00:30Look at that in there, I mean that just oozes quality and comfort, doesn't it?
00:35Six and three quarter litres of twin-turbo V8 in something that looks like the Royal Barge.
00:42Ah, 802 is a little Viva. We have got £500 for the very usable little Viva.
00:48I painted this Meteor Blue with Dulux coat for me.
00:53You're meant to use them on walls I think, aren't you?
00:55Yeah.
00:56You open the door and you shove your head in.
01:00I get a great big whiff of Vauxhall, that really does turbocharge you down that memory lane.
01:10The Matthewsons, a dynasty of classic car auctioneers.
01:1555.
01:17The joys of an auction.
01:18Most people will go to a sale with something in mind but come away with something different.
01:22The fun is the chase.
01:23We'll have a look and we'll advise you from there.
01:25You just don't know what's on the end of the phone, what you're going to find when you open them
01:29doors.
01:30This is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life.
01:34Testing, testing.
01:35Most people will buy a car because they can relate to it, maybe a car that Dad had.
01:40You're selling dreams.
01:41Right, here we go.
01:53You're like a wrap up a drain pipe, Jackie.
01:58Pickering HQ, as well as petrol fumes and polish, there's a whiff of romance in the air.
02:04Who's the owner of a sneaky new car?
02:05Me?
02:08Well, well.
02:10I feel like there's a story behind this.
02:13Well, it's Valentine's Day.
02:14We've been coming up here for a few months now looking at the cars.
02:17I thought 12 Roses was maybe a little bit 19th century, 20th century.
02:22How lucky am I?
02:24The car and the man.
02:28And the heady atmosphere has spread out of the garage up to the office.
02:33Thank you.
02:34Bye.
02:36Well, you're newly engaged, aren't you?
02:38So your father must have pulled out all the stops.
02:40Well, we had a conversation a couple of weeks ago and I went,
02:43oh, as soon as you've proposed, does that mean you're going to ask me to be your Valentine?
02:47He's like, no, he said, we're not doing that.
02:50Anyway, and he's got me a fake red rose bouquet,
02:53but in it, it's got Lindor chocolates in it as well.
02:57Organised for tonight. My wife's organised me.
02:59She's taking me away for tonight.
03:01No, she's not.
03:02She is.
03:04Where are you going?
03:05I have no idea.
03:07There's a tart and some sponge cakes by the looks of it.
03:11One rhubarb, one lemon and one with sprinkles on.
03:15I do like a good tart now and again.
03:26Scotland bound, mate, Scotland.
03:28Be pouring of rain down there later on, aren't they?
03:30Without a doubt.
03:32There's nothing Derek likes more than a trip beyond Hadrian's Wall.
03:36So I'm going up there today to pick up.
03:39They tell me an Austin 7,
03:40and they tell me it's parked in a bit of an unusual place,
03:44so we're going to have a bit of a chew getting it out.
03:46Well, that's nothing new, so I don't really bother me a great deal about that.
03:50But it's going to be interesting.
03:52You know, as long as it's not in his bedroom, it'll be all right.
04:12Andrew Johnston likes his cars, but today it's time to let one go.
04:17So then, Andrew, tell me what we've got here.
04:19This is the DB9 Volante, which I've had for 15 or 16 years.
04:28It's not his Aston, though. It's his Austin.
04:30And it's not in Andrew's garage.
04:34The car that's for sale is in the dining room.
04:37Oh?
04:38It's in the dining room.
04:39The car's in your dining room?
04:41It's cars in the dining room.
04:42And it has been for the past 18 years.
04:48The Austin hasn't moved since it was driven in almost two decades ago.
04:53This is a 1938 Austin 7.
04:56And why have you got it in your dining room?
04:59Er...
05:00Well, my grandchildren persuaded my partner
05:04that it would be fun to have it in the dining room,
05:07and she was not very enamoured with that.
05:10It's been where they sat and ate their breakfast cereals,
05:15and they've climbed in and out of the windows and through the roof
05:18and done all sorts of things.
05:20It's been well used.
05:22But not in the traditional...
05:24No, not in the driving sense, no.
05:32It's in very good nick, innit?
05:33No, it's fully functional.
05:35Although it hasn't run for 18 years, but it is fully functional.
05:39My parents never owned a car, other than for a brief period.
05:44When I was very young, they bought an Austin 7,
05:46and they couldn't afford to keep it going,
05:49so that's in their honour.
05:51I've had it for about 38 years,
05:54and it's been in the dining room for 18.
05:58Andrew's partner, Vi, is less enamoured than he is.
06:02When I first saw it, it was unkept.
06:05So my job has been to keep it clean,
06:10especially after all the frolics that goes on in it.
06:16Drinking, eating, legs hanging out the roof.
06:20Andrew was once in that car with nearly 12 women
06:24who were 20 years onwards,
06:26and all there was with legs all over the place.
06:30Loved every minute of it.
06:31I can't remember that at all.
06:34We're moving house,
06:35and if I moved it into the garage in my new house,
06:39I think it would sit there with a blanket over it,
06:42with a sheet over it,
06:43and it would be a great shame.
06:44Somebody will want to get a lot of pleasure
06:47and enjoyment from it.
06:48So it's time for it to go.
06:50It's served its purpose in our family.
06:53Time for Mr Austin to go somewhere else.
