When Inter won their famous treble in 2009/10, Bodø/Glimt finished 6th in the Norwegian second division. Last night, Glimt dumped Inter out of the Champions League 5-2 on aggregate. This comes after a run of 4 straight wins in Europe, including beating Man City and Atletico Madrid as well as Inter. Archie Corbett looks at how they've managed this immense feat and looks at how much further they could go in the competition.

00:00Right, hello everybody, welcome to the Adam Cleary football channel, where Bodo Glimped have just beaten Inter Milan, and we
00:07love them.
00:09And the thing is, when I say we, I mean me and Archie, who you may have seen on the
00:14members' live streams,
00:15we decided that it was finally time to do a video on Bodo, but the thing is, Archie is actually
00:22a Norwegian football expert.
00:25And that's, it's not a euphemism for something weird, like he genuinely goes to Norway to watch games of football,
00:31and he does the social media for Osana, who are a team in Norway, so he is way more knowledgeable
00:37about this than I am.
00:39So what we decided to do, is rather than he makes the video and I present it and pretend I
00:44knew all this, like some other channels would,
00:46we're just going to let him talk to you about Bodo instead.
00:50Now I know that's a little bit different, right, but I'm telling you in advance, because this is not easy
00:55to do,
00:56and I would like you all, please, to be nice to him, okay?
01:00YouTube needs more people that both understand and care about the things they're talking about, and he both does and
01:06does.
01:07So we're going to run the title card, then I'm going to disappear, and Archie's going to tell you why
01:10Bodo are so good, okay?
01:13Please enjoy, and be nice. Bye.
01:16Right, hello everyone, and welcome back to ACFC, the Adam Cleary football channel.
01:21And yep, 10 points to Gryffindor, good spot, I am not Adam Cleary, but more on that in a minute,
01:26because Bodo Glimt have just dumped Inter Milan out of the Champions League.
01:31And they've just been on a run of beating Man City at home, grabbing a 2-1 win at Atletico
01:35Madrid
01:36to just about squeeze into those playoff places, and have just beaten Inter Milan over two legs to go through
01:41to the next round.
01:41And, do you know what? They could win the lot.
01:48Now, while Bodo Glimt are fantastic and amazing, and I'm going to tell you why in just a second,
01:54they're only the second best thing to come out of Norway.
01:56Number one is Fotmob, and if you don't have the app already, I don't know what you're doing with yourselves.
02:00They've just added heat maps, which is such a touch.
02:03They've got match reports, they've got live updates during the game.
02:06I've got it on my phone. They're brilliant.
02:08You can download the app through a link in our bio, so be sure to do that.
02:12So, as I mentioned, yes, I am not Adam.
02:15ACFC is becoming the Archie Corbett football channel for one day only.
02:19But yeah, Adam asked me to do this video because I've got a little bit of a background in Norwegian
02:23football,
02:23which I'll explain at the end if anybody's particularly asked.
02:26And yeah, let's get into why they're knocking out your favourite European side from the Champions League,
02:31because it's incredibly interesting.
02:32But I think a little bit of context is needed before we get into that.
02:35So yes, Bodo Glimt from a small fishing town in Norway called Buda,
02:38in the Arctic Circle, which has about 50,000 inhabitants.
02:41They play their home games at the Asmira Stadium, which holds around 8,000 people.
02:46And they play all their home games on AstroTurf, which is the thing you might know them best for.
02:50So this here is their starting line-up for the majority of their Champions League games.
02:55And you can pretty much predict who's going to start for them week in, week out.
02:58They absolutely try and run teams off the park.
03:01I mean, look at these numbers from FOTMOB.
03:03They lead all Champions League teams in total distance covered per match.
03:06And if you just look at the actual amount of kilometres here, it's not particularly close either.
03:11They have the same individual running numbers, with the top three all being Bodo Glimt players.
03:15And sure, that second stat is a little bit skewed because they've played more than any of the teams that
03:20aren't in the playoff round.
03:21But that playoff round still accounts for 16 of the 36 Champions League teams.
03:25So in my eyes, that's pretty impressive.
03:27So this two-legged tie against Inter is the perfect example of their absolute versatility.
03:31And let's start with the first leg because they put three goals past Inter Milan who have conceded the second
03:38least amount of goals in the Champions League so far.
03:40So what the f***?
03:42They played this game at an incredibly high tempo and forced Inter into all sorts of mistakes.
03:47Like this is a clip of them just pressing the absolute life out of Inter.
03:50Going entirely man for man all over the pitch and forcing what was an incredibly dumb pass straight into their
03:56midfielder, Sondra Fett.
03:57They break into the box quickly and effectively and it's a brilliant finish from their star man Jens Petterhauger.
04:02Lovely stuff.
04:03Again, this time they win a header.
04:05Instantly look to get out on the break.
04:07But they don't really have the numbers to threaten Inter here, right?
04:10Sure, some Inter players are lagging behind the play.
04:12But it's not an area I'd be too worried about if I were the manager.
