American Idol - Season 24 - Episode 07: 'Ohana Round
Transcript
00:00:07Tonight, American Idol reaches a crossroads in the competition.
00:00:12Who makes it through to America's vote?
00:00:15We have to cut from 30 to 20.
00:00:18It's hard.
00:00:19It's time.
00:00:20Let's do it.
00:00:21It's alright.
00:00:23A brand new round.
00:00:26The Ohana round is all about family.
00:00:28I dedicate this song to you, Papa.
00:00:30This song's for my mama, my daddy, my son, my grandpa, my lovely mother.
00:00:35I can't look at her too long or I will immediately cry.
00:00:37I think it's harder to perform in front of your family.
00:00:40It's like a different kind of pressure.
00:00:45Expect unforgettable voices, emotion laid bare.
00:00:49Every time I see my boy while I'm singing, man, he gives me an extra boost.
00:00:52I love you, boy!
00:00:54But this time, the judgment goes beyond our panel.
00:00:57Three groups will be charged with making some critical decisions.
00:01:01The idols themselves, Ohana, their family, and a panel of top music influencers and pop culture tastemakers.
00:01:10The song is not big enough for that voice.
00:01:12I absolutely loved her tone.
00:01:14I know she has it, and I wanted to see it so bad.
00:01:16I think she nailed it.
00:01:19Each group will vote for the performance that moved them most, earning the winners a platinum ticket that takes them
00:01:26straight to America's vote.
00:01:28Let's hear it one more time for the platinum ticket winners.
00:01:31Then, the judges decide who earns the final spots in the top 20.
00:01:36My favorite is over here.
00:01:38I will fight for her.
00:01:40You better get her right now.
00:01:42It gets to you that your journey could come to an end.
00:01:45Whose lives will change forever?
00:01:49From Alani, a Disney resort and spa in Koalina, Hawaii, this is American Idol.
00:02:12Please give me a warm welcome to my friend, Mr. Lionel O'Reilly.
00:02:18Let's keep it going for Mr. Lionel O'Reilly.
00:02:31Music is one of the most important parts of Hawaiian culture and our ohana, our families.
00:02:37Our ohana surround us with love in good times, in bad times.
00:02:44But you know what?
00:02:45There is no greater gift that you can give to our ohana than the gift of song.
00:02:54Enjoy, everyone.
00:02:55Aloha.
00:03:00Not a bad day at the offense.
00:03:08My name is Jordan McCullough.
00:03:10I'm 27, and I'm from Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
00:03:13It's mesmerizing to watch you.
00:03:15Oh, my God.
00:03:17We are in Hawaii.
00:03:18What is that?
00:03:19We're going from pine trees to palm trees, okay?
00:03:22This is different.
00:03:22All right, y'all, close your eyes now.
00:03:25It was only one show we came here for the night.
00:03:30I would not be sitting here today if it wasn't for my entire family, mom, dad, grandma, uncles,
00:03:36cousins, cousins, to show up to places that I needed to perform or sing at.
00:03:41Now I get to live my dream.
00:03:43Yeah.
00:03:45Wow.
00:03:46That's crazy.
00:03:49Jesus, I've been crying this entire time.
00:03:53Dang it.
00:03:56Man, it's going to mean so much to look out and see my family, mom and dad there.
00:04:02Tonight, I dedicate this song as a tribute to my family.
00:04:05When I think of this song, I think of protection.
00:04:07I think of love and care.
00:04:09And so, here's Grandma's Hands.
00:04:11Oh, my God.
00:04:13It's a great song.
00:04:18Oh, my God.
00:04:22Grandma's Hands
00:04:23Claped to church on Sunday morning
00:04:28Grandma's Hands
00:04:29Played a tambourine so well
00:04:34Grandma's Hands
00:04:35Used to issue out
00:04:37A warning she say, baby grandma understands
00:04:42That you really love that man
00:04:45Put yourself in Jesus' hands
00:04:49Grandma's hands, hands, hands
00:04:52Can we take it up a little higher, man?
00:04:55Hey!
00:04:56Ooh, oh, oh, oh, hi
00:05:01Grandma's hands
00:05:02You should bring me a piece of candy
00:05:05Yeah, grandma's hands
00:05:08Boy, they really, really came in handy
00:05:11She say, daddy, don't chill with that boy
00:05:15What you wanna speakin' for?

00:05:50I don't know.
00:05:51Not a bad way to get things started.
00:05:55I don't know what happened to you in Hawaii.
00:05:59But let the congregation say amen.
00:06:02Amen.
00:06:04You delivered.
00:06:05Fantastic.
00:06:07Thank you so much.
00:06:08Thank you all.
00:06:12What can you say after that?
00:06:15My man met the Holy Ghost up in here, brother.
00:06:17He ate 11.
00:06:19No crumbs.
00:06:20Not one crumbs.
00:06:22Not nothing.
00:06:23He never ceases to amaze.
00:06:25There's no stage that's too big for him.
00:06:28Jordan got a platinum ticket.
00:06:30If he didn't, then people are crazy.
00:06:34So the hopefuls are excited for Jordan.
00:06:37But the voting for our three platinum tickets won't begin until all of the top 30 have performed.
00:06:43One of these platinum tickets will be decided by our highly esteemed panel of industry experts who have a combined

00:08:06Like everyone's.
00:08:07Me either.
00:08:08One person going home from this group, let alone ten people, is just like in a talk.
00:08:12Breaking.
00:08:12It's going to rip my heart out of my chest.
00:08:17We have Mary Jo and Chloe duking it out.
00:08:21Who wants to go first?
