00:00With its mountainous beauty and lush landscape, the Canadian countryside is
00:05as beautiful as it is breathtaking. Many Canadians are discovering rural life
00:12and they're making the move. We are helping them find their perfect country
00:18house. I love how lush it is, like there's definitely a lot of greenery, kind of
00:24magical. It's amazing. I feel like I'm in Barbie's dream house.
00:35Today we're in South Kelowna where we're gonna meet up with Steven and Melissa.
00:39We're pretty much tired of the city life. They want to escape to the country, get
00:43some more land and some peace and quiet. The only catch, they have to get room for
00:47themselves, their kids, grandparents and great-grandparents. If all goes to plan,
00:52maybe some horses too. Challenge accepted.
01:04Hello! You must be Melissa. Yes. I'm Jeff. Nice to meet you. Steve. Good to finally meet you
01:09guys. I've heard a little bit about what you're looking for but I really wanted to
01:12go over it with you in more detail. From what I hear, you want to have the whole
01:15family with you. What do we mean by whole family? So really it would be us, our two
01:20girls that are 10 and 12 and her parents. Okay. And grandma. And her 94 year old
01:26grandma. So four generations. Four generations. We're gonna need a little bit
01:30of space. We love family.
01:35How Melissa and I met was 20 years ago. It was in a small town called Squamish. We
01:40were at the local pub and we were sitting pretty much almost opposite ends of the pub.
01:45I guess I caught her eye as this ravishing, young, good-looking man. And she came after
01:51me. I had to make the move. Honestly, from that moment forward, we never left each other's side.
02:00In 2006, we were together at this point two years. Went to work that day and I was a tree
02:05faller. We were widening the highway for the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver to Whistler. I ended up
02:12having an excavator bucket hit me in the stomach and go through my pelvis and basically pull my legs
02:19apart. I ended up going to the hospital for definitely a bunch of months. Went through over 83 different
02:25surgeries to reattach things and try and get back to as close to normal as could be. Left the hospital
02:32in a wheelchair and we started trying to do life that way. Over the years of just never giving up,
02:39I eventually got out of a wheelchair and I can somewhat walk a little bit now. His accident was
02:46definitely challenging as we were young. Somehow she found a way to stay with me through this and
02:52you know to me this is this opportunity is a big step for us because it's been so many years
02:57about
02:57just trying to rehab, get better, try and get to as normal of a life as we hoped we could
03:02have. I really
03:04want to give back to her and to the family having this beautiful house and in a country setting and
03:11something we always talked about even before I got hurt and so now that it could almost be a possibility
03:16is pretty exciting. So what we're looking in a house is enough room for the girls to each have their
03:24own
03:24bedroom with bathroom. We need a suite for my parents, hopefully another little area for my 94 year old
03:31grandma. A really big kitchen. I love cooking, my wife loves cooking. Definitely space so one day we can
03:37have horses and I would love to have a flat as yard as possible so that when I do try
03:43and help out with
03:43the chores and upkeep that I have some way of doing it. For our budget we're going to try and
03:49stay within
03:50four to four point five million is kind of where we want to stay. I'm looking forward to seeing
03:54these three houses and maybe that's our forever home. Don't want to move ever again.
04:01If you take just a four hour drive east of Vancouver you'll reach Kelowna, a city that blends urban
04:07energy with natural beauty. With its bustling downtown vibes and stunning views of Okanagan Lake,
04:13it's a place that truly has it all. Head a little further south though and you'll find a quieter more
04:18rural retreat. One that suits Stephen and Melissa who are ready to expand and embrace a lifestyle
04:23focused on family. The first house we have today, I think it's going to check a lot of the boxes.
04:31Looking at it from the curb, what are our first impressions? Beautifully landscaped. Yeah. I love
04:36the three car garage that's separated. Dub room from my truck and her vehicle. Everyone up here has got
04:41the toys so you know you got to put the winter ones away, bring the summer ones out. I would
04:45say the
04:45color of the house would probably be not my first choice but it's a more traditional look to me.
04:49Yeah. A little bit of paint. Yeah. Now what do you say we go inside and take a look? Let's
04:53go. Let's do it.
05:06Okay. First impressions as we walk in. Looks big. Yeah lots of room. We've got the wrap around
05:14staircase. Fireplace greets you right as you come in. Now a day like today you probably don't need to
05:18turn that on but you know you guys get a lot of snow here in the winter don't you? Yes.
