Did you spot the switching lightsabers and familiar cyborg couch in Revenge of the Sith?
Transcript
00:00From satisfying cameos sneaking into a great many frames, to blatant movie mistakes on
00:06show for all to see, these are those episode 3 facts, easter eggs and brilliant beats slash
00:12blunders you may just have overlooked a long time ago and you know the rest.
00:17Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and here are 20 things you somehow missed in Star Wars
00:22Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith.
00:25Number 20 The Millennium Falcon
00:26Revenge of the Sith gets underway with one of the most thrilling space skirmishes the
00:31entire Skywalker saga has ever brought into existence and it's after the dust has settled
00:36on Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi's daring rescue of Palpatine and improvised landing of
00:42an entire cruiser on Coruscant when an iconic ship in its own right glides onto the scene.
00:47If you look closely at the scene depicting the Jedi heroes hopping off a transporter post-fiery
00:52landing, you'll spot Han Solo and Chewbacca's future mode of trusty transport in the
00:56Millennium Falcon landing in the same locale at this very moment.
01:00Lovely stuff.
01:01Number 19 A Foreshadowy Goodbye
01:04Clearly relishing the opportunity to hint at the inevitable fate fans already knew was
01:08on the horizon for the likes of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi throughout his prequel set
01:13of features, George Lucas was at it again when it came time for The Apprentice to bid farewell
01:18to his master before they went their separate ways early on in Episode 3.
01:22With the troubled youngster being shrouded in shadow during this conversation with his
01:26patient brother-like figure, and the latter very much being illuminated by light, it's
01:31clear the Star Wars creator was alluding to what lay ahead for both characters down the
01:35road.
01:36Kenobi's goodbye old friend had long acted as a rather significant beat in its own right
01:41too, with those pretty much being the last words the Jedi Master would utter to his Padawan
01:45before he finally crossed over into the darkness.
01:47And the development of Kenobi later building on this fateful farewell with his heart-wrenching
01:52goodbye, Darth, after their climactic rematch of the century in Obi-Wan Kenobi, has only
01:57made this scene that little more impactful as time has gone by.
02:00Number 18 Obi-Wan Kenobi is quite the prolific pilot
02:04It's not exactly a secret that Obi-Wan Kenobi isn't what you class as the most enthusiastic
02:09fighter pilot in the galaxy.
02:11However, a quick look at Kenobi's Jedi starfighter of choice, the Aetna II Actis Class Light Interceptor,
02:17tells the story of a pilot who is much more comfortable behind a steering wheel than you
02:21may have expected.
02:23As seen when the ship is very much parked aboard a Separatist cruiser, Kenobi appears to have
02:27been keeping count of his numerous enemy kills whilst flying the Crimson Bird in space.
02:32And by looking at the shape of said ship markings, it appears the top rows consist of the number
02:36of droid tri-fighters Kenobi has dispatched, with the bottom being dedicated to the impressive
02:41number of CIS destroyers Providence Class that he's helped take out.
02:45Number 17 It was the first ever PG-13 Star Wars movie.
02:49The visuals of everything from Anakin alluding to the cutting down of innocent children, to
02:54a severely melted Palpatine letting loose UNLIMITED POWER, were enough to guarantee a first for
03:00George Lucas' galaxy far, far away.
03:02As it goes, Revenge of the Sith holds the honour of being the first ever Star Wars feature
03:07to head into theatres with a PG-13 certificate.
03:10Oddly enough though, neither of the aforementioned moments was said to have actually contributed
03:14towards the film being released under this rating, with it being the moment Anakin is
03:18burned to a crisp on Mustafar that was responsible for the eventual PG-13 decision.
03:23Number 16 A Familiar Cyborg Cough
03:26Ever wondered what goes into bringing the disturbing splutters of a deadly cyborg to life on the big
03:31screen? Well it turns out that all you need is a once in a generation movie maker with a bad
03:35chest infection and a microphone. With George Lucas himself suffering from bronchitis at the
03:40time of shooting, and creating the robotic separatist general, the creator decided that his chesty
03:45cough wouldn't feel out of place, tumbling out of General Grievous' artificial body over the course
03:50of the flick. So every time you hear Grievous let loose one of his notable throat bursts in the
03:55flick, you're actually taking in the coughs of the creator himself after choosing to head into work
03:59under the weather. What a hero.