00:08:23Hollywood week, I had to do singles.

00:11:15It is not about the little things that can go wrong during the performance.
00:11:20It really is how you shove it aside and finish strong.
00:11:25That's it.
00:11:26You got back on that horse and took off real quick.
00:11:29Way to finish strong.

00:12:14This one goes out to my family.
00:12:21You know they say you can't go home again.
00:12:28Oh, I just had to come back one last time.
00:12:33Ma'am, I know you don't know me from now.
00:12:39But these handprints on the front steps are mine.
00:12:45I thought if I could touch this place or a feeling.
00:12:51This brokenness inside me might start healing.
00:12:56You leave home and you move on and you do the best you can.
00:13:03I got lost in this old world and forgot who I am.
00:13:15I thought if I could touch this place or a feeling.
00:13:21This brokenness inside me might start healing.
00:13:26I'll hear it till I come to someone else.
00:13:30I thought that maybe I could find myself.
00:13:39If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave.
00:13:43You won't take nothing but a memory.
00:13:47From the house that built me.
00:13:56From the house that built me.
00:14:02Oh, my God.
00:14:08Thanks for touching the end.

00:19:05some people live for the fortune
00:19:10some people live just for the fame okay
00:19:16some people think that the physical things define what's within
00:19:27and I've been there before and that life so poor so full of the superficial
00:19:39and I'm sure
00:19:41some people want it all but I don't want nothing at all
00:19:47if it ain't you baby if I ain't got you baby
00:19:53some people want time to reach
00:19:56some just want everything but everything means nothing
00:20:14if it ain't you baby if I ain't got you baby
00:20:19some people want it all but I don't want nothing at all
00:20:25if it ain't you baby if I ain't got you
00:20:30some people want time to reach
00:20:34some just want everything but everything means nothing

00:21:25exactly what I wanted to see was that
00:21:27I thought he had really great control and power to his voice but
00:21:31he hit a couple of rough notes
00:21:34here we go
00:21:36performing in front of the editor of rolling stone
00:21:39geez louise there's so many other eyes on us who get a say
00:21:43and our future it's a little frightening
00:21:49I'm Hannah Harper from southeast Missouri and I'm going to sing a country classic that my
00:21:54grandpa used to sing to honor his musical legacy I'm really excited about the ohana round to
00:21:58have the chance to honor my grandpa he was a patriarch so many branches of
00:22:03talented people that came from him he played music until the day he died
00:22:07good music that we can uh all relate to as a family and we all play together at it and
00:22:12everybody likes it bluegrass and gospel that's what keeps us together
00:22:17the legacy that he left was such a strong impression on my life I want to do the same for
00:22:22my kids
00:22:24I wish my grandpa was here to hear it my grandma's going to be here and she's going to be
00:22:27so thrilled
00:22:27because it was his favorite song
00:22:31i know you're in life

00:24:24go to heaven
00:24:27Gosh, there are so many parallels with your voice and Dolly and just, it's just so beautifully
00:24:35country.
00:24:36But just remember that key that you got to at the end and really live in that space because
00:24:40your voice really opened up there.
00:24:42You've got the goods and that was, your voice is so beautiful to me.
00:24:46Appreciate it, thank you.
00:24:48Got that straight, authentic mountain voice, boy.
00:24:53You can definitely see that she was missing something because she usually plays the guitar.
00:24:58But I don't know, I think she really delivered it and she felt like she was herself.
00:25:03I mean, obviously everybody can sing because they're here.
00:25:05But there's going to only be a handful that can make it to that star quality, you know?
00:25:10Say that again.
00:25:11What did you just, no, what did you just say?
00:25:13It was important.
00:25:14I said, would you go for the best singer or would you go for someone who you know would
00:25:19sell tickets, has a look and has a voice?
00:25:22These are the questions we have to ask ourselves.
00:25:31Hi guys.
00:25:33Um, my name is Genevieve Hayward.
00:25:35Today I will be singing your song by Elton John.
00:25:38Um, I picked this song today because the last time that my father was in Hawaii, he was on
00:25:43leave from Vietnam.
00:25:44Um, give it up for my dad.
00:25:46Thank you for your service, Dom.
00:25:49If I could give you the world, I would.
00:25:52But for right now, I'm just going to start with the song.
00:25:59It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside.
00:26:07I'm not one of those who can easily hide.
00:26:14I don't have much money, but boy, if I did, I'd buy a big house where we both could live.
00:26:31If I was this colder, then I can't know.
00:26:38Or a man who makes potions in a traveling shot.
00:26:46I love that choice.
00:26:48Wow.
00:26:49That was so unexpected.
00:26:50That's what I can do.
00:26:53My gift is my song and this one's for you.
00:27:02And you can tell everybody that this is your song.
00:27:10It may be quite simple, but now that it's done.
00:27:17I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
00:27:21That I put you down in the world
00:27:27Sing it!
00:27:29Wow, wow, wow
00:27:30How wonderful life is
00:27:33While you're in the world
00:27:38Wow!
00:27:40Wow!
00:27:41Wow!
00:27:43Thank you, baby!
00:27:45What a voice
00:27:46Identity is hard when you sing such an iconic song like Elton's
00:27:51But for you to hang on and keep in control of that is amazing
00:27:56Way to come out here and box, all right?
00:28:01Thank you, guys
00:28:07I loved her, listen, I always go for the rocker girls
00:28:10And she nailed it
00:28:12I really liked her energy, I loved her grit
00:28:16I, like, honestly, am, like, not an emotional person
00:28:18But, like, I thought about my mom and dad
00:28:20And just, like, how they've literally been there for me since day one
00:28:24Well, it's okay
00:28:26Woo!
