00:04up next on American restoration check that thing out normally stuff shows up in the back of a
00:10pickup truck this thing is the size of a pickup truck I actually have no clue how much time it's
00:16gonna take me to do oh god my guys won't touch this cowboy I'll just think it's his name spelled
00:23wrong codex feminine care what a sweetheart are you shopping for your mom actually this is for my
00:33dad okay remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work
00:41my name is Rick Dale and I bring these things back to life every restoration has its own set
00:48of challenges there's no owner's manual for what we do but there's no job we can't handle
01:07whoa check that thing out every day at the shop keeps me on my toes normally stuff shows up in
01:14the back of the pickup truck this thing is the size of a pickup truck I'm Rick Tom good
01:19sweet oh I'm good to meet you this is my brother Ron Ron come to Rick's today to have him
01:24restore
01:24my late 1800s standard oil fuel oil delivery wagon it looks like it's been rode hard put away wet but
01:30I know that Rick will be able to make it look really good when he's done Tom is this like
01:35in
01:35the 1800s yeah we're looking around 1888 89 what is it though well it's a fuel oil wagon used for
01:44delivering kerosene and stove oil good God yeehaw this is cool I see there's three different faucets
01:51up here it's a 500 gallon three compartment tanker front compartment in the middle compartment 200 and
01:56the back compartment is 100 gallons it's probably got a baffle inside in between rivets are for the
02:00baffle back in the day people needed kerosene for lamps oil for heating and cooking thanks to good
02:06engineering and sturdy construction this wagon was able to transport up to three different fuels safely
02:11it was basically the first supertanker what was the horsepower of this thing two there are actually
02:18mules everything I saw so I bet you the mules were really not too happy about backing up to this
02:23and
02:23hooking up were they no I mean there's a lot of weight for a wagon if you had fuel in
02:28this thing and it was
02:29between seven and eight pounds per gallon that's four thousand pounds just in the weight of the fuel
02:34alone mules are mules though man they told a lot of stuff I mean we use them for everything so
02:38they're
02:38strong and not too bright yeah and that's why you're my delivery guy same reason nice so Tom where'd
02:47you get this uh we found it in Summit Valley California we had a customer of ours that we were
02:51delivering fuel to so you're a distributor you have big trucks that run around they don't look like this
02:57so bigger horses too what do you want to do to this we want to do it as original as
03:03we can I've
03:03got a picture pretty much what they used to look like back in the day this is cool give us
03:08something
03:09to go by I've worked on cars and motorcycles before but nothing ever this big I can tell right now
03:15we're
03:15gonna need a lot of muscle and time to make this fuel wagon look the way it did when it
03:19was new so as
03:20far as what we're gonna do for the restoration we'll start tearing it apart I actually have no clue how
03:25much time it's gonna take me to do it could be five hours it could be 50 hours there's a
03:31lot of heat
03:31and torching undoing hopefully not breaking any bolts once we get it apart we'll blast it all down
03:37to bare metal build the wood we got quite a bit of bodywork to do all that work done and
03:42probably
03:43looking right around 95 to 10 grand
03:50this is this is a big project so uh
03:59about what we're looking at Rick right in that range I think that's fair this thing is priceless and we
04:05can't wait to get it done and see what it looks like thank you very much for bringing it in
04:08appreciate it we'll go in the office and do some paperwork and Ron
04:12it's gonna take that thing off well it's been a dream of us for quite a while to get this
04:17thing
04:18restored and we're really excited and happy to be here today and we can't wait to see what it's gonna
04:23look like I guess I gotta go find a horse or a donkey or a mule
04:34all right so I got this in that thing's weighs 4,000 pounds you and me pods you and me
04:41this fuel
04:41wagon is a huge challenge because it's old heavy and absolutely enormous we're gonna have to work on
04:48this in parts and the first step is to remove the big steel tank from the frame of this wagon
04:57what are we doing coming over here watching it here yeah
05:01this thing falls is gonna be like kindlin wood
05:07this frame is extremely fragile basically rotted wood and rusted metal we're gonna have to tear it down
05:13before it falls apart it's gonna take a long time getting this thing apart do they decide they're
05:21gonna go with uh Michelin's or BF Goodrich
05:32how come a 42 is that big but a 44 is so much smaller a 42 hey do you remember
05:38how I told you that I
05:39wanted to restore something for that breast cancer awareness fundraiser yeah I've got it Kelly's been
05:45telling me about a charity auction that she's wanted to participate in for a while now she's great at
05:50tracking down parts and new items to restore so this could be anything you gotta be kidding me you
05:59say you can restore anything you're gonna do this my guys won't touch this cowboy I'll just think it's
06:06his name spelled wrong he won't even know what this thing is it's a kotech feminine napkin machine and
06:21this hospital specialty company um they've been business like a long long time they wouldn't sell
06:26them in the store they'd be in the store and nobody buy them you know so they started put them
