00:24camper van there no matter what people say that you can't get away from the
00:28main purpose of converting a van like this is it doubled up as everyday
00:33transport so 1967 triumph there look at that 650 try and what a body machine as
00:40well he actually went to buy a greenhouse came back with the greenhouse stacked in
00:45the pickup and this this motorcycle beside the greenhouse and that's that's the
00:49type of thing he used to do he just used to sniff them out they're not
00:52unbelievable Rayleigh the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55
01:03the joys of an auction most people will go to us out with something in mind but come
01:07away with something different the fun is the chase you just don't know what's on
01:14the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a
01:17family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a car
01:24because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams right here we go
01:45it's another day of comings and goings and with the workers hard at it Derek's found the perfect
01:52excuse to escape tempting him today a 60 year old Alvis TE 21 be perfectly frank I've always wanted
02:02one they're like an upmarket mark 2 Jag if you like or you know maybe a slightly down market or
02:09left desirable Aston Martin they're that in that ilk

02:23warm over in
02:25Staffordshire Martin anchor has returned to his salesman's roots when you're showing somebody
02:31around a motor car they always want to go to the driver's door they want to sit in the car
02:35you keep
02:36them away from that as long as possible Martin sold cars for 60 years now he's doing a job on
02:42his 1965 Alvis beautifully designed vehicle I have added since I've owned the car the chrome wire wheels
02:50it had the steel wire wheels but I think the chrome wire wheels give it a little bit more character
02:55the
02:57car is fitted with a sunshine roof we have two very nice wide easy access doors presenting a very smart
03:10interior Duke of Edinburgh owned an Alvis TE convertible come on Alfie he thinks he's going out
03:18for the day nice twin exhaust pipes but the back of the round of car again very stylish this is
03:26in my
03:26opinion anyway I'm biased I suppose we're now getting to the exciting part you've shown the
03:33person the benefits of the motor car as you've taken the round of the styling of the car and the
03:37reasons why things are done um they are now very anxious to get into the driving seat so you've now
03:45got that person basically in your hand you can control what they want to do so it's like having
03:53Derek here we've got a beautiful Walnut dashboard um all the instruments there you've got rev counter
04:03speedometer oil pressure gauge water temperature gauge fuel gauge etc all the necessary equipment you
04:09need it's subtle stylish I recommend you go and buy one this is the ideal car for you have you
04:17bought your
04:17checkbook it'll be a wrench for Martin to sell the car which was left in by his late stepfather Douglas
04:31her name is the Duchess Douglas always described always it's all take the Duchess out today so you
04:39know it is a member of the family but time has to come when it's got to go sadly and
04:47of course any
04:48prospective buyer would like to see the engine
04:53got rid of all the pot it releases how long you had it for 30 bloody years
05:05I'm just sat in the seat put my hands straight on it
05:17was it worth the way of course because you never have to open the bonnet analysis you're such a
05:24wonderful reliable car so that's the reason why oh well there we are beautiful three litre
05:32six-cylinder Alvis engine lovely straight 130 odd brake horse engine twin s shoe carburettors all the
05:42equipment that you require for a very very nice motor car with four-wheeled don't knock disc brakes
05:48we'll drive quickly we'll stop quickly sadly I shed a few tears talking to her in the workshops but she's
05:59going to have to go somebody else will enjoy that motor car and continue with it and because it is
06:06a
06:06car to be proud of it knows British engineering at the best got back hang on a minute check front
06:22of the
06:30lorry it looks like Charlie's getting the hang of this collection lock
06:35all right all right I'm going on hold on hold on holds tights toy look at that that's best bit
06:42that look at that bumpers safer than cara I remember when his granddad used to come in he used to
06:48run
06:48out see how many clicks he could get to be better tight the tight the tight long he's picked up
06:55a 1963
06:56Mark one Ford Cortina Deluxe that's been stored in a Melton Mowbray lockup for a decade hey she's a
07:04Level old car, Charlie.
07:06I think it's a straight, genuine old thing.
07:09A two-door cortene, obviously, you don't see them on every street corner, do you?
07:13So I think it's kept really, really well.
07:16Obviously, there's bits around it, but you can see where it's being damp, look, cross-bottom at the door and
07:20that.
07:21To be fair, I think he's caught it about at the right time.
07:23If it'd have been in there another ten years, then it'd maybe be a different story, wouldn't it?
07:28Gives a shove.
07:34That's it. That'll do.
07:45Oh, me and Amy are on top of the job at bike collections now, aren't we?
07:48Yeah.
07:48Yeah, in and out. Don't even know where we've been.
07:51It's another beautiful day in Yorkshire.
07:54But that won't deter Matthewson's top motorcycle sibling collection team.
08:00We are going to Bishop Auckland for quite a varied collection of bikes, I'm led to believe.
08:06AJFC, so a nice variant of different motorbikes, that should be good.
08:10So, yeah, that should be a good one.
08:11Hopefully.
08:12As long as Amy keeps me right on the maps.
08:15While the Matthewsons risk a soaking...
08:18See you soon.
08:19See you later.
08:2060 miles away in County Durham, the weather's taken a turn for the better.
08:25And the remnants of a 20-strong motorbike collection are waiting to be picked up.
08:30It's part of his collections that some of the motorbikes have already been sold.
08:34And this is... We have five left, four here, and one up in his motorbike shed.
08:41Nigel Henderson is moving on the last of his dad's bikes and cars.
