00:01President Donald Trump rallying thousands of supporters
00:04at The Villages, the world's largest retirement community
00:08located in Central Florida.
00:10He also spent a lot of time rambling on about
00:13malfunctioning microphones and the village people.
00:17This speech has not been narrowly focused.
00:21Are you worried about a senior with declining mental faculties?
00:25Don't know where he'll be happiest?
00:27Consider...
00:28The Villages
00:30Your senior should be in a secure and safe place.
00:34I should be indoors at a secure facility
00:36where I can quietly, beautifully, and safely play.
00:40At The Villages, your senior can enjoy golf,
00:44do aerobics, and give important speeches.
00:47You've got fish to catch.
00:49If you catch some extra fish, enjoy it.
00:52You've got plenty of fish.
00:55There are a lot of fish in the ocean.
00:57I don't know where they came up with that one, but there's a lot of fish.
01:01Plus, our experienced staff is always there to help.
01:04Whether it's trouble on the stairs or freshening him up after an accidental crap.
01:09It's the Lit Show with Stephen Colbert.
01:15Tonight, give it to me straight.
01:36And now, live on tape from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, it's Stephen Colbert!
02:04Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, friends, to The Late Show.
02:06I'm your host, Stephen Colbert, and to everyone watching here and at home, may the 4th be with you.
02:17Because, of course, we know May the 4th is International Star Wars Day.
02:22In fact, the whole month is important to Star Wars fans, or as they call themselves, Beliebers,
02:28because the first six films all debuted in May,
02:33and this year we're getting the first new Star Wars film in theater since 2019,
02:38Star Wars, The Mandalorian, and Grogu.
02:44Obviously, obviously, I'm thrilled that Baby Yoda is getting a spin-off,
02:47but I'm worried he's going to end up like all child stars.
02:56DUI, rehab, then hosting his own Netflix dating show, Grogu's Bang Boy Beach.
03:04Grogu's, Grogu's, Grogu's.
03:07This new Star Wars film has plenty of big names, because Jeremy Allen White will star,
03:11and this is true, he is starring as Jabba the Hutt's son.
03:18Oh.
03:20Yes, chef.
03:24Jubba, Jubba.
03:25I wouldn't...
03:27It wouldn't be Star Wars without toys and tie-ins.
03:29For this movie, Burger King is rolling the items out like BBQ Bounty Whopper
03:34and Imperial Cheddar Ranch Tots,
03:38and Nabiska was launching Grogu Nilla Nummies,
03:42an amazing treat for any kid who's always wanted to eat Grogu's...
03:47eggs?
03:50Skin?
03:51Poop?
03:51We're not sure.
03:53I don't think this one was cleared over at Skywalker Ranch,
03:56but today, and this is absolutely true,
04:00Pornhub updated their logo
04:01to include the symbol
04:04of the Rebel Alliance.
04:06Which makes sense.
04:07Everybody loves Star Wars-themed pornos,
04:09like
04:09Obi-Wan can bone me,
04:14R2DD2,
04:15and, of course,
04:17Hand Solo.
04:20In this one,
04:22Hand definitely shoots first.
04:25But stars aren't the only place.
04:28The stars...
04:29Okay.
04:30Everybody stay calm.
04:32Of course, the stars aren't the only place.
04:34There's a war.
04:35There's also one in Iran.
04:37Well...
04:37Good segue!
04:46Thank you, Graphics Department.
04:48Well,
04:49over the weekend,
04:50Iran submitted a 14-point plan
04:52to end the war.
04:53It's pretty one-sided.
04:55They propose that both sides
04:56lift their blockades
04:58of the Strait of Hormuz,
04:59Israel completely end the war in Lebanon,
05:01the U.S. release Iran's frozen assets,
05:04require the U.S. to pay compensation,
05:06and lift all sanctions against Tehran.
05:08In addition,
05:09Iran would get
05:10the new grand theft auto,
05:13free guacamole
05:14and participating in Chipotles,
05:16and a hall pass
05:17to sleep with Lady Liberty's sister,
05:19Tammy.
05:21Tammy's fun.
05:22Tammy's way more fun.
05:24Trump rejected the offer,
05:26and yesterday,
05:26he posted this image saying,
05:28I have all the cards.
