00:14I'm on my way to pick up actor-comedian Tiffany Haddish, and she's known for her light-hearted
00:21sense of fun that she brings to every role.
00:31Let's see how she bears in the world!
00:50I'm coming!
00:53I'm coming!
00:54I'm coming!
00:58OK, when it comes to habitats, this is not my natural habitat, OK?
01:02My natural habitat is big cities, cars.
01:06That's my natural habitat.
01:07But you know, I think my soul's habitat, this is it.
01:13But usually more trees.
01:15I'm not gonna lie to you.
01:16I thought I was going to the woods.
01:20Oh, well.
01:21Here's something you need to know about Tiffany Haddish.
01:24She pushes buttons.
01:29Tiffany Haddish is a Grammy and Emmy award-winning actress, comedian, and producer.
01:34She's made history as the first black female stand-up comedian to host SNL.
01:41I grew up in foster care, and I want to say thank you to anyone who paid taxes between
01:451990 and 1999.
01:47Because if you wouldn't have paid your taxes, I wouldn't have been standing here today.
01:51So thank you.
01:52And Tiffany's unfiltered and vulnerable storytelling extends beyond stand-up.
01:58She became a New York Times best-selling author for her memoir about life growing up in foster care.
02:05A lot of revelations in this book.
02:07I'm comfortable sharing it because I feel like I can't be the only person in the world that's gone through
02:11these things.
02:11Her ability to share her hardship with humor and charisma sets her apart.
02:16I don't know if it's difficult for all women of color, but from my experience, it's hard.
02:21It's that positive energy and resilience that makes Tiffany shine that's gonna be key for her out here in the
02:28wild.
02:29We out of here. Come on, girl.
02:34Below me is the mighty Colorado River, 1,500 miles long, and it's tall, these huge canyons, incredible arches, and
02:44massive cliffs.
02:48Tiffany, get ready for running wild.
02:54Bear gave me this backpack. Let's see what's inside of me.
02:57We got a tarp, a gag ball, and a rope.
03:04Ooh, what kind of freaky is he? Let's go!
03:17I got you, come on!
03:20There's no bear on a damn helicopter hanging off the side of me.
03:23Like he Indiana Jones, Temple of Doom. Like, he coming to rescue Saturday.
03:28Let's bring your ass on over here.
03:46Just about to go. He's just about to go. He's off. He's off.
03:50Hey!
03:51Come on, come for me. You okay?
03:53Yeah!
03:53Ready?
03:56You're welcome and running wild, Tiffany!
03:58Yeah!
03:59Let's go!
04:07Okay, so we're going up into the mountains over there.
04:11Woo!
04:14Tiffany and I will be making our way through a harsh desert terrain.
04:18We'll need to move quickly across sandstone fins and valleys.
04:22We'll have to climb our way up a sheer cliff using a tight slot canyon,
04:27then make our way across a mesa down into a deep valley towards camp.
04:31Our final push will mean Tiffany using everything she's learned to climb up a towering sandstone mountain
04:38and onward to a remote cliffside exfil.
04:42But before our journey through this desert labyrinth,
04:46we first need to find a way out of this heli amongst this rocky terrain.
04:50Let's hope Tiffany is a quick study.
04:53Whatever happens, that hand never comes off.
04:55Okay?
04:56Watch me.
04:57I'm going to do the same.
04:59I'm leaning back, wide stance.
05:02I'm touching the head.
05:03I go under.
05:10Look at that.
05:11It's perfect.
05:19This white boy's sick in the head.
05:21He think I'm finna come up out this helicopter on the road.
05:26And then I thought to myself,
05:27come up out the helicopter on the road or without the road?
05:31Gonna take the road.
05:46She's a badass.
05:56Good job, brother.
05:58Awesome.
05:58Good for you.
06:05Good job, you.
06:07Yeah.
06:07Easy peasy.
06:08What's next?
06:09I love it.
06:09She was super calm in that helicopter.
06:11It's not easy rappelling out.
06:13There's a lot going on.
06:14That was nothing.
06:15She was like zen calm, really focused, and did it like a boss.
06:20Feeling good already?
06:21Yeah, feeling very good.
06:22Let's do it.
06:23He's helping me take it off, y'all.
06:26Come on.
06:27I've already got them where I want them.
06:30I think I could definitely push her a little bit today.
06:32We've got a bunch of all of these canyons to get up and down and across.
06:36Our extraction's about five or six miles that way.
06:39Instead of calling it extraction, can we call it birth?
06:42Yes.
06:43Maybe extraction conjures up loads of bad images.
