00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt from Somerset.
00:04At antiques fairs like this, you'll often see fine examples of Georgian and Victorian furniture.
00:13These quality pieces of brown furniture used to command high prices in the auction room,
00:19but from around the 1990s, those prices began to plummet.
00:25Today, you can pick up a stunning piece just like this for under £10.
00:31Despite rumours that brown furniture is coming back into fashion,
00:35millions of pieces are thrown away each year.
00:39But later, I'll meet a designer who gives these unloved pieces a brand new lease of life,
00:45and he'll unveil his latest creation. First though...
00:50It's time to see if our teams have brushed up on their antiques knowledge. Let's go bargain hunting!
01:18Today's teams will be browsing the stalls here at the Bath & West Showground in Shepton Mallet.
01:25With £300 to spend on three items, they'll need to use their one hour wisely.
01:31One item must cost £75 or more, and they mustn't forget my challenge.
01:35The aim of the game is to sell them for a profit at auction.
01:39So let's meet today's teams.
01:42Hi, I'm Pat.
01:43I'm Linda.
01:44And we're here to have fun.
01:46We're here to win.
01:47And take home the golden gavel!
01:51Loving your energy.
01:52Are you good pals?
01:54We met when we were 17.
01:56We used to go to the nightclub on a Saturday night.
01:59That's round our handbags.
02:01What's on your shopping list?
02:03Well, something sparkly.
02:05I'll do like a bit of sparkle, a bit of bling.
02:08Who's going to take the lead?
02:10Well, we might compromise.
02:13Yes.
02:14Yeah, we'll see.
02:16They're the Reds.
02:18Let's meet the Blues.
02:20Hi, I'm Jo.
02:21And I'm Jess.
02:22And we're sisters here to win the gavel.
02:25Let's hope our plans don't unravel.
02:26Hmm, how's your antiques knowledge?
02:29We do like nice things.
02:32Well, I do.
02:33Will you work well as a team?
02:35You're the boss of it, aren't you?
02:37Jo was a head teacher, so she's very bossy.
02:40What are your tactics?
02:42If we see a stall and it's not jumping out to us, anything on there,
02:45we're going to move on because we've only got an hour.
02:48And I can't run very fast, so no, our legs are only little.
02:52Sounds like a plan.
02:54Let's get this show on the road.
02:56Hello, team.
02:58Hi.
02:58Hello.
02:59Oh, my goodness.
03:00Put those antiques down.
03:02You're not supposed to be looking at anything yet.
03:03Are you very excited?
03:05Oh, yeah.
03:07Before you go out shopping, what's the first thing you're going to need?
03:11Money.
03:12Money.
03:12You are absolutely right.
03:13Who is up for having the money on the red?
03:16Hat.
03:16Oh, Pat.
03:17What about over on the blues?
03:19Jo.
03:19I'll hand it over.
03:21OK.
03:22You will also need one of my notoriously tricky challenges.
03:27Now, what is the final, but possibly most important thing
03:31you're going to need to go bargain hunting today?
03:33An expert.
03:34You're very in sync, ladies.
03:36I like that.
03:37Are you ready?
03:38Yes.
03:38OK, off you go.
03:40Enjoy.
03:41Enjoy.
03:42Oh, they're a lively bunch, aren't they?
03:44But what are they looking for in their expert?
03:46Somebody who is knowledgeable.
03:48Someone who is patient.
03:50Someone who's got a good sense of humour.
03:53Kind.
03:54And someone who won't let us run out of time.
03:56Well, that's me.
03:59For the reds, it's Raj Bisram.
04:02And for the blues.
04:03Joe and Jess, you have me.
04:05Hello.
04:06It's Thomas Forrester.
04:08Time to check out those challenges.
04:10An item with a connection to birds.
04:15Antique or vintage fashion accessory.
04:18Right, teams?
04:19Let the shopping commence.
04:23Let's go and find those bargains.
04:25Let's go.
04:25Go.
04:26And they're off.
04:28The reds are quick to find something for their bird-related challenge.
04:32What about this?
04:33Well, yes.
04:35Is it modern?
04:35I think it could be.
04:37Despite the connection to birds, this modern cane is a no.
04:41Thomas has spotted this cute painted cabinet and has a question for the blues.
04:45What do you call these here?
04:48A triangle.
04:49Yeah, but what does it look like on an animal?
04:52Dovetail.
04:52Dovetail.
04:53There we are, dovetail.
04:55There we are.
04:55These are mahogany lined.
04:58But is that going to sell?
04:59Oh, it's sweet, isn't it?
05:00It's sweet, but is it going to sell?
05:02People love little collector's cabinets.
05:04How much is it, Thomas?
05:05Well, I don't know.
05:06One twenty.
05:07Shall I ask what the best is for it?
