13:34Obviously, it's a wrong decision and it changes the course of the time.
13:37The referees, in the end, he chucked it and he decided that it wasn't and we agree with him.
13:45I think in the first half, we controlled the game quite well, I think, and had a few good opportunities
13:52to score, managed to score out of one of them.
13:56And then, I think in the second half, they started much better.
14:00Maybe deserved to get a goal eventually.
14:04And, yeah, tough game.
14:05We know it's a tough place to come.
14:07But, yeah, it's only half time.
14:08We are in an incredible position.
14:10Semi-final of the Champions League.
14:11We have to play in front of our people.
14:13It's in our hands.
14:14And that's it.
14:16And now recover and full on.
14:18But there's only one place to start.
14:20And, Stephen, we're going to start with you on the Eza penalty, which was given on the pitch and then
14:25obviously overruled.
14:27And there was a little bit of discord and disagreement when we were watching this live, wasn't there?
14:31Yeah, I think this is going to split opinion.
14:33I really do.
14:33I think there's going to be a lot of people watching at home thinking, I can see contact.
14:37I think when you see the initial sort of angle here, you do think there is a touch on Eza's
14:44foot.
14:45And you see it as he steps across there.
14:48I just don't think there's enough contact, if any, contact.
14:52Now, that one looks like there is enough.
14:54And it looks like there's clear contact.
14:56But you've got to challenge for the ball at some point.
14:59You've got to go toe-to-toe, if you like.
15:02That one there is the one that you watch and you think there's not enough contact.
15:07And Eza almost expects it to happen and invites the challenge and then goes down.
15:12And so, for me, I don't think there's enough to give a penalty in that incident.
15:17I think you've described that very, very well, but, like, in a kind of safe way.
15:20Because you don't think it's enough to give a penalty.
15:22But I think for most people, the discussion is around, is it enough to overturn the penalty?
15:26That's the issue.
15:27Yeah, because when we first saw it, and this is myself included, I thought, oh, you know, it's a penalty.
15:33But the more I sort of watched it back, like, that bit there makes it look like it's going to
15:37be really clear and obvious.
15:38And he's going to be stepping onto Eze's foot, onto Eberia's foot.
15:40But the fact is, like, it doesn't finish that way.
15:43Then you start to see some more angles and you start to sort of doubt yourself.
15:47And I think in some ways, the video system referee has probably done a good job by allowing the referee
15:50a chance to see it again.
15:51Yeah.
15:52And the referee could have said it's still a penalty.
15:54But the fact that he didn't means that he didn't see enough.
15:56Had he stuck with his decision, do you think, you know, it wouldn't have been perhaps on field, you know,
16:02and not gone and looked again.
16:04Do you think that would have been the fair decision?
16:07Would that have been right?
16:08Would you have been happy with that?
16:09I've got a bit lost now with what we're meant to be doing with penalties.
16:13To me, that isn't a clear and obvious error, which I think is still the bar.
16:16They may have changed it several times since this programme started.
16:19But that's not a clear and obvious error.
16:20You can see why he's made that decision.
16:22There is one angle where it looks like there's contact.
16:23Yeah.
16:23And there's a couple where, to be honest, you can't really tell because the shot's not right.
16:28I'm surprised it was overturned.
16:31Sorry, overturned by him, by the referee.
16:33Because you're talking about the VAR now.
16:35You're surprised that the VAR have called a no.
16:37No, no, it's the referee's decision.
16:38But it does seem to be the case that if the VAR calls the referee over.
16:41We could spend a lot more time on this.
16:42We've got loads of penalties.
16:43Oh, OK.
16:44What's next?
16:44Yeah.
16:45Well, we're going to go straight to Ben White's handball, actually.
16:47And, Nadim, you can have a little look at this.
16:49Because there is consistency in the inconsistent interpretation of the rules, isn't there?
16:54Yeah, there's a disappointing consistency with the way that UEFA handballs are given.
16:59And I think as far as the game goes, if your arm is anywhere away from body at all,
17:04it doesn't matter whether it flicks off your leg, you know, flicks off somebody else.
17:06If it hits your arm, it seems like the referee is going to give these decisions.
17:10And they seem very quick to be able to do so.
17:11And even we saw yesterday with Alphonso Davies, he's come off his leg and he's hit his arm.
17:17Ousmane Debele is adamant that's a penalty.
17:19If we're in the Premier League and we see that, that's not going to be given as a penalty.
17:22I think most people say that's not a penalty.
17:24But in Europe, the consistency is there.
17:26Because that was yesterday, this was today.
17:28And if there's another one in the next few games, we'll be given again.
17:30And to be fair to Arteta, he did say after the game that UEFA have been really consistent,
17:34that that is a penalty in UEFA competitions, which I think most of us probably disagree with.
17:38But what's strange for me is that it relies on a really strict interpretation of IFAB's rules,
17:43the body that sets the actual laws.
17:46UEFA seems to have taken that really literally, which I don't think they have to do.
17:50That's a conscious choice.
17:52But that feels to me like a punishment outweighing a crime.
17:54And it's not consistent with how we see the Premier League operate, is it?
17:58But obviously, we're going to break up the penalty incident, Stephen, actually.
18:02There is another one to come, don't worry.
18:03But you are going to look at the fact that actually the second half played out very differently for Atletico
18:07because of a tactical tweak.