06:57You'll be glad to see its tiny little tailpipe
06:59going down that drive.
07:02I will.
07:03I will.
07:15A familiar face has returned to HQ.
07:18A 1968 Aston Martin DBS,
07:21which failed to sell in an auction back in March 2021.
07:2695,000.
07:27Are you all done 95?
07:29Unfortunately, I've got to pass on that one.
07:30We need more.
07:34I remember the car well, and it's a lovely, lovely example.
07:39And it went out more or less exactly as it's come back in.
07:42I think it's probably fair to say they haven't really caught on with desirability as yet.
07:49It's the poor man's classic Aston.
07:52Let's be fair.
07:53They're not a DB5.
07:54They're not a DB6, are they?
07:55They're not in that league.
07:57But I think interest is growing.
07:59I know not everyone likes green, but it does suit it.
08:03It really does.
08:05The interior's superb.
08:06Steering wheel's lovely.
08:07Dashboard's lovely.
08:09There's keeping cars and selling cars.
08:11And in my opinion, that's a keeping car.
08:14And in Mathewson Stalwart's Andy, Paul has a DBS mastermind on hand.
08:20This car is a foot wider than it's supposed to be.
08:23Is that right?
08:24It is wider.
08:25You know, it seems how wide is it?
08:26Yeah, yeah, they've got some stance, haven't they?
08:28I'm glad we found an expert.
08:30So am I.
08:31By chance.
08:33May I cut an old honeymoon in one of these?
08:36Ooh.
08:37I've still got the photographs on me phone, I can show you them.
08:39No, no, no, no.
08:40It's a family show.
08:41No, we don't.
08:43Well, I'll have a bet with you, Paul, anyway.
08:46You say, what have you got to say?
08:48I think it'll do between 90 and 100.
08:51Right.
08:51I think it'll be 85 and 90.
08:54Ah, there you go, you see.
08:55I'll have a fire on it.
08:56How's that?
09:15Are you head of signs then?
09:17Yes, I'm just going to think of some more signs to put up in a minute.
09:22Yeah, I know, bloody signs.
09:24Yeah.
09:25There are all sorts of reasons why people flock to Pickering to pick up a classic car.
09:30I've always wanted a VW, a vintage VW, and this is my new car, hopefully.
09:36It's all a chrome works great.
09:38And you love the colour, don't you?
09:39Colour.
09:40Colour spot on.
09:40Nice colour, really nice colour.
09:42I've already got a name for it.
09:43Bugsy.
09:48I'm looking to buy a first classic, so going all out big.
09:51You can't beat that smell.
09:52The vintage oil and leather smell together.
09:55I thought that was you.
09:57It will be what I've said.
09:58Yeah.
10:01One very British patrician motor has attracted a couple of serious pre-auction admirers.
10:07Steve Jagger and Mark Oyston plan on using it on an intrepid adventure.
10:13A 3,000 mile rally from South Africa to Tanzania.
10:18The whole rally takes just over three weeks, you know, from start to finish.
10:22I think there's about 50 competitors in all.
10:25Mm-hm.
10:26In all different vehicles, more walks of life.
10:29Different countries.
10:29Different countries, yeah.
10:31Their mark of choice is inspired by a classic American rally film.
10:36The cannonball run back in the early eighties, which obviously Mark can remember, but I'm
10:41too young.
10:42There was the shake in there who did it in a Rolls-Royce silver shadow, but the two fragile.
10:50And so we felt that the spiritual successor to that car would be the Bentley, because it's
10:56still got the big 6.75 litre engine, but with a couple of turbos whacked on it.
11:02So that's the thinking and our team name will be the Great Shakes.
11:09Hopefully we'll get from here to be in one piece.
11:12So you seem pretty dead set on doing this.
11:14Oh, definitely.
11:14Yeah.
11:15Yeah, yeah.
11:16It's booked.
11:17It's booked.
11:18And you've not even got the bloody car.
11:19We haven't got a car yet.
11:21And it's in July.
11:22We need to crack on with it.
11:23Yeah.
11:34The Matthewsons have a very particular expertise in extracting vehicles from unusual and tricky
11:39situations.
11:41Oh, blimey.
11:42There.
11:43Yeah.
11:44All right.
11:46Today, Derek is faced with one of the oddest to remove a 1938 Austin 7 from a Scottish dining
11:53room.
11:55Hey.
11:55We're here.
11:57Look at that.
11:59Lovely area.
12:00Beautiful views.
12:01Look at that.
12:02You can see all the way to Dundee.
12:05Beautiful.
12:06Really lovely.
12:09Well then.
12:10Well, Derek.
12:11It's exactly what you want round here, isn't it?
12:13Oh, definitely.
12:14Yeah.
12:15I've watched you on the TV for years.
12:16On the TV, haven't you?
12:17You don't look a bloody bit different.
12:20I'm looking forward to seeing this car.
12:22I'm told it's in an unusual place.
12:24It's in an unusual place.
12:26Well, I don't know.
12:31That's amazing, isn't it?
12:32Yes.
12:32What do you think?
12:34It's incredible.
12:35It's a big seven, isn't it?
12:36It's an Austin big seven.
12:37It's a big seven.
12:38It's a big seven.
12:38Yeah.
12:39And this is sat in here for years.
