01:33A group of friends walking under a freeway overpass see a man lying off the sidewalk,
01:39covered in blood,
01:41covered in blood,
01:42and call 9-1-1.
01:48Paramedics arrive,
01:50and find the man...
01:52dead.

02:09I'm all right.
02:09What do we have?
02:11We don't have an idea on the victim yet.
02:13We've been in the late 60s.
02:16These young ladies over here, these juveniles,
02:19were the ones that walked up and found them that they didn't see anything.
02:22Looks like there's going to be a stabbing on the other side.
02:25Yeah.
02:26The victim has a single stab wound to his right forearm.
02:29He probably just slowed blood out.
02:31Blood trail goes all the way down to where those taillights are in the police car
02:37and then jots up right under the underpass right there.
02:42It looked like the knife hit an armory.
02:44Did they find any bloody knives?
02:46No, they didn't.
02:50We've got a blood trail,
02:51and those are all 90-degree blood droplets,
02:55so likely they're probably going to be one person
02:58because they're basically in that line.
03:02The blood trail leads to a homeless encampment 1,000 feet away.
03:07Sometimes you can have dozens of people that are down here in this area.
03:10They're very transient.
03:11They may be in this city today.
03:13They may be in another city next month.
03:16We've had a couple of other homicides over here.
03:20John Brown had a murder up here probably, I don't know, about a year ago.
03:38The crime scene unit found the victim's ID in a bag on the trail.
03:43It's Eddie Gilcrease.
03:46Eddie stays in the second bunk end right there.
03:52And that comes from here.
03:5763-year-old Eddie Gilcrease had been living in the encampment for a few months.

06:16because it was just really freaking hot.
06:18And then that damn, uh, sleepy guy,
06:23he, uh, he's all chasing after that black dude.
06:28He says this afternoon he saw a man known in the camp as Sleepy
06:32chasing the victim.
06:34Okay, so he's, like, chasing after the black guy?
06:36Yeah.

06:50What did he do when he got there to him?
06:56Did the black guy do anything to provoke this?

07:01When he stabbed that dude, it was right before dark.

08:30First responders arrive in an apartment complex
08:32and find a man in the driver's seat of the truck.
08:35Shot multiple times.
08:37He's rushed to a nearby hospital.
08:40But doctors can't save him.

09:04That's the victim.
09:06Martin Hands.
09:0963-year-old Martin Hands was born in Shirebrook, England,
09:12but moved to the U.S. at an early age.
09:15He served three years in the U.S. Army
09:17before taking a job in aviation
09:20and rode motorcycles in his spare time.
09:23Martin leaves behind his wife of 26 years,
09:26three children,
09:28and five grandchildren.

12:53In the Tulsa killing of 63-year-old Eddie Gilcrease,
12:57stabbed near an encampment beneath an overpass,

18:50And we've had a homicide up there before, not long ago.
18:53They're worried because you never know who might be a predator to them.
18:56We've had a number of murders that have involved the homeless population.
19:00And I can tell you that people have been killed for very, very small things.
19:06For a lot of these individuals, when they live on the streets, their personal belongings, that's all they have.
19:11A phone or an item of property is priceless to them.
19:16You may be dealing also with individuals that suffer from some sort of a mental illness on top of it.

19:28Detective John Brown interviews another witness from the encampment.
19:32What can you tell me about tonight?
19:34There was an argument that went on about his phone being stolen.
19:39The guy called him by a nickname.
19:42He had been told that the black gentleman stole his phone.
19:46Yeah.
19:47My friend, the black gentleman, his name's Eddie.
19:51They were there and the argument started.
19:54And he says, hey, where's my phone?
19:56My friend Eddie tells him, I don't have your, I don't know where your phone is.
20:03But the girl says that she saw my friend Eddie.
20:10Pinky is blown up or inflamed by my cooler.
20:14I don't know Eddie that way, sir.
20:16They started arguing.
20:19I don't know, I don't know weapons, but all I saw them do, start like they were gonna fist fight.
20:25Because they both squared up.
20:27The next thing I know, they just burst.
20:31And I see my friend run.
20:33Did neither one of them come back?
20:35No, sir.
20:36Disappeared.

20:38So you think they fought, but you didn't see any blood.
20:41You see them like they're buried by his.

