00:00:11As a kid, it baffled me how God could know so much.
00:00:17Not only past and present, but the future as well.
00:00:24Sunday evenings, my dad read to us from his Bible.
00:00:28The stories were beautiful, austere, terrifying.
00:00:36And one loomed over all others.
00:00:39The story of Abraham.
00:00:42God sends a man to slaughter his own son.
00:00:48Only to stop him perilously close to the act.
00:00:52To reveal it's all been a ruse.
00:00:54Dee Dee, it's me.
00:00:56To me, that story was and always will be not Abraham's story, but Isaac's.
00:01:03This boy must grow with the image of his own father, poised above him.
00:01:10Without it ever explained why he's the victim.
00:01:14You gonna be all right in there?
00:01:15I always knew I would devote my life to clarity.
00:01:21I would save the world's uncomprehending victims.
00:01:28What I never knew is that when dealing with matters of life and death,
00:01:34as policemen inevitably do,
00:01:39there's no way around the question of God.
00:01:43In fact, there are moments when there's nothing else that can be thought of to say but why.
00:01:52And like Isaac found,
00:01:55there's only silence in response.
00:02:02Lonely.
00:02:05Indeterminate silence.
00:02:08Hey, you all right?
00:02:12Hey, stop walking.
00:02:14I said stop.
00:02:17We called an ambulance.
00:02:19Be out here real quick.
00:02:22Is that your blood on you?
00:02:25Damn it, answer me.
00:02:28Hey!
00:02:29I need to see your hands in the air slowly.
00:02:32Do it now.
00:02:33There's two of us back here.
00:02:35Man, let me know there's two of us.
00:02:37Hello.
00:02:38Okay, you heard that.
00:02:39Let's bring up your hands.
00:02:41He's on up around.
00:02:45All right, kid.
00:02:45My partner's coming around to get a better look at you.
00:02:52Tommy?
00:02:53Les, it's Tommy Spencer.
00:02:56Is it his blood?
00:02:58Well, he better hope not.
00:03:02Okay, Tommy.
00:03:04I just need you to please turn around for me.
00:03:06Okay, Tommy?
00:03:08We ain't gonna hurt you.
00:03:09Just please turn around.
00:03:13Tommy?
00:03:26Uh, just hold still.
00:03:29Okay, Tommy?
00:03:30We're gonna figure all this out.
00:03:34Okay?
00:03:34Just, uh...
00:03:36Just hold still.

00:05:35Mm-hmm
00:05:47This story has many beginnings
00:05:52We go back six months
00:05:54To the front end of spring
00:05:57Here you go
00:05:58I think there's gonna be two of us
00:06:00I bet you know the menu
00:06:02Nothing doing at the Vance
00:06:04I'm off this morning
00:06:05I sure like your ribbon
00:06:07Oh, it's yellow
00:06:08I can see that
00:06:09No, like in the song
00:06:11Tie a yellow ribbon
00:06:12Away
00:06:13It's Tony Orlando and Dawn
00:06:15It was my favorite growing up
00:06:17You don't mean it
00:06:18My man got up from McAllister yesterday
00:06:21He's meeting me here
00:06:22Well, why didn't you go down there
00:06:24And see him right when he was released?
00:06:25He thought it'd be better this way
00:06:27I waited up here
00:06:29All by yourself
00:06:30While he travels half the state?
00:06:32Yes
00:06:33Bless your heart
00:06:36Does this man love you?
00:06:38I don't know
00:06:39What do you mean you don't know?
00:06:41I think it's him
00:06:42You think?
00:06:43We never met before
00:06:44Should I point you out?
00:06:45He knows I'm wearing this ribbon
00:06:47I'll just scoot out of your way
00:07:00You Ainsley?
00:07:01Yes
00:07:04Weren't you gonna look up at me?
00:07:13No, do
00:07:14No, I can't do this
00:07:17What?
00:07:20Hey
00:07:23Hey
00:07:26Now, how am I gonna feel you run off on me so quick?
00:07:28I need you to give this a chance
00:07:31You leave now
00:07:32It'll be the end of me
00:07:34Now, come on back inside
00:07:35Please
00:07:36I'm begging you
00:07:41What?
00:07:54I ain't had you on my mind every day for six months for you to scare me so quick
00:07:58No, I won't leave
00:07:59I ain't gonna let you
00:08:01Don't
00:08:02All right, then
00:08:05Some menu for me?
00:08:06Yes
00:08:12I can't get used to all this
00:08:15What's the weirdest thing about me being, uh, choices
00:08:19You know, we got choices in life
00:08:23I think one of the things prison's about is
00:08:26It's taking choices away from folks that ain't capable of making the right ones
00:08:30I ain't looked at it that way
00:08:32I reckon you ain't had to
00:08:37So this here is Kingfisher
00:08:39Yeah, it's just like you said
00:08:43Quiet and friendly
00:08:44Lots of oil pumps
00:08:45Lots of oil pumps
00:08:49Different than McAllister
00:08:51There's no oil pumps in McAllister
00:08:54I still wish I could have seen it
00:08:56No, you don't
00:08:58It's where you lived
00:09:00All them letters come from there
00:09:01All them letters come from me
00:09:03You know what I mean
00:09:05You know what I mean
00:09:07I do
00:09:09You know, me and her had a talk for you to come in here
00:09:11Is that right?
00:09:13You make sure and treat this and write
00:09:14Okay
00:09:16She deserves it, waiting on you like she did
00:09:18I can pick them and she's a keeper
00:09:20An angel from heaven
00:09:22The Lord done sent her down here to watch over you
00:09:25I need that
00:09:26I don't know
00:09:28That boy in our line
00:09:29That's where a party you ain't gonna tell me
00:09:31Y'all are early
00:09:33Ain't seen the sound, have you?
00:09:34Ain't been in yet
00:09:35You two sit on down
00:09:36Hi, Angely
00:09:37Hi
00:09:38I'll be with you in a minute
00:09:40All right now
00:09:41Do you two want to order anything?
00:09:43Uh, give me the cowman's breakfast here
00:09:45How do you like your eggs?
00:09:52Scrambled, I guess
00:09:54And for you?