00:28:28Those parents are having to be extra parental today
00:28:30Oh, my God
00:28:33I'm going to be taking the song
00:28:33Hi, everyone
00:28:34My name is Abayami Lewis
00:28:35And I will be singing Rise Up by Andra Day
00:28:38I'm doing this song for my mother
00:28:40She is a single parent
00:28:42And life is not easy being a single parent
00:28:45She has taught me to rise up against all things that I'm dealing with
00:28:49And it inspires me
00:28:51I know I can rise up.
00:28:53We will rise.
00:28:55We will rise.
00:28:57We will rise.
00:28:59Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:29:04We'll rise.
00:29:07Yeah, we'll rise up.
00:29:11We'll rise like the day.
00:29:14Oh, rise up.
00:29:15Rise of the praise.
00:29:17We'll rise up.
00:29:19And I'll do it a thousand times again.
00:29:25For you.
00:29:30For you.
00:29:33For you.
00:29:34For you.
00:29:36For you.
00:29:38For you.
00:29:44For you.
00:29:48For you.
00:29:57Guzi!
00:29:58Come on.
00:30:00She's frickin' 16.
00:30:02And she's like a Disney star.
00:30:04You know what I mean?
00:30:05Yeah.
00:30:06And for a singer to have like that big belt and a beautiful head voice like that is so rare.
00:30:11If the tide takes California.
00:30:16I'm so glad I got to hold ya.
00:30:20My family has always been by my side throughout my entire music journey.
00:30:25So it's really exciting to do this Ohana rap.
00:30:28Till forever falls apart Till forever falls apart
00:30:37My parents have always sacrificed so much time and everything for this.
00:30:41And it means so much to me that they're here right now and doing all of this.
00:30:45It really means a lot.
00:30:46If the tide takes California I'm so glad I got to know ya.
00:30:54And if the sky falls from heaven above Oh I know I had the best time falling into love
00:31:09And for a while you were all mine I spent a lifetime giving you my heart
00:31:18And I swear that I'll be yours forever I'll be yours forever
00:31:23I'll be yours forever
00:31:29Till forever falls apart
00:31:36Thank you so much.
00:31:43Breath of fresh air.
00:31:47How many are we getting rid of tonight?
00:31:49So there's 30 and we have to get down to 20.
00:31:53Oh 10.
00:31:53Oh God.
00:31:54Yeah.
00:31:54Here we go. Stand by.
00:31:56I'm worried.
00:31:57There's a lot of talented people that are in this group.
00:32:00Let's please give it up for Bryan Thomas.
00:32:06I can't point a finger at anyone I don't think is going to make it to the top 20.
00:32:10Which makes it so scary.
00:32:12This next song goes out to all the people that we've had to leave behind in order to pursue our
00:32:17dreams.
00:32:18For this round I'll be singing Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
00:32:21This song is kind of about change.
00:32:23I just recently moved to South Florida in the pursuit of love.
00:32:27I hardly see anyone now.
00:32:29I kind of lost my family.
00:32:31It's just one of those seasons of life.
00:32:34Hey bud.
00:32:35I'm super proud of you.
00:32:38I know how you've been dreaming about this your whole life.
00:32:42Having you here.
00:32:43Just getting to spend the time.
00:32:50I miss you.
00:32:52I miss you.
00:32:54I miss being home.
00:32:56I love you with all my heart.
00:32:57You too.
00:33:00I miss you.
00:33:02I miss you.
00:33:06I miss being home.
00:33:07Well, I've been afraid of changing.
00:33:12Cause I've built my life around you.
00:33:19Great.
00:33:21Jay.
00:33:22But time made you older.
00:33:26Even children get older.
00:33:30And I'm getting older too.
00:33:37So take my love.
00:33:40And take it down.
00:33:42vibe.
00:33:49And if you see my reflection in a snow-covered hell...
00:34:04Maybe the Lancelot will bring it down
00:34:11Oh, the Lancelot brought me down
00:34:23Thank you, guys.
00:34:27Wow.
00:34:29Wow.
00:34:30Thank you, Brian.
00:34:31Brian, well, before you sing, I know talking to your family
00:34:35and telling them how much you love them is emotional.
00:34:38We still got to remember I got a song to deliver
00:34:42and I got to make sure I'm knocking this thing out
00:34:44start to finish.
00:34:46Now, you're one of my favorite voices,
00:34:47but it got a little screamy a little bit.
00:34:50So just curb down some of that over-raspy, gravelly stuff.
00:34:55Thank you so much.
00:34:58I was trying my hardest to get through this song
00:35:00and that just wasn't what the judges were looking for this round.
00:35:03He was trying real hard.
00:35:05He doesn't need to.
00:35:06He did a really good job.
00:35:08I'm glad my dad got to see it
00:35:10because it might have been my last performance of the idol.
00:35:18Welcome back to Idol's Ohana Round,
00:35:20where Ray is hoping to make it to America's vote.
00:35:23I was looking at the camera and I was like,
00:35:25this is so giving Love Island confessional.
00:35:29Hi, everyone.
00:35:31My name is Ray.
00:35:32I'm going to be singing I'll Be There by the Jackson Five.
00:35:35Yes.
00:35:36I wanted to dedicate this song to my sister,
00:35:39my heart, my soul, everything.
00:35:42My sister Jamie is one of the most important people in my life.
00:35:45She's the only person that really understands me
00:35:48and what I'm going through.
00:35:51I just love you so much.
00:35:52And this is for you.