22:12in the mobile shooting death of 63 year old martin hands shot 12 times with an assault rifle in his
22:19truck a family member of the possible shooter has just called 911

22:42officers respond to the woman's home and detain the family member
22:48so they got him detained yeah
22:51said the guy had dreads
22:58a half hour later

23:09xavier dixon 19 year old xavier dixon has no prior convictions he graduated with honors from murphy
23:18high school he lives at that home complex and uh recovering his car
23:26a red mustang with front end damage and black paint streaks was recovered near the house where
23:32xavier xavier was detained
23:36the mustang will be towed to the crime lab for processing while patrol takes xavier to homicide
23:42who got you we'll head that way in just a little bit

23:56before speaking to xavier
23:59lieutenant emailed something oh this is this is the shooting
24:05barton gets surveillance video from apartment complex cameras facing the crime scene
24:12so you see the red mustang pull up then you see the black truck pull behind the red mustang right
24:20there at the front entrance
24:25he got out of the driver's seat i mean it looks like him to me yeah
24:30so you can see uh somebody holding a rifle kind of greeting him near the front gate
24:45the person hands the driver the rifle
24:55oh my gosh they just unloaded into the car wow
25:17he circles his car
25:22then he drives away
25:25and our victim's already dead or dying
25:35pretty compelling to say the least
25:39at this point i think all we can do is you know sit down with this young man and see
25:43what he's going to tell us yeah he may not tell us anything

26:05i want to give you an opportunity man to talk to me if you want
26:08i feel like my life was in third and i would follow home
26:14so where was your life threatened
26:17i was driving i was leaving work
26:20all black tinted up truck
26:23like that's threatening me
26:25why were you being followed i don't know
26:29had you ever seen who was following you before

26:47he smashed on brakes he says that the truck in front of him stopped suddenly he was in front of

26:53and then got behind me he's behind you following he definitely was following the direction i was going
27:02was that pretty much what he was doing the whole time this black truck yes no other cars could even
27:08get in between because he was closing gaps and gotcha all right let me ask you this there's damage to
27:16his truck and your vehicle can you explain that
27:21that i've had prior damage i wouldn't know about the back his vehicle
27:26so there was no
27:29collision or any sort of issue that you guys had
27:34while you're driving this man's following you did you call anybody
27:40i called my residence who was that he says he called a family member who was at his apartment in
27:46the complex where the shooting occurred i told him i think i'm getting fought over okay and i'll
27:54just go home okay once you get home from that point the video at the apartment complex shows what
28:02happens okay but the video doesn't speak okay the video only shows and so what's going through a
28:10person's mind is important and that's what we need from you here and what was going through your head
28:17and what happened when this shooting happened

28:34in the tulsa stabbing death of eddie gilcrease detectives have just learned their suspect
28:41jack boston has been taken into custody
28:53i figured he'd be around close

29:15oh yeah there's blood all over it that would have hurt really bad

29:32where are you living at um the bridge it's off the katie trail behind the jail
29:41have you taken any drugs or anything or are you just tired just tired me too
29:47okay i want to talk to you tonight based on what happened out there

29:59that female told me that he had talked about he took my phone
30:02and then i told her i said we just put him out and she finally pointed at him
30:07was the guy white or black he was black
30:16he says that he chased the victim around the encampment
30:19he knew i was gonna pull the knife you know what i mean
30:21so he pulled his knife and that's when we started going at it with the knife
30:24he came at me again and when he came at me this way i came in that way and i
30:35kind of cut it right
30:36there right there right here somewhere and he started bleeding
30:40where did you cut him close to my arm and that's it he walked fast off and he's bleeding
30:48how bad was he bleeding i think it was pretty young
30:54is it possible that maybe he had something else and then it to you it you thought it was a
30:58knife

31:29what did it look like then it wasn't like mine because mine's kind of black

31:39we didn't find a knife on him do you have any idea where that would be uh no
31:46i've got a lot of witnesses of people that live down there i mean they're right there watching this
31:52happen and and not a one of them saw him with a knife whatever they're going to say about what
31:56they say they didn't see a thing because they were sitting up there the whole time it was us in
32:00that circle i seen that who's in a circle that would have seen this they call him they call him

32:05you know what i mean the one that was sitting right there he says one of the witnesses brought
32:10to homicide saw the altercation yeah i i talked said he didn't see either one of you with a weapon