06:45It just makes me think of pimples and like, you know.
06:48Dentists.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Go through the journey.
06:52Six miles that way.
06:53Yeah, that's what it felt like when I was being born.
06:55Six miles.
06:55It was only six inches, but it felt like six miles.
06:58The longest six inches of your life.
07:00Let's go.
07:05So what made you get into this lifestyle?
07:07You got in trouble in school and got put out the house.
07:10That is weird, Lee.
07:11How do you know that?
07:13Yeah, good guess.
07:14You look like the type that would get in trouble in school.
07:16That's a good guess.
07:17I can tell.
07:18Well, you know what?
07:19I'm not good at very many things, but the few things I love are wrapped up in all of
07:23this right here.
07:24Good people, the outdoors.
07:26Lucky the good Lord gave me a job, Tiffany.
07:28Yeah.
07:28That's how I look at it.
07:29This ain't a job.
07:31This is an experience.
07:32Yeah, that's true.
07:35You get a chance to like, get into the outdoors?
07:37Often.
07:38I try to make sure I get outside daily.
07:40Oh, that's good.
07:41Yeah.
07:42And I'm a farmer.
07:43Really?
07:43Yeah.
07:44Like what sort of things?
07:45Like cucumbers, collard greens, bell peppers, onions.
07:50Got a lemon tree, got a plum tree.
07:51I love plums.
07:52They're my favorite.
07:53Same.
07:53Yeah, I love plums.
07:54Yeah, I'm just curious about all things created by God.
07:58Yeah, that's a great way of looking at life.
08:00But you were athletic as well growing up, weren't you?
08:02Yes, I was.
08:03I was all city and track and field and high jump and shot put.
08:08Yeah.
08:08Used to do the hurdles and triple jump.
08:10Did I read that you were like the mascot when you were at school?
08:13Oh, yeah.
08:14I was the high school mascot.
08:15What does that mean?
08:15I was a conquistador.
08:17I was a, yeah, I was a Spanish soldier that ran around the school during football games
08:23and got everybody excited about the games.
08:26And I turned it into a little bit of a career, if you would say.
08:29Yeah, but that's like amazing.
08:30At a young age, you were obviously a light.
08:34Yeah.
08:35Find the funny, bring the joy by any means necessary.
08:38If some people get offended, that's because they got some stuff going on inside their heart
08:42they need to get over.
08:43But, you know, I'm coming from a place of goodness and trying to bring joy.
08:47Well, the world needs that.
08:48Good for you.
08:49Yeah.
08:49Yeah.
08:50Let's keep that spirit today.
08:51All right, let's keep it.
08:54So we're going to head up over the top of this.
08:57You want to go up there?
08:59Well, no guarantees, but a chance we can make it through.
09:02But that looks like a scene out of a bad movie where a man had to chew his arm off
09:06in order to live.
09:08A lot of the time when you're trying to get out of places, you know, jungles, deserts, mountains,
09:12you always want to head downhill.
09:13For this journey, though, our end point is actually up quite a bit.
09:17And we're at a bit of elevation and altitude already, so this will be a physical journey.
09:22You know I put hiking on here.
09:23We might need to change that from hike to climb.
09:26Come on.
09:27We'll go this way.
09:28White people.
09:31Good job.
09:32Look at you.
09:32You've got strength and balance.
09:35I could have climbed up.
09:35I could have climbed up.
09:38It's quite, it's quite tight.
09:42That's what he said.
09:44One thing I noticed, she loves to laugh.
09:47If you can laugh at yourself, at situations, that conquers everything.
09:55Wow, look at this.
09:57This is really opening up.
09:59I mean, it's still tight.
10:01Canyonland is harsh.
10:02You can see the power of wind and rain carved through some of the slot canyons.
10:06Look here.
10:06You got another one out there.
10:09That's too skinny.
10:10That's model size.
10:13If that's the top there, that's going to save us hours.
10:18There's also snake terrain.
10:20Be mindful where you're putting hands in crevices and cracks and holes.
10:25Okay, so look, this is as far as we can go.
10:29This will definitely be physical.
10:31It's hard work.
10:33We got to do it like in the karate movies.
10:35But also, Tiffany's pretty fearless with all this.
10:38Yeah.
10:39Yeah, we'll bridge it.
10:40Exactly.
10:42With these sheer cliffs, handholds are hard to find.
10:46So to make our way up, Tiffany and I will need to see if we can chimney climb to the
10:51top.
10:51I'll trail this rope.
10:53Uh-huh.
10:54And then I'll secure it at the top.
