00:00I would like you to meet, by all means, the greatest wrestler in the entire world, Mr. Rowdy Roddy Piper.
00:08How are ya?
00:09Hi-ho!
00:10Come in and sit down.
00:12Loud.
00:13Your ears are all nasty. I know that your nose is smeared all over your face.
00:18Controversial.
00:19We know how intelligent you are.
00:21Oh, yeah.
00:21And you do, huh?
00:22Yeah.
00:23Merciless.
00:24He's gonna go back to the chain. He's got it wrapped around the fist.
00:27As dangerous as he was in the ring, Rowdy Roddy Piper was absolutely lethal with a microphone in his hand.
00:33Hold up there, Wayne. Stay safe.
00:35Today, we look back at one of the most impactful villains in WWE history, Rowdy Roddy Piper.
00:42You do not go rock at a man who's got a machine gun.
00:46This is WWE's greatest moments.
00:50Nice to have him, isn't it?
00:53He's just a man!
00:55Oh, my God! What the hell are you doing?
01:00Absolutely unbelievable!
01:01Look, baby, I'm a good girl.
01:09Welcome, everyone, to WWE's greatest moments. I'm Michael Cole.
01:13And on this edition, we're looking back at the career of one of the most polarizing superstars of all time,
01:18Rowdy Roddy Piper.
01:20Upon bursting on the professional wrestling scene, Piper's malicious magnetism and complete lack of a filter drew the eyes of
01:27the world directly to him.
01:28He had no problem sharing his controversial opinions.
01:31You could wind up looking like this. I painted this myself.
01:34And soon enough, the hot rod had his own talk show where he could torment his guests however he pleased,
01:42Piper's Pit.
01:46We take you now, ladies and gentlemen, to Piper's Pit.
01:49We'd like to flatly state the views of Mr. Piper or those of Mr. Piper alone.
01:54First Piper's Pit, I believe, was a gentleman named Frankie Williams.
01:59Nobody knew anything about it.
02:00Being the kind of person that I am, and I like to give everybody a fair break.
02:05Piper's Pit was the Tonight Show where the host could end up beating up the guests.
02:11Frank Williams, first of all, I don't know where you're coming from.
02:15I'm from Columbus, Ohio.
02:16Right there, that one statement set the tone for the rest of Piper's Pit.
02:22I've never lost a match in Columbus, Ohio. Have you ever lost a match?
02:27Yeah.
02:28I have never seen you win a match in my whole career of watching you.
02:31Maybe what you do, maybe you should be making pizza.
02:33I'm not going on nobody.
02:34And now the camera man's going, you know, get off of me.
02:38It's as simple as that.
02:39I might be allowed to register, but I'm still in there.
02:41I got another play on nobody.
02:44You had to be ready.
02:45You know, you never knew when he'd turn on you or he wanted to.
02:48He could chop you down to size pretty quick.
02:51That's incredible.
02:53And it was one of the first times I think I said,
02:56Just when they think they got the answers, I changed the questions.
03:01This film said it.
03:02People just ran, did you see that?
03:05And it set the tone for everything.
03:10In the 1980s, WWE was a hotbed for celebrity involvement.
03:15Perhaps none as lauded as Rocky III's Clever Lang, Mr. T.
03:19Here comes Mr. T, ladies and gentlemen.
03:22Everyone loved the A-Team megastar.
03:25Everyone, that is, except the hot rod.
03:27I know who you are, because your name's written on the back of the chair,
03:31and I'm assuming that that's there so you don't get lost.
03:34The rivalry between these two got so heated,
03:36a traditional wrestling match just wouldn't suffice.
03:39At WrestleMania II, Piper, a former amateur boxer,
03:42decided to challenge Mr. T at his own game,
03:45settling their differences in a boxing match.
03:51All right, round one.
03:54The best rivalries in WWE are the ones
03:58where you truly are invested in their hatred.
04:02Roddy, we get to throw jabs.
04:04I remember Roddy Piper throwing a jab, throwing a jab,
04:06and Piper always, he was always good with his hands.
04:09Piper, look at this.
04:11We was punching and whatnot, so this is what we're gonna do.
04:14I'm in the ring going, what if I just took him out?
04:19Come on.
04:20Oh, wait a minute.
04:22I knew this was coming.
04:24Clearly, it doesn't look like a real boxing match.
04:26It actually resembles a real fight.
04:29Piper is way back on top of it.
04:31Ladies and gentlemen,
04:33the decision as a result of a disqualification,
04:36Mr. T!
04:39I loved how Piper could really take anything
04:42and make it into gold.
04:48In 1996, Roddy Piper was caught in the crosshairs
04:51of the bizarre gold dust.
04:53I want a piece of you real bad, baby.
04:58The golden one became obsessed with the hot rod,
05:00but Piper was far from interested.
05:03Never one to back down from a fight,
05:05Piper accepted a challenge to a match
05:06between the two at WrestleMania 12.
05:08You want to fight you, jerk?
05:11Then I'll fight you, God!
05:13But this would be no ordinary one-on-one contest.
05:16It would take place outside the ring
05:18in a Hollywood backlot brawl.
05:25First shot was to the side window, man,
05:28and glass just went all over me, man.
05:31And here he comes,
05:32and he started just whooping my ass
05:35all over the place.
05:39I get in the car,
05:41and I started driving,
05:42and I'm looking at him,
05:44and I'm waiting for him to jump,
05:45so I kind of gassed it just a little bit.
05:48I just didn't move.
05:50Well, I was supposed to.
05:53His knees just went on the front of that car,
05:57and I was like,
05:58oh, my God!
05:59I just hit Roddy Piper.
06:00I just ran him over.
06:01This is totally out of hand!
06:02Roddy Piper was hit by a car!
06:05It took us from Hollywood to Anaheim.
06:09Here's Roddy Piper chasing gold dust.
