00:00Hello and welcome back to episode 5 of our 5-day race to claim the most train stations in Taiwan.
00:05Right now, we're halfway through the game, and most of the map has already filled up.
00:09Ben and Adam spread their territory pretty thin, heading in a loop around the island,
00:12while Mike and I have spent most of the game up north fortifying the area around Taipei.
00:16This could end up being a problem for Ben and Adam, who are currently heading north on the isolated East
00:20Coast line.
00:21If they don't have enough chips to break past our big wall around Taipei once they reach the top of
00:26that line,
00:26they might be forced to retreat and waste hours heading backwards before they can find anything new to claim.
00:32Knowing that they need to go big, Ben and Adam just bet a lot on a call-your-shot challenge
00:36in Yuli at the end of the last episode.
00:38If they can pull it off, it might be enough to break into our territory, but they're taking a big
00:42risk.
00:42If they fail, there's almost no way for them to get the chips that they need anywhere else on this
00:47line.
00:47So, let's see what happens.
00:52All right, Ben, well, I've realized that the train that we want to get out of here leaves in, like,
00:5640 minutes,
00:57and we're pretty far from the station, so I think we've got to try to do this fast.
01:02Okay, we're coming up on the Continental Divide here.
01:07I will say that it is quite windy.
01:09The wind is definitely freaking me out.
01:12Yeah, it's windier than it was in that 7-11, that's for sure.
01:16Yeah.
01:17Oh, look, okay.
01:18This is where the Eurasian plate meets the Philippine sea plate.
01:26Look, they've got this little thing, so I can stand in both at once.
01:28Does it feel awesome?
01:29I feel awesome!
01:31You all feel even more awesome?
01:32Yeah.
01:33120 chips.
01:34Let me try and measure it out.
01:36I'm going to do a little bit of practice.
01:49Oh, f***.
02:10What do you think these guys are for?
02:12Yeah, is this for erosion from the sea or anti-tank?
02:16Speaking of which, if you zoom in out there...
02:19It's Du Bois.
02:20That is some sort of Navy vessel.
02:23It's Du Bois.
02:24Okay, our balance is up to 141.
02:27Their balance is down to 33.
02:29They do have more stations right now, but only by 18.
02:32So our big choice right now is, do we go south or do we go north?
02:36Looking at where they are, and under the idea of collecting as many stations as we can,
02:42I think it would be really great to go towards them, dropping fives on every single one of
02:48those stations.
02:49Alternatively, we could keep going past them and drop fives all the way down.
02:54If they only have 30, they could go six stations.
02:57I mean, my thinking is, I don't want to ever be further from the steels than they are.
03:01Right.
03:01Going beyond them gives them the advantage to come north and grab the steels.
03:05Because it's very possible that what happened yesterday happens again, and we have to quickly
03:09respond to get to a steel before them.
03:11Yeah.
03:12I'm tempted to go north.
03:13I think we could build a big wall here, you know, bolster what we just dropped.
03:18So as we're leaving, just dropping chips.
03:21Because then we'll force them to go back down around the south, which is going to take
03:25them a huge amount of time.
03:26Yeah.
03:26And everything right now is in the north.
03:28Yeah.
03:28So box them in in the south based on their low balance right now.
03:31Yeah.
03:32And once we've fortified that, we almost don't ever have to come back this way.
03:36Right.
03:36I don't know if we can ever make it 100% mathematically impossible for them to progress north.
03:40No, but it makes it so expensive to progress further.
03:43Where it strategically just doesn't make sense.
03:46Yeah.
03:46Should we go to the station, get on the next train north, and then we can do some math to
03:50figure
03:50out our bar deposits.
03:51Sounds good.
03:52Cooking.
03:54Going north.
03:54Take a peek at the south here because I don't know how this game is going to go, and this
03:59may be the furthest south we get if we're strongholding the north.
04:03It's a little bit of a shame because this coast is gorgeous.
04:05It's really nice.
04:06I'm sure Ben and Adam have some great views right now, too.
04:08I hope they do.
04:13The wind is definitely scaring me.
04:16You got to start from this biker and then get basically equidistant.
04:21Okay.
04:21Oh, dude, the wind.
04:23Okay, here?
04:25Yeah.
04:26Okay, I'm going to start.
04:27Okay.
04:30Oh, dude, the wind.
04:42You're doing good.
04:47The wind is scaring the shit out of me.
04:52Okay, take your time.
04:54Take your time.
04:56We made a quick victory stop for donuts.
04:59Oh, yeah.
04:59These do look really good.
05:00They were frying them in, like, a wok.
05:02Super fresh.
05:04That's really good.
05:05Mm.
05:06Yeah.
05:07Oh, yeah.
05:09That is an excellent donut.
05:11Mm-hmm.