05:09A hundred?
05:10A hundred, really?
05:11No, that's all good.
05:12I like that.
05:13Seriously, ninety quid.
05:14Seriously, ninety quid.
05:15Thank you for that.
05:17It's got, it's Edwardian, so it's, you know, it's got a lot of age to it.
05:20We'll keep that in mind.
05:22Yeah.
05:22For our big, okay.
05:24Yeah, yeah, maybe for your big spend.
05:25So this Edwardian cabinet goes on the back burner.
05:29Linda has spotted more birds for their challenge.
05:32What do you think that is?
05:33That is a stool, and do you know what it's made of?
05:36No.
05:37This is all, absolutely, well done, well done.
05:40With this beautiful pattern's mother of pearl, you can see the birds on there.
05:44As attractive as it is, it's not that saleable a piece of religion.
05:47Yeah.
05:47I mean, I should think that's quite an expensive piece as well.
05:51Yeah, yeah.
05:52Three hundred and fifty.
05:54Yes.
05:54It's a bit out of our budget, I'd say, yes.
05:56Yes, yes.
05:56Okay, just keep going then.
05:58Nice, but not affordable.
06:00Sorry, ladies.
06:01Back with the blues, Jess is checking out the maker of this colourful vase.
06:06Anita Harris.
06:07What do you like about the Anita Harris vase?
06:10We like the colours.
06:11Do you?
06:11Yeah, it's vibrant.
06:12It's got her signature.
06:13Yeah, that's nice, isn't it?
06:15A nice early mark to it.
06:16What's the best price on that one?
06:18You were really drawn to that, weren't you?
06:20Yeah.
06:21Why, Jess?
06:22Because it was colourful, and it's something I would have in my...
06:26We can do 60 on that one.
06:28What was the ticket price?
06:3080.
06:30You've got a good discount there, haven't you?
06:33Yeah.
06:34Well, you can think about that, can't you?
06:36Yes.
06:37No problem.
06:39The Anita Harris vase is a maybe.
06:41Over with the Reds, what's Raj cooing about?
06:46Oh.
06:46Oh.
06:47Oh, my goodness.
06:49Ah, a cockerel.
06:50Definitely a contender for your challenge.
06:53What about that?
06:54Is it cast iron?
06:56Yeah.
06:56What do you think?
06:57It's like this is a doorstop.
06:59I like that.
06:59I quite like that.
07:01You like that?
07:01Oh, if you both like it.
07:02Does it matter then it's got...
07:04Not at all.
07:05No.
07:05It's got wear and tear.
07:07Do you want to ask him what he can do?
07:08Go on, Lyn, do.
07:09What's your staff price?
07:11I'll do it for a tenner.
07:13Tenner?
07:14How about eight?
07:16I can't go lower than that.
07:17Ladies, I think that ten is...
07:21Ten is?
07:21I think it's fair.
07:22I was just thinking nine, yeah, because of the option.
07:25Yes.
07:25Oh, yeah.
07:27Yeah, go on now.
07:28Oh, yeah.
07:28Oh, there we go.
07:29Well done.
07:30Well done.
07:30I mean, you know, you took control there.
07:33You took control.
07:34Okay, fantastic.
07:35I think you should shake the man's hand then.
07:37Thank you very much.
07:39The cockerel doorstop is the Reds' first buy and ticks off their challenge to find something
07:45with a connection to birds.
07:47Whoa, that's our first item.
07:4915 minutes on the clock.
07:51Back to the blues and something has caught Jessie's eye.
07:54Do you know what's really nice is that pink palette brooch.
07:57It is nice.
07:58A brooch would work for your fashion accessory challenge.
08:01It's on copper.
08:02It's copper, is it?
08:02Yes, it's enamel on copper.
08:04Sort of, really sort of, I'd say artisan made, isn't it?
08:07Copper would have been applied with this enamel, then it would have been fired.
08:11How much is it?
08:1212.
08:13That's 12 pounds.
08:15I really like that.
08:17I really like that.
08:18And I think if it was nine, so it would give us...
08:23No, you know, at nine pounds, you're never going to make lots of money on it.
08:27If we come back...
08:27You can come back.
08:28Okay, okay.
08:30Sorry.
08:31I'm putting my foot down there.
08:33You are.
08:33I am.
08:35Nine pounds.
08:36Thomas has spoken and the brooch is parked for now.
08:39These colourful vases have caught the attention of the Reds.
08:43Orange is my favourite colour.
08:45Yeah.
08:46Oranges.
08:46Yeah, I think it's a lovely, happy, vibrant colour.
08:50Yes.
08:50So now, we've done the challenge.
08:52Let's think about things you like.
08:53We've got a big spend now, so something with a bit of oomph in it.
08:56Yeah.