06:12Back then, O.J. Simpson was hot.
06:14Everybody remembers where they were
06:16when the white Bronco was on the highway
06:18getting chased by the police.
06:21They're here!
06:22Whoa!
06:24It starts just stalking me,
06:26and I'm backing up,
06:27and I'm like,
06:27how did I end it in the arena?
06:29There's no role!
06:30Anything gone!
06:31This was a brawl.
06:33They went full out,
06:34and it only ends
06:36when someone has had enough
06:37and leaves.
06:38Somebody put it!
06:40It's no gold dust!
06:41My wife covers me up
06:42with my robe,
06:43and we run off,
06:44and that's how we end the match.
06:46I've never seen anything like this!
06:48It's all right!
06:48Piper, I believe this was his last WrestleMania.
06:51What better way
06:52to end your WrestleMania career
06:55than to have it be
06:56in such a unique way?
06:57I've never seen anything like this!
07:00In December 1984,
07:01at Madison Square Garden,
07:03pop icon Cindy Lauper
07:04presented Captain Lou Albano
07:06with a gold record
07:07for bringing the worlds of music
07:09and professional wrestling together.
07:10Captain Lou Albano!
07:13But it's never a party
07:14without the Piper, right?
07:19Cindy, brothers and sisters,
07:22I don't know what to say.
07:23I'm so grateful
07:24to receive this award.
07:26This is an honor to me!
07:28This is something special!
07:30It's really beautiful, Cindy!
07:33Happy last!
07:34Just a minute, brother!
07:36That night,
07:37nobody could have been ready
07:39for that moment.
07:40Please, please!
07:42I know, even though,
07:43even though it was me
07:45that set this up,
07:47and it was me that started it,
07:49I want to present you with this!
07:50The main thrusters there,
07:52they all hate me.
07:53This is just icing on the cake.
07:56Oh, look out!
07:59Captain Lou Albano, clover!
08:01I heard Roddy Piper once say
08:03that was the biggest moment
08:04of his career.
08:06Pure pandemonium.
08:08Look at Roddy Piper's
08:09just gone bananas!
08:11David Wubb trying to come to the rescue,
08:13but he's no match!
08:15Oh, he pile drives it
08:17right down into the canvas!
08:18Roddy Piper's gone crazy here!
08:21It caught me off guard.
08:23I didn't think any way
08:24Piper's gonna come out
08:25and ruin this moment.
08:26It's just insanity.
08:27Look out!
08:27The Humpsters hitting the ring!
08:31Cindy Lauper is down!
08:34I kicked Cindy Lauper.
08:36I said to myself,
08:38the end of her career
08:40could be the beginning of yours.
08:43Things like that
08:44made Roddy the ultimate rebel.
08:47What a despicable,
08:48disgraceful display
08:50on the part of Roddy Piper!
08:54In 1986,
08:56Roddy Roddy Piper
08:57took a brief absence
08:58from WWE
08:58and thus Piper's pit
09:00was no more.
09:01Upon his return,
09:02Piper was shocked
09:02to find his beloved pit
09:04replaced by the flower shop
09:05hosted by the adorable one,
09:07Adrian Adonis.
09:08I'm here
09:09to take my show back
09:11and the first thing
09:12that has to go
09:13are these damn flowers!
09:16Aided by Don Morocco
09:17and cowboy Bob Orton,
09:18Adonis brought the pain
09:19to the hot rod.
09:21But Roddy Piper
09:22is a man of pride.
09:23You think for one second
09:24hot rod will be humiliated?
09:27By someone who wears
09:28a dress look like
09:28someone shot the curtain
09:29to Daisy?
09:30With over 93,000
09:32screaming fans
09:33in attendance
09:33at WrestleMania 3,
09:34it would be billed
09:36as Roddy Piper's farewell
09:37to in-ring competition.
09:42And there ain't gonna be
09:44much holds in this one.
09:45This is gonna be
09:46a fighting gorilla.
09:47It's the retirement match
09:48at WrestleMania 3.
09:50Adrian Adonis.
09:51Eh, you know,
09:52I knew there's nothing
09:53he wouldn't do.
09:54He's so good
09:55and he's so tough.
09:57Roddy,
09:58just about out of this,
09:59doesn't have a clue
10:00where he is.
10:01They went at it
10:02pretty hard.
10:03They were amped
10:04and ready to go.
10:05I think they fed
10:06off each other, too.
10:08Oh!
10:08Both go over the top
10:09and down!
10:10It was so loud.
10:12They gave me
10:13probably the most
10:15memorable time
10:16in my career.
10:17Dragon,
10:17in the middle of the ring,
10:19Roddy Roddy
10:19with a sleeper.
10:20That's it!
10:21The adorable one
10:22has been put out
10:23in the picture,
10:24Roddy Roddy Piper!
10:26I win the match
10:27in WrestleMania 3
10:28and 93,000 people
10:30standing on their feet.
10:33It's the nicest
10:34compliment that you can get
10:35and only they
10:37could give me that
10:38and they did that night.
10:41For that,
10:41I'm ever grateful.
10:42I think that's the kindest
10:43thing that's ever
10:44happened to my career.
10:45Standing ovation,
10:4790,000 plus
10:48on their feet
10:49for the hot rod.
10:52Roddy Piper's
10:53Hall of Fame career
10:53had been built
10:54in the back
10:54of his rage-inducing
10:56persona,
10:56more so than his
10:57accolades in the ring.
10:58I was rowdy
10:59before rowdy was cool!
11:01But that's not to say
11:03his trophy case
11:04is empty.
11:05The 1992 Royal Rumble,
11:07Piper took on
11:08Intercontinental Champion
11:09the Mountie
11:09and emerged victorious,
11:11capturing gold
11:12for the first time
11:13in WWE.
11:14We have a new
11:15Intercontinental Champion!