12:42It's been here for 18 years.
12:43The dining table and chairs went and more toys came in.
12:48They used to get in behind the wheel and they were pretending to be driving.
12:52On holidays and things like that.
12:53Yeah.
12:53I can imagine it.
12:54Yeah.
12:55Well, it's amazing.
12:57Next up, extricating the Austin from its resting spot of 18 years.
13:02Derek's going to need a novice's help.
13:04Andrew's partner, Vi.
13:06Vi, would you be happy sitting in it while we pushed it out or would you be concerned?
13:10Are you?
13:10That's the way then, yeah.
13:11So the foot break is that one on this, is it?
13:13It's the middle one.
13:14Yeah, yeah.
13:14The middle one.
13:15It's the middle one.
13:16Are you sure you'll be all right?
13:19I'm losing confidence now.
13:22Yeah, that one makes the noise and that one makes it stop.
13:25Okay.
13:25So you're all right on that one there, yeah?
13:27Okay.
13:27You all right?
13:28Yeah.
13:28Stay confident.
13:29We're going on a bare hand.
13:32That's it, you've got it, yeah.
13:34A little bit of right hand down, I think.
13:36Are we all right there, Andrew?
13:37Yep.
13:37Just straighten up a bit, Vi.
13:38A little bit of left hand down.
13:41See, give it some right hand down if you can.
13:43Some right hand down.
13:44Now a little bit of shunting.
13:47That's it.
13:47Back again.
13:49There you go.
13:49She'll do it that, I think, Derek.
13:50Lovely.
13:51Will we do it now?
13:53Yeah, we'll do it now.
13:54Okay, we're there.
13:55Now we'll do it now.
13:56Now.
14:02Righto, we're away.
14:09Smooth as silt and quiet as a lamb.
14:18Never find a better runner.
14:23Yeah, sad to see it go.
14:25How ya?
14:25A wee bit.
14:26A wee bit.
14:27But not really.
14:29It's time.
14:30It's the right time.
14:33And hopefully somebody else will get a lot of fun out of it.
14:37Yeah, bang on.
14:39Yeah, lovely.
14:40A little bit that way, Andrew.
14:41There you go.
14:44You can hold it about there.
14:45Yep.
14:46I've got it.
14:46Let it all off.
14:47Okay.
14:51That's it.
14:51If you can lock her up there.
14:53Okay.
14:54Oh, man, I tell you what.
14:55If we all went as easy as this, we'd be laughing, wouldn't we?
15:01Thanks for your hospitality.
15:02Lovely meeting you.
15:03And you.
15:04It's been a pleasure.
15:04Thank you.
15:05And thank you ever so much.
15:06No problem.
15:07Good luck with things.
15:08And most importantly...
15:10Your cakes.
15:11The food on the way home.
15:13Yes.
15:13It means I haven't got to stop.
15:14Keep going.
15:15Enjoy.
15:16Thanks for coming.
15:16See you again soon.
15:17Thank you very much.
15:18Bye.
15:19Bye-bye.
15:33The 2002 Bentley Arnage has attracted another admirer.
15:38They're just lovely, aren't they?
15:40Terrific value.
15:41There you go.
15:42£10,000 to £13,000.
15:44I mean, come on.
15:48We're talking like Fiesta or golf money, aren't we?
15:51Look at it.
15:52Because what were these new?
15:54Oh, I dread to think.
15:55They'd be £120,000 or something, weren't they?
15:57They're an awful lot of money.
15:58Someone's lost a lot of money out of that motor car, haven't they?
16:01People have just got this thing that they cost a lot of money to run.
16:04Service.
16:05Repairs.
16:06They think that they have to go to Bentley.
16:08You don't.
16:09Go to a reputable independent and get the same sort of service that you would get out of
16:14anyone with a VW, Audi, whatever it might be.
16:21Look at that in there.
16:23I mean, that just oozes quality and comfort, doesn't it?
16:26Hardly any wear is there on the seat and things, you know.
16:29Carpets are good.
16:31Headlining's lovely.
16:34There we go, look, a sea of plastic.
16:37Oh, 675, look.
16:40Twin turbo, of course.
16:42I know, look at that.
16:43Hand-built, in-crew, engine number, blah-de-blah-de-blah, by Colin Mayflower, does that say?
16:51Fallon.
16:52Mayflower.
16:53So there you go.
16:54So that's the guy who built the engine and that's the number of the engine.
16:57Beautiful, isn't it?
17:09How about that, don't they?
17:11Actually gorgeous.
17:13The Austin 7 Derek removed from a Scottish dining room is back at HQ.
17:20We're pleased to get it.
17:22Not that it's ultra-valuable, but it's a nice straight car and it'll sell well.
17:28Yeah, a bit of right.
17:29That's it, yeah.
17:32Yeah?
17:32Yeah, perfect.
17:33Yeah, let her go.
17:34I am.
17:37Yeah?
17:37Yeah, a little bit of a tiny weaning bit, not a lot.
17:39That's it, yeah, go on.
17:41Roll the right.
17:46Hang on.
17:47She's sweet.
17:55I'm trying to guess what people could do if they...
17:57Yeah, it doesn't matter.
18:0016, thank you.
18:03There you go.
18:06Well, number 116, 96, D, A, Aston Martin, D, B, S. Everyone that comes on site looks
18:14at it.