05:12We made a lot of good decisions in this town.
05:14All right.
05:15Goodbye, my guy.
05:16Thanks for having us.
05:18How awesome is this station?
05:20Really cool modern shape to it under the mountains.
05:23I'm very impressed for a town of this size.
05:26Yeah.
05:27Basically, Sam and I are just walking around going,
05:29cool.
05:30Look at that.
05:30That's my experience with Taiwan so far, basically.
05:33Oh, look at this.
05:33Oh, donut burgers.
05:34Oh, look at this.
05:35Oh, wow.
05:36Like, look at this.
05:39Look at that.
05:40Oh.
05:44How far do I need to get?
05:45You'll just tell me?
05:46Yeah.
05:47It's the fourth biker.
06:06One more biker.
06:08Yeah.
06:08I'm going to say it, right?
06:10Yeah.
06:12One more biker.
06:13One more biker.
06:17And complete.
06:25Pretty good stuff.
06:28120 chips.
06:31That could change everything.
06:34That's really big.
06:35They earned 120 chips.
06:38Jeez!
06:39Oh, that was a massive call your shot again, I guess.
06:43Those guys are going big.
06:45Maybe we want to make some really risky call your shots.
06:48It's like it's clearly working out for them.
06:50But we got to go bigger.
06:51I think this is a signal the game is changing.
06:53We need to get back to the station.
06:55Is there any chance that we can make that train?
06:56I think we got to just go and try to make it.
07:00All right, Ben, the new challenge is 50 chip.
07:04Oh, it's way down, way south, way down.
07:07That's going to be one for them.
07:08It's in Kaohsiung. It's in our territory.
07:10So that's actually good.
07:11That means that we have some chips back there.
07:14I just don't want to go back that way.
07:15If we have to retreat.
07:17What do you think?
07:17Because that now gives them a huge chip advantage
07:20that we thought we had the chip advantage.
07:23Yeah.
07:23It's actually brought them pretty much back to equal with us,
07:26but they still hold more stations.
07:27Not only that, but they've used a lot more to secure their stations.
07:31I think, honestly, the only thing that we have right now
07:33going in our favor is a better map of challenges to go to.
07:37Question is, do we still bolster with fives on each stop?
07:41I want to say yes, but obviously the percentages
07:45to their chips in pocket at the moment makes it...
07:48Well, it's like, I don't think we're going to dissuade them
07:51from coming this way at this point.
07:52No, when they have so much.
07:53Yeah.
07:54Yeah.
07:54So it's like, if they want to come this way,
07:56they're going to come this way.
07:58Train's coming.
08:01Train.
08:08I got all these, you know, local trains all around the country
08:11that are basically like metros.
08:12They have a great style.
08:15Again, vintage styling, but in like perfect condition.
08:32Look, we just really got to hope that we can make this train honestly.
08:35Ugh, dude, I don't know if it's possible.
08:38It leaves in 17 minutes.
08:40It says we're a 31 minute walk away.
08:43Because the next one's not for what, like an hour?
08:45Yeah, we lose like a whole hour.
08:47And that's an hour where they're going to be able to fortify and earn more.
08:51We could go back to Khao Siung or whatever
08:53now that there's a challenge down there.
08:54I just don't think that's the right one.
08:55No, no, not for 50 chips that far away.
09:00I think we want to go to the challenge that they failed.
09:02Yeah, I definitely think that that's what we want to do.
09:05As long as we can break into their territory
09:07before they're able to do another steal.
09:10Yeah.
09:10I think the question's going to be,
09:12are we going to be able to afford to break into their territory up there?
09:15Well, look, when we get to the train station,
09:17let's look at the map and look at the state of the board.
09:19Yeah.
09:20And see if we can get up there.
09:22Okay.
09:23We've got to make some decisions pretty soon
09:25because we're about to get to the stations that we didn't fortify with fives.
09:29Okay.
09:29Well, they're not actually that close to the train station.
09:33They do have a train north leaving in four minutes,
09:36but it doesn't look like they're close enough to take that.
09:40So that makes me think that they don't intend to go north.
09:42We thought that Ben and Adam were intentionally missing their train heading north
09:45and were going to start retreating instead.
09:47So we figured we didn't need to do any fortifying after all
09:49and left the next station with just one chip.
09:52But then we realized that Ben and Adam were waiting for the train north
09:55and had just missed the one we thought they were going to take,
09:57which meant that they now had plenty of time to fortify the line
10:00before they could get to our territory.
10:02Okay.
10:02Now back to the show.
10:03I think I'm game for going to five for the next.
10:07There's only three more stations.
10:09And we've only missed once.
10:10We'd be pretty close to the maximum defenses we could build.
10:14And we could build more after that.
10:16I think that's worth it.
