00:00The narcotraficants are returning to the territory where the coca is cultivated in Colombia.
00:04Remember that at the end of 2022,
00:05we started talking about a crisis cocalera that had hungry for thousands of farmers?
00:10Well, in several regions, the cultivators were waiting for the government of Gustavo Petro
00:14to come with alternatives to substitute the cultivos and to move forward to legal economies,
00:18but that didn't happen.
00:20What came, at least since four months, was the money from the narcos
00:23through the buyers of coca-based pasta, the key to the production of coca.
00:28That's why, after two years of crisis cocalera, the market began to give signs of reactivation.
00:32In fact, the recent report of the United Nations showed that in 2023,
00:36they increased a 10% of the cultivated hectares, to reach 253.000.
00:41But let's go for parts.
00:42When the prices of the coca bajed abruptly,
00:44the experts, politicians and social leaders began to talk about the opportunity of gold
00:49that the crisis had for that the state, finally, impulse a strategy that would allow
00:53to end the economic dependency of the illicit cultivos.
00:56The conditions seemed to be delayed because Petro has recognized that the
01:00campesinos cocaleros are the most débil in the chain of the narcotráfico.
01:03Around the 60% of them live in poverty.
01:07Although they were announced, they passed almost two years, and in practice,
01:10these promises still don't appear.
01:12And, ojo, it's not that people cultivate coca for gusto
01:15or because they have a criminal vocation, as they usually do.
01:18These siembrations are located in separate regions,
01:21without vías, public services or conditions of life dignas, garantizadas.
01:24And it's not the same transport 100 bultos of yuca or plátano
01:27than 2 kilograms of coca-based pasta that have in a backpack and no have to pay
01:31a flet that can carry almost all the money.
01:33The other key issue is that it was not a crisis of the entire economy of the
01:37narcotráfico, but that the estragos were felt exclusively the cultivators and recolectors.
01:42The big narcos continued with the business of the cocaína,
01:45which was not replaced by fentanyl, as some of them said,
01:47and that is kept growing with more than 23 million consumers in the world.