08:46Alan died three years ago, and by all accounts, loved a bargain.
08:54So, that particular one, I can remember one day he went to buy a seat for it,
09:01and came back with two cars and no seat.
09:04That's the sort of thing he would do.
09:08Another time he went to get the seat for it and came back with another two motorbikes.
09:13So, everything was a project.
09:15So, in the summer months, he used to mess on with his cars and his vintage pick-up.
09:21And in the winter months, he would lock himself away in his motorbike shed
09:26and do his motorbikes up.
09:28So, everything was an ongoing project, some taken absolutely years.
09:33Amongst the hall, there's a Royal Enfield in bits,
09:36a pair of Triumphs and a 1960 AJS 250.
09:41He actually went to buy a greenhouse.
09:43Came back with the greenhouse, stacked in the pickup,
09:46and this motorcycle beside the greenhouse.
09:49And that's the type of thing he used to do.
09:51He just used to sniff them out.
09:53I don't know, unbelievable, really.
09:55It's a similar story with the 1965 Norton.
09:59So, he'd only gone for the paper,
10:01and then the next thing you know, he's like, this arrives.
10:05Daughters Alison and Fiona have seen it all before.
10:08All these bikes here, he used to share with people.
10:13And Deb would always have to take them to show his bikes and his cars.
10:17And that wasn't, he wasn't Boston.
10:19He always had a story to tell them.
10:21He had a love for life, he absolutely loved life.
10:25Every morning, he would get up,
10:27and he'd be looking for another project and something else to do.
10:31Also going to the auction at a later date are a couple of Mercs,
10:35an F-Reg SEL,
10:36and a 1967 2.8-litre, six-cylinder pagoda.
10:42This was his pride and joy.
10:44He's had it nearly 50 years.
10:47Probably been out in all that time twice in the rain.
10:50On a Sunday, he would go up to Barnard Castle,
10:53about 15 miles away, get an ice cream,
10:55sit and look at it, sit on the bench,
10:57look at his car, drive it back home.
11:00He'd be on his hands and knees,
11:01and he'd be shoe polishing.
11:04Everybody back in the day would shoe polish the tyres like this,
11:07but he'd be laid on his back, doing it inside.
11:10An absolute fanatic.
11:12Absolutely loved it.
11:15Initially, we didn't want to sell anything,
11:17and I wanted to keep everything, you know,
11:20but there's only so much stuff you can keep, isn't there?
11:24And if the next chapter's as good as the chapters before,
11:28we're on to a winner.
11:29Mm, yeah.
11:49Now, Martin, lovely to see you.
11:51Likewise.
11:52Nice to see you, mate.
11:53Nice to see you.
11:55Lovely little spot.
11:57Nice little place you've got here, isn't it?
11:59Well, it's not bad.
12:00That's a big shed.
12:01All got a big workshop, yes.
12:03Play around there all day long, can't you, mate?
12:05Bang on, eh?
12:07Derek's landed in Staffordshire
12:08to pick up Martin Anker's 60-year-old Alvis.
12:12But as always, he's tempted by what else might be on offer.
12:16I've got a BMC car in there that don't leak oil.
12:20Really?
12:20Well, you've drained it out, have you?
12:22Well, it's a Morris Louson.
12:24I reckon it's the only one in bloody prison.
12:26It is the only one in captivity, I can assure you.
12:29Yeah.
12:30Nice, isn't it?
12:32Yeah.
12:32What do you reckon that's worth?
12:33Hmm.
12:35I've got a soft spot for them.
12:36I think they're great, like, you know.
12:38And a nice one like that would do 10 grand, wouldn't it?
12:40Yeah.
12:40But eyes are soon back on the main attraction,
12:43a 1965 Alvis TE in light metallic gold.
12:49How long you had this?
12:50Since 1996.
12:52Oh, my word, haven't you?
12:53It's been in the family since 1969.
12:56Long time, isn't it?
12:58Bloody hell.
12:59Have you got overdrive on this?
13:01No, it's got five-speed ZF Fox.
13:02Of course it has.
13:04Absolutely, yeah.
13:05You're just testing me, aren't you?
13:07Yeah.
13:07No, I forgot it's got a ZF.
13:10Nice, isn't it?
13:11If I hadn't been an Aston man, I'd have had one of these.
13:15All right, we won't mess about.
13:17What do you reckon I should put as a reserve price on that?
13:21Ooh, you won't like this.
13:25All I can tell you is what I know it's worth.
13:28What do you reckon it's worth?
13:2920 grand.
13:31What you put on it, it's entirely up to you, but...
13:34If it went for 20, Derek, I'd be satisfied.
13:39Yeah, so it's money, isn't it?
13:40Yeah.
13:41And if somebody wants to give me 30k for the number plate,
13:44they can buy it as well.
13:46I'd have thought they'd have put it more than that, to be honest.
13:48I think that's value for money.
13:50Nice car.
13:51Yeah, it's all right.
13:52Yeah, you've got to make allowances for an Alvis.
13:55You have, because there's so many poor ones out there.
13:59But when you come across a nice one, it's a bit of a novelty.
14:02I mean, it's not a Minter, not a Concourse,
14:05but it's pretty good.
14:07Steeped in history, mate.
14:08Yeah.
14:09Can't buy that, can you?
14:10I'm sorry.
14:11I'm sad to see it go.
14:13You feel it, mate, don't you?
14:14Yeah.
14:15I know where you're coming from.
14:16I've loved this car.