00:09:55I can't eat
00:09:56You gotta eat something
00:09:57I'm too frazzled
00:09:58Come on now
00:09:59How do you like your eggs?
00:10:03I'm fried
00:10:04So two eggs
00:10:05Fried it is
00:10:07Sunny side up
00:10:08Hey, just the way my boy likes them
00:10:11But don't get me started talking about him
00:10:14Oh goodness
00:10:15I'll be back with your food
00:10:19She's lonely
00:10:20Yeah, I can see that
00:10:24I gotta be at work in 20 minutes
00:10:28I'm sorry I couldn't get off
00:10:30I lean my managers real strict
00:10:32That's all right
00:10:35It's just
00:10:37I've been waiting a long time for this
00:10:40Me too

00:10:47You do
00:10:49I do
00:10:52But I'll meet you when you get off
00:10:55And I want you to take me somewhere tonight
00:10:57All right

00:11:11We're together now
00:11:12Yes
00:11:14Thank God
00:11:17We're together
00:11:23So you found religion, too
00:11:25Yes, sir
00:11:26Well, it's neither one way or the other with me, religion
00:11:30If Christ died for my sins, I sure as hell ain't seen any of the benefits
00:11:34But you get satisfaction praying, so be it
00:11:37Yes, sir
00:11:39So why Kingfisher?
00:11:41There's a girl up here
00:11:43You knew her before you went in?
00:11:46I met through a magazine
00:11:48You see her yet?
00:11:50Oh, this morning
00:11:51Well, sort of a blind date
00:11:53I guess
00:11:55My wife and I met on a blind date
00:11:58You know, getting involved real quick after doing time can be a very serious thing
00:12:01I know
00:12:02Particularly with your kind of background
00:12:04I know that
00:12:06What's your name?
00:12:08Ainsley
00:12:11Ainsley, Ainsley
00:12:12Ainsley Dupree
00:12:15Works over at the Reds
00:12:16That's right
00:12:17Hell, I used to work with her daddy
00:12:20Really?
00:12:21He was foreman at the pipe yard during the boom
00:12:23She told you how he died?
00:12:25No, actually
00:12:26When the yard closed down, he'd become a tool pusher
00:12:29He got caught in a rig fire
00:12:31Dennis?
00:12:32We need more of these
00:12:34In a minute
00:12:35Burned alive along with three other guys
00:12:37She ain't said a thing about it
00:12:39He was a son of a bitch to work for
00:12:42Hard as nails
00:12:43Real religious too, it might interest you
00:12:46See, that was the joke
00:12:48He talked about hell so much
00:12:50He went that way
00:12:54You know fire?
00:12:56I get it
00:12:58She seemed alright though
00:13:00Homespun, reliable
00:13:02They make a good burger over there
00:13:05So, now, how's the job situation?
00:13:08Yeah, I just come in town today
00:13:11Any special skills?

00:13:44What's it like for your wife?
00:13:45Well, she's always kept her maternity clothes
00:13:48I bet

00:14:03As long as she'll have me
00:14:05She agreed to that
00:14:08She agreed to let me stay there
00:14:10Meaning?
00:14:13Meaning she agreed to let me stay there
00:14:15Is this the address you wrote down here?
00:14:18Yes, sir
00:14:21Okay, Jack
00:14:23We're gonna put you in our electronic monitoring program
00:14:30You'll be wearing this device around your ankle at all times
00:14:34Now, whenever you progress beyond 100 feet of the home
00:14:36We get a signal here at the station
00:14:38Alerting us that you've crossed the boundaries of your parole
00:14:42I don't know
00:14:42I don't know if I'm gonna have to do no monitoring program
00:14:45You got four years, took off your sentence
00:14:48Yeah
00:14:49Consider yourself lucky
00:14:51I consider myself blessed
00:14:53I'll call it what you will
00:14:55This is not to confine you
00:14:56This is just to monitor you
00:15:03Well, it's me and Ainsley we're gonna go out tonight
00:15:06We don't get to her house till the morning
00:15:08We'll need to get this on your ankle right away, though
00:15:11We'll know where you are tonight at all times
00:15:14Matter of fact, we'll always know where you are
00:15:17Well, I need to know where a church is in town
00:15:19All right, well, it should be easy enough
00:15:21You can pick and choose
00:15:23Unless you're a Mormon or a Jew
00:15:29Hello

00:15:58So I can get home

00:16:11He ain't in prison
00:16:13So he was in prison
00:16:14Well, I don't know, Janice
00:16:16It was yet

00:16:32Well, I guess you'd know
00:16:35Uh-huh

00:16:39I want to know what that means
00:16:43I'm sorry
00:16:44It don't mean nothing
00:16:47Well, you can have whatever opinion you want

00:17:12I ain't gonna be in in the morning
00:17:14What do you mean?
00:17:16I mean I got some business to take care of
00:17:18What kind of business?
00:17:20What kind of business is my business?
00:17:22Ow!
00:17:22It's my business if ain't nobody here

00:20:30That's all you gotta do.
00:20:35Now, whatever you've seen tonight,
00:20:38wherever you've been, it's over.
00:20:41But we can't figure out where all this blood come from,
00:20:44and if the person is still alive, maybe we can help them.

00:21:15Good boy, Tom.
00:21:19Good boy.
00:21:23Les.
00:21:25Okay, you and Bobby got the left shoulder.
00:21:28Get it, Bobby?
00:21:29Stay on the radio.
00:21:32Stay on the radio!
00:21:33He didn't want to call the state?
00:21:35Nope.
00:21:35I'm sick of feeling sorry for this kid.
00:21:37What's that supposed to mean?
00:21:38I mean, why ain't we calling the state?
00:21:40The kid's half crazy.
00:21:41Sam's got his reasons.
00:21:42Yeah? What are they?
00:21:43Glenn, what do you want from me?
00:21:44I'm trying to get him right there.
00:21:50I'm trying to get him right there.
00:21:51I'm trying to get him right there.
00:21:52Keep with it.
00:21:54Don't catch him right here.
00:21:56It's a heavy!
00:22:03Tom, what have you got there?