00:35:54My promise to you that I'll always be there for you.
00:35:56So sweet.
00:35:57A sister's love.
00:35:59Ain't nothing like a sister's love now.
00:36:01You and I must make a pact.
00:36:07We must bring salvation back.
00:36:13Okay.
00:36:14Where there is love, I'll be there.
00:36:24Oh my God.
00:36:26I'll reach out my hand to you.
00:36:30Come on, girl.
00:36:32I'll have faith in all you do.
00:36:37You better sing the song, then.
00:36:39Where there is love, I'll be there.
00:36:50I'll be there to comfort you.
00:36:54In my world of dreams around you.
00:36:58I'm so glad I found you, baby.
00:37:01What is going on?
00:37:02I'll be there with a love so strong.
00:37:06I'll be there with a love.
00:37:09You know I'll keep falling off.
00:37:15I'll be there.
00:37:17Hey, girl.
00:37:21I'll be there.
00:37:24Yeah.
00:37:28I'll be there.
00:37:48I think America's going to be there.
00:37:51I think so.
00:37:53You always just command the stage so perfectly,
00:37:57such confidence.
00:37:58And I tell you, you are one of our exceptional voices
00:38:03that we have.
00:38:04It's just really awesome to watch you
00:38:07be able to tell your sister how much you love her.
00:38:10And you are a serious contender.
00:38:12That was a great performance.
00:38:15Thank you so much.
00:38:17I love my sister so much.
00:38:19Seeing her just gave me all the nerves went away.
00:38:22She came out, hand brakes off, no stops, just went in.
00:38:26And I loved it.
00:38:26Love it.
00:38:27Loved it.
00:38:31Thank you guys so much.
00:38:33I'm Jake Thistle from New Jersey.
00:38:35And I'm playing a song called Sleep On Me, which is an original.
00:38:38It was really important for me to play an original during this round
00:38:40because my parents and my family, they've always been
00:38:42really supportive of me writing songs.
00:38:45When I was really young, a family friend played guitar
00:38:47and he gave me one because I was a toddler and it made noise.
00:38:52I started gigging when I was nine years old
00:38:54and my parents drove me to every gig until I could get my license.
00:38:57It meant a lot to have that foundation.
00:38:59They're not here physically with me in Hawaii,
00:39:00but my parents do know that I'm dedicating this song to them.
00:39:03It's going to be really special.
00:39:10Well, confident.
00:39:11Yep.
00:39:11It's too soon for tomorrow, too late for tonight.
00:39:16That's why I'm shaking and pacing like I forgot my life.
00:39:23I wrote the show and I've lived the life.
00:39:29The sky looks so vacant on these kind of nights.
00:39:39It's gone when you're placing your cautious hand in mine.
00:39:51Never maintaining the illusion that we are going to be all right.
00:40:00So sleep on me, sleep on me, one day I'm going to get it right.
00:40:06So sleep on me, sleep on, I'm going to make it up to your kind of guy.
00:40:12Trying to be, trying to be someone who you like.
00:40:18Oh, sleep on me, sleep on, I'm a stranger back to sight.
00:40:25Hey.
00:40:26Wow.
00:40:27Thank you so much.
00:40:29I appreciate it.
00:40:30I felt like I was at his show.
00:40:31I love it.
00:40:32Yeah.
00:40:32All right, Jake.
00:40:33So you know you took a big chance.
00:40:36Keep those vocals just as you started out at the beginning strong.
00:40:39Keep it all the way through.
00:40:42But as a songwriter to a songwriter, you did well.
00:40:45Thank you so much.
00:40:46Really kind of you guys.
00:40:51You could hear him in a studio and like.
00:40:54Lock him right there.
00:40:56It's like watching young Bruce Springsteen.
00:40:59There you go.
00:40:59Paul Simon.
00:41:00There you go.
00:41:01Dylan.
00:41:01I don't know, he gave the artist.
00:41:03He's an artist.
00:41:04Sleep on me, sleep on me.
00:41:07Da, da, da, da, da.
00:41:10Kessie, I liked it.
00:41:22I'm Brooks.
00:41:23I'm from Bel Air, Maryland.
00:41:25I'm going to be singing Everywhere, Everything because family is everywhere and they mean everything.
00:41:36I love this song.
00:41:42Two bodies riddled with scars from our pretense.
00:41:48And you're twine in a car's dirty bike seat.
00:41:53Stare at a driving screen now.
00:41:59It's been a long year.
00:42:03And all of our books pages dog year.
00:42:07We'd write out the ends of our wrong steer.
00:42:12And forget to read.
00:42:16This is one of the most unique voices I've ever heard in my life.
00:42:20Yet the sun was collapsing.
00:42:26Until the seas rose.
00:42:29And the buildings came crashing.
00:42:37Everywhere, everything.
00:42:40When I love you, till we're food for the worms to eat.
00:42:44Till our fingers decompose.
00:42:49Keep my hands in yours.
00:42:54Try slowly.
00:42:57Know every route in this county.
00:43:00Maybe that ain't such a bad thing.
00:43:05Maybe that ain't such a bad thing.
00:43:06Tell you where not to speak.
00:43:13Tell you where not to speak.
00:43:14Everywhere, everything.
00:43:16Love you, till we're food for the worms to eat.
00:43:20Till our fingers decompose.
00:43:25Keep my hands in yours.
00:43:32Keep my hands in yours.
00:43:36Yeah.
00:43:37What in the world?
00:43:38What did that happen?
00:43:41What?
00:43:42What did that happen?
00:43:43Oh, bruh.
