00:00It was a pretty surreal moment to drive up on what was a full-blown disaster underway.
00:05I'm Tyler Smith. I'm here in Wailua, Hawaii.
00:07I'm sharing a story with the Dodo about the catastrophic floods that came here in my community.
00:12Can you just start and just like walk me through on your end what happened?
00:15I've been raining that night quite a bit.
00:17I just ran to my truck and started driving out there.
00:20I drove in through the ranch gates and there was really deep water
00:22and basically swam into that first paddock where the horse I'm responsible for is.
00:26So I got up on her and I rode her out of her paddock.
00:29So I had linked up with Levi and his guy Kelsey and hopped on his backhoe.
00:33Just for context, how do you explain who he is to you?
00:36Him and his family do a lot to take care of that ranch.
00:39They had also picked up a woman, Inga, out of the water that happened to have just been there.
00:42From there, me and Levi hopped in the water to start and pulled four horses out.
00:48The horses, could you sense that they were afraid?
00:52Yeah, they were definitely afraid.
00:54There was nowhere else for them to go.
00:55It was pretty disorienting, honestly.
00:57They didn't act particularly dangerous or anything considering the severity of the situation.
01:01And so I think the horses did handle themselves very well.
01:04It was certainly a lot for them to deal with.
01:08You all look so calm in the footage.
01:10Like you're just doing what needs to be done.
01:12I was concerned for the horses, for sure.
01:13It's always good when you're working with people that know what to do
01:16and there's just no questions asked.
01:17We had a good area to tie all the horses up in initially until we found a place for them
01:22to stay.
01:23And due to everyone's actions, everyone was okay.
01:26I've never seen anything like it.