05:32Which,
05:32you may have seen this,
05:33is cool,
05:34except you might notice
05:36the cards Trump is holding
05:37are from the game Uno,
05:39where, quite famously,
05:41the object is to get rid
05:42of all your cards.
05:44I have so many cards.
05:45No, I have so many cards.
05:47Look at this.
05:47I have so many cards.
05:49This idiot over here,
05:51just,
05:51hold on.
05:53There we go.
05:54Here we go.
05:58This idiot over here
05:59just played a draw four,
06:00and I get to draw four more.
06:02I got so many cards.
06:04I got the three of hearts.
06:05I got the blockbuster membership.
06:08Charizard.
06:11The longer this goes on,
06:14just the worst things get
06:16for average consumers.
06:17Last week,
06:18crude oil hit a wartime high,
06:20trading above $126.
06:22And I'd say Iran has America
06:24over a barrel,
06:25but we can't afford a barrel?
06:28Can we do this over a bucket?
06:31As a result,
06:32today,
06:33the average price of gas
06:34hit $4.46 a gallon.
06:38God knows what it's doing
06:39to the price of grass and ass.
06:44But,
06:45come on.
06:46Ask your parents.
06:47Ask your grandparents.
06:49But you got to give it
06:50to President Trump.
06:50He campaigned on $2 gas,
06:52and now he's delivering
06:53more than twice
06:53what he promised.
06:56One Wall Street trader...
07:02Did my own.
07:03Did my own.
07:04One Wall Street trader
07:05explain why oil prices
07:06suddenly spiked?
07:07They thought this crisis
07:08in the strait
07:10would be short-lived
07:11due to the infamous taco
07:13or Trump always chickens out.
07:15But it turned into,
07:16it turned into a nacho,
07:18which stands for
07:19not a chance Hormuz opens.
07:22Well,
07:23if I may,
07:24I'd like to suggest
07:25my own acronym,
07:26carnitas,
07:28which stands for
07:29Can Anyone Recommend Nursing Home,
07:31I Think His
07:32A-Brain-sploded.
07:37This...
07:41I don't know what that is,
07:42but that's very pretty.
07:44The high price of fuel
07:46took its toll this weekend
07:47because yesterday,
07:49Spirit Airlines shut down.
07:52Oh, no,
07:52I have three more weeks
07:53of shows to do.
07:56Now I won't have
07:57Spirit Airlines jokes?
07:59Quick,
07:59somebody check on Arby's.
08:02The Spirit Airlines
08:04of shaved beef.
08:12Spirit announced
08:13their immediate closure
08:14in a statement saying,
08:15all flights have been canceled
08:16and customer service
08:17is no longer available,
08:20which, coincidentally,
08:21was also Spirit's motto.
08:24One more for the road, baby!
08:33So, Spirit is gone,
08:35but there are still plenty
08:36of safe and reliable airlines
08:38out there,
08:38like United.
08:41What's new with them?
08:43Well, yesterday,
08:44a United Airlines plane
08:46struck a bakery truck
08:47on the New Jersey turnpike.
08:49I know that sounds bad,
08:51but trust me,
08:51it looks so much worse.
08:54I'm going to show you
08:55the dash cam footage
08:56of the bakery truck,
08:58but first,
08:58I just want to stress,
08:59everyone's okay,
09:00which is surprising,
09:02because check this out.
09:03Dash cam footage
09:04shows the moment
09:05a truck is struck.
09:08As the United Airlines flight
09:10approached Newark-Liberty
09:11International Airport
09:12Sunday afternoon.
09:13If you look closely,
09:14you can see
09:15what appears to be
09:16the wheel of the plane
09:17out the driver's window.
09:19Okay, that is,
09:20I know that is shocking,
09:21but don't forget,
09:21this accident was predicted
09:2325 years ago
09:24by the opening
09:25of The Sopranos.
09:32Thankfully,
09:34thankfully,
09:34neither the driver
09:35or anyone on the plane
09:37was hurt,
09:37and investigators
09:38are still trying
09:39to figure out
09:39what happened,
09:40but I think
09:41I found a clue.
09:41It turns out
09:42this flight
09:42was arriving
09:43from Italy's
09:43Marco Polo Airport.
09:48Well,
09:49there's your answer.
09:50Okay,
09:51okay,
09:51tower,
09:52okay,
09:52tower.
