00:07As James Gunn continues shaping his new DC universe, there's already a lot of curiosity
00:12about how the Bat family will fit into everything, because Gotham is such a massive part of DC
00:17storytelling. Even though Chapter 1, titled Gods and Monsters, is still in its early stages,
00:23it's pretty clear that characters connected to Batman are eventually going to play a big role,
00:28and among all of them, one character fans keep bringing up again and again is Nightwing,
00:34also known as Dick Grayson. The interesting thing is that Nightwing hasn't really had his moment on
00:40the big screen yet, even though he's one of the most important characters in Batman's entire
00:45mythology. Because of that, the DCU feels like the perfect place to finally give him a proper spotlight,
00:51especially since Gunn has already hinted that the Bat family will exist in this universe.
00:56That alone opens the door for Nightwing to show up, whether it's in a supporting role first,
01:01or jumping straight into something bigger. There's also been a bunch of fan-casting discussions,
01:07and one name that keeps popping up is Louis Tan. He's acknowledged the support and seems genuinely
01:13interested in the role, which adds another layer to the conversation. He's talked about how much
01:18he likes the character, and how he feels he could bring something unique to it. That kind of enthusiasm
01:24always helps, because it shows that actors aren't just looking for another role,
01:28they actually care about the character they might play. At the same time, Tan also mentioned another
01:34character he'd love to take on, which is Red Hood. That's interesting because it highlights how
01:39different corners of the Bat family could fit into Gunn's DCU. Nightwing represents growth,
01:45independence, and leadership, while Red Hood leans into a darker,
01:49more violent side of Gotham's world. So depending on the tone Gunn wants, there are a bunch of
01:55directions he could go. But focusing on Nightwing specifically, the biggest question isn't just
02:00casting, it's how Gunn would introduce him, and what kind of story he'd choose. Nightwing isn't just
02:07former Robin, he's a character with his own identity, his own city, and his own struggles.
02:12If the DCU wants to do him justice, it can't just treat him like an extension of Batman,
02:18it has to give him something that stands on its own. One of the most natural ways to bring him
02:23in
02:23would be through The Brave and the Bold, which is already confirmed as part of the DCU slate.
02:28That movie is expected to feature a more experienced Batman, which means Dick Grayson would likely
02:34already have moved on from being Robin. So instead of showing his origin again, the film could
02:40introduce him as Nightwing right away, which would save time and make him feel more established.
02:45But even though that's a good starting point, a solo Nightwing project is where things could
02:50really get interesting. Once he steps out of Gotham and into his own space, the storytelling possibilities
02:56open up a lot more. His city, Bloodhaven, has a very different vibe compared to Gotham.
03:02It's rougher, more corrupt in some ways, and less romanticized, which makes it perfect for a grounded,
03:08character-driven story. If Gunn decides to give Nightwing a solo film or series, he'll need a
03:14strong comic storyline to base it on, and there are a few standout options. One of the most fitting
03:19choices would be Nightwing Year One, because it focuses on Dick's transition from Robin to Nightwing.
03:26This story shows his struggle to step out of Batman's shadow, which is a crucial part of his
03:31identity. It's emotional, it's personal, and it gives audiences a clear understanding of who he is,
03:37and why he chooses a different path. But although Year One is a great foundation,
03:42it's not the most intense or brutal story the character has. If Gunn really wants to push
03:47boundaries and give Nightwing something that feels raw and impactful, then a storyline like
03:52Nightwing The New Order could be a bold choice. This comic flips the entire DC world by showing a
03:59future where Dick Grayson leads a movement that suppresses superpowers. It's darker, morally complex,
04:05and forces Nightwing into a position where he has to make impossible decisions. That kind of story
04:11would stand out, especially in a cinematic universe that's trying to balance hope with darker themes.
04:18Still, if the goal is to go even more brutal and grounded, then Gunn might look toward elements
04:23from Batman Under the Red Hood combined with Nightwing's involvement. Even though it's technically a Batman
04:29story, it deeply connects to Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, and it explores themes of failure,
04:35loss, and violence in a very direct way. By adapting parts of that narrative into a Nightwing-focused
04:42project, the DCU could deliver something emotionally heavy while still keeping the action intense.
04:48Another strong and arguably more brutal Nightwing-centered arc comes from Nightwing by Chuck Dixon,
04:54particularly the Bloodhaven era. This run dives into street-level crime, corruption,
05:00and the psychological toll of being a hero without Batman's resources. It's not flashy,
05:06but it's gritty and grounded, which could translate really well on screen. Instead of world-ending stakes,
05:13the focus is on survival, justice, and the cost of doing the right thing in a broken city.
05:18What makes these darker storylines important is that they show Nightwing isn't just a lighter
05:23version of Batman. Although he's more optimistic, he still deals with serious challenges, and sometimes
05:29those challenges are just as brutal, if not more, because he doesn't operate with the same level of
05:34fear or control that Batman does. That contrast is what makes him compelling, because he chooses hope
05:40even when things get messy. At the same time, Gunn's style could bring something unique to the character.
05:47He's known for balancing humor, heart, and intensity, so a Nightwing project under his direction wouldn't feel
05:54overly grim all the time. Instead, it would likely mix lighter character moments with heavier themes, which
06:01actually fits Dick Grayson perfectly. Even though his stories can get dark, he's still one of the most human and
06:07relatable heroes in the DC universe. There's also the possibility of connecting Nightwing to a larger team,
06:14like the Teen Titans. A team-up film could explore his past as Robin, while also setting up his future
06:21as a leader. That kind of approach would give audiences a full picture of his journey, because
06:26they'd see where he started and where he's going. But even then, a solo project would still be necessary
06:32to fully explore his character. Another factor to consider is how previous adaptations have handled him.
06:39Brenton Thwaites portrayed the character in the Titans show, where his transition from Robin to
06:44Nightwing was a major focus. That version gave fans a taste of what the character can be in live action,
06:51but a big screen version in the DCU could take things to a whole new level in terms of scale
06:56and storytelling. So when you put everything together, it feels like Nightwing is in a really strong
07:02position to become a key part of Gunn's DCU. The foundation is there, the fan interest is there,
07:09and the character has a bunch of rich storylines to draw from. But the real challenge will be choosing
07:14the right tone and the right story, because that decision will define how audiences connect with him.
07:21In the end, if Gunn goes for a solo Nightwing project, the smartest move would be to start with
07:26something like Year One to establish the character, and then build toward a darker, more brutal storyline
07:33inspired by runs like The New Order or the Bloodhaven arcs. That way, the audience gets both sides of the
07:39character, the hopeful hero and the one who has to face some of the harshest realities of his world.
07:44And if that balance is done right, Nightwing could easily become one of the standout heroes of the
07:50entire DCU. And that wraps up today's video. If you want to stay in the loop with all the latest
