00:03:10We keep having to ask you questions about how do you deal with disappointment, do you learn things, this and
00:03:15that. I'm wondering if it's kind of getting exhausting to have to answer those kind of things.
00:03:19It is, but at the same time, you know, when I do finally win this next major, it's going to
00:03:25be really, really sweet.
00:03:27So, you know, I would go through a hundred Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship.
00:03:58Hello, friends, welcome to this tradition unlike any other, the masters.
00:04:04It's always an emotional trip around this story.
00:04:07It's always an emotional trip around this story, of course, down in Augusta, Georgia.
00:04:39I'm walking back to Georgia.
00:04:39On what could be one of the greatest afternoons of sports that you will ever witness.
00:04:48Rory McIlroy looking for his first victory here at the Masters.
00:04:54I don't think I'd ever went into a Masters playing as good or feeling as good about my game as
00:05:01I had this year.
00:05:02And that's, you know, going into my 17th Masters, that's an amazing feeling to have knowing that, okay, this is,
00:05:08you know, this could be the year.
00:05:11There was a lot of hype.
00:05:14Never before has he led going into the final round with the Grand Slam in his grasp.
00:05:21There's a lot of history that could be made here today.
00:05:25McIlroy trying to become just the sixth man to complete the Korea Grand Slam.
00:05:30All that weight on his shoulders.
00:05:33I honestly felt like the toughest thing for me going into Sunday was going to be playing with Bryson.
00:05:40The man who we expect to stand in his way is Bryson DeChambeau, who inflicted painful defeat of Rory McIlroy
00:05:48only last year at the U.S. Open.
00:05:55We're very opposite in how we approach the game.
00:05:57And, yeah, there's a little bit of history there.
00:06:01You told me last night you are so ready for this final round.
00:06:05What does being ready look like for you?
00:06:07Just excited.
00:06:08Excited for the opportunity.
00:06:09Going to have a lot of fun today.
00:06:11It's going to be a great battle.
00:06:14So here he goes, the day of destiny, his 17th attempt to win a green jacket.
00:06:21It felt like two boxers walking out for a fight.
00:06:26Look at the gladiatorial arrival of Bryson DeChambeau at the first.
00:06:33Now driving!
00:06:35Rory McIlroy!
00:06:40Physically, he's got it.
00:06:41Technically, he's got it.
00:06:42Where is he mentally?
00:06:44That's always the conundrum of Rory, isn't it?
00:06:48I was 12 under par.
00:06:50And Bryson was 10 under.
00:06:54I tried to just make him invisible.
00:06:57You know, don't watch him hit a shot.
00:06:58Just get lost in what you're doing.
00:07:01So I tried to really just wrap myself in my own little bubble.
00:07:07I really tried to focus on the opportunity that I had.
00:07:13To fulfill a lifelong dream.
00:07:24It's drifting a little to the right.
00:07:29It's gone into the bunker.
00:07:32An early blow.
00:07:33An early blow.
00:07:41When you do get to the top level in golf, the fine margins are in how you can control yourself.
00:07:55If you're really mentally strong, the physical motion of making a golf swing and hitting a golf shot should be
00:08:03easier.
00:08:06Not good for Rory McIlroy struggling to make bogey here at the first.
00:08:16Two drop shots, he taps in for the double bogey.
00:08:21And Rory McIlroy's lead from the start of the day, just a few moments into this final round, has been
00:08:27extinguished.
00:08:29The door is open for DeChambeau now.
00:08:35Price is up to the occasion.
00:08:49He said in the build-up to the Masters this year, Rory McIlroy, that the secret of success was a
00:08:56willingness to be heartbroken.
00:09:00So, if you're on Rory's side, listen to us this evening.
00:09:04I hope you've got friends and family close, right, for support.
00:09:23At his home club in Hollywood County Downe, no one ever doubted him.
00:09:29Every time he wins a big tournament, the local bakery makes special biscuits.
00:09:36I wouldn't say my upbringing was like a normal upbringing, but my parents and golf have been the constant in
00:09:43my life.
00:09:48Honestly, all of my childhood memories are from here at Hollywood Golf Club.
00:09:52You know, my dad worked here for a good bit of my childhood.
00:09:58Our life revolved around this place.
00:10:02My mum or my dad would drop me off at 7.30 or 8 o'clock in the morning and
00:10:06pick me up again at 8pm at night.
00:10:09You know, I'd play 54 holes in a day.
00:10:17Summertime, 10 o'clock at night, running around the golf course looking for him.
00:10:21You know, couldn't find him. Just a determined little boy.
00:10:27I'm an only child. I've always been very comfortable on my own.
00:10:34And in golf, it is you and your thoughts and the golf ball.
00:10:39And I've always loved that.
00:10:44I used to say to Rosie, he's odd.
00:10:48I mean, he's not knocking about wee boys. Is he alright? You know?
00:10:51Rosie says he just, let him go there, you know.
00:10:54He was a happy child.
00:10:57How you feeling, Rory?
00:10:59Good.
00:11:01Gerry and Rosie didn't drive him at it.
00:11:03It was all Rory wanted to play well and they just supported him wholeheartedly.
00:11:10I would coach Rory and I told him a story about an older Irish pro that I played with called
00:11:15Paddy Scarrett.
00:11:17He would practice his swing nearly in the bed or his grip.
00:11:20He'd just keep doing it until he fell asleep.
00:11:23Gerry told me one day, he says,
00:11:24Michael, we found Rory asleep in the bed with his hands on the club and the grip.
00:11:32I was obsessed.
00:11:35I loved going out to play and imagining that I was playing the major championships.
00:11:40And it was always against the greats of the game that I grew up watching.
00:11:45Welcome to this tradition, unlike any other, the Masters.
00:11:50And then I watched Tiger win the Masters in April of 97.
00:11:54There it is. A win for the ages.
00:12:00I was like, I want to do that.
00:12:06I think he was about eight at the time.
00:12:09Gerry took him everywhere, you know, around Ireland, playing in tournaments.
00:12:15People were approaching us saying, oh, we, we run a tournament.
00:12:19Do you want to come to our tournament?
00:12:22And she says, Gerry, this is a God Street.
00:12:24You see, if we don't make an effort, we're never going to know.
00:12:28She says, I'll tell you what we'll do.
00:12:31She says, I'll go on night shift.
00:12:35Right?
00:12:37And you take on extra jobs.
00:12:40So, I worked all night and Gerry worked all day.
00:12:44And that's how we funded it.
00:12:47At just nine years of age, Rory McIlroy from Hollywood is following in the steps of his golfing hero, Tiger
00:12:54Woods.
00:12:54And Rory's ambitions are just as huge.
00:12:57To turn a pro and to win all the majors.
00:13:02After that interview, I said to him, Rory,
00:13:05Jesus, Rory, if you won one, wouldn't it be great?
00:13:08Yeah, yes, I'll win them all.
00:13:10Walked away.
00:13:11I said, all right.
00:13:14McIlroy has already been one of the most successful ever Irish amateurs.