11:17In front of 60,000
11:19streaming fans
11:20at WrestleMania VIII,
11:21the hot rod would
11:22defend his new title
11:23in a contest
11:24with Brett
11:25the Hitman Hart.
11:26I want to win back
11:27the Intercontinental belt.
11:28You got it.
11:29I'm gonna take it.
11:30When it came time
11:31for the two to be
11:32face-to-face,
11:33things got heated.
11:37Both guys will pull out
11:39all the stops.
11:40Here we go!
11:41Here we go!
11:42It was an important story
11:44for Roddy to tell.
11:45He was a mentor to me,
11:46and our person always
11:47changed when we have
11:48to fight each other.
11:49What a second shot!
11:51Brett showing paper,
11:53not only can I keep up
11:54with you,
11:54I can beat you.
11:56I think the Hitman
11:57hurt his shoulder!
12:00He's gone!
12:01A small package!
12:02He's gone!
12:03In the center!
12:04Almost had a great move!
12:06It was one of the best
12:07storytelling matches.
12:10It brought out
12:11the heel part of Roddy
12:12again a little bit.
12:14Oh, referee!
12:15John Conrad
12:16ready to go to there!
12:17He's got the bell!
12:18I was gonna hit him
12:19over the head
12:20with a bell and cover him.
12:21People were screaming,
12:22don't do it, don't do it.
12:23He's having second thoughts!
12:26Oh, what a second
12:27And they literally
12:28made him throw
12:29that all the way!
12:31Oh, look at that move!
12:32Off the turnbuckle!
12:34Here he goes!
12:35It was Roddy that really
12:37was the first big-name
12:38wrestler to put me over.
12:40History has been made
12:42here in the Hoosier Dome!
12:44It's really cool
12:45that Piper at that stage
12:46of his career
12:46could essentially
12:48steal the show
12:49because sometimes
12:49when you think of
12:50one thing that they're
12:51really good at,
12:52Piper, oh, he's a good talker,
12:53he's a good talker.
12:54You have to have matches
12:55like this every now and then
12:56just to let people know
12:57and remind them
12:58that you can do more.
13:03Roddy Piper was a lightning rod
13:05for stirring up anger,
13:06placing him right at home
13:07in the counterculture
13:08of the 1980s.
13:10I realize that your ears
13:12are all nasty and naughty.
13:14I know that your nose
13:15is smeared all over your face.
13:17Eventually, Piper's gift of gab
13:19granted him an audience
13:20with talk show host
13:21and fellow instigator
13:22Morton Downey Jr.
13:24at WrestleMania V.
13:29The fun has just begun.
13:32Back in the day
13:33when Piper had
13:33Morton Downey Jr.
13:34on the show,
13:35he was red hot back then.
13:37Why do you call yourself
13:38Morton Downey Jr.?
13:40That's the name
13:41your mama wanted to call me
13:42from the husband
13:43who reared me.
13:46Number one syndicated
13:48talk show
13:48at the time.
13:54Mr. Downey,
13:55I'd really appreciate it
13:57if you wouldn't do that again.
13:59Smoke?
14:00Yeah,
14:00especially blow it in my face.
14:02I said,
14:03don't blow smoke
14:03in my face.
14:05You blew smoke.
14:06All right,
14:07you jerk.
14:07Don't blow
14:08no more smoke
14:09in my face.
14:10He kept blowing smoke
14:11into Roddy's face
14:12and Roddy,
14:13of course,
14:13is who he is.
14:16You know,
14:16that's like the fourth time
14:17you've done that.
14:19Smoke all you want,
14:20but I'm going to show you
14:21what the wrestling business
14:22is really all about
14:22and Piper did.
14:25Give me that smoke,
14:26would you?
14:27Yeah!
14:30Fire extinguisher
14:31right in the kisser.
14:33I don't think
14:33Morton Downey
14:34ever been treated
14:35this way before.
14:36I was giving him
14:37a good beginning,
14:38a great ending,
14:38and he'll forgive
14:39a lot in between.
14:40I think the cigarette's
14:41out now.
14:43You fool with me,
14:44you'll find out
14:44that my fists are
14:45as fast as my lips,
14:46brother.
14:46Before making his way
14:48to WWE,
14:49Piper was embroiled
14:50in one of the most
14:50heated rivalries
14:51of his career
14:52with one Greg
14:53the Hammer Valentine,
14:54and he was known
14:55as the Hammer
14:56for good reason.
14:57If you can't take
14:58the pounding,
14:59get out of the ring.
15:00I feel that it's time
15:02to draw a line
15:03on Valentine.
15:04At Starrcade 1983,
15:05Valentine and Piper
15:06would settle
15:07their differences
15:08chained together
15:09in one of the most
15:10brutal face-offs
15:11you'll ever see,
15:12a ruthless
15:13dog-caller match.
15:17Both of these wrestlers
15:18will be chained
15:20to each other
15:20around the neck,
15:21no disqualification,
15:23to a finish.
15:25The meanest,
15:26nastiest,
15:27most brutal match
15:29you can think of.
15:30I can't imagine
15:31two men
15:31linked together
15:32like this
15:33in Mortal Kombat.
15:35They wanted to go out
15:36there and steal it,
15:36and they did.
15:38The match cannot be stopped,
15:39there's gotta be a winner.
15:40Roddy was a great wrestler,
15:42but he was never really
15:43solid and stiff
15:44like I was.
15:45But that night,
15:46he was.
15:49Roddy Piper right here
15:50could be a real danger,
15:52fan.
15:53That year of his
15:54very definitely
15:55badly damaged
15:55at this point.
15:56Broke the eardrum.
15:58My ear is bleeding
15:59from here
16:00all the way down
16:01to my leg.
16:02Catch us up
16:02with a chain once again
16:03and again,
16:04and Valentine
16:05goes face forward.