10:18Because I think the thing is, if they're going north,
10:21then they're either going to have to spend a ton of budget for big stations.
10:25Exactly.
10:26Or they're going to have to turn south and waste a ton of time.
10:29Yeah.
10:30So I think it's worth it, kind of regardless of what they do.
10:33Great.
10:45Well, Ben, we're at the station and we were not even close to making that train.
10:51No, that train is long gone.
10:52That train left 15 beautiful minutes ago.
10:55There's another one.
10:56In an hour.
10:57All right.
10:58Well, why don't you sit down?
11:00Why don't you have a little beer, huh?
11:02Yeah, I don't...
11:03Take a load off.
11:04I don't know about that.
11:06What are they doing?
11:07Here's the good news.
11:09They did not go down and try to claim the stuff between here and there.
11:14It's true.
11:15There are a whole...
11:16I mean, how many stations, like...
11:17I mean, there's like 16 stations that we can go through for cheap up to the challenge that they failed.
11:25Yeah.
11:26But even if they fived all of those, we could afford to get through it now.
11:29So if we can do all of that before a steal, we could break in all the way up to
11:33there.
11:34And get to the challenge that they failed.
11:35Now, could we get past that challenge and all the way up to Taipei?
11:39There's a lot more stations there.
11:41That's like 26 more stations.
11:43That is a question for later.
11:45I think we should just go straight there.
11:46I think that that is the plan.
11:48Go to the challenge that they failed.
11:50Break through a little bit of their territory.
11:51I think that's gotta be the move.
11:53I am feeling...
11:55Feeling a lot better now that we...
11:57Have 120 chips.
11:58Got those chips.
12:00Yeah.
12:03Cheers.
12:03Cheers.
12:04Let's try it.
12:05Should we both, two people that hate beer, try this beer?
12:09Maybe we'll love this one.
12:11Wait, wait, wait.
12:12Are we there?
12:14Yeah, we're there.
12:22Today we'll be trying buckskin beer.
12:24We both don't like beer.
12:30Beer is just not good, Ben.
12:48Let's go.
12:48Time to go.
12:51Time to go.
12:52All right, Ben.
12:53So, are we gonna just put down one?
12:57Well, actually, hold on.
12:58Let's see what they're...
12:59What's...
13:00What they're doing?
13:01Because they're heading north.
13:02Are they fortifying those lines?
13:03Oh, yeah.
13:04Yeah.
13:05They've got five on a bunch of these.
13:08Okay.
13:09I mean, that is sort of what we expected.
13:11It looks like they might be going for that 50 coin challenge up there.
13:19I don't know.
13:20They're about to get to the station where they would stop for them.
13:23They're about to get to the station, they're about to get to the station.
13:51When they're up with us, it's hot.
13:52They're about to get to the station.
13:53you want them. I don't think they're allowed to pick a lot. Oh yeah, leave them there, but you've
13:57got to put more down. Yeah. So this challenge is the one that we saw from the train earlier,
14:04at the giant crayons. Oh, crayons. I was going to say there's not a lot around here. There's crayons
14:10and there's coal. Grayons, as I called them. How cool is that? It's cool. Whoa. Okay, they just
14:18left Yuli. They're officially headed north. They are. Okay, good call. Okay, so we made the right
14:23decision in the end to reinforce the chips. It's still a question of whether we can really dissuade
14:29them because they already have a high balance. If they're successful with the challenge they're
14:32going to, they're going to have a huge balance. If we want to get to Taipei by the end of
14:38the day
14:38again, the last train to give us sort of an hour there would leave in 54 minutes. And it's an
14:46express train, so we need a reservation. We need a couple minutes to do that. Right.
14:50So 45 minutes. Yeah. The good news is that they cannot make it to Taipei by the end of the
14:55day
14:55from their challenge, assuming they stop at the challenge. Ben, let me just, let me just
15:03for one second. Tell me. If they're stopping to do a challenge.
15:10Oh, are you saying go past them and do the steal?
15:12We get to the Taipei steal before them. Or at the same time as them. I mean, I don't think,
15:21we don't have enough to break through to Taipei all the way. I don't know if that's true.
15:27Do we? Let's see. Well, we have a whole lot of chips. Let's see. Let's look. Let me add it
15:32up,
15:33okay? Can you take out your calculator, please? You know our games are good when we bust out the
15:37calculator. I think the main thing is that I would love to be on that train in about 50 minutes.
15:42Okay. So hopefully this is something we can do relatively fast, but relatively well,
15:47because the problem is if we fail this, I think that they're heading this way and it just makes
15:51this, we already have a fail challenge near here. It makes it more valuable for them.
15:54So once again, we can't fail this. Okay. What do you think, Sam? You a big fan of crayons?
16:00I like these crayons. Yeah.