18:09Yeah, and at half-time, they decided to take Simeone off and bring on Robin Lamont.
18:15And they went to a back five.
18:17And you see here, Luckman and Llorente were the wide players.
18:19Griezmann and Alvarez become the forward two.
18:22The link up between these two players.
18:23And it was almost 4v4, if you like, going forward.
18:27And it caused Arsenal problems.
18:29Luckman got in here.
18:30You see, Griezmann had an opportunity.
18:32As it falls back to him, it's a really good block from Gabriel.
18:35But the way that they set themselves up, they had the two wing-backs,
18:40but Ruggieri on this left-hand side and Llorente on the right.
18:43And Ruggieri's got brilliant movement.
18:45He's got athleticism.
18:46But Luckman's position, that touch is absolutely brilliant.
18:49But it causes a problem now for right-sided centre-half, right-back.
18:53They're scared of Luckman.
18:55And then Ruggieri plays that ball in.
18:56Griezmann hits the bar off this opportunity.
18:58So they were spreading the back line of Arsenal as much as they could in certain situations.
19:05And then you see the two forward players really stretching the game here.
19:08You'll see the way that Atletico players drop deep.
19:12And now you've got runners in behind.
19:14And you've got spaces in behind that midfield.
19:17Lovely little ball from Griezmann in behind.
19:19And then runners beyond.
19:20And it just felt that Atletico made sure that they isolated in 1v1 situations.
19:26Luckman possibly should do a little bit better here.
19:28Maybe has a little bit more time.
19:30But when you look at Luckman in 1v1 situations, he's just brilliant in here.
19:34Arsenal defend it well.
19:35But watch the way that they ring-fence it.
19:37They make it so difficult to get out.
19:40And then you'll see here, Anko steps in, wins the ball back.
19:43And then they're on the attack again.
19:45And then they get a strike and a goal from Molina.
19:47But the way that Arsenal sort of struggled in this second half was much to the credit of Diogo Simeone.
19:55Well, they were absolutely taken out of the game, weren't they?
19:57They were nullified.
19:58Any kind of threat that came from them.
19:59Look at that.
19:59You know, that is incredible.
20:00That is between the 45th and the 84th.
20:03Because actually they rallied a bit in the last 10 minutes or so, didn't they?
20:06Yeah, the Eze penalty actually seems to take the sting out of Atletico a little bit.
20:09They lost their way a little bit for maybe five or ten minutes after that.
20:12And had a bit of another sort of surge right towards the end.
20:16But I think in that sort of half an hour period, Simeone will have seen enough, particularly from Griezmann, to
20:22think they can hurt Arsenal in London.
20:24The question might have been, Julian Alvarez went off injured.
20:26If he doesn't play, that's a massive boost for Arsenal.
20:29He had four shots and eight touches in the opposition box, Griezmann.
20:32So, yeah, he really did in those 40 minutes or so come to life, didn't he, for them.
20:36It all started for Arsenal from Jokeres and a penalty that he won and then scored.
20:43Let's have a look at his first half, shall we?
20:45For sure, yeah.
20:46I think his first half was really good.
20:47And it's what Arsenal needed because it's a tough place to come.
20:49But you need some of that strength, some of that physicality and the direct play that he has here running
20:53down that left-hand side.
20:54Like Llorente, the full-back for Atletico Cheson there.
20:57He's big, he's strong, but Jokeres is stronger.
20:58What I like is the fact that it finishes with a great ball back to Odegaard.
21:02In a different moment, maybe Odegaard scores that.
21:04But here we see how he wins that penalty.
21:06He finds himself in a good position and immediately opens up his body for the goal.
21:10And the defender's in the wrong position.
21:12Jokeres, with the strength that he has and the positioning that he has, means that he has to be fouled.
21:16And then once he gets up, he's got a chance to go and take that penalty.
21:19I think Oblak, the goalkeeper, has probably created somewhat of a gap between his arms there.
21:23Yeah.
21:24But the strike from Jokeres certainly was there.
21:25And at half-time, Arsenal were winning 1-0.
21:27And I think, for the most part, it's down to Jokeres.
21:29And they are going to need him.
21:30Obviously, Havertz is out now.
21:32And they've got a very, very important few weeks ahead.
21:36So, a performance like that and the contribution that he made tonight is heartening, obviously, for Mikel Arteta, isn't it?
21:42Yeah, it is to a certain degree.
21:43I just think he's more suited to away games.
21:45I think he's better at being your focal point, holding the ball up, drawing fouls him, making life difficult.
21:50When you're going to be asked to dominate the ball at home in the next game,
21:54is he capable of doing that?
21:56Is he capable of scoring that important goal?
21:58He scores a lot of penalties, Jokeres, but he needs to make sure he's getting in better positions to score
22:04from open play.
22:04He's on 19 goals now.
22:06The only players ahead of him are Thiago and Haaland, who's way, way, way ahead.
22:10And that's what they brought him in to do, wasn't it?
22:12Score 20-plus goals this season.
22:13Yeah, it's funny.
22:14That's what we sort of thought they might need to get over the line of the title, was a $20,
22:18$25 season strikeout.
22:19It's only 12 in the Premier League.
22:20It depends where you want your $20 to be.
22:23It just feels as though he is a little bit short of that kind of absolute elite level from this
22:28first season.
22:29Maybe next season he's better when he's settled a little bit more.
22:31But at the moment, I'm not sure he's quite in that class that maybe Arsenal fans were expecting.
22:36Is that scoreline a scoreline that Mikel Arteta tonight will feel comfortable with taking back to the Emirates next week?
22:41I think so.