16:06They wanted to make sure
16:07that the fans knew
16:08that they were
16:09the real deal.
16:10You could see
16:10how brutal
16:11that match was.
16:16He got the pick.
16:17That's what makes
16:18a great match.
16:20You never quit.
16:21You never give up.
16:23Paddy Piper did it.
16:25Roddy Piper did it.
16:26He got the pick.
16:28Come on.
16:31From its inception,
16:32Piper's pit
16:33was the place to be
16:34for any WWE superstar
16:36wanting to speak
16:36their mind.
16:37What an idiot.
16:38Are you kidding me?
16:40Over the years,
16:41the show created
16:41a wealth of
16:42unforgettable segments,
16:43but are perhaps
16:44none more famous
16:45than the 1984
16:46appearance of
16:47Superfly Jimmy Snuka.
16:51This guy here
16:52comes, I don't know,
16:53maybe comes
16:53sniveling to the people,
16:55comes and cries.
16:56Roddy Piper
16:57didn't give me
16:58a chance to say
16:59nothing on the pit.
17:00One of the most
17:01iconic moments
17:02in WWE history
17:04was the Piper's pit
17:06with Jimmy Snuka.
17:08I'll tell you what,
17:09man, here you go.
17:10Take the little
17:11microphone.
17:12There you go.
17:13Put it in the
17:13little greasy pot.
17:15I get this bag
17:16from Hanks
17:17with pineapple.
17:18Watch your feel
17:19at home.
17:20Watch your feel
17:20like the Fiji on it.
17:22Bananas.
17:23You want a banana?
17:24Have a banana.
17:24Coconut's in the head.
17:27More coconut.
17:28I'm drawing
17:29coconut's.
17:30He says,
17:30are you trying
17:31to disrespect me,
17:32brother?
17:34Am I making fun
17:35of you?
17:36No, no, no,
17:37no, no, no.
17:39No, sir.
17:40No, sir.
17:40No, sir.
17:41What?
17:46He was that guy
17:47and he loved
17:49to be despised.
17:51He was
17:52the perfect heel.
17:55With Rowdy Roddy Piper,
17:57you never knew
17:57what he was going
17:58to do.
17:58This time,
17:59Rowdy Roddy Piper
18:00created a moment
18:01that only Rowdy Roddy
18:03Piper can create.
18:07It's now time
18:08for our number
18:09one moment
18:09and it's one
18:10that propelled
18:11WWE into the
18:12mainstream media
18:13stratosphere.
18:14WWE had found
18:16its very own
18:16Superman
18:17in the immortal
18:17Hulk Hogan.
18:18Train.
18:19Say your prayers.
18:21Eat your vitamins
18:22and believe
18:22in yourself,
18:23brother.
18:24But what is Superman
18:25without his greatest foe?
18:26And who better
18:27to step into that role
18:28than the white pot
18:29instigator,
18:31Rowdy Roddy Piper?
18:32All of a sudden,
18:33this Hulkamania
18:34is going wild
18:35all over the place
18:36and he's becoming
18:37a legend.
18:37Their bitter rivalry
18:38would be a fixture
18:39of pop culture.
18:41The aptly named
18:42War to Settle the Score,
18:44airing exclusively
18:44on MTV.
18:48Tonight,
18:49on MTV.
18:50What really was
18:52the match
18:52that captured
18:54the tension
18:55was the war
18:56to settle the score.
18:57It was just like
18:59throwing big tanks
19:00of gas on the fire.
19:01We knew
19:02once MTV got on board
19:04this thing was
19:04going to be a monster.
19:07We have done
19:08action.
19:09We're on it!
19:10Whenever I went in there
19:11against Piper,
19:13it was always a war.
19:14Oh,
19:15and a shootout,
19:15ladies and gentlemen.
19:18Eventually,
19:18during the match,
19:21all hell
19:22breaks loose.
19:23Look out!
19:24On there!
19:24Oh, come on.
19:25Oh, please!
19:26Look out!
19:27Oh!
19:28You've got to be kidding me!
19:30Here comes
19:30Mr. K,
19:31ladies and gentlemen!
19:32There's no villain
19:33better than
19:34the hot rod,
19:35Roddy Piper.
19:36He's the perfect guy
19:37to reach out
19:38to that pop culture,
19:40that MTV crowd,
19:41and draw them
19:41into the wrestling world.
19:43We've got a madhouse here.
19:44Liam, come back now!
19:45Come on!
19:46Security holding
19:46everyone back!
19:47If you ain't got
19:48enough guts
19:48to fight me
19:49one-on-one, mister,
19:50then take a hike
19:51and leave the title
19:52with me!
19:56Piper and Hogan's
19:57encounter set
19:58the wrestling world
19:59ablaze,
19:59leaving audiences
20:00everywhere wanting more.
20:02And setting the stage
20:03for the granddaddy
20:04of them all,
20:05the very first
20:06Wrestlemania.
20:07The often-imitated,
20:08never-duplicated
20:09Roddy Piper
20:10was certainly a force
20:11to be reckoned with
20:12in WWE.
20:13Thriving on the pure
20:14emotions he generated
20:16in audiences,
20:17Piper reached heights
20:18that some could only
20:18dream of.
20:19Well, that'll do it
20:20for this edition
20:21of WWE's Greatest Moments.
20:23I hope you've enjoyed
20:24this look back
20:24at the incredible career
20:26of one of the most
20:26appealing antagonists
20:28in professional wrestling
20:29history,
20:30Rowdy.
20:30Roddy Piper.
20:34Roddy Piper!
20:37Tremendous newcomer here
20:38to the World Wrestling
20:39Federation making
20:40his debut.
20:42I never heard of it.
20:43Oh, take a look!
20:44Holy cow!