00:22:06Tom.
00:22:09Tom.
00:22:10Tom.
00:22:13God damn it.
00:22:14Somebody help me.
00:22:16Tom.
00:22:17It's all right now.
00:22:18Easy, Tom.
00:22:20Let it go, Tom.
00:22:21Easy, Tom.
00:22:23Hold it.
00:22:27Come on, Tom.
00:22:28Come on, Tom.
00:22:31Come on, Tom.
00:22:32It's okay, Tom.
00:22:34Oh, damn.
00:22:36All right.
00:22:38All right.
00:22:40Les, you get him back the car.
00:22:43And have a doctor meet us at the station.
00:22:45What is it?
00:22:47God damn it, can't you do a single thing I ask
00:22:49without pestering me with questions?
00:22:51Come on.
00:22:57All right, this is it.
00:23:00You boys mark off this whole area.
00:23:03It's out here in the water.
00:23:04What is it?
00:23:08What do you got?
00:23:11Jet!
00:23:14Jet!
00:23:16Come on.
00:23:17Give us a hand over here.
00:23:21You know.
00:23:22You don't marry me after spending all my time in the house.
00:23:25No, Jack.
00:23:27Hey, look out there.
00:23:28Ain't this beautiful?
00:23:31Yes.
00:23:34Well, thank you, Easley.
00:23:36Let's get out.
00:23:47I spent a lot of time as a child on this lake.
00:23:50Know what else?
00:23:52What?
00:23:52My mama swears I was conceived that year.
00:23:55What?
00:23:56Her and my daddy used to come up here all week once.
00:23:59One time in their senior year it happened.
00:24:04What you mean?
00:24:05They got married to have me proper.
00:24:08I think that's where birth happens.
00:24:09Not in some hospital.
00:24:11Yeah.
00:24:12I was born right here.
00:24:20My parole officer told me how your daddy died.
00:24:23I did?
00:24:25Why you never mentioned it?
00:24:27Me and my daddy never got along.
00:24:28She would.
00:24:35I met the preacher today.
00:24:38The preacher?
00:24:39A preacher.
00:24:42Yeah, he seemed real eager to help me out.
00:24:45Good.
00:24:46You don't go to church?
00:24:48You never wrote about it in your letters?
00:24:50No.
00:24:53What else did your parole officer say?
00:24:56He says it ain't gonna be easy me finding work.
00:25:00He says lots of folks is moving away.
00:25:03But I'll find something.
00:25:05I promise, Ainsley.
00:25:07Jack, I know you will.
00:25:12Jack?
00:25:15Yes?
00:25:22Will you tell me why he was in prison?
00:25:27Moving on with that, Ainsley.
00:25:28But that was the letters.
00:25:32You afraid I won't love you?
00:25:35As far as you and me concerned.
00:25:38I ain't never been to prison.
00:25:41If you hadn't been to prison, we'd have never met.
00:25:48I reckon not.
00:25:50So?
00:25:54Can I kiss you now?
00:25:58Yes.
00:26:01Here I come.
00:26:03Oh, God.
00:26:17What was that?
00:26:18It was timber.
00:26:21I ain't done that in a long time.
00:26:25Want to do it again?
00:26:27I do.
00:26:44What's your favorite part of me?
00:26:46I don't know.
00:26:49Tell me, and I'll tell you.
00:26:58Your chest.
00:27:09Your most beautiful part's your eyes.
00:27:13My parole officer said so.
00:27:15He's seen you over at the Reds.
00:27:18What?
00:27:25There's something I ain't told you in the letters.
00:27:30What?
00:27:34One of them's glass.
00:27:39One of your eyes?
00:27:43Which?
00:27:43This one.
00:27:47Why?
00:27:48It got cut out when I was 12.
00:27:51Me and one of my friends was playing with an electric knife.
00:27:55It don't look glass at all.
00:27:57It ain't supposed to.
00:28:01For near two years, I wore a patch,
00:28:03because my daddy said if God wanted an eye in there,
00:28:07he wouldn't let the real one get cut out.
00:28:12You wore a patch.
00:28:14And didn't have nothing in there.
00:28:17What changed his mind?
00:28:20When he died.
00:28:24My mama said, I'm tired of looking at you like that.
00:28:29So she carried me down to Oklahoma City and got me one of these.
00:28:34The only time I've ever been there.
00:28:39I'm gonna take care of you.
00:28:42I know.
00:28:45Can you marry me?
00:28:48Yes.
00:29:00Can you marry me?
00:29:02Oh, my God.
00:29:04I know it's quick.
00:29:05You don't got anything in there.
00:29:06No, Jack.
00:29:07I will.
00:29:09I will marry you.
00:29:14I want us to have children, Angley.
00:29:17A family.
00:29:17Yes.
00:29:18I owe the Lord for setting me free.
00:29:20Jack.
00:29:21I owe him.
00:29:24It's the most important thing.
00:29:26Children.
00:29:34You all give us some room now.
00:29:36Everybody out but less.
00:29:39I'll get the tape on.
00:29:41No, that ain't necessary.
00:29:43But we're...
00:29:43Get a notebook.
00:29:46You're enough already without us ever move being sucked up by a video camera.
00:29:51Good night.
00:29:54Good night.
00:29:54Hey, kiddo.
00:29:57Doctor says you're gonna...
00:29:59You're all right.
00:30:03You're safe here, you know that.
00:30:06Tom?
00:30:08You know you're safe?
00:30:12Now, Tom.
00:30:13I gotta ask you something.
00:30:16You just nod, yes or no, but I gotta ask you.
00:30:21Did you do that to this person?
00:30:24All right.
00:30:25All right.
00:30:26I know you didn't.
00:30:29Did you see it happen?
00:30:34Did you know that...
00:30:36Huh?
00:30:37All right.
00:30:38All right.
00:30:40So, the first time you met was tonight.
00:30:47Now, what about the person done it?
00:30:50Did you know him?
00:30:54Was it a man?
00:30:57And you didn't know him?
00:31:01Had you ever seen him before?
00:31:10Did...
00:31:12All right.
00:31:12All right.
00:31:13That's all right, Tom.
00:31:14Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:31:16It's all right, Tom.
