Historic Wildfire in Georgia Consumes 32,000 Acres — 187 Homes at Risk, Emergency Declaration Issued

The Pineland Road Fire in southern Georgia has ravaged over 32,000 acres and is only 10 percent contained, with state authorities labeling it the most extensive wildfire on privately owned land in Georgia's history. This blaze has resulted in the destruction of 35 structures, poses a threat to 187 homes, and has led to the evacuation of 140 residents. Governor Kemp has announced a state of emergency across 91 counties and has sent Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopters into action. Severe drought conditions—humidity levels in the low 20s and a Keetch-Byram Drought Index nearing 700—are hindering containment efforts, while upwards of 20 large fires are raging simultaneously across Georgia and Florida.