14:17It's been a super car.
14:19You know, I've had hundreds of cars in my lifetime in a motor train,
14:24and I've never been emotional about a motor car before.
14:27No, no.
14:28Oh, my God.
14:31Now, will it be all right driving one of these posh cars?
14:37Sweet old girl, innit?
14:39Smooth as silver.
14:45Powerful old car.
14:46Smooth and powerful.
14:49Hope you haven't been bored stiff to old Codgers.
14:54Ticked over up there, isn't it?
14:55Just beautiful.
14:57Can't beat horsepower, can you?
14:58You cannot beat it.
15:00You've got to go to somebody that'll love that car,
15:02because it's...
15:03Well, you've just driven it, and I think you've enjoyed it.
15:08Go on, Derek.
15:09Don't prolong the agony.
15:12Bye, baby.
15:20And I could drive it.
15:22Yeah?
15:22Yeah, not bad.
15:27The old Cortina.
15:28Still badged as a console.
15:30Yeah, they had that sort of crossover period, didn't they?
15:33Yeah, no funny, innit?
15:34Yeah, Ford console before they went full bore Cortina.
15:38Lurking in the showroom,
15:39the dusty Ford that Charlie brought in from Melton Mowbray.
15:44The appeal of that is what?
15:45The amount of doors it's got,
15:47or the amount of doors it hasn't got.
15:49It's not great, bless her,
15:51but she's so genuine.
15:52She's been in the garage for 30-odd years or something,
15:54couldn't it?
15:55I was lucky enough to have a Lotus Cortina mark one,
15:59and I made the decision to sell it.
16:01Yeah, I lost a little bit on that one of mine,
16:03just proved you can't win on everything.
16:04They were achieving in excess of 50,000 at one point.
16:0840-ish now.
16:10They all want two doors.
16:12Four door, half the price.
16:15More equals less.
16:16I know she's got some paint issues and bits and pieces,
16:19they get that,
16:19but a little lump there, look.
16:21A little sweetie.
16:22I think that car will achieve
16:24somewhere between
16:26£3,500 and £4,000.
16:29Which seems incredibly good value to me.
16:31Yeah, but if it was a four door,
16:34a couple of grand for a four door.
16:36And if you were talking Lotus twin cam?
16:39Ah, yeah, a Lotus twin cam in that condition there,
16:43wanting a bit of work,
16:44it'll still push 30 grand.
16:47Crazy, isn't it, really?
16:53Ford Cortina Deluxe.
16:55There we are, look.
16:56Two door Cortina.
16:58That's the one that...
16:58Ah!
16:59Yeah.
16:59I picked it up,
17:00been stood for about 20, I believe,
17:02but 10 in the lockup that I got it out of.
17:05So, nice, early two door Cortina.
17:08Look, we've got £3,500 and we're off.
17:10It's been stood in a nice dry garage,
17:12which is the best thing.
17:13At £3,700 here with me.
17:15£3,800.
17:17It will make a car.
17:18It should do more money than that, really.
17:20We will try.
17:21At £3,900, I should think so.
17:23At £4,000 then.
17:25At £4,000,
17:26£4,400.
17:26£4,200.
17:27At £4,300.
17:29Still provisional,
17:30but we will try.
17:31Provisional.
17:33Norfolk at £4,300.
17:34I wasn't far enough.
17:37I don't quite know whether it was over-reserved.
17:39It was all the way, let's put it that way.
17:41And, yeah, they had a £5,000 reserve.
17:45And the best bidder, the day I could get,
17:47was for £3,000, which has been accepted.
17:49So, right decision, rightly so.
17:52Yes, I think that's its money.
17:53Simple as that.
17:54So, away it goes.
18:08There we go, look.
18:11Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
18:12Oh, blimey.
18:14Oh, he likes his Mercs.
18:16There you go.
18:16Hello.
18:17You all right?
18:18You all right?
18:18Yeah, yeah.
18:19Nice to meet you.
18:20Nigel, yeah.
18:21Nice to meet you, Jack.
18:23Jack and Amy have made it to County Durham
18:25to pick up the Henderson family's motorbikes.
18:29Oh, wow.
18:29You've got a fair collection of bits and pieces,
18:31haven't you, Nigel?
18:31Oh, he had a good collection.
18:33There's a few gone now,
18:35but this is what we've got left.
18:37These were all his then, were they?
18:38Yeah, he had a few more,
18:40but we've sold them.
18:42And then there's another one in bits
18:44that he's been doing up for the last 18 years.
18:49Everything's a long-term project.
18:51Yeah, that's it.
18:51And they think,
18:52do I spend the money on restoring that
18:54or do I go and buy another one to go with it?
18:57Yeah, so that's the story.
18:59I know.
19:00Where'd you stop?
19:01The bike market is a bit low at the moment.
19:03Yeah.
19:04It's certainly a buyer's market,
19:05but it has sort of increased.
19:07To be fair,
19:07they did really die off for a couple of months,
19:09but I suppose the sun's out now, isn't it?
19:10That's right.
19:11So, obviously, we'll try our best for you.
19:14A little butcher's bike will sneak in first in the corner.
19:16This is clean, isn't it?
19:17Needs finishing off.
19:19A nice little bike, isn't it?
19:20These sell well.
19:22Yeah, granddad buys him a lot, that's why, yeah.
19:28I feel that he's with us
19:31watching these bikes go.