00:31:17That's fine for now.
00:31:19That's just fine.
00:31:20Get the mug books.
00:31:21And, uh, someone get his aunt on the phone.
00:31:24Uh, we're just gonna bring some books in here.
00:31:27And then this'll all be over.
00:31:30You done good.
00:31:32We're gonna figure all this out.
00:31:36You done good.
00:31:40Here it is.
00:31:43Here's the kitchen.
00:31:46I got a microwave.
00:31:48And, uh, four burners.
00:31:50Plus this toaster oven.
00:31:52And, uh, down here's the real oven.
00:31:55Up here's all the dishes.
00:31:59Yeah.
00:32:01You keep a clean house.
00:32:02Yeah.
00:32:03And, uh,
00:32:06through here's the bedroom.
00:32:09Well, now, uh...
00:32:12Tonight I might ought to stay on the sofa.
00:32:14What the heck?
00:32:15Ainsley, keep away.
00:32:20Ainsley.
00:32:23Ainsley.
00:32:24All right now.
00:32:25All right.
00:32:26All right.
00:32:28No, no, no.
00:32:29That's it.
00:32:30No more.
00:32:40You sure as aggressive as somebody made love ever.
00:32:42That's why I'm aggressive.
00:32:47Listen.
00:32:48I've been locked up for three years.
00:32:50I feel that way too.
00:32:53But what happens between a man and a woman is sacred.
00:32:57It can't be took lightly.
00:32:59All right.
00:33:02You gotta do everything proper.
00:33:09Everything.
00:33:11That the glory of the Lord has written on it.
00:33:14No.
00:33:16No.
00:33:17No.
00:33:20No.
00:33:31There's a better place.
00:33:33No, no, my knock on to bed.
00:33:34Ten, three o'clock.
00:33:35are? Yeah. When did he say him and his daddy coming home? He didn't say. Tom, where do you go
00:33:45when you go off five and you're 14 years old? Will you answer me, please? You think it makes me
00:33:54happy around here having another kid to take care of? Well, what do you want me to do? Talk with
00:34:01me
00:34:01sometimes. I got no one to talk with. My sister's gone. I don't never see my
00:34:06husband. Stay home tonight. Chips is on the cable and Knight Rider. You like in cars
00:34:15so much. I'd rather go out. I'll go with you. Then you're grounded. How's that? I'll microwave us some
00:34:27popcorn and we'll look at the cable. I'm leaving now. Tom, I said we're spending the
00:34:33evening together and I meant it. Boy, mind me. I mean it. I said mind me. Come back in this
00:34:43house right now or don't come back at all. Come back in right now or don't come back at
00:34:49all. Tom? Tom? Tom? Answer the phone, Will. Hello? Hello, Will. Sorry about the hour. It's
00:35:13a visit with the wife. Oh, same. Well, y'all sorted out. Listen, uh, you mind coming down to the
00:35:21station? What's up? Well, it's a little complicated. We got a body, Will. And, uh, looks like Claire Spencer's
00:35:32boy got wrapped up in it somehow. Will? I'll be right there.
00:36:02Hey. Okay. Where you been? I was worried crazy. I got a job. They let me look for...
00:36:20Hill. Yeah, home for the night. Alrighty. Go back. Where? The DX station. We both work on the highway now.
00:36:31Doing what?
00:36:32Oh, mechanic. I worked all day. I changed the transmission, rebuilt two alternators. One of them was a Honda.
00:36:41That's great, Jack. Are you all right? Reds is closing down.
00:36:47What? Reds don't close down. They do if nobody's buying burgers. It may take a while, but I'll find something
00:36:57else.
00:36:57Me and Janet's gonna start looking this weekend. Why? Why? Hey, I just said I got a job. We'll be
00:37:08fine.
00:37:12No, Jack. I started my period today. Well, you don't gotta say it outright like that.
00:37:19I'm sorry. It's a natural thing. I told the preacher to bring your church in some day.
00:37:28Why you told them that? Why did I keep asking about you? I ain't been since I was 14.
00:37:38Ainsley, I want a Christian home. It can be just as Christian as you like. I just don't want to
00:37:42go to church.
00:37:48Ainsley, things are going so good, me getting this job and everything. Going to church is the only time I
00:37:54can leave here except for work now. I want you with me.
00:38:03All right. Who's it? Yes. I love you.
00:38:24Hey, Tommy.
00:38:30New shoes?
00:38:34So, they just hand me down.
00:38:38Your cousin?
00:38:39Yeah.
00:38:41Listen to me. Who else, right? You out in the car?
00:38:46Oh, you all alone?
00:38:48Yeah.
00:38:50Hey, how's your aunt?
00:38:53Fine.
00:38:53She's worried about you. She said you ain't even coming to church lately.
00:38:59No.
00:39:00You'd come to our church. I'd bring you.
00:39:03No.
00:39:04I don't think so.
00:39:07Lord help us.
00:39:10Is this gonna be all for you?
00:39:11Yeah.
00:39:12You want some beef jerky? How about a couple job records?
00:39:14Let me show you this.
00:39:21What do you think?
00:39:26Well...
00:39:28Nothing else for you then?
00:39:30No.
00:39:31Slush puppy?
00:39:32Cooley?
00:39:35Slim Jim?
00:39:37You okay?
00:39:43I'm who's that lady.
00:40:06I don't know.
00:40:06Is she going to church with you?
00:40:08Sunday be the third week.
00:40:13So married life's alright?
00:40:16Couldn't be better.
00:40:19Wish I could say the same.
00:40:24I'm sorry.
00:40:25It's strange times in these parts.
00:40:29They say ain't been this kind of migration out since the Dust Bowl.
00:40:34Yeah, most everyone we service at the station's passing through.
00:40:38Don't live here.
00:40:40Sometimes I think the reason she want a kid so bad is to have something to do with her time.
00:40:45You know?
00:40:47That's mighty tragic.
00:40:49Not that I don't want a child, hell.
00:40:51I'd love a son.
00:40:54You and Ainsley want a family?
00:40:57Ain't nothing more important to me.
00:40:59Alright, I reckon. That's right.
00:41:00I just...
