00:15:34لا أعرف if you read The Daily Mirror this morning
00:15:36but rather a spooky story
00:15:38about the family who's living in fear
00:15:40of strange goings-on that are driving them from their home
00:15:45Being on the front page of any national newspaper
00:15:47not alone the best-selling one in the country
00:15:49was, I wouldn't say fame, but notoriety
00:15:53We just felt that it was such an important story
00:15:56It was just something that
00:15:58no one, that any of us knew
00:16:01had ever experienced anything like this before
00:16:05Relatives, friends, the police saw it
00:16:08It came off the floor, or nearly a half inch, I should say
00:16:12and I saw it slide off to the right
00:16:14about three and a half to four feet before it came to rest
00:16:17I walked into the room, as I walked into the room
00:16:20the Lego began to fly
00:16:22Marble shooting around the living room
00:16:24cups and saucers, books, chairs
00:16:26We were all just standing in the kitchen
00:16:29all of us together
00:16:30birds, you name it
00:16:33that's supernatural
00:16:36It's said to be Britain's most publicised haunted house
00:16:39a semi-detached in a quiet corner of Enfield
00:16:43It's all very intriguing
00:16:44so we sent Rosalind Morris out ghost hunting
00:16:49Can I rearrange people so that I can do an interview?
00:16:53Can you sit over there and I'll sit where Morris is
00:16:55Morris and I'll sit over here
00:16:56I was working as a BBC radio reporter
00:17:00We didn't have enough to fill the programme on the Sunday
00:17:03and I was sort of threatened all day
00:17:07with if nothing else happens
00:17:09you'll just have to go to Enfield
00:17:10and cover this ghost story
00:17:15I was pretty sceptical
00:17:17I mean, I didn't expect anything to happen
00:17:21and there is a sort of rule in journalism
00:17:24at the moment a reporter turns up
00:17:26the ghost disappears
00:17:36It's now about half an hour
00:17:38since the family settled down for the night
00:17:41and Janet, who's the 11-year-old
00:17:44the one you've been watching most
00:17:46she now seems to be asleep
00:17:47she's not really moving around very much
00:17:49so what happens now?
00:17:52What do you do?
00:17:53I mean, do you just stand here every night and have a look?
00:17:54I usually wait after he's gone to sleep
00:17:57I wait about another half an hour
00:17:58if I don't see any signs of disturbance
00:18:02I go
00:18:03I have to go home sometime, you know
00:18:12I think we ought to go to our sets again
00:18:20I just thought, well, I'd better record what I can
00:18:34did you hear that thump?
00:18:40we've just heard a noise
00:18:41having come downstairs
00:18:42we've just heard a noise upstairs
00:18:45and the chair
00:18:46which was standing by Janet's bed
00:18:48appears to have moved
00:18:53well, Janet appears to be
00:18:55sleeping quite
00:18:57peacefully
00:18:58and she was sleeping
00:18:59when we went down
00:19:00just a few seconds ago
00:19:10now, the chair was by the bed
00:19:11and it's now by the door
00:19:14the chair's been thrown lying, Pete
00:19:15it was more violent than the last time
00:19:20it's just very strange
00:19:25it didn't seem likely that either of the girls could have done it
00:19:30well, I'm hoping I'm not getting the microphone shaking in my hand
00:19:33because that was rather an unnerving experience
00:19:37I don't know what it is
00:19:39but there is something strange going on in that house
00:19:50our little section of semi-detached box-like houses
00:19:54were very, very basic
00:19:56we were definitely working class
00:19:59and to be honest, we were quite poor
00:20:03for many Britons, these are hard times
00:20:06in the last two years
00:20:08Britain has suffered one of the highest inflation rates in Europe
00:20:11and for many Britons
00:20:12it means a real cut in living standards
00:20:14because we...
00:20:16all I can say is
00:20:17whatever struggles I had
00:20:18Janet and Margaret must have been living the same
00:20:20if not worse
00:20:21because they didn't have their dad there either
00:20:26listen, don't feel you're going to be ready for this
00:20:30Margaret, Janet...