08:57Okay.
08:58Are you going to perhaps jewellery or something silver?
09:00Yes.
09:01Well, I know you like shiny, shiny things.
09:04Okay, well, let's keep going till we find a jeweller.
09:06Right.
09:07Okay.
09:08The Reds pass on the ceramics and head off in search of bling.
09:12The Blues have found an item but lost their expert.
09:15Where's Thomas gone?
09:17Thomas.
09:17Yes.
09:18Come back, our expert.
09:21Look, this is pretty.
09:23It's very pretty, isn't it?
09:25Isn't it?
09:25It's lovely.
09:26It's almost like a Berlin work.
09:27So these tapestries were printed in Berlin.
09:30That's what we call them, Berlin works.
09:32And it's on a sort of a William IV, so a William IV base.
09:36So it's a good 19th century piece.
09:38Very decorative.
09:39Do they sell?
09:40Well, it all depends on price.
09:42I mean, at auction, that's £60 to £80.
09:44Shall we ask the price?
09:45Yeah, I think it's going to be more, but I will find out.
09:47Stay there.
09:48Keep your fingers crossed.
09:50Right.
09:51OK.
09:52I'm afraid it's a bit too rich for us.
09:55Oh.
09:55It's £210.
09:56Come on then.
09:57OK, onward.
09:59At £210, the tapestry inset table is a no.
10:03With over 20 minutes gone and nothing bought, the Blues need a plan.
10:07So, we haven't bought anything.
10:09No, not yet.
10:10I think we should stay outside, just have a look while it's not raining.
10:13Yeah.
10:13And have a look round here and see if we find anything.
10:16OK, brilliant.
10:16You know, now you've still got 40 minutes.
10:19But, Thomas, a 40 minutes will fly by.
10:21You need to focus.
10:23The Reds have tracked down some jewellery.
10:26See, that broke.
10:27That's only £29, right?
10:28Yes.
10:29It's a lovely piece.
10:31It's a silver marker seat, that one.
10:33Nice quality.
10:35Yeah, I actually quite like it.
10:37I mean, it is a silver and it's markers it, and it's quite attractive.
10:41It is pretty, I have to be honest.
10:43What price could you do that for?
10:45I could probably do £20 on that one.
10:47Ā£20?
10:48That's good.
10:50I think so.
10:50Ladies, I mean, yeah, it's silver, markers it.
10:53If that doesn't make £20 to £30, I would be surprised.
10:56Wow.
10:56I think that's quite nice.
10:58Yeah.
10:58Can we put it on the back burner?
10:59Because we've got a big logo.
11:01Yeah, yeah, sure.
11:02That's a good idea.
11:03Thank you very much.
11:03That's a good idea.
11:04We may have been back.
11:06This brooch is one to think about.
11:09The Blues are also looking at jewellery for their antique or vintage fashion accessory challenge.
11:15What's this here?
11:16What's that round thing there?
11:19Yeah, sort of Mexican.
11:21Yeah, with the sun on it.
11:23And this is abalone.
11:25It's silver, which is popular.
11:27Why do you like it?
11:28Why did you spot it?
11:29The colours again, I think.
11:30Yeah, okay.
11:31We like something with a bit of colour.
11:32Something that looks homemade and loved.
11:35Quite hippie-ish, isn't it?
11:37Do you want to call that your fashion item?
11:38Yes.
11:39You do?
11:39Unless we see something else.
11:41Okay.
11:42Because we can have two, can't we?
11:43Well, you could have two.
11:44Ā£20.
11:45I mean, you do like to go for the cheap, don't you?
11:47Okay.
11:47What would your best price be on that?
11:49May I have a little look?
11:53How about £15 on that?
11:55Ā£15.
11:55I think that's quite good.
11:57Would you do £14?
11:58So we got the pound for the...
12:00Oh my gosh.
12:00Oh my gosh.
12:01Just in case it goes to £15.
12:02I'm going to walk away now.
12:05Please.
12:06Jess is all over this.
12:08You would?
12:09Yes.
12:09Yeah.
12:10Oh, yes.
12:11Do you want to buy that?
12:11Yes, please.
12:12Oh, right.
12:12Okay.
12:13Fair enough.
12:14Thank you very much.
12:16The Blues bag their first item.
12:18This silver and shell brooch, which ticks off their fashion accessory challenge.
12:23As a brooch, on a coat or something.
12:25Yeah.
12:26Or on your caftan.
12:27Interesting fashion tips from Thomas.
12:30The Reds have found some silver, but something is worrying Pat.
12:34Just not used to spending big money, Raj.
12:36Well, here's your chance.
12:38I'm sure you're going to find it very easy.
12:41Yes.
12:41Okay, most of us do.
12:42All right.
12:44Strange little figures there.