06:30in vending
06:30machine it's the same with condoms whoo condoms were the same thing and they'd be becoming more
06:35popular and then people finally came about and started buying them in the stores this was the
06:39only way to buy a kotex feminine napkin that's so awkward that's such an awkward way to say I've
06:45done a lot of vending machines in my day but this thing it's the first and hopefully the last
06:52feminine napkin dispenser we ever have to do so what's the inside look like though it's either rotary
06:57or or it's just got the little shelves like a candy machine although it's quite unlike a candy
07:02machine nothing good these are needed okay don't be shy don't be embarrassed even though my guys may
07:09not be jazzed about working on this machine it is vintage and Kelly wants to auction it off for a
07:14great cause so you got to do what you got to do my idea is to paint it baby pink
07:21oh god do a pretty
07:23pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness and we'll just polish this up and it'll be done all right
07:29I'll give you a hand with it but I I can't get started now I got a lot going on
07:32okay all right
07:34babe thanks well I'm not touching that so good luck with that you know what you're gonna have to man
07:41you're gonna have to get me out of some of this cowboy I'll never hear the end of it rest
07:53of my
07:53life cowboy is freaking Kotex machine please oh hell no I ain't touching this Kotex machine Kelly is out
08:01of her mind come on where's the tools if I'm not gonna get out of tearing this down I'm gonna
08:06get it
08:06over as quick as possible awesome are we finished no now we got to get this mech out right there
08:17and
08:17then there's one on back let's leave that thing together cool bag it and tag it I'm done thanks
08:26cowboy I need to get the hell out of this room for anybody finds out I helped Kelly with this
08:31one
08:44see they sent me the heavy hitter out here that's right the other day we got this giant late 1800s
08:50fuel delivery wagon in to restore we took the tank off of it now I have Ron and Kyle breaking
08:56down the
08:56base I hope Ron doesn't cry if he gets a splinter look at that power we got one nut off
09:03don't worry about it
09:05I got it there's so many pieces on this thing it's going to take forever to tear it down I
09:10guess
09:10we just have to take it apart one rusty bolt at a time all right it's a start
09:34my dad is sending me on a run to go get feminine napkins I have no idea how my uncle
09:40Ron weaseled his
09:41way out of going on this run I mean he probably would have found some enjoyment in doing it I
09:45hate my
09:50life
09:51oh
09:51oh
09:56feminine care
10:00Kotex Kotex ultra thin now why ultra thin as opposed to the other one is ultra thick I
10:11don't see much of a difference heavy flow does that mean body fit how are these different besides
10:22the bar oh that's how they're different I had no idea there were so many options this is horrible I
10:29swear I'm gonna have the word protection in my nightmares for months fuel tank is huge it's
10:40taking forever just to sand blast a small patch if I'm ever gonna get this done I'm gonna need some
10:45help bodywork on the tank has stalled Bradley came to me and said that he couldn't sandblast the
10:51paint what's the problem out here I've been blasting on this for almost two hours two hours I mean that's
10:57gonna kill us I mean it it's gonna take almost two weeks it looks like powder coating on there the
11:03powder coating process is like to heat up the metal they put on powder and then heat it back up
11:07again
11:07and electrically like charges itself to the metal and it doesn't come off all you're really gonna
11:12need to do is scuff the thing and then we'll be ready to go with bodywork okay cool all right
11:17powder coating is actually a great primer all that we're gonna need to do on this thing is scuff the
11:22rest of it then we can do the bodywork and paint it
11:32oh my god I don't even know what I'm looking for tampons are associated with toxic shocks in
11:40here what's gonna work in this machine like for some reason my dad sent me to the drugstore to get
11:48feminine napkins I don't know what could be more embarrassing than this oh wait nothing nothing
11:55take some of those all right I hope I have enough because that's what I'm getting
12:04how are you doing all right
12:10what a sweetheart are you shopping for your mom actually this is for my dad but yeah okay I'm gonna
12:18need all of these so that is 32 37 can you double bag those
12:40there we go the fuel wagon project is big enough to involve just about everyone at the shop
12:50Phil and Brett Lee are welding up patches for the tank and smoothing out the surface
12:54yeah not bad not bad all right so you ready to put the back on yeah let's put the back
12:59on
13:00meanwhile Kyle and cowboy are making a new seat patterned after the metal framing they came with
13:05the wagon all right now you're gonna put the springs in the center of these two
13:14because the legs on that spring is gonna stick out so far you're only gonna get one person there
13:19unless they're gonna be straddling the spring how many people's gonna be riding around on a fuel
13:23wagon a guy and a dog that's about it what if a guy wants to take his wife out on
13:30the fuel run she
13:31can ride on the back all right let's go to lunch yeah I'm starving I brought some beans want some
13:40beans
13:40beans my dad sent me to the drugstore where I learned way too much about feminine products
13:52I swear I'm scarred for life all right great you got supplies yeah I got
14:10the fuel wagon is ready for paint Brelli had a tough time sandblasting until we realized that