18:14Everyone that comes on site talks about it.
18:17Everyone that comes on site would like to own it.
18:19But the fact of the matter is there are 100,000 quid.
18:23Some bids with me.
18:2480, 80 pound, 80,000, 82 and a half, 85, 85, 750.
18:2987, 50, 87, 90, 90,000, 90,000 pound.
18:3490,000 pound, only 90,000 pound.
18:36I'll take one.
18:37Looks really nice even on the photograph.
18:44All done then.
18:45Very provisional, 90,000 pound.
18:48Provisional, 90,000.
18:54You're hoping, aren't you, that somebody somewhere is really keen on the car and he's trying
18:58to get their finances in place.
18:59You don't necessarily have that sort of money sat in a bank account, do you?
19:03So, it's right to give it a few opportunities to sell.
19:06Sadly, it would appear it hasn't sold, but we'll see.
19:09Grind him down.
19:10You never know.
19:12In the end, a deal couldn't be reached and the Aston Martin went back to its owner.
19:17Again.
19:23Every month, dozens of motorbikes arrive for sale.
19:27Some look like they've just come off the race track.
19:29Others are relics from the bygone age.
19:36Well, unusual entry.
19:38Quite a rare bit of kit, really.
19:40Said to be an original genuine police bike and apparently the owner of it rode it for about
19:45ten years when he was in the force.
19:47So, it's got some pretty serious provenance with it.
19:51Basically, it's a Speed Twin, a 5TA Speed Twin from about 1960, 61.
19:58Bathtub's all standard, of course.
20:00Quite a sought-after bike.
20:03A repro radio, they tell me.
20:04You know, it looks original and genuine, doesn't it?
20:06But they tell me it's actually some sort of repro.
20:08So, don't hold me to that.
20:10Absolutely, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:12Old-fashioned MOBO.
20:14Brilliant.
20:14So, I think it's great.
20:16Someone's going to have an immense amount of fun with this.
20:19And we did try, earlier on, to maybe just see if she'd kick over.
20:24She might go.
20:27How about that?
20:29Not a lot wrong with that, is there?
20:31What a nice little machine.
20:35On a bonny little bike.
20:59Yeah.
21:00Brakes are stiff.
21:01And we can't push you.
21:03Jack?
21:04Yeah?
21:04¿Qué te doy? ¿Qué te doy? ¿Qué te doy? ¿Qué te doy?
21:07A surprisingly hefty Triumph Vitesse
21:10needs shifting. The young Matthewsons
21:12have press-ganged their pal Neil
21:14into service.
21:15¿Por qué te doy? ¿Qué te doy?
21:17¿Qué te doy? ¿Qué te doy? ¿Qué te doy?
21:19Don't mess our system up, Chris.
21:21They've got forced labour involved in it.
21:24¿Cómo did you get roped into that, lad?
21:25I wanted to borrow the forklift on Friday.
21:29So,
21:30they'll do me a favour, I'll do them a favour.
21:32Right,
21:33let's move on.
21:43What have we got here, then?
21:44We've got an Austin Big 7,
21:47which, believe it or not,
21:48is a bigger version than the Austin 7.
21:51So, the Austin 7
21:53is probably the only,
21:55one of the only cars out there
21:57that is sort of bucking the trend
21:59with regard to
22:00this period of production being
22:03saleable or not.
22:04There are signs
22:06that a new generation
22:08is starting to show interest,
22:11but
22:12they have got to be
22:14absolutely lovely and out-of-the-box.
22:16I mean, that little car there
22:17will probably witness
22:19£4,000 or £5,000,
22:21which is crazy, isn't it, really?
22:23Sort of the price of a bathroom suite,
22:25isn't it, almost?
22:27It wants to go to a lovely little village
22:29somewhere, doesn't it?
22:29And it wants to
22:31take the kids to school
22:32on the morning,
22:33in the summer,
22:34and pick them up of an afternoon,
22:36and it wants the Labrador
22:37sat on the back seat,
22:38and it just wants,
22:39basically,
22:40you just want to go back
22:41to
22:43James Herriot,
22:43don't you?
22:44And just pretend for a while
22:46that we are back
22:47in a place
22:48that was so much easier
22:49and simpler
22:50and just generally nicer,
22:51I think.
22:53Nostalgia, eh?
22:54It's a powerful thing, isn't it?
23:004, 5, 7
23:01is the Austin 7.
23:02Ah, these are little cuties,
23:03aren't they?
23:04There they are.
23:05Everyone should have
23:05an Austin 7 at some point.
23:0719.38, this one.
23:08We've got 4, 5.
23:09We've got 4, 6.
23:10We've got 4, 7.
23:124, 8.
23:124, 9.
23:13£5,000 bid.
23:145,000.
23:155, 1.
23:165,001.
23:175, 2.
23:185, 3.
23:195, 4.
23:205,004.
23:215, 5.
23:22At 5,500 pounds.
23:24Great little cut.
23:255,006.
23:265, 7 we've got.
23:285,007.
23:29At 5,700 pounds,
23:31it's on.
23:325,700 is absolutely banging.
23:345,700 pounds.
23:35They'll be over the moon,
23:36with that.
23:36Over the moon.
23:37Sold.