00:13:19I'm an eternal optimist.
00:13:21That can be naive in some ways, but I'd much rather go through life being a dreamer.
00:13:30And when I kept getting that positive feedback from my dad or from my results in tournaments, it kept me
00:13:38going.
00:13:44And so, as I got better, the dream got bigger.
00:13:49I have complete confidence in myself and hopefully I can get a major early and show some of the young
00:13:54guys that it is possible.
00:14:00All eyes this weekend will be focused on an Irish prodigy whom many consider to be the next Tiger Woods.
00:14:06This dazzling 21-year-old Rory McIlroy has a four-shot lead.
00:14:11If he holds up today, it would mark in many minds the dawning of a new age in the sport.
00:14:19That was my first experience leading in a major championship going into the last day.
00:14:27And I felt like this would be my year to break out and win my first major.
00:14:33This young man is playing a game beyond his years.
00:14:36Love the way he's playing, he's locked in, he's making great decisions.
00:14:41A worldwide television audience, including back at his home club in Hollywood, Northern Ireland,
00:14:47are gathering ready to salute McIlroy as the new Masters champion.
00:14:51Four plays, Rory McIlroy.
00:15:05I made a bogey at the first.
00:15:08And I noticed that like a few guys ahead of me got off to really good starts.
00:15:19Now that is exquisite touch. Oh my goodness!
00:15:26All I was thinking about was the fact that I had a four-shot lead.
00:15:30Now it's just a one-shot lead.
00:15:32Maybe a little extra pressure.
00:15:35I remember just looking around at the scoreboards way too much.
00:15:41Oh no!
00:15:44I play my best golf when I'm a little jovial and relaxed and happy-go-lucky, whatever it is.
00:15:50But, you know, I tried to be so laser-focused tunnel vision.
00:15:54I'm here to do a job, I'm here to finish this thing off.
00:15:58I tried to be someone that I'm not.
00:16:03Back on the tenth with McIlroy.
00:16:05Right?
00:16:06Rory better be careful with this one.
00:16:08It's a really key drive.
00:16:10Try and make an easy four.
00:16:18What?
00:16:20He asked if it's out of bounds over there.
00:16:21No, there's a long way to it, OB.
00:16:24That is not a good shot at all.
00:16:26Out of sync.
00:16:30I knew that I'd clipped, like, the very right side of the tree.
00:16:34And then you're like, okay, what do I do from here?
00:16:37You're trying to look for your ball.
00:16:39It's over in these cabins that you didn't even know existed.
00:16:43Have you ever seen anyone anywhere close to this on ten?
00:16:46Never.
00:16:48You know, Mike Tyson says everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth, right?
00:16:52And I got punched in the mouth and I did not know what to do.
00:16:58Wow, that all comes as a shock.
00:17:00That wasn't in his master plan.
00:17:03Everything at that point just starts to move so quickly.
00:17:07Be careful left again.
00:17:09Oh, my goodness.
00:17:10Triple to tenth.
00:17:13And then I four-putted the twelfth.
00:17:15It was just, like, short-circuited panic.
00:17:19I was spiraling.
00:17:20Like, what is going on?
00:17:23And then I felt like 13 to 18 went so slow.
00:17:29You know, it was this death march to the 18th green.
00:17:36Well, Rory McIlroy joins a long and illustrious list of top sportsmen
00:17:40who seem to implode when the eyes of the world are upon them.
00:17:43The Northern Irish golfer suffered a final round collapse
00:17:46in some of the most dramatic scenes ever seen in Augusta.
00:17:50It's an incredibly horrific and humiliating thing to happen.
00:17:54Will this hurt Rory McIlroy in the future?
00:17:57I hope not.
00:17:58But, um, that was sad to watch.
00:18:072011 probably scarred me more than I even realize.
00:18:13You know, I've tried to unpack a lot of it, but I still don't,
00:18:16I probably don't understand how much that that day did.
00:18:20You know, my subconscious movements around this place or this course,
00:18:27like, you know, it's probably, there's probably some of that still in there.
00:18:382025.
00:18:39I obviously didn't get off to the best start.
00:18:42You try to tell the world you're living in your own little world,
00:18:46and it's hard to do.
00:19:02That's a shaky start.
00:19:15That's a shaky start.
00:19:17That's a really, really difficult putt.
00:19:19And more frustration from McIlroy in this ragged start to his round.
00:19:25I'm an emotional player.
00:19:27I ride with the momentum, and then I can get it going the other way,
00:19:30and I can start to spiral a little bit.
00:19:36You're a good one.
00:19:39You're a good one.
00:19:39You're a good one.
00:19:40You're a good one.
00:19:41You're a good one.
00:19:42You're a good one.
00:19:43You're a good one.
00:19:43Golf is the ultimate game where it's on you.
00:19:47There's no one else.
00:19:50But, obviously, you're quite aware of what Bryson's doing beside you.
00:19:55Now can Bryson DeChambeau get this for a birdie, this for a lead?
00:20:01Stiff arms, those hunched shoulders, lightest of touches with the putter,
00:20:05and it's in, and it's taken two holes,
00:20:08but Bryson DeChambeau has wrenched the lead at the Masters
00:20:11from the grip of Rory McIlroy.
00:20:16We think back to 2011.
00:20:20Has he done it again?
00:20:34Everyone in the UK was watching Rory McIlroy completely crumble in the last round of the Masters.
00:20:40It was a horror show for the Northern Irishman.
00:20:45He had the lead after nine holes, and he lost by ten strokes.
00:20:51When you lost the Masters on the back nine,
00:20:55a lot of people worried about what he would do to you.
00:20:58Did you worry?
00:21:00You know, being four ahead going into the final day,
00:21:03and having a great chance to win your first major,
00:21:07you know, and blowing it the way I did,
00:21:09it wasn't a nice feeling.
00:21:13You know, I spoke to my mum and dad the next morning.
00:21:15I rang home, and that's when it sort of hit me.
00:21:18You know, I don't remember when the last time I cried over golf was,
00:21:23but I just felt like I'd let them down in some way.
00:21:29Of course I was crying, he was crying.
00:21:33The way he was carrying himself on the golf course just wasn't him at all.
00:21:38You fail for your kids.
00:21:41You do, you know.
00:21:42I know what he's come through.
00:21:44There was a massive question mark hanging over the head of McElroy.
00:21:47Will he ever win a major?
00:21:49I don't think he'll ever win a major, because that collapse was spectacular.
00:21:52He melted down, and it will be very difficult, I think,
00:21:56for him to rebuild from here.
00:21:58I skip them shoulders back and chin up.
00:22:01Start walking properly.
00:22:07In that seven or eight weeks from Augusta to the US Open,
00:22:13you know, I just had to go back to the drawing board
00:22:16and try and look for ways to improve.
00:22:24I would suspect that Rory would have some real live jitters
00:22:28after his performance in the last major.
00:22:30And they'll be asking him about that for a long time,
00:22:33at least until he wins a major championship.
