00:01Authorities confirmed a second fatality from Monday's car-ramming attack in Leipzig
00:06as investigations continue to uncover a motive.
00:09An explosion at a fireworks plant in the central Chinese province of Hunan
00:14has killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more, according to state media reports.
00:20The European Commission will gradually eliminate the use of Chinese-made inverters
00:24to protect critical energy infrastructure from possible cyber threats.
00:30People in the eastern German city of Leipzig held a candlelight vigil
00:34to mourn victims of Monday's car-ramming attack which killed two people and critically injured two others.
00:41The driver, a 33-year-old Leipzig-born German man, was arrested at the scene
00:46and officials said his motivations remain unclear.
00:50The car careered from a major square in the Old Town, down a busy pedestrian shopping zone,
00:56traveling hundreds of meters.
00:59Prosecutors have opened a case on suspicion of two counts of murder
01:02and at least two counts of attempted murder.
01:05Police said late on Monday there was no evidence to suggest that the incident was politically or religiously motivated.
01:13According to German media, the suspect had already been known to police,
01:17albeit not for relevant offenses.
01:21Officials say they believe he acted alone, adding that he represents no further danger to the city.
01:30An explosion at a fireworks plant in the central Chinese province of Hunan killed at least 21 people
01:36and injured more than 60 others, according to reports on state-run media on Tuesday.
01:42Aerial footage showed white smoke still billowing above certain areas of the site,
01:47even after firefighters had been fighting the flames for hours.
01:51The fires burned several buildings down to ashes, while many others collapsed or suffered severe damage.
01:58Nearly 500 rescue workers were deployed to the scene to extinguish the blaze,
02:03carry out search and rescue operations, and evacuate residents in close proximity to the plant.
02:09Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blast,
02:12but have preliminarily detained the person in charge of the company.
02:16Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered a full probe into the incident to be carried out diligently and expeditiously,
02:23and instructed local officials to make every possible effort to save lives.
02:28Authorities warn the death toll is likely to climb as rescue operations continue.
02:36The EU's Trade Commissioner is set to meet his U.S. counterpart on Tuesday in Paris amid rising tensions over
02:45tariffs.
02:46EU Trade Chief Maros Chetovic is scheduled to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer
02:53a few days after the U.S. President said a 25 percent tariff would be placed on cars imported from
03:01the EU.
03:01Sources told Euronews, however, that Tuesday's meeting was planned prior to Trump's latest tariff threat.
03:09The move would be in breach of a U.S.-EU trade deal that was agreed last summer, which caps U
03:15.S. tariffs on EU goods at 15 percent.
03:18It led to the European Commission reiterating on Monday that if the U.S. takes measures that are inconsistent with
03:25the deal,
03:26all options would remain open.
03:28Trump's threats followed criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the U.S.'s stance on Iran,
03:35and came as Washington announced it would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.
03:47U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to slap 25 percent tariffs on EU cars is politically motivated and aimed squarely
03:56at German carmakers.
03:57German MEP Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament's Trade Committee, told Euronews on Monday.
04:03This is a political decision. He is really angry against Germany. We just heard it. And I'm convinced that in
04:16this context,
04:17he also targeting specifically German car manufacturers. And this will perhaps lead to an extra tariff volume from around 15
04:29billion.
04:29So that's really, and of course, there are no legal or no economic reasons for that. This is really politically
04:39against Germany.
04:42Lange's remarks come days after Trump announced the tariffs, following criticism of the U.S. war in Iran by German
04:49Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
04:50The U.S. President has accused several European countries of refusing to contribute to Washington's military operations against Iran.
04:59If enacted this week, the measures would breach the 15 percent ceiling agreed under a trade deal struck in July
05:062025 between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
05:11Lange expressed doubts about the agreement, which was reached after weeks of trade tensions between Europe and the U.S.,
05:19following Trump's return to power and the launch of a nationalist trade agenda.
05:24I'm not sure that we can really go on Lange said of the deal.
05:32Armenia on Monday hosted the eighth meeting of the European political community, an informal, all-inclusive format that began soon
05:42after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
05:44German Chancellor Friedrich Merz currently at the centre of a geopolitical controversy after declaring that Iran had humiliated the United
05:54States in the war was the most notable absentee.
05:58Meanwhile, his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney's attendance was the first time a non-European leader took part in an EPC
06:07meeting.
06:08Carney defended a rules-based global order anchored in freedom, rule of law, democracy and pluralism.
06:16Now, we have to actively take on the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.
06:21We know nostalgia is not a strategy, but we don't think that we're destined to submit to a more transactional,
06:27insular and brutal world.
06:29Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also present and held several bilateral meetings with European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir
06:40Starmer.
06:40He urged leaders to avoid the example set by the U.S. and oppose any sanctions relief for Russia.
06:48Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the summit, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen met with Starmer to discuss London's plan
06:56to participate in the €90 billion support loan for Ukraine that Brussels adopted last month.
07:07The European Commission will gradually eliminate the use of Chinese-made inverters in EU-funded energy projects, a step aimed
07:15at protecting critical energy infrastructure from possible cyber threats that could trigger from power outages.
07:21The move follows warnings from analysts that Europe's heavy reliance on Chinese-made solar inverters could pose risks to Europe's
07:30power grid stability, especially as Europe relies more on renewable energy.
07:35The findings indicated that certain countries could, in a worst-case scenario, undermine European energy infrastructure, potentially even triggering blackouts,
07:44an EU official said, referring to China, Iran, North Korea and Russia.
07:50Inverters are relatively small but crucial components in modern energy systems.
07:55They play a critical role in converting and regulating the flow of power from renewable sources, such as wind and
08:02solar, as well as storage systems.
08:04While Chinese manufacturers currently dominate the global inverter market with an estimated 80% share,
08:11the Commission considers that sufficient alternative supply capacity exists among producers in countries such as Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and
08:20the United States.