22:43I think we showed earlier how much they suffered in that second half.
22:45And the fact that they came away from the game with a 1-1 draw, knowing you're going to have

22:52I think overall they'll take it because he knows he wasn't perfect, but they can get better.

39:22But what is very evident is that you get two wide players.
39:26So this time you've got Alise and you've got Musiala.
39:30You've got Diaz through the middle, and you've got Harry Kane just sitting in that playmaker role, if you like.
39:35As he plays this ball into midfield now, you'll see there's a flat-back four from Paris Saint-Germain.
39:39And Marquinhos has got a problem, but he's got two runners now, Paco.
39:43And that spaces him behind him, it causes him so many problems.
39:46Little one-two, and that's what draws the penalty for Bayern Munich.

40:36And Alise just creating that magic.

40:44You see Harry Kane, we talked about him being in that number ten position, that playmaker position.

41:19But the thing is, is that it's this trio who get all the credit.
41:22But it's actually the four players.
41:25And you take into Musiala.
41:27And you've also got Serge Gnabry who play a part in that.
41:29It's a hundred goals in all competitions.
41:32And we've still got six more games to add to that.
41:35And they can add to that tally.

41:38Well, newspapers in France and Germany were understandably full of praise for last night's spectacle.
41:42No translation needed in L'Equipe, which calls the match football total or total football.
41:49Adding that the return leg should be another thriller.
41:52The headline in build is thanks for this football night.
41:55But the German tabloid also says that Bayern gave PSG too much space.
42:01So, Stephen's very brilliantly articulated how it's not actually a front three.

42:07Are you going to tell us the same thing for PSG about their attack?

42:48And the danger they can bring in what feels like a split second.
42:51And it always ends with a shot, with an assist, or, you know, with a goal.
42:55And it's so, so impressive.
42:56The energy that they have, the skill that they have, the timing, the combinations.

43:02But we blink.
43:03And before you know it, Desiree Dewey is going through on the Bayern Munich goal.
43:06And he's unlucky to just drag this shot wide.
43:08But I'll be honest, I would have hated to play against players like this.
43:12They're so sharp, so clever, so composed.
43:15And the organisation and the timing, understanding when to go, when not to go.
43:19And an appreciation for the pass here.

43:26And the quality that they have, as I say, it's breathtaking at times.

43:38And even though Bayern have players back, he's biding his time.