04:14But it's an inch perfect choice and more importantly weight of pass that makes a difference here.
04:20Once again, being really quick and effective in their break and they create a really solid chance out of it.
04:26And this last clip I want to show you from the Inter game in the first leg is an absolute
04:29masterpiece.
04:30If you haven't seen the goal yet, you're in for a treat.
04:32It's played around the back and then bam!
04:34One player takes three touches, the rest one and two touch only.
04:37It's the kind of goal that Guardiola's Barcelona would be proud of.
04:40Capped off with a deft little flick from Caspar Herr into Fett who finishes brilliantly.
04:44A little side note on Caspar Herr, by the way.
04:47Because he was this close to joining Norwich for £7 million in January.
04:51And he's since gone on to score twice against Manchester City.
04:55Once away at Atletico Madrid and then once against Inter Milan as well.
04:59So I'm sure he's gutted he's not playing for Norwich who were 18th in the championship and lost 2-1
05:05to Birmingham at the weekend.
05:07Weird world, isn't it?
05:08Crazy little sliding doors moment that for him.
05:10Anyway, like I say, the first and second legs show the two very distinct styles that Buda Glimpt can play
05:15with.
05:16Incredibly technical and fast-paced in the home leg, putting Inter to the sword and putting themselves in a brilliant
05:20position going to San Siro.
05:22Now, remember when I said that that first leg, Pep Guardiola would have been proud of the goal that Buda
05:26Glimpt scored?
05:27And I stand by that.
05:28Well, this second leg is the kind of thing that Sean Dyche would have stood up and applauded.
05:32Bearing in mind they're sitting on a wonderful but always slightly precarious two-goal lead going into this game.
05:37They sat in this incredibly narrow 4-4-2 block.
05:41Again, it's nothing fancy, but it didn't need to be.
05:43It was suffocating and immensely narrow.
05:45And it allowed space down these channels here for crosses.
05:48Banking on their numerical advantage in the middle to win the ball and clear it.
05:51And by God, did they?
05:53This here is all the crosses from both teams in that game.
05:56I've added Buda's up here just to show you the stark comparison of styles in this game.
06:02Because every single Inter attack was coming down this left and right hand side, largely from both wingbacks.
06:08And Buda were able to create a vacuum in the middle that just allowed absolutely no space for Inter to
06:13play.
06:14And if I just quickly overlay this crossing map with this map here.
06:18Now, this is all of the blocks and clearances from Buda Glimpt players in this game.
06:21And once again, it just perfectly illustrates that they were able to sit in this 4-4-2 block,
06:26allow crosses in, invite Inter on, win the header, and just get out of there.
06:31Now, they frustrated the absolute life out of Inter Milan.
06:34But they got into halftime at 0-0.
06:36And the second half really opened up for them attacking-wise.
06:38And they were able to show much of their good play from that first leg.
06:41Because they had less than nothing in that first half attacking-wise.
06:44I mean, like I say, look at this crossing map.
06:47Just, just, just, there's one there and it's unsuccessful.
06:50And it goes to nobody.
06:51But something as innocuous as an opposition throw-in right down by their touchline
06:55allowed them to apply their press perfectly.
06:58Now, I'm not sure how hard of Kanji really was hitting the head prior to this.
07:01You can see the bandage around his head.
07:02But obviously the pass he plays is completely batshit and Buda Glimpt scored.
07:07But once again, Buda were able to force them into this position.
07:11And it looks like very little on the face of it.
07:13But it's what they do best.
07:15And after the goal, they had a few really good sequences on the ball.
07:18They're really able to show their on-ball quality.
07:20And this second goal, again, is an absolute thing of beauty.
07:23Like, the vision to see this pass between the lines.
07:26The run, the touch, the volleying at the bottom left-hand corner to make it 2-0.
07:31It's class, isn't it?
07:32And just look at the comparison in stats in that second half versus that first.
07:37It's really interesting because they're actually having less possession.
07:39But they're doing more with it.
07:41Having more shots.
07:42And they've got a higher XG as well.
07:44And it's this idea of not just having possession for possession's sake that really sets Buda Glimpt apart.
07:49Now, you'll have to bear with me here because this stat is insanely convoluted.
07:52But there's actually some really interesting information hidden amongst the kind of weird wording.
07:56Now, this is rankings for teams who have the most under 10-metre passes going past over four opposition players
08:05per 90.
08:06Now, that obviously sounds like the most random criteria for a stack you might have ever heard.
08:10But what it really means in human terms is they're insanely progressive.
08:14But they do it in really short passes.
08:16And once again, this just backs up the idea of them not being wasteful in possession.
08:20And again, look at their pass map from that second half.
08:23And you see all these forward arrows, all from these bunched together players in these kind of zones here where
08:29they love to have the ball.
08:30And once again, you get an idea of how truly efficient they are on the ball.
08:34There's so many forward passes, lots of long raking passes as well.
08:38They don't mess around with a thing, especially the ones I've highlighted here from this defensive zone.
08:42There's very few that go backwards or sideways.