10:56It's actually quite technical to do when you've got to brace yourself against the wall and get your knees up
11:00high
11:01and use, like, opposing forces against the wall to crank your way up this thing.
11:05But it's awkward.
11:08I'm going to push your back against the wall.
11:12And I just keep climbing your way up.
11:14But it's your pressure against the wall that is your security.
11:19You got it.
11:23You can do it.
11:25You can do it.
11:25I'm so proud of you.
11:26Keep up the good work.
11:29Woo-hoo!
11:31You made it!
11:33It looked like you made it.
11:35Okay, so that's good.
11:36So let me secure this.
11:38And then we'll bring you up.
11:40This is kind of like what we used to break into buildings that was abandoned back in the
11:451900s.
11:47The most nimble boy would climb up.
11:50He'd bust me in the face with the rope.
11:59Okay, that's it.
11:59Brace yourself back against the wall.
12:01That's it.
12:01Beautiful.
12:02You're, like, bridging your way up.
12:03Inch by inch.
12:05She's got really nice balance and strength.
12:07Takes a little bit of sensing that rhythm and stuff.
12:10But she's going to smash it.
12:12Great job.
12:13Great job.
12:14Use your hands.
12:14That's it.
12:15Like, opposing forces.
12:16Beautiful.
12:27I'm one of them people that, like, if I see you do it, I think I can do it, too.
12:33Good job.
12:34Just rest.
12:34Don't take a break.
12:35Yeah.
12:37Now, I might not actually be capable, but I will believe in me enough that I will get
12:44it done.
12:45Who are you telling?
12:47I would try and get your right foot, like, high.
12:52Oh, man.
12:52She's not really.
12:53I don't know.
12:54If I die in this canyon, I'll be the most famous person to die here.
13:00Give me a second.
13:03Give me a moment.
13:19Don't take a break.
13:21I don't know, baby.
13:22She's not me.
13:22I don't know.
13:24Take your time to recover.
13:31I think I'll go there.
13:32Left foot there.
13:34And then right foot.
13:35Because, yeah, that works as well.
13:36And then I've got you here, okay?
13:39I've got the butt up here.
13:40Great, great.
13:41That's a tricky move.
13:42You did it beautifully.
13:43The outdoors has a way of getting into the most, like, awkward, difficult positions,
13:48you know?
13:49Okay, you're going.
13:50One, two.
13:51I've got you as well.
13:54Okay.
13:58It's coming out.
13:59It's coming out.
14:00It's coming out.
14:01What's coming out?
14:02What's coming out?
14:03The lining of my uterus.
14:05I'm blowing up.
14:06I'm gonna be honest with you.
14:08Probably picked the wrong time of the month to do this show.
14:12You know, but I'm doing it.
14:15I'm prepared for every eventuality in life, apart from, in a slop canyon, being able to
14:20handle a prolapse uterus with the one that sneaked through my resume.
14:25Sometimes your body be trying to out-do your brain, but then you have to out-mind your brain
14:32and your body, and you have to tell all of them, I don't give a damn what you doing.
14:38We going up here.
14:40This way we gotta go.
14:44I moved the way God intended.
14:48I'm on top of the world!
14:50On top of the world!
14:52You're the first man to bring me to the top of a mountain.
14:55Morale in the wild is always the first thing to go.
14:58When people get tired and headaches and it's hot.
15:01That's all good for you.
15:02I'm going through puberty right now.
15:03You're what I call unstoppable.
15:06Hold up.
15:06I'm a human.
15:07I can be stopped.
15:08But, uh, she really loves to laugh.
15:11And that is such a powerful weapon in a survivor's arsenal.
15:15It really is.
15:16Once we're over that, then that'll be canyon one done.
15:20How many canyons you planning on us doing today?
15:23It's good.
15:24We're getting there.
15:31Look at the lizard!
15:33Lizard!
15:37Tell you what, should we just make use of this little bit of shade, five minutes?
15:40Yeah.
15:40Drink your water and then we'll get moving.
15:45Where does your, uh, wonderful, warm personality come from?
15:50Um, it comes from, uh, survival.
15:52Yeah.
15:53And, uh, I guess I try not to be bored at all costs.
15:58Mm.
15:58No matter what I'm doing, I want to have fun.
16:00Mm.
16:00So I feel like the best way to have fun is to have a positive attitude.
16:04Yeah.
16:04You find survival skills in life, don't you?
16:07Whatever works.
16:07Yeah, like, I assume some gonna happen out here, but if I have fun in the process, it'll
16:13be okay.