16:04Stressed. Who's this guy? Crayon man? Yeah. Ready? Ready.
16:11Win Crayon Masterminds.
16:17Win Crayon Mastermind. Acquire some crayons. You will use these crayons to play a game of
16:23Mastermind. You get one attempt of seven guesses. Otherwise, the challenge has failed. We'll
16:27explain the rules of Mastermind in a few minutes. Do you know the game Mastermind? No.
16:32It's like a puzzle. Random sequence. I think you have six colors. It's a random generated sequence
16:38of four. It's like, do you manage to put the right ones in the right position? How good are
16:44you at like a logic puzzles? Yeah. Pretty decent. Okay. I'm not great. So this might be one.
16:49I thought this would be up your alley. No, I'm not. I'm not very good at puzzles. Okay. So we
16:53need
16:53crayons. And the deal when we planned this was that we're not going inside because this is a children's
17:00thing. Yeah.
17:06We're going to walk back. So my children learn strategy. I'm learning the rules first.
17:15So we, we could beat them to Taipei. If we used every single chip that we have, we could get
17:25to like
17:25just outside of Taipei station. I think it's a, it's a Nangang station. It would use all of our chips.
17:35Now, here's the thing. They can beat us to there, but only if they get on a train in a
17:44half hour.
17:45I think let's keep an eye on them. If they miss that train and therefore can't beat us to Taipei,
17:52we should ride all the way to Taipei, beat them with the steel and do the steel. I think if
17:58they get
17:58on that train, then we stick to our original plan. I wonder if they realize that they need to get
18:04on
18:04that train. Okay. So they're at the station of their next challenge now. So it's going to be
18:21really interesting to see if they keep going, if they keep going, if they keep going, I think we
18:27aren't worried about them nabbing the steel from us today. There's still maybe a world in which we
18:33want to make a run for it. Yep. First, I think let's get a seat reservation as if we want
18:38to go
18:38to Taipei. Yeah. And then let's get this challenge done. Yeah. Hi. Can we get a seat reservation on
18:44this to Taipei? Can we do a standing? Okay. That's good. Great. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
18:56Okay. Are you feeling like a mastermind?
18:59I'm feeling like a mind. I don't think I've mastered it quite yet.
19:03All right. You want to get started? Yeah. I would like a practice round.
19:07All right. While Mike does this in practice, let's explain how mastermind works.
19:11I've randomly generated a secret code of four colors. In this case, that code is green, orange,
19:16green, blue. To start out, Mike has no information, so he'll just make a random guess. He's going with
19:21purple, purple, yellow, yellow. None of those colors are in the code at all, so Mike gets nothing.
19:26But now he knows there are no purples and no yellows. Now it's a second guess. Orange,
19:31orange, blue, blue. He now gets two black markers. A black marker means that Mike has the right color
19:37in the right spot. We know the secret code, so we know he has the second and fourth ones right.
19:43But Mike doesn't know which ones are right, just that two are correct. Now it's his third guess.
19:48Green, green, blue, blue. Mike gets two black markers, for the first and fourth spot being right,
19:53and a white marker, which means Mike has the right color in there, but in the wrong place.
19:57In this case, it's this green, which should be in the third spot.
20:00Okay, for the fourth guess, he's only making one change, swapping that first green for a pink.
20:05That's wrong, so now he gets one black marker and one white marker. He's now further off,
20:09but he's learned something. The pink crayon lost him a black marker. That means it must have been
20:14right before, when it was green. For the fifth guess, Mike puts the green back at the start,
20:18and moves the other green to the third spot. That's great, he's got three of them. And then
20:22he looks back at his second try and realizes that the second orange might have been right.
20:27So he tries it, and boom, he's done it. He has one mastermind in only five guesses.
20:32Pretty good, considering for our real try, he gets seven.
20:35I mean, I feel like I logicked it, but with a little bit of luck.
20:39Do you want to do another practice round?
20:41No, I think I understand the game.
20:43Okay.
20:43And I don't think taking longer to try.
20:46I feel like we overpracticed last time, and it would be great to catch this train.
20:49Yeah.
20:50Okay, so get ready for a real round.
20:53Look, it's so beautiful, Van.
20:55We're on the water.
20:58If we get the right angle, it'll look like we're in Spirited Way.
21:01It'll look like we're just taking the train over the water.
21:03Ooh.
21:05I'm Totoro.
21:06Wait, no, that's not.
21:07No, no, no.
21:08That's a different hero.
21:09That's different.
21:10I believe in you.
21:11You just got to think the shit out of this, Mike.
21:14No, I actually think the opposite.
21:16It is to.
21:17You got to vibe it.
21:18Exactly.
21:22Lock it in?
21:23Lock it in.
21:24You get one of each.
