00:06the parents of Robert Wiles said tonight this has been a horrifying experience the Toledo
00:12native disappeared in April of 2008 he was last seen in Lakeland Florida the Wiles family received
00:18a ransom demand a few days after Robert disappeared if you hope to see him again
00:23you must follow our instructions without deviation it was a multi-million dollar company they did work
00:30all over the world you want to get the attention of a king kidnap a prince my parents were ready
00:36and willing to give them everything they wanted I mean we all were this was just something that
00:43none of us has seen before no one is doing what they said they would do you just wait and
00:49you
00:49help and you pray where is this kid what happened to Rob in homicide the victim is already gone
00:59they're deceased a kidnapping has an added dynamic as far as you can tell the victim is still alive
01:10your mission is to keep that from changing I spent my career closing murder cases
01:22but I'm not the only one who answered the call it takes a rare breed to solve the unsolvable
01:31to catch a ruthless killer to find justice for the dead that's what it takes to be an American detective
01:53Tom Wiles is the owner of National Flight Services a multi-million dollar company that services
02:00private jets Tom checks his email when he sees this email it's titled Robert and he thinks that's quite
02:11odd he has a son named Robert he's 26 years old so he reads it and it opens with we
02:18have a Robert
02:22if you hope to see him again you must follow our instructions without deviation I was scared
02:31the demand he pays 750 000 for the safe return of Robert and he has to do so within five
02:40days
02:41any attempt to contact the authorities and we will take your son's life inside group x
02:51oh my god oh my god I did not think it was a joke I was scared of it enough
03:00that I know it called Pam
03:02right away he says somebody somebody took Robert
03:08it's like what it's like this wave just comes over your whole body and just takes
03:14your energy just out of you
03:20I didn't know if we were going to get Robert back
03:24the uncertainty is
03:28it's horrifying
03:31almost every ransom note ever written contains the phrase do not contact the authorities
03:36the reality is if you receive such a communication
03:41call the police
03:48my name is Dan Kelly I started with the FBI in 1990
03:55I specialized in white collar crime you have things like bank fraud you have civil rights violations
04:02public corruption it's a very important and a very busy area of investigation for the bureau
04:09I had not been assigned as a case agent on a kidnapping investigation previously
04:17this was just something that none of us had essentially seen before in 20 years experience on the job
04:28so what we want to do is find out what can we learn about Robert Wiles
04:33who exactly is Robert and why is it that this is happening obviously we use Tom Wiles the father is
04:42a great resource
04:47Tom is the owner and CEO of National Flight Services
04:51they serviced private aircraft and mostly engine repair that's where the money was but they would also do upholstery painting
04:59whatever the aircraft needed
05:03it was a multi-million dollar company and they did work all over the world and traveled all over the
05:10world
05:11so the kidnappers also know that Roberts is the son of a wealthy family
05:18you want to get the attention of a king?
05:20kidnap a prince
05:24right across from me is my father Tom Wiles
05:28Tom Wiles tells the FBI that Robert is employed by him
05:32they operate in different locations and different cities but they talk on the phone all the time
05:38Tom worked out of Toledo, Ohio
05:41Robert was at National Flight Services in Lakeland, Florida
05:46Robert was Tom's only son
05:48I mean obviously he was going to be the heir apparent to National Flight Services
05:53but Tom wanted him to learn the business from the ground up
05:57I wanted Robert to really learn all the aspects of a company
06:03what the company did and what customers wanted us to do
06:08and Robert was very good at that
06:14when Robert was assigned to go to Lakeland, Florida
06:17he was promoted to the position of business development manager
06:21his job was to attract new customers to the business
06:25and also to make current customers happy
06:28Robert, you know, he loved working
06:31what was important to him was doing the job right
06:35integrity was really important in our family
06:41after learning this information
06:43there is a lot of legwork to be done
06:46at this point in time we have no information relative to anyone else
06:50where is this kid
06:55the last time that Robert was seen at National Flight
06:59was approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1st, 2008
07:06it is now April the 3rd
07:08and his truck is still there
07:11but he is not
07:13so the FBI sends other agents
07:16to his apartment
07:21nothing is out of place
07:22no evidence of a struggle
07:24nothing broken
07:25so it is a mystery
07:27he has disappeared into thin air