00:22:35Maybe he can do it this week.
00:22:42He was really confident.
00:22:44He was just freewheeling it, you know.
00:22:48You're going to achieve what you want to when you get into that frame of mind.
00:22:53There has to be no doubt with what you're doing.
00:22:57And I always felt that was his best attribute.
00:23:03My goal for the week was to keep my eye line above the crowd.
00:23:08You know, shoulders back, eyes up.
00:23:11If you can put it out to the world that you're ready for this,
00:23:16your physiology affects your psychology.
00:23:22I like his spirit, even though he had that disastrous round on Sunday at the Masters.
00:23:27He's happy to be here.
00:23:32You know, here he is willing to jump back on that big stage and get in that arena,
00:23:36and I think it's impressive.
00:23:38For it all to really matter, you've got to have the trophy in your hand,
00:23:42and no one knows that more than Rory.
00:23:46I think he was leading going into the last round by four or five.
00:23:50I says, how are you feeling?
00:23:52He says, a wee bit nervy, but I'm okay.
00:23:55I says, Rory, I worked eight years in a row,
00:24:02three jobs, 90 hours a week.
00:24:05Never stopped.
00:24:07You see, the more you put into anything,
00:24:11the more you'll get out of it, son.
00:24:17Rory McIlroy has the look, the swagger of a major champion.
00:24:24The last five holes I could really enjoy.
00:24:29You know, I was like, okay, I've got an eight-shot lead.
00:24:33I remember just, like, trying to find my dad in the crowd.
00:24:38You know, there's so many people there, and I couldn't really find them.
00:24:41But walking down the 18th, he's walking down the left side.
00:24:56Him being there and being able to watch me fulfill a lifelong dream of winning a major championship.
00:25:04Rory McIlroy, the 2011 United States Open champion.
00:25:11After what happened, I mean, you talk about being resilient.
00:25:17I mean, that's what you call them.
00:25:20Happy Valentine's Day. Thank you.
00:25:27I think that made me believe that, you know, I could really do some special things in the game.
00:25:41Bryson DeChambeau has a one-shot lead.
00:25:45Rory McIlroy drops to ten under.
00:25:52Gorgeous control from McIlroy as the ball curves around the back.
00:25:55There's just a little, slim finger of green, and McIlroy's managed to find it.
00:26:02Now, McIlroy can hit straight back here.
00:26:06If this goes in, the 35-year-old will go back into a share of the lead.
00:26:14Borrowing from left to right, sends it on its way, looks good.
00:26:17And in! And in for McIlroy, the first birdie of his final round.
00:26:24And Bryson DeChambeau is going to drop a shot here.
00:26:26Rory McIlroy is going to be back in the lead at the Masters.
00:26:30Oh, you're going to love it, haven't you?
00:26:32You really have got to love Augusta on a Sunday.
00:26:35It is absolute madness.
00:26:37And this is going to be just incredible theatre if it carries on like this.
00:26:45With the honour, it would be good to hit a good shot here.
00:26:48Put the pressure on.
00:26:51And he has.
00:26:55He's got a chance to actually have a bigger lead than he did at the start of the day.
00:26:59That's exactly right.
00:27:01Knock this one in.
00:27:03Go three ahead.
00:27:10And now the Walls.
00:27:11Borrowing here at the fourth.
00:27:15Watch this, Drew.
00:27:16Watch this reaction.
00:27:29I first meet Rory in 2011, so he's won the US Open at the time.
00:27:34He had this unwavering clarity on his long-term goals in golf.
00:27:39At age nine, for him to say, you know, I want to turn professional and win all the majors.
00:27:44It's a pretty bold ambition.
00:27:49I want to be remembered as one of the best players that ever played the game.
00:27:56But to be remembered as one of the best, you need to knock off a few of those major championships.
00:28:04There are four majors, the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the PGA Championship.
00:28:16The mop top makes its way up the 18th.
00:28:21This is for the all-time margin of victory in PGA Championship history.
00:28:34I didn't want the persona of being content with doing what I've done in the game of golf.
00:28:38I wanted to prove that I had the hunger to do more.
00:28:43The hype built incredibly after 2014, when he won the Open at Hoylake.
00:28:49The champion.
00:28:52McIlroy led the British Open wire to wire.
00:28:54McIlroy joins Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to have won three majors by the age of
00:28:5925.
00:29:01So here's a question. Is he the next Tiger Woods?
00:29:04Goff may have a new Tiger Woods.
00:29:08He was positioned as, you know, the next successor in the world of golf.
00:29:13You know, I think that definitely came with a level of expectation, no question.
00:29:31I mean, what a summer. You became the first European player to win three separate majors, which just leaves the
00:29:37Masters.
00:29:37That's the next one. The next target?
00:29:40Yeah, the green jacket. Yeah, that's the one that I'm in for next year.
00:29:43It would complete the career Grand Slam.
00:29:45I think only five golfers in history have got it.
00:29:48So it would be a huge thing to go for at 25 years of age.
00:29:54Trying to join that list of people that have won the Grand Slam.
00:29:58It's like you're trying to put yourself among these absolute legends of the game.
00:30:06Gene Saracen.
00:30:09Ben Hogan.
00:30:12Gary Player.
00:30:15Jack Nicklaus.
00:30:18Tiger Woods.
00:30:19I absolutely idolized him.
00:30:22And that's where, you know, there's all of these little doubts that start to creep in.
00:30:28Am I worthy of this?
00:30:31Is this what I'm supposed to do?
00:30:37It's like imposter syndrome.
00:30:39Like, it's like, you know, no, why have, like, this, me?
00:30:46I'm part of, you know, that's where it sort of gets to.
00:30:49I think that's the scary part.
00:30:52Rory McIlroy for the Masters next year
00:30:54in his first green jacket in the career Grand Slam.
00:30:58And he leaves it short.
00:31:00No.
00:31:01Cannot do that in April.
00:31:04I think the significance of the Masters for him and for, you know,
00:31:08the wider golf story, it became very real after 2014.
00:31:16It's been heartbreak so many times, this is his 11th chance to complete that career Grand Slam.
00:31:24For most of my career, it's never just been about the Masters.
00:31:30And from 2015 to 2025, it was the Masters and...
00:31:37Oh, no. Sit. Ah, sit. Sit, sit.
00:31:40All right!
00:31:41I feel like that Grand Slam conversation just brought a lot of baggage with it.
00:31:47Maybe I didn't put myself all the way out there in this tournament at certain points
00:31:52because, you know, if you get just this close to doing it
00:31:56and then it's taken away for some reason, like, that's hard to handle.
00:32:03As the years have went on, like, I talked to different people about that pressure.
00:32:11I had lunch with Jack.
00:32:13Jack Nicklaus receives a rousing ovation as he walks onto the final green.
00:32:20We talked about all kinds of things with the game and what to do
00:32:24and I talked to him about patience.
00:32:26Just be patient with it. It's going to come.
00:32:28You're too good a player for it not to count.
00:32:34Many people do it different ways.