09:53Tower,
09:53we are coming in
09:54for landing.
09:55I'm just gonna
09:56put on my blindfold.
10:00Marco?
10:03Marco,
10:04please,
10:04please respond,
10:05Polo.
10:07I smell dinner rolls.
10:11Well,
10:12Spirit Airlines
10:13isn't the only
10:14iconic company
10:15we lost this weekend
10:15because after nearly
10:1630 years of service,
10:18Ask Jeeves
10:19has shut down.
10:21If you're unfamiliar
10:23with Ask Jeeves,
10:24which went on
10:25to become Ask.com,
10:26it was an internet
10:26search engine
10:27originally depicted
10:28as a snooty
10:29British butler
10:30who was later
10:313D rendered
10:32and rebranded
10:33apparently as a
10:34pervert who liked
10:35to watch.
10:38In a statement,
10:40in a statement,
10:41Jeeves' parent
10:41company said,
10:42To you,
10:43the millions of users
10:44who turn to us
10:45for answers
10:46in a rapidly
10:47changing world,
10:48thank you
10:48for your endless
10:49curiosity,
10:50your loyalty,
10:51and your trust.
10:52Well,
10:52thanks a lot,
10:53Jeeves.
10:54That's what I was
10:55gonna say on my
10:55last show.
10:57We got a great
10:58show for you tonight.
11:00My guests are
11:01Christopher Nolan
11:02and Dave Bull,
11:03but when we come back
11:05we'll check in
11:06on some of my
11:06favorite puppies.
11:08Enjoy this one.
11:09Thank you, sir.
11:12November 10th.
11:30I'll be on to see her
11:31subscribe.
11:32Hey, everybody,
11:33welcome back.
11:35Give it up for Louis Kato and the great big joy machine.
11:43Folks, it's time I finally came clean on a controversial issue.
11:47I love dogs, and I don't care who knows.
11:51Cancel me.
11:52In fact, I love dogs so much, I've done a long-running segment on the show called Rescue
11:57Dog Rescue, where we help find homes for real rescue dogs by having a celebrity guest join
12:03me to tell flattering lies about the dogs to make them even that much more attractive.
12:07And I'm proud to say that every dog we have featured has been adopted, but now, now with
12:20the show coming to an end, I've been wondering what exactly happened to all those dogs.
12:25Well, it turns out they're living good lives with nice people who took them in, which is
12:29boring.
12:30So, after years of lying about dogs to find them a home, I think it's time to lie to you
12:35one last time about where those actual dogs are today.
12:40This is Rescue Dog Rescue, where arf they now?
12:51Over the past decade, this segment has found loving homes for so many adorable mutts, from
12:57Luna to Denise to Nick Offerman.
13:01Don't forget to spay and or neuter your nick.
13:05So, let's catch up on what some of these lovable puppies have been up to.
13:09First up is Nugget.
13:11After appearing on the show, he earned his masters and black belt in karate.
13:15You got to respect his work ethic, because if you don't, he'll do this to your face.
13:22Then there was Biscuit.
13:23She was on the show with Seth Rogen.
13:25Biscuit moved to Connecticut with her new family, where she took up gardening.
13:29She's been called the Martha Stewart of dogs, because she also went to prison for insider trading.
13:35Then there was the dog we refer to as Name Redacted.
13:39Mark Hamill explained why.
13:41I'd love to tell you his real name, but he's in witness protection after testifying against
13:46a murderous drug dealer.
13:48Well, after seeing that episode, the cartel found her.
13:51And in order to save her own life, she had to, let's say, respond with extreme prejudice.
13:57She now runs the largest cocaine operation on the Eastern Seaboard.
14:02Who's a bad girl?
14:03You are?
14:04Yes, you are!
14:06And, of course, Laura.
14:08She was on the show alongside Dua Lipa.
14:11Dua Lipa encouraged Laura to try acting, and now Laura is living out her dream, playing
14:16Simba in the touring company of The Lion King.
14:20Reviewers raved, I think one of the actors was a dog, and Hakuna Matoto, and when I went,
14:27Simba kept humping Pumbaa.
14:30Then there was Midge.
14:31Midge appeared with Ryan Reynolds.
14:34Today, Midge runs her own tattoo parlor, and her work is really something.