07:32so the kidnappers
07:34want $750,000
07:38the note says that the group X people
07:41or person
07:42is willing to kill Robert
07:43if they don't get what they want
07:45you have to believe that's true
07:46the note demands this occurs
07:49by April 8th
07:50it's already April 4th
07:52they've only got four days
07:57you're terrified
07:58you don't know what's happening
07:59you don't know where your brother is
08:00I know my parents were ready and willing to give them everything they wanted
08:04I mean we all were
08:06give them what they want
08:09my soul thought is
08:10you get Robert back
08:13and we had the money
08:16however the consensus was
08:17that Tom should not pay the actual ransom monies
08:21even if you were to pay those monies
08:23there's just no guarantee
08:25that Tom is ever going to see his son again
08:28and the FBI says
08:29let us deal with this
08:30and we will recover your son
08:32by capturing the people that have him
08:35we didn't know what to think
08:36you just trust them
08:38and if they ask you to do something
08:39you do it
08:40you have faith in them
08:43so the first step in getting Robert back
08:45is to determine
08:46who is holding him captive
08:49who is it that's demanding $750,000
08:54you obviously always have to consider
08:57individuals that are close
08:59to the actual victim
09:01and one of the things that kind of brought our attention
09:05was the fact that
09:06Tom was going through a very difficult time
09:08with his wife Pam Wiles
09:12Tom and I separated in 2006
09:14we sold our house in Melbourne
09:16I told him that I would like to have
09:19whatever the value of that house is
09:22to put away in a savings
09:24and he said all right
09:25he gave me that money
09:28and that amount was $750,000
09:32well my my my
09:33there's someone else that says
09:35they want $750,000
09:38Agent Kelly then learns
09:40that National Flight Services
09:42has kidnapping and ransom insurance
09:44on the senior employees of the company
09:47to include Robert Wiles
09:49so this loss of $750,000
09:53that has been paid to the wife
09:55could be reclaimed from the insurance company
09:57as a ransom payment
09:59so logically
10:01is there any connection
10:03does Tom Wiles have some things to explain
10:07oh yes he does
10:14the FBI is deeply into the case
10:17of the disappearance of Robert Wiles
10:21could this kidnapping be an invention
10:24arranged by Tom Wiles
10:25for the sheer purpose of collecting money
10:31so bring Tom Wiles back in
10:33for a confrontive interview
10:37Tom Wiles gave all appearances
10:40of genuine grief
10:42and agony
10:43over the fact that his son was missing
10:46but we have to attempt
10:47to get to the bottom of this
10:50there is no pleasantness
10:52about police investigation
10:53and if your feelings get hurt by that
10:56well that's too bad
11:00I was cooperative
11:01they wanted to know what I knew
11:03we asked him about
11:06the kidnapping insurance
11:07he said his employees
11:09traveled to foreign countries
11:10business executives
11:12and business employees
11:13can be kidnapped in these countries
11:14and exorbitant dollar amount demands
11:18can be made
11:19for their safe return
11:21that's why Tom Wiles
11:23took out kidnapping insurance
11:25all right
11:26that's a reasonable enough explanation
11:28during the interview
11:30Tom Wiles
11:31clearly establishes
11:32during this time frame
11:34that he is in Toledo
11:35Ohio
11:36and further
11:38we had no emails
11:39we had no phone calls
11:40to indicate
11:41that he might be
11:42orchestrating this
11:43with anyone else
11:44behind the scenes
11:48Tom Wiles
11:49had nothing to do
11:50with his kidnapping
11:51it's for real
11:56for a few days
11:57nothing has been heard
11:59from Robert
11:59or the kidnappers
12:01and the critical date
12:02of April the 8th
12:03is fast approaching
12:04the ransom note
12:07indicated
12:08that $750,000
12:10were to be placed
12:11on Robert Wiles'
12:13desktop
12:15so
12:16what ultimately
12:17was decided
12:18was
12:18that we would
12:19take
12:20coffee grounds
12:21of an appropriate
12:22wait
12:22for $750,000
12:24in cash
12:25and we would
12:26place the coffee grounds
12:28inside the box
12:29so the simple plan
12:31is that when
12:32that person arrives
12:33to claim the money
12:34they're going to be arrested
12:38Robert's abduction
12:39has been kept
12:40a secret
12:41from all
12:41NFS employees
12:43no one knows
12:44but due to the nature
12:46of the ransom note
12:47indicating
12:48that the money
12:49is needed
12:49to be placed
12:50in Robert
12:50Wiles' office
12:51we needed
12:52a trusted confidant
12:55that Tom
12:56could place us with
12:58the individual
12:59that Tom Wiles
13:00provided
13:01to do that
13:02was Toby Holt
13:03the operations manager
13:05at National Flight Services
13:06Toby was running
13:08the facility
13:09in Lakeland
13:12Wiles
13:13trusts him
13:13explicitly
13:18so what we decide
13:19to do
13:20is get cameras
13:21into Robert
13:22Wiles' office
13:25we have to set up
13:26a VHS tape recorder
13:27and where do we set that?