12:46Yeah, they're just going to be dust collectors.
12:48I don't want them to make.
12:50How much are the play settings?
12:51They're over £400.
12:53Oh!
12:54Oh!
12:55You see, ladies?
12:55We wanted to spend big money, but we just quite haven't got that.
12:59Not that one.
12:59Well, then we'll find something in between, okay?
13:01Yeah, okay.
13:02While the Reds keep looking for a big spend they can afford,
13:06we pass the halfway mark, and Jess has found something illuminating for the Blues.
13:12It's a great thing.
13:13Joe, these are nice.
13:14These lamps aren't they?
13:15They are quite fun.
13:16They are really coming back in fashion.
13:18These glass bowl ceiling lights lit up interiors from the 1920s to the 1950s,
13:24and earned the name Flycatchers for obvious reasons.
13:28They are actually coming.
13:29Oh, I think they're really nice.
13:30Now, that one's got, that one's missing its chains.
13:32It doesn't really matter that the chains aren't there,
13:34and that one's got those little hooks as well.
13:36Which ones do you like, or do you?
13:39I particularly like that one.
13:41The Art Deco one?
13:42Yeah.
13:42Yeah.
13:43Yeah.
13:44And it's almost sort of a red, white, and blue.
13:46Okay.
13:47But do you want to find out the best price?
13:48Do you want to go and do that, Jo?
13:49I'll go and do that.
13:50Go on.
13:51Yeah, go on.
13:51Do you like that one as well?
13:53I do.
13:53Well, why don't you two go in and buy them as a job lot?
13:57Same plan.
13:58Good plan.
13:59Two for one.
13:59Two for one.
14:00In you go.
14:01So it's time for our sisters to turn on the charm.
14:04That one's perfect, but this one's for a little chip.
14:07Okay.
14:08Well, you know, yeah.
14:09I could do.
14:09I'll do you.
14:10If you pay the price on that, I'll let you have that one for nothing.
14:13How about that?
14:13So that's what, 20 quid?
14:1535.
14:1535.
14:16Can we do the two for 30?
14:18Let's do that.
14:18No, thank you.
14:19Done?
14:20Yeah?
14:21Well done, you.
14:21Yeah.
14:23These two glass ceiling shades are item two for the blues.
14:2720 minutes remaining.
14:29This pair look promising for the red's big spend.
14:33How much are those pair of scent bottles?
14:35Those are 120 for the pair.
14:38Could you do them for 75?
14:39No, they'd need to be 95.
14:41It'd be the absolute death on them.
14:42Okay.
14:43Wow.
14:43There's one for you, and there's one for you.
14:46That's what we checking for, right?
14:47When you buy scent bottles, right, one of the most important things, the tops, right?
14:51Yeah.
14:51You've got to make sure that it fits in snugly.
14:54If it's loose, the chances are it's not the right top.
14:57They do.
14:58I would say that these are the original tops to these bottles.
15:00Where's the hallmark ride?
15:02Is there one on there?
15:03It's just there.
15:04Ah, yes.
15:05Do you see?
15:05Yes, yes, yes.
15:06Yeah, that's right.
15:07How old do you think?
15:091908.
15:10So they've got the Birmingham 1908s.
15:12Yeah.
15:12They've got age to them.
15:14I quite like them.
15:15Well, I do.
15:16What was the price again?
15:1795.
15:17Yeah.
15:18Yeah.
15:18Okay, ladies.
15:19Why don't we shake the ladies' hand at 95?
15:22Okay, my lovely.
15:22Thank you very much indeed.
15:24Thank you very much.
15:25Thanks very much indeed.
15:32So now, you can buy whatever you like, whatever money, all I need is a pound.
15:3915 minutes to go and the Blues are checking out some furniture for their big spend.
15:43Look, they're more modern though, aren't they?
15:45Expensive, isn't it, furniture?
15:47680.
15:48Oh, my goodness.
15:49Come on, you two.
15:50No.
15:51Oh, there you are.
15:51Come on.
15:52Some big furniture over here.
15:53Oh, right.
15:54Oh, yeah.
15:55Pretty Edwardian, satin wood.
15:57That's quite similar to what you have said.
15:58Yeah, exactly.
15:58The Chester George.
15:59That's £2,800.
16:02Oh, step away, ladies.
16:04It's pretty, but pricey.
16:06See, what I showed you was nice, wasn't it?
16:08Maybe we need to go back.
16:09Yeah, maybe you need to go back.
16:10We've got time, we've got time.
16:11We can wonder.
16:14What are the Reds searching for?
16:16Something colourful.
16:17Yeah, I think something colourful.
16:19Something like that.
16:20What's that?
16:21Do you know what that's made of?
16:23What that is?
16:24No.
16:25Okay, this is called cloasoni.