00:43:46Every time you open your mouth and sing, I want more.
00:43:49I feel like we've seen you already, like, kind of stepping in, getting a little more confidence
00:43:55in yourself.
00:43:56Just keep leaning into that.
00:43:58And it's so fun to watch.
00:43:59And it's so fun to listen to.
00:44:01Thank you so much.
00:44:02There you go.
00:44:03There you go.
00:44:04Woo!
00:44:07It's like, thanks.
00:44:08Thanks, Kai.
00:44:10It's just so beautiful.
00:44:11Charlie!
00:44:12Like...
00:44:14I'm obsessed with him.
00:44:15So unassuming.
00:44:16And I watched this crowd over here, they weren't expecting that to come out.
00:44:19What kind of alien, unexpected, crazy voice was that?
00:44:24Yeah, I never saw that.
00:44:24Whee!
00:44:25Where'd that voice come from?
00:44:26Something like that.
00:44:27I've never heard a tone like that.
00:44:32Welcome back.
00:44:34As our Ohana round continues, Lionel checks in on the families.
00:44:38I love watching this, boy.
00:44:40I don't...
00:44:41It's just agonizing as parents.
00:44:43Who might be struggling with tonight's decision to award one platinum ticket.
00:44:48I don't know what y'all are going through, but hang in there, y'all.
00:44:51I know.
00:44:52They're all doing so incredible.
00:44:54Yeah.
00:44:55Everyone's doing amazing.
00:44:57Fightfully!
00:44:59Yeah!
00:45:04Fightfully!
00:45:05Fightfully!
00:45:10You better sing it!
00:45:12You better sing it!
00:45:13Thank you so much.
00:45:14Great, big boy.
00:45:14Love you.
00:45:15Well, we are keeping tabs on everybody on that piece of paper.
00:45:18Yeah.
00:45:18Yeah.
00:45:18So we're gonna vote based on our notes.
00:45:21We're very serious.
00:45:23I'll tell you, it's very difficult.
00:45:25And the second platinum ticket decision belongs to the industry experts.
00:45:30The truth is, everybody deserves a shot.
00:45:32The talent is so high that everyone literally deserves this.
00:45:35But who are we gonna give it to?
00:45:37It ain't about how fast I get there.
00:45:41It ain't about what's waiting on the other side.
00:45:51Yeah!
00:45:52We got it!
00:45:54Yeah!
00:46:00the third platinum ticket will be chosen by the idols themselves i just see exceptional talent
00:46:07and i just don't know how i'm gonna narrow that down at all i don't i don't know
00:46:12when everything's meant to be bold i just want you to know who i am i just want you to
00:46:24know
00:46:33who i am
00:46:50it feels insane to be in the top 30 there's a lot of pressure knowing that 10 people are gonna
00:46:55go
00:46:55home one two yeah sounds good my dad for this round suggested photograph by ed sheeran ed sheeran has
00:47:01always been one of my favorite singers he had a stutter when he was younger and he's been super
00:47:06open about it it's crazy it's like the perfect song i relate to it in so many ways i'm dedicating
00:47:11this
00:47:11song to my grandpa um he passed away six years ago but he was a photographer and he spent so
00:47:19much of
00:47:19his life capturing the most important moments of other people's lives i just felt like i could
00:47:26really be myself around him and we could laugh with each other even though he can't be here taking
00:47:35pictures of me uh i know he's watching right now looking back at photos of him reminds me of the
00:47:41love
00:47:41that my whole family shared with him i'm gonna be thinking about him and just reminding the world of
00:47:46how how great he was
00:47:56loving can hurt
00:48:01loving can hurt sometimes
00:48:05it is the only thing that i know
00:48:12it is the only thing that makes us feel alive
00:48:23we keep this love in our photograph we make his memories for ourselves when our eyes are never closing hearts
00:48:36are never broken times forever frozen
00:48:40so you can keep me inside the pocket of your ripped cheese holding me closer till our eyes meet you
00:48:55won't ever be alone
00:48:58wait for me to come home wait for me to come home wait for me to come home
00:49:12Oh, when I'm away, I will remember how you kissed me
00:49:28Under the lamppost back on 6th street
00:49:33Hearing you whisper through the phone
00:49:40Oh, wait for me to come home
00:49:46Oh, my God!
00:49:49Oh, my God!
00:49:54Ugh, I mean, it's honest, and it's real, and it's believable,
00:50:00and it's just beautiful.
00:50:02Thank you so much.
00:50:03Thank you, guys.
00:50:08That's insane.
00:50:10Insane vocal.
00:50:11I love listening to them talk about it.
00:50:14He was so consistent, start to finish.
00:50:15He went viral already, and I can see why, you know?
00:50:19You can tell when somebody's humble, the way he's standing up here.
00:50:22I think that matters a lot.
00:50:23It now comes down to who cuts through.
00:50:26Yeah.
00:50:34Hello, hello, everyone, my name is Sheldon Riley, and I'm from Australia.
00:50:38I just want to quickly say how beautiful it is to me to see all of you family here for
00:50:43this God-given talent over this side.
00:50:45I know what the sacrifice is to be here.
00:50:48Unfortunately, I don't have family here with me today.
00:50:52I actually haven't had family with me in a long time on this music journey of mine.
00:50:58Sorry.
00:51:02Sorry.
00:51:05Sometimes in life, when you are not handed the right cards and put in the right family with the right
00:51:12people, you have to build your own family and your own home, and that's what Ohana is to me.
00:51:18So, uh, I'm really grateful to be here, and thank you for having me, and uh, thank you for being
00:51:23my little family here with me, so, yeah.