16:14Yeah.
16:14Yeah.
16:15Like, so create a positive environment as much as possible, even though this is, uh,
16:20kind of uncomfortable.
16:22Mm.
16:22People are, like, nervous of the unknown, and it's like, you're not scared to embrace
16:26that.
16:26Nah.
16:28It's every day feels like I'm out of my comfort zone, so.
16:31Mm.
16:31I used to be, like, really scared of everything.
16:33Mm.
16:33But I figured fear is false information appearing real, and so, uh, when you're afraid, get as
16:41much information about the thing that you're afraid of, and then push through it.
16:46Like, go.
16:47But did you have that positive spirit at that age, or have you learned that, do you think?
16:51No, I had that spirit at that, at 14, 15, I had that spirit.
16:55I mean, by then I had already been in several foster homes, and, uh, what it felt like, I'm
17:00just like, boom, I'm in a stranger's house again.
17:02Mm.
17:02Like, I'm living with people I don't know.
17:04Might as well make the best of this.
17:06Like, also, you wanna have that, like, kind of fun personality?
17:09Mm-hmm.
17:09Because I didn't wanna get put out.
17:11Mm-hmm.
17:11So I thought if I was funny, and cleaned up, and everything, that they would want me around,
17:15but then I would still get moved.
17:17Mm-hmm.
17:17Right?
17:17Um, and at that time, I didn't comprehend that that had a lot to do with the courts,
17:21and not to do with the, the foster parents.
17:24I just, if, for me, I just thought, oh, they don't want me.
17:26Don't nobody want me.
17:27Mm-hmm.
17:29I did all these nice things, and they still don't want me.
17:32Like, I cleaned the kitchen.
17:33I cleaned the toilets.
17:34I made the beds.
17:35I did, like, I helped.
17:37I cut the grass.
17:38Like, I did all these things, and they still don't want me.
17:42And it's not that, it's not that they don't want you.
17:45Mm-hmm.
17:46It's the courts, like, okay, you've, at this age, you gotta go here now, or you have to
17:49go there.
17:49But they, they don't explain that to you.
17:51Mm-hmm.
17:51Nobody's explaining those things to you, so you, you left to assume.
17:56As soon as I start thinking back about that past, I don't, I don't know how I did it.
18:01Mm-hmm.
18:02But I did.
18:03Just like I could not tell you exactly how we climbed up that cave.
18:07I couldn't tell you exactly how it happened.
18:09Mm-hmm.
18:10All I could tell you was that it happened.
18:11Yeah.
18:12And that we did it.
18:13Yeah?
18:14I'm so sorry you've had all of that.
18:16Yeah, I'm sure you had some .
18:17But it's like, you know what?
18:19You, the fact, the fact that you want to be out here like this, I know some things that
18:22happened to you.
18:22It's true.
18:23I know you've been through some stuff.
18:24It's true.
18:25And I like you a lot, too.
18:26It's okay.
18:26So I know you've been through it.
18:28But it's also, it's okay.
18:29Yeah.
18:29It's like, that's life.
18:31It's, I always remember my grandpa, he said, he said, I never met a strong person who's
18:37had an easy past.
18:38And it's like, if you want to be strong, you're going to deal with some stuff and it's
18:41not always going to be fun.
18:43Right.
18:43You know, you've never been moved around from house to house, but I'm sure you've been
18:46through some .
18:46Mm-hmm.
18:47I could tell.
18:48I could see your soul.
18:49Mm-hmm.
18:50I want to give you a big hug, but you must be, and so am I.
18:53We smell like humans out here.
18:57Right.
18:57Come on.
18:58We'll keep moving.
18:59All right.
19:00Tiffany opened up about very difficult times in her life when she was younger.
19:04And I don't know.
19:05I really admire, first of all, that honesty and that vulnerability, but also how she's
19:10learned in life to cope with these things.
19:13And yeah, a true never give up as she is.
19:26So we're getting some distance now under the foot, which is good.
19:31But the sun is dipping, we need to keep that energy, keep that intensity.
19:35This is going to be an adventure.
19:38You doing all right?
19:39Yeah, I'm considering this a spiritual journey.
19:42Yeah.
19:42Yeah.
19:42You know, today's Yom Kippur.
19:45We ain't supposed to repent for your sins.
19:53I feel like Bear and I got a closer connection now because I shared some dark stuff.
19:59I let him know I've been through some things.
20:00This is how you tell men you crazy without telling them you crazy.
20:03Share a little bit of your tragedy so he understand.
20:06Okay, if she didn't give up off of that, she's probably not going to give up.