04:01Number 15 The Death Star Nods
04:03After being spotted in the background on Geonosis during Attack of the Clones,
04:08Chief Palpatine's ominous plans to forge the galaxy's most terrifying superweapon were once
04:12again on show during Revenge of the Sith within the secret Sith's office.
04:16And while the sight of Palp's having a quick scan of his Death Star plans via red hologram,
04:21because why would a Sith in hiding use the blue alternative air? It was pretty tough to miss in
04:25episode 3. There's every chance you overlook the fact the Death Star makes its presence known in
04:30his office decor too. As Anakin enters the space to converse with his future master, you'll see
04:35the two tables sandwiching him, both boasting what appears to be the image of the eventual space
04:40station.
04:41Number 14 More Lucas Family Cameos
04:43George Lucas doesn't half enjoy stuffing his family into his flicks under many a different alien
04:48disguise. Revenge of the Sith was no different, with Katie Lucas rounding off her trilogy of cameo
04:53appearances by showing up as Chi Ikwe Papanoida at the opera Anakin and Palpatine take in during the
04:59feature, and Jet Lucas returning as Panawan Jedi Zet Jukasa before getting gunned down by clones in
05:05front of Bail Organa. Only this time, instead of leaving all the fun to his youngsters, George himself
05:10got in on the action, beside his daughter as Baron Neoluiski Papanoida, living his best intergalactic
05:16life whilst painted in blue during the aforementioned opera scene.
05:20Number 13 A Few Lightsaber Mishaps
05:22With the sheer amount of attention being paid to ensuring the state-of-the-art visual effects
05:27were on point, and the story being told was one able to grip and captivate the masses for years
05:31to come, a few unfortunate mistakes elsewhere were always likely to wiggle into the episode 3 end
05:37product. Most notably on two separate occasions, it appears the person in charge with continuity
05:41and all props on set dropped the ball a touch when it came to a thrilling lightsaber duel.
05:46First up, when Palpatine is seen battling away with Mace Windu and a number of other Jedi
05:50masters, upon being uncovered as the Dark Lord of the Sith, the diabolical villain's
05:55lightsaber switches from his own distinct variation of the weapon to Anakin Skywalker's
06:00unmistakable hilt. This was likely due to the fact a scene depicting Palps taking up Anakin's
06:05weapon in the battle was later changed up, but the shot in question was still left in the
06:09end product. Elsewhere, as Anakin and Obi-Wan duel on Mustafar, another bizarre saberswap goes down as
06:15the former attempts to impale the latter with his own blade, before it then appearing to be
06:19Skywalker's weapon doing the attempted scorching. How weird.
06:22Number 12, a clone trooper boxing a battle droid. Let it be known that there are more than a few
06:27ways
06:27to pick off a battle droid in the heat of battle. If you slow down the action a touch as
06:32Obi-Wan hops on
06:33his trusty space lizard to chase after General Grievous on Utapau, a sequence showing off a
06:38CGI clone trooper boxing the stuffing out of a battle droid can be seen going down within the
06:43chaotic locale. Turns out some of these Django copies had the eye of the tiger too.
06:47Number 11, Qui-Gon and Anakin share a funeral theme.
06:51Music has always acted as a seriously powerful tool in the crafting of many a Star Wars story,
06:56with George Lucas regularly using motifs as a way of foreshadowing a dark fate for a set of
07:01characters. That was definitely the case when it came to the long-awaited introduction of Darth
07:06Vader in his final cyborg form late in the day, with a rather familiar piece of music alluding
07:11to a conclusion Obi-Wan Kenobi was having trouble coming to terms with. With the same music used
07:16during the cremation of Master Qui-Gon Jinn being present in the scene involving Vader going on a
07:21mad one after hearing of his beloved Padme Amidala being supposedly killed by his hand,
07:26Lucas seems to be musically hinting at Anakin being very much dead and gone in this moment,
07:30much like Jinn was in The Phantom Menace. How deep.