00:41:03You're a lucky man to have a second chance.
00:41:05I know that.
00:41:07I think me and her are going to get a separation over this.
00:41:11That's awful.
00:41:12You ain't kidding.
00:41:14That's all we talk about anymore.
00:41:16I'm tired of taking the blame.
00:41:18I'm sick of playing defense, you know?
00:41:21Yeah.
00:41:26It's...
00:41:31I want to hear this.
00:41:34Oh, say.
00:41:35I may be doing that spot check on you here in the next couple of weeks.
00:41:39You keep saying that.
00:41:40It'll happen.
00:41:41I'm hoping to get your wife to borrow me up a burger.
00:41:44Over them closing down Reds.
00:41:46Okay.
00:41:48You believe that?
00:41:49Even Reds went and turned his back on us.
00:41:56Oh.
00:42:01You know what I think making love is?
00:42:03What?
00:42:04It's prayer.
00:42:06You make love proper.
00:42:09Prayer floats up away from it.
00:42:12There's no prayer more beautiful to God than what we've just done.
00:42:17Believe that?
00:42:19I believe I've never been happier than right now.
00:42:24Hmm.
00:42:25I get restless around the house.
00:42:28Without work.
00:42:30I miss you.
00:42:32But you come home and hold me.
00:42:37You make love.
00:42:39You cradle me like you do.
00:42:43I feel like there's nothing left in this world I could possibly want.
00:42:47I wonder if you need your touch.
00:42:54Jake.
00:42:59Can I tell you something?
00:43:02Yes.
00:43:09Anson?
00:43:12I don't think I'm leaving God.
00:43:15That's all right.
00:43:17It is?
00:43:19Just ain't found him yet.
00:43:22He's in your life.
00:43:25Just can't see him.
00:43:27Don't nobody see God?
00:43:29We see what he do.
00:43:32That's what faith is.
00:43:35How do I get faith?
00:43:39Just gotta let go.
00:43:44But, Ainsley.
00:43:48You got goodness, ain't it?
00:43:51Whether you believe in it or not, it's close to God as near anyone I'm at.
00:43:59I love you.
00:44:02I mean that.
00:44:04For an angel like you.
00:44:08He's there.
00:44:11I hope so.
00:44:14Make him up with me again, Ainsley.
00:44:18All the blood's off him.
00:44:20When he still ain't spoke a word, he's locked himself in his room.
00:44:24When do you have to go to work?
00:44:26Got the day off.
00:44:28My husband called a while ago.
00:44:30Him and Jimmy's gonna be at the yard all day.
00:44:33You reckon if this child had a man figure around for one day of his life, he'd be so odd
00:44:37and in trouble with the law all the time?
00:44:41You know how many times he's been picked up on the highway by y'all for riding that car at
00:44:45their age?
00:44:45And them patrolmen let it go out of pity for him.
00:44:50You think a car would be the last thing he'd want to get in?
00:44:54I mean, can you explain that one?
00:44:57A car?
00:44:59I'd like to send one of my men around to a photograph of him.
00:45:02What kind of photograph?
00:45:04We ain't took none recently.
00:45:07Oh, I got some his mama had.
00:45:10Oh, that'd be fine.
00:45:12As recent as possible, though.
00:45:15Assembly be right over.
00:45:16Okay.
00:45:18Bye.
00:45:21Oh, you never seen her?
00:45:23No.
00:45:27Her name's Ainsley.
00:45:29You've heard of the Reds?
00:45:32She's married to an ex-con up from McAllister.
00:45:36He wears a beeper in his legs so the police will always know where he's at.
00:45:41I used to always see her in here.
00:45:43I ain't seen her lately.
00:45:47What's she doing?
00:45:49What's she look like she's doing?
00:45:51Set.
00:45:53Oklahoma City bus dropped her off about an hour ago.
00:45:56Stop staring. She'll call you over.
00:45:59So?
00:46:00Ain't I just told you her husband's an ex-con?
00:46:03You look so sad.
00:46:06I'm telling you, stay away.
00:46:07She's a talker.
00:46:10Why do you keep looking at me?
00:46:12Too late.
00:46:14I don't know.
00:46:17Over here.
00:46:21Don't be afraid.
00:46:24Angel, this kid ain't looking for no trouble.
00:46:26Come on.
00:46:33A closed-circuit TV signal that takes what happens here in Denver and sends it all the way back to
00:46:38a courtroom in Oklahoma City appears to be on the way to reality.
00:46:41A couple of the obstacles that's safe.
00:46:43You're welcome in Queen figuring out technically how to make the closed-circuit signal secure and figuring out...
00:46:49Yeah.
00:46:50A crew in Oklahoma City...
00:46:52We'll get to see it.
00:46:53I heard he says he's been...
00:46:55Seen you over at the Total on his lunch hour.
00:46:58Yeah, I guess so.
00:47:01He says you sit and talk to folks.
00:47:05I get lonely, Jack. I got nothing to do all day.
00:47:08But there is still a long and funky road ahead...
00:47:12So you hang on to the Total?
00:47:14I've been going there since I was old enough to drive.
00:47:23What do you say to folks?
00:47:26Is there a problem?
00:47:28No, no problem.
00:47:30Just...
00:47:31What do you say to folks?
00:47:35Ask them where they're going or something, I don't know.
00:47:38Just small talk.
00:47:41I miss people.
00:47:47Any news?
00:47:48Jack, you ask me every day.
00:47:52I want to know, don't I?
00:47:54Christ, we've only been married five months.
00:47:56Don't say that word like that.
00:47:58What word?
00:47:59You know what word.
00:48:00Christ?
00:48:01Yes.
00:48:01Fine.
00:48:35I'm sorry.
00:48:36No, I am.
00:48:38I just want a family.
00:48:39I want that for us.
00:48:40So do I.
00:48:41All my prayers and thoughts come into what can make us happy.
00:48:46We'll have a family.
00:48:48That's all I want.
00:48:53I want.
00:48:56I want what's best for us.
00:48:58You know that.
00:48:59Yes.
00:49:04Listen to me.
00:49:08I don't want you to leave this house unless I know where you're going. Why?