14:40It can be a little messy, but no one could be mad at Midge because she's too cute.
14:44Also, she makes her client sign a waiver.
14:48This is Bartleby.
14:50His appearance proved to be so captivating that he is now the subject of a new documentary
14:55by acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog.
14:57Behold the animal known as Bartleby.
15:02By day, he protects his owners by screaming at squirrels.
15:08By night, he frees his mind by drinking from the toilet of madness.
15:16This is Baxter.
15:18In 2024, he was held by people's sexiest man alive, Chris Evans.
15:23And today?
15:24Well, these days, Baxter spends most of his time just sitting around thinking about that
15:29moment.
15:29Because honestly, wouldn't you?
15:33Then there was Dakota, who was on the show with Daniel Radcliffe.
15:36Well, that night after the show, there was an incident with an electrical transformer backstage,
15:41and the two ended up switching bodies.
15:45Please help me.
15:46It's Daniel Radcliffe.
15:48I'm trapped in here, and I don't know where my body is.
15:50Anybody?
15:51Help!
15:55Oh, crap!
15:58Finally, there was Norbert.
16:00Norbert was the only dog to appear on the show three times.
16:04Unfortunately, during that time, Norbert stole about $40 million from the Late Show budget
16:09and won't tell anyone where he buried it.
16:12Well, that does it for Rescue Dog Rescue.
16:14I'm happy to say we were able to find homes for absolutely every dog that we presented for adoption.
16:20Bye-bye, my furry friends, and thanks for only occasionally peeing on me.
16:25I want to thank North Shore Animal League America.
16:28Go check them out.
16:30And thanks to all the stars who helped out with Rescue Dog Rescue.
16:34And, of course, thanks to the dogs.
16:36We couldn't have done it without you.
16:37It would have made absolutely no sense.
16:40We'll be right back with Christopher Nolan.
17:03Hey, welcome back, everybody!
17:05Ladies and gentlemen, my first guest tonight is the Oscar-winning producer, writer, and director
17:12of such films as The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer.
17:16Please welcome back to The Late Show, Christopher Nolan!
17:36Yes.
17:41Nice to see you again.
17:43Nice to be back.
17:44Last time we spoke was at Princeton at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Einstein's office.
17:49Yes.
17:50And here we are in the Ed Sullivan.
17:52Do you want to compare the vibes?
17:55I mean, the intellect is still here.
17:58You feel the waves of history coming off the walls in a slightly different way.
18:02Sure, sure.
18:02But no, that was a fun time.
18:04It was a really cool thing to be able to be there in Einstein's office talking about everything.
18:08Yeah, unbelievable.
18:09We took the Colbert bump right the way to the Oscars.
18:12You're welcome.
18:12Thank you very much for that.
18:13You're welcome.
18:14Anytime.
18:15There you go.
18:17Cheers.
18:18Cheers.
18:18Cheers.
18:19There you go.
18:20Okay, Oppenheimer, as you said, won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
18:25You chose to follow it up with just a small, not showy story.
18:30Yes.
18:32Just the bedrock of Western literature, the story of stories, The Odyssey.
18:39What was it about...
18:43I assume you're also a fan of the Iliad, but what is it about Homer?
18:47Why did you want to tackle this particular story?
18:50I mean, you're always looking for something that hasn't been done before.
18:54And Greek mythology, even though so many of us are familiar with it, you know, from when we're kids
18:59and the way in which it's the underpinnings of all stories, as you say, in Western literature.
19:04But it hadn't really been done on a big scale.
19:06I mean, I grew up with movies by greats like Ray Harryhausen and Clash of the Titans, things like that.
19:13But it hadn't really been done on a kind of a budget, big studio, you know, throw everything at the
19:18screen and see what sticks kind of way.
19:21And that's the kind of gap you're looking for as a filmmaker.
19:23It's like, how can we get in there and really try and bring something new for audiences?
19:27It's just one of the great adventure stories, and I really wanted to see it done justice.
19:32So we just sort of dove in.
19:34And the story itself has... and the Iliad have such depth behind them and implied depth.
19:42Basically, the Greek myths are all paying off in the Iliad and the Odyssey.
19:45A lot of scores are being settled between the gods with each other.
19:47And I know you don't want to give anything away about the film, but are there gods in it?