13:29right next door
13:29Toby Holt's office
13:31has
13:32the VHS recorder
13:36the day of the money drop
13:38finally arrives
13:39an FBI agent
13:40takes the box
13:41casually goes
13:43into Robert's office
13:44sits on the desk
13:45and closes the door
13:46returns to Toby's office
13:48and he and the FBI
13:50arrest team
13:51watch and wait
13:59we had Tampa SWAT
14:01come into
14:02National Flight Services
14:03they were hidden
14:04they were staking out
14:06the money
14:06you know
14:07in case somebody
14:07did come try to
14:08retrieve it
14:09out of Robert's office
14:11the trap
14:12is set
14:15all of our
14:17ducks are in a row
14:18as far
14:19as we're concerned
14:20and you always
14:22hold out
14:22a little bit of hope
14:23that there was
14:24going to be a pickup
14:24of these monies
14:26but that date
14:27comes and goes
14:28nothing is heard
14:29again
14:30from the kidnappers
14:31Robert
14:32never reappears
14:33and the money
14:34is never claimed
14:37agent Kelly
14:38is struck
14:39by the weirdness
14:40of this investigation
14:41nothing
14:42is matching up
14:44with anything
14:44he's ever experienced
14:49nobody picked it up
14:51why
14:52what happened
14:54you know
14:55what went wrong
14:55the whole thing
14:56was strange
14:57the uncertainty
14:58is real hard
14:59to learn to live with
15:01you just wait
15:02and you hope
15:03and you pray
15:04you get these
15:05thoughts in your mind
15:06of
15:07is he scared
15:08like
15:08is he
15:10somebody like
15:11hurting him
15:11and like
15:11you have to push
15:12those thoughts
15:13out of your head
15:15it was terrible
15:16it was a terrible time
15:20so at that particular
15:21point in time
15:22there's a bit of a shift
15:24in the mentality
15:24of the investigators
15:25to open the investigation
15:27up
15:28and start soliciting
15:30the public's
15:31assistance
15:32in this matter
15:33the parents
15:34of Robert Wiles
15:36said tonight
15:36this has been
15:37a horrifying experience
15:38the Toledo native
15:39disappeared in April
15:41he was last seen
15:42in Lakeland, Florida
15:43you gonna throw them
15:44all back in?
15:45yeah
15:47Robert was born
15:48in 1980
15:51he was a happy kid
15:54he went to
15:55Florida Air Academy
15:56for high school
15:57and then he went on
15:58to Bowling Green University
16:00and he was in
16:01the ROTC program
16:03for the Air Force
16:04and he did great
16:07Robert and I
16:08did a lot of
16:08fishing together
16:10we did a lot
16:11of boating
16:12together
16:13and he loved
16:14to be
16:15on the water
16:17Rob was
16:18extremely compassionate
16:19but yet knew
16:21how to
16:21have fun
16:23my name is
16:24Robert Wiles
16:25and I'm from
16:25Toledo, Ohio
16:27he had this way
16:28of speaking
16:29to people
16:29that kind of
16:31had them
16:31kind of
16:31bring their guard
16:32down a little bit
16:33and people
16:34just were drawn
16:35to him
16:36he was just
16:37that guy
16:37I loved being
16:38around him
16:39I've got a lot
16:39of good memories
16:44in homicide
16:45the victim
16:45is already gone
16:47they're deceased
16:48the kidnapping
16:50has an added
16:50dynamic
16:51as far as
16:52you can tell
16:53the victim
16:54is still alive
16:55your mission
16:56is to keep
16:57that from changing
16:58so now the question
16:59is where is he
17:01as part of
17:03the FBI's
17:04investigation
17:05into the kidnapping
17:06we deployed
17:07its evidence
17:09response team
17:10to the scene
17:11of national
17:11flight services
17:13it would be
17:14very important
17:15indeed
17:15if they could
17:16find a crime scene
17:17his vehicle
17:19is still parked
17:20in the lot
17:21that indicates
17:22he never left
17:23the place
17:23so the first thing
17:24to attack
17:25is the building
17:26we had agents
17:28and support people
17:29who are trained
17:29in evidence recovery
17:30basically combed
17:32over the entire
17:33hangar
17:35numerous
17:35individuals
17:37conducted a thorough
17:39search of
17:40Robert's office
17:41the entire
17:43upstairs office area
17:45and there was
17:45nothing that they
17:46found
17:47blood
17:47any kind of hair
17:49any kind of body
17:50fluids
17:51that would indicate
17:52that a murder
17:53happened
17:54inside that building
17:57he has disappeared
17:58from the face
17:59of the earth
17:59gone
18:01so we decided
18:03to interview
18:03national flight
18:04service employees
18:08now
18:09the money drop
18:10wasn't an open area
