Warning: SPOILERS for the "Scrubs" revival’s premiere are ahead!

In the "Scrubs" Season 8 finale, which is generally considered to be the show’s true series finale given how polarizing Season 9 was (it was actually meant to be a separate spinoff), Zach Braff’s J.D. envisioned what his future might look like in the form of a film. That included him and Sarah Chalke’s Elliot getting married, having a child together and living happily ever after together. Well, sadly, that’s not how things shook out in real life.

The premiere of "Scrubs" Season 1 (the tenth season overall) on the 2026 TV schedule revealed that J.D. and Elliot are divorced and not on great terms with each other. What specifically led to their marriage collapsing remains a mystery, but needless to say this was one of the biggest twists to come out of "Scrubs’" positively-received return to TV. Show creator Bill Lawrence also acknowledged to CinemaBlend it was a “big decision” he and showrunner Aseem Batra reached given how it would impact that vision JD saw at the end of Season 8.

00:00This is fun to do because Asim and I, uh, argued about it, you know, and, uh, um, uh, cause,
00:06uh, uh, you know, JD and it was a big decision, but the end of eight, I, you know, what
00:12won me over was a, it was, uh, who's to say that all my dreams can't come true just this
00:18once.
00:18And I wrote that back in the finale of season eight. Cause that's how in my head, I would hope
00:24things. And I would tell you that my life's pretty good. I'm pretty lucky and grateful guy, but things didn't
00:30go exactly the way I wanted them to, you know, a, and B, when you look back at the show,
00:35if you watch every episode, Turk and Carla, you're like, those two are going to make it. And if you
00:38look back at JD and Elliot, you're like, those two never went more than an episode and a half without
00:43being a horrible couple, you know?
00:45And, uh, Asim, you know, um, I write, uh, I'm being careful here cause I don't know if you, I'm
00:50allowed to talk about your real life a little bit. So I write, uh, about, um, things that I know
00:55and have seen, you know, and, um, uh, Asim is, you know, is, uh, uh, a mother, uh, and, uh,
01:04uh, no longer with her former partner and people have to make that work. And it's interesting to see how
01:10that evolves into friendship and, and, and how you co-parent and, uh, uh,
01:15So for me, um, it was kind of a really interesting storytelling to do. And we went into it knowing
01:20some people would be like, oh, and upset, but hopefully, you know, that's usually a good sign that the story
01:27is going to be interesting.