05:22Yeah. Yeah.
05:22Gonna put your boots there. Yeah. Yep. Let them dry off right as you come in. The craftsmanship was
05:26amazing. The high ceilings, the the arches like that was kind of molding. But all the rooms were kind
05:32of boxy so I didn't really have that warm feeling as I walked right in. What do you say we
05:36go check out the
05:37kitchen? Let's go. Let's do it. Okay well we made it to the kitchen. Lots of natural light which is
05:49fantastic. What do we think? Yeah the layout's good. You can get around even with the bigger crowds in
05:56here. I love the big range. I love cooking. If you love cooking I mean this must be jumping out
06:01of you.
06:02Definitely. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter. There's definitely enough room for us both cooking in there.
06:06at the same time while even entertaining guests at the same time. The kids. There's enough room for
06:11all of us in there. And you know what from here I mean you can see the backyard. That's nice.
06:15Obviously ideal if you've got a lot of people running around out there. I want to go check out
06:19that backyard but why don't you guys go check out the primary suite and then meet by the pool in
06:23about
06:24510? Sure. Sounds good. All right. See you soon.
06:37I like the crown molding. It's nice. I love the fireplace too right by your bed.
06:41Yeah when we walked in the primary I I love the high ceilings. I love the fireplace right close to
06:46your bed so in the winter time you could turn that on and maybe put a couple glasses of wine
06:50with the
06:50chairs. When I walked into the bathroom I loved the shower, the big tub, the double sinks. Yeah.
06:55And then the other part I liked I liked how you could walk through the back of the bedroom to
07:00that
07:00gym. Right. You could work out and then come right back through that door to go shower and I like
07:05that
07:05a lot too. Yeah that was nice. So what do you think about the house so far? It could work.
07:11We'd have to do
07:11some little renos and painting and stuff. Yeah it's definitely not the open concept that we like.
07:19Definitely lots of room but just not as open. But maybe there's more room out in the backyard so
07:25we should go see Jeff and find out. Yeah let's go. Okay.
07:39Well you found me? Found ya. Now it took a lot of restraint not to jump in that pool because
07:45it is
07:45getting hot out there right now. Initially I think when I walked out into the backyard it was just like
07:51wow you got a gazebo that you could be at or you could be where you're cooking for your guests
07:55on the
07:55other side. Yeah. You got a pool right in the center. Everywhere you look it is definitely
08:00It's well manicured. A stunning backyard and it could easily work for the family no problem.
08:04I think one big thing Jeff that is one of our biggest wish list things is we need enough yard.
08:10Yeah. For farm animals, our kids' horses. Might be a little tricky to get a few horses back there.
08:16Neighbors might not appreciate us. They might not like it. I mean we could get some ducks in the pond.
08:21So what do you think this one is listed for right now?
08:23Oh, 3.8. 3.8? Okay. The size is probably like 4.1-ish. Okay. Well we're getting closer.
08:41You've got six bedrooms, six bathrooms, half an acre. What do you think this one is listed for right now?
08:483.8. 3.8? Okay. Probably like 4.1-ish. Okay. Well we're getting closer.
08:56Right now it's listed for 4.195. So just a hair under 4.2 million.
09:02Yeah, the price is great. We could handle that price for sure. But I think the reason why we want
09:07to move
09:08is we want that bit of land to be able to have farm animals and horses and I think that's
09:13just the one
09:13thing that this place is missing for us. This is House of Number One. We've still got two more to
09:18go.
09:18Two more.
09:18I've got a couple surprises in store for House Number Two that I think you're going to like.
09:23Ready? Let's go. Let's do it. While House Number One's stylish and spacious interior had it as a strong
09:30early contender, the lack of acreage makes it a bit of a harder sell for Stephen and Melissa.
09:36So for this next property, I'm taking them somewhere where potential animals and family alike can roam freely.
09:45Well, right off the gate, literally, that was an incredible walk in. I mean, this driveway?
09:51That was so far.
09:53I know, but also so picturesque.
09:56Oh yeah.
09:56I mean, look at this. What do you think?
09:59Stunning.
10:01Going from the first house and parking on the street to walk in versus this one,
10:05we had to wait at the gate and then walk up that long driveway. It was definitely different,
10:09but amazing. It's beautiful. It was like something that you'd see in a magazine or like a movie.
10:14My only reservation a little bit with, you know, some of my limitations. This is a lot of house.