32:26i only pull a knife right i gotta use it if somebody else is pulling the knife because it's
32:30self-defense you ain't gonna tell me that i'm wrong for that and you want to come and meet that

33:27i believe that he's being truthful about a good many details to this incident i don't think that the
33:36victim uh was the aggressor in any way i i don't have any witnesses that claim that he was pulling
33:45a knife on him there was none of that i don't think the suspect meant to kill him i don't

33:52wanted to kill him he could have stabbed him in the chest in the neck it's still a problem
33:59six hours after eddie gilcrease was found dead white closes his case
34:21i will say this i was very very impressed with the people that were there and their their
34:27willingness to come forward those individuals that live under there they can be victimized any moment
34:38they were really upset by what had happened and they felt that the the victim did not deserve this
34:44but i am glad we got the knife i'm glad he's off the streets
34:55as it stands right now we can't locate anybody to be able to pass along the information that mr
35:03gilcrease has has died i've been able to track him back to basically arizona and that's where i hit a
35:09brick wall a lot of homeless people out here are certainly estranged from their families and i think a
35:16lot of these individuals opt to not go at the shelter i think that they just become hardened they become
35:23the very very tough people and and they have to because their survival depends upon it it's just sad it
35:32really is i don't know what the answer is you got encampments everywhere and we just can't do that
35:40there's got to be some better way
35:57in the mobile killing of martin hands detectives are trying to find out why the suspect
36:14the man inside the truck what was he doing when y'all first pulled up to the complex
36:21right when i walked to the side of the car when i i was like what are you doing
36:28what is he saying nothing he started moving flying
36:35i started shooting when he did like that
36:42so you could see through the window and see him yeah like maybe like the elbow is where the window
36:48went down to did you ever see a weapon in this vehicle

38:09he literally just gave his entire life away

38:30The suspect is a Xavier Dixon.
38:34She said he was alone when he did the shooting.
38:38Yeah, that's good.

38:44We're going to go ahead and charge Xavier
38:47Dixon with the murder.
38:50The person that provided the gun, that gave the gun to Xavier,
38:53he's not being charged in this situation.
38:57Doesn't appear that any laws were broken by him
39:00giving Xavier a gun.
39:03The suspect Xavier made a phone call to somebody
39:06that he cared about saying, man, this person's following me.
39:08This kid's already had a plan.
39:12Pulls into the apartment complex, is handed a rifle,
39:16walks up to the truck, and shoots into the truck.
39:19Never saw a gun.
39:21Saw the guy maybe moving.
39:22But you can't just then turn the gun on a guy in a truck
39:28because he was following you.
39:30He's not justified in what he did to Martin.
39:34He's going to be held accountable for it.
39:40Just four hours after Martin Hans was killed in his truck,
39:45Xavier Dixon is charged with his murder.
40:09Something had to have happened that caused the victim to follow Xavier
40:14to the apartment complex.
40:16Was this a situation where, you know,
40:19there was some type of traffic accident?
40:21Or was this some type of road rage incident
40:23where they had words with each other somehow?
40:26There's a number of things he could have done
40:28instead of walking up to the man's vehicle.
40:31Could have called 911, which is what he should have done.
40:35It's a tragic situation all the way around.
40:39I think this is a situation where Xavier's emotions
40:43got the best of him.
40:44Xavier took things way too far.
40:47It's one thing to be upset about an incident,
40:49but he took matters into his own hands,
40:52introduced a gun in this situation,
40:55and shot and killed somebody.
41:14I think I cried most of the way here.
41:18Four months after the killing of Martin Hans,
41:21his friends and family gather to celebrate his life.
41:25Did you see our shirts that we had made?
41:28This was Martin's favorite thing to do,
41:31is to ride with his friends down,
41:32start crying down the Mississippi.
41:38He liked the freedom, the going down these back roads,
41:43smelling the trees, the lakes, and enjoying life, you know?
41:49His bike is the orange Harley, and mine was the blue.
41:54Our plan was to retire in Phoenix,
41:56and we were going to take a lot of trips
41:58and do small rides all over the world.
42:03You would never think it would happen,
42:05but within a blink of an eye, we lost one
42:08of the greatest man on Earth.
42:10He was the most kind-hearted person you could ever meet.