07:34Number 10, A Deliberately Uncomfortable Vader Suit.
07:37There's actually a very good reason Hayden Christensen resembled a toddler figuring out
07:41how to execute his very first steps during the closing stages of Revenge of the Sith.
07:45In an effort to showcase the fact that Anakin Skywalker was still coming to terms with his
07:50brand new way of being, Lucas went out of his way to make the iconic suit deliberately top-heavy
07:55by doing things like making the legendary helmet particularly weighty. And this very much helped give off
08:00the impression that Skywalker wasn't too accustomed to his new suit in the debuting of his new look.
08:05Number 9, Hayden Christensen Packed on the Weight for Anakin.
08:09Speaking of Hayden Christensen being put through the ringer when artificially breathing some life
08:13into Anakin Skywalker slash Darth Vader in Revenge of the Sith, it wasn't simply a case of the disturbed
08:18Jedi actor rocking back up to set in the same physical form he had for Attack of the Clones when
08:23the time
08:24came to shoot this prequel closer. With Lucas wanting Christensen to resemble more of an intimidating force
08:29throughout the third episode, the actor was tasked with piling on some pounds and bulking up for his
08:34return. And after putting away a reported six meals a day in the lead up to shooting, Hayden was
08:39said to have piled on a whopping 24 pounds by the time he hulked up on the big screen in
08:432005.
08:45It often goes overlooked just how jacked Christensen genuinely got for this final prequel showing,
08:50and this shift from 160 pounds to 185 pounds no doubt aided him during those aforementioned Heavy
08:56Vader sequences too. Number 8, More visual effects were short than any other prequel.
09:01George Lucas most definitely doubled down on his love of all things computer generated when it came
09:06to blasting his prequel adventures into hyperspace. And while The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones
09:11were clearly not lacking in the CGI and VFX department, coming in with a jaw-dropping 1950 and
09:182200 visual effects shots on screen respectively, Revenge of the Sith took things to another level
09:24entirely in 2005. Boasting a frankly insane 2400 visual effects shots throughout, it's often forgotten
09:31that episode 3 easily sits as the most effect-heavy flick in Lucas' back catalogue, absolutely blowing
09:37the more humbled 360 uses of visual effects seen in A New Hope back in 1977 out of the VFX
09:44waters.
09:44And according to visual effects supervisor John Noll, even The Force Awakens only came in with just
09:50under 2000 visual effects shots. Number 7, C-3PO's Frustrating Armor.
09:55Despite not exactly stealing the show and his few fleeting appearances in the trilogy closer,
10:00Anthony Daniels' C-3PO actually played host to one of the most unexpected dilemmas the crew behind
10:05Revenge of the Sith had to overcome. That being the fact his unmistakable golden armor just so
10:10happened to reflect a set stuffed with vibrant green and blue screens. With this in mind,
10:16the VFX squad behind episode 3 were forced to repaint all of 3PO's armor in post manually whenever he
10:22arrived on the scene to comfort Padme Amidala. This means every time you spot Daniels neurotically
10:27jolting around the scene within the flick, you're actually taking in some of the most subtle and
10:31soul-crushing CGI ever pumped into the galaxy. Number 6, Only 10 Men Wore Wookiee Suits.
10:36The return of one of the most cherished furballs the original trilogy had to offer, only this time
10:41alongside the rest of his fiery race, brought with it some of the most inspired costume design of its
10:46time. All in all though, Chewbacca's re-emergence beside a fleet of other passionate and courageous
10:51Wookiees on Kashyyyk only ever saw a grand total of 10 dudes boasting the hairiest torso in the galaxy
10:57throughout shooting. So how was George Lucas able to successfully build one of the most ferocious
11:01armies ever to charge into battle within the Star Wars universe? Well, yeah, you guessed it.
11:06After he'd thrown this lucky 10 souls into their Wookiee get-up, Lucas and his VFX team were able
11:11to duplicate the growling figures in post-production, after repositioning the actors on multiple occasions
11:17during a number of takes, and adding them back into the shot at a later date to make it look
11:21like
11:22there were more Wookiees present. You can never have too many, can you?