00:32:38You figure out what your abilities are.
00:32:41You only try to do what you can do, not what somebody else can do.
00:32:44I knew what Jack was getting at because my tendency when I was younger
00:32:48was to play the aggressive swashbuckling golf.
00:32:52There was some drive by Rory McIlroy. My goodness, he's...
00:32:55It's going to be hard to beat a guy like that that hits so bloody far.
00:32:59Second from the pine straw.
00:33:02Oh, that's another good one.
00:33:03Beautiful shot. That sat down like a butterfly with sore feet.
00:33:08But I would say I was too much at either side of the spectrum,
00:33:12so I'd be really swashbuckling and really, really aggressive.
00:33:15But then when it mattered and I was in contention,
00:33:17I would get way too tentative and way too cautious.
00:33:23Oh, he's lost it as well.
00:33:25I don't believe this.
00:33:27You want to play smart, but you also want to recognise when you have your chances.
00:33:35Rory has put some tough holes behind him.
00:33:38We're going to the tough seventh.
00:33:44It is the most difficult fairway to hit this week.
00:33:46Miss this fairway at your peril.
00:33:56Seven was a tee shot all week that I struggled with.
00:34:06Not happy with the tee shot.
00:34:09This is very far left.
00:34:12Hits one of the trees over there.
00:34:19Bryson looking for a spark.
00:34:25Give it some distance for accuracy.
00:34:33When I was walking up to it, I'm just like,
00:34:35please have something.
00:34:36Have some sort of shot, some sort of gap.
00:34:38Like, the one thing Harry and I always say to ourselves is,
00:34:42all I want is a backswing and a gap.
00:34:45Just talking to Harry Diamond, his caddy.
00:34:48Yeah, I mean, I think I can get it pretty much there.
00:34:53Harry was begging me.
00:34:55He's like, just chip it out.
00:34:56We can make four this way.
00:34:57I'm like, no, no, I've got a gap.
00:34:59I can see a gap here.
00:35:00And he's like, what are you talking about?
00:35:01There's nothing there.
00:35:02I'm like, no, no, I can get a nine iron up and I can do this.
00:35:07I like it.
00:35:08I feel like I've got a shot.
00:35:23One little bit of that pine tree.
00:35:27And the ball lands on the green and almost goes into the hole.
00:35:32Wow, what a shot from Rory McIlroy.
00:35:35And he's roaring with laughter.
00:35:37He cannot believe it.
00:35:39That's the kid in McIlroy.
00:35:41That's the young kid playing golf.
00:35:43He cannot believe he's pulled that off.
00:35:47To take those shots on at such a crucial time,
00:35:51nobody else is going to do it, don't they have?
00:35:55Let's find out what Bryson is thinking.
00:36:02It was actually very well played.
00:36:08Yeah, just brilliant.
00:36:15If there was a fault at Rory, I think he has a tendency not to manage his game when he
00:36:22has pressure situations.
00:36:38I don't know you leave the short.
00:36:40He didn't think he could.
00:36:52Bryson's not going to go away today.
00:37:01That final round was made maybe a little bigger
00:37:04because of what happened at Pinehurst the year before.
00:37:08You know, another chance to win a major.
00:37:11Got off to a great start.
00:37:13I just, you know, I just got a little uneasy and a bit tense.
00:37:19Excruciating short misses for McIlroy.
00:37:24I was in the 18th tower calling that final round.
00:37:27Nobody's had more pressure on him over the last 10 years.
00:37:30Everybody in the world knows that Rory hasn't won since 2014, won a major.
00:37:37Bryson at Pinehursts kind of won over the crowd a little bit.
00:37:42What Bryson has is real innate grit.
00:37:46And you don't feel grit from Rory.
00:37:51I know Rory has said it.
00:37:53Afterwards, that's, you know, he probably got out of his rhythm a little bit
00:37:57by thinking a little too much about the situation, which, how do you not?
00:38:09What happens on nine between you and Bryson?
00:38:13So, we both hit good drives in nine, and we both hit really good second shots.
00:38:18Here's Bryson.
00:38:23It's a beauty.
00:38:35Big shot for Rory.
00:38:36Must fly it to the hole to avoid the shoulder off the bunker.
00:38:42And it's judged really, really nicely by McIlroy.
00:38:47He's putting uphill from about the same distance as Bryson DeChambeau, trying to get it to 13 under par.
00:38:55I thought it very clearly was my putt.
00:38:59I thought his ball was slightly closer than mine.
00:39:02We sort of look at each other, and he's like, I'm like, well, I think it's me to go.
00:39:07And he's like, well, I think it's me to go.
00:39:09It's a very gamesmanship-y match play thing.
00:39:13Really, both of us want to putt first.
00:39:15Because if you can hold that putt before your opponent puts pressure on them,
00:39:20he goes, well, why don't we just throw a tee up for it to see who goes first?
00:39:25And I'm like, no, this is the final round of the Masters.
00:39:28This isn't some, like, game on a Tuesday afternoon somewhere.
00:39:33I'm like, no.
00:39:35I wasn't going to wilt in that situation.
00:39:38I was just going to stand firm.
00:39:41So I said, there's a ref, right?
00:39:42Like, why don't we get him up to come and measure?
00:39:44And he said, no, no, it's fine.
00:39:46You can go anyway.
00:39:47I don't care.
00:39:50And I just felt like that was a really big moment.
00:39:54McElroy putting first for Birdie.
00:40:03McElroy.
00:40:10I was proud of myself for holding my grind.
00:40:15Now the demand is on DeChambeau to answer it back.
00:40:18He has to answer right here.
00:40:28And McElroy has told him, who's the boss here?
00:40:34Rory will go to the second side with a four-shot lead.
00:40:41I felt like going into that back nine that Bryson wasn't really a factor in the tournament at that point.
00:40:53On to the second nine.
00:40:56The most exciting nine holes in golf, plus the most pressure-packed.
00:41:07It was Gary Player, the three-time Masters champion, who said,
00:41:10you don't win the Masters with strategy, you win it with nerves.
00:41:13And we're going to see some nerves tested here on that back nine today.
00:41:21It's not going to make it.
00:41:23That could go in the water.
00:41:24Yes, the ripples tell the story.
00:41:29This is where it started to come undone back in 2011.
00:41:37You know, for Rory, having the lead there,
00:41:40I'm sure the memories of 2011,
00:41:44going back to the 10th hole,
00:41:46how's this tee shot going to go?
00:41:53My goodness.
00:41:54He must have hit a tree.
00:41:59We'll remember what happened back in 2011.
00:42:062011 was the big one
00:42:07where I probably had the greatest chance.
00:42:11But for me, in my mind,
00:42:13it wasn't just 2011.
00:42:14It was all the years after that
00:42:16where I felt like I had chances
00:42:18and just I didn't do this right
00:42:19or I didn't do that right.
00:42:22I could go through every single year
00:42:24and tell you where it went wrong.
00:42:26Welcome to this tradition unlike any other.