10:19I'd have to buy a tractor. Someone's got to do the weeds and...
10:23Yeah, a lot of upheat.
10:24You got me impressed so far there, Jeff.
10:27From the outside, we're doing good. Should we take a look in?
10:29Let's go.
10:29Yeah, let's do it.
10:42Well, this is gorgeous.
10:44Love the high ceilings. I love how open it is and I can see the living room, the TV,
10:49so when the Canucks game's on, I can see it while we're cooking.
10:52Now, question for you. He likes the high ceilings. Do you like all the high cabinets?
10:56Well, I like the high ceiling, but yeah, it looks like it's going to be hard to reach some of
11:00those shelves.
11:01There's a little rolling stepladder to come around here.
11:03Yeah.
11:03When we walked into the kitchen, it was just like, the only thing I could think was like, wow,
11:07super bright.
11:08Yeah, the island was huge.
11:09The white with the brass, like it's just totally our style.
11:12I love the range has even the matching gold knobs.
11:16Double ovens.
11:17Oh, double ovens, yes.
11:18Turkeys, it's annoying when you can't have your turkey in if you do a ham and you only have one
11:22oven and...
11:22I mean, there's a whole butler's pantry around the corner with fully stocked beer fridge.
11:26Check another box for me.
11:29I can see a pool out back and I'm going to go take a look at that.
11:32Do you guys want to head upstairs and check out the primary?
11:34Sounds good.
11:34Let's do it.
11:34I'm excited.
11:35Divide and Conquer.
11:36Let's do it.
11:49It's beautiful.
11:50Wow.
11:51I love the fireplace, linear fireplace, TV.
11:55Yeah, need some curtains.
11:57Yeah, definitely need some curtains.
11:58Lots of windows.
11:59From here, you can see your fields.
12:01You can see if you had horses out there.
12:03Oh yeah, that'd be amazing.
12:04And then that bathroom.
12:06Holy crap.
12:06That shower is so big.
12:08You can have a whole family in there.
12:10I don't know, loved everything about it.
12:11I could just see ourselves laying in bed, turning the fireplace on, glass of wine,
12:17looking up at the TV, and then looking out in the field and seeing our horses there.
12:21Yeah, that was nice.
12:35Not the worst backdrop?
12:37No.
12:38Definitely not.
12:39What do you think about this whole backyard?
12:41I mean, it's quite expansive, and you've got the pool over there as well.
12:44You know, first thing I've seen is just this continuous wraparound concrete deck,
12:47which I really loved.
12:48Lots of different entertaining areas as well.
12:51And then you see this pool house that's fully loaded with, like, dishwasher, sink.
12:55I could see having, like, a pizza oven out there, bigger barbecue, smoker.
13:01Yeah, it's nice not to have to have everything in the kitchen and go out to the pool.
13:05We could just do everything close by.
13:06Obviously, this one checks quite a few boxes.
13:09Yeah.
13:09What do we think this one's listed for?
13:13Four, seven, four, eight.
13:16Oh, I'm going to say, based on the last house, four, five, four, six-ish.
13:24I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised that it's right around 4.4 million.
13:30Really?
13:31So it's just a hair under the budget.
13:32But with all of this space, I think that's a pretty good deal.
13:36One hundred percent, that's awesome.
13:37Yeah.
13:37It is at the top of our budget.
13:40We wouldn't have a lot of money left over to do anything else.
13:42So that's something we've got to consider when making the decision.
13:45But the best part is, Jeff has one more house to show us.
13:48Yeah, one more.
13:48You want to go check it out?
13:49Yeah, I really do.
13:50Let's do it.
14:01House number two checked a lot of boxes for Stephen and Melissa, inside and out.
14:06But with it being priced at the upper end of their budget,
14:08they found the idea of maintaining such a large property slightly intimidating.
14:12Not to worry though, I've still got one more option for them.
14:16And this one is far from ordinary.
14:21Welcome to house number three.
14:23A little bit of a contrast from the last one.
14:26Definitely different.
14:27Different for sure, but in a good way.
14:28I mean, this is, this is unique.
14:30This is like, it looks like it's from the future almost.
14:33The center, it looks like a wine, like a, like a winery,
14:36and like almost like represents like a wine barrel,
14:38almost the way the curvature of the roof is.
14:40I can't wait to take a look inside.
14:42I really want to look inside.
14:43Should we head in there?
14:43Let's go.
14:58Holy crap.