19:52Or is there any of the supernatural?
19:54Because Troy, Troy, like the movie Troy, it had none of the gods in it.
19:58Do you have any of the gods in it?
20:00I don't really want to give anything away.
20:02I mean, I know it's weird to talk about spoilers on a 3,000-year-old piece of literature.
20:08But a lot of the way, as you...
20:12New New Testament, has it got that Jesus guy in it?
20:14You got that Jesus guy in New Testament?
20:16Okay, Matt Damon plays the title character Odysseus.
20:20You've worked with him before in Interstellar, Oppenheimer.
20:23Those are both great roles, but supporting roles in that.
20:27Why'd you risk one on Damon?
20:29Why did you...
20:30Yes, he's talented. Yes, he's handsome. Yes, he's intelligent, but...
20:34We tried him out a couple of times.
20:35Okay, yeah.
20:36You know, just to see and everything.
20:39And no, I mean, look, the great thing about working with people
20:43who are just incredibly good at what they do, like Matt, is just one of the greats.
20:47I got to do a couple of movies with him, and then I got really that thrill
20:52of being able to call him up and say, how about Odysseus?
20:55And, you know, it's a one-word pitch. It's right there.
20:58And I warned him. I said, it's going to be very hard.
21:01And he's like, yeah, I know, I know, I know.
21:03I said, no, it's going to be very hard.
21:06He says it's the hardest film he's ever made.
21:08I think for all of us, it was an incredibly challenging movie in all the right ways.
21:13I mean, I like to say it was a nightmare in all the right ways.
21:16Right.
21:16It's just, it's a lot to take on.
21:18It's the Odyssey. It's the greatest epic in literature.
21:22And so it should be difficult.
21:25We did want to get out there and really try and do a lot of these things for real,
21:28really get out there on the seas, climb the mountains, go in the caves, all of that.
21:32You got all the gods to deal with.
21:34Oh, here you go.
21:35There you go.
21:38In one way or another, there's certain odds towards that.
21:42Would you be comfortable in revealing whether you shot this film in order, like in order of the story?
21:48Would you be, would you tell us that?
21:50Well, the story's written in a nonlinear way.
21:52It's the original kind of nonlinear narrative.
21:54You start, you know, kind of halfway through the story.
21:57He's telling a lot of the story to like the, in the Nausicaa's father's palace or something like that.
22:02Well, we're, what we're jumping off from is the Ithacus.
22:05We start in Ithaca.
22:06Okay.
22:07We start with the song of Odysseus.
22:09We start with this story.
22:10Everyone is sitting there going, okay, we know the Trojan War ended 10 years ago.
22:15Where is he?
22:16He hasn't come back.
22:17He left 20 years ago.
22:18And things are not altogether wonderful in his kingdom.
22:21Because Penelope's having to put off all these suitors who want to be the new king.
22:25Exactly.
22:25So Penelope's played by Anne Hathaway, who I've also worked with a couple of times before.
22:32Did you catch that Devil Wears Prada movie?
22:34I watched it last night.
22:36Yeah.
22:36It was fabulous.
22:37Very fantastic.
22:37With Emily Blunt as well and everything.
22:39Yeah, terrific.
22:40And her son is played by Tom Holland, who's also amazing.
22:45Who I've not worked with before, but would love to work with again.
22:49I mean, he's just an incredible talent, as everybody else but me knew before I sort of got into it
22:54with him.
22:54But he's so, so great.
22:56And they're, you know, holding the fort in Ithaca, fending off the suitors, the lead suitors played by Rob Pattinson,
23:03who I've also worked with before.
23:06And, yeah, so it really is a story about ultimately about homecoming, about can he get home.
23:13Wait, she was Catwoman.
23:13She was Catwoman.
23:14He was Spider-Man.
23:15He was the Batman.
23:17Like, if...
23:18And we have Jason Bourne as well.
23:19Oh, yeah.
23:20And Jason Bourne.
23:21Would we, like, are superheroes directly related to these sort of Greek heroes?
23:25Very directly.
23:27No, they are.
23:27I mean, I mean, they're the original, the original superheroes.
23:31And a lot of, I mean, even comic book culture, whether you're talking about Marvel or DC or all the
23:35rest, a lot of it comes pretty directly from the Homeric epics.