00:42:30Wow.
00:42:31He's gone off sideways.
00:42:34Welcome to this tradition unlike any other.
00:42:40How do you manage wanting to win this tournament,
00:42:43but not the desire being so big
00:42:45that it becomes an obstacle?
00:42:46Hello, friends.
00:42:48Welcome to this tradition unlike any other.
00:42:52It just hit off a sprinkler head
00:42:54up into the azaleas.
00:42:57Do you think all the expectations
00:42:59about the kind of swan has had an effect?
00:43:01Do you think you found the balance
00:43:03between how that motivates you
00:43:05and how that pressures you?
00:43:06You feel the weight,
00:43:08the scrutiny it takes
00:43:09to be considered the greatest talent in the game.
00:43:12Do you feel like you're sort of middle-aged now
00:43:13or in your prime or how do you see it?
00:43:15Do you believe you'll win this
00:43:17if not this year, some year?
00:43:22Trying to block out the noise is the best thing,
00:43:25but admittedly it was hard for me to do that.
00:43:32I've always been a big responder to encouragement
00:43:35and positive feedback.
00:43:40It's all about the confidence, I find.
00:43:45You see, when Rory started, really,
00:43:48I used to take Rory out every Sunday,
00:43:52play nine holes.
00:43:55I used to change all the holes on the scorecard,
00:43:58the first hole being a par four.
00:44:00I used to change it to a par five.
00:44:05It encouraged Rory, you know,
00:44:07so at the end of the day,
00:44:08we used to go in for the Coke and a pack of the crisps
00:44:11and the boys and the boys say,
00:44:12well, what did you shoot today?
00:44:14Three under.
00:44:14You know, Rory used to love that,
00:44:16you know, he's really in sight, you know.
00:44:17Three under par, that's brilliant, Rory, you know.
00:44:21And you see, when Rory started to shoot under par,
00:44:26he had no fear
00:44:28because it was all in there.
00:44:31So many around the world
00:44:33been raptured by this moment,
00:44:35anxious to see it happen.
00:44:39Yes, it is.
00:44:47Perfect.
00:44:49A different player today
00:44:50than he was in 2011.
00:44:57My start on Sunday in 2025
00:45:00was way worse than my start in 2011.
00:45:05It would have been really easy
00:45:06to get frustrated after that first nine.
00:45:09But I think because of all that experience
00:45:11over the past 14 years,
00:45:13I didn't panic.
00:45:14I knew there was still a long way to go.
00:45:17The club comes out of his hands.
00:45:22It doesn't matter.
00:45:24What a shot.
00:45:29I felt like my patience was rewarded
00:45:31with how I played that hole.
00:45:36And into the hole!
00:45:38It's another birdie
00:45:39for Rory McIlroy.
00:45:43And the triple bogey
00:45:45back in 2011
00:45:47is a distant memory
00:45:50for McIlroy.
00:45:58Bryson,
00:45:58it was surprising to me
00:46:00that he wasn't on his game.
00:46:01I think a lot of people thought
00:46:03he would go out there
00:46:04and really contend.
00:46:07When you had this pairing
00:46:09of Rory Bryson
00:46:10in the first nine holes,
00:46:12and Rory's got a big lead now,
00:46:15it's almost like
00:46:16you forgot there were other players
00:46:18playing in the tournament.
00:46:20Watching Justin Rose
00:46:22a few holes ahead
00:46:24of Rory.
00:46:27Long way away here
00:46:28for birdie at 11.
00:46:29Well, he's going to need
00:46:30something special
00:46:31if that is going to transpire.
00:46:34Oh, that's special!
00:46:38Justin Rose!
00:46:40Not out of it yet!
00:46:44With the emergence
00:46:45of Justin
00:46:45on the back nine,
00:46:46all of a sudden,
00:46:48it's like,
00:46:49okay,
00:46:50you know,
00:46:51here we go.
00:46:56Let's head it
00:46:56toward the first mound.
00:46:58Gentle.
00:47:04That is
00:47:05six inches away
00:47:06from being wet.
00:47:09Said all week
00:47:10he wasn't going to pay
00:47:11any attention
00:47:11to the leaderboards.
00:47:13I wonder if he took
00:47:14a little peek.
00:47:18Just right.
00:47:20As far as Rory's concerned,
00:47:21there's no lead big enough
00:47:22because this guy
00:47:23is charging.
00:47:24Justin Rose
00:47:25for birdie.
00:47:27Oh, my goodness!
00:47:29Tied for second!
00:47:32That brings pressure,
00:47:34but I still had the lead.
00:47:37Should Rory
00:47:39have another stumble,
00:47:41Justin Rose
00:47:41could be in position.
00:47:46Let's see
00:47:47if Rory chooses
00:47:48the conservative target
00:47:49here on 12.
00:47:54Oh!
00:47:56Good!
00:47:57Get out!
00:47:58Get out!
00:47:59Oh, come on!
00:48:00Yes!
00:48:01That's just fine.
00:48:04I made a good
00:48:05two-putt,
00:48:05make three there.
00:48:10I'm like,
00:48:10I've got through
00:48:1110, 11, 12,
00:48:12and even par.
00:48:13Like, I'm
00:48:13very happy.
00:48:17And he will
00:48:18march off
00:48:18to the 13th team.
00:48:22Bobby Jones
00:48:23famously wrote
00:48:24that several tournaments
00:48:26have been won
00:48:26or lost here.
00:48:28A lot of people's
00:48:30chances to win
00:48:31the Masters
00:48:32have become
00:48:33unraveled
00:48:33on the 13th hole.
00:48:37I think this
00:48:38is the golf tournament,
00:48:39this shot right here.
00:48:41There's bunkers
00:48:42to the left,
00:48:43there's water
00:48:44to the front
00:48:44and the right.
00:48:46And his hopes
00:48:47of a first green jacket
00:48:49may have just sunk
00:48:50to the bottom
00:48:50of Ray's Creek.
00:48:52Now we're going
00:48:53into another dimension
00:48:54again.
00:48:58You're trying to overcome
00:48:59all of the history,
00:49:02these memories,
00:49:04all these different
00:49:05things that are going
00:49:07through your head
00:49:08while you're playing
00:49:09that golf course
00:49:09and trying to win
00:49:10this massive tournament.
00:49:16And that's one
00:49:17of the hurdles
00:49:17that I have found
00:49:19so hard to overcome
00:49:20is like you have
00:49:21to get over
00:49:21the demons
00:49:22that you have
00:49:22on that course
00:49:23but you also
00:49:24have to get over
00:49:26all those other
00:49:26little ghosts
00:49:27that are lurking
00:49:28around the corner
00:49:28that aren't yours either.
00:49:36So usually
00:49:37I would approach it
00:49:39as a hole
00:49:40that I can get
00:49:40to the green in two
00:49:41and give myself
00:49:42an eagle opportunity
00:49:43but I didn't want
00:49:44to take on
00:49:45too much risk.