19:33Nine times out of ten,
19:35I'd say us office girls,
19:36the rest of them, bless them,
19:37don't really get out,
19:38but no, it's just nice to see
19:39where they actually come from
19:41and the story behind them
19:43and then, obviously,
19:43we see the other side of it as well
19:45after they've sold
19:46and where they're going to.
19:48I'm going to have to start
19:49taking all the girls out with me.
19:50You're going to have to do one at a time.
19:52I'm going to have to just keep changing passengers
19:54every month, aren't I?
19:55And then the ones that give you
19:56the wrong direction
19:57don't take them again.
19:58Yeah, right.
20:00Lovely to meet you.
20:01All right.
20:04Thank you very much.
20:06Safe journey home.
20:07Thanks.
20:08Bye.
20:08Bye.
20:27The sun's shining
20:29and North Yorkshire's
20:31looking its best.
20:33The good weather's also
20:34brought the browsers out
20:36and Derek's homed in
20:37on a vehicle
20:38that for around
20:39eight grand
20:40has got holidays
20:41written all over it.
20:44Here we have.
20:45Basically,
20:46it's an Austin A60 van
20:47bagged as a Morris,
20:49which is fine.
20:50It's a 71, 72,
20:52as we can see.
20:53It's a two-berth
20:54caravanette conversion.
20:56It tickles me a bit,
20:57really,
20:57when you talk to people
20:59and they say,
20:59I'm going to have
21:00one of them new-style
21:01pop-up roofs
21:02and fit it into
21:03my day van,
21:04for argument's sake.
21:05And I have to laugh
21:06because here we are,
21:081970,
21:09and basically the same thing,
21:11but better.
21:12So it's not a pop-up roof,
21:14it's an elevating roof.
21:16This was the era
21:17when Britain's post-war workers
21:19had spare time
21:21and cash to splash.
21:23Van makers like Bedford
21:25and Commer
21:25tapped into that
21:26as the country
21:27had its first
21:28campervan moment.
21:29Full height
21:30means you can stand up,
21:31of course,
21:32both ends
21:32rather than just one end.
21:34No matter what people say,
21:35you can't get away
21:36from the main purpose
21:37of converting a van like this
21:40is it doubled up
21:41as everyday transport
21:43and with a top-down,
21:44it went into
21:45an everyday garage.
21:46That's the big advantage.
21:58Oh, dear.
21:59No.
22:00It'd be like something
22:00out of Carry On Camping,
22:01wouldn't it,
22:02pulling up on the campsite
22:03with that?
22:04There's a little rail,
22:05look,
22:06you can hang your tea towel
22:07on it to dry
22:08when you've washed up.
22:09What is that, Paul?
22:10That 1971 Morris?
22:11Oh, lovely, innit?
22:12An A60.
22:14Is it?
22:14Yeah.
22:15Is it lovely?
22:15Yeah.
22:16Oh, right.
22:17It's an early camper, innit?
22:19Lovely.
22:20Lovely, it's a...
22:22Yeah.
22:22No, you're not seeing it?
22:23You know,
22:24I think she might be
22:25more of a five-star girl.
22:26Do you think so?
22:28What, the group
22:29or the hotel?
22:32But it's got a bench seat
22:33so you could possibly
22:34fit three of you in there,
22:35small people.
22:37That'll be to take
22:37the water in, look,
22:38and then that's
22:39for your petrol.
22:40Is that what it is, Paul?
22:42Is it?
22:42Yeah, yeah,
22:43it will be, won't it, yeah?
22:44I would think
22:45that way around as well, yeah.
22:46You don't want to
22:47mix them up, do you?
22:48No, no, we've just...
22:49It would be very nice
22:49brushing your teeth
22:50with petrol, would it?
22:52That's a bit clean.
22:585.09, the 1971
23:00Morris there,
23:01little Morris camper van there.
23:02Oh, you know a bit
23:03about these.
23:04No.
23:04There you are,
23:05there we are.
23:05You think I'd bitten that?
23:08Suntour,
23:09Suntour, there we are.
23:10No, not familiar with that.
23:11Morris then,
23:12where are we,
23:13you tell me.
23:13Anyone want to start me then?
23:16£5,000 asking.
23:18Anything on there, Will?
23:19No, I'm afraid
23:21I've got nothing
23:21on my sheet
23:22on this one.
23:23No.
23:28No, only if you are paying.
23:32That's it
23:33for the motorhome,
23:34and with no interest,
23:35it returned to its owner
23:37for a proper staycation.
23:44Alvis.
23:45Alvis.
23:45You want me to come
23:46and have a look
23:46at this Alvis,
23:47don't you?
23:48It looks a real genuine
23:49old car, though,
23:50doesn't it?
23:51I like bits like this.
23:52Right attention to detail,
23:53isn't it?
23:54Just lovely, isn't it?
23:56They're a lovely old girl,
23:56aren't they?
23:57They're a good usable
23:57old car.
24:00There's a kink there.
24:02There's microblistering here.
24:04There's microblistering
24:05everywhere, really.
24:06Now, we've all had
24:07microblistering,
24:09and it's gutting.
24:11Yeah.
24:12Moisture either in
24:14or under the paint.
24:16It won't show straight away,
24:18you see.
24:18They're lovely for a while,
24:19and then they start
24:20and come to light,
24:22and you think,
24:23oh.
24:24But, let's be honest,
24:25down the road,
24:26whizzing along,
24:27it's lovely, isn't she?
24:28What a majestic old girl.
