Transcript
00:06in sudan gold is more than a natural resource it's a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of people
00:13from workers digging in isolated mining zones to traders operating within complex supply chains
00:21the sector supports livelihoods across the country yet much of this activity takes place informally
00:29small-scale miners account for a significant share of production relying on rudimentary equipment
00:35and working in a dangerous environment for many gold mining remains one of the few available
00:42sources of income in a struggling economy gold has transformed our lives and the lives of many others
00:51but the work is dangerous and expensive we need better pricing from the government when it buys
00:57our gold so more people are encouraged to sell through official channels the largely unregulated
01:04nature of the sector brings major challenges safety risks are widespread environmental concerns
01:11continue to grow and significant revenues are lost once extracted gold often passes through layers of
01:20intermediaries before leaving the country frequently through unofficial routes this makes it difficult
01:26to monitor production or enforce pricing standards and there is limited transparency and weak oversight
01:35in 2025 sudan produced around 70 tons of gold but officially exported only about 20 tons this gap
01:43represents a major loss for the state especially at a time of economic strain with global demand for
01:49gold rising sudan is increasingly tied to international markets stronger regulation and the creation of
01:55structured markets could help reduce smuggling and boost national revenues some estimates indicate that up to
02:01half of sudan's gold may be smuggled suggesting actual production figures could be far higher than recorded
02:08authorities have introduced measures to formalize the trade but implementation has been uneven and many miners and
02:16traders remain outside the system as conflict and economic pressures persist sudan is facing the challenge of trying to
02:25regulate gold sector so it doesn't continue to operate beyond the state control sudan's gold sector stands at a critical
02:34moment it holds the promise of economic relief and job creation but also highlights deep governor's challenges