00:49:50I turn to Harry
00:49:51and say
00:49:52at this point
00:49:52I've got a nice
00:49:53little bit of a cushion
00:49:54and I'm like
00:49:54do you like playing
00:49:55this as a three-shotter?
00:49:57And he's like
00:49:57love it.
00:50:00So I hit
00:50:01three-wood off the tee
00:50:09and then I lay up
00:50:10with an eight-iron.
00:50:15The first two shots
00:50:16went as well
00:50:17as they could have.
00:50:21That's that scoreboard
00:50:23I was talking about
00:50:23as you walk up 13
00:50:25it's impossible
00:50:25not to see it.
00:50:27I tried most of the week
00:50:28to avoid those
00:50:29big white scoreboards
00:50:30which is easier
00:50:31said than done.
00:50:34Once I got to the ball
00:50:35I think Justin
00:50:37had just made
00:50:37another birdie.
00:50:41and in.
00:50:43Are you kidding me?
00:50:46And suddenly
00:50:47the pressure
00:50:48is going to become
00:50:49enormous on McElroy.
00:50:52There was a bit
00:50:53of a reaction
00:50:54from the car.
00:51:06I make my backswing
00:51:07and at the last moment
00:51:13I sort of just
00:51:15leaned into it a bit
00:51:17and
00:51:20completely tightened up.
00:51:21Oh, wow.
00:51:29Can't explain it.
00:51:30He's blocked this
00:51:32short little shot
00:51:33by miles.
00:51:36Oh, Lord.
00:51:37Another poor shot
00:51:39under the extreme pressure.
00:51:41So now he's got to go
00:51:42for a bogey.
00:51:44Makes you wonder
00:51:45about the strategy
00:51:46of just backing off
00:51:48and deciding from the tee
00:51:49that you're going to play
00:51:50this as a three-shot
00:51:51or your adrenaline
00:51:52your body
00:51:53has been conditioned
00:51:54to just go for it today.
00:52:03especially the way
00:52:04he played those shots
00:52:05of seven, Jimmy
00:52:06when he went
00:52:06the nine irons
00:52:07through the trees
00:52:08over the trees
00:52:09was so happy
00:52:09and bouncing around
00:52:10and so aggressive.
00:52:14This is crucial.
00:52:16This to limit
00:52:17the damage
00:52:24and that's a double
00:52:26for McIlroy.
00:52:28His fourth
00:52:29of the week.
00:52:31No player
00:52:32has won the Masters
00:52:33after making
00:52:34four double bogeys
00:52:35or worse.
00:52:38And the Masters
00:52:40is wide open
00:52:41once again.
00:52:45And now the spectators
00:52:47these patrons
00:52:48are feeling
00:52:49that something
00:52:49is really brewing
00:52:50over the course
00:52:51of this final
00:52:52couple of holes.
00:52:54It was the first time
00:52:55where I'd had
00:52:56a moment
00:52:57in the tournament
00:52:58where my mind
00:53:02didn't automatically
00:53:03go to like
00:53:04a positive place.
00:53:06Roy's lost a spit
00:53:07in his mouth
00:53:08right now.
00:53:10I cannot believe it.
00:53:23He's got to keep
00:53:24the train
00:53:25on the tracks now.
00:53:29My thing with Augusta
00:53:30I think
00:53:31during the course
00:53:31of my career
00:53:32it would be like
00:53:33one stretch
00:53:34that would like
00:53:35ruin the tournament
00:53:35for me.
00:53:37Big swing at it.
00:53:40and comes up
00:53:41sir.
00:53:45Because a little bit
00:53:46of the scar tissue
00:53:46had built up
00:53:47I was like
00:53:47always waiting
00:53:48for something
00:53:49bad to happen.
00:53:54McElroy
00:53:54for his par.
00:54:02Get in,
00:54:03get in,
00:54:03get in.
00:54:14And he has now
00:54:15lost
00:54:16the lead
00:54:17at the 89th
00:54:18Masters Tournament.
00:54:23Just when you thought
00:54:24it was a sure thing
00:54:25now you're like
00:54:26you can't win now.
00:54:29I had to go
00:54:30and pour
00:54:31Rosie a drink
00:54:32camera down.
00:54:34You know
00:54:35I actually
00:54:36had a drink
00:54:37myself.
00:54:38I mean
00:54:38I know
00:54:39Rory
00:54:39like
00:54:40the back
00:54:40of my hand.
00:54:44You see
00:54:44each year
00:54:45coming up
00:54:46to the Masters
00:54:48Rory was always
00:54:49he wasn't Rory
00:54:51no.
00:54:52He was always
00:54:53very
00:54:55edgy
00:54:56is that the word?
00:54:57If you talked
00:54:58about the Masters
00:54:58he was a bit
00:54:59like jumpy
00:55:00you know.
00:55:02He was trying
00:55:03too hard.
00:55:05I don't know
00:55:05if I'm proud
00:55:06to admit this
00:55:07or not proud
00:55:07to admit this
00:55:08but I've tried
00:55:09a lot of things
00:55:09going into Augusta
00:55:10whether it's
00:55:12getting to the
00:55:12tournament really
00:55:13early
00:55:13getting to the
00:55:14tournament really
00:55:15late
00:55:15not playing the
00:55:16par 3 tournament
00:55:17the day before
00:55:17playing the par 3
00:55:18tournament
00:55:18not doing media
00:55:19one year
00:55:19playing practice
00:55:20rounds the weeks
00:55:21prior
00:55:21or not playing
00:55:22practice rounds
00:55:22the week prior
00:55:24hypnosis
00:55:26no it's not
00:55:27it's not like that
00:55:28it's not hypnosis
00:55:28like you think
00:55:29where
00:55:30you know
00:55:30very deep
00:55:31sleep
00:55:32someone
00:55:33taps you
00:55:33and knocks you
00:55:35out
00:55:35you know
00:55:35there's a little
00:55:37more science
00:55:38to it
00:55:41my game
00:55:41was excelling
00:55:42at like
00:55:43the sort of
00:55:43run of the mill
00:55:44tour stop
00:55:44but once I got
00:55:45to the Masters
00:55:46I would
00:55:47play well
00:55:48but not well
00:55:48enough
00:55:50people would
00:55:50always compare
00:55:51it to earlier
00:55:52in my career
00:55:52and the
00:55:54major record
00:55:55earlier in my
00:55:55career
00:55:56and I started
00:55:56to almost
00:55:58resent the
00:55:59major championships
00:55:59for having
00:56:00such a massive
00:56:03importance
00:56:03in the game
00:56:05it just
00:56:05that it started
00:56:06to eat away
00:56:06at me
00:56:09I hadn't won
00:56:10a major
00:56:10for 10 years
00:56:11now
00:56:14I think I lost
00:56:16probably a little
00:56:16bit of my love
00:56:17for the game
00:56:17in that time
00:56:18period
00:56:23you know
00:56:23that childlike
00:56:24joy
00:56:25joy and
00:56:26enthusiasm
00:56:28how you gonna
00:56:29get out of
00:56:29that one
00:56:32I've always
00:56:33been very
00:56:34comfortable
00:56:34on my own
00:56:36and
00:56:37sometimes I'm
00:56:38stubborn
00:56:39and sometimes
00:56:39I'm reluctant
00:56:42to reach out
00:56:43for help
00:56:44and I feel
00:56:45like I can
00:56:45figure it out
00:56:46on my own
00:56:48but I needed