23:39And the thing about Homer is nobody knows if that was a person.
23:44You know, they don't know.
23:44I mean, Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas, maybe, of his time.
23:49I mean, nobody really knows who this person was or whether it was more than one person.
23:52We don't even know if Homer was Homer's name.
23:54Exactly.
23:55After all, Ovid was Ovid's middle name, so you never can tell.
23:59Oh, there you go.
23:59You're pulling rank again.
24:00But that's...
24:01Yes.
24:02I don't have to tell you.
24:04Oh, man, you don't have to tell me, because I wouldn't know what the hell you were saying.
24:07But...
24:09Uh-huh.
24:10I...
24:11Absolutely.
24:12I mean, the thing about Homer is, yeah, it's the marvel of its day.
24:16I mean, that's the thing.
24:17And so I think there's very directly this desire for us to feel or believe that gods could walk amongst
24:24us.
24:24And I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that.
24:29We have an unusual treat.
24:31Christopher Nolan and our friends at Universal, hello, Universal,
24:35have brought us a brand new trailer.
24:37No one's seen this, right?
24:39No.
24:39Absolutely not.
24:39Okay, for The Odyssey.
24:41Absolutely not.
24:42So...
24:46We're gonna roll this for you and for the people at home.
24:49And don't go anywhere, because we'll be right back right after this is over with more Christopher Nolan.
24:54Anything we need to set up here?
24:55Not if I've done my job right.
24:59Let's find out.
25:06Yvonne.
25:19Tell me what you remember.
25:23A wife.
25:29A son.
25:33Then what?
25:37We won the war.
25:45Help me go home.
25:51this is a household waiting for master
25:57i want you to choose me
26:01i think his king is coming back no he's not
26:10what would he do if he came back here and find all these suitors in his house
26:16you're pining me for a daddy you didn't even know like some sniffling pastor
26:23who's looking after your wife and son do you see my dad is coming home
26:31bringing vengeance
26:35bringing it all
26:37let's go
26:51i need everyone in this party dead
26:55i can still save them
26:59you're a man who needs to control his fate
27:05but you cannot control this
27:07that world is gone
27:13no one could stand between me and home
27:19and neither the gods
27:22keep us free
27:30i think it's asleep
27:51it uh it it appears you did your job right now an unbelievable cast uh besides damon uh anne hathaway
28:01tom holland robert pattinson
28:03charlis theron john leguizamo who who haven't we seen anybody you want to tell us about that's not in that
28:09we haven't seen uh lupita nyongo and we haven't seen zendaya uh
28:15corey hawkins just uh a ton of other talent i mean it's uh it's an incredible cast and they all
28:23they just work so hard for the movie and really deliver the goods for me i mean it really was
28:28a thrill to work with them all
28:29i think i caught a glimpse of fur
28:31in there
28:32is that odysseus's dog argos
28:35it is indeed
28:36wow which is one of the greatest moments in the whole story
28:39i it's no spoilers
28:41no spoilers
28:43no spoilers but yes it is one of the greatest moments in the story it's really one of the things
28:48that hooked me
28:49i'm a new dog owner
28:50came on
28:52yes thank you
28:54like new to dogs
28:56new to dogs i'd never had a dog growing up
28:58really
28:59didn't have a dog when my kids were young we denied that and as soon as they left for college
29:04we got a dog
29:04and uh
29:05and then i thought
29:07how do they feel about that
29:07they were a little a little bitter but uh
29:10but they love the dog too when they get to visit
29:13uh and uh
29:14i decided to do the odyssey because it is the ultimate it's the ultimate dog story
29:19um the film was shot entirely it's the first film shot entirely on imax cameras
29:24yes
29:24okay what does that mean to you as a director why a why'd you want to do that and what
29:28are the challenges of that
29:29i fell in love with imax film when i was about 16
29:32uh going to uh
29:35uh films at the museum of science and industry in chicago like documentaries that were shot on imax
29:39and i always felt like
29:40what if you you know told a giant hollywood story in this format
29:45so on the dark night i convinced the studio i convinced imax to let us try and do our action
29:50sequences which we did
29:51just the action scenes uh
29:53uh on on imax and then over the years
29:56i've tried to use the format kind of more and more
29:58um you know things like interstellar and oppenheim and everything we tried to do more and more of the film
30:03but what i always wanted to do was do the entire movie that way
30:06i couldn't do it because the cameras are so noisy
30:09as the the software solutions sort of filtering out camera noise got better
30:13i did tests with some of the stuff i'd shot with killian oppenheimer with imax cameras very close and he's