23:42Up next is the 1961
23:44Triumph Police motorcycle
23:46and it's raised the suspicions
23:48of former Bobby Dave.
23:50I've never seen
23:51one like that before.
23:53It just made me think.
23:55Ask somebody
23:56trying to put something together
23:58and it's not quite
23:59worked out right.
24:015, 6, 9.
24:03The Triumph.
24:04This is an ex-Bristol
24:05police bike.
24:06Start me at 15.
24:08Dave, police bike there.
24:09I've never seen them
24:10like that
24:11and it can't be an
24:11undercover bike
24:12because it's got
24:13brakes on it.
24:14Could be double bluffing
24:18though, Dave.
24:18Double bluffing.
24:201,500 pounds
24:21and a 1,500 there.
24:221,500 pounds there
24:24for the underclover.
24:25Police bikers,
24:25Dave calls it.
24:261,500 pounds.
24:28He needs a bit more.
24:28Have a word with the team
24:29upstairs.
24:301,600 pounds.
24:311,600 for the first.
24:33Second, third,
24:34last time.
24:35Very provisional
24:36at 16.
24:381,600 pounds
24:39was a steal
24:40for the buyer
24:41who locked in the sale
24:42and took away the key.
24:45And bikes all round
24:47have been doing okay.
24:48Lot number 22,
24:49the 900 Kawasaki.
24:50What a stunning machine
24:51and it's on sale
24:52at 12,600 pounds.
24:57580.
24:591988 Yamaha.
25:00There we are.
25:01Look, iconic machine.
25:02That at 1,200
25:03for the third
25:05and last time.
25:07Lot number 622,
25:09the lovely
25:09on the CBR 900RR.
25:11Third and last time
25:13at 53.
25:14Be warned.
25:25Got a few bits
25:26and bolts in this garage,
25:27haven't we?
25:28Well, there's 30 years,
25:3033 years living here.
25:32Mucking around
25:33with motors
25:34all the time.
25:36In leafy Cheshire,
25:38Ray Clay,
25:39who's a retired
25:39motoring engineer,
25:40is preparing
25:41for the collection
25:41of a car
25:42that he's owned
25:42for more than
25:43five decades.
25:44His 1965
25:46Vauxhall Viva HA.
25:49There are a number
25:50of people who see that
25:51and they say,
25:52God, that was my first,
25:53my dad's first car.
25:55But, you know,
25:56see, we used to sell
25:57240,000 Vivas
25:59a year.
26:07The Viva HA
26:08was Vauxhall's
26:09belated new entry
26:10to the world
26:10of post-war
26:11small car family
26:12motoring
26:13and the first
26:14to be built
26:14at the company's
26:15Ellesmere port plant.
26:19There were two
26:20decidedly boxy
26:21launch models.
26:22Ray's version,
26:23the deluxe,
26:24would have set you
26:24back 566 pounds
26:26and one shilling.
26:27Oh, and don't forget
26:29the Threeperns.
26:31The Viva went
26:32through three versions,
26:33the HA,
26:34HB and HC,
26:36before its ultimate
26:37demise in 1979,
26:39replaced by the Astra,
26:41although the name
26:42was revived briefly
26:42in 2015
26:43for the UK version
26:45of the Opel car.
26:51I mean,
26:52I used to get a loop
26:53in it 30 miles
26:54and I used to drive
26:56it down the motorway
26:5780, you know.
26:5970?
27:0070, 70, yeah, yeah.
27:02This was before
27:03the 70 limit.
27:06Ray's garage-cum-workshop
27:08is a semi-chaotic memorial
27:10to a lifetime
27:11of tinkering.
27:12I painted this
27:15and they took
27:16the mick out of me
27:17when I retired.
27:18I painted it
27:19meteor blue
27:20with Dulux
27:22coat finish
27:24and put it on
27:25with a roller.
27:28You've only used
27:28them on walls,
27:29I think, aren't you?
27:30Yeah.
27:33My son,
27:34he's worried
27:35that I might snuff it
27:37and he'll have to
27:38come up from
27:39Tunbridge Wells
27:39and clear out
27:40all this rubbish,
27:41you see.
27:42They'll all be
27:43ringing up tonight.
27:44Has he gone?
27:44No, he's gone,
27:45you know.
27:46They think I might
27:47have pegged out
27:48right at the last minute.
27:49So you've got to
27:50miss it?
27:51I might do,
27:52a little bit.
28:00The sales are
28:01back underway.
28:0261, yeah.
28:04Oh, 51.
28:05There's more than
28:06600 lots.
28:08No wonder you don't
28:09win many bids.
28:1061 it is.
28:12Of every size
28:13and shape.
28:1451.
28:15It is must.
28:1651.
28:17You're all right,
28:18I'll let you
28:18off with it.
28:20I'm going to get
28:20him to spec service.
28:25Lot 136,
28:26Bentley Arnage,
28:28lovely,
28:28lovely thing.
28:29We have got
28:307,000,
28:317,500,
28:328,000,
28:338,500,
28:34there you go,
28:368,500,
28:389,000,
28:399,400 pounds.
28:41Looks for nothing,
28:42doesn't it?
28:43Let's be fair.
28:44What a lot of car.
28:459,800.
28:469,800,
28:47says Dave,
28:47on the telephone.
28:4810,000 online.
28:5010,000,
28:51do you want 10,200?