20:21I can do it, Dad.
20:23You're smashing it.
20:24I can do it, Dad.
20:26You are doing it.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Tiffany and I are continuing onward through a series of sandstone mesas and valleys.
20:33After a tough climb up, we now have to find our way down to the next valley before pushing
20:40forward towards our extraction point.
20:44Almost at the top here.
20:45This is going to be good.
20:47This will be worth it.
20:48I feel like burning up the calories is already worth it.
20:52Now look at that fruit.
20:54That is amazing.
20:56We need to drop off this high ground, though.
20:59We're going to use the last bit of this rope.
21:01But look, there is nowhere to tie up here.
21:04We've got no trees, no big rocks.
21:06We're going to use this anchor of yours.
21:10All right.
21:10Perfect.
21:11So that's a sea anchor from the boat.
21:12That whole time I was on the boat trying to figure out what this was, you know?
21:17And it is a sea anchor.
21:19They just throw it.
21:20It acts like a parachute in the water.
21:21Keeps the boat steady.
21:23Yes.
21:23Also, you can use it as a hat.
21:26Sunshade.
21:26Actually smart.
21:28Yes.
21:29Oh, it's a sandstorm.
21:32I thought it was a device to protect your face from the sun.
21:36I can still see what's going on.
21:38Do you think there's a small chance that the sun has got you, Tiffany, at this stage of the journey?
21:43No, that's my imagination, bro.
21:47But it's not good that way, because the predators, you can't see the predators.
21:51Maybe a cougar or two.
21:53Okay.
21:54Careful.
21:54There's cougars out here.
21:56That's true.
21:57I know.
21:58We're going to fill this with rocks?
22:00Yeah.
22:01Keep me focused.
22:02You keep focused.
22:03I got to keep your eyes on the rocks.
22:04Don't mess like we're focused on the rocks.
22:07Either way, I thought it was for protection.
22:11See?
22:12But yeah.
22:12Today, it'll be used to protect us from dropping to our death.
22:19This the kind of rock we need, because you weigh probably about 180-something.
22:24I'm looking at your frame.
22:26Yeah, go on.
22:26Put that on top.
22:26That's great.
22:28Great job.
22:30Tiffany's got that sea anchor that I asked her to grab from the boat at the start of the journey.
22:35We're going to use that.
22:36We're just going to fill it full of rocks, jam it behind a little ledge.
22:39Good.
22:40Put all your weight on it.
22:41Well, let me give it to you.
22:43Hopefully, there's enough weight there.
22:44And if all the pulling direction is kind of laterally, it won't pop out.
22:50I think we got it.
22:52And that will be our anchor point.
22:56Tiffany and I are rappelling 120 feet down, but the descent is steep and the footing precarious.
23:05Tiffany will need to stay focused, as this is much harder and more dangerous than it looks.
23:14Okay, so Tiffany, nice wide stance, yeah?
23:18Yeah.
23:19The handle, when you put the weight on it, you pull the handle and it will release.
23:23But let go of the handle and you're locked off.
23:25Locked.
23:25Okay?
23:27There's a man pulling on my cord.
23:30Tiffany's pretty fearless with all this.
23:32But also, this is tricky terrain.
23:35So it's kind of in at the deep end.
23:39So keep this hand still down here and just gently release this and walk your way back.
23:45Yeah.
23:46I could be in the Marines.
23:47You've definitely got the Marine spirit.
23:50Go on, get down there now.
23:51Hoorah!
23:52Hoorah!
24:05This is a tricky bit.
24:21Okay, Tiffany, you're good.
24:23I have rappelled several times in life.
24:27I've rappelled off a side of a building.
24:30I've rappelled men.
24:31So I've rappelled.
24:33Properly trained on it?
24:34Never.
24:35Never been properly trained.
24:37Now we gonna see what happens.
24:48All day I've been climbing, climbing, climbing straight to the top all day.
24:53Now we're going down.
24:55I don't wanna go down.
25:12No!
25:17Oh, my God.
25:20Keep holding that brake, Jan!
25:24That's it.
25:25Keep your hand on that rig.
25:30Great job.
25:33I got it.
25:35Nice.
25:37Well controlled.
25:40Great job, Tiffany.
25:43I felt fear.
25:45Not in me.
25:47Bear was scared for me.
25:48He was scared.
25:48I could tell I felt his fear.
25:50That's it.
25:51Well done.
25:52Great effort.
25:53Well recovered.
25:54Going up that edge is all good.
26:02Well done.
26:03You all right?
