:25So if I know my buddy Joel at all, those permits are in your bag.
01:06:51What a pleasant surprise.
01:06:53I literally just got done saying hello to our girl.
01:06:58I decided to drive all the way out here to tell you in person that I'm not going to the
01:07:03ball with you.
01:07:04You can find someone else to win over your hometown.
01:07:08What are you talking about?
01:07:10I was there.
01:07:11I heard everything.
01:07:13You know, all the things Ray said to the guys about your real reason for asking me?
01:07:18No, no, no.
01:07:20Taylor, you don't understand.
01:07:22You're right.
01:07:22I don't understand.
01:07:23I don't understand how the guy that I'm starting to care about isn't real.
01:07:28You're not who I thought you were.
01:07:31You said you weren't sure that you'd ever find what you were looking for.
01:07:37Looks like you just found it.
01:07:43Taylor!
01:07:51Ray said those things?
01:07:54You didn't speak up?
01:07:56No, Dad.
01:07:57I didn't.
01:07:58I didn't say it.
01:08:00I was in a business meeting.
01:08:02There was a time and a place, and I wasn't at it.
01:08:06Some things mean more than money.
01:08:10I thought you knew that, son.
01:08:31Hey.
01:08:32Hey.
01:08:35Christine told me what happened with Joel today.
01:08:37I'm sorry.
01:08:39Yeah, you were right.
01:08:41It's just another business deal.
01:08:43I didn't want to be right this time.
01:08:46What?
01:08:49When Joel drove you into town, I knew how you felt about him.
01:08:53And there's a part of me that hoped that whatever it is that you saw in him would be who
01:08:58he was.
01:09:00Yeah.
01:09:01Me too.
01:09:03Well, look.
01:09:04The council meeting's tonight.
01:09:05In one way or another, this is all going to get settled.
01:09:08And when it does, I want you to promise me something.
01:09:14Well, that depends what the promise is.
01:09:17Okay.
01:09:17I want you to promise me that you are going to come to the ball with Christine and I.
01:09:23Craig.
01:09:23Just come see what the fuss is about.
01:09:26Come to the ball and see how much this town means to all of us.
01:09:35Okay, fine.
01:09:35I'll go.
01:09:37Okay, fine.
01:09:38We'll have you.
01:09:40See you in a bit.
01:09:41See you in a bit.
01:09:47See you in a bit.
01:09:54All right.
01:09:55Oh, yeah.
01:10:11Oh, my gosh.
01:10:12It's my friend Caitlin at the archives.
01:10:14I have to get to the library.
01:10:16The meeting's about to start.
01:10:17Yeah, yeah, I know.
01:10:18Um, don't worry.
01:10:19I'll be right back.
01:10:21What do you mean?
01:10:21I'll be right back.
01:10:22Don't worry.
01:10:41Thank you, Caitlin.
01:10:46Thank you, Teddy Roosevelt.
01:11:13All right, folks.
01:11:14Let's get started.
01:11:15As you all know, we're here to take public comment on whether the Graf Hotel should be or even can
01:11:21be designated an historic landmark.
01:11:40Craig?
01:11:41Craig?
01:11:42Craig, are you ready?
01:11:43Craig?
01:11:44Hi.
01:11:45Yes.
01:11:46Yeah, I'm ready.
01:11:47Yes.
01:11:55So, is everything all right?
01:11:57Yeah, I just, I just have to, it's a little, I got it, I got it.
01:12:06Come on, come on.
01:12:10In addition to all of the social events that we, uh, that we hold at the, the, the Graf, like,
01:12:18um, the Harvest Ball, which, yeah, right?
01:12:23I know we're all looking forward to the Harvest Ball.
01:12:26Absolutely.
01:12:27Yes, absolutely.
01:12:28As I'm sure you are.
01:12:29Indeed.
01:12:30Yes, so, I think it's also, uh, relevant and, uh, very important to pay close attention to the, um, civic
01:12:40benefits that...
01:12:42Do you have a, a point?
01:12:43I do.
01:12:44I'm getting, I'm getting, I'm sorry.
01:12:46Okay.
01:12:53The Graf is old.
01:12:57It, it's, it's, it's the, the right kind of old.
01:13:00It's a good old.
01:13:01We have a furnace down there that your grandfather couldn't repair.
01:13:05Can you please, we've been over this.
01:13:06Being old doesn't qualify a building for landmark status.
01:13:10I'm afraid, unless you have something new to add, you're going to have to yield the floor.
01:13:17I am making a point.
01:13:18I'm, I'm, I'm making, I have several points, and I'm just, I, I'm...
01:13:21I may be able to help with that.
01:13:24Crap.
01:13:27Sorry, I'm late, everybody.