00:49:12What?
00:49:13I mean, I want you here.
00:49:16I am here.
00:49:17I want you here.
00:49:19I don't want to be wondering where you are.
00:49:22Jack.
00:49:23No.
00:49:28I want a proper home.
00:49:30A home God want to give a family to.
00:49:34I'll leave here whenever I like.
00:49:36You sure will.
00:49:40What you gonna do to me?
00:49:41I do leave.
00:49:42I'll bolt these doors.
00:49:44I mean it.
00:49:45I could do that.
00:49:47You think you get lonely now?
00:49:49You see what that's fine.
00:49:50Jack.
00:49:51No.
00:49:51That's it.
00:49:52Discussion's over.
00:50:01Come here.
00:50:07Come here.
00:50:12I'm Ainsley.
00:50:15Tom.
00:50:20I could use some company for a while.
00:50:24I don't mean no harm.
00:50:39I think I might have left my husband tonight.
00:50:50Del said, um, that you've been out in Oklahoma City.
00:50:54Yeah.
00:50:55Second time in my life.
00:51:01How long was you and your husband married for?
00:51:06About six months.
00:51:09Where you going?
00:51:13Just out and around.
00:51:15Just out and around?
00:51:18Driving.
00:51:22I don't want to go up to the lake.
00:51:30You by yourself?
00:51:32Yeah.
00:51:35I don't know, is it too safe up there?
00:51:38No, it's...
00:51:42Will you come with me?
00:51:44To the lake?
00:51:49Yeah.
00:51:50Yeah.
00:51:52Take me then.
00:51:54Take me up there.
00:51:57It's where I was born.
00:51:58It's true.
00:52:00My baby's gone.
00:52:02I know that it's going to be gone.
00:52:16I know that it's going to be gone.
00:52:21What?
00:52:22I'm hoping that he walks out on a little shelf up yonder, on the side of the wall.
00:52:27Yeah, I ain't gonna get to see that boat.
00:52:29Well, about a month, old Bill was back in the barback shop at the old pessimistic barb,
00:52:33and said you didn't take that teepin' shit...
00:52:35Bill?
00:52:35Bill said I did take that teepin' shit the man...
00:52:47Oh, God.
00:52:50Ainsley.
00:52:53It's what we've been waiting on.
00:52:55Well, we've been waiting, Jack.
00:53:03Jack, I met your parole officer.
00:53:07What?
00:53:09He came by last Tuesday while he was at work.
00:53:15Yeah?
00:53:17And I never let on about this.
00:53:21Oh, thank you, ma'am.
00:53:22But he told me things.
00:53:26This is what the state calls a spot check.
00:53:30The state feels Jackie is rehabilitated.
00:53:36Rehabilitated.
00:53:37Uh, but they always say a spot should know.
00:53:43Uh, so you probably know this, but, uh, Jack used to live up outside, uh, Tulsa in Turley.
00:53:50Yes.
00:53:51Yeah.
00:53:51And, uh, five years ago he was, oh, he's a very different man.
00:53:55Uh, as a matter of fact, his turnaround's been remarkable.
00:53:59What did he do?
00:54:02Well, I don't know what you know.
00:54:03I don't know much.
00:54:05Right.
00:54:06Well, he, um, he was just a regular shithead that, excuse me, uh, who was going nowhere fast.
00:54:13What did he do?
00:54:20You mean you really never, uh, you mean specifically, but, well, I guess.
00:54:33He nearly beat a woman to death.
00:54:39The gal he was living with at the time.
00:54:40Mm-hmm.
00:54:44And, uh, what?
00:54:50She was carrying her child at the time.
00:54:53Oh, yeah.
00:54:56Hmm.
00:55:00And what happened to her?
00:55:02Well, the gal made it.
00:55:04Yeah.
00:55:06Yeah.
00:55:16Oh, God.
00:55:20Jack.
00:55:21Nancy, I ain't like that no more.
00:55:24Jack, I told you that first night we met,
00:55:27that what you done got you in prison didn't make no difference to me.
00:55:32That officer could have told me anything, and I'd still love you.
00:55:38But that ain't the point.
00:55:41I got nothing left to give a child.
00:55:47Let me speak.
00:55:50I sit here all day.
00:55:53You won't even let me leave my own home no more.
00:55:58I can't even believe I'm pregnant.
00:56:00I feel so empty in here.
00:56:04Keep away.
00:56:07I gotta make it right, Jack.
00:56:11I wanna make it right.
00:56:14And we ain't right.
00:56:19I won't hear this.
00:56:23How can you say you won't hear this?
00:56:27I won't hear this.
00:56:33Then...
00:56:36Jack, that don't make no difference.
00:56:39What are you saying?
00:56:45Janice told me.
00:56:46Don't you think for a second.
00:56:48It ain't up to you.
00:56:50Look, hell, it ain't.
00:56:51Keep away from me.
00:56:55Here, honey.
00:56:56Got a touchy.
00:56:59I wouldn't do that.
00:57:01Honey, you're everything to me.
00:57:03Look at me.
00:57:04You're everything.
00:57:06You're everything.
00:57:07You just gotta let me know you hear me.
00:57:09I hear you, Jack.
00:57:12Just tell me we're gonna do this, all right?
00:57:15Say it, Angely.
00:57:18Say we're gonna do it.
00:57:20Keep away.
00:57:21Say it.
00:57:24Come on.
00:57:25Say we're gonna do it.
00:57:27Say it.
00:57:30Say it.
00:57:31Say it.
00:57:31All right.
00:57:34Say it.
00:57:34Say we're gonna do it.
00:57:35Say the words.
00:57:36Go do it.
00:57:43Do what?
00:57:48Say it.
00:57:57Say it.
00:57:58Say it.
00:58:25Say it.
00:58:34It's standard procedure.
00:58:36A wife should know.
00:58:37I want another parole officer.
00:58:39You want to stay in this county, there's nobody else to meet with.
00:58:41You're stuck with me.
00:58:42Hey, since you're here, I've got some good news for you.
00:58:45You're going to be took off monitoring.
00:58:46You nearly ruined my marriage.
00:58:48Well, take it up with a marriage counselor.