00:20:31Peggy's husband was estranged
00:20:32I never saw him
00:20:35and I don't remember
00:20:37them being a happy family
00:20:39or a happy environment
00:20:40for the one and a half million unemployed in Britain
00:20:43the pinch is even more severe
00:20:45the 70s were quite a basic time really
00:20:49we never went on holidays
00:20:52you know, so we just try to amuse ourselves
00:21:02me and Janet
00:21:04I just remember we got on
00:21:06family, living close by
00:21:08we were just drawn together
00:21:10you had to make your own entertainment
00:21:13at the back there was a bit of wasteland
00:21:15and all the kids used to hang out over there
00:21:22it was just general kids stuff really
00:21:26never felt like we was ever in the centre of the universe
00:21:33you know, things always felt on the periphery
00:21:38and then I just remember seeing his E-Type Jaguar
00:21:42parking outside their house
00:21:45and it was just like this vision of colour
00:21:47in this black and white world
00:21:50I felt like he wanted to talk to you
00:21:53and he didn't judge
00:21:59284 Green Street
00:22:01list of incidents commencing 31st August 1977
00:22:081. A heavy chest of drawers reported sliding 6 inches from the wall
00:22:152. Lego pieces seen in high speed transit
00:22:19from parts of the room where no persons were standing
00:22:243. Marbles appearing to emanate from walls and curtains
00:22:29they stop dead without bouncing
00:22:31and are hot to the touch
00:22:354. Persistent raps and knocks moving around the house
00:22:38from no obvious source
00:22:415. Furniture moving
00:22:43chairs moving and turning over
00:22:476. A lamp in the bedroom
00:22:50my father brought a determination to look at the detail
00:22:55he was a person who made his career out of detail
00:22:59making things work
00:23:01I mean, understanding things
00:23:03he's the type of person that, you know, if you give him
00:23:07a radio
00:23:08will take it apart
00:23:10see how it works
00:23:11I mean, there I just switch it on
00:23:15You see, I'm a professional inventor
00:23:18and when I get hold of something
00:23:20I have to dissect it
00:23:22because that's my business
00:23:25he was always very scientifically inclined
00:23:28his mechanical engineering was almost natural
00:23:32and he designed some extraordinary things
00:23:37this particular display as made here
00:23:40is using a 60 watt bulb with two drums revolving outside direction
00:23:51his life had started from hard times and come to better times
00:23:56he'd suffered a huge emotional loss
00:24:00and yet he was a very grounded, realistic, down-to-earth person
00:24:08many times
00:24:09I'm tempted to dismiss some of the more bizarre activity
00:24:13simply because it is easier to accuse the children of cheating
00:24:17than to face the necessity of accepting the impossible
00:24:22but the accumulating evidence is overwhelming
00:24:28two theories
00:24:30one
00:24:31the mind has powers over and above its normal functions
00:24:36and is capable of affecting physical objects
00:24:41two
00:24:43it is a poltergeist
00:24:52it must have been early September on a Thursday
00:24:55we held one of a regular series of meetings for new members
00:25:01I was chairing the meeting
00:25:03it was on nothing other than poltergeists
00:25:12our speaker this evening has investigated all over the country
00:25:16ladies and gentlemen
00:25:17may I welcome on your behalf
00:25:19Nicholas Clyde Loaves
00:25:23so
00:25:23what are poltergeists?
00:25:25I wish I knew
00:25:26I mean the very name itself
00:25:28is a German word
00:25:30meaning a boisterous
00:25:32noisy spirit
00:25:34well
00:25:36what can poltergeists do?