20:45There's nothing like
20:46a first impression
20:47to go from a nobody
20:48to a somebody
20:49in an instant.
20:50What a debut
20:51for Bill Goldberg!
20:53From a unique presentation.
20:54This is the greatest day
20:56that professional wrestling
20:57has ever seen.
20:59to a startling entrance.
21:00Wait a minute!
21:01My God, King!
21:02My God!
21:03That's Paul White!
21:05To a harrowing display
21:06of power.
21:08Oh, my God!
21:08He just ripped the door
21:10off its hinges!
21:11Today, we look back
21:12at some of the most
21:12dazzling debuts
21:13of the 1990s.
21:15Unbelievable!
21:17This is WWE's
21:19Greatest Moments.
21:22He's your son of a man!
21:24Oh, my God!
21:25What the hell are you doing?
21:28Absolutely!
21:28Unbelievable!
21:30Oh, my baby!
21:31I'm a first real!
21:38Welcome, everyone,
21:39to WWE's Greatest Moments.
21:41I'm Michael Cole.
21:42And on this edition,
21:43we're taking a look back
21:44at the most spectacular
21:45debuts of the 1990s.
21:48Look at that!
21:49Who is he?
21:50There was no decade
21:51more distinctive
21:51as the 90s ushered in
21:53some of the most celebrated
21:54icons WWE has ever seen.
21:58And our first moment
21:59is no exception.
22:01The grandson of Peter Maivia,
22:03the son of Rocky Johnson.
22:05Rocky Maivia was
22:06Sports Entertainment's
22:07first-ever third-generation
22:08superstar.
22:09This guy could be
22:11the standard bearer
22:12for years to come.
22:13With such a deep
22:14wrestling pedigree,
22:15Maivia had big shoes
22:17to fill in his debut
22:18at the 1996 Survivor Series,
22:20taking place at
22:21Madison Square Garden.
22:22I just want to give
22:23110% effort,
22:24and I don't want to
22:24let my teammates down,
22:25and hopefully I can do
22:27something tonight
22:27that would really
22:28make my family proud.
22:33Rocky Maivia!
22:34There's going to be
22:35the man right there.
22:36That's Blue Chipper
22:37right there.
22:38When you think about
22:39debuts,
22:40there are only a few
22:41that you really think
22:42about being, like,
22:43a huge deal
22:44when it happened.
22:45Rocky Maivia,
22:46it stood out.
22:48It jumped off the page.
22:50He's 6'5",
22:51275.
22:52There's Rocky Maivia!
22:54Good-looking kid.
22:56Good physique.
22:57Athletic.
22:59That's now the rookie.
23:00Rocky Maivia
23:01is left with two men
23:03on one.
23:04Flying body pass.
23:05He got it.
23:07Survivor Series
23:08was more than just an event.
23:09It was a hell of
23:11a learning experience.
23:12And, yeah!
23:15One, two...
23:16I can't!
23:17Rocky!
23:18And, on top of that,
23:20I win the whole thing.
23:26The Nature Boy,
23:27Ric Flair,
23:28had spent nearly
23:28two decades
23:29wrestling all over
23:30the world
23:30for various promotions,
23:31becoming one of
23:32the biggest names
23:33in professional wrestling.
23:35You see,
23:35I wrestle the top guys!
23:37Night in and night out!
23:39In 1991,
23:40Ric Flair was an
23:41eight-time and current,
23:42that's right,
23:42current,
23:44WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
23:45There is only one
23:49World Heavyweight Champion.
23:51A dispute with the company
23:52brought the Nature Boy
23:53to WWE
23:54and led to one of the most
23:56controversial debuts
23:57ever.
24:00I have here
24:01the belt that belongs
24:03to the greatest
24:04World Heavyweight Champion
24:05in the history of wrestling,
24:07the real World Champion,
24:08Ric Flair.
24:09I'm going to talk to Vince
24:10to the four and I said,
24:11I will come
24:12if you want me.
24:13He said,
24:14I don't believe you.
24:15I said,
24:15I got the belt.
24:16He said,
24:17send it and I'll believe you.
24:18I overrated it to him.
24:20The man that has made
24:22everyone in the World Wrestling
24:25Federation shake.
24:26The audience
24:28for Primetime at that time,
24:30which was cable
24:30on USA Network,
24:31was larger
24:32than our syndicated
24:34audiences,
24:34so we did it
24:35to the largest audience first.
24:36A REAL WORLD Champion,
24:38Ric Flair.
24:43To people that were
24:45wrestling fans,
24:46not just like
24:47WWE fans,
24:50it was huge.
24:52A REAL WORLD
24:54heavyweight champion
24:55was going to be coming
24:58to the WWF.
25:01Well, lo and behold,
25:02did you think
25:03it wasn't going to happen?
25:04That was really huge.
25:05That could be one
25:07of about three moments
25:08of my career.
25:09I'm Ric Flair
25:10and I'm the real
25:11world champion.
25:15In 1996,
25:17American Kurt Angle
25:18shocked the world
25:19when he won
25:19the Olympic gold medal
25:20as a freestyle wrestler.
25:22Angle then became
25:23the most sought-after athlete
25:25in professional wrestling.
25:27Finally,
25:27three years later,
25:28in 1999,
25:29WWE signed
25:30the most coveted
25:31athlete in the nation.
25:32I do respect
25:34the athletic ability
25:35of the superstars
25:35in the WWF.
25:37And I'm sure
25:37some of them
25:38could have competed
25:38on the Olympic level.
25:40But I believe
25:40you have to have
25:41a little extra something
25:42to win the Olympic gold.
25:44Angle would make
25:44his official in-ring
25:45debut at Survivor Series
25:47where he'd teach us
25:48all a little lesson
25:49about respect.
25:53making his world
25:54wrestling federation
25:56debut.
25:57The most celebrated
25:58real athlete
25:59in WWF history,
26:03Kurt Angle.
