00:00There is a good deal of press assembling outside this home as people try to figure out exactly what and
00:09how this all happened.
00:11NCNN's Brian Stelter spoke with anchor Jim Sciutto about President Trump's message right after the attack.
00:20We should know because prior to this whole event, there was concern about the president coming to this event for
00:26the first time and attacking the media.
00:31Now, events take a different turn, a violent turn, and the president had a different kind of message.
00:35A very different message, a message actually of unity and a message that I think brought the temperature down.
00:42It was a message that tried to cool things as opposed to intensify or heat things up.
00:48And that's important to note because this president, given 10 years of rhetoric against the media in the past year,
00:54his administration taking many actions to investigate and sue and take action against the media,
00:58he very well could have immediately turned around and tried to blame the press.
01:03He could have immediately tried to claim that the press was out to get him.
01:06Now, in this case, with the suspect, we don't know what he was thinking.
01:10We don't know if this event was just a crazy magnet, and that's what happened with this magnet.
01:14We don't know if he was there trying to shoot at journalists or trying to shoot at the president.
01:18That's key.
01:19We do not know his target, as the police said.
01:21That will be part of the investigation.
01:23The answer is, plural, because he brought multiple knives and multiple guns.
01:26So we don't know.
01:27But you imagine a world where the American president could have very easily tried to make a bad situation even
01:32worse,
01:33and he did not choose to do that at all.
01:35In fact, he invited the press corps to run back to the White House for a press conference.
01:39And so I think that was a very American gesture, a very American statement.
01:43And it reminds me, Jim, we're talking to viewers all around the world right now,
01:47for all of the attacks against the press in America, for all of Trump's nastiness toward the media,
01:52the U.S. is still the envy of many other countries.
01:55The press here is still remarkably free.
01:57We are so protected by the First Amendment.
02:00And, you know, so it makes me think about American exceptionalism,
02:03but then it also makes me think about American exceptionalism in one other way,
02:06and that is the degree of gun violence in this country that is so unlike others, right?
02:11What you and I went through tonight, which was very mild compared to what so many other Americans have experienced,
02:16hundreds of thousands, millions at this point, being put under lockdowns,
02:20being told there's an active shooter, being told there's a threat in their school or in their mall or in
02:25their town.
02:26This is, unfortunately, very normal in America.
02:29For us, it's unusual tonight,
02:31but what's one of the strange things about America is how normal this is now.
02:36I was talking to some European diplomats who were in the room as well,
02:40and they were conveying that to me.
02:41Were they? Yeah.
02:42About how, and one of them was saying, you know,
02:45how at the RNC convention, there was a shooting outside that,
02:50this diplomat had witnessed as well.
02:53So, listen, as an American, you and I witnessed this,
02:57and I'm sure people watching here, sadly, have witnessed or experienced shootings like this before.
03:03Right, right.
03:03Like a lot of them, you begin with a moment of disbelief.
03:08Yes.
03:08Right?
03:08Because invariably, how many shootings have you and I covered where when you speak to eyewitnesses,
03:13they will say when they heard the first shots,
03:14I thought it was firecrackers or a backfiring car?
03:18Because your mind doesn't want to believe that it's gunshot.
03:20I had the same reaction.
03:21I was like, pop, pop, pop.
03:23You know, was that wine glasses falling off a tray, right?
03:25That's what I thought.
03:26You know, what was it?
03:26You know, but, of course, it was gunfire.
03:28When I was under the tables, I was over with some NBC folks trying to talk to sources,
03:33and I was talking to people there where all of a sudden we're under the table.
03:36And what was worrisome to me was there were multiple waves of security officers coming into the room.
03:40After the initial.
03:42After the initial moment, after the president was brought out,
03:45you had more officers coming in, climbing over chairs, climbing over tables.
03:49In some cases, they were there to help the folks that had hurt their foot, hurt their leg, but fallen
03:54over.
03:54But also, they were there.