18:11it was in the office
18:12which
18:12to us
18:13made no sense
18:14the building
18:16itself
18:17there's security
18:18inside
18:18the alarms are set
18:20doors are locked
18:21if you don't have
18:23you know
18:24the key code
18:25or the card
18:25to get in
18:26it would be
18:26very difficult
18:27leading them
18:28to conclude
18:29it appears
18:30to be an inside job
18:33but criminal
18:34background checks
18:35are run
18:35on all of these
18:36national flight
18:37employees
18:37and these records
18:39are clean
18:40so there's
18:41really nothing
18:42that is gained
18:44to solve this case
18:45from the interviews
18:46of the national flight
18:46employees
18:50the investigation
18:51is starting
18:52to get very cold
18:53no further contact
18:54from the perpetrators
18:55Robert remains
18:57in the cosmos
18:57and no evidence
18:58can be found
18:59connecting any
19:00particular person
19:01to the crime
19:02and then finally
19:04they get a break
19:05a man who does
19:06business with
19:07national flight services
19:08comes forward
19:09and says he has a tip
19:10about a possible
19:11suspect
19:13an individual
19:14by the name
19:14of steve lindsey
19:15was brought
19:16to our attention
19:19steve lindsey
19:20was a mechanic
19:21that worked
19:22at national flight
19:23services
19:23for a while
19:24we found
19:25there was a history
19:26with steve lindsey
19:27and tom wiles
19:29the fbi learned
19:31there was
19:31a comment
19:33made that
19:34steve lindsey
19:35if he had
19:35the opportunity
19:36would break
19:37a wooden chair
19:38over tom wiles'
19:40back
19:40gather up
19:41these splinters
19:42and basically
19:43shoot tom wiles
19:44with the brief
19:45loaded splinters
19:48now that's
19:49a pretty good line
19:52did he mean it
19:53we need to find out
19:58fbi agents
19:59have been made
20:00aware of a
20:00former employee
20:01named steve lindsey
20:03who had been
20:04making threats
20:05against tom wiles
20:06robert's father
20:08that is
20:09serious
20:10and it's
20:11serious enough
20:11for the fbi
20:12to take a look at
20:13and do a thorough
20:14examination
20:14of steve lindsey
20:21the fbi learned
20:23that steve lindsey
20:24was exceptionally
20:25good
20:26at his job
20:27steve lindsey
20:29had a superior
20:30knowledge
20:31of the tpe
20:32331 engine
20:36the problem
20:37was
20:37he had had
20:38some issues
20:39with a national
20:41flight services
20:42vehicle
20:42while drinking
20:46i remember
20:47having a
20:47discussion
20:48with steve
20:50saying he had
20:51to quit drinking
20:51or we're going
20:53to have him
20:54doing any work
20:55for us
20:56tom had given
20:57him chance
20:58after chance
20:59after chance
20:59tom eventually
21:00fired him
21:02steve begged
21:03for his job
21:04back
21:04and tom had
21:05said i'm not
21:06hiring you back
21:07and he really
21:08got upset
21:08at tom
21:10there was
21:11tension
21:11and outright
21:13anger
21:13and angry
21:14people
21:15are dangerous
21:19so
21:20the bureau
21:21has to take
21:21a look
21:22at steve lindsey
21:23and say
21:24could he be
21:25perpetrating
21:25the scheme
21:26of the
21:26kidnapping
21:26of robert
21:27wilds
21:27to severely
21:29strike back
21:29at tom
21:30wilds
21:33all the
21:33all the agents
21:34believed
21:34it was an
21:35inside job
21:36because of
21:36the security
21:37of a jet
21:38maintenance
21:39facility
21:39but steve lindsey
21:41probably still
21:42has the
21:42access codes
21:43and maybe
21:44even the
21:45keys
21:48so he
21:48fits the
21:49bill
21:53so we
21:54are able
21:54to conduct
21:55an interview
21:56with steve lindsey
21:57when they
21:58ask him
21:59about his
21:59relationship
22:00with tom
22:00wilds
22:01he's not
22:01the least
22:02bit shy
22:03he hates
22:04tom wilds
22:05he admits
22:06to wanting
22:06to hurt
22:07him
22:08but
22:08lindsey
22:09was adamant
22:10that he
22:11had no
22:11involvement
22:12he said
22:13tom's
22:13one that
22:14had
22:14fired him
22:15and
22:16he wasn't
22:18really upset
22:18with robert
22:20he comes
22:21across
22:21as believable
22:22but
22:22everybody says
22:23they didn't
22:24do it
22:24we still
22:25need more
22:27the investigators
22:29looked at
22:29all of his
22:29text messages
22:30and although
22:32steve was
22:32a brilliant
22:33mechanic
22:33he was a
22:34very
22:35unsophisticated
22:36individual
22:37he wasn't
22:38very good
22:38at punctuation
22:39word syntax
22:41and he didn't
22:42have that level