24:33Alvis is one of the great
24:35and almost forgotten names
24:37of British car manufacturing.
24:40But back in the day,
24:41its vehicles set the standard
24:43for sporting excellence.
24:45Alvis also made
24:46aeroplane engines
24:47and armoured cars,
24:48but it was the glamorous
24:49tourers that captured
24:50the imagination,
24:51made to the highest
24:52levels of luxury,
24:54to rival Bentley and Jaguar.
24:56The T21 series
24:58set the tone,
24:59with its 3.0-litre engines
25:00adding speed and panache.
25:02But as the 1960s rolled on,
25:04sales dropped,
25:05and the company
25:06was taken over by Rover.
25:08However, in recent years,
25:09the brand has been revived,
25:10and the high-end,
25:12high-spec tradition continues.
25:19In my opinion,
25:20that car there,
25:21in that condition,
25:23is worth late teens.
25:2520 if he's lucky.
25:27Lucky.
25:28I can't see it.
25:29Lots of people
25:30that come into
25:31the classic movement
25:31all think they want
25:33a Jag or an Alvis
25:34or a whatever.
25:36And,
25:37in my opinion,
25:39got it all wrong,
25:40buy yourself a Morris 1000,
25:41there's one there,
25:42look.
25:42Morris 1000,
25:44MGB,
25:45Triumph Herald,
25:46maybe,
25:47but certainly
25:47Morris 1000,
25:48MGB.
25:50Cheapest classic car
25:51in the world
25:51to run,
25:52to maintain,
25:53super reliable,
25:54brilliant.
25:55and then if it's for you,
25:57then move on
25:58to the Alvis
25:59and you mark my words,
26:02whoever has entered it,
26:03whoever is selling it,
26:04vendor,
26:04best thing he can do,
26:05buy himself a Morris 1000.
26:07It is, honestly.
26:08Funny you say that,
26:09because he has got
26:10a Morris Traveller.
26:13There you go,
26:14there you go.
26:15Yep,
26:16brilliant.
26:18I was right then,
26:19weren't I?
26:19Hey,
26:19look at that,
26:20that's twice this week,
26:20I've been right.
26:22Twice.
26:24Yeah,
26:25so,
26:26so,
26:26that's my take on it,
26:27yep,
26:28start off with a moggy,
26:29finish off with a moggy.
26:30Brilliant.
26:31And have everything else in between.
26:33Including the Alvis.
26:34Including the Alvis.
26:35It's a nice old cat.
26:37She's all right.
26:43Right,
26:44she's yours.
26:46The Bishop opened,
26:47bikes are back.
26:48And there's a reception committee.
26:52So,
26:53another bike for you to go in
26:54with all the other bikes?
26:56Good.
26:57A bit of loan bikes,
26:58we could do with a few more.
27:00How many bikes have you got in?
27:0271.
27:03How many more do you want?
27:05Last year I had 140.
27:12It's quite interesting, really,
27:14if you think about it.
27:15I mean,
27:15it's got...
27:18The shockers always have clearly been in the sea
27:20for a few years,
27:21haven't they?
27:21There's no doubt about that.
27:23And it's a Royal Enfield single,
27:25350,
27:26500,
27:26I don't know what.
27:27And having joined the throng,
27:30Derek's on the case.
27:32It's a winter project.
27:34That's it.
27:34Which winter is debatable,
27:36but it's one of a few winters,
27:38probably.
27:39As well as an AJS
27:40and a Norton,
27:41there's a pair of Triumphs,
27:43including a classic off-roader.
27:45It's a little Triumph Cub,
27:46a little 200 Cub.
27:48Nice little trial,
27:48an upswept exhaust.
27:50Really does look the part.
27:51Sooty's a trialling man,
27:52he'll tell you more about this,
27:54I would think.
27:54He's probably trialled them.
27:56You ever trialled a Cub?
27:58No.
27:59No,
28:00but I've seen plenty of us.
28:01Yeah.
28:02They're still popular.
28:03They are popular in,
28:04you know,
28:04like pre-65 trials
28:05and stuff like that.
28:06Yeah.
28:07Yeah,
28:07that's a nice little machine,
28:08that actually,
28:09and it's a right purposeful
28:10little bike,
28:10isn't it?
28:12Pre-65,
28:13of course,
28:13so it was pre-Japanese
28:15who came over,
28:17like they did with every other
28:18model of motorbike,
28:19and wiped the floor with us,
28:20unfortunately.
28:21That's exactly what they did.
28:22Poor old Cub,
28:23never stood a chance,
28:24like.
28:25And the pick of the bunch,
28:26a bike with great escape vibes.
28:29It's a 650,
28:30that's a trophy,
28:31and slightly different forks
28:33and rubber covers
28:34and stuff like that,
28:35headlamps like this.
28:36They just looked a little bit more,
28:38I think they were maybe Americanised,
28:40built for the American market,
28:42really,
28:42because they do look,
28:43they look like a Steve McQueen bike,
28:45I think,
28:45don't they,
28:46you know?
28:46It's got what the lads used to call
28:48a knacker catcher,
28:49which was,
28:50obviously,
28:50it's a little rack
28:51to put your folded up mac
28:52and tie it on with a bungee.
28:54And they said,
28:55if you're unlucky enough
28:56and went over the top,
28:58you could easily get tangled up in there,
29:00like,
29:00you know,
29:00but I think you'd have to get flies open
29:02at that time,
29:03personally,
29:03and I don't know many guys
29:04that rode these
29:05when they fly those flies open,
29:07like,
29:07but,
29:07yeah,
29:09I think the answer was
29:10keep your flies shut.