00:51:30I'm singing To Build a Home by Patrick Watson.
00:51:33It's about building that home for yourself, that place where you don't feel alone.
00:51:38I think a big reason why I've come to American Idol is that I've found that for myself, and I've
00:51:43built my own Ohana, so it feels like the perfect song to celebrate everyone that's made that happen.
00:51:47There is a house built out of stone Oh, this is a place where I, I don't feel alone Oh,
00:52:07this is a place where I, where I feel at home
00:52:22Oh, this, it does.
00:52:26I think it does.
00:52:36It does.
00:52:38Oh
00:52:52Yeah
00:53:21Oh
00:53:30I
00:53:35Do
00:53:36I
00:53:37Do
00:53:39No
00:53:41I
00:53:42Build a
00:53:44Home
00:53:56So sorry
00:53:57You good?
00:53:59Yeah I'm good, I'm good
00:54:01Yeah
00:54:02You have so much talent and range and power in your vocals
00:54:08I feel like your brain just gets in the way
00:54:12I feel like you're kind of building up some walls in front of us every time you sing
00:54:19But you don't need to do that because you're enough
00:54:22Thank you, you're here
00:54:26That was some words of wisdom right there
00:54:29It's just gonna be a mind game I have to kind of work through
00:54:33I don't know the industry's been really nasty to me
00:54:36I've had to put walls up for a long time
00:54:38Um
00:54:40I think
00:54:41That what is going to come out of this experience for him
00:54:45He'll actually find himself
00:54:47Yeah
00:54:48Carrie that was good
00:54:49You better preach
00:54:49That was so good
00:54:51That was, that was deep
00:55:02My name is Julian Kalel, I'm 19 years old from El Paso, Texas
00:55:06And I wrote this song called Surrender
00:55:09I auditioned with this song
00:55:10For my very, very first audition
00:55:12My family was there
00:55:13Feels like it was only yesterday that I was in that room with those judges
00:55:17When I wrote the song Surrender
00:55:19I was really, really down
00:55:22So I went to my dad
00:55:23And he told me
00:55:24That anxiety, the fear, whatever's out of your control
00:55:27Let it stay out of your control
00:55:29It's not worth your fear
00:55:31He was the one that said
00:55:33Surrender
00:55:34Surrender those feelings
00:55:36Not only were we able to help him reach lighter place
00:55:40It actually turned into a song
00:55:48To see him arrive on this stage
00:55:52This is everything that we've prayed for
00:55:55I just want to dedicate this song to you, Papa
00:55:58Thank you for always being by my side
00:56:01Through my absolute worst and my best
00:56:04And I love you
00:56:04Love you, Michael
00:56:05Bye
00:56:06We kissed the cross
00:56:08We kissed the cross
00:56:34Drown my thoughts with kerosene
00:56:38Drown my thoughts with kerosene
00:56:40Bring my fears to my sleep
00:56:44Oh, wow
00:56:45Tired of fighting
00:56:46Tired of keeping up the side
00:56:49Now I'm a couple times in
00:56:52Memories of flooding by
00:56:53So I surrender
00:56:57If it's all that I've waged
00:57:00If it's all that I've waged
00:57:00I'll raise the flag
00:57:01But fate is innocent
00:57:04Oh, I'm tired of death
00:57:08So I'll let it go, my soul and all that's left
00:57:12But I hope I'll pass your steps
00:57:15And I'll be gone without a sound
00:57:19When my heart fails me and I'm not around
00:57:22Floating on the paths I used to cross
00:57:26If something stops me
00:57:29If something stops me
00:57:29Guess I've found
00:57:30The story's dead
00:57:31And it's all clear now
00:57:33The only feeling bigger than love is lost
00:57:36So I told you
00:57:40If it's all that I've waged
00:57:43I'll raise the flag
00:57:44And fate is innocent
00:57:46And you know I'm tired of death
00:57:49Oh, I'm tired of death
00:57:55Oh, I'm tired of death
00:58:00Oh, I surrender
00:58:07Oh, I surrender
00:58:10That's an artist
00:58:11That is an artist
00:58:12Bravo!
00:58:14Wow!
00:58:16Bravissimo!
00:58:17You're so solid
00:58:18I mean, I've heard you do that song before
00:58:20And the fact that you've written that song
00:58:23Just even some of the changes in the chord progression
00:58:26Are so mature and far beyond your age
00:58:30And you just got the star magic
00:58:33One of my favorite performances of the night
00:58:35Yeah
00:58:35Love you
00:58:36Thank you so much
00:58:37Thank you
00:58:38To get the opportunity to even play that song
00:58:40On a stage like this
00:58:42I'm just glad that I never gave up
00:58:43It's come full circle
00:58:45For him to share it with his sister
00:58:47Just made it all the more special
00:58:49It just makes me so, so thankful
00:58:51To be loved by my parents and my family
00:58:54And I'm just so grateful
00:59:02Just beeping
00:59:03Hold on one second
00:59:04Takes me back to the construction days
00:59:07Back it up
00:59:09My name's Cutter Bradley
00:59:11I'm from Florence, Alabama
00:59:12Florence, Alabama
00:59:13I know where you're from
00:59:14I used to be a welder and a machinist
00:59:16So I went to college for that
00:59:18I've worked many jobs
00:59:20From carpentry, welding, to construction
00:59:23But music, ever since I did music
00:59:25Something was just poking at me
00:59:27Like I gotta see how far I can take it
00:59:29I'll be singing some Jason Aldean
00:59:31Amarillo Sky
00:59:32And the reason I picked that song
00:59:34Is because it's a song about hard work
00:59:36Dedicating it to my parents right here
00:59:37Cause they showed me what hard work is
00:59:39And it's rubbed off on me
00:59:41Cause I'm hard working for my dreams right now
00:59:43So
00:59:44Thanks
00:59:45That's right
00:59:48This is that tempo I was hoping for
00:59:50I love it
00:59:51He gets up before the dawn
00:59:54Cracks and lunch and a thermos full of coffee
01:00:00It's another day in the dusty haze
01:00:03The burning rays are wearing down his body
01:00:09The pace is worth the price of gold
01:00:12It's the cheapest thing he's ever sold
01:00:15Come on now
01:00:17He's still holding on
01:00:20Just takes a tractor another round
01:00:24Pulls a plow across the ground
01:00:27Sends up another prayer
01:00:31He says
01:00:32Lord, I never come clean
01:00:35I never ask why
01:00:36Please don't let my dreams run dry
01:00:41Underneath
01:00:42Underneath this
01:00:44Amarillo sky
01:00:46But
01:00:48Hung out
01:00:48He's still holding on
01:00:49In the dusty haze
01:00:51And he wiel part in the comedy
01:01:02And I can see
01:01:06Whoah
01:01:12этого
01:01:13And amazing Samarito sky.