08:45Once again, they're all long balls forward or straight into the midfield so they can play it around in there.
08:49And this is where they're able to revert back to how they play in their league.
08:53Now, they're a very dominant team in their league.
08:55They've won four out of the last six Elite Serum titles.
08:58And they play with a very heavy possession style football.
09:01Now, this obviously has to change when they get to the Champions League.
09:03And again, another problem for them.
09:05Because naturally, another challenge with being so dominant on the ball in your league,
09:09because of the differing standards,
09:11means that you have to completely change the way you play for large parts of these Champions League games.
09:15Now, just look at the comparison here of their league stats versus in Europe.
09:19Their average possession drops dramatically from 63% down to 46% per game.
09:24Their accurate passes per match drops by about a third as well.
09:28And interestingly, on the other side,
09:30clearances per match, well, they go from dead last in the league to ranking second amongst all Champions League teams.
09:36So they have to completely change the way they play from their league to the Champions League.
09:41And I know that's fairly common for smaller teams,
09:43but it just presents them with another challenge for the Champions League
09:46and makes this run so much more impressive.
09:49I'm going to keep saying it.
09:50So I've shown you both sides of how well Buda Glimpse are able to play in different scenarios.
09:54And I'm sure you get the idea now of just how good they can be both defensively and attacking wise.
09:59Fundamentally, they're incredibly high energy, very well drilled, technically elite,
10:04and they have the ability to completely frustrate an opponent as well,
10:07which is just an added bonus.
10:08And just so we're clear, Buda Glimpse's last competitive game in the league was in November 30th.
10:14Yep, last year.
10:15As you may or may not know, the Norwegian Professional Football League runs from March through to November.
10:21So in the meantime, and I'm not even kidding when I tell you this,
10:25they've been in Marbella.
10:27Now, I'm sure they've not been playing 18 holes of golf and drinking a crisp Madrid exception at the end
10:32of it.
10:32I mean, who knows?
10:33They might have been, and if they have been, that makes this 10 times more impressive.
10:37No, they've been training there and playing friendlies in the meantime,
10:40but all these friendlies are against teams that are also in their offseason,
10:44so the intensity is nowhere near the same as the Champions League.
10:47And like I say, I think that just makes this a million times more impressive.
10:51And look, sure, they have their weaknesses.
10:54They've not kept a clean sheet in the Champions League yet.
10:56They give up tons of chances and take huge risks on the ball.
11:00Take this from the game against Atletico Madrid.
11:02Sure, they ended up winning it, but at this point, it's nil-nil.
11:04The ball is worked back to the goalkeeper,
11:07and nobody closes these absolutely monstrous gaps between the lines.
11:11One stray pass later, and they're incredibly lucky not to concede from here.
11:16So honestly, can they win the Champions League?
11:18I mean, probably not.
11:20I'd be amazed if they did.
11:23But can they knock out your favourite team on their way to the round after this
11:27and cause them absolute nightmares?
11:29Yeah, of course they can.
11:31I mean, look at the wins they've got so far.
11:32And what makes them so cohesive as well is their focus on homegrown talent.
11:35Not only is nine of their starting 11 Norwegian, but tons of them have been there for absolutely years.
11:41And loads have come from their academy as well.
11:43And just to strip it back from the tactics for one second.
11:46They recruit excellently, they're incredibly innovative, and they all have such a buy-in mentality.
11:52Just as a little aside, Norway has turned 60% of all of its pitches into AstroTurf,
11:56because obviously they get really harsh winters.
11:58So if they all played on grass, they'd play like four games a season or something mad like that.
12:02And technically brilliant teams such as Buda Glimt are just the absolute perfect by-product of this.
12:07A month ago, apparently they had a 0.3% chance of getting through to the next phase of a
12:12Champions League.
12:13But they went on this mad run of wins.
12:15They did it.
12:16And can they make a deep run of the competition?
12:18I mean, you tell me.
12:20I think they're excellent.
12:21I think they've got Sporting or Man City in the next round.
12:24And whichever one of those two they play, they're going to cause problems.
12:27They've already beaten City once.
12:28I think over two legs City probably have their number.
12:31But Sporting, I mean, why not?
12:35But yeah, like I say, he asked me to do this video because I watch an obscene amount of Norwegian
12:39football
12:39and don't really have a life.
12:41So yeah, I hope you enjoyed it.
12:42Normal service will resume.
12:44Adam will be back in this incredibly sweaty studio.
12:47I am dying here.
12:48It's the hottest day of the year.
12:49Good call doing it today, Archie.
12:52You can get me across all the socials that I'll make magically appear where my hands are.
12:56And until the next time, remember to subscribe as well.
12:59That's what people say.
13:00And watch our videos because I like them.
13:04I edit them and spend an obscene amount of time watching Adam talk like this.
13:09I really should be better at it because I watch him do this a lot.
13:13But I also don't know how to do outros.
13:15So I guess that's something.
13:16Have a lovely rest of your week.
13:19Goodbye.
13:19Goodbye.
13:21Goodbye.