00:58:52Christ, ain't you happy?
00:58:54Yeah, I'm happy.
00:58:56Good.
00:58:56Come on in.
00:58:57I'd rather not, thanks.
00:59:00Fine.
00:59:03Hello?
00:59:04Hey.
00:59:06I've got some good news, too.
00:59:07Janice?
00:59:09I'm going to be a daddy.
00:59:11Is that right?
00:59:13Yes, it is.
00:59:15Well, really, that's, uh, yeah, so how's Ainsley?
00:59:18She's great.
00:59:20So she's never been happier.
00:59:22That's wonderful.
00:59:25You don't seem sincerely excited for me.
00:59:28What's that supposed to mean?
00:59:30I don't know.
00:59:30You just don't seem truly happy for me.
00:59:34Fuck you, Jack.
00:59:37I don't see nothing.
00:59:39Just said I was going to be daddy's, y'all.
00:59:41You know, I think you could put your own problems aside and be happy for me.
00:59:44I think you better leave now.
00:59:46Why?
00:59:46Hey, you get the fuck out of this building right now if you know what's good for you.
00:59:49I'll slap you back on monitoring for five fucking years, my friend.
00:59:52I'll slap you back on your head.
01:00:42Jack, I'm Sheriff Rodgers.
01:00:45What's his video camera?
01:00:47It's standard procedure.
01:00:49Understand you waive counsel?
01:00:51I don't need counsel.
01:00:52I'm still here, right?
01:00:54You waive counsel for this interview?
01:00:56Yes.
01:00:57Good.
01:00:59I'd like to call my wife.
01:01:04Officer Sprague tells me you're a religious man.
01:01:07Yes, I am.
01:01:10You want to talk with me about that?
01:01:12Are you a religious man?
01:01:15You mean talking about me?
01:01:17You believe in God?
01:01:26All right, yes, I do.
01:01:28You ain't got the slightest idea.
01:01:31I can hear it in your voice.
01:01:34How should my voice sound?
01:01:36I want to call my wife.
01:01:39How should my voice sound?
01:01:41Simple.
01:01:42Clear.
01:01:45Look, to answer the question's almost strange.
01:01:47Is that how you believe?
01:01:49You could never understand how I believe.
01:01:52Why?
01:01:53He ain't been as far gone as I have.
01:01:56Well, how do you know?
01:01:58By looking at you.
01:01:59Okay, you fucker.
01:02:00I heard enough of this shit.
01:02:02Will.
01:02:02Oh, goddammit, I have.
01:02:05He says another word.
01:02:06I'll strangle him myself.
01:02:07Will.
01:02:08This state gave you everything.
01:02:10This state gave you your life back.
01:02:12You can't give me my life.
01:02:13Get him out of here.
01:02:14Let's get him out of here.
01:02:15You're gonna fry, you prick.
01:02:16Will.
01:02:17I'm gonna see you fry if it's the last thing that I do.
01:02:19Fear none of those things without shit.
01:02:21And I'm gonna be there.
01:02:22Take your goddamn gants off me.
01:02:24Don't talk to me.
01:02:24I'm gonna be there in the front fucking row where you go, and you're going to hell.
01:02:29You're gonna be straight to fucking hell.
01:02:31Give it to hell a crown of lies.
01:02:50Revelation.
01:02:52You've read the Bible.
01:02:54It's more than most Christians.
01:02:56He's right.
01:02:58This goes to trial.
01:02:59We'll win.
01:03:00You'll get the chair.
01:03:02I want that.
01:03:05I want your life to end.
01:03:09I used to think a man's life was God's domain.
01:03:13But you've changed that.
01:03:18Now.
01:03:26You remember this child.
01:03:28He just picked you out of a mug book.
01:03:31Looks at your picture and starts to tremble.
01:03:35Trembles at the sight of your photograph.
01:03:38Tom?
01:03:39The name is Tom Spencer.
01:03:42Child, will you let me in?
01:03:43And he's 14 years old.
01:03:45Look, you're gonna have to say something.
01:03:47Listen, I won't tolerate this no more.
01:03:51That sheriff keeps calling asking how you are.
01:03:55Tom?
01:03:59He sent someone over for a picture of you.
01:04:02Fancy that, Tom.
01:04:06Tom?
01:04:07I'm all right.
01:04:09Well, okay then.
01:04:12I'm going to the kitchen now.
01:04:22About a year and a half ago, his mother finished cooking dinner for him just after the evening news.
01:04:27Dee Dee, I've got to go out.
01:04:28And she went to the phone and called her sister.
01:04:31The lady works at the diner here in town.
01:04:34And she said, take care of my boy.
01:04:38It's yours.
01:04:39And she walked out of her house.
01:04:43Stepped to the garage.
01:04:45Closed all the doors.
01:04:50Started her car.
01:04:58Took 48 minutes.
01:05:02Boy, it was a wall away.
01:05:08When he turned off the TV, he heard the car.
01:05:25Wish I could describe to you
01:05:28the confusion and terror
01:05:31I saw in his eyes
01:05:33when he seen her being drug out of the garage.
01:05:40That boy got nothing to do with me.
01:05:44We found her body, Jack.
01:05:53You confess on this tape
01:05:56he won't have to be part of a trial.
01:06:00I'll stay to use him up to get to you.
01:06:02I want him spared that.
01:06:05I'll get you anyway.
01:06:07Why put this boy through more?
01:06:11Maybe God wanted him to have seen what he's seen.
01:06:15It's got nothing to do with God.
01:06:18Everything's got to do with God.
01:06:20It's that you and this whole world's forgot.
01:06:22Was God with you on Friday night?
01:06:24You don't believe that?
01:06:26I don't see why he'd let that happen
01:06:28to one of his children.
01:06:30God ain't about asking why.
01:06:33You never ask why?
01:06:37Even if I did
01:06:39think I'd hear an answer?
01:06:49No, I don't.
01:06:59I can save your life.
01:07:03I've spoke with the D.A.
01:07:06He says we get a confession
01:07:08and they won't go for the chair.
01:07:10You said you wanted me dead.
01:07:13It's a trade
01:07:14I can live with.