22:43of sophistication
22:44that the
22:45ransom note
22:46would demand
22:48ultimately
22:49steve lindsey
22:50had to be
22:50eliminated
22:51as a subject
22:53so they've
22:54exhausted
22:54all leads
22:55and robert
22:56is still
22:56missing
22:56but so
22:57is his
22:58cell phone
22:59as we
23:00know
23:00our cell
23:01phones are
23:02connected
23:02to us
23:03at the
23:03hip
23:03today
23:04and even
23:05back in
23:052008
23:07so what
23:08we did
23:09is we
23:10obtained
23:10his cellular
23:11telephone records
23:12we can see
23:15we can see
23:42like he's
23:42like he's traveling
23:43a toll road
23:44well now you got
23:45tollbooths
23:46involved
23:47there's three tollbooths
23:48out there
23:49on the polk parkway
23:50and they each take
23:51pictures of every car
23:52that passes through
23:53so what do we do
23:54we file a subpoena
23:56with the florida department
23:57of transportation
23:58to obtain all of the video
24:00footage
24:00of the turnpike tollbooths
24:04we get
24:05we get
24:06tom wiles
24:06in
24:08tom wiles
24:09looks to see
24:11if there's any
24:11vehicles that
24:12he may recognize
24:13coming through
24:14the tollbooth
24:14they're assuming
24:15that this is an
24:16inside job
24:17and maybe
24:18the car
24:18is a car
24:19that tom
24:20will recognize
24:21as being
24:22one of his
24:22associates
24:23or employees
24:24or even
24:25a friend
24:27i just remember
24:29cars coming
24:30through the toll group
24:31on the lakeland
24:33freeway
24:34it took a long time
24:35to watch it
24:37polk parkway
24:38is a very busy place
24:39and hundreds of cars
24:40go through those booths
24:43call it what you will
24:44and a one in a million
24:45shot
24:45by tom wiles
24:48so he's watching
24:49this seemingly
24:50endless video
24:51and suddenly
24:51he says
24:52stop the tape
24:52and he focuses
24:54on this car
24:55it's a bmw
24:57convertible
24:59and he says
25:00i know that car
25:02at first
25:03i just think
25:03it was possible
25:05lo and behold
25:07he picks out
25:08a silver bmw
25:09of his operations
25:10manager
25:11toby holt
25:14well i'll be damned
25:21tom wiles
25:23has identified
25:24toby holt's car
25:25passing through
25:26a toll booth
25:27on the polk
25:27parkway
25:28at the same time
25:30that robert wiles'
25:31cell phone
25:32is pinging off
25:32a tower
25:33at that location
25:34and that just
25:37becomes a powder keg
25:38moment in this
25:39investigation
25:42ironically
25:43who does tom wiles
25:44supply us
25:45as a trusted confidant
25:47toby holt
25:48the operations manager
25:49at national flight
25:51services
25:54when things start
25:55to come together
25:56and the pieces
25:56of the puzzle
25:57start to fit
25:58you can feel it
26:01after that
26:02i had come to
26:03the conclusion
26:04that toby was
26:05a stake
26:06not only
26:07did he move
26:08from witness
26:09to subject
26:09he became
26:10a target
26:11in this investigation
26:14so now
26:15we are getting
26:16subpoena
26:17for the cellular
26:18telephone records
26:19of toby holt
26:20we compare it
26:22to the cell
26:23records
26:23of the victim
26:24robert wiles
26:25and we see
26:26an exact
26:27same
26:28route
26:29that these
26:30two phones
26:31are traveling
26:32on thursday
26:33april 3rd
26:342008
26:36two days
26:37after he disappeared
26:39that is a damning
26:41piece of evidence
26:42his bones tell him
26:43holt's the guy
26:47i place a phone call
26:48to toby holt
26:49and i ask toby
26:50if he can come
26:51to our office
26:52for additional interview
26:53readily agrees
26:56so they start
26:57by asking
26:58toby his whereabouts
26:59on the day
27:00that robert
27:00disappeared
27:01toby holt
27:02advises us
27:04on tuesday
27:06april the 1st
27:07he sees
27:07robert
27:08between 6
27:09and 6 30 p.m
27:10he leaves
27:11national flight
27:12services
27:13and tells us
27:14that he's going
27:14to hooters
27:15on south florida
27:16avenue
27:17in lakeland
27:17it's a frequent
27:18watering hole
27:19for him
27:21after that he said
27:22he was checked
27:23into a hotel
27:23he was meeting
27:24with a mistress
27:25and then agent
27:26kelly hits him
27:27with the evidence
27:29the photographs
27:31of toby
27:32on the polk
27:34parkway
27:35they were placed
27:37in front of him
27:37he looked at the photographs
27:39and readily admitted
27:40that's me
27:41that's my vehicle
27:42okay great
27:44so now i pull out
27:46the overlay maps
27:47that show the cellular