00:56:49to get over
00:56:49that
00:56:57I remember
00:56:58I was really
00:56:58struggling
00:56:59and I drove
00:57:00from the
00:57:01Scottish Open
00:57:02to the Open
00:57:03Championship
00:57:04at Birkdale
00:57:04and I listened
00:57:05to the audiobook
00:57:07Golf is Not a Game
00:57:08of Perfect
00:57:08by Bob Rotella
00:57:10too often
00:57:12Freud's theories
00:57:13are boiled down
00:57:13to a belief
00:57:14that people
00:57:15are the victim
00:57:15of circumstances
00:57:16beyond their control
00:57:18I don't buy that
00:57:19a person
00:57:21with great dreams
00:57:22can achieve
00:57:23great things
00:57:25a person
00:57:26without the confidence
00:57:27to pursue
00:57:27his or her dreams
00:57:28has consigned
00:57:29himself or herself
00:57:30to a life
00:57:31of frustration
00:57:32and mediocrity
00:57:34I've known
00:57:35Bob Rotella
00:57:36basically the whole way
00:57:38throughout my career
00:57:38and I'm like
00:57:39why don't I just
00:57:40call him
00:57:40why don't I
00:57:41just call him
00:57:44you know
00:57:44we're all dealing
00:57:45with doubt
00:57:46and fear
00:57:48failure never
00:57:49ruins anybody
00:57:51doubt and fear
00:57:51will kill you
00:57:54with Rory
00:57:55I mean
00:57:55we prepare
00:57:57by anticipating
00:57:58we're going to
00:57:58miss all kinds
00:57:59of shots and putts
00:58:00we're going to
00:58:00get all kinds
00:58:01of bad breaks
00:58:03but you have
00:58:03to see what
00:58:04you want
00:58:05rather than
00:58:06what you don't
00:58:06want or fear
00:58:07might happen
00:58:13Rory McIlroy
00:58:14has watched
00:58:15his lead
00:58:15disappear
00:58:17he knows
00:58:17the magnitude
00:58:18of the moment
00:58:19now
00:58:22Rory and I
00:58:23talk a lot
00:58:24about
00:58:24how do you feel
00:58:25when you're
00:58:25playing your best
00:58:26golf
00:58:27you know
00:58:27when you're
00:58:28like the happiest
00:58:29when you're
00:58:30most joy filled
00:58:31and you're
00:58:32really loving
00:58:33the game
00:58:33that you tell
00:58:33me you love
00:58:35when you walk
00:58:35off the golf
00:58:36course
00:58:36every night
00:58:37if you can
00:58:37go back
00:58:38to your room
00:58:38look in the
00:58:39mirror
00:58:39and go
00:58:40man I loved
00:58:41how I felt
00:58:41out there
00:58:42today
00:58:42you know
00:58:43you gave
00:58:43yourself
00:58:43your best
00:58:44chance
00:58:45and that's
00:58:46all we can
00:58:46do
00:58:48so can
00:58:48he hit
00:58:49one great
00:58:50tee shot
00:58:50on the
00:58:51par 5
00:58:51and it
00:58:51changes
00:58:52day
00:58:58he could
00:58:59be blocked
00:59:00out
00:59:00he's in
00:59:01the fairway
00:59:02but he could
00:59:02be blocked
00:59:03out
00:59:03with his
00:59:03second
00:59:03shot
00:59:05a little
00:59:05grimace
00:59:06from him
00:59:08Rory's got
00:59:09to play
00:59:09about a
00:59:0920 yard
00:59:10hook
00:59:10he's hitting
00:59:10out of
00:59:11the shadows
00:59:11left hand
00:59:12side
00:59:12of 15
00:59:14yeah I mean
00:59:15best case
00:59:16scenario
00:59:16is throw
00:59:17it in that
00:59:17right bunker
00:59:18and try
00:59:18and get
00:59:18it up
00:59:18and down
00:59:21I needed
00:59:22to pull
00:59:22something
00:59:23out of
00:59:23the bag
00:59:23at that
00:59:23point
00:59:24because
00:59:25you know
00:59:25I was
00:59:25going
00:59:26in the
00:59:26wrong
00:59:26direction
00:59:26when you're
00:59:27amped up
00:59:28and when
00:59:28you're
00:59:28under
00:59:28pressure
00:59:29those are
00:59:30the hardest
00:59:30are
00:59:31for me
00:59:31anyway
00:59:32they've
00:59:32been the
00:59:32hardest
00:59:33shots
00:59:33to hit
00:59:38I stood
00:59:39up
00:59:41and I
00:59:41made the
00:59:42most
00:59:43trusting
00:59:43committed
00:59:44swing
00:59:50I knew
00:59:51it as
00:59:51soon as
00:59:51I hit
00:59:51it
00:59:51and that's
00:59:52when I
00:59:52started
00:59:52to walk
00:59:53after it
00:59:55is this
00:59:56enough
00:59:58it is
01:00:18that was
01:00:18one of the
01:00:19most fantastic
01:00:19shots I've
01:00:20ever seen
01:00:21first of all
01:00:21I don't think
01:00:22many people
01:00:22would have
01:00:22tried it
01:00:23but I think
01:00:23he felt like
01:00:24he needed to
01:00:24at the time
01:00:26sometimes you
01:00:27feel like you
01:00:27need to make
01:00:27a shot
01:00:28and you do
01:00:28it
01:00:30I'll remember
01:00:30the feeling
01:00:31of hitting
01:00:32that shot
01:00:34for the rest
01:00:35of my life
01:00:38I don't know
01:00:39if I'll ever
01:00:39hit a better
01:00:41golf shot
01:00:43under that
01:00:43amount of
01:00:44pressure
01:00:44again
01:00:45in my
01:00:45career
01:00:52ploys
01:00:52to make
01:00:53eagle
01:00:54to take
01:00:55the lead
01:01:04Rory has
01:01:05a chance
01:01:05to put
01:01:06a hand
01:01:06on the
01:01:06light switch
01:01:07right here
01:01:16that was
01:01:17feeble
01:01:19he goes
01:01:20back to
01:01:20look at
01:01:21it
01:01:21there's
01:01:21the bad
01:01:21news
01:01:21he's got
01:01:22to live
01:01:22with this
01:01:22this is
01:01:23about
01:01:23exercising
01:01:23demons
01:01:24here
01:01:24Carl
01:01:24he's
01:01:25not done
01:01:25exercise
01:01:25I don't
01:01:26know why
01:01:27he went
01:01:27back over
01:01:27to look
01:01:28at it
01:01:28that was
01:01:28a bad
01:01:28stroke
01:01:29he knows
01:01:29it
01:01:32so it's
01:01:32a pretty
01:01:33still
01:01:33to take
01:01:34the lead
01:01:36excruciating
01:01:37what you've
01:01:37got to do
01:01:37to try
01:01:38to close
01:01:38this deal
01:01:42one day
01:01:43you know
01:01:44when he
01:01:44was a
01:01:44teenager
01:01:45I heard
01:01:46somebody
01:01:46in the
01:01:47crowd
01:01:47say
01:01:49if that
01:01:49kid
01:01:49could put
01:01:51he'd
01:01:51win
01:01:51everything
01:01:57it was
01:01:58my least
01:01:59favorite
01:01:59part of
01:01:59the game
01:02:00growing up
01:02:02I always
01:02:02enjoyed
01:02:03the longer
01:02:04part of
01:02:05the game
01:02:05better
01:02:06I always
01:02:06enjoyed
01:02:06the driver
01:02:07always
01:02:07enjoyed
01:02:08hitting
01:02:08iron
01:02:11the closer
01:02:12you get
01:02:12to the
01:02:12hole
01:02:14the more
01:02:14tense
01:02:14you can
01:02:15be
01:02:17I always
01:02:18felt like
01:02:19well
01:02:19it has
01:02:20to feel

01:09:12After that disappointment, will he be able to regroup, reset?