26:03Yeah.
26:05I really wanted to do some flips.
26:07Well, you did.
26:08But you sounded concerned.
26:09Well, I was a little concerned when you went upside down.
26:11I was planning on doing flips.
26:13And then you were like, are you okay?
26:15And I was like, okay, let me just...
26:17Well, I care.
26:17I want you to be all right.
26:18It's like...
26:19I was going to flip around and stuff, have some fun.
26:22No.
26:23I'm not going to lie.
26:23My heart definitely missed a beat.
26:25I can't decide whether she was like messing with me,
26:29which she does a lot.
26:31Or whether she really turned upside down accidentally.
26:34Either way, a few more gray hairs today.
26:38Bear, what you doing?
26:40Come on!
26:43Okay, don't burn through that energy.
26:45We're going this way.
26:54The sun is fierce.
26:57So I'm always just mindful.
26:58Just trying to make use of a bit of shade along the way.
27:00Don't try and beat the sun in the desert.
27:03We're going to have to bat smart.
27:05Look at how pretty that ridge is over there.
27:08Oh, yeah.
27:10You could, like, dwell under there.
27:11You would have had Native Americans doing that for thousands of years.
27:14Yeah.
27:16Woo-hoo!
27:17Woo-hoo!
27:18Woo-hoo!
27:19Woo-hoo!
27:26Wow, look.
27:26Okay.
27:30Remains of a tarantula, look.
27:32Yeah, that's a dead tarantula in that bit of water.
27:44I'm going to say she's not so bad.
27:46Have you ever eaten a tarantula?
27:50I'm sure I have.
27:53You know, they say when you sleep, you be eating spiders in your sleep.
27:56Ha-ha-ha-ha.
28:01No.
28:02That is a tarantula.
28:03That is a tarantula, look.
28:04That is a real tarantula.
28:06Ha-ha-ha.
28:09There you go, your first tarantula.
28:10Good job.
28:11I think I've eaten this before.
28:13Ha-ha-ha-ha.
28:17Okay, I'm following you.
28:22Tuck in behind me.
28:23We're going to get into the shade here.
28:24Just have a little sit down.
28:27Here, why don't you sit here?
28:28I'll make a little hole for you.
28:33Where did you first figure that you can actually use your comedy and do it maybe as a living?
28:41I got my first gig, like real gig, when I was 21 and I bombed, absolutely horrible.
28:50But they still pay me my $50.
28:52Yeah.
28:53For 15 minutes.
28:54Did that knock your confidence though?
28:55At first, I was like, oh, maybe I shouldn't do this for a living.
28:59And then they still handed me my money.
29:00I said, uh, I'm going to do this for a living.
29:03I just got to make sure I do better at it.
29:05Yeah.
29:05Um, and then I just started getting on stage like every night and writing every day.
29:10By the time I was 21, I knew I could make a living.
29:14And then you got an Emmy for SNL.
29:16That must have been a moment.
29:18Oh my goodness.
29:19Let me tell you something.
29:20Being on SNL, dream come true.
29:24To be the first African American female standup comedian to host SNL after all those years
29:31of it being on the air, honored and privileged.
29:34And my Emmy is in my bed.
29:38You earned it.
29:39Right next to my Grammy.
29:41And when I get a man, I'll take the trophies out the bed.
29:45You've earned them.
29:51What would you say the, the job that kind of changed your life was?
29:57I don't know.
29:58I feel like my life is changing every day.
30:01Yeah.
30:01I don't think it's the jobs that changed my life.
30:04I think it's the mentality that changed my life.
30:07Like people would say, oh, Girl's Trip is the movie that made her famous.
30:10And that, that put her on the map.
30:12And that's the thing that, you know, it's Girl's Trip.
30:15I wouldn't say that.
30:17I would say when I got to be on the Arsenio Hall show.
30:20Come on here, Tiffany.
30:22Like I always believed in myself, but that's when I like, I knew that the little girl in
30:28me, little T, it's going to see all her dreams come true.
30:33Like everything I had been praying to God for.
30:37Everything that I, every, every, everything I just knew.
30:40Little T always dreamed of that.
30:42Like I dreamed of that when I was freaking nine years old.
30:46Like taking care of my sisters and brothers.
30:49Being homeless a couple of times.
30:51Then wondering like, am I even going to make it past 18?
30:53Am I even going to live?
30:55Cause I was seeing people die and stuff all the time.
30:57So like to get to there, I knew in that moment walking on there and then when Arsenio Hall
31:03picked me up and I licked his face and he tastes like Ovaltine.