01:01:20Thank y'all.
01:01:25Great song choice for you.
01:01:27And I tell you, rocking overalls in Hawaii.
01:01:30I tell you what, that's pretty amazing.
01:01:33You really impressed me with where you went vocally.
01:01:37I enjoyed it. Great job.
01:01:38Thank you so much. Thank y'all.
01:01:41Taking the part, playing it, swinging it around,
01:01:43and then going out to the audience, I was like,
01:01:46I see you, I see you.
01:01:48Somebody crushing down there?
01:01:50Yes.
01:01:52Carrie's crushing too.
01:01:53I said no.
01:01:54I see where you're coming from.
01:01:57And you are correct, ma'am.
01:02:00With the added pressure of not only the judges,
01:02:02but also the industry experts deciding their fate,
01:02:06the weight of the moment is getting to some.
01:02:08The industry experts are going to be voting for us,
01:02:12which is scary.
01:02:13She was missing was a little bit of confidence.
01:02:15You can tell she's one of the younger performers.
01:02:17She doesn't have the experience.
01:02:19There'll absolutely be more pressure.
01:02:21I thought she was a superstar.
01:02:22I agree.
01:02:25Whoa.
01:02:26That's a steal wrong.
01:02:27It's super scary to know that they're going to be watching
01:02:29and judging.
01:02:30It looked like she was a little bored.
01:02:33No.
01:02:33No.
01:02:34What are you talking about?
01:02:35Oh, my goodness.
01:02:36That was storytelling.
01:02:38I wish you would have looked over here,
01:02:40but I thought she brought the power to the song.
01:02:43Oh, now you're over.
01:02:43That was beautiful.
01:02:44Okay.
01:02:44The way she said it sounds better than you saying.
01:02:48That's what you said, yeah.
01:02:49Definitely got to bring my A game.
01:02:51I got to, you know, I got to do something.
01:02:54You got it, Mike.
01:02:56You got it, Mike.
01:02:57You got it.
01:02:57I don't know.
01:02:59If you got a chance, take it.
01:03:03Take it while you got a chance.
01:03:07You got a dream, chase it.
01:03:10Cause a dream won't chase you back.
01:03:13You're gonna love somebody.
01:03:16Hold on as long and strong.
01:03:18As close as you can.
01:03:20Until you can.
01:03:23You're just a baby.
01:03:25It just felt like it was something was a little off.
01:03:28Maybe it wasn't his best performance.
01:03:30I was seeing like a country Bieber with the, you know,
01:03:35the little hair flip.
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:38That's exactly right!
01:03:41Shirley, the co-editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone,
01:03:44is gonna be here.
01:03:45I am like freaking out.
01:03:50Hi, everyone.
01:03:51My name is Kendall.
01:03:52And today I'm actually singing a song that I wrote.
01:03:55It's called Woman of Me.
01:03:57I wrote it for my mom.
01:03:58I can't look at her too long or I will immediately cry.
01:04:01My mom is my favorite person in the whole entire world.
01:04:04She has been a backbone and just a rock in my life.
01:04:11But growing up, we had a tendency to clash.
01:04:15I was a pretty rebellious kid.
01:04:16Like I started hanging around with the wrong people.
01:04:19Dropped out of school.
01:04:20Moved all the way to the other side of the country in LA.
01:04:23I needed to go and explore the world and learn and fall flat on my face.
01:04:28And I'm sure that, like, I'm sure that really broke her heart.
01:04:33You know?
01:04:37Whoa.
01:04:39I think that sometimes before you can watch someone fly, you have to let them hit rock bottom.
01:04:46And it was the hardest thing that I've ever done.
01:04:48She was 18 years old and she needed to go.
01:04:52She needed to figure it out.
01:04:55Having a mother that loved me enough to let me go, but be standing there with open arms when I
01:05:03ran back is a gratitude I can't fully even express.
01:05:09And so I tried with this song.
01:05:11And I just, I really want to honor her with this.
01:05:14I really want her to understand just how special she is to me.
01:05:26I'm the daughter of a God-fearing woman.
01:05:31Countless nights she probably laid there awake.
01:05:35To her surprise I did everything I shouldn't.
01:05:40On a wound, both hearts would break.
01:05:46From time to time, there's a look in her eyes.
01:05:52She didn't think she did it right.