28:5110,200,
28:53he says.
28:54Dave's telephone,
28:5510,200 pounds,
28:57on sale,
28:58ladies and gentlemen.
28:59Are you sure
29:00you're all done?
29:0010,400,
29:01they're not all done.
29:0210,400.
29:03Do you want 10,600,
29:05Dave?
29:05Yes.
29:0610,600,
29:07he says.
29:0710,600.
29:0910,700,
29:10Dave.
29:10Right,
29:1110,800.
29:1110,800.
29:12He does,
29:1210,800.
29:15Dave's telephone,
29:16for the first,
29:17V sharp,
29:1810,800 for the second,
29:20Dave's phone,
29:2110,800,
29:21third and last time
29:22looking round.
29:25Looks like the Bentley
29:26is off to Africa.
29:28Rally enthusiast
29:29Steve and Mark
29:30have secured
29:30the winning bid.
29:38Here are the workers.
29:42Congleton,
29:42in Cheshire.
29:44Charlie and Ash
29:44have arrived
29:45to pick up Ray's vever.
29:48Is it Ray?
29:49Ray, it is.
29:49Nice to meet you.
29:50I'm Charlie.
29:51Charlie.
29:51Nice to meet you.
29:52Ashley.
29:52Ashley.
29:53OK, boy.
29:54Oh, wow.
29:55How long's it been in there,
29:57like?
29:58I'm just admiring
29:59how clean it is in here.
30:00Yes.
30:02Vauxhall's used to rust away.
30:03Yeah,
30:04they started rusting
30:05when they left the factory,
30:06didn't they?
30:06Before.
30:07Yeah.
30:09The preservation work
30:10on the engine
30:10isn't the only surprising
30:12aspect of this vever.
30:14What about that?
30:16You see that?
30:17Yeah.
30:18That rusts away.
30:20There's a coat hanger
30:21in there.
30:22Is that?
30:23Yeah.
30:23And then fiberglass
30:25from about there.
30:26Ray, I'll believe it.
30:27They didn't tell me
30:28that earlier.
30:29It kept that bit quiet.
30:30There's a coat hanger
30:30where?
30:31In the wheel arch.
30:33And it's been there
30:3440 years.
30:35It's worked,
30:35if it works,
30:37isn't it?
30:37So you can't really
30:38grumble too much at that.
30:39Ray, you can teach
30:40these young lads
30:41a thing or two today,
30:41I think.
30:42No, no, no.
30:43He knows a lot
30:44more than us.
30:47Let's see if she'll
30:48move then.
30:51It'll either move
30:51straight away
30:52or it won't move at all,
30:54or it won't move at all,
30:54I think.
30:57What's no problem?
30:58Look at that.
31:00There you go.
31:01Look at that.
31:01There they are.
31:02Oh, well, I never
31:02like to get caught short.
31:05You've been looking for them,
31:06haven't you?
31:07They've been there
31:0730 years.
31:08Yeah, they have.
31:09Better not sit on that.
31:12All right, Ash?
31:14Yeah, keep her at that.
31:17Yeah, you've passed
31:17Gary's door now.
31:18We're out.
31:19Lovely.
31:20There you go.
31:20First time it's seen
31:21daylight in a while.
31:23Free as a bird,
31:23isn't it?
31:24Oh, look at that.
31:28All right, you all side, Ash?
31:29Yeah, you're all right.
31:33Straighten up.
31:35That's it.
31:48Oh, join the professionals.
31:52That'll do us.
31:54Right, I'll get a strap
31:55on it quick.
31:59That's it.
32:00I'm just wondering
32:01whether to take it back
32:03and renovate it.
32:06Well, I'm impressed
32:07with you lads.
32:09Really?
32:10I am, yeah.
32:11You joined the professionals.
32:13I don't know about that.
32:14If I was still working,
32:15I'd give you a job.
32:17Ah, brilliant.
32:19Right then, well,
32:20I think we're on our way.
32:21On your way, eh?
32:22Yeah.
32:23All right, thank you.
32:23Good to meet you.
32:24All the best.
32:25All right, mate.
32:30I don't feel
32:31nostalgic at all,
32:33which I thought I wouldn't do.
32:35It's a good project,
32:36doing a car, you know.
32:38I hope so, you know,
32:39a young lad gets it.
32:41And if he wants
32:42any bits,
32:44I'll have him.
33:07Steve and Mark,
33:09the new owners
33:09of the Bentley Arnage,
33:11have turned up
33:11to claim their vehicle.
33:12and they're more convinced
33:14than ever
33:15that it's the right car
33:16to take them
33:17on their rally expedition
33:18to Africa.
33:22Ta-da!
33:25Six and three-quarter litres
33:27of twin-turbo V8.
33:30450 brake horsepower.
33:32Absolutely nuts
33:33in something
33:34that looks like
33:35the Royal Barge.
33:36It's too heavy, really,
33:37for what we're doing.
33:38Silly amounts of power,
33:39but nearly a three-ton car
33:42by the time
33:42we've got all
33:43of the kit on it.
33:44But look at that.
33:46That's why.
33:48This journey
33:49is going to be
33:49one epic journey
33:50with Steve and I.
33:52This is just the offset.
33:53This is just the start.
33:54So, you know,
33:55watch this space.