26:06He knows championships.
26:08He knows Olympics.
26:09Being a legitimate
26:11Olympic gold medalist,
26:12you can really do anything.
26:14I don't believe
26:15when I started
26:16that WWE was looking
26:17for Kurt Angle
26:18to have a huge connection
26:20with the fans.
26:22Uh-oh, wow!
26:23Nice waist-lock
26:24takedown by Kurt Angle.
26:26I think they were thinking
26:27that I was going to be
26:28more of a wrestler
26:29that would get in the ring
26:31and have some great matches.
26:32This is a different style
26:34of WWF competition
26:36than we're used to seeing,
26:37King, quite frankly.
26:39They're showing you
26:40that this guy can do
26:41the wrestling aspect of it.
26:43A lot of these people,
26:44they're probably not exactly
26:45with this style of wrestling.
26:47that Kurt Angle does.
26:49This was a time where
26:50breaking the rules was cool.
26:52Me being a babyface gold medalist,
26:55I said, there's no way
26:56in hell they're going to boo me.
26:58You do not boo Olympic gold medals.
27:00I'm the best in the world.
27:03I came here for you.
27:06You do not boo me.
27:08It was the right time
27:10to initiate
27:11what would be perhaps
27:13the top heel
27:13in the business eventually.
27:15Angle with a modified slam
27:17will fall away.
27:18Oh, beautiful!
27:20You do not boo
27:21an Olympic gold medalist.
27:22You have respect
27:23for an Olympic gold medalist.
27:25There is no better
27:26storytelling device
27:27in all of professional wrestling
27:28than that of the vignette.
27:30Oh, dust.
27:32A vignette is a video segment
27:34used to build excitement
27:35outside of the ring,
27:37showcasing a wrestler's
27:38persona and background.
27:40Oh!
27:41Throughout the 1990s,
27:42nobody's vignettes
27:43were as dark,
27:44chilling,
27:45or mysterious
27:46than the character
27:47known as Mankind.
27:49Holy Mankind!
27:51Could be this evil!
27:53The WWE Universe
27:55had never seen
27:55a superstar as eerie
27:56and complex
27:57as the deranged one.
27:59Coming down the aisle,
28:02Mankind!
28:04The impact
28:04of his first night
28:05on Raw
28:06would send shockwaves
28:07throughout WWE.
28:12Look at this!
28:13The crushing of heart
28:14might hit that
28:14bigger battery!
28:16Bob Holly!
28:16Mankind was introduced
28:18to the WWE Universe.
28:20I had Bob Holly in the ring
28:22and Bob was a really
28:23strong wrestler.
28:29He's got his fingers
28:31jammed down his...
28:33That is...
28:34That is esophagus!
28:36Mankind!
28:39Incapacitating him
28:39with the mandible claw,
28:40it was a big deal,
28:41but not as big a deal
28:43as coming out
28:44later in the show.
28:49The Undertaker character,
28:51it was so strong,
28:54and they'd line him up
28:55and I went through him.
28:56But this guy's willing
28:57to hurt himself
28:58just to hurt you
28:59a little bit.
29:01Watch out!
29:01Down below!
29:02Watch out!
29:03Oh my God!
29:04Then Mankind puts
29:06the claw on me.
29:08It definitely made
29:09an impression
29:09because it was something
29:10that people really
29:11hadn't seen a lot.
29:13The Undertaker!
29:14Big man's hand
29:15looks like Mankind!
29:16To vanquish Bob Holly
29:18and then put The Undertaker
29:20on his back
29:21with the mandible claw,
29:22that was a big night.
29:24We knew he'd be deranged,
29:26but not this second!
29:30The 1990s brought us
29:32heartbreakers,
29:33rattlesnakes,
29:34and even Amazons.
29:35But there was only
29:36one sports entertainer
29:38who brought
29:38the total package.
29:39This is the total package,
29:42Lex Luger!
29:44Nobody had a physique
29:45quite like Lex Luger.
29:47At the 1993 Royal Rumble,
29:49Silver Tongued
29:50Hall of Famer,
29:51Bobby the Brain Hanen
29:52would introduce
29:53the WWE Universe
29:54to the Narcissist.
29:59The greatest
30:00specimen walking on Earth!
30:02It's an honor
30:04to introduce
30:05and to unveil
30:08Narcissist
30:09Lex Luger!
30:12Oh, my actual debut
30:13at the Royal Rumble,
30:15it was nerve-wracking,
30:16but at the same time,
30:16it was exhilarating.
30:19Oh, yeah!
30:20Look at that!
30:22Look at that!
30:23You have a reason
30:24to love yourself!
30:25You have a reason!
30:27You are truly
30:28the Narcissist!
30:29Lex never met
30:30a mirror he didn't like
30:31and had a very
30:32narcissistic personality.
30:35I didn't even know
30:36what the hell
30:36a narcissist was
30:38until we met
30:39Lex Luger.
30:39Everybody here
30:40wishes
30:41that he looked like
30:42Lex Luger!
30:43He was full of himself
30:44and he had
30:45every right to be.
30:46He was the total package.
30:48I truly am
30:51incredible!
30:53This is
30:55history
30:55in the making!
30:57That whole
30:58I'm perfect
30:59and in love
31:00with myself,
31:01I guess you asked
31:01a lot of the rushes
31:02back then,
31:02but my personality
31:03back then pretty well.
31:05You have been
31:05part of history!
31:06This is what
31:07it's all about!
31:08A narcissist
31:10Lex Luger!
31:15The 1990s
31:16brought us
31:16one of the most
31:17heated rivalries
31:18in all of sports
31:19entertainment.
31:20Stone Cold
31:21Steve Austin
31:22and the boss
31:23Mr. McMahon.
31:24You can kiss my
31:26a**!