31:08I was like, I could die right now.
31:10I would be okay with that.
31:13It was, but God has a mission for me.
31:15I have a, I have things I have to accomplish here on this planet.
31:18So I'm going to be here for a long time.
31:19And I got so, so many more dreams and so many more things for little T to accomplish
31:25and for grown up Tiffany to accomplish.
31:27Tiffany, she's learned in life to cope with these things and difficult things and choose
31:34positivity and choose humor and choose to keep going.
31:39You know, despite like some overwhelming obstacles for her at a young age that no human should
31:45ever have to go through.
31:46And I know I really admire her.
31:59Soak it in.
32:01I would have been living out here.
32:03But on this particular day, I would have stayed under the cave.
32:06Well, you know what they say.
32:07Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.
32:13It's hot, dusty.
32:15Everything's fighting against you, but we're going to push on.
32:17Keep moving.
32:18Get out of here.
32:20Okay, so that is where we got to get to.
32:24This is like a rock climb.
32:25Yeah, this is a climb.
32:28We've arrived at the base of a 200-foot cliff.
32:32But it's more intense than at first glance.
32:35The cliff face is sheer sandstone and extends another 300 feet down below.
32:42So we need to be methodical getting up and do not look down.
32:48I know it's like pretty exposed here on this edge, but once we're over the top of that, then we
32:53can follow the rim of that canyon all the way.
32:56All right.
32:59So we've reached the base of this climb.
33:01We want to push on and get to the top of this.
33:03It is pretty steep.
33:04I've pre-placed a couple of ropes down this, and we're going to use these climbing tools called dewmars.
33:10This is a dewmars.
33:11Mm-hmm.
33:11This slides up it, but it won't come down.
33:14Yeah.
33:14But we can also lean on this.
33:16Rest.
33:17Yeah.
33:18And then we go again.
33:19But it's pretty committing, because once we're on this, if you look to the right-hand side there, it just
33:24goes straight off here.
33:26Five, 600 feet sheer down.
33:28So I'm going to go first.
33:29Okay.
33:29I'm going to get to the top of our shout down.
33:32He go up first, because it's ladies first.
33:35Keep looking up, just like she does in life, and keep aiming up and keep moving up.
33:41Don't be scared.
33:42You got it, Bear.
33:43You know how to climb.
33:49Look at that.
33:49It's a walk in the park.
33:55She's going to get a workout with this.
33:59Come on, man.
34:00You got this.
34:04Okay, so about a third of the way.
34:09Stephanie.
34:09Stephanie.
34:12Quite a long way down there.
34:14Why are you going so slow, Bear?
34:17She's like just talking nonstop.
34:19I can tell that's her way.
34:20Dealing with the nerves.
34:22Whatever it takes, it's good.
34:31Go ahead.
34:32You got this.
34:35You're going to take the difficult part.
34:48Okay, Tiffany.
34:50Clip in.
34:50And then I got you.
34:55I never have final words.
34:58I'm going to be on this planet a long time.
35:02Let's go.
35:04Back in the 1900s, we had this thing called physical education.
35:09PE.
35:12We used to have to climb a rope straight up until it touched the ceiling and then come down.
35:16I always got an A.
35:17I got the skill for survival.
35:19That's it.
35:20Looking good.
35:22I don't need no pulley to get up there.
35:26I can do it on my own.
35:30That's it.
35:31Great.
35:33Ugh.
35:41You okay?
35:44Just cramping.
35:45Can we come down to you?
35:47No, no.
35:47This is normally during this time of month.
35:51I'm laying down.
35:55I definitely picked the wrong time of the month to do this .
35:58I wouldn't be out here in this desert today, I tell you that much.
36:03I think she's just in a lot of pain.
36:05You know what?
36:06It's what the outdoors does.
36:08The wild, it humbles all of us in some ways.
36:11She's just got to keep moving now.
36:13It's her time to dig in a bit.
36:18Keep going, Tiffany.
36:20Keep going.
36:24I'm physically having pain.
36:27I know what that pain is, and I know I can move through it, but then emotionally,
36:32I'm having a full argument with myself.
36:35My body is like, no, I don't want to.
36:37Dig in.
36:38You got it.
36:38And my mind is like, no, we're moving.
36:45We gonna go up this mountain.
36:50I'm coming!
37:02I'm coming!
37:17I did not want to be over here.
37:19I want to stay in the crack.
37:21Yeah, don't look down to your right.
37:24I already looked.
37:27Push that jumar up high and lean on that.
37:29Okay.
37:30You got it.