00:25:38firstly
00:25:39they can produce knocks and sounds
00:25:41or even recognisable human voices
00:25:44they are capable of responding to requests or orders
00:25:48either in code
00:25:50one wrap for yes
00:25:52two for no etc
00:25:53or directly
00:25:59I'd already read up something about poltergeists
00:26:02so I knew that this type of experience with similar things happening
00:26:08has been logged for hundreds of years
00:26:11and in fact I think the first reports we have are the Romans
00:26:15they can move objects and project them often considerable distances
00:26:22in some cases ragging even human beings about the place
00:26:28they can alter the temperature of the place
00:26:32normally this is noticed as a drop in temperature
00:26:34but in extreme cases clothes and even houses catch fire
00:26:39furthermore all poltergeists have a human focus
00:26:43it's notorious that they often seem to centre around some disturbed person
00:26:47usually an adolescent
00:26:54often it's a young person at a particular time in their life
00:26:59their emotional energy is creating this sort of force
00:27:05can it therefore be the unconscious mind?
00:27:08if the answer is no
00:27:10then it's back to the drawing board
00:27:12and we shall have to consider seriously
00:27:14the possibility of matter other than normal
00:27:16sources of energy other than normal
00:27:19and perhaps even creation ex nihilo
00:27:21in a fourth dimension
00:27:26the time came for questions
00:27:28and one of the first to put his hand up was
00:27:32Maurice Roos
00:27:34I am at the moment involved in a very interesting poltergeist case in Amville
00:27:39and I've been up three nights with it
00:27:41the phenomena itself has been flying marbles
00:27:44flying Lego bricks
00:27:47last night the chair was shot across the room four foot twice
00:27:52we have so many witnesses
00:27:54we have the police witnesses in the phenomena
00:27:56we also have four newspaper reporters witnessing it
00:28:00I mean this is a most extraordinary case
00:28:03I think Mr. Gross is certainly to be congratulated himself
00:28:06in that the thing still seems to be there while he watches it
00:28:09I would like somebody to come along the shelf
00:28:12it's in Amville
00:28:13it's not very far too far
00:28:15well if there are any other further volunteers
00:28:18perhaps have a word of Maurice Gross afterwards
00:28:21the lecture had finished and people were dispersing
00:28:24Guy Clayfair came up to him
00:28:27they had a brief conversation
00:28:29and the rest as they say is history
00:28:46Guy realized that my father was probably out of his depth
00:28:51and the case needed a steady experienced hand
00:28:56the two of them actually made rather a good team
00:28:59my father being the down to earth one
00:29:02and Guy probably more of a spiritualist persuasion
00:29:09they shared an ambition to fully investigate
00:29:13what had been presented to them as basically a once in a lifetime opportunity
00:29:20this is the tape recorded on the night of Wednesday the 21st of September 1977
00:29:29at 284 Green Street in Enfield
00:29:33the Enfield poltergeist case
00:29:35starting approximately 10pm
00:29:43he was a very unusual man guy
00:29:45I'd never met anyone like him
00:29:48his book called The Flying Cow of all things
00:29:53is a classic on Brazilian magic and the paranormal
00:29:59he seemed almost otherworldly
00:30:02very pale, quietly spoken
00:30:06but when he got onto his subject
00:30:09he knew about it
00:30:11you just have to record a vast amount of data
00:30:13to get the really worthwhile stuff
00:30:15I'm not saying they're supernatural
00:30:17there's no such thing as supernatural
00:30:18if anything happens it's natural
00:30:20we just don't understand it
00:30:25there's Laura filming a story here tonight
00:30:27with all the cameras
00:30:29we normally have this light on
00:30:31and that one
00:30:32just turn that light off
00:30:34this is the condition
00:30:35as we have it every night
00:30:37it's always light
00:30:38we're never afraid of the dark
00:30:44they were saying that
00:30:46this has never really been proven
00:30:49photographically
00:30:50and they wanted me to stay on
00:30:54I wanted to stay on as well
00:30:56because it was such a fascinating occurrence
00:31:18we'd spend the evenings
00:31:20sitting down in the lounge
00:31:23we had remote triggered cameras
00:31:26tape recorders running
00:31:28with a live audio feed to the room
00:31:32so we could hear what was going on
00:31:35and very well
00:31:35you know very slight
00:31:37any creaking of floorboards
00:31:38and very much
00:32:05there might be a few moments
00:32:08that was not quiteЭx
00:32:08but it was like