27:48routes
27:49of robert wiles's phone
27:50and toby holt's phone
27:53i push them towards
27:55toby holt
27:56and i ask him
27:57can you offer us
27:58an explanation
28:02toby says
28:03robert's phone
28:04must have been
28:04in somebody else's car
28:05the real kidnapper
28:07was trying to frame him
28:08and therefore
28:09was following him
28:11in his own car
28:12i had an immediate
28:13response for that
28:15i said toby
28:16we sent teams
28:17of people
28:18to interview
28:19every driver
28:20five minutes
28:22in front of you
28:23and five minutes
28:25behind you
28:26all of the individuals
28:28interviewed
28:29did not know
28:31tom wiles
28:31did not know
28:33robert wiles
28:34once he learns
28:36that information
28:37his face
28:39from the shoulder blades
28:40up to the top
28:42of his head
28:42turned
28:44flush red
28:47and toby
28:48shakes his head
28:49i don't have an
28:50explanation for you
28:51guys
28:51i'll tell you this
28:52i watch a lot of
28:54crime shows
28:54i know
28:56law enforcement
28:57can trace
28:57cellular records
28:59why would i do
29:00something like this
29:02they then asked
29:03toby if they can
29:04search his car
29:05yeah i've got
29:06nothing to hide
29:06sure
29:08our evidence
29:09our evidence
29:09our evidence
29:09response team
29:10went down
29:11and searched
29:12that vehicle
29:13under the hood
29:15of the bmw
29:16inside of a
29:17white plastic
29:18trash bag
29:19further contained
29:20inside a
29:21handgun case
29:22was a
29:2340 caliber
29:24six hour weapon
29:25and also
29:26a magazine
29:30kelly's first thought
29:31would be mine
29:32well for all the
29:33watching of cop
29:34shows
29:35you can't hide
29:36a gun worth
29:37of shit
29:37because now
29:38i've got the
29:39gun that you
29:40said you didn't
29:41have
29:42and then he says
29:44that sometimes he
29:45would put it there
29:46because he would
29:47travel in bad
29:48areas and he
29:50needed it for
29:51protection
29:52it was a
29:53far-fetched
29:54absurd answer
29:55are you going to
29:56be in a position
29:57to ask your
29:58muggers can you
29:59give me a few
29:59minutes so that i
30:00can lift up the
30:02hood of my
30:02vehicle unpack
30:04my six hour
30:0540 caliber
30:06it just didn't
30:07make any sense
30:09and mr holt is
30:10not just a liar
30:11but a bad liar
30:12he's hammering
30:13nails in his own
30:14coffin lid
30:16but we had
30:18no lawful
30:20right to seize
30:21that weapon
30:22at that time
30:23there's not a
30:24body we have
30:25no legal grounds
30:25to charge him
30:26so holt was able
30:28to leave the
30:28premises but we
30:29believed that
30:30toby holt was
30:31obviously involved
30:33in what ultimately
30:34happened to
30:35robert wiles
30:36everything about
30:37toby holt says
30:38he's a lying
30:39son of a bitch
30:40they now need
30:41to set about
30:41proving it
30:44there's a lot
30:44of legwork that
30:45goes into
30:46disproving his
30:47alibi of
30:49april 1st
30:492008
30:51we send
30:52agents to
30:52hooters
30:54hooters had
30:54video where
30:55you could see
30:56the entrance
30:56and exit
30:58doors and
30:59we watched
31:00video before
31:01and after the
31:02time frames
31:03and never
31:04saw toby
31:06go in or
31:07out
31:09they then
31:09go to the
31:10hotel where
31:10he says he
31:11booked a room
31:12for he and
31:12a mistress
31:13and there
31:14he is
31:14on the cameras
31:15checking in
31:16going upstairs
31:17to the room
31:17within two minutes
31:19he drops a bag
31:20in the room
31:20comes back out
31:21and he leaves
31:23he leaves the
31:25swan hotel
31:25around 915
31:26he doesn't come
31:28back till close
31:28to midnight
31:29that's an
31:30appreciable amount
31:31of time
31:31where he could be
31:32doing something
31:33else
31:34so where is he
31:35where did he go
31:39so we went
31:40back to the
31:41cellular telephone
31:42records
31:42there was so
31:43much more
31:44information in
31:45those cellular
31:45telephone records
31:46for instance
31:48there was a
31:48411 directory
31:49call at
31:50841pm
31:51on Tuesday
31:52April 1st
31:52the day of
31:53Robert's
31:54disappearance
31:54so one of
31:56the detectives
31:57responds to
31:58411 headquarters
31:59and says do you
32:00keep records
32:01of these calls
32:02oh yeah
32:03of course we do
32:04so they line up
32:05Holt's number
32:06and they said
32:07alright this call
32:08was forwarded
32:09to the Home Depot
32:10on South Florida
