00:00Hello, I'm Richard Gadd, and this is a day in the life behind the scenes on Half-Man, a new
00:04HBO show.
00:07It's about six in the morning, maybe even earlier. I've kind of lost track of time. I always lose track
00:11of time.
00:12I'm about to head into makeup first, then costume, then dance is set for the day where chaos will ensue.
00:20I've been stacking on the mask for this role.
00:24I've been, like, working out loads, like, six times a week.
00:27And then you get back after, like, the 12-hour shoot day or 11-hour shoot day or whatever, and
00:31then you're like, God, I also have to go to the gym now.
00:34I was 68.8 kilograms when I filmed Baby Ranger. I'm sitting now at about 95.
00:39My brain chemistry around food sort of altered because I lost so much weight to do Baby Ranger.
00:44Now my brain has this thing where it's like, oh, you eat something now. It's mildly sort of stimulating and
00:49carb-heavy.
00:49It's like, oh, more of that, please.
00:51This is my lean diet breakfast. Spinach and eggs, appetizing stuff.
00:57Seamlessly transitioning into the new costume. There's no real organization to what I do. Pretty chaotic.
01:05Oh, God, that's cold. All right, let's get inside.
01:08Never gets any less surreal when you write something and suddenly you're like, lights are getting rigged and all these
01:12people are working. It's crazy.
01:14How are you doing? You all right?
01:15Good, how are you?
01:16Yeah, I'm good. How are you?
01:17Good. Should I show you the two versions?
01:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, let's do it.
01:26Here's the process. So I go through notes on the scene. It's actually a miracle pen, this, because then you
01:31know which notes are your latest ones, because it's different colors.
01:34And if they reach the red, the actors are in a lot of trouble.
01:40So I do show runs, so I oversee the set, and then I'm obviously constantly writing, and then I'm acting.
01:46Today, you've called me on a day where I'm doing kind of all three.
01:49It's hard to switch the writing brain off, so I was trying to learn my lines for the next two
01:53days, and I kept thinking, oh, I could improve that.
01:54I was watching the monitor, and I was writing at the same time, and now I'm having to get in
01:59my head in the game for it, and I've got all these amazing essays here.
02:03There's a big old key scene where Nile walks in, sees Ruben sitting there on one of the pews.
02:08But yeah, it's intense. It kind of never stops. It really never stops.
02:12And there's not enough hours in the day, the most truest phrase ever said.
02:19It's been a good day. We've got some stuff done. We're getting through it.
02:22I got up at half three this morning. What's the time now? Like nine or something?
02:27So a long old working den, I got about an hour and a half home.
02:30Thank you so much for watching. That was a day in the life of On Half Man, the new HBO
02:33show.
02:34I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you enjoyed the show as well.
02:38All right?