30:18speaking and we had adr'd it
30:20and i could uncover his original dialogue but he was shouting over the camera so it was the wrong performance
30:27and that's the problem is is what we needed was a way to get a camera get an imax camera
30:32that you can actually shoot the dialogue
30:34it could be as close as as we are and you could perform in front of it and so we
30:38challenged imax to do that we said we're doing the odyssey
30:41this is this is the story if ever there were a story where you want to do the whole thing
30:45on imax this is it
30:46so can you find a way to build an enclosure for the camera you know they build us new cameras
30:51they build us this box that you put the camera in
30:53i mean it's giant it weighs about 400 pounds but it silenced the camera so we could you know do
31:00very intimate scenes
31:01a new type of camera this was shot on brand new camera is this called the nolan now
31:06it is not um actually it's called the keely and it's named after uh my friend david keely who sadly
31:12passed
31:13uh just uh as we were finishing the dailies on this film before we edited it and he had been
31:19my imax mentor
31:20for you know almost 20 years uh and he's the guy who made so much of what we've done possible
31:25and uh proud to say that that he before he passed he was able to finish approving uh all of
31:31our last dailies
31:32and printing those and uh we miss him greatly but i'm thrilled um yep
31:39uh but i'm uh i'm absolutely thrilled uh that he's memorialized in the name of this this brand new camera
31:47which is it's i mean imax film is the highest quality imaging format that's ever been built
31:53well christopher thanks so much for being here always a pleasure to talk thank you
31:57the odyssey will be on theaters on july 17th
32:01christopher nolan everybody we'll be right back with dave roll
32:19welcome back safe
32:23my next guest is a 19-time grammy award-winning rock and roll hall of famer from foo fighters and
32:29nirvana
32:29please welcome back to the late show dave roll
32:35nice to see you again hey man how you been good
32:57uh foo fighters have been uh together for 31 years that's true okay
33:05was there a specific moment when you knew you were ready to start a new band after nirvana
33:13well yes there actually was there was when nirvana ended i wasn't sure what to do i didn't know if
33:21i
33:21wanted to continue playing music i i had it made me sad to think of of uh playing in another
33:29band
33:29um losing nirvana losing kurt was was a really uh really dark emotional experience and so i thought
33:38you know i just need to get my head together and i rented a car and drove around the ring
33:43of carry in
33:45ireland and i was out it's so gorgeous one of the most beautiful places in the world i was driving
33:50on
33:50this country road and there were like sheep and it was a great day and then the green rolling hills
33:56and all i wanted to do was disappear and as i was um driving down this this country road i
34:04see a
34:04hitchhiker and he had a kurt cobain t-shirt on and to me i thought okay this is the universe
34:15telling me
34:15you have to continue like you have to move on you have to go forward music has always been the
34:22love of
34:22my life it's helped me through some of my most difficult moments and um when i saw the kid with
34:30this with the kurt cobain t-shirt i thought okay i need to i need to keep going i have
34:36so much reverence
34:37and respect for the past but i need to have a future and that's kind of where it began well
34:46last year last year nirvana reunited for two performances fire aid uh fire aid benefit nelly
34:54and snl 50. yeah you guys don't do that very often no what is it like when when y'all
35:00get together to
35:02you know breathe life back into those songs well again you know i think sometimes when people think
35:08of bands they just think of instruments and songs and stuff but it really is it's this connection
35:13of people and life experience and relationships you know with other human beings and then you put on
35:19guitars and play music and and that translates your your love and respect and the relationship you have
35:25the other person really comes through the music so with nirvana it's like oh my god we went through some
35:30crazy stuff and uh and so when we get together to play it's a really it's a wild experience because
35:38when it's me and
35:40chris novaselich and pat smear when we sit down and like start into smells like teen spirit in a small
35:47room it's like dude it's it's nobody else makes that noise it sounds like smells like teen spirit and
35:54you're just like and we don't do it often and so when it does come around it's like a comet
36:00it's like this
36:00comet it's coming back around and you see it streak by and it's like
36:07it's great well foo fighters have a new album your favorite toy the band's 12 studio album