32:11Avenue in Lakeland
32:14why do you need
32:14a Home Depot
32:15at 850 at night
32:16when you're supposed
32:17to be in a hotel
32:18room that you're
32:19not in
32:22so we went
32:23to Home Depot
32:23and asked them
32:25for video
32:25and of course
32:26businesses will
32:27overwrite
32:27their surveillance
32:28so we asked
32:29them give me
32:29all the transactions
32:31that came through
32:31from 10 minutes
32:32to 9
32:33till you closed
32:34and there were
32:34two receipts
32:35both were
32:36cash purchases
32:37we see a purchase
32:38of four to five
32:39feet of husky
32:40black plastic
32:42vinyl sheeting
32:42in two rolls
32:43of duct tape
32:44the kind of
32:44supplies you would
32:45need if you
32:46want to dispose
32:47of a body
32:48we took all
32:49of that information
32:50and we came
32:51to the investigative
32:52conclusion
32:53that Toby Holt
32:55was the murderer
32:57in this matter
32:58there was no
32:59kidnapping
32:59there was two
33:00days of consideration
33:01how do I cover
33:02up a murder
33:05so now we have
33:07a shift
33:07a big shift
33:08in this investigation
33:09the problem
33:10was
33:11this is a
33:12nobody case
33:13we have
33:14no witnesses
33:16we have
33:17no weapon
33:17a knife
33:19a gun
33:19it is a very
33:21difficult case
33:22what the task force
33:24needs now
33:25is an aggressive
33:26prosecutor
33:27and they know
33:28just the guy
33:30I thought he was
33:30guilty as hell
33:31there was no
33:32question in my mind
33:33about that
33:34I'm like
33:34yeah
33:35that's what we
33:36want to hear
33:36you know
33:37let's roll
33:38so finally
33:39all the work
33:40has paid off
33:42but they have
33:43a problem
33:44they go to arrest
33:45him
33:45and he's not there
33:47we learned that
33:48he actually was in
33:49the country of
33:50Columbia
33:50at the time
33:52Toby was
33:53on a business trip
33:54working for a company
33:55out of the east coast
33:56of Florida
33:57the initial feeling
33:59was
33:59I hope he doesn't
34:00stay there
34:01you know
34:01it's going to be
34:02a heck of a time
34:03to try to get him
34:03extradited back
34:04to the United States
34:05Columbia is not known
34:07for their cooperation
34:08for extraditions
34:09this is potentially
34:11an enormous problem
34:16Holt is in Columbia
34:18on business
34:19and the task force
34:20is worried
34:21they may not be able
34:22to force him back
34:23to the Colombian government
34:24it's a thought
34:25that crosses your mind
34:26obviously
34:26but then we found out
34:29that he was on
34:30the flight back
34:30to Orlando
34:38when he arrives
34:39at the airport
34:40there's a group
34:41of people
34:41waiting there
34:42to see him
34:43they're not
34:44happy relatives
34:45there are other people
34:46that have badges
34:47and guns
34:49Toby Holt
34:50didn't have
34:51the typical reaction
34:52I mean
34:52it wasn't like
34:53are you guys crazy
34:55it was kind of like
34:56they got me
34:56let me think
34:58about what I can say
34:59to get out of this
35:04a Florida man
35:05sits behind bars
35:06tonight
35:06accused of killing
35:07and kidnapping
35:08Toledo native
35:09Robert Wiles
35:11he was charged
35:12with first degree murder
35:13kidnapping
35:14and extortion
35:17after he was arrested
35:18it's gut wrenching
35:19I mean
35:20it just rips your heart out
35:21but by then
35:23we all
35:24kind of assumed
35:25that that's
35:26what happened
35:27and so now
35:28we want to know
35:29what happened
35:33these detectives
35:34have turned up
35:35a number of circumstances
35:36that are quite
35:37suspicious
35:39but we need to find out
35:40what Toby Holt's
35:41motivation could be
35:42we currently
35:43don't have one
35:44but they're still looking
35:46we learned
35:47there was some
35:48animosity
35:49towards Robert
35:50because Toby Holt
35:51believed that he was
35:52essentially
35:52quote
35:54giving away revenue
35:55well
35:55that created tension
35:57because Toby Holt
35:58at the time
35:59was the general manager
36:01an substantial amount
36:02of his salary
36:03was based on
36:04the profit
36:05of the Lakeland facility
36:07Toby Holt felt
36:09that Robert
36:10was undercutting him
36:11and that was causing
36:12National Fly Service
36:14to lose money
36:15and by them losing money
36:16Toby's losing
36:18his bonus money
36:19as well
36:19based on his
36:21financial records
36:23that the FBI
36:24went through
36:25we've learned
36:27Toby lived
36:28way above his means