14:59Yeah, this is something else, isn't it?
15:03The view is incredible.
15:05And the ceiling's got to be 15, 20 feet, at least.
15:09Oh, at least, yeah.
15:09Anything just right as you jump in the door that you think,
15:12huh, that might not work for me?
15:14I mean, the living room, it's open,
15:16but it's like small in a way.
15:18I get what you mean.
15:18You kind of, you walk in and you're there.
15:20You're right here, yeah.
15:21Yeah, it was definitely open concept,
15:23but just a little bit too modern for me.
15:26It wasn't that warm, cozy feeling.
15:31All right.
15:32We have entered the kitchen.
15:34Big Island.
15:35Big Island.
15:36I love the live slab edge on the outside.
15:38The fact that you can just see everyone in front of you
15:41while you're cooking.
15:42It's a good layout.
15:43Everyone can see you when you're in here.
15:44And I love, like, right beside us,
15:46that super big, long live edge table.
15:48So again, you could fit all of our family on there
15:50for big dinners.
15:52I also love this stove.
15:53It's so big.
15:54This whole wall.
15:56I mean, this is a kitchen for someone who wants to use the kitchen.
15:58And to have the outdoor seating right off the kitchen,
16:01you're not necessarily running all the way back in.
16:03You're not going upstairs or anything to get from the barbecue.
16:06Just imagine when we're prepping food,
16:07you can see the lake go behind you.
16:09You can see the orchards.
16:10Like, that's kind of what we wanted.
16:12Wow.
16:12The view is amazing.
16:14We still have a lot to explore.
16:16Do you guys want to start with the primary?
16:18Meet back in, like, 510?
16:19Sure.
16:20All right.
16:20See you soon.
16:33The view is incredible.
16:35Wow.
16:36Floor to ceiling glass.
16:37Every morning waking up for that.
16:39Oh, that bathroom is pretty nice.
16:41I love that drop down rain shower.
16:43Yeah, the rain shower is pretty cool.
16:44The bathtub, how it's curved, that's pretty cool too.
16:47It's definitely, obviously, way more modern than the last two.
16:49Yeah, I think it's too modern for me, the feel.
16:53It's not as, like, warm country feel.
16:56Okay, let's go meet Jeff outside.
16:58Okay.
17:06Can you blame me for soaking up this view?
17:09Nope.
17:09I mean, it's pretty breathtaking.
17:12What did you think about the primary, first of all?
17:14Uh, definitely cool, like, very modern.
17:18Yeah.
17:18Um, I was thinking, like, it's not as that warm, cozy farmhouse feel that, uh, I was liking.
17:25I think it's like a trade-off, right?
17:26Like, this beautiful scenery, um, entertaining on this deck would be incredible.
17:31I know.
17:31Right?
17:31But the trade-off is it's more on a steeper bank.
17:34So for me, it would be a struggle.
17:36It'd be tougher to have animals up here as well, I think would be the other tougher thing.
17:40Well, uh, still, you don't have to make up your mind quite yet.
17:43But let's play the guessing game.
17:45So we've seen the first two houses, now we're into house number three.
17:47What do we think this one's listed for?
17:50Four million?
17:52Yeah, I was gonna say around four.
17:55Okay, so you obviously saw my notes.
17:57It's 3.995.
18:00Pretty much right on.
18:02I think because it's cheaper, to me, it doesn't take it right off the table right away.
18:06We could try and level out different parts of the property for farm animals.
18:09Yeah, I could see.
18:09Definitely, it's doable.
18:11So what do you say we take a little bit of time to think about it, we'll rendezvous back,
18:15and then we can kind of go over all three of them.
18:16Yeah, that works for me.
18:18All right.
18:18Yep.
18:19Let's get out of here.
18:32With the house tours out of the way, Stephen and Melissa are off to think about their decision.
18:36And in the meantime, I'm going to take full advantage of being in wine country
18:41by stopping off at Priest Creek Winery, where I'm talking to Jane about how this place stands out from the
18:47rest.
18:47Jane, I'm Jeff.
18:49Nice to meet you, Jeff.
18:49Such a pleasure to meet you, and thank you for having us.
18:51Now, Priest Creek Winery.
18:53I want to know everything about it.
18:54I've been to the Okanagan before, but I've never been here.
18:57Well, we are officially still Kelowna's newest winery.
18:59We just celebrated our four-year anniversary on the end of May.