16:27Basically, it's enamel.
16:28They put all the little wires around to make the shape of the flowers
16:32and et cetera, and then it's filled in with enamel.
16:34This is a nice decorative plate, but at auction, they're not that saleable.
16:39Let's go.
16:40Okay, because it's not going to make us any money.
16:43No.
16:43We'll move on.
16:44As they continue looking, Thomas has found some silver for the Blues.
16:50Which is quite nice here.
16:51I like a bit of silver.
16:52And it's, what is it?
16:53Is it a tea set with the sugar bowl?
16:56Scottish, silver, art.
16:57That's like a tea strainer, that big spoon.
17:00It's a tea set.
17:00Yeah, because you've got the sugar bowl and all the sugar spoons.
17:03It's going to be...
17:04Well, I don't know.
17:05Well, you've got quite a lot of money.
17:08Yes, £256 to be exact, Blues.
17:12Ā£295.
17:13Ā£295.
17:13I mean, you're not close with a discount.
17:15Okay.
17:15But you could go back and look at your chest of drawers you like.
17:19So what do you think that would go at auction?
17:21That could make £200 to £300.
17:23But it's already top end.
17:24Yes, it is, it is.
17:25But you've got the money.
17:27You'd have to be quite a lot off.
17:28Ā£260.
17:29Ā£260.
17:30Okay.
17:30I don't think you've got £260 now, have you?
17:32No.
17:32But thank you.
17:33You've come here first.
17:34Yes.
17:35They should have come here first.
17:36So the boxed silver is just out of reach.
17:40Less than ten minutes to go and the Reds are having a team talk.
17:45We can either start browsing some more or we have to go back and get the markersy brooch.
17:49I know it's cheap, but we're running out of time.
17:51I think we'll go back.
17:52Go back.
17:53I think so, do you?
17:54Yeah.
17:55That's right.
17:56A little bit of a run.
17:57We can have a little bit of a look on the way.
17:59So while the Reds return to the £20 brooch they spotted earlier,
18:04the Blues have gone back to the painted cabinet, which they negotiated to £90.
18:08But can they get a better deal?
18:12We've come full circle.
18:13Oh, well done.
18:14Yes, I know.
18:15So the chest of drawers, really pretty.
18:17What can your very best be?
18:2180.
18:22Can we say 75?
18:24Done.
18:25It was done.
18:25Thank you, done.
18:29Ā£75.
18:31The deal is done.
18:32This cabinet ticks off the Blues' big spend and completes their shop.
18:36Are you happy?
18:37Yeah, very happy.
18:38I had our big spend.
18:39We've got our fucking big spend.
18:39I don't want to go through it again.
18:41It's been far too traumatic.
18:45We'll buy you a coffee.
18:46I need more than that.
18:47Come on, out we go.
18:48Please, coffee, coffee.
18:49Coffee.
18:50Well done, Blues.
18:52Go and have a cuppa.
18:54With five minutes to go, the Reds are heading back to the Markazit brooch.
18:57But on the way, they've spotted this.
19:00There's a pool pottery vase over here.
19:02It's got orange on it.
19:03Yes.
19:04Oh, yeah, you are.
19:04It's got orange on it.
19:05I can't believe I'm saying that.
19:07I'm attracted to something that's called orange.
19:08Let's ask and see how much the best on that is.
19:12The best would be 50.
19:1450.
19:15It's got everything you were looking for.
19:17You were drawn to it.
19:18Well, I like it, yeah.
19:19You like orange.
19:20I think this holds more substance than the brooch.
19:23Because you like it and you were drawn to it.
19:25It's a happy colour.
19:27It is a happy colour, you're right.
19:28A warm colour.
19:28It is a happy colour.
19:29If that was an auction, it would be estimated £30 to £50, right?
19:34It's got £78 on the ticket.
19:36The lady has said that we can have it for £50.
19:38Maybe if you've got another fiver, I would say yes, 100%.
19:41It's £50, you're absolutely...
19:43Yes.
19:44If I take £2 off, I can go to £48.
19:46I can't go any lower.
19:48Yeah.
19:48Yeah, we'll go for it.
19:49Let's shake the lady's hand.
19:51Yes.
19:51Well done, ladies.
19:52Well done, ladies.
19:53Thank you ever so much.
19:55Very kind.
19:55So this colourful pool pottery vase is item three for the Reds.
20:01I hope you've raked in some profits, teams, because your shopping is over.
20:05I think that's a day well done.
20:07Well done.
20:08Well done.
20:08Thank you for all your time.
20:09Let's go and have a cup of tea.
20:11Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.
20:14Needing an item with a connection to birds, they paid £9 for this cockerel-shaped cast
20:19iron doorstop.