36:29Mr. Holt
36:31lives a questionable
36:32lifestyle
36:33he has at least
36:34a dozen
36:35girlfriends
36:36he had a number
36:37of confidants
36:38at National Flight
36:39that would cover
36:40for him
36:40in relation
36:41to his wife
36:42he was dating
36:44any and everybody
36:45he could meet
36:46you know
36:47playing the role
36:48you know
36:49going to the restaurants
36:50constantly
36:50and so I think
36:53it all caught up
36:54to him
36:56given the absence
36:57of a crime scene
36:58there is no way
37:00to know
37:00how this all
37:01transpired
37:02but some reasonable
37:03conclusions can be made
37:05through speculation
37:08I believe that there
37:09was some very bad blood
37:10between the two
37:11and it becomes
37:12this slow simmering
37:13pot on a stove
37:15and eventually
37:15it boils over
37:16and something awful
37:18comes of it
37:20there very well
37:21could have been
37:21a situation
37:22where they had it out
37:24where Robert says
37:26I am going to tell
37:27your wife
37:27about all these
37:29mistresses
37:29I'm going to expose
37:31you for that
37:31you're also going
37:33to be fired
37:34that leads
37:35to a physical
37:36altercation
37:40and perhaps
37:41Toby becomes
37:42overwhelmed
37:42with rage
37:45reaches in
37:46his desk drawer
37:47pulls out
37:47his 40 cal
37:51and uses it
37:55boom diddy
37:56boom diddy
37:57boom
37:57so long Robert
38:01and at that point
38:02we know that there
38:03is black plastic
38:04sheeting and two rolls
38:05of duct tape
38:06on April the 1st
38:07that has been purchased
38:08from Home Depot
38:13you would assume
38:14then that the body
38:15is wrapped in that
38:16and disposed of
38:20so now we get
38:21into the speculation
38:22where did he dispose
38:24of the body
38:26we don't know
38:27it was never found
38:31every retention pond
38:33in this state
38:34there's alligators
38:37could that have
38:38been done
38:38yeah
38:41alligators
38:41are always hungry
38:43and things disappear
38:44bones and all
38:45gone
38:46disposal
38:47in Florida
38:48is as simple
38:49as it gets
38:51Toby then comes up
38:52with a kidnapping plan
38:53the $750,000
38:56ransom demand
38:57so connecting
38:58the dots
38:59it's perfectly
39:00understandable
39:01why the money
39:01wasn't picked up
39:02he knew it was a trap
39:08ultimately
39:09the case matter
39:11went to trial
39:12in 2012
39:13approximately
39:14a three-week trial
39:17it came down
39:18to obviously
39:19where a jury
39:19had to make a decision
39:20the verdict
39:22was guilty
39:23of manslaughter
39:24and guilty
39:26of extortion
39:27and he's not guilty
39:29of kidnapping
39:29because there was
39:31no kidnapping
39:31it was manslaughter
39:33because I had
39:33too many
39:34unanswered questions
39:35but he did something
39:38he did something
39:39and he needs
39:40to be accountable
39:41for that something
39:42that he did
39:43the judge gave him
39:4515 years for the
39:46manslaughter
39:46and 15 years
39:47for the extortion
39:48consecutive
39:49there is obviously
39:51some elation
39:52with that conviction
39:53however
39:54on the flip side
39:56you have
39:57the victims
39:58in this
40:00and you have to
40:01feel for them
40:02they have to
40:03put their head
40:03on a pillow
40:04every single night
40:04and know that
40:07their son
40:07isn't coming back
40:11I don't think
40:12there's ever going
40:12to be any type
40:13of peace
40:13that you find
40:15you just learn
40:16to live
40:17live your life
40:18and move along
40:19each day
40:20but you know
40:21the people
40:22who knew Robert
40:23love Robert
40:25they're not going
40:26to forget about Robert
40:27right across from me
40:28is my father
40:29Tom Wiles
40:30he was a good man
40:32I was very proud
40:33of him
40:38I miss him
40:39every day
40:40of my life
40:44I just can't believe
40:46it happened
40:51the torture
40:52it's done
40:53to the family
40:56they have no
40:57body to bury
40:58they have no
40:59degree of closure
41:00whatsoever
41:02justice
41:03is neither cruel
41:04nor kind
41:05it is merely
41:06indifferent
41:10on the next
41:11American detective
41:13I've been talking
41:14to this woman
41:14online
41:15his life was
41:16falling apart
41:17but she was
41:18putting it back
41:19together
41:21did they know
41:22where the money
41:22was going
41:22unfortunately
41:23three innocent
41:24people had to
41:26pay the price
41:27who did this
41:28to your family
41:29I don't know
