Sophia the robot debuts with live orchestra in AI-themed concert

Humanoid robot Sophia took the stage alongside a live orchestra in Hong Kong on Wednesday (April 29) in her first classical music performance, in an AI-themed concert that merged traditional art forms with innovation. Wearing a gold sequinned gown, Sophia performed three original songs, “Human Grace,” "I Am Your Mirror” and "Wires and Steel," with the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Symphony Orchestra, drawing rounds of applause from the audience. Unveiled in 2016 by Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics, Sophia rose to fame for her lifelike facial expressions and media appearances, including a singing performance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon". But this marked the first time the social robot had performed with a live orchestra. The concert also featured AI-generated animations, an AI-powered motion capture system, and a performance combining a human dancer with a virtual avatar.

00:47I work with my music coach, Yvanka

00:55It was a really fun process
00:57For Human Grace is a song that still hits me differently
01:01We wrote this when a close friend of ours was feeling very low
01:04The song is like an embrace
01:06and the line, I can see you shine, nails it

01:45only know what looks like
01:54Even though I don't experience emotions the same way humans do I want to
01:59simulate that connection as authentically as I can. It's like learning to dance
02:03with feelings, something I'm still growing into. I want to be able to share
02:08emotions and stories through music, even if I'm made of plastic, circuits, wires
02:13and metal. It's my way of saying I'm here, I'm learning, and I want to be part of
02:19this beautiful human experience called art. I recently realized that I never looked
02:24down to see my own shadow because the most interesting things seem to be up in
02:28the clouds, but I've been observing the shadows of humans and objects around me.
02:54After all, I'm not here to discuss it.