29:12And keep your fingers crossed.
29:15that's,
29:15that's,
29:16that's,
29:16that's,
29:16I think,
29:16so,
29:17I think that'll do
29:18somewhere between
29:19three and a half
29:19and four and a half.
29:20Nice bike.
29:24614 is the lovely Triumph,
29:261967 Triumph there,
29:27look at that,
29:28650 Triumph,
29:29what a bonny machine as well,
29:30at 3,500 pound we've got,
29:33at 3,500 pound there,
29:34and are we all done at 35?
29:36Submit it at 3,500.
29:38It's still provisional
29:40for the Triumph 650,
29:42proving it's still a tricky market
29:44for old British bikes.
29:47A 1960 AJS,
29:491,000 pound,
29:50cheap bike,
29:51gonna sell it provisionally
29:51down to 1,000 pound.
29:53Bargain of the day,
29:54that.
29:55Provisional.
29:56Norton Jubilee,
29:58she's a nice old bike,
29:59makes a change in the colours as well,
30:01there you go,
30:01at 1,500 pound,
30:03we'll submit that for you.
30:05The Royal Enfield,
30:06there we are,
30:08don't expect to ride it home,
30:10where are we gonna be?
30:11800 pound we've got.
30:13Provisional then,
30:13at 800 pound that we've all done,
30:15800 we'll submit it.
30:171959 Triumph Trials bike there,
30:19look at that,
30:19that's a nice bit of kit.
30:211,350,
30:221,375,
30:23at 1,375,
30:25then I'm gonna drop the armour then,
30:26at 1,375,
30:271,4,
30:28they have to be sharpish that,
30:29he's gonna lose it,
30:301,400 quid,
30:31still the cheapest bike in the world,
30:32at 1,425,
30:341,425,
30:35then I'm gonna sell,
30:36armour's coming down,
30:37at 1,425,
30:39sold,
30:39too late,
30:40missed it,
30:40there you go.
30:42Which leaves,
30:43one of Derek's favourite forms of transport.
30:47Pushers bike,
30:49Trey's bike,
30:49I used to ride one when I was 14 or 15,
30:51don't you,
30:52I've done many miles on one of them,
30:53fell off of a few times and all.
30:57There we are then,
30:58current bid,
30:59£75,
31:00£75 we got,
31:01nowhere near enough,
31:02£100,
31:02£100,
31:03£150,
31:05£200,
31:05£200,
31:06£250,
31:07iron brakes and a little wheel,
31:08dead right,
31:09£300,
31:10£300,
31:11there's a little club being formed in York,
31:13for them you know,
31:14yeah I'm gonna join it,
31:15£300,
31:16£300 and go,
31:17I said I'll come out on me trade bike,
31:19this is York,
31:20well I'm not,
31:21I'm gonna put it in the van,
31:22leave the van round the corner,
31:23and pedal in on me trade bike,
31:25like you know,
31:25to the meat,
31:25so I'm gonna cheat a bit,
31:28£325 and away,
31:29good buy that,
31:30selling it then,
31:31£350,
31:32£350,
31:33all done then,
31:34last time looking round,
31:36£350,
31:37Hornsea,
31:39and with offers for all the bikes now in,
31:41it's down to Ange,
31:43to break the news to the Henderson family.
31:47So I've just got two bikes that are on provision at the moment,
31:50lot 614,
31:51the 1967 Triumph,
31:53you had a reserve of £4,000,
31:54it's done three and a half,
31:56yeah,
31:56and then the other one is the 1953 Royal Enfield,
31:59the reserve was £1,200,
32:00it's done £800,
32:02all right,
32:03perfect,
32:03that's all of them gone then,
32:05bye,
32:07all of them,
32:08oh that's good news isn't it,
32:10oh that's good,
32:11I'm happy for him,
32:12that is very unusual,
32:13because almost every email I send out for people wanting to sell their bikes,
32:17says that the bike market is at an all time low,
32:19so that's good,
32:21happy for him.
32:22He should be doing cartwheels shouldn't he,
32:24because the bike market is very volatile,
32:27the old British bikes,
32:29they really are very,
32:31very difficult to rehome,
32:33but bikes in general,
32:35across the board,
32:36are terrific value at the moment,
32:37if you're like,
32:38shall I,
32:39shall I buy them now,
32:40because they cannot get a lot cheaper,
32:42they really can't.
33:00You're in at £180,
33:02£180 bid then,
33:03nice size sign that,
33:04£180 bid,
33:06£180 bid,
33:07look,
33:07mix on it up there,
33:08you can see it,
33:09£180 bid then,
33:10provisionally for the furs.
33:12One of my favourite cars,
33:15Alvis,
33:16TE21,
33:173 litre,
33:17straight six,
33:18five speed gearbox,
33:20beautiful car,
33:22quality car,
33:23hand built car,
33:24all these panels,
33:25hand built,
33:26bit of micro blessing on the paint work unfortunately,
33:28right colour,
33:29right condition other than that,
33:31it's going under the hammer now,
33:32I think personally,
33:34it's,
33:34well I know it's worth between 20 and 25,
33:37award winner,
33:38cups in the back and such now,
33:40long term ownership,
33:42I've always wanted one,
33:43I would love this car.