20:22This pair of early 20th century silver and glass scent bottles cost £95, ticking off their big spend.
20:30And finally, they went for this vibrant 1970s design pool pottery vase, £48 paid.
20:39Ladies, it looks like you had a wonderful time. Look at those big beaming smiles.
20:43Mild.
20:44Oh, it was fun.
20:45Yes.
20:45Yeah, good fun.
20:46Really good fun.
20:47So, Linda, out of your three purchases, which was your favourite?
20:50I think my favourite, uh, scent bottles.
20:53So, of course, they were your big spend as well, weren't they?
20:56Yes.
20:56Well done.
20:56What about you, Pat? What was your favourite?
20:58I'm going to say the orange pool pottery vase. I just love the colour orange.
21:04Very vibrant, isn't it?
21:06Nice warm, bright colour, just like myself.
21:09Now, if you had a crystal ball, what would you say,
21:12Linda, is going to make you the most profit?
21:14Well, I think the doorstop, yes.
21:16And I have to say, it was a poultry purchase.
21:19Yes!
21:20Not very much money at all.
21:21See what I did there, right?
21:22Yes, what you did there.
21:25What about you, Pat? What do you think is going to make you the most profit?
21:27I'm on the same wavelength. I think it will be the cockerel doorstop.
21:31Gosh, they're very in sync, these ladies.
21:33Aren't they, Geoff?
21:34Well, they are.
21:34But it's not surprising.
21:35They've known each other since they were 17 years old,
21:38and they lived next door to each other.
21:40Oh, well, not that long.
21:42Yeah, only a couple of years ago.
21:44Yes!
21:46So, what did you spend in total, ladies?
21:49Ā£152.
21:50So, one of you's got £148 to hand over to Raj.
21:54Thank you very much.
21:55Spend it wisely, yes.
21:57Without a doubt.
21:58You always do.
22:01What are you going to do with it, Raj?
22:02Invest it wisely.
22:05While Raj goes off to find his bonus bite,
22:08let's remind ourselves what the blue team bought.
22:11This Mexican silver and shell brooch met my challenge to buy an antique or vintage fashion accessory.
22:17Ā£14 paid.
22:20These 20th century glass ceiling shades, costing £30, were item number two.
22:28And for their big spend, they paid £75 for a hand-painted Edwardian four-drawer collector's cabinet.
22:37Joe and Jess, did you have a fun time?
22:39We had a great time.
22:41Really good.
22:41Didn't we, Thomas?
22:42We did.
22:42We had a great time.
22:43Did you manage to keep him under control?
22:49Now tell me, out of your three purchases, Jo, what was your favourite?
22:53I liked the silver Mexican brooch.
22:56And of course, it was your challenge as well, which was to find a vintage or antique fashion accessory.
23:01Yeah.
23:02So, big tick in the challenge box from me.
23:04Very well done.
23:05OK, what about you, Sister Jess?
23:07What do you think?
23:07Well, I particularly like the glass Art Deco lampshades.
23:12Two for £30.
23:14Two for £30.
23:15What do you think of the three items that you purchased, it's going to make you the most money?
23:19I think it's going to be the ceiling lights.
23:22I think it's going to be the Edwardian draw box.
23:26The little collector's cabinet.
23:27Yes.
23:27So, what did you spend in total, my loves?
23:30We spent £119, weren't we, thrifting?
23:34You were.
23:35So, that means one of you's got £181 to hand over to Thomas.
23:39Now, what are you going to do with it?
23:40Hopefully not spend at all.
23:42Oh.
23:43Oh, oh.
23:44While Thomas goes bonus by shopping, I'm off to meet a man who has a talent for transforming unloved furniture.
23:57We see a lot of so-called brown furniture on Bargain Hunt.
24:02And whilst it's not always as sought after as it once was, there's one man that can't get enough of
24:07it.
24:08Somerset-based painter David Mendel has a passion for turning the drab into the dramatic.
24:17David, what a pleasure it is to be here.
24:20We're surrounded by pieces that are a wonderful mix.
24:24So, this is obviously an original piece.
24:26And then we've got these lamp bases.
24:28Is this your work?
24:29Oh, yes.
24:30I mean, these are modern lamps.
24:32Oh, I thought they were going to be stone.
24:34No.
24:35No, no, no, no.
24:36I mean, I have these made.
24:39These are really painted.
24:40Look like granite.
24:41Those are like red porphyry.
24:43Some of David's pieces are extremely detailed, like this cabinet, with its Chinese or chinoiserie
24:50inspiration.
24:51But other techniques are even more fun.
24:53This table, which is French, but the top, which is just wood, was a particularly hideous bright orange brown.
25:04And so I repainted the top to look like granite.
25:07You put down a dust sheet, put it on the floor, and make the most enormous mess.