43:49You know, I know Stephen's front three was really good.
43:51But to be honest, I think my front three got five goals yesterday.

43:57We don't know quite how long he's going to be out for.
44:00Undoubtedly, he will be a miss.
44:02They do have other players to come in, of course.
44:03But let's have a word on Luis Enrique and what he has built here.
44:08And he's now the fastest manager to get to 50 Champions League wins.
44:12And that is an illustrious list he sits in there of those behind him.
44:17Can he do this with any other group of players?
44:19Could they play that way?
44:19This is just such a special combination of players.
44:22Not just their talent, their speed, their fitness, everything about them,
44:25the fluidity, you know, because his name is going to be banded around,
44:28isn't it, with all the big jobs over the next few years?
44:31I think he needs players of an incredibly high level, obviously.
44:35I don't think he could do it in, like, League Two, necessarily.
44:38The Premier League, obviously.
44:39Yeah, I think he could.
44:40If you think about his Barcelona team, which is always a bit overlooked,
44:43as we think of Barca as Guardiola's construction.
44:46But the team that won the Champions League in 2015 was Luis Enrique's masterpiece,
44:49the Messi-Nemar Suarez $131 season trio.
44:54It was the same.
44:55It was that sort of interchanging of positions.
44:57It was the fluidity.
44:57It was the speed.
44:58They did everything at.
44:59And what he won't have if he came to the Premier League is quite that help that he gets sometimes
45:03with the fixtures and how they're able to move games to create a bit more space
45:07between Champions League's fixtures, which they get in League A.
45:11And also to be able to rest players in the way he does.
45:14And you look at how many minutes his top players have played.
45:18And it's quite significant, isn't it, in terms of their rest time?
45:22Yeah, and this is the XI who started last night.
45:24Zaire Emery is a slightly strange one, because he's been playing as Fabian Ruiz has been injured.
45:28But everybody else, you know, you're looking at kind of 16, 17 full games they've played in League A this
45:33season.
45:34Compared to the Premier League teams, particularly Arsenal, obviously, being left in the Champions League,
45:38that is a relatively easy workload.
45:40Offset a bit by the Club World Cup last summer, because obviously they made the final.
45:43So they didn't have a break.
45:45But then they had a very slow start to the league phase, didn't they?
45:46But they can kind of afford to take it easier a little bit in the league as well,
45:50because they are so much stronger, so much richer than all their rivals.
45:53And, you know, the most league minutes played outfield this season of the teams left in the semi-finals,
45:58the top four players are all Arsenal players.
46:00However, for as much as that is a good point, I think you look at, say, those Arsenal players have
46:04played all those minutes.
46:04They could have been rotated better throughout the season.
46:07So for as much as, yes, they, you know, have played a few games.
46:11So why weren't they, do you think?
46:12I think there are some managers that like to maintain a consistent, not necessarily start in XI, but five or
46:17six players.
46:17And that's what we've seen with Arteta.
46:19But then come the end of the season, maybe that's why sometimes they'll fall away.
46:22I don't know if it'll be this season, but maybe that'll happen.
46:23OK, I feel like we've gone too far away from what a brilliant game that was.

46:48I just thought it was brilliant.
46:49I mean, the quality on show and the way that they think so quickly on the pitch, they react to
46:56things, whether it's defensively, offensively.
46:58I thought the game was absolutely brilliant.
47:00I mean, the standout game for me on Rory's list is obviously Istanbul, AC Milan versus Liverpool.
47:05I think it's arguably the greatest final that we've ever seen.
47:08Such a story around it.
47:10But in terms of quality of what we actually saw on the pitch, I think last night's game was just
47:15phenomenal.
47:16Any contenders for you that could nudge it off top spot?
47:20Oh, there's some really good ones there and some real memorable moments.
47:22Like, for example, the Barcelona game against PSG where this is Sergio Beto scores with like one of the last
47:28kicks of the game.
47:29You can feel the raw emotion around that.
47:30But that's also a team losing 6-1.
47:32But I think that game yesterday when it was 5-2 to PSG, that should have been game, set and
47:37match.
47:38But with the quality that Bayern have, instead, we've got two more goals from them.
47:41And now the tie is in the balance.

47:44Yeah, I mean, I'm similar to Nadum, to be honest.
47:47I think PSG-Barca was the most kind of breathtaking game that I've ever seen that 6-1, the Ramon

47:53It was two teams just going at each other constantly.
47:56Yeah, a game for the ages, a game from the gods.
47:58I think that was my favourite headline.