36:15how'd you land on the name of this album your favorite toy you know it's funny there's a song um
36:20that's
36:20called your favorite toy but when i first wrote it it was called for good and there's a line that
36:28says uh get back here that
36:30boy someone threw away your favorite toy for good and i'm like wow okay for good that's such a great
36:36name
36:37that has it but and like a week later i see the wicked movie comes out i'm like man what
36:42the damn
36:44yeah took it yeah you could have surfed that wave though you could have gotten right in on that
36:49i know i feel like people would have would have bought this thinking it was that or about that
36:54thinking it was this kind of that's true exactly foo fighters on tour this summer it's been 40 years since
37:01little you went out on tour because you were a teenager yeah the first time little you went on
37:06tour for the first time is is it more enjoyable now that you're not couch surfing big time no i
37:15mean
37:15as i said earlier you know it's those early years and those early experiences but room service like when
37:20i was here with my mom oh yeah that was wonderful years ago my mother wrote a book years ago
37:25and um she
37:26and i sat on the couch and and did an interview here at the at the studio and um and
37:34you know my mother
37:36was such an incredible person she was a public school teacher for 35 years
37:45and she was she was such a brilliant kind compassionate empathetic altruistic
37:53incredible funny charming sweet just the coolest the coolest person i've ever met in my life
38:00she was a teacher at my high school and i wasn't good at high school
38:06i wasn't good at elementary school either actually we brought my report cards when we were here anyway
38:11but she was so cool that um she realized i was just terrible at school she also realized i wasn't
38:20like a
38:20complete um uh i'm not going to say the word but she she understood like okay there's something you'll
38:29be able to figure your life out she thought she had faith in me that i could do that yeah
38:32so i left
38:33to go on tour when i was 17 years old and it was basically me asking my mother um hey
38:39i have an
38:40opportunity to tour the world i want to leave school and she said you should go do that because you
38:47suck at
38:47school and here we are 40 years later well congratulations on finding the thing you don't
38:54suck at thanks man stick around for a performance by the foo fighters it's dave growl everybody thank you dave
39:04we'll be right back
39:12performing caught in the echo from their new album your favorite toy ladies and gentlemen foo fighters
39:28cheers
39:31this is just a chance
39:34i'm a broken rocker sister
39:37this is an evaluation
39:40Of my own insulation
39:43But this is not a chance
39:47This is a conversation
39:50I've got another proposition
39:53Of another one condition
39:59I've got the echo of it
40:05From side to side to side to side
40:18From side to side to side to side
40:21To side to side to side to side
40:24To what, to what, to what, to what
40:27Here comes the clash
40:31One with the two dimensions
40:33I'm moving on the picture
40:37Like me for an ascension
40:40I wanna take it back
40:43Nobody here is truly free
40:46This is an answer picture
40:49From part of my infusion
40:56I've got the echo of it
41:02From side to side to side to side to side
41:09I've been caught in the echo
41:11I've been caught in the echo
41:15To say to side to side to side
41:18To what, to what, to what, to what
41:23I've been caught in the echo
41:29Sometimes I'm just trying to let go
41:32Sometimes I'm just trying to let go
41:55Some things you can't define
41:58Some things you can't divide
42:01Sometimes you can't decide
42:04Do I? Do I?
42:08Some things you can't define
42:11Some things you can't define
42:14Sometimes you can't decide
42:17Do I? Do I?
42:21Some things you can't define
42:24Some things you can't define
42:27Sometimes you can't decide
42:31Do I, do I, something you can't define, something you can't define, sometimes you can't decide, do I, do I.
43:11Do I, do I, do I, something you can't define, sometimes you can't decide, do I, do I, something you
43:26can't define, sometimes you can't decide, do I, do I, something you can't define, sometimes you can't decide, do I,
43:30do I, something you can't define, sometimes you can't decide, do I, do I, something you can't define, sometimes you
43:30can't decide, do I, do I, do I, something you can't define, sometimes you can't decide, do I, do I,
43:30do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I,
43:30do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I,
43:30do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, do I,
43:30do I, do I, do I, do I, do
43:31Please, sometimes you stand your side.
43:34Enjoy.
43:35Enjoy.
43:47Thank you, Dave.