01:13:33Okay.
01:13:37I think I may have found proof that shows that the Graf Hotel deserves to be a historic landmark.
01:13:44Uh, do you mind if I...
01:13:46Oh, please, yes.
01:13:47It's all mine.
01:13:54Mary Catherine Donnelly worked as a maid at the Graf Hotel from 1900 to 1903.
01:14:00We don't know much about her, except for a few letters that she left behind after she
01:14:06moved on.
01:14:08Fortunately, she also left behind some photographs.
01:14:12One in particular was very interesting.
01:14:17In April 1903, Mary Catherine had her photograph taken next to President Theodore Roosevelt's
01:14:25in front of the Graf Hotel.
01:14:27Teddy Roosevelt was in Forest Ridge?
01:14:30Mm-hmm.
01:14:32That spring, he was at Yellowstone National Park to lay the cornerstone of the Roosevelt
01:14:37Arches, which still stand at the north entrance today.
01:14:40Teddy loved this part of the west more than anything, so he decided to stay and do a little
01:14:45bit more exploring.
01:14:48What nobody was expecting was that it was going to be the coldest spring on record.
01:14:55A freak snowstorm rolled in, leaving three feet of snow, and Teddy and his entire crew
01:15:01stranded just outside Forest Ridge.
01:15:04By the time that the party made it back into town, they spent three nights at the Graf Hotel
01:15:10until the roads were clear.
01:15:11And you have proof of all this?
01:15:13I do, actually.
01:15:18Right here, I have a diary entry from Roosevelt.
01:15:23He kept one most of his life.
01:15:25And in April 1903, he wrote, snowed in at a little scrappy town called Forest Ridge.
01:15:33Stayed at the Graf Hotel, best three nights of sleep in years.
01:15:38But it wasn't just the Graf that inspired him.
01:15:44It was Forest Ridge.
01:15:47It was Montana.
01:15:48It was this entire part of the country and its people and the culture that inspired him
01:15:56while he was snowed in.
01:15:57So shortly after he went back to Washington, he decided to sign the Antiquities Act, which
01:16:05gave him and all of the future presidents the power to preserve the beautiful country of
01:16:11ours, so that future generations could enjoy everything that he had.
01:16:17By making the Graf Hotel a historic landmark, we are not only celebrating Roosevelt's legacy,
01:16:25we are celebrating the spirit that makes this city, this country, so special.
01:16:44Thank you, Taylor.
01:16:46That was, well, if we didn't love our town before, we certainly do now.
01:16:52Now I believe Joel Sheenan would like a chance to have his say.
01:17:11I love this town.
01:17:14I do.
01:17:16It's my home.
01:17:20You know, my family's been a big part of Forest Ridge for five generations.
01:17:25Five generations.
01:17:28It's crazy.
01:17:32If they were here, and I think my great-great-grandparents, Timothy and Mary Catherine Sheenan,
01:17:44they'd be proud to support whatever decision this council makes.
01:18:00The request for building permits has been tabled pending our official submission to the
01:18:07state of Montana for the Graf Hotel to be granted landmark status.
01:18:28We're up early.
01:18:32I think it's about time to head back.
01:18:35I've still got a business to run.
01:18:38Besides, it's going to take a while to rework the plans for the Graf.
01:18:43You think the state will go along with the town?
01:18:45Make the hotel an official landmark?
01:18:50It's pretty hard to argue with Tay Roosevelt.
01:18:56What Taylor found?
01:18:59About Mary Catherine, your great-great-grandmother.
01:19:03Kind of part of our history, too.
01:19:06Hmm.
01:19:09Harvest Balls tonight.
01:19:10You don't think he could hold off leaving for one more day?
01:19:13Not that.
01:19:14I can't.
01:19:14I just...
01:19:16You know, I'm about the last person that anybody wants to see at the ball.
01:19:25Especially Taylor.
01:19:32The truth is, I made up my mind to go.
01:19:40It's a remembrance to your mother.
01:19:43But it would be my first one without her.
01:19:47Kind of hoping you'd be there.
01:19:50Don't get me through it.
01:19:57Okay.
01:20:00We'll stay, Dad.
01:20:02But I won't drink this.
01:20:04You can't make me do it.
01:20:07It's like dirt.
01:20:14Wow.
01:20:15Look at you.
01:20:16Thanks.
01:20:18Sitter's here.
01:20:19Okay, great.
01:20:19I am almost ready.
01:20:21Oh, hey, guess what?
01:20:23The library in Seattle called, and they want me back.
01:20:27Get out.
01:20:28That's great.
01:20:29I know, right?
01:20:30They want me to start next week.
01:20:32Wow.
01:20:33That fast, huh?
01:20:34I just...