31:30But it was
31:31at St. Valentine's Day
31:32Massacre
31:33in 1999
31:34when they clashed
31:35inside a dreaded
31:36steel cage
31:36that would truly
31:38remain unforgettable.
31:39The boss
31:40would do just
31:41about anything
31:42to win
31:42including
31:43enlisting the help
31:44of a giant.
31:49Mr. McMahon
31:50has insane hatred
31:51for Stone Cold.
31:52Stone Cold
31:53versus Mr. McMahon
31:55was the best
31:56of all time.
31:57Into the steel cage!
31:59Oh my God!
32:00Don't worry,
32:01this ain't over yet!
32:02Here we go now!
32:03He's gotta be
32:0420 feet off the front!
32:05No!
32:07No!
32:07Mr. McMahon!
32:09How much more
32:10can the boss
32:10take King?
32:11You couldn't
32:12possibly get
32:13any more eyeballs
32:15on that ring
32:16than right then.
32:18Oh no!
32:20No!
32:20Stunner!
32:21Stunner!
32:22He may be dead!
32:24Wait a minute!
32:25My God!
32:26King!
32:26My God!
32:27That's Paul White!
32:29When I came in
32:30in 99,
32:31I gave Stone Cold
32:32Steve Austin
32:33the run for his money.
32:35King!
32:36He's huge!
32:37This guy's gotta be
32:37over 7 feet tall!
32:39Big Show came
32:40straight up like
32:40from hell.
32:42You knew the boss
32:43had to have
32:44something up his sleeve!
32:45This is the largest
32:47athlete in the world
32:49now a part
32:50of world wrestling
32:51entertainment.
32:55Look at that!
32:56He's colossal!
33:01Money is power!
33:03Sentiment that
33:04the million dollar
33:04man Ted DiBiase
33:06had been preaching
33:06his entire
33:07charmed life.
33:08Money isn't
33:09everything!
33:10It's the only thing!
33:11In 1990
33:12when it came time
33:13for the million dollar
33:14man to find a tag team
33:15partner at Survivor Series
33:16he went all out
33:17purchased one of
33:18the biggest
33:19strongest
33:19and otherworldly
33:21superstars
33:21WWE had ever seen.
33:25We got
33:26an ace up our sleeve!
33:28he's the mystery
33:29partner
33:29and I promise
33:30this to be a big
33:31very big
33:32surprise!
33:33Survivor Series
33:341990
33:35nobody knew
33:37what to expect.
33:39I will introduce
33:40to you now
33:40my mystery partner
33:42from Death Valley
33:43I give you
33:45The Undertaker!
33:47The Undertaker!
33:49The mystery partner
33:50is now revealed!
33:51I never heard of it!
33:52Oh!
33:52Holy cow!
33:55Look at the size
33:57of that ham hock!
33:59His entrance
34:00watching that
34:01from the ring
34:01is just impressive
34:03especially the first time.
34:05320 pounds
34:07looks to be
34:076'9", 6'10",
34:09somewhere in that
34:10neighborhood, Rod!
34:12Those slow
34:13methodical movements
34:15the composure
34:16and everything
34:17was by design
34:18when he made
34:19his debut
34:20was very powerful.
34:22The hardest thing
34:23to do
34:23is to walk
34:24that slow
34:25and be that
34:26ominous character
34:27when on the inside
34:28man I am just
34:29bouncing off
34:30my internal walls.
34:32The hearts
34:33and roads
34:35and Coco
34:35gotta be just
34:36trying to figure
34:37what's going on here!
34:39It was a different
34:41vibe
34:41hit the arena
34:42as soon as
34:43that came out.
34:44You knew
34:45that it was
34:45gonna have
34:46a major impact
34:46in WWE.
34:48How on earth
34:49are you gonna
34:50stop this guy?
34:54In 1999
34:55the global public
34:56grew worrisome
34:57with the Y2K bug
34:59a feared computer glitch
35:01that had the potential
35:02to crash
35:02all processing systems
35:04when the calendar
35:04changed to the
35:05new millennium.
35:06So when a mysterious
35:08countdown clock
35:08began appearing
35:09throughout WWE
35:10programming
35:11it sparked wild
35:13speculation
35:13throughout the world
35:14of sports entertainment.
35:16What was it
35:17counting down to?
35:18And what would
35:19happen when the clock
35:20finally hit zero?
35:22It's counting down.
35:23Tonight
35:23we're finally gonna
35:24unravel the mystery.
35:26We're gonna find out
35:27the significance
35:27of the new
35:29millennium clock.
35:32Tonight
35:33in front of all
35:33the Rocks fans
35:34you will go
35:35a one
35:36on one
35:37with a great one!
35:39The Rock
35:40is in the ring.
35:42The Big Ten
35:42count comes on.
35:44Two
35:44one
35:45the lights
35:46go out.
35:57Break the wood
35:58break down the walls
36:01foot down
36:02and jump down
36:02the rock
36:03and watch the
36:04rock
36:04baby you know
36:05you're shooting
36:06light
36:07spotlight
36:08arms out
36:09and Chicago
36:11loses it.
36:13People go crazy.
36:15I went crazy.
36:16I remember
36:16watching it at home.
36:23I was standing
36:25in a post office
36:26had this sign
36:27that said
36:27countdown to
36:28the new millennium.
36:29Be a great way
36:30for me to come
36:30in the WWE.
36:31Chris Jericho
36:32has come
36:33to save
36:34the WWF!
36:37I crafted it
36:38so beautifully.
36:41Has there been
36:41a better debut?
36:43I hate to sound
36:43egotistical
36:44but I don't think so.
36:45And now that
36:46the Y2J
36:48problem is here.
36:49This company
36:50will never
36:52ever
36:53be the same
36:54again.
36:58WWE's greatest
36:59hero throughout
37:00the 1980s
37:01was none other
37:01than the immortal
37:02one
37:03Hulk Hogan.