25:11Oh, that sounds fun.
25:12It is.
25:12You know, with black paint, white paint, beige paint, until you've sort of got the sort of mess you want.
25:21I'm keen to see David at work, so we're heading to his workshop to see a piece he has on
25:26the go.
25:27This is what I'm currently working on at the moment.
25:30Right.
25:31It was a brown table, which I think I've perhaps paid four or five pounds for, which is going to
25:36be
25:36a black and gold table that will slightly hark at that very pretty Chinese work table there.
25:43If you lift the lid, you'll see what I'm basing this table on.
25:48Look at that. It's so fresh, isn't it?
25:49Which is that rather simpler little pattern.
25:52And we're turning it into a games table, as opposed to a work table.
25:56Right.
25:57And so it'll be something to put between a couple of chairs.
26:01That's utterly beautiful.
26:03So what are you doing and how are you doing it?
26:05The first thing to do was to take off all the brown polish,
26:09then give the table a coat of rather red-brown undercoat,
26:13and then you start putting on black paint.
26:16It is absolutely standard blackboard paint you get in any hardware shop.
26:20It's lovely to draw or paint on top of.
26:22And then with white carbon paper, which shows up very nicely on the black,
26:28and you literally just draw around the original drawing.
26:32It's just to give you a guide.
26:34And that comes out on the black.
26:36And then you paint, which I'm using good quality gold paint.
26:41And I'll probably make a mistake now, is add in the leaves.
26:47You have to do nice long strokes for leaves and loose, exactly.
26:52So here I've added in some black veins for the central bit of the leaf,
26:58just to make it a little bit more detailed,
27:01like the pattern on the inside of the antique tabletop.
27:05I'll do one more leaf, and then I think you can have a go.
27:09I don't think that's wise.
27:11Well, I'm not risking my time.
27:13Oh, good. Phew!
27:15You can have this, which I did specially, thinking that you might want to have a go.
27:21So, I mean, your hand was so confident.
27:23I think one has to point in the right direction.
27:25Generally, it's a good idea to go the way the leaf goes, which is towards the point.
27:29Oh, I think I'm ruining it.
27:31No, you're not. It looks perfect.
27:32When you get to an end, you have to turn the brush, so it takes it out to a point.
27:38That's working beautifully.
27:39It's not looking great, but it's not looking too bad.
27:41I think it's looking extremely good, actually.
27:43Oh, I think you're very good.
27:44They're looking exactly the same as mine.
27:46I think they do.
27:47You're very kind.
27:48So, what happens next with your very beautiful table?
27:51The next thing is to give the whole thing an antiquing varnish.
27:57Make the gold a little bit richer and deeper.
28:00Make the black a bit less jet black.
28:02Just to blend everything in together so it's not quite so terribly contrasty.
28:07It's probably at least four full days' work.
28:12So, even if you sold something like this for several hundred pounds,
28:17you'd be making a lot less than the minimum wage.
28:21A labour of love.
28:22Yeah, it's fun. It's fun to do.
28:24David, you are incredibly talented.
28:27I love what you do in every single way.
28:30Remember what the table looked like before?
28:32Well, here it is.
28:34Fully transformed.
28:36Stunning.
28:37Now, back to our teams to see if they can transform their purchases into profits
28:43over at the auction.
28:48We have travelled south to Lion Bay Auctions to be with auctioneer Harry.
28:52Thank you so much for having us, Harry.
28:54It's our pleasure. Thanks for joining us.
28:55Now, shall we start with our reds?
28:56So, we've got Pat and Linda who went shopping with Raj.
29:00OK.
29:01And the first item they purchased was this rather wonderful little doorstop here, the cockerel.
29:05Now, I have challenged them to find an item with a connection to birds.
29:10How is the market for doorstops on the south coast?
29:13It's good.
29:14People like it.
29:14Yeah, there's a lot of countryside cottages.
29:16It's not got the age that I suspect that they think it has.
29:21So, what's your estimate?
29:22£10 to £20.
29:23Well, they only paid £9 for it.
29:25Oh, they've bought really well.
29:25Now, their second purchase, this pair of sort of bottles and stoppers here,
29:30typically Edwardian, aren't they?
29:32They are Edwardian.
29:33Now, we've put them as perfume decanters in the catalogue.
29:36Well, there's a lot of perfume to go in there.
29:37They're huge.
29:37Yeah.
29:38They are really pretty.
29:39They're very sparkly.
29:40They are.
29:41Sparkly sells.
29:42£80 to £120.
29:43OK, well, £95 paid.
29:45I think there's going to be the sweet smell of success, Christina.
29:49Oh, I love that.
29:49Well done, Harry.
29:50Let's move on to their third and final purchase.
29:53They bought this rather wonderful bright orange pool vase, 1970s.
