La Organización Mundial de la Salud indicó recientemente que "la mayoría de mujeres en áreas afectadas por el zika darán a luz niños normales" y que los exámenes de ultrasonido no pronostican de manera fiable los casos de microcefalia, salvo en casos extremos. No obstante, la organización considera que las mujeres que quieran interrumpir su embarazo por miedo a la microcefalia deben "tener acceso a servicios de aborto seguro de acuerdo a la ley". El debate sigue abierto.