21:25One of each.
21:26That's not too helpful.
21:29Gets us somewhere.
21:30Well, let's do one of each, and then we'll introduce two greens.
21:35You get three whites.
21:37Okay, we're getting somewhere with that.
21:39So we lost our position.
21:40So one of those came out.
21:43We did gain one with the green.
21:45So we know there's a green in there.
21:46So I'm going to move those over, and we're going to take two greens and go like that.
21:53I'll pull them down a bit.
21:54You get two of these guys and one of these guys.
21:56And one of these.
21:57Okay, so one is still out of place.
21:59Two are in place.
22:00So first one, we had one right and one wrong.
22:03But when I moved it over, they were all wrong.
22:07So let's do this.
22:11I don't know, a blue, and see that.
22:14Three whites.
22:16Oh, interesting.
22:17Okay.
22:18So we've gone a little bit backwards, but I did switch some things, so we know a little
22:22bit more now.
22:23I don't want to rush you, but to inform you, we have seven minutes to our drink.
22:27So we had one right the first go.
22:29We had two right.
22:30And now we're...
22:31That one had one right.
22:33Okay, so I moved that.
22:33So that's probably over here.
22:36This, if one of those was right, that was correct, so maybe it's going to be this.
22:40Those were all in a long place, but it's not a blue, so let's try an orange.
22:45All right.
22:45Hawk it in.
22:46Yeah, this is our number five.
22:48So we'll have two more guesses after this.
22:52We got three.
22:54Okay.
22:55So I'm going to guess that it's not orange, which means I'm going to guess it's pink.
23:01Yeah.
23:01You're happy with that?
23:02Yeah.
23:04You want it?
23:06We got it!
23:10What?
23:12There we go.
23:13Logic.
23:14All right, let's get cleared up and let's get on that train.
23:17Challenge successful.
23:19I was really hoping they would fail that because we're so close to it.
23:25It's possible that we're just going to have to backtrack if we can't get enough to break
23:28through.
23:29Look, we just have to see what the map looks like once we're done with that challenge because
23:33we're about to get another challenge right now.
23:35We're generating the next challenge.
23:37Woo!
23:38It's in Taipei.
23:39Let me tell you, it's in Taipei.
23:46All the more reason for us to want to break through to Taipei.
23:50And I would say sort of double bad news.
23:53It seems like they are getting on that train, which means we cannot beat them to Taipei and
23:57do the awesome thing we wanted to do.
23:59Not only can we not beat them to Taipei, but they're probably going to have a chance to
24:03reinforce.
24:03They're going to be able to fortify now so we wouldn't be able to get there anymore then.
24:07Which does mean that we will have to get off in what?
24:12Jou-xie.
24:13A jousie.
24:14Jousie.
24:15I mean, I don't know why.
24:16I just corrected your pronunciation.
24:17I have no idea.
24:18You sounded very confident.
24:19The place where they failed their challenge.
24:21Yeah.
24:22Ugh.
24:36Take some seats for a little while.
24:39Okay.
24:42So, checking on them now.
24:45They are moving and arriving in Hualien City, which means...
24:50They must have skipped the challenge.
24:51Yeah.
24:51That means they're making a big run north.
24:54So, we definitely want to keep dropping chips on all the stations as we pass through.
24:59We want to make this as expensive as possible.
25:01Let me do some math.
25:02Okay.
25:04One, two, three, 41.
25:06Times six.
25:08We can make it mathematically possible for them to get to Taipei.
25:10I mean, that sounds good.
25:12If we just dump budget at every station, they cannot get to Taipei.
25:17And what that means, they have to go all the way back.
25:21Yeah.
25:23Yeah.
25:23That 4-H.
25:26I love being in control.
25:41And what are they up to?
25:43I don't know.
25:44So, presumably, they're going back to Taipei.
25:46Yeah.
25:47It's just like, they have this big bounty of challenges in Taipei.
25:52And it's just, they've completely blocked it off from us.
25:55Yeah.
25:56And look, they're continuing to fortify.
25:58Yeah.
25:59Yeah.
26:00They're headed back up now.
26:01They're fortifying.
26:02Yeah.
26:02I mean, they're just building up.
26:03So, it's going to be, I mean, it's going to be very expensive for us to get to Jaxi, but
26:06we can do it at least.
26:08Okay, we need to switch seats, but.
26:09So, I did the math.
26:11They do have the budget to get to Jaxi, where our failed challenge is.
26:15Mm.
26:15So, they could do a challenge there.
26:16They could do our challenge.
26:18Right.
26:18The Jaxi challenge.
26:18Which is now worth more.
26:20Which is now worth 12 points for a successful answer.
26:22So, it's possible that that would get them to, you know, there is another challenge.
26:27Which, the variable reward challenge is there.