34:11I am a bit of a sucker
34:12for Vauxhall's.
34:13I like Vauxhall.
34:15I was born in
34:16Luton and Dunstable Hospital,
34:17which is a hop, jump
34:18and a skip away
34:19from Vauxhall's plant.
34:21And here I am.
34:22Yeah.
34:23With a little
34:23cheapy, cheapy beaver.
34:25Aren't I?
34:29You open the door
34:30and you shove your head in.
34:33I get a great big
34:34whiff of Vauxhall
34:35and I'm taken back
34:37to my granddad
34:38straight away.
34:39That really does
34:42turbocharge you
34:42down that memory lane.
34:43It really does.
34:46There's no point
34:46whatsoever in spending
34:47a lot of money
34:48restoring the car,
34:49none whatsoever.
34:50It's just,
34:51there still are
34:52lots of us out there
34:52that just want
34:53just a summer user
34:55just to go to work in,
34:56you know,
34:57go to the shops in,
34:58you know,
34:58not necessarily go to shows
35:00and things in,
35:00but just want to
35:01spend a little bit
35:03of their week
35:05back in the 60s
35:06and 70s.
35:06What better way
35:07than to have
35:08a Vauxhall Viva, eh?
35:13Ah, so too is
35:15a little Viva.
35:16We have got £500
35:17for the very usable
35:18little Viva.
35:19Look, bless it.
35:20At £500, £600,
35:22at £600,
35:23then for the little Viva
35:24at £600.
35:25Not doing very well,
35:25is it?
35:26Should have bought it,
35:27Charlie.
35:28Eh?
35:29Should have bought that.
35:29£650, £700.
35:30Still buy it.
35:32Cheap.
35:32£700, £700.
35:33I don't want one of them.
35:35You've not seen my invoice
35:36for the sale, yeah.
35:39At £700,
35:40have we all done
35:41at £750?
35:43£750?
35:44£800?
35:45I'd be nice to try
35:46and get in four digits
35:46if we could.
35:47£800, though.
35:48We've got that £800.
35:50At £800,
35:50then have we all done
35:51£850?
35:52We're not quite yet.
35:53£850, £900?
35:54We're nearly there.
35:55We're nearly there
35:56at £900.
35:57£1,000?
35:58There we go.
35:59We made it to £1,000.
36:00There we are.
36:00£1,000?
36:01We've made it there.
36:02Now put it on sale
36:03at £1,000 then.
36:04At £1,000 then.
36:05We've all done
36:06for the first,
36:07second, third
36:07and last time.
36:09Sold at £1,000.
36:11Well done.
36:11Not the cheapest one
36:12in the world,
36:14but not the most dear.
36:15So to be fair,
36:17yeah,
36:17I would have thought
36:18it'd be about
36:18around its money.
36:26Steve rang me up
36:27one weekend
36:28and suggested
36:29he'd seen
36:30this Africa rally
36:32and then we decided
36:33there and then,
36:34yeah,
36:34we'll do it
36:34and it just
36:36progressed from there,
36:37really.
36:38Africa,
36:38it's just
36:39always appealed,
36:40the landscape,
36:42the animals,
36:43just the wildness,
36:45really.
36:47In East Yorkshire,
36:49Steve Jagger
36:50and Mark Oyston
36:51are reminiscing
36:51about their amazing
36:52trip to Africa
36:53with the Bentley R-Narch.
36:57That's the set-off
36:59of the journey
36:59there.
37:01Gosh.
37:02Yeah,
37:03I'm feeling quite
37:03emotional, actually.
37:05It was good.
37:06Bit of dodgy
37:07camera work there.
37:08Can I just point out
37:09it was my camera work?
37:12My camera work's
37:13pretty good.
37:15The trip,
37:16which Steve and Mark
37:17used to raise funds
37:18for Macmillan
37:18Cancer Support,
37:19didn't exactly
37:20work out as planned.
37:22When we shipped
37:22the car across,
37:24well,
37:25basically the shipping
37:25agent messed up
37:26and the car
37:27arrived late,
37:28so we decided
37:29to abort
37:30the actual rally,
37:31but we did
37:32a trip from
37:33Johannesburg
37:34up the Indian
37:35Ocean side,
37:36so we stopped
37:37quite a few places
37:38along that way
37:39up to Mozambique
37:40and then cut back
37:41into the interior
37:41of the country.
37:42Next year,
37:43we'll do the full
37:45route,
37:45but there were
37:46some very long
37:47driving days,
37:48which will be
37:49similar to what
37:49we'll be doing.
37:50There'll just be
37:51more of them.
37:52We had some
37:52real adventures.
37:53It was fantastic
37:54and the car
37:54performed really,
37:56really well.
37:57The raised suspension
37:58modified the exhaust
37:59slightly,
38:00so it just gives
38:00a little bit more
38:01raw,
38:01a bit more
38:01humph.
38:02Put the roof
38:03tent on the top,
38:04full-size spare
38:04wheel on the rear.
38:06It was like it was
38:07made for the
38:07off-road conditions.
38:09It just handled
38:09it really well.
38:10I mean,
38:11it doesn't rev
38:11particularly high,
38:13the engine,
38:13so the things
38:14we're doing,
38:14it would just
38:15change its level
38:16of purr.