03:56We didn't know what they were there doing.
03:57You know, we didn't know what they were there for in those moments.
03:58So it became more stressful for people as the, it must have been about two minutes.
04:03I'm not sure how long it was when people were hiding under tables.
04:06But I'll never forget what that was like to see people, including, by the way, there were some kids.
04:10You know, some journalists, some politicos had brought their children.
04:13You know, there were scholarship winners for this event.
04:15You know, what we should have been talking about tonight were the award winners from CNN
04:19and the Wall Street Journal and their outlets for their work cover in the White House.
04:22And then hopefully a great performance by a mentalist.
04:26And instead, to me, it's a reminder that we have this incredibly valuable First Amendment,
04:30and it's been upheld tonight.
04:32But then we have this Second Amendment that creates a space for so many threats like tonight's.
04:38We are joined now to delve deeper into some of those security questions
04:42by CNN Senior National Security Analyst Julia Kimes,
04:44served a long time in the Department of Homeland Security.
04:46Julia, good to have you.
04:49Thanks for having me.
04:50You know, often in the wake of events like this, you know, we'll ask that question.
04:55Can you ever do an event like this in a place like this again?
05:00And I find that sometimes in my experience, you know, those questions get asked a bit to her.
05:04I mean, I said this a short time ago, after the Butler Hill assassination attempt,
05:08there was a question, can Trump have big public rallies again, right?
05:12And he has.
05:13I mean, a challenge certainly for Secret Service.
05:16Is it clear to you that there was something wrong with the way security was done here
05:22that has to be changed dramatically going forward for events like this?
05:27Or, you know, is this something that you can add some security
05:32or that the security worked as best as it could under these circumstances, et cetera?
05:37So I looked at this in sort of three different ways.
05:41The first is that there is always risk in society, in particular if you're a president.
05:47And the president acknowledged that in his statement.
05:50So, you know, you're going to have higher risk incidents.
05:53The second piece is we who do this kind of work never really talk about safe.
05:58We just talk about risk reduction.
06:00Can you make things safer?
06:02And that's where my questions go to right now is just sort of, you know,
06:06what was the safety and security apparatus the same as it had been in the past?
06:14Did it differ?
06:15Because you're starting to hear anecdotes of people thinking that it was a little bit more open
06:19than it had in years before.
06:20The third piece is, given the risk and given that you can't make things perfectly safe,
06:27does in the future, do you want to consider or do they want to consider sort of larger perimeters
06:32for events like this?
06:34That would include controlling who stays there or having an understanding of who stays there.
06:39If that seems to be the gap right now, if he had access to the hotel,
06:44was walking around essentially freely, at least around the security perimeter,
06:49that's something you'd want to tighten up.
06:51So look, I never say something's good or bad or people did good or bad just a few hours after
06:57the incident.
06:58But those are the questions that any legitimate and thorough review of what happened should consider.
07:05Wakey, wakey.
07:07What's going on?
07:09Not much.
07:10Having a cup of tea and curious about these.
07:14Jason Siegel and Samara Weaving are plotting partners in Over Your Dead Body.
07:18You're going to knock me unconscious?
07:21Tie me to the bag of rocks you hit the boat?
07:24Sink me to the bottom of the lake?
07:26Because all you do is criticize me!
07:28In your stupid accent, it's like British cross with the devil!
07:32Well, your plan sucks!
07:34Your plan is to just shoot me?
07:37I was being nice about it.
07:39You would have been unconscious.
07:40Oh, okay.
07:41Because I am considerate!
07:43Oh my god!
07:44Please stop it!
07:45Then a home invasion complicates things further.
07:48Siegel says he was drawn to the film's metaphor.
07:51Going through a really tough time in a marriage or marriage counseling where you start out as enemies and wanting
07:56to kill each other.
07:57And then there's a big explosion.
07:59Then you realize, oh, the only way we're going to get out of here is together and having to work
08:03together against a common enemy.