26:29I think, if I've done my math right, for them to get from the Jaxi failed challenge.
26:35Yes.
26:35To the variable challenge passed it.
26:38Right.
26:38They would need to answer.
26:40They would need 60 coins, meaning they would need to answer five questions.
26:44Right.
26:44Cool.
26:45I find that hard to believe.
26:47Mm-hmm.
26:47Three, I think, is doable, to be honest.
26:49I think we kind of just fumbled it.
26:51Yes.
26:51Four starts to get very challenging.
26:52I don't know if you can do five.
26:54No, no, no.
26:55But they're going to be, I feel like they're going to be high risk, high reward mentality with it.
26:59So, I feel like they'll make a really high bet.
27:01Because they've been really hot lately.
27:02And then maybe fail.
27:03Yes.
27:04We do have to keep in mind, they failed the challenge we're about to do.
27:07Which would indicate that it's hard.
27:10Yeah.
27:10But it is a call your shot.
27:12Which is true.
27:13So, we could be a little bit more modest with it.
27:15I mean, is there a world in which we want to go for the other variable reward challenge to prevent
27:20them from getting it?
27:21Yeah, potentially.
27:22Because I think they're seeing that as their opportunity right now.
27:25If we go to the variable reward closer, right, and we take it from the map, as long as we
27:33leave there before they would go through there, right, I think we could 100% prevent them from getting tie
27:44-tie pay.
27:44Okay.
27:45Because, assuming they can't get more than 60 points.
27:48Right.
27:49And then they can't get to the variable.
27:52Which means they then have to turn around and go and waste all the way back.
27:56Which I think is huge.
27:58I think if we go to the variable, it's check me.
28:03All right.
28:05There's...
28:06Flip.
28:06Chin-ching.
28:08Flip.
28:10Six chips down.
28:12We have started flipping in their territory at perfect expense.
28:15I just flipped the switch.
28:17Good job.
28:19It's a song.
28:20That's a song that I was referencing.
28:24That's what it looks like.
28:25Yeah, that's what it looks like when we're playing.
28:27That's what we're looking at.
28:28It looks prettier when you watch it.
28:29There's a cool map and stuff.
28:31Yeah, we just have Google sheets.
28:33It's not right that I had to relearn Excel.
28:48Hey, Sam.
28:49Yes.
28:49Shepard some more coins down on the station.
28:51Oh, yeah.
28:52Oh, yeah.
28:53Give them all the coins.
28:54Oh, yeah.
28:56That's another four.
29:01It doesn't matter how small or rural the station, we're putting down four.
29:09Four more.
29:14We're back at the cat village.
29:16And even here, we're dropping four.
29:20Wow.
29:21Mike and Sam's territory is beautiful.
29:24Oh, no, that way, that way, that way.
29:25Well, it's our territory, man.
29:42Oh, that's where they did their challenge.
29:59It makes you feel any better.
30:01We've got a huge advantage on how many stations we've got.
30:04It's crazy that we're in the lead by so much, but I feel like we're losing because we're in such
30:09a worse position.
30:10Yeah.
30:11Well, it's just like we are in the lead, but we could be about to just lose a ton of
30:17time.
30:18Yeah.
30:18Let that leave your mind.
30:20We've got to focus on this challenge.
30:22Maybe we can get enough on this challenge to break through.
30:25Okay.
30:25Let's go.
30:27Let's go.
30:27Let's go.
30:28Welcome to Dyeongchii.
30:32How do we get out of here?
30:40A lot going on out here.
30:42That garbage truck sings such a loud song.
30:44You guys are a boy, dog.
31:00Arriving in Nguan Nguan, a town so nice they named it twice.
31:10Welcome to Nguan Nguan.
31:11This is like we've been delivered straight into the jungle.
31:13Oh, yeah.
31:14It's humid here.
31:15It is.
31:16What is here?
31:17A challenge, I guess.
31:18Yeah.
31:19It's just outside of the station.
31:20So let's get there and then what we do, it kind of might depend on what they do.
31:27As to whether we do the challenge or not?
31:29As to whether we do it, how we do it.
31:31I'll explain more in a second, but I think there's some complex strategy here.
31:35All right.
31:36They're approaching the springs.
31:39Okay.
31:39So they are doing the challenge.
31:40We're definitely doing the challenge.
31:42Yeah.
31:42We have that confirmed.
31:54All right.
31:56Well, we made it.
31:57This does appear to be, according to the signs, a hot spring park, which is a little more my speed.
32:03Yeah.
32:03Seems nice.
32:04I'm sick of the monkey mountain bullshit.
32:06But anyway, let's see what they failed.
32:09Be in the hot seat.
32:16Be in the hot seat.
32:17You are now at one of Geoxy's many famous hot springs, but you aren't here to relax.