11:255. The second highest grossing movie of 2005 worldwide
11:29For the most part, it's usually safe to assume that if a year is boasting a brand new release
11:34from one of the biggest and most loved franchises ever to be unleashed on a movie theatre,
11:39said 12 month period won't likely see any other flick surpass its overall box office haul.
11:44And while that still was clearly the case domestically when it came to Revenge of the Sith's 2005 release,
11:49the same could not be said for its worldwide release.
11:52None other than those bumbling wizards and witches over in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World were actually
11:57able to capture more attention and dollars than George Lucas' last prequel outing,
12:02with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire beating out episode 3's $868 million splash,
12:08with a staggering $895 million made at the worldwide box office.
12:13Either way, 2005 definitely marked the year of the Dark Lords.
12:174. The Death Count
12:18While it may be stating the obvious a touch,
12:21a film boasting the complete and utter massacring of the Jedi Order,
12:24comes equipped with a frankly insane amount of death from start to finish.
12:28Just how many droids, Jedi, Sith and other innocent civilians perished over the course of
12:33George Lucas' deadly conclusion to his prequel set of flicks though?
12:36Well, according to the list of deaths wiki, when factoring in every battle droid punched to pieces,
12:41Jedi Master blasted out of a window, and heartbroken mother who passed on in childbirth,
12:46a whopping 535,788 entities didn't make it out of this one alive. Half. A. Million.
12:54In terms of who holds the unsettling honour of most kills in the feature,
12:58you won't be too shocked to discover Emperor Palpatine taking home the gold,
13:02with his murdering of 9,901 via his Order 66 declaration.
13:073. The 501st Legion
13:09And with said Order 66 culling in mind, those obedient stormtroopers seen cutting down many a
13:15youngling padawan and master within the Jedi Temple in Coruscant aren't just any old battalion of
13:20duplicate boys. The clone troopers decked out in undoubtedly awesome white and blue in this
13:25harrowing moment are none other than the 501st Legion, a group of soldiers commanded by Anakin
13:30Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano throughout the Clone Wars. Their on screen debut in the Star Wars universe via
13:36Revenge of the Sith in the first place though, was actually a way of saluting the real life Vader's
13:41fist fan organisation dedicated to creating screen accurate replicas of some of the galaxy's most
13:46legendary costumes. The organisation ran entirely by volunteers, has also gone on to help raise
13:52millions for charities all over the world. So this cool canon nod to the folks fighting the good
13:57fight in the real world was a sweet touch from Lucas and co. 2. The tiny amount of antagonist
14:03screentime Both Count Dooku and General Grievous
14:05played some rather vital parts in the final chapter of this pre-original trilogy set of tales,
14:10acting as physical pieces of foreshadowing towards Anakin Skywalker's eventual turn to the dark side.
14:16But away from Dooku representing a fallen Jedi, and Grievous foreshadowing the cyborg body heading
14:21Skywalker's way, you may be shocked to discover that these two despicable fiends were actually only
14:26present on screen for a grand total of 8 minutes combined. Now sure, a large chunk of the narrative
14:31is taken up by Anakin's descent into Diagnus, a process accelerated by Palpatine's villainous
14:37on-screen presence for 24 minutes 45 seconds of course, but it's still interesting to note how big
14:42an impact both Revenge of the Sith antagonists had on proceedings, despite their evident lack of real
14:47time to shine. 1. Lightsaber firsts
14:51With so many sacred Jedi and Sith weapons being brandished over the feature's massive 140-minute
14:57runtime, it was only natural for a few lightsaber firsts to pop up on the prequel screen throughout
15:02episode 3. First up, the scene depicting Mace Windu trying to arrest Sheev Palpatine with the
15:07help of a group of other Jedi Masters holds the honour of being the first and only Star Wars movie
15:11seen to possess four different lightsaber colours on show during a showdown, blue, green, red and purple,
15:18naturally. And another first and only occurrence can be spotted during Obi-Wan and Anakin's fateful
15:23Mustafar melee, with this duel amidst the flames being the only ever Star Wars movie scene depicting
15:29two, in this case blue, blades of the same colour going at it. And that's our list of any other
15:34cool