01:05:55Oh, God.
01:05:55She was the light when there was no light I could see.
01:06:01She gave me a reason to fight.
01:06:06She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me.
01:06:12Taught me all my wrong from rights.
01:06:16I couldn't fit all of my thanks in a bottle.
01:06:22It'd break before it drift into a sea.
01:06:27She was a girl before she was a woman.
01:06:33Now she's made a woman of me.
01:06:36Very good.
01:06:39Very good.
01:06:39She waved my eyes when the world turned its back on me.
01:06:44Taught me all my wrong from rights.
01:06:48I couldn't fit all of my thanks in a bottle.
01:06:54It'd break before it drift into a sea.
01:06:59She was a girl before she was a woman.
01:07:04Now she's made a woman.
01:07:07She's made a woman, she's made a woman, she's made a woman, of me.
01:07:21That songwriting is incredible.
01:07:25Oh, Kendall, I just want to hear more of your songs.
01:07:29You're such a great storyteller, and you have the voice to back it all up.
01:07:35So, if this was truly a moment meant for you right now.
01:07:40Thank you so much.
01:07:47Perfect, no complaints. That's my American Idol.
01:07:50I can't either. I'm so proud of her.
01:07:53I couldn't even look at my mom like I knew I would cry, but she was right there on my
01:07:57heart.
01:07:58And I just like felt her, and that was such a special moment.
01:08:01I wish I could do it again and again and again.
01:08:09Come on, let's give it up for Philmen Lee.
01:08:14Tough, tough.
01:08:16I'll be singing All I Want by Kodalon, dedicated to my great grandmother.
01:08:21Her name was Mama Rice to me, but to everybody else she was Nancy.
01:08:24The song that he picked, it means a lot to the family.
01:08:28She was a huge supporter of me, and this is one of the songs.
01:08:32This is one of the songs she loved for me to sing to her.
01:08:36I sung it in hospice, unfortunately, before she passed away.
01:08:39So, hopefully, y'all like it.
01:08:43All right, all right.
01:08:44Wow, yeah.
01:08:45All right, you got this, baby.
01:08:49All I want is nothing more
01:08:56To hear you knocking at my door
01:09:03Cause if I could see your face once more
01:09:09I could die a happy man, I'm sure
01:09:16And if you love me
01:09:19Would you leave me
01:09:24Take my body
01:09:27Take my body
01:09:31And all I want is
01:09:35And all I need is
01:09:40To find somebody
01:09:42I'll find somebody
01:09:48Like you
01:09:54If you love me
01:09:58Find you leave me
01:10:02Take my body
01:10:05Take my body
01:10:10And all I want is
01:10:14And all I need is
01:10:18Find somebody
01:10:21I'll find somebody
01:10:27Like you
01:10:38I love you
01:10:39I love you, boy
01:10:42I love you, boy
01:10:45Wow
01:10:46Wow
01:10:47Getting so proud there, buddy
01:10:48And he's so sweet
01:10:50Yeah, he is
01:10:51He's got that grit
01:10:52Teddy Swims
01:10:53Chris Stapleton
01:10:54You just took us on a journey
01:10:56You brought us in
01:10:57When it was meant to feel intense
01:11:00And then on the soaring notes
01:11:03You kind of took us to this whole other place
01:11:05Where we could just kind of feel that swell
01:11:08That's a gift
01:11:09Great job
01:11:10Thank you, man
01:11:10Great job
01:11:11Thank you so much
01:11:12I realized his voice could go that high for that long
01:11:16Oh, my gosh
01:11:17To be able to take a song
01:11:18That is usually taken in a completely different direction
01:11:21And bring it here
01:11:22Was magic
01:11:24So proud of it
01:11:27I can't talk right now
01:11:28I can't even breathe
01:11:30That was amazing
01:11:32To make it to the top 30
01:11:34It feels, like, incredible
01:11:38You are meant to be here
01:11:40Thank you
01:11:40I'm just enjoying it
01:11:41And soaking it in every which way
01:11:43You looking for me?
01:11:44For the old home around
01:11:45I picked Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo
01:11:47I will dedicate this song today
01:11:49To my lovely mother
01:11:51That's in the audience
01:11:52Over here to the side
01:11:53My mom
01:11:55She has always stood up for me
01:11:57She has always paved the way for me
01:11:59Been there every step of the way
01:12:01I had Micaiah
01:12:04When I was at college
01:12:05Single mom
01:12:06And so
01:12:07There were times where
01:12:09I didn't know how
01:12:10I was gonna do some things
01:12:12We would come home from school
01:12:14And then we would go to my grandparents' house
01:12:15And eat dinner
01:12:16I didn't know then
01:12:17As a child
01:12:18That was solely because
01:12:19We didn't have food
01:12:22Everybody hits rough spots
01:12:23But I hit a rough one
01:12:25It was a really dark time
01:12:27For her to allow me to solely
01:12:30Be a child
01:12:31And have no worries
01:12:33She never let us see her suffer
01:12:39When my mom hears me perform this song
01:12:42I hope she feels that
01:12:44I will always be here for her
01:12:46Through every step of the way
01:12:47Same way she was there for me
01:12:49And that one day
01:12:50This all will pay off
01:12:52I've been walking
01:12:56With my face turned to the sun
01:13:12It's about to get dirty
01:13:15It's about to get dirty
01:13:16Watch the clouds roll back
01:13:19And the stars fill the night
01:13:22That's when I wanna stand up
01:13:26Take my people with me
01:13:29Together we are going
01:13:32To a brand new home
01:13:40And I know
01:13:42What's around the bend