32:22You are in the hot seat.
32:23While in the hot spring, one team member must correctly answer as many trivia questions as they can in 60
32:28seconds.
32:29You can earn eight chips per correctly answered question, but you must call your shot beforehand.
32:34If you do not reach the number of correct answers you predicted, you earn nothing and the challenge has failed.
32:38The question asker can read the questions before you call your shot, but cannot discuss any specifics with their teammate.
32:45Which of us should ask and which should answer?
32:48The thing is, we don't know what these questions are about, right?
32:51We don't.
32:51Like, if they were like, this is Lego Star Wars trivia, I would be like, put me in.
32:58You do like a trivia league, don't you?
33:00I'm a trivia boy.
33:01I, this is not a thing that I do.
33:03Okay.
33:04I think we will have you answer the questions and I will read the questions and we will determine how
33:11many should we.
33:11Let's maybe go find the hot spring while you read the questions and then we can discuss.
33:18Let's, let me take a look.
33:20So I'm trying to think.
33:21So like one factor for us is the map is really advantageous to us right now.
33:27Right.
33:28Meaning, in some ways we don't want to mess with it.
33:31Right.
33:32Because we don't want something to flop down that would make their route to Taipei a lot easier.
33:38But on the other hand, if they're successful in the challenge with enough budget to get here, we definitely need
33:44to wipe the challenge from the map.
33:46Right.
33:47We want to get it off the map.
33:48Yeah.
33:49Wow.
33:51So if we, do we want to wait to pull the challenge until maybe we hear what they've done?
34:00Okay.
34:01Does that make sense?
34:02I mean, we'd burn time and we only have so long until the last train back to Taipei.
34:07They're doing a quiz.
34:09They literally have one minute to answer as many questions as they can.
34:12So it shouldn't take too long.
34:13It won't take long.
34:14So we should definitely wait.
34:15I think we should wait.
34:17Okay.
34:18Let's get, let's find a waiting spot.
34:20Lots of hot spring action over here.
34:22We should just find an area where we're going to be the least disruptive.
34:26Sure.
34:26Oh my God.
34:27They have a little dog at the hot spring.
34:30So Ben, how many, how many questions are we looking at total here?
34:34So there are 13.
34:3513.
34:35Okay.
34:36But we only have 60 seconds.
34:38We only have 60 seconds.
34:39So, you know.
34:40And you have to have, you have to ask the question too.
34:43Yeah.
34:43I mean, do you think that there is a chance that we could get, that I could get 10 of
34:47them?
34:48That's what we would need to get to Taipei.
34:49Six seconds per question.
34:51I mean, it seems.
34:54Could we practice with like some made up questions?
34:57How fast can we get some?
34:59We can vibe out like how long does it take you to read a question and for us to answer.
35:04Yeah.
35:05Uh, let me just pull up some random trivia questions.
35:08Okay.
35:09And go.
35:10How many colors are in the rainbow?
35:14Seven.
35:14What insects never sleep?
35:17Uh, I don't know.
35:18Bees?
35:19Flies?
35:19Mosquitoes?
35:21There's a lot of mosquitoes here.
35:22Yeah.
35:23Kind of annoying.
35:24You're getting bit.
35:27Oh, my own blood.
35:30What is the only animal with four knees?
35:33Four knees.
35:35Uh, elephant.
35:36I ran out of random trivia questions.
35:38Book up.
35:39So we did six and four knees.
35:40So we did.
35:41But those were easier than the ones we would be dealing with.
35:45We were not even on pace for me to answer 10 with the easy ones that we tried.
35:50So what would be a reasonable number?
35:52Like six?
35:53Six, ten seconds per question.
35:54Yeah.
35:55It's also possible that they fail their challenge.
35:58Have they stopped?
35:59They've stopped.
36:00I mean, it actually wouldn't be crazy, Ben.
36:03To see if they fail.
36:03To see if they fail.
36:05If they fail the challenge, I think we should go for what we need to get to that.
36:10Okay.
36:11How many stations is that?
36:12In order to get there, we would only need 58 more coins.
36:17So we would just need five questions.
36:19I think five seems pretty safe.
36:21I mean, keep in mind, though, we would need at that challenge to earn 54 chips.
36:31Right.
36:31So I think we could probably pull off six.
36:34I don't think it's, if you think it's like the difference between five and six could do it.
36:40It's very hard to say.
36:42I think we should wait and see if they fail their challenge.
36:47Unless they're waiting us out right now.
36:50All right.
36:51The waiting game.
36:54We don't want to waste too much time.
36:57If they succeed, we definitely should do this.
36:59Right.
37:00If they succeed with enough budget to get here, which is 58, a win of 58, which for them would
37:06mean answering five questions.