01:20:34After everything you did for the town, I thought you'd want to hang around.
01:20:37Yeah.
01:20:38I mean, you were so right about Forest Ridge.
01:20:40This place is really special.
01:20:42And I love it, but I, uh, I can't.
01:20:46I gotta get back.
01:20:47Fair enough.
01:20:47Let's make this harvest ball one we'll never forget.
01:20:51Yeah.
01:20:52Perfect.
01:20:53There you go.
01:20:56It concludes the lock.
01:20:58I agree.
01:21:05Cast your visions and bring them back to shore.
01:21:11That works.
01:21:13Come on, make a move.
01:21:16There's another world outside your door.
01:21:22So, hang on with me, you're going to be your guy.
01:21:30You can't take good comfort in all that you own inside.
01:21:38You live straight down, you're out and say,
01:21:44Don't forget where the dream came from.
01:21:48My little body, we know we're losing.
01:21:53Nothing to you is the choice you choose.
01:22:11I owe you an apology.
01:22:15Hey.
01:22:16Joel told me you heard what I said to our investors.
01:22:20I'm sorry.
01:22:22I just got so caught up with the pitch,
01:22:24I didn't realize I was coming between you and Joel.
01:22:26I mean, it wasn't your fault.
01:22:28Joel could have said something.
01:22:29Trust me, he did.
01:22:31The moment those guys were gone,
01:22:32he told me taking you to the ball
01:22:34had nothing to do with business.
01:22:36Really?
01:22:38I mean, I didn't...
01:22:40I had no idea.
01:22:45Well, now that everything's settled,
01:22:46I got to get back, but, uh...
01:22:49I didn't want to leave without telling you.
01:22:51Thanks.
01:22:52Wait, where is Joel?
01:22:54Uh, someone spoke with him,
01:22:55he said he was heading to California?
01:23:06Joel, hey, it's Taylor.
01:23:08Look, I just spoke with Ray,
01:23:10and he told me what you said,
01:23:11and that you really wanted to go to the ball with me.
01:23:14And that, that part of you
01:23:16that I really wanted to believe in was real.
01:23:19Just like you said that you were finding
01:23:21what you were looking for out there somewhere,
01:23:23I...
01:23:26I've been looking, too.
01:23:28And I know that I have found it here with you.
01:23:32Anyways, I'm still at the graph,
01:23:34and I'll wait for you.
01:23:36Just please,
01:23:38please don't leave.
01:23:44You were right.
01:23:47Business or not,
01:23:50I should have spoken.
01:23:53You didn't leave.
01:23:55Gus, look at you.
01:23:59Come here.
01:24:00It's you.
01:24:05I couldn't leave without saying
01:24:07I'm sorry.
01:24:17You're showing me
01:24:18my great-great-grandmother's face
01:24:20for the first time.
01:24:23You know, I, uh,
01:24:24I recognized her name
01:24:26from the marriage certificate.
01:24:28But we never had a
01:24:30photo of her.
01:24:33Until now.
01:24:35Well, if I knew
01:24:36who she was,
01:24:36I obviously would have told you.
01:24:38Seeing them
01:24:39like that
01:24:41just...
01:24:42I guess it made me wonder
01:24:44what it was like for them.
01:24:46They were starting out together.
01:24:48Their whole lives
01:24:50ahead of all.
01:24:52everything
01:24:53brand new.
01:24:56Including
01:24:57this hotel.
01:25:04I guess some things
01:25:05just seem right.
01:25:09Well, maybe it is
01:25:11that simple.
01:25:13Well, two people
01:25:15just
01:25:17suddenly know.
01:25:21It's great, two people.
01:25:25I think so.
01:25:28There you are.
01:25:29Ah,
01:25:30what are you doing out here?
01:25:31It's freezing.
01:25:32Come on.
01:25:34Party's for you, too.
01:25:36Give the poor guy
01:25:36his jacket back.
01:25:37It's freezing.
01:25:38It's your own jacket.
01:25:42Shall we?
01:25:43I'm sorry.
01:25:43All right.
01:25:45All right.
01:25:56All right.
01:25:58All right.
01:26:01All right.
01:26:03All right.
01:26:04All right.
01:26:04All right.
01:26:04All right.
01:26:04All right.
01:26:05All right.
01:26:07All right.
01:26:09All right.
01:26:25Who knew that bad weather could change the lives of so many for the better?
01:26:32Then and now.
01:26:46Oh, Lord, I'll never let you go.
01:26:55My heart is where it always was.
01:27:03Oh, Lord, I was home.
01:27:38Oh, Lord, I'll never let you go.
01:27:41Oh, Lord, I'll never let you go.
01:28:35Oh, Lord, I'll never let you go.