38:17We met some
38:18amazing,
38:19awesome people
38:20on our trips
38:21and of course
38:22everywhere we went
38:23and everywhere we
38:23were parked,
38:24the people had
38:25the crowds around
38:25us because they'd
38:26never seen a car
38:27like that before.
38:34But the highlight
38:35of any trip to
38:36this part of the
38:36world is the
38:37wildlife.
38:42Oh yes,
38:43this was our
38:44elephant incident.
38:45It looked further
38:46away on the
38:47cam footage
38:48than it certainly
38:49felt at the time.
38:51There's road signs
38:52with elephants
38:54squashing cars
38:55and things.
38:55It's like,
38:56you don't get many
38:57of those in
38:57East Yorkshire.
39:03Yeah,
39:04you'll never forget
39:04those memories
39:05and its vistas
39:06in your mind.
39:07It's fantastic.
39:08That was beautiful.
39:10Yeah,
39:10it was.
39:11Absolutely.
39:11Indian Ocean
39:12and the beaches
39:13were beautiful.
39:15The Bentleys
39:16still in Africa
39:17in storage
39:18waiting for the
39:18next instalment
39:19of Steve and
39:20Mark's adventures.
39:21But this initial
39:23trip was a vital
39:24piece of preparation
39:25for the rally
39:26proper.
39:27Still nervous,
39:28still things to
39:29do.
39:29A lot of the
39:30planning that went
39:31into this year's
39:32has just moved
39:33forwards into
39:34next year's.
39:35Because what I
39:36have learned about
39:37Mark is he's
39:37snarls like a
39:38ping around
39:39me in porridge.
39:41And it's
39:42definitely a job
39:43for separate
39:44rooms.
39:45Mainly
39:45separate buildings.
39:47I think.
39:58I like oddball things.
40:00I like strange cars
40:02and cars that
40:03nobody wanted
40:04or that there was
40:05loads of,
40:06there's none now,
40:07you know.
40:07I like different
40:08things.
40:10In Carlisle,
40:11John Percival,
40:12the new owner of the
40:13now re-sprayed Viva,
40:14is introducing his
40:15son Austin to the
40:17joys of Vauxhall,
40:19confined to the
40:20driveway for now.
40:23He's seven months
40:24old.
40:24As you can see,
40:26he kind of likes it,
40:27I think.
40:29Don't you?
40:30Can you remember
40:31sitting on your
40:32parents' knee doing
40:33this?
40:33Definitely, yeah.
40:35I definitely can.
40:37Things like this,
40:38it sticks in your
40:39mind.
40:39You teach your
40:40kids things that
40:42you enjoy,
40:42so they enjoy
40:44them, you know.
40:45He was crying a
40:46minute ago, you
40:47know, and look at
40:47him now, he's more
40:48than happy just to be
40:49bouncing up and
40:50down in the car.
40:53Yeah.
40:54No, very impressed
40:55with it, aren't
40:56you, son?
41:00This Viva isn't
41:01John's first rodeo.
41:03Oh, no.
41:04I know this is a
41:05brave thing to say,
41:06but I'm going to say
41:07well over 600 or
41:08700 cars in my
41:09lifetime.
41:10Sorry, 600 or 700
41:12cars?
41:13Yeah.
41:14I used to go down
41:14the local auction at
41:16about 12-year-old or
41:1813-year-old, and if
41:20there was a car that
41:21didn't sell, I used
41:22to give 40, 50
41:23quid for it.
41:24If there's something
41:25I think that's cheap,
41:26I'll buy it, and that
41:28was 1,000 pound, that
41:29little car.
41:30It was a non-runner.
41:31I'd just take a
41:32gamble, you know.
41:36And it paid off.
41:42It drives lovely, to be
41:44honest.
41:44The suspension, the
41:45steering's so light, and
41:47yeah, it's lovely.
41:50It sounds very vain, but
41:52it's nice to have people
41:53turn around and look and
41:54smile.
41:55It just makes their day,
41:57really.
41:57And it makes my day.
41:59It's lovely.
42:05I'll be totally open and
42:07honest.
42:08I've suffered from
42:09depression, anxiety, and
42:12I still do.
42:13And I was diagnosed with
42:15fibromyalgia three years
42:16ago.
42:17It's an awful disease,
42:19condition, whatever you
42:20want to call it.
42:21I suppose before I knew I
42:23had it, I self-medicated
42:25with alcohol.
42:26Now I don't drink at all.
42:29As sad as this sounds, I
42:30get up in the morning, I
42:32see the car, and whatever
42:35I've done to it the day
42:36before, I'm proud of that.
42:39All you've got to do is
42:41focus on something, and
42:42life's good, basically.
42:44So the car has helped
42:47certainly you, a little bit
42:49of a difficult point in
42:50life, and it will bring a
42:51lot of joy to Austin as
42:53well, won't it, in future
42:54years?
42:55The car that saved his
42:56dad, yeah.
42:58You could say that.
43:02When he's five, six years
43:03old, old enough to
43:04appreciate and understand
43:06the car, I think he'll
43:07love it.
43:08And there'll be something
43:09we can do together on it
43:10as well.
43:11And that must mean the
43:12world.
43:13Oh, it does, yeah.
43:14I mean, Austin means the
43:15world, my partner means the
43:17world to me, but the car
43:18is a close second, yeah.