37:07We 100% do this and we do whatever we need to wipe it off the board.
37:11Even, you know, the minimum bet.
37:13Right.
37:13If they fail, that's when things get interesting.
37:16I mean, it should be five to ten minutes maximum.
37:20Unless they realize the value of wasting time.
37:30Gosh, these, they're making us wait and these mosquitoes are eating us alive out here.
37:34Yeah.
37:41All right, they're really taking their time.
37:43Do you think they're strategically delaying?
37:45Yeah.
37:46Maybe they, like, at least want to make us miss that next train out of here or something.
37:50Yeah.
37:50If we miss that, we can still get, like, most of the way to Taipei.
37:55But we don't make it, we won't make it tonight.
37:57No, which is probably fine as long as they don't get some crazy points haul now in a way where
38:03them being on the train that we want to take to Taipei would be a problem.
38:08Or getting in front of us because I think they could have an express train whereas we're on a local
38:11stop.
38:13I think we could get six.
38:15You think six?
38:16I think we could probably get six.
38:18Five is all we need to get to that next one.
38:20I just don't think that the difference between five or six is that much, right, in terms of difficulty.
38:26Like, this is one of those things where I'm like, I don't know, maybe I'm like really, you know.
38:30Okay, let's go for six.
38:33Our train's in the station now.
38:34There goes our ride.
38:36Oh no, that's our train.
38:37So that confirms that.
38:39Okay, well, I guess we are not making it all the way to Taipei Central tonight.
38:48Oh, it's a lot hotter than I thought it would be.
38:50Oh my god.
38:51Let's see you're in the hot seat.
38:52Jesus.
38:53Are they all like that?
38:55No.
38:55No, this one's normal.
38:57In the hot spring?
38:58I'm in the spring.
38:59Feeling hot?
39:00Yeah.
39:02Okay.
39:02Ready?
39:03Okay.
39:04Go.
39:06Taiwanese film director Ang Lee has won two Best Director Oscars.
39:09Name a film he directed.
39:10A film, Life of Pi.
39:12Correct.
39:13What notable jet lag filming locale anagrams to Ethan Slopp?
39:19Pass.
39:20At the time of writing, what is the most viewed video on the Jet Lag the Game YouTube channel?
39:25Tag, episode one.
39:26Tag, season one, episode one.
39:27Yep.
39:27Including this one, how many people have completed in at least one full season of Jet Lag the Game?
39:34Me, you, Sam, Michael.
39:38Three winners, three losers.
39:41Ten.
39:42Correct.
39:43Taiwan is one of four Asian tigers, four economies that grew and industrialized rapidly between the 1950s and 1980s.
39:48Name one of the other three.
39:49Singapore.
39:50Yep.
39:52Taiwan is the ninth most densely populated country in the world per Wikipedia.
39:55Name one that outranked it.
39:56Bangladesh.
39:57Yep.
39:58In what decade was the...
39:59Time.
40:05That was five.
40:15Well, we ought to let them know.
40:17Oh, they failed!
40:19We knew it!
40:20We knew it!
40:22Thank you, of course, and as always, for watching this episode on Nebula.
40:27Why not listen to the Layover podcast?
40:30Why not?
40:31Why not just do it?
40:32Do it.
40:33Maybe you're thinking about me.
40:34Should I do it?
40:35Do it.
40:35Why not just do it?
40:37And this is a heck of an episode to recap.
40:39Quite an episode to recap.
40:40A lot of stuff happened in this one.
40:43Yeah, I feel like we glossed over that.
40:45Mistakes were made.
40:45I feel like we glossed over how juicy this episode was.
40:48Mistakes were made.
40:49Speaking of juice...
40:52Yep, good transition.
40:53Speaking of juice.
40:54Perfect transition.
40:55You know, creepy places, I feel like they can have various juicy things.
41:00You can bring a little bit of juice in there.
41:03You can just sip on some juice.
41:04Or like, I don't know, just like damp, sealing juices.
41:07Sure, sure.
41:08So this is my transition into talking about the Nebula Explosive series by A Bit Frank, A Bit Obscure.
41:16Perfect transition.
41:16Yes, which, where she goes on location to various creepy places and basically shows them.
41:24And they are creepy.
41:26That is kind of the selling point.
41:27But if you like creepy places and going places but through the screen, you should watch this.
41:33Yeah, it's on location, so it's kind of like...
41:35It's got some jet lag energy.
41:37Yeah, I'm trying to always be like, it's like jet lag, but...
41:39And this one is sort of like, it's like jet lag, but if it was freaking creepy.
41:42Well, it was kind of like, we remember that really creepy night in Japan.
41:45We didn't show that much of on camera.
41:47Do we think that it's fair to say that stuff is like jet lag if it just means that they
41:51physically went somewhere?