29:58Now, Pat loved this.
30:00I'm not a huge fan of pool, but I can see the attraction of this piece.
30:04It sort of blends with mid-century furniture, you know,
30:07that's still popular in the market.
30:08So, what is your estimate on the pool?
30:10£20 to £40.
30:12OK, well, they paid £48 for it.
30:14So, we might struggle to get there, but here's hoping.
30:17Well, look, let's move over to our blue team, Jess and Joe,
30:20who went shopping with Thomas Forrester.
30:22Now, their first purchase was the Mexican rather chunky brooch at the front there.
30:28It's a good size, isn't it?
30:29I challenged them to find an antique or vintage fashion accessory.
30:33I think they've nailed it.
30:34No, I like it.
30:34It's got a bit of colour to it, hasn't it?
30:35It's £15 to £30.
30:37Well, they paid only £14 for it.
30:39It started well, haven't we?
30:40They're going to do well, yeah.
30:41Yeah.
30:41Their second purchase was the two glass profanier-type ceiling lanterns here.
30:47I think that this may be an issue because I think they're a little bit out of fashion.
30:53They are beautiful and they are very cleverly made.
30:56Just think that fashion might be against them on this occasion.
30:59So, what's your estimate?
31:01£20 to £40.
31:02They only paid £30 for them.
31:04OK, so my negativity may not be...
31:07Yeah, I wouldn't be too down in the old children.
31:09Yeah, I think they're going to do OK.
31:10Let's move on to their third purchase,
31:11which Jess thinks is going to make them the most profit.
31:13It is, of course, this rather lovely mahogany and painted,
31:16the beautiful painted drawers, a sort of table cabinet.
31:19Mm.
31:19You know apprentice pieces?
31:21There's a lot of people who collect those sorts of things
31:24and this sort of fulfils that brief.
31:26This has not got the brown furniture curse.
31:29No, indeed.
31:30£30 to £60.
31:31OK, well, it was their big spend.
31:33Ā£75 paid.
31:34Ooh, I think it's at the top end.
31:37OK, interesting.
31:38Now, will you be on the rostrum for us?
31:40Yes, I'm going to be on the rostrum
31:41and I'll be joined by my colleague, Simon.
31:44Marvellous.
31:44£42 now, £45, £48, £50 now.
31:47And I'm selling...
31:50Pat, Linda, how are you feeling?
31:52So excited.
31:53So excited.
31:55Confident. Confident.
31:56Wow, she's feeling confident.
31:57I know, I know, it's fantastic.
31:59Yeah, I like that.
32:00Brimming with confidence.
32:01And why not?
32:02And why not?
32:03You bought some really lovely things.
32:05We don't.
32:06Yes.
32:06Some really did.
32:08Well, let's have a bit of a reminder,
32:09because your first lot is about to go under the hammer now.
32:12It was, of course, your challenge
32:13with this rather wonderful cockerel doorstop.
32:16Ā£9, Raj.
32:17Are you ready?
32:18Yes.
32:18All right, here it comes.
32:20Here it comes.
32:21Here it comes.
32:21I can start at £20.
32:24Woo!
32:27£22 I have and £25 with me and I'm looking for £28.
32:31Oh, my God!
32:33£28 I have and I'm looking for £30.
32:35It's sick!
32:35£28 I have and I'm looking for £30.
32:37Selling for £28.
32:42Yay!
32:43Good stuff.
32:44Amazing, very well done.
32:46Excellent.
32:46That is a £19 profit on your first lot, ladies.
32:49Very, very well done.
32:51Now, we've got the pair of silver-mounted glass scent bottles,
32:54bottles and stoppers.
32:55Yeah.
32:56You spent £95 on them, OK?
32:59Yeah.
32:59OK, here we go.
32:59Here we go.
33:00Good luck.
33:01I'm looking to start the bidding at £100.
33:05Ā£80 I have.
33:06Ā£85 on line.
33:07Ā£90 with me.
33:08£90 I have and I'm looking for £95.
33:11Or £95 I now have.
33:12Yes!
33:13One more!
33:13You need another one.
33:14One more!
33:15Do I see £100 anywhere else?
33:17Ā£95 I'm selling for.
33:19Oh!

35:01Yeah, pretty pretty.
35:02And it has got a stamp on the back, but I don't recognise the stamp.
35:05It could be continental silver.
35:08To be safe, they've catalogued it as white metal.
35:11Yeah, okay.
35:12How much did you pay for it, Raj?
35:14I paid £15 for it, so I bought a good deal of it.
35:16Wow, you did.
35:18Is it going to make us any money?
35:20I think it might make a little, but I'm, you know, you're in profit, it's up to you, but...

35:56He's put an estimate of £15 to £30 on it.
35:58Oh, all right.