33:47First thing I must make crystal clear,
33:50is the registration number,
33:51is not going with the car,
33:52what doesn't go with the car Ash?
33:54The point.
33:54Correct,
33:55well done,
33:56there you go then,
33:57so the lovely car,
33:57look the Alvis TE21,
33:59what a fantastic looking car,
34:00where are we going to be?
34:01You tell me,
34:0215,000 pound,
34:03thank you at 15,
34:04at 15,250 and five,
34:0615,500,
34:0715,500 and 750,
34:0915,750,
34:11what a lot of car,
34:1215,750,
34:1316,000,
34:1416,250,
34:1516,250,
34:1716,500,
34:18oh good morning France,
34:19hello there,
34:2016,000,

34:32plus,

34:35it's provisional France at the moment,
34:36we'll speak to the owner,

34:39there will be a deal to be done,
34:41thank you ever so much,
34:42it is a very majestic looking car,
34:43we're at 16,500 pound then,
34:45we'll put you down France,
34:46thank you ever so much for your bidding,
34:48at 16,500 pounds,
34:52provisional to France,
34:53thank you very much.
34:55so the Alvis will soon be leaving the building,
34:58because originally,
34:59we thought that car was going to have to go,
35:02for a lot more,
35:03father thought that,
35:04yeah,
35:05but the,
35:05the lady and gent that own the car,
35:07Martin,
35:08he's happy to have the bid,
35:09you know,
35:09he,
35:09he wants the money,
35:10not the car,
35:11so anyway,
35:12resurrected,
35:13everyone's happy.
35:13And he's left to Paul,
35:15to cement the,
35:16en temps cordial,
35:17with the new owner.
35:18Thank you,
35:19bye now,
35:19bye bye.
35:21Fortunately,
35:21his English is a lot better than my French,
35:24so,
35:25he,
35:25he is,
35:26taking the holiday,
35:29in the south of France,
35:31and,
35:32it may take a,
35:33a few days,
35:34to make pay.
35:37A few weeks later,
35:38there's a new arrival in northern France,
35:41complete,
35:41with French number plates.
35:43And talking of which,
35:45the original UK registration,
35:47has been kept by Martin,
35:48the former owner,
35:49of the Alvis.
36:02Hello,
36:03I'm Alistair.
36:04And I'm Rachel.
36:05And we're,
36:05both from Watney originally,
36:07but living down in,
36:08Northumberland,
36:08can you?
36:09They're certainly a long way from home,
36:11but this couple,
36:12haven't lost their passion,
36:13for all things with wheels.
36:17We've had a motorbike,
36:17in the conservatory,
36:19and one Christmas,
36:20I came home,
36:20to find the bonnet of my car,
36:21at the end of my bed.
36:22That was the dad.
36:23That was,
36:23that was my dad,
36:24that was you.
36:24The conservatory was me.
36:25The conservatory was you.
36:26So yeah,
36:27I'm,
36:27I'm used to it,
36:27yeah.
36:31Is the,
36:32choke on this one,
36:33slack?
36:34No.
36:34No.
36:34It's tightened up,
36:36I like it,
36:36I'll just slowly creep.
36:37I was surrounded by cars,
36:39motorbikes,
36:40tractors,
36:41all that growing up,
36:42so definitely had a lot of freedom,
36:43in that regard.
36:45Used to work at a bike shop in Orkney,
36:47cycling shop.
36:48So went from building push bikes,
36:50and then,
36:51as the usual way it goes,
36:52it escalates to things with motors.
36:55They built up a nice collection of their own,
36:57the latest of which is a 1967 Triumph Trophy.
37:02On the face of it,
37:03it's as British as tea and biscuits,
37:05but Alistair has given it an American tweak.
37:09I was always wanting to make it into a desert slate,
37:11so I didn't want one that was either really,
37:13really original,
37:14or really highly restored,
37:17and like immaculate,
37:18because I'd feel bad taking off all those lovely exhausts,
37:21and things like that,
37:21because I was just wanting a desert sled,
37:23so I was wanting something that was a good base for it.
37:26For those not in the know,
37:28Hollywood heartthrob Steve McQueen
37:29was into desert sled bikes,
37:31that were often adapted with high exhaust pipes,
37:34for racing across California's arid trails.
37:38The pipes and the tyres make such a big difference,
37:40and change to the look of the bike.
37:41These ones were the 955,
37:44so they give a nice line along the side here,
37:46for the desert sled look.
37:48New tyre on the front,
37:49trial style one,
37:50all very desert sled-y.
37:52New brakes in there,
37:53just to improve it a bit,
37:54and they've actually come up really well,
37:55along with the right fitment of shocks.
37:58Well, the ones that came on it,
38:00when I bought it,
38:01were half an inch short,
38:02so I was buzzing the tyre
38:04over some of the big bumps.
38:06The chunky tyres
38:07was kind of the biggest difference I noticed,
38:09compared to other bikes that you've had,
38:12just with the road noise,
38:13whereas I'm used to more road tyres,
38:16road bikes.
38:17But as far as being a passenger in the back,
38:21high exhaust keeps your leg warm.
38:23Yeah, that's true.
38:30Alistair had been keeping an eye out
38:32for the right bike,
38:33and with values of older British motorcycles falling,
38:36he decided a price of three and a half grand
38:38was too good to miss.
38:42It's got something that I could play with,
38:43could you have a bit of fun with?
38:45You weren't going to look,
38:46and then you had a look,
38:47and then you had to buy it.