14:16the original powder coating just needed a slight scuffing to get it ready for priming and now the
14:21new paints going on nice and smooth are we ready to test it yeah I'd say we need to test
14:33it right
14:34now but yeah yeah Tyler got a little bag of you got a bag of what you got a bag
14:41of product earlier I
14:44sent Tyler to the drugstore to get supplies for the Kotex machine so hopefully we're gonna find
14:49something that works for our test run we need a box because this thing here is gonna this is gonna
14:54get
14:54bound up on us pretty good when you pull this you ready yeah oh how cute that worked so it's
15:02close but
15:02we need to do something about some boxes we're on the final stages of the Kotex project and just in
15:11time we're about to head off to the event to auction it off look at all the pink today we're
15:20at the Susan G
15:21Komen breast cancer fundraising event and I'm so excited that we get to auction off that Kotex machine this
15:28thing may be small but it definitely wasn't easy I got a shop full of guys and getting them to
15:33work on
15:33something specifically for women was like pulling teeth but they all came together to make this
15:45happen this project was a good amount of work but it'll be all for nothing if it doesn't make this
15:53charity some cash I really hope some of these ladies see the beauty in this piece my daughter
16:05is one of the top breast radiologists in America I knew that she would want this I made a bid
16:11immediately
16:16and then they started going over my price limit and I called her up and she said go for it
16:23mom
16:35we found this thing and brought it back to life it really is awesome looking but the best part of
16:40it
16:40all is all the money is going straight to charity this is a lot of pieces Carnegie Company USA all
17:01of
17:01the guys have been part of the massive fuel wagon project this thing is in a million painted polished
17:07and stained pieces now all we got to do is put it together oh where we go hi Kelly hi
17:32Tom how are you
17:33very good yourself yeah likewise so I guess you're here to pick up the fuel wagon most certainly am
17:39come down here today to Rick's restoration to pick up my fuel wagon you excited yes I am I'm a
17:45third
17:45generation oil company and it would be nice to have it in the office it was in pretty bad shape
17:50so I can't
17:50wait to see what what it's gonna look like yeah I don't have any actual mules in my shop but
17:56I've got
17:56an idea to reveal it to the customer that's gonna be the next best thing yeah let's go boy yeah
18:02let's go
18:06I got some fuel deliver wow that looks awesome yeah those horses are mules I didn't have any donkeys so
18:14I
18:14had to go with jackasses all right great job yeah that looks sweet Rick you like it most certainly do
18:22that is awesome I was overwhelmed I know Rick does some awesome work but they just did a fantastic job
18:28just from the front all the way to the back this was just so much work so much more than
18:33actually I
18:34thought it was I mean I this thing was it was more than a car to be quite honest because
18:38you know we
18:38took it apart took the tank off and then we started to sandblast the tank well the tank was powder
18:44coated
18:44it's a pain trying to take it off come to find out on the powder coating was that it was
18:49actually a
18:50really good base and it actually holds better than a lot of the primers we painted a lot of green
18:54base
18:55coat on it and then we painted a lot of clear-up Ted our pen striper artist came in and
19:00did this we
19:01matched the same design that was on you know in this era Cowboy did the front seat and the place
19:06where you put your feet Jeff and Cowboy ended up doing that whole back toolbox and then now you can
19:13just store whatever you need in there yeah that's where they put the five gallon buckets in here right
19:17that was quite a few hours there but the frame itself was probably the biggest deal pretty much
19:21redid all the wood too right yeah every single piece of wood on this thing's been redone it's
19:26all in oak we took off what you gave us and we had to you know match it the best
19:31we could put it on and
19:32then we had to reshape it just the frame alone they probably had a hundred hours on this total piece
19:37has inbound hours about 318 hours wow yeah a lot of time it was it needed work all right so
19:45is this
19:46how you imagine it knowing and seeing what you've done Rick yeah I knew it was going to come out
19:50beautiful this is this is awesome happy yeah I sure am all right let's go in and finish out the
19:55paperwork
19:56and then I'll get my guys to lift this beast up onto the trailer okay all right very good I
20:01can't wait to
20:01bring this back to the company and to show it to everybody they're all excited and it's going to
20:06be quite a surprise to everybody it looks actually brand new and I think it can last another hundred
20:12years dude watch this sucks all the jobs we do suck well at least I have someone here to keep
20:21you
20:21company yeah there are times around the shop when my dad makes Braley and I do really low-end jobs
20:27right
20:27now he's got us cleaning tools we still have the bottom drawers to do this has to be one of
20:32the
20:32worst jobs around here it takes forever this should finish out our day hey what I need one of you
20:42guys
20:42going to run oh no I'll do it I don't want to do this you're gonna leave me here yep
20:47you're gonna be
20:49doing this all day too come on let's go all right take that thanks don't forget my receipt oh my
21:00god
21:01really with the Kotex again I hate my job
