US has denied Ir$n's claim that two missiles struck a US warship in the Strait of Hormuz — as tensions spike over Trump's "Project Freedom" to free stranded commercial ships.
Ir@n's semi-official Fars news agency reported that a US warship was struck and forced to turn back while sailing near Jask island. But US Central Command (Centcom) shot back on X: "No U.S. Navy ships have been struck."
What is Project Freedom? Trump announced the US would guide stranded commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday morning. He called it a "Humanitarian Gesture" for "Neutral and Innocent" countries not involved in the war.
Ir/\n had warned that "Any foreign armed forces, especially the aggressive US army, will be attacked" if they approach the strait.
What's happening on the water? Two US-flagged merchant vessels have already crossed through the strait, with US Navy destroyers operating in the Gulf. Meanwhile, a cargo ship near the strait reported being attacked by multiple small aircraft — the first reported attack in the area since April 22. Ir-n denied it, saying the ship was stopped for a documents check.
Oil prices jumped over 5% on Monday to $113.65 a barrel after Ir[]n's claim.
Also in the region: The US transferred 22 crew members from the captured Ir+ni_n ship M/V Touska to Pakistan for repatriation.
Analysts warn that high oil prices aren't sustainable long-term. As one put it: "Geopolitical risk is pushing oil higher... but underlying growth is clearly softening." 🛢️🇺🇸🇮🇷