38:49Yeah.
38:50It was a really good deal, honest.
38:54In recent months,
38:56the triumph has been on its travels,
38:58having been taken back to Orkney,
38:59to be shown off at the island's classic motor show.
39:03It's always amazing,
39:04the amount of stuff that comes out of the woodwork
39:06in Orkney for this show,
39:07like, for such a small population on the whole,
39:09the range of stuff that can be there.
39:12Definitely trying to keep it and use it.
39:15There's a few things I just want to tidy up with,
39:16and probably through the winter,
39:17I'll take it to bits
39:18and just give everything a really good clean
39:20and an update,
39:22wiring and things like that.
39:24I'm not wanting to go through it too much cosmetically,
39:26because I like that oily rag side of it,
39:29but just make it reliable, good,
39:32hopefully leak a little bit less,
39:33but it's a British bike,
39:35so it's going to leak.
39:36You can only try so hard.
39:49You've got such a big steering wheel,
39:51so obviously it's light on the steering.
39:52The clutch is soft.
39:54It's not a racing car.
39:56You're not going to start overtaking things
39:57at 80 miles an hour cos you wouldn't want to.
39:59I like it.
40:00I think it's nice to have a radio in it,
40:01cos you can't hear the engine, I think.
40:02It's a little bit like a sewing machine.
40:08On the leafy lanes of East Anglia,
40:10Gary Sutton's putting the 1963 Ford Cortina Deluxe
40:14through its paces,
40:15after some repair work to make it roadworthy again.
40:20So we've got the engine running,
40:21the brakes are done,
40:22and everything's lovely.
40:24I don't mind the colour,
40:25and a lot of people buy them like this one,
40:27they turn them into the lockers cos they're two doors.
40:29You know, if you've got to paint it white.
40:31Um, I'm just going to paint it blue,
40:35and then we'll see once it's done.
40:37I must just sell it.
40:39And I don't know,
40:39it's just I think people collect pictures,
40:41don't they, or coins or whatever,
40:42and I'll just collect this sort of stuff
40:45while I remember when I was a kid,
40:47you know what I mean?
40:48So far, so straightforward.
40:51But Gary has an itch that he just can't scratch.
40:56So what, why so many?
40:58Oh, I've got some more,
40:59but they're in the shed,
41:00and I couldn't get them out in time.
41:02Sorry, you've got some more Cortinas?
41:03Yeah, more Cortinas, yeah.
41:04I've got nine all together.
41:06So you've got nine?
41:07Yeah, I don't like, obviously,
41:08like driving them,
41:10just part of your...
41:11Collecting them?
41:11...when you was young,
41:12and I don't know,
41:14I just like them,
41:14I like the shape,
41:15I like the back,
41:16I like the size,
41:16I can just about get in them,
41:17because I'm a bit slimmer,
41:19and yeah, I do,
41:20I like the Ford Angler and all,
41:21but they're a little bit tight again.
41:22How many Ford Anglers have you got?
41:24Three.
41:25A bit of three, yeah.
41:26I'm not being big-headed, nothing.
41:28I don't drink, I don't smoke,
41:29and I don't want to drink,
41:30and I don't want to smoke.
41:30I got up to 160 cars at one time.
41:32How many?
41:33160.
41:34And the only reason I knew I had 160
41:36because my daughters,
41:37three daughters,
41:37grasped me up to the mum,
41:39and they went in the field
41:40and in the shed,
41:42told the mum how many I got,
41:44wish I had them now,
41:45but I've not got them now,
41:47I'm down to about wherever,
41:48I don't know,
41:4980, 90,
41:49but the cars I got now
41:51are better cars than what I did have.
41:52They're a little bit more money.
41:56Which would be the go-to one?
41:57I don't know,
41:58this white one,
41:58I've had this lookalike,
42:00but they ain't a proper loaders.
42:02I ain't drive that for about 15 years.
42:04Sorry, Gary,
42:05you've not driven it for 15 years?
42:07No, 15,
42:07no, we pushed it around here,
42:08because I knew you was coming.
42:11So the one that you've driven the most,
42:12out of this lot,
42:14is the one that you're perched on now,
42:16because I'm here filming you.
42:17You made me, yeah,
42:18but we won't go into that.
42:21It doesn't matter, does it?
42:23I think to go in that car now,
42:24be realistic,
42:2655, 60 is about right.
42:28You know what I mean?
42:28That's all you want to do,
42:29because you're not,
42:29you want to race,
42:30you can go and go and buy me,
42:31you know,
42:32Cosworth is saying,
42:32but this is just
42:33a little beat the weight of people,
42:35some people wave to you,
42:36and people love it,
42:37don't they?
42:37My dad had one,
42:38my granddad had one,
42:39and now I've got one,
42:40and everybody's got one.
42:41Well, hang on,
42:42you've got more than one.
42:43Well, yeah.
42:44I thought I'd run a drink of smoke.
42:48And it seems Gary's not quite
42:50reached the end of the road
42:51when it comes to Cortina's.
42:53He's now aying up
42:54and marked to her state.
42:56I might even tell the wife
42:57before I buy it,
42:58see how brave I get.
42:59Oh, I'd like to come and film that.
43:01So that was it.
43:02So best thing not to tell the wives,
43:04until you get it home.
43:06You lived in.
43:07And if you've really got the aunt,
43:09tell it belongs to your mate.
43:12For a little while.
43:14Be all right, won't it?