08:04Oh my god, there's so much blood!
08:06Heaven has another angel!
08:07Don't walk into the light!
08:08Come down from heaven and savor!
08:10The scenes were just making me laugh when I read them, but also felt very real and honest.
08:18And then getting to work alongside Jason and just being able to play in that space was really, really fun
08:27and rewarding for me.
08:28In a relationship, the key is finding ways to keep things fresh.
08:34In Hollywood, I'm David Daniel.
08:56I don't ever slow up.
08:58No, I don't take shit.
08:59I got no love for the faith is if you want to play tough and want to hate this, I'll
09:04always show up and make a statement.
09:07I don't ever slow up.
09:08No, I don't take shit.
09:09I got no love for the faith is if you want to play tough and want to hate this, I'll
09:15always show up and make a statement.
09:27Everything I do is so instinctive.
09:28All right.
09:55Joining me now, CNN's Chief White House Correspondent, Caitlin Collins, who, like myself, was in the room as this happened.
10:01And Caitlin, this is now, if I have it correctly, the third shooting event in and around, of course, we
10:09had Butler, Pennsylvania, another attempted shooter down in Florida.
10:14And this, you speak to the president frequently. How has he responded to this?
10:22I mean, Jim, he was actually surprisingly calm when he came out here to the briefing room tonight and was
10:27giving us those updates.
10:28I mean, he was the one who confirmed the suspect had been apprehended after there had been some confusion about
10:33whether or not the suspect had been shot and killed, if he was arrested, what had happened.
10:37The president confirmed that earlier and then came out of the briefing flanked by his top two officials, the deputy
10:41attorney general, who's the acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, and the FBI director, Cash Patel, to provide that update.
10:47As they say, warrants are going out. They are searching the suspect's apartment, that they are fully engaged in, obviously,
10:53all the aspects of this investigation.
10:56And as the president himself was talking about it, what it was like, Jim, to be inside that room, because
11:00I had eyes on the president as we were watching.
11:03I mean, it was a remarkable moment. There was no programming going on, as you know.
11:06We were seated at our tables, and then, obviously, Secret Service and law enforcement rushed into the room in a
11:12way that I have never seen in my life, coming down the main aisle.
11:16And in that time, though, the president was still on stage for another 20 seconds, probably, because I looked over.
11:22He and the first lady were speaking to Oz, the mentalist, who was supposed to be the entertainment during tonight's
11:27show.
11:28And then, obviously, they were rushed off stage. We saw the vice president rush off.
11:31It took a little bit, though, before other cabinet secretaries were removed from the room.
11:35I could see the Treasury Secretary, Scott Besson. I could see the Health Secretary, RFK Jr., before he was taken
11:40out by security.
11:41The Education Secretary was literally seated right next to me during the dinner and was captured on the floor with
11:47us as we were essentially waiting to see, was the threat clear?
11:51And so, when we were here in the briefing room tonight, obviously, as you noted, Jim, the president is no
11:55stranger to this, given he himself has been the target of two assassination attempts.
12:01And I asked the president whether or not his team that was here tonight had heard of any potential warnings
12:06or concerns of threats before the dinner took place.
12:12Were you aware of any threats? Was your team aware of any threats beforehand? And do you believe you were
12:17the target of this tonight?
12:19I guess. I mean, these people, they're crazy. They're crazy. And, you know, you never know.
12:24He was very far away from me. He had to go through a lot.
12:27You know, we had resources all over. We had resources sitting at tables, literally, in disguise, sitting maybe at your
12:36table. Who knows?
12:36But we had people all over the room, so he had a long way to go. That was really a
12:41first line of defense, and they got him.
12:44And they really, you know, they acted incredibly.
12:46No, we have no, we've had no, there was no notification. We had no idea.
12:52The president saying there, there was no notification ahead of time in terms of threats to him.
12:57Obviously, he is someone who has an intense amount of security around him wherever he is.