37:04Train!
37:05Say your prayers!
37:06Eat your vitamins!
37:07And believe in
37:08yourself, brother!
37:09In 1994
37:10the Hulkster
37:11decided to leave
37:12WWE
37:12and join
37:13rival promotion
37:14WCW.
37:15Red and
37:16Yellow
37:16still ran
37:17through the
37:17veins of
37:18millions of
37:18Hulkamaniacs
37:19around the
37:20globe.
37:20And what
37:21better way
37:21to welcome
37:22in wrestling
37:22royalty
37:23than with
37:24a parade
37:24fit for a
37:26king?
37:29Fans all
37:30over the world
37:30thousands of
37:32them here at
37:32Disney MGM
37:33studios as
37:34Hulk Hogan
37:35makes his
37:36way for the
37:36official signing
37:37of his contract
37:38with WCW.
37:39When I moved
37:41our syndicated
37:42shows to the
37:42Disney MGM
37:43lot, we had
37:44access to
37:45the back
37:46lot.
37:46We knew
37:47that bringing
37:47Hulk Hogan
37:48we wanted
37:48it to feel
37:49as big and
37:50as important
37:50as we possibly
37:51could.
37:51So we came
37:52up with the
37:52idea of
37:53staging a
37:54parade.
37:55This is the
37:56greatest day
37:57that professional
37:57wrestling has
37:59ever seen.
37:59We were able
38:00to put it
38:00together with
38:00Disney and
38:01make it look
38:01good.
38:02All those
38:02people that
38:03were there
38:03they weren't
38:03hired extras
38:04or anything
38:04else.
38:04they were
38:05part guests.
38:06Welcome
38:07Hulk Hogan!
38:11I didn't know
38:12how powerful
38:12Hulkamania was
38:13at the time.
38:14It made
38:14everybody look
38:15and not look
38:16away.
38:16So you could
38:17feel people
38:17were interested
38:18in what we
38:18were going
38:19to do.
38:20Well you
38:20know something
38:20mean Gene
38:21I told you
38:22Hulkamania
38:23was going
38:23to run
38:23wild in the
38:24WCW
38:25brother.
38:26For Hulk
38:26to make
38:27that move
38:27and leave
38:28WWE and
38:29come to
38:30WCW
38:30was one
38:32hell of a
38:32big statement
38:33and we
38:34wanted to
38:34squeeze
38:35every ounce
38:36of energy
38:37that we
38:37possibly could
38:38out of it
38:38and make
38:39it feel
38:39like a
38:40bigger deal
38:40than it
38:40already was.
38:41And what
38:42you gonna
38:42do
38:42mean Gene
38:43when Hulkamaniacs
38:44run wild
38:45on the
38:45WCW
38:46brother?
38:48It's now
38:48time for
38:49our number
38:49one moment
38:50and it's
38:51one that
38:51the WWE
38:52universe
38:52will never
38:53forget.
38:54There was
38:54no force
38:55in all
38:55of WWE
38:56quite like
38:57The Undertaker.
38:58The dead
38:59man overpowered
39:00his opponents
39:00with supernatural
39:01strength
39:02and struck
39:02fear into
39:03all with
39:04an intimidated
39:04exposition.
39:06But did
39:06you know
39:07that The Undertaker
39:08had a brother?
39:09The Phenom's
39:10former manager
39:11Paul Bearer
39:12revealed to him
39:13that his long
39:14lost sibling
39:14was coming
39:15to attack him.
39:16He is a
39:17live Undertaker!
39:19The only
39:20questions left
39:21unanswered
39:22were when
39:22and how.
39:27We're just
39:27about ready
39:28for hell
39:29in the cell!
39:30So Bad
39:31Blood was
39:31going to be
39:32the blow-off
39:33match between
39:34Shawn and I.
39:36The cell
39:37itself just
39:38came again
39:39as an idea
39:40of wanting
39:40to have
39:40something bigger
39:41than just
39:41a regular
39:42cage match.
39:43This is truly
39:43hell in a cell
39:45for Shawn Michaels!
39:46Oh and by the way
39:47the blow-off
39:48was the introduction
39:49of Undertaker's
39:50brother.
39:51It's all over!
39:52Now we'll come
39:53to Tombstone!
39:55No.
39:58Oh my God!
40:00Wait a minute!
40:00It's Paul Bearer!
40:02That's gotta be
40:03that's gotta be
40:04Kane!
40:05That whole match
40:06was actually
40:07built around
40:07my debut.
40:09Oh my God!
40:10He just ripped
40:11the door off
40:12its hinges!
40:13You can see
40:14it in my eyes
40:14like holy crap.
40:17This is my brother
40:18that I thought
40:19was dead.
40:20The Undertaker
40:22looking into
40:23the air!
40:23of that giant
40:25who stands
40:26in front of him!
40:27Probably one of
40:27the coolest
40:28debuts I've seen.
40:30Undertaker
40:30set up
40:31for the tombstone!
40:32Driven down
40:33to the canvas!
40:34It was almost
40:35like wow
40:36you just hit
40:37a home run
40:37in the World Series.
40:39Paul Bearer
40:40said that Kane
40:40was alive
40:41and now we
40:42know he is!
40:45It just had
40:46to be Kane!
40:46That's gotta be Kane!
40:48This countdown
40:49just goes to show
40:50you never know
40:51who might walk
40:51out on that stage
40:52at any given
40:53moment
40:54and make
40:54professional
40:55wrestling history.
40:56Well that'll do it
40:57for this edition
40:57of WWE's
40:59Greatest Moments.
41:00I hope you've
41:00enjoyed this look
41:01back at some
41:02of the biggest
41:02debuts from one
41:03of the most
41:03exciting times
41:04in professional
41:05wrestling
41:06the 1990s.