19:02Our biggest claim to fame is bringing in big, bold reds to the southeast Kelowna bench,
19:06and we have 10 acres leased down south of the Oliver area to kind of differentiate our winery
19:10from the other wineries in the southeast Kelowna area.
19:12Our award-winning Gewürztraminer has definitely been one of our biggest hits.
19:17We've won double gold and gold every year since we've opened at various wine competitions with that one.
19:22I'm going to have to take some of that when I go home.
19:23Yeah.
19:24How did you get started in this?
19:26Well, kind of by happenstance.
19:27My husband and I both grew up on farms in Saskatchewan.
19:30Okay.
19:30So we bought the property primarily to raise our kids on some land.
19:33When we bought the property, we had to think long and hard as to what we wanted to do with
19:36it,
19:36and a winery kind of made sense with all of the beautiful mountain vistas around us.
19:40Well, I'm glad you did.
19:41Yeah.
19:41This is quite the spot.
19:43Yeah.
19:43Outside of obviously coming to the most beautiful winery I've ever seen,
19:47what do people do in the area? Why are people deciding to move here?
19:50I think it's a lifestyle change for most people.
19:52You get longer summer seasons. You've got hiking, you've got skiing, you've got mountain biking.
19:58Yeah, it's kind of like a 365-a-year playground.
20:01It really is. It doesn't matter what season you're in, there's always something to do.
20:05Should we go taste some wine?
20:06Perfect. Let's go.
20:07Should we head in?
20:08Sounds good.
20:08Thank you so much.
20:09This place is gorgeous. In fact, I think it'd be the perfect spot to reveal Stephen and Melissa's decision.
20:16So I've invited them here and told them to meet me in the vineyards so I can find out once
20:21and for all
20:22which house was their favorite.
20:26You already have wine waiting for me.
20:28Yes, we do.
20:29Should go house hunting more often.
20:31I feel like it's so hot out right now we're being interrogated, but honestly, this is a fun decision.
20:35We saw three incredible houses.
20:37House number one that we saw, great backyard, great pool. As you walk in, it kind of just felt
20:42more boxy and didn't have that same home feel that we're looking for.
20:47Not as open concept.
20:48Not as open yet.
20:49And I think the other one that is tough to wrestle with is the fact that we couldn't have farm
20:53animals
20:54or horses.
20:55It might be a little tricky to put them in that backyard.
20:57Our neighbors might not love us.
21:06It wouldn't, yeah.
21:07It's been a long driveway.
21:08Loved the feel, the rolling.
21:09Great country.
21:09Yeah, country, the rolling grass hills.
21:11Very homey, like just really nice.
21:13Aside from the fact that it's a big piece of property, it's a lot of work.
21:16I mean, is that something you think you might consider taking on?
21:19It could work.
21:20It could be fun work.
21:21It could be fun work.
21:21Until you do it, then you don't know.
21:23If everybody helps, you know, maybe.
21:24It's a team effort.
21:25Well, that's true.
21:26Four generations.
21:27Yeah.
21:28Then we moved on to house number three.
21:30It felt like kind of something from the future.
21:32The wow factor, as you open that main massive door and you're just like, holy.
21:36I do like that modern look.
21:38I liked the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
21:41I would say the topography was probably the biggest challenge there.
21:44To have animals to just maintain the property.
21:47That would be challenging, again, for someone like me with some limitations.
21:51So if you had to get rid of one.
21:54I would choose to get rid of number one just because it doesn't have enough property.
21:58We can have the animals, which is truly the reason why we wanted to move.
22:00Yeah.
22:01So it kind of defeats the purpose.
22:03So now it's down to two or three.
22:06Let's hear it.
22:07Yeah, let's hear it.
22:10I would choose house number two.
22:12House number two?
22:12Yeah.
22:13That seemed to check pretty much every box.
22:16I loved it.
22:17And honestly, just from the second we walked down that driveway,
22:19I could just, you know, picture exactly what you're looking for.
22:22The pool house and being able to entertain out there
22:24and to be able to tell our girls that they could have horses on their property,
22:27I think that, to me, is the biggest win of all.
22:29Oh, yeah.
22:30Well, I say we give the realtor a call.
22:33Yeah.
22:33Let's do it.
22:33Let's do it.
22:34No brainer.
22:34No brainer.
22:35As quick as possible because I really need to go for a swim.
22:38Cheers.
22:38Cheers.
22:38Cheers.