01:09:23I should have got it done in regulation, I should have made a four from where I drove
01:09:28that ball.
01:09:29There's just all these different things that are going through your head.
01:09:35He just wasn't up to it.
01:09:37He underperforms in the heat of battle.
01:09:41He got on the precipice of winning this tournament and instead of driving over the line, he hesitated.
01:09:56It's a pretty long walk from the 18th green to scoring.
01:10:00There is a definite tension in the air.
01:10:06But then I'm walking with Harry and Harry said to me, he said, pal, we would have taken
01:10:13this position on Monday morning.
01:10:14And like it just snapped me into such a good frame of mind.
01:10:19And I was like, yeah, we would have taken this position Monday morning.
01:10:22Absolutely.
01:10:24We got on the golf cart and it was like the first bit of peace that I'd had all day.
01:10:31It was like this quiet, serene, you know, long shadows.
01:10:36Here are the birds chirping.
01:10:37I was like, this is, this is really nice.
01:10:41It just got me thinking so positively about the moment, you know, I had a second chance.
01:10:54The first thing I thought was, all right, well, let's just hit the same shot that you
01:10:59just hit 10 minutes ago.
01:11:00Make the same swing and hit the same drive.
01:11:05Sudden death up the 18th for the Masters green jacket.
01:11:11One of these two players is going to go home absolutely crestfallen.
01:11:25And that looks good.
01:11:27He's ripped that.
01:11:28He's absolutely ripped it.
01:11:30And that one is sailing down the fairway, completely outdriven.
01:11:35Justin Rose, so much adrenaline in that, two fantastic tee shots.
01:11:41JR hit a really good drive and I hit a good drive, but JR was a good, I don't know,

01:11:45yards behind me.
01:11:47This is a fantastic opportunity for him to go ahead and put the pressure on McElroy.
01:11:59Oh, hits right next to the hole.
01:12:03Actually a little unlucky that it got stuck right there.
01:12:06I thought it would have fed back a couple of feet.
01:12:09He hit an amazing shot right at the pin.
01:12:12And I remember when it was in the air, I was just going, oh no.
01:12:15And then again, I had basically the same shot as I had in regulation, but I had a flat lie.
01:12:47What a shot from McElroy.
01:12:50What a shot from McElroy.
01:12:51These two Europeans are just going at it toe to toe.
01:13:05And now it all comes down to who has got the guts to hold the slippery putt.
01:13:12And Rose goes first.
01:13:31The door is open again for McElroy to finish it off.
01:13:46This is two and a half, three feet.
01:13:49What an approach shot from McElroy.
01:13:51What a way to regather himself after the disappointment in regulation play.
01:14:17Look at the long shadows.
01:14:19It's symbolic this moment.
01:14:23The journey it's taken to get here.
01:14:26For all this history.
01:14:44The long journey is over.
01:14:47McElroy has his masterpiece.
01:15:05I just screamed at the top of my lungs twice.
01:15:12Just like this visceral release that I've never felt before in my life.
01:15:17And it's like, just that moment of, it's almost like your whole career flashes before your eyes.
01:15:27And it's like all the ups and the downs and the disappointments and the, you know, every Sunday night driving
01:15:39away from that golf club feeling disappointment.
01:15:42And, you know, it made it all worth it.
01:15:47It was Rory McElroy against Rory McElroy.
01:15:51And that has been the story of his career.
01:15:57My wedding day was a wonderful day.
01:16:00And Poppy being born was a wonderful day.
01:16:03But they were, they were, they were happy, joyful.
01:16:07This was like, pure relief.
01:16:15This is dumb.
01:16:23When that last putt went in.
01:16:26You couldn't have stopped me crying.
01:16:29For love and her money.
01:16:30Two and a half hours I cried for.
01:16:33You know, that's all the hurt over.
01:16:36It was one of the, the best things I've ever watched.
01:16:46I think a lot of the people have been on that journey with me.
01:16:51And I think to see how happy they were for me to get it done, was like really meaningful and
01:16:57special.
01:16:59Like I never, never in my wildest dreams that I think I would get to this point.
01:17:06You know, as an eight year old, yes, I said I want to win all the majors and I want
01:17:09to join that list of people that have won the Grand Slam.
01:17:14It was probably quite naive of me to dream like that in some way, but it's what always kept me
01:17:21going.
01:17:24I want to make eight year old Rory proud.
01:17:28And make him proud that you didn't give up.
01:17:32Never landed in my mind.
01:17:35Why not?
01:17:37Why is there only six people has ever done it?
01:17:41Must be very special.
01:17:43And I always knew my son was very, very special.
01:17:55I love you too.
01:18:00And last but certainly not least, over to my left, my family, my team.
01:18:18They've been on this journey with me the whole way through.
01:18:23They know the burden that I've carried to, you know, come here every year and try and try and try
01:18:28again.
01:18:31And the one thing I would say to my daughter Poppy that's sitting over there, never give up on your
01:18:37dreams.
01:18:38Never, ever give up on your dreams.
01:18:46It was never going to be easy.
01:18:48It was never going to be straightforward.
01:18:50It was always going to be a little messy.
01:18:58Yeah, was Augusta my white whale? It probably was.
01:19:01That was the white whale of my career.
01:19:03And I'm glad that I caught it.
01:19:08I wouldn't say I'll ever tame it or I'll ever have it fully under control.
01:19:12But I think to find that persistence and to find whatever it is I needed to find within myself to
01:19:19keep coming back and to keep trying.
01:19:22That's the thing I'm proudest of.
01:19:25I'm proudest of not losing hope.
01:19:44I'm proudest of.
01:19:46I'm proudest of.