37:33Oh, my back.
37:35You okay?
37:38Just cramping.
37:39Do you want me to come down to you?
37:41No, no, this is...
37:42Sure?
37:43It's girl.
37:43I got it.
37:45Give me a second.
37:47Now it's just pain management and emotional management.
37:51Hold up.
37:52I'm coming all the way.
37:53That's what pain is about, though, right?
37:55You'll learn so much.
37:57Just move through that fear, though.
37:59Don't sit in it.
38:00Move through it.
38:01Don't worry about that, Hatties.
38:02Don't worry about that.
38:06Sorry, I had to cut myself out a little bit.
38:08No, it's good.
38:08I know you're digging deep.
38:16Great job, Tiffany.
38:23Great.
38:24Big step.
38:25Here we go.
38:26Great effort.
38:28Great effort.
38:29You can walk it up.
38:30Just walk it up.
38:31That's it.
38:32Well done, yeah.
38:43I have endometriosis.
38:45Endometriosis is inflammation of the uterus.
38:48It's very painful.
38:51And, um...
38:52Yeah, the climbing up the rock part, that's easy.
38:55It's what's going on on the inside.
38:57That's hard.
38:58Take my arm.
38:59Let's keep going.
39:00The emotion that is bubbling up, just me processing my pain.
39:04Like, hey, we're stronger than this.
39:07And this, this been happening every month since we was 13.
39:11You can't do this.
39:12You should be proud of yourself.
39:14I am.
39:14I did it.
39:16I did it.
39:20It's what I love about the wild.
39:21It just shows the real person eventually, and it's real life.
39:26And the outdoors does it.
39:27Oh, it's humbling.
39:29It does it to us all.
39:29Tiffany has been a trooper throughout this journey.
39:34Tiffany has been a trooper throughout this journey.
39:34It's truly inspiring to see someone push through and overcome so much.
39:39Her strength and heart is incredible to witness.
39:46If you could go back and speak to that young Tiffany, what would you go back and say to her?
39:51I would say everything you've got to go through is so that you can do really amazing things.
39:59All those dreams that you had, you can do them all.
40:02But you're going to have to go through some hard stuff.
40:05And you will cry a lot.
40:07Just push through no matter what.
40:09I think that's what I've seen in you all this journey.
40:12You know, it's not not feeling fear.
40:14It's like finding a way through it.
40:16And as you said, keep moving forward.
40:18Keep moving forward.
40:19Be a never give up.
40:20Never give up.
40:21Which you are.
40:21Yeah, I never give up.
40:22I am relentless.
40:24And has that been key, do you think, in your career as well?
40:27The key has been the relationships that I've developed and how I've been able to identify good people.
40:33Anything is possible.
40:34Trust the right people.
40:35Like I believe in you, and so if you're doing it, then I know I can do it.
40:40If you're willing to take the chance, then I know I can take the chance.
40:43Yeah.
40:43I believe in you.
40:44And different people for different seasons, you know?
40:47Exactly.
40:48Everybody can't do every job.
40:49Yeah, yeah.
40:50I need 15 hugs a day.
40:52Yeah.
40:52I am 13 hugs short.
41:00Let's fire the smoke.
41:03There you go.
41:09There you go.
41:09Tiffany is such a live wire and a ball of positivity, but she's also someone who hasn't had an easy
41:16past.
41:16And I think if you can learn to turn difficult things into beautiful things and hard experiences into positive attitudes,
41:25there's nothing that you can't do.
41:27And Tiffany is testament to that.
41:29There's smoke.
41:31Yeah, that looks good.
41:32She is still full of dreams and ambitions, you know, heart in her sleeve, tears in her eyes, and it's
41:38no surprise she is taking the world by storm.
41:42Tiffany, you are a remarkable lady.
41:49Tiffany, you are a lot of joy.
41:50Oh, thank you.
41:51Thanks for that.
41:53You are a great lady.
41:59I am proud of you.
42:14What a superstar.
42:14and all that, I think I could do it.
42:19She ready.
42:20And that's how I feel.
42:22I feel like the epitome of my slogan, she ready.
42:26I surprise myself every day in every way, time and time again.
42:35Bear, I'm so proud of you.
42:37And I'm so glad God made you.
42:40I mean, without you, I wouldn't be out here in this desert today,
42:43I'll tell you that much.
42:45God, up!
42:47You're a great teacher, awesome guy, kind of cute too,
42:51but you're married, so you ugly.
42:53That's just the way it goes for me.
42:55As soon as I know you're married, you become ugly.
42:59No shade, just love.