01:07:18You live
01:07:20and the boy spared all that.
01:07:31I'm going to turn this on now.
01:07:34Jack?
01:07:38I'm going to turn this on.
01:07:44I'm asking you to see how he is.
01:07:46Now, I'm tired of this.
01:07:50All I do
01:07:51is do for that boy.
01:07:53This boy
01:07:54ain't got a mama.
01:07:57Who do you think
01:07:58has been his mama?
01:08:01I'm making
01:08:02his favorite supper.
01:08:03I'm going to fetch him
01:08:03when it's ready.
01:08:05You can't check on him
01:08:06real quick
01:08:06right now.
01:08:07Oh, mercy.
01:08:09Please, I...
01:08:11I'd like to hear
01:08:12how he is
01:08:13and sometimes
01:08:13it's hard to know
01:08:14through a closed door.
01:08:15Fine.
01:08:18Call me right back.
01:08:22Hi.
01:08:24Hi.
01:08:26Hi.
01:08:49I understand that,
01:08:50but we do like
01:08:51to advise you
01:08:51to come back
01:08:52another day.
01:08:52I can't afford a baby
01:08:54and I can't afford
01:08:55another round-trip bus ticket.
01:08:58And you say
01:08:59you're not married?
01:09:01I'm not married.
01:09:03Is that the truth?
01:09:05Yeah, it's the truth.
01:09:15Tom?
01:09:17Your supper's ready.
01:09:20Tom?
01:09:23Say it to the camera.
01:09:26It was me killed her.
01:09:28You come down
01:09:29from Kingfisher?
01:09:31Killed who?
01:09:34I killed my wife,
01:09:35Ainsley.
01:09:38Did you know
01:09:39what you were doing?
01:09:41And why?
01:09:43Yes.
01:09:46I did.
01:09:51Watch your heel.
01:09:52Oh, God.
01:09:56Up.
01:10:06All right, child.
01:10:07That's enough of this.
01:10:08I'm coming in.
01:10:09You hear me?
01:10:10I'm coming in.
01:10:14Tom.
01:10:16Uh-oh.
01:10:18Tom!
01:10:21Oh, no!
01:10:23Oh, no!
01:10:28Please, God!
01:10:48Mommy!
01:10:51Mommy!
01:10:53Mommy!
01:10:54I can see the hospital!
01:10:55I can see the hospital!
01:11:38Faith!
01:11:42God tells a man to sacrifice his son.
01:11:47The man has faith and he will do it.
01:11:51He doesn't ask why.
01:11:53He doesn't ask why.
01:11:53He doesn't ask why.
01:11:53He doesn't ask why.
01:11:55At least Abraham,
01:11:57as he binds his son,
01:12:00knows why they're there.
01:12:03I don't anymore.
01:12:08I see him everywhere.
01:12:10Boy, I hardly knew.
01:12:14He doesn't become vague,
01:12:18like most memories,
01:12:20but clearer.
01:12:22A ghost.
01:12:26In perpetual approach.
01:12:30It lingers in the faces of my children,
01:12:34grandchildren.
01:12:36You drive good.
01:12:38As she lingers.
01:12:41In every woman I'll ever know.
01:12:47Hey!
01:12:57Hello?
01:13:02Ainsley?
01:13:04Ain't she gonna get out?
01:13:06You wanna come then?
01:13:08I don't wanna stand out here alone.
01:13:21How'd you find this place?
01:13:23My mama brought me here the day my daddy died.
01:13:29She knelt right there.
01:13:32She knelt right there.
01:13:32And she prayed.
01:13:38And her and him used to come here.
01:13:41High school.
01:13:43For privacy.
01:13:44I see.
01:13:48How old are you?
01:13:50Just turned 14.
01:13:5214?
01:13:53You never get pulled over?
01:13:56Sometimes.
01:13:58I drive friendly.
01:13:59I'm fine.
01:14:00Yes, you did.
01:14:13What you wanna be when you get older?
01:14:17Oh, that car's an awful lot.
01:14:22Oklahoma City?
01:14:25Yeah.
01:14:26Mechanic?
01:14:27Yeah.
01:14:30I was gonna open my own restaurant.
01:14:33Where all the oil men could come from.
01:14:36Steak and potatoes.
01:14:41I was gonna marry one of them.
01:14:43Have big strong boys.
01:14:47Is that who you running from?
01:14:49Now?
01:14:50Is that the oil man you married?
01:14:51No.
01:14:54I said, where'd she go?
01:14:59Mechanic I married.
01:15:10So what are you gonna do now?
01:15:13I was hoping coming up here would help me figure that out.
01:15:23What are you staring at?
01:15:26Your eye.
01:15:28What about them?
01:15:33One of them...
01:15:34Keep moving off.
01:15:36Is it guys?

01:16:05Don't get in there, man.
01:16:06It's just glass.
01:16:09It's not my real eye.
01:16:15Where's your real eye?
01:16:17It got cut out when I was a little girl.
01:16:22When my mama told me I was gonna get a new eye.
01:16:25I said, make it purple.
01:16:31Because that was my favorite color.
01:16:36Your eye ain't purple.
01:16:38Of course not.
01:16:47You're lucky.
01:16:49For that.
01:16:51Preacher says people with two different colored eyes is the devil.
01:16:59I didn't know that, Dad.
01:17:11You wanna put it back in me?
01:17:21Not so fast.
01:17:23Wipe that smuzz from your hand.
01:17:26No smuzz.
01:17:30Hold it soft.
01:17:37Slow yourself.
01:17:51Did it hurt?
01:17:52I'm unusual.
01:17:54You done it real gentle.
01:18:01Did you come into my arms?
01:18:18Yes.
01:18:23Just children.
01:18:27That's all we are, Lord, if you're out there at all.
01:18:32You're children.
01:18:34You're children.
01:18:38You're children.

01:19:15What we're doing is they're growing around.
01:19:15Well, this is my mind.
01:19:27Which will you go for?
01:19:35Which will you love?
01:19:43Which will you choose from?
01:19:51From the stars above
01:19:59Which will you answer?
01:20:08Which will you call?
01:20:16Which will you take form?
01:20:24For your one and all
